05| “Optimizing Shape” Building Diagrams
CONTOUR +7.00
ZONING
WIND
“Landing” the general floor level on the contour +7.00m and engulfing (half-way drop of) the building to the ground, efficiently shield the house from the North.
Every living space / residence needs of public and private areas. Isolating the working areas and creating multiple getaways were both great requirements from the beginning.
Greek islands in Aegean Pelagos have a major issue with the winds in the majority of the year. Traditionally the builders have minimized the openings to the north facades, an idea that was blend to our design.
06| “Framing the Views” Building Diagrams
FAN=SHAPED DESIGN
LANDMARKS
VIEWS
The fan-shaped design of the Master Plan creates multiple views to both sides of the rocky island and towards the major landmarks.
From the interiors and the exterior gathering points a person can gaze towards Dorousa island & Prof. Ilias Chapel (West), “Lagoon” & pine tree forest (East), fish boat harbor & tavern (South).
All rooms were designed in a way to have great perspectives to the unique environment. Bedrooms and living room are facing to the South-West and the evening sunset, while Office, Workshop and Everyday room are facing to the calmer East to receive the morning sun.
07| “Daylight Control” Building Diagrams
SUN PATH
NATURAL LIGHT
SKYLIGHTS
Studying the sun orientation and angle through a full calendar is essential to create contemporary and sustainable architecture.
Daylight analysis in Mediterranean zone can give great results to the interiors, when it’s utilized / harnessed properly. As a result of this, both winter and summer benefit the premises to the maximum.
The strategic addition of skylights and light wells is an elegant way to maximize the sun penetration to a building.
08| “Maximizing Greenery” Building Diagrams
GREENERY
AREAS
Maximizing the green areas doesn’t necessarily translate to high maintenance and big water consumption. All fauna selected is from the Mediterranean area, with 75% of it described as “pine tree” or “ground covering” plants.
Architectural study’s direction was to make the most of the land and its potentials. Not by building big, but by expanding in x-y axes and creating a strong connection between the interiors and the exteriors.
09| “Defining Outdoors” Building Diagrams
CONNECTIVITY
CAR VS WALK
ACTIVITIES
The unique position of Aponisos island created another one need: the connection to the mainland and the surroundings should be done both from the land and the sea.
Privacy cannot been compromised, even among the owners. Master planning illustrates a distinct separation between the vehicles / services and the promenades.
The premises and the location offer a great number of activities to proprietors and their guests: swimming, sailing, walking or riding a bike, hiking, gaze points and relaxing zones, gathering areas, a sanctuary / oratory, are only a few worth-mentioning.
10| “Special Features” Building Diagrams
WATER ELEMENT
TRADITION / LOCAL
Water is a vital element for the residence, for the most obvious reasons. The basement pool and the pond with the “waterfalls” at the main entrance were created to complement to this.
Aponisos Residence has also a great number of references in the religious and the local tradition, such as: earthy materials & finishes (stone, pebbles), structures (mosaics), a chapel, a specific color scheme (Cretan Era), etc.
