Live, Love & Lighten Up! At the end of the day, all we have is love. - Ina Garten Why we do what we do? It can be our job, hobbies we pursue and even roles we do at Toastmasters. We do for benefits, job for money, hobbies for happiness and roles at Toastmasters for learning, however, there is something else that we all look for at the end of the day. The love and the happiness that we can manifest by doing something we love.

This is what exactly we do and learn at Toastmasters. The art of providing a supportive environment with the love. We encourage - small wins and big wins. We learn together with love, camaraderie, and with a sense of belonging. We give constructive feedback and provide positive affirmations. We help others become confident and competent. As you read through this edition, I urge you to think about how you can spread love in everything and anything you do. I urge you to understand how love can conquer anything and everything and use it as a tool as you lead!

Love conquers all...!!! When we speak about love, it is not just about the love of doing something, it also translates into a way of dealing with others. As an individual, imagine a client or a boss shouting at you! How do you feel? Do you get motivated? Will you be ignited to work? But, imagine the boss clarifies the challenge, helps and explains how to go about with all the love and positive affirmation. It works wonders. It motivates you. It lets you think beyond the box. It gives you an opportunity to experiment. It lets you fail...but fail forward with psychological safety in your mind.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER 2022! The year which truly defines using social media as a tool. Today, who isn’t on one of these sites? Social media definitely conquers all.

Muskan Kandoi

Toastmasters Club of Pune North East Readers & Debaters Club

Being behind D98 social media lens gives me an opportunity everyday to see how members of our fraternity are engaging, enlightening and especially encouraging each other every single day. It’s wonderful to see achievements being recognised and clubs being out there on social media. The love shared between the club members is beautifully shown with pictures, reels and snippets from the meeting. Keep sharing those! We as D98 social media team, truly believe in giving value than going viral. Furqan & I are loving the responses that all of you have showed on the special content carousel that is being shared with all of you. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming days. If you have anything to share regarding D98 (ideas to achievements to announcements), just drop a message to me & Furqan at socialmediamanagers@district98.org.

DESIGNER OF THE MONTH The fact that inspired me to join Toastmasters was to be able to transform thoughts into well-curated speech and the complimentary confidence, which is key to success.

Neha Verma Oracle Hyderabad Toastmasters Club

However, what made me a true Toastmaster is the bond I developed with people, how I am able to learn new things and how everyone is so helpful and inspiring and the dedication mentors have. I am grateful to my mentor TM Gagan and to all the great toastmasters that I came to know in this journey. Every meeting motivates me to push the boundaries, the experience and the learning is limitless.

Love can Move Mountains… Movies - Hollywood or Bollywood - dramas, tragedies, love stories, musicals or even war stories, generally portray how the power of love will conquer everything, will move mountains. So whether the story is about star crossed lovers, delinquent children, sacrificing parents, siblings or friends, we are led to believe and hope that there will be a ‘happily ever after’ ending. But in real life, it isn’t very easy to believe that love alone will overcome pain and grief…. especially if you’ve been through a tough 2 years, lost a job or a loved one, been through depression or illness, stressed at work or just not been able to do the things you’ve wanted to do. It isn’t easy to have faith that the situation will get better and that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. But when you read the next 2 stories, you will know and believe that the love, compassion and courage of friends and family, or even strangers, can help you overcome every adversity, every mountain. In 2012, bomb disposal expert Taylor Morris was severely injured after the explosion of an improvised bomb in Afghanistan. He lost all four limbs. But his girlfriend helped him recover and took care of him during this incredibly challenging time. He learned to walk again with his new prosthetic limbs. After Taylor recovered, he proposed to his beloved girlfriend and they got married. Love, compassion and courage moved their mountain.

Here is another story of Dashrath Manjhi who came quite close to actually moving a mountain. One day his wife fell while crossing a nearby hill and hurt herself seriously. She needed quick medical assistance, but that wasn’t possible due to the hill that isolated their small village from the next town. Tragically, his wife died from serious injuries before Dashrath could do anything about it. From that day, for the next 22 years, Dashrath chipped away to create a small path through the mountain, to the village beyond and helped many scores from their suffering. The magic of love, strength, courage and support of family and friends should never be underestimated. It helps us in times of adversity. It helps us move mountains.

DISTRICT PR MANAGER'S ADDRESS

DISTRICT 98

Come Fall in Love... I complete 7 years in Toastmasters International this year, and it's a great time to introspect on one of the longest relationships I've had in my life - so much so, that my mother often teases me that I'm married to Toastmasters now! This is a story I share often about how I came to be a member; back in 2015, I had just moved to Hyderabad post my MBA and was completely new to the city. I didn't know anyone, had no friends here and honestly, was just waiting for my orientation program at work to get over so that I could move back to Pune. I came across a Toastmasters Club meeting in my corporate, and more than anything, I thought maybe this could be a place where I could find like-minded people. Honestly, it never started as a need to be a better communicator or leader - I just wanted to make friends. In the years since passed, I not only found friends, but I also found a second family in this community!

Toastmasters is the place members find love - not with their respective partners (although there are quite a few couples in D98 who found each other through Toastmasters), but with what is a better version of themselves. They love the process of learning, unlearning and relearning. They love discovering their confident selves who are ready to take on the world and all its challenges. They love the skills they learn, passions they identify, and paths they venture out on. And if that isn't a strong enough reason to stay a Toastmaster for 7 long years, then what is? So come to Toastmasters, and fall in love with your transformed self!

Toastmasters for me is more than the platform for skill development - it is about the people we work with, learn from, lead and are led by. Toastmasters is a blossoming friendship that transcends roles and geographies, it is finding mentors who are invested in your growth, it is finding relationships that solidify into partnerships at work and beyond.

Love Conquers All - Covered by Venkatraman Balasubramanian

When the Chief Editor, Nishant Mehta, DTM, asked me to do the cover story for this issue on the theme ‘Love conquers all’. Little did I realize the hard work and effort it would take. I spread my net wide by traversing across all the regions through my connections. The effort was worth the stories I got to hear and document. It's lovely that District 98 has seen wonderful relationships blossom in the last many years, and truly, love conquers all. Below are some excerpts of my conversations with our Toastmasters in District 98.

She signs off with the note ‘So a perfect relationship isn’t perfect, it’s just that both people never give up!’ Mukta Nadkar, DTM & Shireesh Nadkar, DTM

What is it that keeps two people happy and together? She feels it is love, mutual respect understanding, conversations and acceptance. If this can be the foundation of a relationship, everything else will fall into place. You will value each other, look for common interests, laugh and love life. Such has been her journey with my husband Toastmaster Shireesh Nadkar, for forty eight years. Their relationship has been based on respect and equality. They always stood side-byside, supporting each other and cherishing their moments together. Even in Toastmasters, both have worked for close to sixteen years, learning, sharing and making wonderful friends.

Usha Udayshankar, DTM & Udayshankar Bolan, DTM

A great relationship is about two things: First, appreciating the similarities and second, respecting the differences. They have been married for the past forty two years out of which eighteen years in Toastmasters has been a part of her life and twenty four years for her husband. As both were members of the same program but in different areas and divisions in Dubai, there was stiff competition at home itself!!

Now back in Pune, both are members of the same club - Toastmasters Club of Pune South East for the past nine years and have fun moments during the meetings. Having completed two paths and earned two DTMs, their lives continue to be full of learning and fun!

of

Pramod Nair, DTM & Lakshmy Nair

Pramod and Lakshmy Nair have been married for fifteen years now. Over the years, they evolved from lovers to being the best thing in each other’s life. They are looking forward to gracefully grow together. Osho’s quote is their secret. “If you love a person, you accept the total person with all the defects. Because those defects are a part of the person. Never try to change a person you love, because the very effort to change says that you love half, and the other half of the person is not accepted. When you love, you simply love." Pramod is the current District 98 Finance Manager.

Love is a journey beyond boundaries and needs. Their journey through love has been with boldness and maturity with learning. A new spectrum opened up when Pragya Jain & Rahul Jain both became Toastmasters. The growth, learning and confusion took a different turn by striving hard to match up with meetings clashes, contests and so much more thriving to become better each day. Rahul Jain opined that conversations became endless from club activities to speeches to leaderships and so much more. It taught them to grow and to support each other through the journey. Their communication gave way to smooth conversations and better understanding and respecting each other’s pace and desire to learn and manage the time. That is when they realized that Love conquers all. The pandemic kept us secluded within our homes, but the virtual world was a blessing in disguise. With a toddler, a child, and no house-help, they had travelled virtually all over the world by attending over four hundred meetings in six months. With prepared speeches presented at odd hours, Table Topics speeches with the toddler sleeping on the lap and the son aspiring to be a Gavalier. Rahul concludes that the ultimate blessing is to have someone in your life that will always do what is best for you. As a result, the tussle was for each other rather than with each other!

COVER STORY

DISTRICT 98

Shailendra Singh & Deepika Kumari

It feels like yesterday that Deepika and I met over a cup of coffee. It was in that meeting that she had told me that she would like to marry a toastmaster. I did not know what Toastmasters was at that point. Six months later we were married and one year later, I was a Toastmaster. Since that day, Toastmasters meetings are something over which we have bonded together. All our Sunday mornings are reserved for Toastmaster meetings. We love to help each other in our communication and leadership journey. I believe our time in Toastmasters has helped us become more open to taking feedback from each other and helped us in our relationship.

The strong pillars of our marriage are respect and love. We supported each other to pursue our passions, whether it is Kalpana's dance or my coin collection. I joined Toastmasters in May 2019 and Kalpana noticed the transformation I went through and got inspired and joined Toastmasters in Jan 2020. If it wasn't her support, I wouldn’t pursued various leadership roles in Toastmasters neither would have been able to visit Toastmaster clubs across 143 countries. Toastmasters has helped us to rediscover ourselves and also strengthen our relationship. It helped us to Respond rather than reacting in every walk of life.

Nikita Punjabi & Aniket Rai

Toastmasters is one of those things which has strengthened our bond. Our journey has been for 3 years but we have miles to go forward and we look forward to our time in Toastmasters. Shailendra is the current District 98 Logistics Manager and Deepika is an Area Director.

In Toastmasters, we grow by taking different roles. And so do we in our relationships. Sometimes you are each other's mentor, evaluator, sergeant at arms. Raghunadha Raju, DTM & Kalpana

I met Kalpana at a midsized IT organization where we were colleagues. What attracted me towards her was the continuous smile she had. I gathered courage to propose her and though things had rough start but it went smooth when our families agreed.

Your relationship with your better half is your life's most important partnership. And as is the case with any great partnership, you have continue putting in the efforts to make your relationships, get better and better. P.S - if you're a Toastmaster couple, keep healthy boundaries between Toastmasters so that there's ample space for other avenues of your relationship, to flourish equally well

MEMBER PERSPECTIVE

DISTRICT 98

Forging Relations at Toastmasters... I joined Toastmasters last May after having attended an Open House session and I was completely blown away by the culture of professionalism the club harbours. Each meeting was meticulously planned, each role-player was very professional in their demeanour yet despite all this there was an air of warmth and togetherness in the club. As VPPR of the club since I've been grateful to have known so many wonderful people within and beyond the club. While working in teams for a PR project, the midnight oil we burnt to get posters prepared and writeups written were a trifle exhausting at the time, but now looking back at it made me realise how much I bonded with my teammates. As VPPR, I had to encourage and motivate team members to go through with demanding projects, take up challenging roles and ideate differently - thus I learned what it was like to lead a team like a Captain of a ship sailing on choppy waters.

DESIGN OF THE MONTH! Congratulations !! Prathamesh Borade Backpackers Toastmasters Club

When organising meets and special sessions, especially when working with the ExCom and while working with members from other clubs, we learned from each other different ways of approaching a problem especially when unexpected surprises pop up, putting aside our differences and working towards a common goal. Toastmasters thereby gave me insights into diversified thinking, conflict resolution and intense teamwork. Yet through and through I realise at the end of it all, how many friends I've made and the family I call Toastmasters. Truly Toastmasters is the one-stop destination to forge relationships and build professional virtues. Siddharth Sadanandan RG Doyens Toastmasters Club Liked this article? Share feedback with Editor
