FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Win or Lose, Just stay Calm! As a kid, when I used to play cricket, I was constantly under performance pressure. I should be the best and beat the rest - This was mantra, always. At the end of every match, I was only left with disappointment. Because I couldn't benchmark even my own expectations. The same pattern continued in my education until when I realized that I need to embrace the winner in me. It is not about being the best amongst others, but it is about being the best version of myself. Doing better than the last time. That is what winning means. So, when I started benchmarking with my previous performances in cricket, I was able to embrace the winner in me. A winner who does not compare himself with others. I applied the same principle to my career and cracked CA entrance, started my own firm, completed MBA and LLM while running my own business, and opened offices in 12 countries.

Are you embracing the winner in yourself? Feel positive about self and benchmark with only you. That will boost your confidence and hence the performance. As we embrace this contest season, you may win or not, but you have definitely improved from your last speech, last contest official role you have taken and the confidence rose. This is your victory. As we go through this edition of Communicate 98, you will find stories of members who embraced the winner in themselves. All the best

CREATIVES MANAGER

Abilash Gnanasekaran Teradata Pune Toastmasters Club, Backpackers Toastmasters Club

After being part of the Communicate 98’s Newsletter design team, there knocks another opportunity which is to be part of the DPRM Extended Team. As one of my favourite actors Will Smith quotes “The first step is you have to say that you can” and I applied for the Creative managers position. Creativity is something I try to inculcate in any given assignment and I got appointed as one of the Creatives manager is like cherry on top of cake. This is definitely one of the cherishable moments and milestones in my Toastmasters Journey. With patience, we learn more and grow more. I felt the truth in this statement when I completed each design assignment. Lots of flyers getting created week after week and getting published feels like a tiny win that needs a small celebration. Yes, celebrating such small achievements helps us to move forward in the chosen pathway towards bigger wins.

DISTRICT DIRECTOR'S ADDRESS

DISTRICT 98

Celebrate the Winner in You! Isn’t it true that society always praises and applauds winners? And isn’t is true that we, as individuals, are always trying to win, pitting ourselves against others, admonishing ourselves if we lose? We just don’t realize or credit ourselves for being winners in so many ways, some that are not even measurable. Often ‘winning’ is looked at as that which impresses others. So if you win a race or a contest, top your class, get that much awaited promotion and salary hike, you have won! Really? Why does this happen? Is it because the concept of winning, of being first, of being at the top, is so deeply engrained in our minds? Possibly! But we need to change that mindset. We need to create our OWN winning mindset, one that does not necessarily mean coming first or being the best. There are thousands of reasons to admire the winner in us. We just need to be aware of this, recognise it, embrace it and celebrate it.

We are winners everyday When we try and do our best When we help someone and no one else is willing to When we motivate and inspire someone When we attend club meetings and contribute When we speak up for justice, truth, fairness and equality When we spread laughter and happiness…… And the list goes on….. it’s endless The winner never thinks about what life demands from him because he is always busy giving to life more than expected. So be proud of yourself. Admire and credit yourself for the things you do. Celebrate the winner in you!

COVER STORY

Gaveliers Thunderous applause echoes in the room as 13 year old, Leader in the making, Neil Madan, stands at the podium and strikes the gavel to begin the meeting, as the Presiding Officer of The Gavel Club of Amanora.

The famous Chichewa proverb; “M’mera mpoyamba” literally translated as “catch them while young”, is the motto behind Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program ( YLP) and Gavel Clubs.

While the former offers an eight week experience, Gavel Clubs offer a recurring Toastmasters-like experience to students under the age of 18 and also to groups otherwise ineligible for membership, due to club location or other factors. These clubs are affiliated to Toastmasters International and have to be sponsored by an organization, school or a Toastmaster Club. Using the structure and Protocols similar to the Toastmasters program, the “Gavaliers”, as the club members are called, work together, and learn from each other, in a safe and supportive environment. From how to outline a speech to regulating their emotions, overcoming anxiety, making proper introductions, leading impromptu talks, delivering speeches with confident body language, and debating opponents in front of others, Gavel clubs deliver an endless array of invaluable tools.

Gavelier Alisha Khan, a member of Gavel Club of Amanora since 9 months, says, “When I attended the first meeting as a guest, I was amazed to watch the gaveliers co-ordinate with such enthusiasm and was fascinated by the amount of learning that happened in that meeting.” Learning to be an effective public speaker and communicator is an invaluable job skill which pays dividends as one moves forward in life. Parth Girish, a Gavelier since 9 months claims, “Gavel’s club has helped me in Public speaking by encouraging me to give speeches in front of the whole class and motivated me to take up different roles in a fun atmosphere.” Talking about the hands on learning experience he gained at the Gavels club of Amanora, Daksh, a 6 month old Gavelier remarks, “ The club not only gives me a platform to teach myself Public speaking, Communication and leadership skills, but also provides me a chance to upgrade or learn skills which will be helpful to me in the future.”

From personal crises to the academic rigors of high school, teenagers are constantly confronted by difficult situations. Listening, expression, and communication skills play an important role in guiding young people through their teenage years and beyond.

Unlike the classroom setting, Gavel Clubs focus on improvement and not on competing for grades, so it is less intimidating. Madhav, 1 year old Gavelier says, “The uniqueness which I found in gavels club is the supportive nature of teachers, the positive learning environment and most importantly the personal attention of the teachers.” Fidelia Rego feels that she is more confident and more expressive of her thoughts now than she was 8 months ago, and is forever thankful to the mentors and leaders of the Gavel’s Club of Amanora for always guiding her. Toastmasters find an excellent opportunity for community service by volunteering as Mentors and Counsellors to help steer the Gavel clubs to excellence.

Gavelier Saanvi Patnaik of the Gavel Club of Amanora, gratefully says, “I got to learn essential lessons from my mentors TM Maya and others. They are the ones who have helped me in getting comfortable with this club and taught me some great Life lessons. That’s why a huge Shout-Out to my toastmasters and the ones who helped me improve.” TM Maya Madani, one of the mentors of Gavel Club of Amanora, is overwhelmed and feels humbled that as a facilitator she has been able to bring out the hidden trait of confidence that every child possesses. She adds that All it takes is to show them the mirror.

Her co counselor echoes the same when she says, “Being appreciated and valued gives me a sense of satisfaction and boosts my energy to put more effort and time in a worthwhile manner. . Everytime they participate or win any debate or speaking competition, host an event or anchor a show, they drop me a sincere thank you note and trust me, every time I feel, I have once again achieved my purpose of improving little lives.” Khushal Lalwani DTM, who has been associated with the Ahmedabad Gavels Club, the first-ever in Gujarat, proudly says, “Even with the experience of 250 meetings, the club is still as fresh as new and the reason for this energy is the vibrancy of its members. Every Gavelier brings with them exuberance of their passion and energy. Immense planning and efforts of TM Sandeep Poddar and TM Vranda Rathi is also a key reason why the club survived so long and is thriving like never before in keeping with our motto of Learn, Grow and Shine Together..” Gaurav and Girish aptly sum up the Gavel club experience, when they say “We’ve been in the Gavel Club of Amanora for more than 2 years and it has been a wonderful and thrilling experience. From small kids with unending enthusiasm, the teens with their creativity and the support and guidance from the experienced mentors, it is the best mix for growth. My journey couldn’t have started better than giving my first speech in a milestone meeting and having tons of experienced Gaveliers and Toastmasters to give me feedback and learn from . It has been a truly a fun-packed and wonderful adventure.” With the efforts and dedication of the leaders and mentors, Gavel Clubs have provided an outlet for young Minds, helping them gain confidence before they step out into the world, so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow. Undoubtedly, Gavel clubs are creating Tomorrow’s Leaders … Today!!

MEMBER PERSPECTIVE

DISTRICT 98

Have you "Embraced the winner in you"? You win or lose doesn't matter , what really matter is the journey you had till end, whether you enjoyed your journey or not. I have participated in International Speech competition and i didn't win but what makes me more happier was i enjoyed my speech a lot , i enjoyed giving my speech and stories that I added. Winning and losing is not important enjoying your journey is most important!!

Sweta Sao Rungta Toastmasters Club he Winner in Me :) When I joined Toastmasters last year in 2021, I never knew anything about contests and awards. Only thing that I was told about Toastmasters that it is good for public speaking, leadership enhancement and networking. During the pandemic times, networking was utmost important as we hardly had any social life but was locked up by the Lockdown being imposed.

I started participating in contests. I still remember my 1st contest that I participated was in Table Topics Contest in March 2021, just for participating and experiencing it. This year once again I participated in Table Topics Contest and wow I came 2nd. Being the 1st Runner Up was like an unimagined announcement happening. I was on cloud nine and really wanted to celebrate with my family on this victory. This made me realize that Winning or Losing is the part of the Game, unless one does not participate how will one know their progress level. I still cannot believe that I have improved so much subconsciously by the feedback given to me that I have taken my speeches and style of expressing to the next level. It's all about the learning that counts.Go for it. Experience and Embrace the Winner in you for learning new things :)

Heshma Daryanani Bibvewadi Toastmasters Club

What makes you a winner? The will to win or the will to excel? The win to excel is the way forward. To me growth in any discipline signifies your development and upliftment. When we challenge ourselves to newer limits and opportunites, one is aware of how things change and represent themselves in various different forms.

If we determine that we need to cross this hurdle and if you have a dedicated plan, nothing stops you. In my opinion, humans need to keep evolving and the only way to do so is how and when we can challenge to excel and ameliorate our innerselves
