COMMUNICATE 98 | APRIL 2022

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Eloquence is always close to my heart. Eloquence is always close to my heart. Not just because I love attending conferences and networking with people. I have attended more than 500 conferences in Finance, travel, and entrepreneurship space, but with Toastmasters Conferences, the relationships go beyond business. You cheer your mentee as (s)he stands for an office and you cheer your favourite Contestant as (s)he tests mettle at the district stage, you meet people, make friends and cherish those friendships forever.

DISTRICT 98

This is for participants. The experience goes to the next level for organizers. Being the convener for Eloquence 2017 in Mumbai, the bonds I made, the lessons I learnt - I cherish them till date! Keynote speakers are one of the reasons to attend Eloquence. The learnings they give are immense and to the next level. Being online, you can experience all of these sitting at the comfort of your home.

DISTRICT DIRECTOR'S ADDRESS A Toast to Eloquence! This traditional Annual Conference, on 7-8 May, which hosted the Finals of the Speech Contests, Keynotes, Workshops, District Officer Installation and much more, was certainly the highlight of the year. Months of planning, organizing and finetuning were precursors to unveiling this magnificent event. Scores of Toastmasters were involved in various teams under the able guidance of the Convenors and District Program Quality team. As District Director, I was immensely proud to see the effort and enthusiasm of all.

DISTRICT 98

Eloquence brought out the best in everyone – contestants, officials and volunteers. It was truly a platform that showcased great teamwork and talent. It was a place where we gathered to compete, cheer and celebrate! Toastmasters has been, is and will continue to be a big part of our lives. This was the last Eloquence of a large District 98, before we reform into 3 Districts. The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate -Oprah Winfrey

COVER STORY

TOWARDS

DISTRICT 98

TOMORROW Covered by Madhuri Vadari If you are looking for opportunities to learn, grow and network in Toastmasters, then the annual conference of District 98 - Eloquence - is the place for you. A confluence of Toastmasters from 290 corporate and community clubs serving 5000+ members spread across seven states of India.

Echoing the same sentiment, TM Syril Thomas, the Co Convener of Eloquence 2021 states, "We all know Rome was not built in one day. Eloquence 2021 was built over efforts of 100+ team members, 500+ virtual connects, 1000+ marketing connects over a span of 130 days and night."

Organizing a gala event of such gigantic proportions over a span of two days with a different theme each year is definitely not a cake walk. As the Eloquence fever comes to an end we explore what it takes to accomplish such a daunting task. As TM Vamshi Krishna Alladi, the Co Convener of Eloquence 2018 puts it, "Eloquence was an enriching leadership experience driving 60+ volunteers across many teams for more than 6 months right from presenting it in the Confluence 2017 to the post success meet."

Though a challenging task demanding time and efforts, TM Lasya, considers Eloquence as an event that brings everyone together and becomes a source of networking, learning and fun! Elaborating on the reason for volunteering as the Co Convener of Eloquence 2022, she says, "As an attendee at Eloquence in 2018 and 2019, I met people across the states. I had a plethora of memories and learnings. Now, it’s time I give back to the community by organising the event as good as the ones I have attended".

TOWARDS

DISTRICT 98

TOMORROW Every conference is a projection of the core values of Toastmasters – Integrity, Respect, Service and Excellence. Eloquence helps members hone their communication and leadership skills when they volunteer to be a part of the organizing committee, working together to overcome all challenges in putting up the biggest event of the District. Nagappan Palaniappan, DTM sharing his experience as Finance Committee Chair of Eloquence 2015, says, "We had multiple challenges in organizing District 98's first ever Annual Conference. We booked a Gala venue (Four Star Hotel) which resulted in the higher budget for the conference, and faced the challenge of selling the registrations at a higher price to match the venue charges. But our competent team not only managed to get sufficient sponsorship revenues to break-even but also took care of the District expenses and made a minimal profit for the District." Speaking of challenges, TM Vamshi Krishna cites, "We had to face some challenges in coordinating with the hotel, volunteers and the leadership team but we could pull it off very well with everyone’s support.” He believes, “When we have a vision, no matter how tough the mission appears, it is very well achievable!"

A clear Vision, prudent Strategy and brilliant Teamwork makes everything possible. “The Vision of Eloquence 2017 was ‘Maximum City Maximum Experience’, recalls Nishant Mehta DTM, Eloquence Chair 2017. “Providing this in a city that is costliest, busiest and with some space crunch was a challenge before me during Eloquence 2017. But, with the right strategy, guidance and execution, it turned out to be the best Eloquence in the history of D98.”

Setting up the stage for keynote speeches, workshops, contests and entertainment along with networking opportunities, the key factor according to TM Syril is, "Focussing on putting all efforts towards providing a WOW experience to each delegate who attends the conference."

Together

TOWARDS

DISTRICT 98

TOMORROW To deliver such an experience, Eloquence 2018 theme itself was "Unconference". TM Vamshi Krishna Alladi, the Co Convener shares, "Apart from the regular conference, Delegates were bombarded with varied choices of experience to take with them! We had various initiatives like human library, Pecha kucha sessions, Limca book of Records for longest TT marathon, Ramzan walk, Cricket tournament and a special Unconferencing section with Zumba, photography, graphology jewellery making, Rubik's cube solving, treasure hunt, tarot card reading and the list goes on!" Interestingly, when the Conference went Virtual, the Eloquence 2021 team left no stone unturned to give the best virtual experience to all the attendees. The attempt was to deliver a superlative conference leveraging contemporary technologies. As TM Syril Thomas, proudly shares, "Fulfilling the Promise of Redefining Experience, for the first time, we planned a semi-final, unveiled a special Website for Eloquence, initiated Chatbot, Leaderboard, Custom Gamified experience and a 3D VR experience.” Thus proving that although we all hope those days of attending non-virtual conferences will be back soon, putting together a Virtual Conference is no less exciting. Marking the conclusion of a month long extravaganza, TM Lasya emotionally concludes, “Eloquence 2022 is even more special as it’s the last Eloquence of the undivided District 98. Although it’s time to part ways, we are one in spirit, marching ‘Together towards Tomorrow’.”

MEMBER PERSPECTIVE DISTRICT 98

THE PROUD TOASTMASTER IN ME.

THE LEADER IN ME..

Life goes up or down, I always have friends to count Every meeting is a treat, Yes, it is Toastmasters indeed. Learning is immense, and happiness is speechless I wonder, where I have been From meetings to contests to roles, I wish, I could serve more and more Where achievements know no boundaries, Yes it is Toastmasters indeed.

The leader in me was silent. I thought that is what it meant. No instructions given, no problems solved. A negative emotion for all involved. Then I joined toastmasters. Delegation is the term I perceived. Empathy and collaboration are what I practiced. Mentoring is what I pursued. And then there lived a happy family of friends ever after.
