An international research team headed by Prof. Dr. Cord Drögemüller and Prof. Dr. Tosso Leeb from the Institute for Genetics at the University of Bern has discovered a gene mutation that causes Brittle Bone Disease (Osteogenesis imperfecta, or OI) in Dachshunds. This serious hereditary disease also occurs in other species and shows similar clinical symptoms in Dachshunds and humans. It expresses itself as soon as birth in newborns with extremely brittle bones and teeth. In dogs, the affected animals must be euthanized if they do not die shortly after birth.

Most of us know that Sidney was passionate about whatever she did – and her dogs were no exception. An e-mail she sent to me talked about how many people don’t understand “dog people”; the time they spend, the distances they travel, or the costs involved in having what many consider, “just a dog”. But these thoughts and things had little impact or significance to Sidney because she knew that the gentle touch of her dogs could always give her comfort, that they were her companions when she was alone, that they often provided moments of great delight and pride; that they were, in fact, the very essence of friendship.

The promotional video for Susan Garrett’s DVD Crate Games refers to it as being “for self-control and motivation.” What dog couldn’t use those attributes, whether it does performance events or not? This article is a discussion of how we have begun to apply the ideas in this video to our own young dogs – Holly’s 7 month-old Lark and Sharon’s two year-old Gee! – and what success we have had with it. We are not trying to teach you what the video contains – you’ll have to buy the video yourself for that – but rather to say whether we have found the video’s content to be of use in our own training.

From the time he was born, Harper was my boy. I adored the work ethic of his father, Wrinkles, and was hopeful the match with Robbie Loyd’s bitch, Sweetie, would produce a good looking dog with drive. The breeding, which produced 2 pups, worked as hoped and both Harper, and his brother Maru, are Dual Champions with fantastic work ethics. I started clicker training this litter while they were weaning using a double click (I know it is not the standard usage!) when food went down. The connection was made and this started the wonderful journey with Harper and clicker training.

“Brittle Bone” Gene in Dachshunds Discovered New Genetic Test Can Help Breeding submitted by Carrie Hamilton

Collagens are the most common proteins in human and animal bodies and give the bones their elasticity. Recently a new mutation in an additional gene which is needed for the correct formation of collagen was found in Dachshunds with Brittle Bone Disease (OI). A search for abnormalities in the genes of five affected Dachshunds with severe Brittle Bone Disease showed that all had a mutation on the same gene – resulting in the incomplete development of a specific helper protein for collagen. This hereditary defect of the so-called SERPINH1 gene leads to Brittle Bone Disease in dogs. Brittle Bone Disease or OI in Dachshunds is a genetically caused disease. As the mode of inheritance is recessive, the mutation must therefore be present in both parental copies (alleles) of the gene. Only then is the Dachshund affected and therefore both parents of affected dogs must be carriers. Hence it is prudent to test breeding animals to determine they are free of the OI predisposition. Brittle Bone Disease or OI is not gender specific and can therefore affect male and female puppies. The recessive mode of inheritance means that only homozygous animals actually are affected. Heterozygous animals are therefore healthy. All parents of affected puppies, which outwardly cannot be distinguished from unaffected Dachshunds, are heterozygous carriers of the Dachshund Club of America

mutation. As so-called carriers they can pass the mutation on to their offspring. As long as no genetic test was available, such carriers could only be identified after the occurrence of puppies with Brittle Bone Disease. It is not currently known how wide this hereditary fault is spread in the Dachshund breed. Therefore the frequency of the OI mutation in the actual breeding population is unknown. Recently, in two independent litters of Dachshunds suspected of Brittle Bone Disease, which were also falsely identified as so-called ‘swimmer puppies’, the parents of the affected puppies were identified as carries of the OI mutation (OIC) via the new genetic test. Thus, one may certainly conclude a distribution of the OI mutation in Dachshunds. With the newly developed genetic test, a suitable tool is available for breeders for the consistent fight against Brittle Bone Disease in Dachshunds. The new genetic test detects the OI mutation itself. This way it can be determined early in the life of an animal if it carries the undesired mutation OI, which is called OIC. Tested dogs, which do not carry this mutation and are therefore clear, meaning OI free, are called OIF. The genetic test can be administered for any breeding animal of any age via a blood test. The genetic test offers a simple and reliable opportunity for the selection of

genetically healthy Dachshunds. Thus, in the future, the occurrence of additional puppies with Brittle Bone Disease can simply be avoided. The table depicts how the inheritance of Brittle Bone Disease actually happens. For example, from the mating of one genetically clear animal (OIF) with a carrier (OIC), half of the offspring may be carriers of the genetic defect. They are able to subsequently pass on the undesired mutation. If both parents are carriers one can actually expect sick offspring. The goal of breeding can only be the mating of two genetically clear parent animals, resulting in homozygous clear offspring. If now, for example, an OIC tested sire is used that passes on the mutation to an average of half of his offspring, it depends on the dam whether she is genetically clear or a carrier. In the first case approximately 50% of the puppies are potential carriers, in the second case the percentage of carriers is even higher and every fourth puppy can succumb to Brittle Bone Disease. The primary goal should be to breed carriers only to non-carriers. This guarantees that no further puppy falls ill with OI. Animal welfare must be the priority! For the health of the breed, however, it is

Vaccines and Vaccination Protocols T he advent of canine vaccines has vastly changed veterinary medicine in the last 50 years. There has been a significant decrease in the number of dogs with infectious disease; before the vaccine was developed for distemper, it was the number one cause of death among dogs. Now, where the distemper vaccine is used, cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death. The importance of vaccinations to our dogs’ well being cannot be overstated. However, what are the guidelines? What are the “rules” to follow? How do we know how much is “too much?” The purpose of a vaccine is to mimic an infection so that the immune system is introduced to the pathogens that will cause protective immunity without causing clinical disease. It is meant to ensure a faster, stronger response to the pathogen upon re-exposure. The purpose of re-vaccination is to maintain the immune system’s “memory” of that pathogen so that the vaccinated dog continues to mount an attack with every exposure so that the infectious agent does not result in a disease state.

Types of Vaccines There are several types of vaccines. They include conventional vaccines (modified live and killed), recombinant vaccines (genetically Dachshund Club of America

engineered and proteins/ peptides) and DNA vaccines. Modified live vaccines mimic natural infection. They are based on attenuation (reduction of virulence) of the original virus such that they are limited in their ability to cause illness. The vaccine virus follows the exact same path as the wildtype (original) virus does; replicating and getting distributed throughout the body, exposing all parts of the immune system to the pathogen against which you are vaccinating. This type of vaccine is useful because it generally provides a long-lasting immunity; though it can also inadvertently cause disease if the vaccine is inadequately attenuated. A killed vaccine is made of a virus or a strain related to the virus that has been treated to make it non-viable (incapable of replicating and causing disease). The advantage is that the immune system is presented with all of the viral components, especially with those that are conserved between the different subtypes. However, revaccination is necessary because of the shorter duration of immunity. There are several types of vaccines. They include conventional vaccines (modified live and killed), recombinant vaccines (genetically engineered and proteins/peptides) and DNA vaccines. Vaccines continued from page 11 used in human and veterinary medicine. In veterinary medicine, recombinant vaccines involve inoculation with only selected genetic sequences derived from the disease producing virus or bacteria. The vaccine does not expose the individual dog to the whole organism. In dogs, recombinant vaccines have been found to be very safe, highly effective, and produce a long duration of immunity. Vaccines that use proteins or peptides from the pathogenic virus create vaccines that are highly specific—these vaccines are very pure and adverse reactions are rare. The fact that they are highly specific is also their downfall; they are not ideal for protection from organisms that tend to mutate. DNA vaccines entail injecting highly specific DNA sequences into muscle in a manner that leads to the production (expression) of specific proteins. These vaccines are effective because they elicit both the humoral (pertaining to antibodies) and cell-mediated immunity. The only DNA vaccine licensed for use in the dog is approved as an aid in the treatment (not prevention) of oral melanoma. Depending on the vaccine type, different routes of administration are used: injection (parenteral), which can be subcutaneous or intramuscular, topical (intranasal) or transdermal (air pressure, through the skin). Intranasal vaccines are typically modified live viruses and bacteria, and must never be injected. Because they mimic infection best, they provide best immune response. Side effects include mild to moderate clinical signs of disease. Parenteral vaccines can be either modified live viruses/bacteria (MLV) or killed viruses/bacteria. With MLV vaccines, there is a faster immune response, but there can be side effects, and they should not be used in pregnant bitches. With killed vaccines, there is no risk of shedding, but boosters are necessary and the adjuvant (substance that carries the virus) has been attributed to causing cancer (fibrosarcoma) in cats.

Core Vaccines Core Vaccines are those that are recommended for all dogs, barring special circumstances. These core vaccines include: distemper, parvovirus, canine adenovirus I/II, and rabies. While parainfluenza is no longer considered a core vaccine, it is generally included in the combo core vaccines and will therefore be discussed here. The following descriptions are taken from the University of Tennessee Breeders’ Symposium abstract by Dr. Margret Casal of the University of Pennsylvania.

Canine Distemper Vaccine: Currently, distemper vaccines are modified-live vaccines, which are very effective. It was previously thought that combining distemper and Parvo in the same vaccine would lead to a decrease or a delay in seroconversion to the distemper component. However, (Dr. Casal’s) studies and those from Cornell have been unable to substantiate such claims. If a patient is immune deficient or pregnant, MLV vaccines should not be used, because they may cause disease in the patient or the fetuses, respectively. There is a recombinant Distemper vaccine currently available that could be used for those dogs in which MLV vaccines are not an option.

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) Vaccine: Modified live vaccines are available for dogs. Killed vaccines are no longer available because of poor efficacy. Today’s MLV Parvovirus Dachshund Club of America

vaccines are less attenuated (new-generation, high- titer, low-passage) than previous ones and are claimed to be able to “break through” maternally derived immunity earlier than the previous generation of MLV parvovirus vaccines. In a recent study 60 mixed-breed pups were vaccinated with these newer versions of the CPV vaccines at 6, 9, and 12 weeks. The results showed that all pups had seroconverted by 15 weeks of age, suggesting a faster response and higher serum neutralization titers. Alternatively, if there are immune deficient animals present, they may contract the disease from the vaccine virus. There are myths about the MLV Parvovirus vaccine suppressing the immune system. However, all of the scientific studies done to date have not been able to substantiate such claims. Another myth is that it is more difficult to immunize Rottweilers and Dobermans against CPV infections. While these dog breeds may develop more serious disease after natural infection, they mount immune responses to an efficacious vaccine just like any other dog. Lastly, Parvovirus outbreaks are not prevented with more frequent vaccination. The only way to prevent outbreaks is with proper hygiene, even if this means foot baths and limited contact. CPV is spread by contact with contaminated shoes, clothes, soil, toys and other dogs, while CDV is passed on almost entirely by direct contact with infected dogs.

Canine Adenovirus Vaccine: Canine Adenovirus (CAV) type 1 causes infectious canine hepatitis and CAV-2 is part of the kennel cough complex. Because of previously reported side effects (Blue Eye) when using CAV-1 vaccines, all vaccine manufacturers now offer attenuated CAV-2 in their vaccines as it provides cross-protection against infections with CAV-1. Parenteral and intranasal MLV vaccines are available. Minor side effects are possible with the intranasal vaccine such as nasal and ocular discharge, and allergic reactions to the parenteral vaccine have been reported.

Canine Parainfluenza Vaccine: This old tried and true vaccine comes in a parenteral and intranasal MLV form. It is an effective vaccine in the prevention of this component of the kennel cough complex. Side effects include those seen with intranasal CAV-2 vaccines.

Non-Core (Optional) Vaccines These vaccines are recommended based on the lifestyle and location of the animal in question and include: leptospirosis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Lyme disease, and parainfluenza virus. Again, the descriptions below are courtesy of Dr. Casal: Leptospira Vaccines: Because all Leptospira vaccines are bacterins, their use may result in allergic reactions. The later the vaccine is administered during the puppy series, the less likely the allergic reaction. Current AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) guidelines recommend delaying this vaccine, especially in small breeds, until the CORE vaccines are completed. Most current Leptospira vaccines contain four different serovars: grippotyphosa, canicola, icterohemor-rhagica, and pomona. The vaccine is now purified, which may reduce allergic reactions and although titers drop significantly after 6 months, challenge with pathogenic forms of L. icterohemorrhagica and canicola one year after vaccination did not cause disease. Generally, this vaccine is recommended to be given in spring time, especially for dogs that come in contact with wildlife or city rodents. Lyme Disease (Borreliosis) Vaccines: Lyme Disease in dogs can be prevented by the use of tick prevention and vaccines. The Lyme vaccines

have been criticized by some veterinarians as being ineffective. While it is true that some vaccinated dogs do contract the disease, it appears that vaccinated animals are less likely to contract the disease than unvaccinated animals. Vaccination is generally limited to dogs traveling to or living in high prevalence areas.

Bordetella bronchiseptica Vaccine: This is probably not a very effective vaccine, and there are not enough studies to document either short- or long-term efficacy. However, there are some kennels that require Bordetella vaccinations before the dog can be boarded. The intranasal vaccine seems to provide marginally better protection than the injectable form. The dog should receive a booster 2-4 weeks after the initial vaccination, if given the killed injectable vaccine. A single dose of the intranasal vaccine is likely to be sufficient in a puppy older than 14 weeks of age, when the maternal antibodies have dropped to undetectable levels.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) Vaccine: In May, 2009, the USDA granted a conditional license for the first vaccine against Canine Flu. This vaccine is expected to reduce incidence, severity and duration of the disease but does not necessarily prevent infection altogether. (Conditional license means it has been proven safe with good signs of efficacy, but additional studies are needed to gather more information. The Canine Health Foundation has funded Grant 1105: Understanding the Dynamics of Canine Influenza Virus Transmission in Dog Populations and Intervention Strategies for Reducing Transmission, a study which will model the transmission of canine flu in a population with and without vaccination and will be a major component in determining the recommended use of this new canine flu vaccine.) So how do you decide which vaccines to give your dog? You should work closely with your veterinarian to determine the risks involved with each animal and treat the individual patient based on their specific needs. Differences in risk of exposure to infectious diseases, age and health of the patient, and potential side effects of certain vaccines, make it next to impossible to recommend one single vaccination protocol for all dogs. Therefore, for optimal protection, each dog should be examined on a yearly basis even if vaccines are not to be given in that particular year. Health and life style changes can be assessed and the dog’s vaccination protocol can be adjusted as needed. Dr. Richard Ford of North Carolina State University has assembled a website, www.dvmvac. com that carries the American Animal Hospital Association’s guidelines for vaccinations, various definitions and a forum for questions and answers for both dogs and cats.

friendship. The kind of friendship she shared with all of us. Sidney knew that her dogs reinforced her enormous capacity for compassion, her patience, and her ability to appreciate the pure joy in a single moment. Whether she was at a field trial, an agility trial, or just walking on the beach – her dogs contributed to her incredible humanity. She knew unconditional love from them and she shared her own love with everyone she drew into her circle of life. Sidney also shared with me a thought about the future in another email I read. The future for her was like keeping your fork after the dishes are cleared from dinner because you were anticipating something wonderful was yet to come...like chocolate cake...or something else equally wonderful. So Sid, I know you have kept your fork...for the wonderful new horizon ahead. You will always be like the stars above us, we may not always see them, but we know they are always there. Thank you for teaching us dignity, grace, and courage in the face of personal pain and difficulties. Thank you for making us smile, for encouraging us to succeed, and for always giving us a word of praise. Thank you for sharing your own “starlight”, your knowledge, and your art – but most of all thank you for opening your heart to us and for sharing your joyful, giving, friendship. In honor and memory of my very dear friend, Sidney Frissell Stafford November 30, 1935 - April 1, 2011

I spent Sunday afternoon reflecting on the countless special times I’ve had with Sidney over the past 25 years. Some of those occasions involved working alongside of her, sharing in her creative ventures (as we did for her book project about Toni) – or working with her doing wedding and dog photography, or enjoying the music she loved, or attending a play at the Gateway in Bellport, or viewing a SUNY film festival together – all of which are memories I cherish. And a good many of those times I spent with Sidney were also in the company of the beautiful dachshunds she bred and raised. I am privileged to own, coown or to have bred to the Longhaired variety which established her reputation in the Dachshund community. I also spent time Sunday reading through several of the e-mails Sidney sent to me over the years – yes, I kept them all. Two of them especially stood out to me because they seemed to reveal a glimpse into the character of the wonderful woman and friend that made Sidney – Sidney. Most of us know that she was passionate about whatever she did – and her dogs were no exception. One of these e-mails she sent to me, talked about how many people don’t understand “dog people”; the time they spend, the distances they travel, or the costs involved in having what many consider, “just a dog”. But these thoughts and things had little impact or significance to Sidney because she knew that the gentle touch of her dogs could always give her comfort, that they were her companions when she was alone, that they often provided moments of great delight and pride; that they were, in fact, the very essence of Dachshund Club of America

My fondest memories of Sidney are of playing with and evaluating litters of dachshund pups, hers, mine and ours. One time I remember telling her the following day of the difficult birthing that Caroline had in the middle of the night when whelping three pups sired by Gastsby. My regular vet wanted to see my bitch that very day because of the complications. I did not want to leave the newborns alone, and was concerned that Joel, my husband, would not get home before the veterinary office had closed. Fifteen minutes later Athena Whiteman, another dear friend, and Sidney were at my door. They had already told the vet I was on my way, as they shooed me out of the house. They puppy-sat till Joel came home and then ordered him to change out of his work clothes before they would allow him to see “their” pups. They stayed till I returned. From then on those pups were theirs. Both friends are gone, as are the pups, but the memories of their kindness will never diminish. All of my current champions are descended from this breeding. Sidney’s mother, Toni Frissell was renowned world wide as a photographer, many of whose works are archived in the Library of Congress. During these years Sidney wanted to assemble some of her photographs in book form as a remembrance. She approached publishing houses one after another, but nothing worked out for some time. One

day the phone rang and a voice asked to speak to Sidney. It was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, working for Doubleday who said she wanted to work with Sidney to publish the book. There were ties to Toni Frissell already, as she was the photographer of the Kennedy wedding. The book, Toni Frissell, Photographs 1933-1967 authored by Sidney and dedicated to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was published in 1994, and I believe it was the last book Mrs. Onassis edited before her death. Jackie went to the Library of Congress in Washington to select photographs for a book of Toni Frissell’s photography to be published in 1994. She is pictured going through the boxes with the curator of photography, Beverly Brannon (left), and Frissell’s daughter, Sidney Frissell Stafford (right). Frissell, like Jackie herself, was a debutante who longed to break out of her High Society straitjacket. She got her chance when she went to Europe during the Second World War. She photographed children displaced by bomb damage and did pioneering pictures of African American pilots. Frissell also photographed Jackie’s Newport wedding to JFK in 1953. Everyone who went to the Library of Congress remembered the awkwardness of asking Jackie whether they shouldn’t include a picture from her wedding in the book. In the end, Sidney Frissell Stafford remembered Jackie saying, “Of course we have to use one of the wedding pictures from my mother’s house. Let’s use that one.” It wasn’t one of the more glamorous pictures of her. Her choice surprised me. by Barbara Axel

Sidney burst into my life like a big Roman candle, and we exploded with laughter when we met. Although I had seen her briefly at a few Dachshund Club of America

field trials, it wasn’t until I officially met her on that 4th of July weekend in 2006 that I knew we were destined to become fast and furious friends. There she was, wearing the biggest floppy hat I had ever seen in my life, a t-shirt and capris, and with the brightest green crocs on her feet planted firmly in an ex pen outside her RV. She was waving and smiling at me on my approach...like the Madwoman of Chaillot welcoming back an escaped fellow inmate from the asylum. Yes, I, the Mad Hatter had finally met my match with her, the Madwoman of Chaillot. We were both quite mad, both quite deathly afraid of the ordinary. And we both knew it...we both saw it in each other. And we loved it. I came to see her new litter of mini wirehair puppies that I heard were quite good. There were six in the litter, but she showed me only four. The other two, she explained, were spoken for. One already went to a show home, and the other one...well, she was keeping her for herself. As I looked at the puppies, Sidney became very earnest and discerning, explaining in great detail about each of the puppies’ merits and drawbacks. I, on the other hand, had a very specific idea of what I wanted...and I wanted what she wasn’t showing me. After a wonderful conversation, I thanked her, and told her that if she ever wanted to show me either of the other remaining females, I would come to her place in a heartbeat. A month passed and Sidney called me. She explained that the red girl she was keeping seemed to be so talented that she would never have time to keep up with all she thought she would be able to do. Would I like to come and see her? I jumped at the chance. A few days later – on my birthday – I met Carmen at her house. Carmen and I looked at each other and it was love at first sight...or maybe Carmen just loved the frozen rabbit I was holding. Either way, after doing a scent test with Carmen I knew this was the Dual Champion I wanted to build...and Sidney said she would support me all the way. After a month of training, I finished Carmen as a field champion at 61⁄2 months, and Sid then broke me in on how to show in the ring. Sid was patient with me, and soon I was flying around the ring like I actually looked like I knew what I was doing...even at Westminster. But above all, Sidney made it fun. Sidney made everything fun. The two of us had many lively and spirited discussions late into the night in her RV. And they usually ended in laughter...and in planning the next competition and the next adventure. One adventure was our trip to Alaska together. You haven’t really lived until you have gone on a brown bear hunt or driven Iditarod sled dogs in Alaska with Sidney Stafford....these are moments I will never forget. Nor will I forget her happiness each year that Carmen was at the top of the national field champion rankings, and how she sought to capture the elusive perfect photograph of Carmen as well. It has always been a battle to photograph Carmen, but a battle that Sidney had always won. And I remember the next battle Sidney told me about when she explained her diagnosis. I treasure all those conversations, all those, questions, and even all those tears. I treasure the times I read to her, and the times I tucked her into bed. I treasure all those moments where we have helped one another...because, after all, isn’t that what we “dog people” do for one another? Even if we are a little mad. Jack Kerouac said it best: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars, and in the middle you see the blue center light pop and everybody goes, “Awww!” So.... Sidney, you have burned brightly – so brightly – like that fabulous yellow roman candle that pops – and we, your family and friends, look back on your life and lovingly say, “Awww!” I met you on a 4th of July weekend, and every time I see fireworks now, my dear, dear friend, I will think of you lovingly as I gaze across the starry and exploding sky...Good night, bright light. Susan Garrett’s

Crate Games

by Sharon McDonald and Holly Deeds he promotional video for Susan Garrett’s DVD Crate Games refers to it as being “for self-control and motivation.” What dog couldn’t use those attributes, whether it does performance events or not? The following column is a discussion of how we have begun to apply the ideas in this video to our own young dogs – Holly’s 7 month-old Lark and Sharon’s two year-old Gee! – and what success we have had with it. We are not trying to teach you what the video contains – you’ll have to buy the video yourself for that – but rather to say whether we have found the video’s content to be of use in our own training.

Sharon says: While I’ve been aware of Crate Games for several years, it wasn’t until I registered for a Tracy Sklenar agility seminar that I got motivated to learn more about the Crate Games process and benefits. The seminar flyer suggested that “familiarity with Crate Games is highly recommended.” I obtained the DVD and within a brief afternoon, Gee! was working Crate Games like a pro and I was motivated to apply some of the advanced games to my agility training sessions. The beauty of Crate Games is that Susan Garrett leads you through a simple and effective

Holly says: Lark is just learning how to behave at dog classes and shows. While she is well acclimated to her crate at home, where she spends the day so that she can stay safe and out of trouble while I’m at work, she has not had a lot of experience with being in a crate in the exciting surroundings of a dog event. She has shown a tendency to come charging out of the crate the second the door is opened, and on a couple of occasions has gotten past me, running into a ring at an obedience match and toward a class full of largely-untrained dogs at a training class. This could have resulted in her being seriously hurt, so I wanted to find a way of teaching this young and impulsive dog to have some crate manners. Compounding the issue is that all three of my dogs share the same crate at dog events. While the older dogs, Stella and Jenny, understand that the command “Stella only” means that Stella gets to come out of the crate but the others have to stay inside when the door is opened, Lark has no understanding at all of that. My initial interest in using Crate Games sprang from a desire to teach Lark the idea that an open crate door is not an invitation to shoot through it, and to do that in a fun and constructive way rather than just by continually shoving her back into the crate. One of the fundamental exercises of Crate Games teaches the dog to sit down in the BACK of the crate when the door is opened. As soon as the owner’s hand goes to the latch, the dog is to move to the back of the crate and sit down until its leash is snapped on. To do this, you take a cookie and, as you open the crate, put your arm through the door and toward the upper back of the crate with the cookie. This “sit” can be built up over time to happen without the treat. Once the dog is sitting in the back of its crate, you can snap the leash on, but don’t let the dog out of the crate until it is invited. This is just the first step in Crate Games; you can build up from this basic exercise to teach the dog to seek its crate willingly and from a distance, to sit inside a wide-open crate, and more.

operant conditioning process in which your dog will offer responses without any prompting from you, and you will mark the correct responses with yummy treats. Your dog will develop an eager passion for work that will transcend beyond the actual process of Crate Games. To begin, I watched the entire DVD and took notes so that I understood the process. Then I replayed the DVD and paused it to work through each step. I was able to work through the first three important stages within about 1 to 1.5 hours. In the short process, Gee! learned to sit when my hand touches the latch of her crate and to remain sitting in the crate while I attached her leash to her collar. She would remain sitting, even with the crate door fully open, until I gave her a release word. She also learned to go back into her crate by playing the “Yer in Yer Out” game. Once I started, I was eager to continue and advance. I applied the principles while at agility and obedience class, when getting in/out of the crate in the car, and even routinely when getting in/out of the crate at home. I was able to build distance away from the crate and lengthen time with door open, as well as build resistance to tempting distractions. All the while Gee! maintained a sit in the crate like a champ. I credit Crate Games with resolving Gee!‘s agility start line stay problem. In great anticipation of the release and running an agility course, Gee! could not contain her energy at the start line. While she never broke the plane of the first jump, she WOULD stand up, shake, and then either creep forward or just remain standing. Sometimes if she sat back down, it would be out of position (not facing the jump, for example). This was frustrating and

was bound to become compounded if not nipped swiftly. So… I experimented with Crate Games. I placed Gee! in her crate, door wide open, and the crate in front of a jump just as she would appear at the start of an agility course. I led out varying distances and would release her from the crate. WOW! Not only would she stay in the crate until released, but she would release with an astounding burst of energy! Gee! understood not to release from the sit in the crate until told to do so … so the “stay” easily transferred when the crate was placed in front of a jump. Since starting this process and using the tools in this manner, Gee!’s start line has improved dramatically. In an actual trial setting, I have led out 3 jumps and she has remained planted in place until released. It’s awesome! I did indeed attend that Tracy Sklenar seminar and learned yet another application of Crate Games into my preagility warm up. Like most dogs, Gee! is crated until just before her agility run. My goal is to get her out of the crate no more than about five minutes prior to her agility run. My new pre-run ritual starts at the crate. I get loaded with cookies and toys while Gee! is still in the crate so that when I release her, I am ready to give her my full and undivided attention. As I open the crate door, she is sitting and remains sitting while I loop her leash around her neck (though admittedly her lower lip is often quivering … that energy has to go somewhere!). With leash on and crate door open, I drop her favorite raccoon tail tug toy on the ground and make it jump around. I say “are you r-e-a-d-y?” Now we add some whining to the quivering lip! “R-e-a-d-y?” … “Okay—Get it!” Look out all bystanders, the Gee! is loose! She erupts from her crate and pounces on the raccoon tail while I hold and tug from the other end. I ask her to give, ask for a sit, then reward the sit with more tugging. Then I ask for a down or maybe a spin or a twist or a low-five. Whatever trick comes to mind. I get a few behaviors and reward with tug of the raccoon tail. Gee! has my full attention and, by the process, I have hers! I keep her attention from the crate all the way to the start line. Crate Games has not only improved Gee!’s impulse control within the bounds of a crate, it has added drive and motivation for her toy and to work with me. It’s been a tool/process that I wish I had given more attention to with my prior dogs. I highly endorse Crate Games. Susan Garrett’s delivery of instruction is clear and simple. The process is suitable for all training skill levels. Whether it’s to build manners within the crate or to improve your dogs’ drive and motivation, Crate Games has lessons that adapt to fit your needs. !

Sam was much more than a nationally ranked dog over multiple years. His infectious personality made him one of the best ambassadors for the breed. We were blessed to be part of his life. He always seemed to sense when we needed some extra love or attention, providing a snuggle and a gentle lick. rom the time he was born, Harper was my boy. I adored the work ethic of his father, Wrinkles, and was hopeful the match with Robbie Loyd’s bitch, Sweetie, would produce a good looking dog with drive. Thank you Robbie, for loaning grandpa Dealer (sire of Harper’s sire) and dam, Sweetie, to me! The breeding, which produced 2 pups, worked as hoped and both Harper, and his brother Maru, are Dual Champions with fantastic work ethics. I started clicker training this litter while they were weaning using a double click (I know it is not the standard usage!) when food went down. The connection was made and this started the wonderful journey with Harper and clicker training. He is a master of tricks and I sometimes run out of ways to entertain him with new ones! He runs to get on his skateboard, pose with/on a myriad of toys, wave, etc. He learned if one behavior doesn’t earn a click then obviously I want something else. As a result a drop on recall will sometimes garner a drop and roll, a front will get me a front and a wave, and possibly a spin. Patience is not something he has with me! Harper always entered the conformation ring with that ‘look at me’ attitude and earned his breed championship when he was just 12.5 months old. Since I’m not fond of being in conformation, he only garnered the one Group placement on the weekend he finished. Then we moved on to compete in other venues. We started in agility competition as soon as he was of age. As is evident in the weave picture, he LOVED his weaves and drove through them like a maniac! Three years ago, while he was finishing his last agility title, we started Rally Obedience training. What fun! One of the reasons I had avoided obedience with him was the need for silence; for us my talking works. Rally O was perfect as the handler is REQUIRED to talk. He LOVES rally and it was another venue for him to be a “performer” sometimes entertaining the audience just a tad too much with his “extra” behaviors. In 2007 I knew that DFWDC was slated to host DCA 2008. This was my impetus to start tracking with Harper. I had one year to get him ready, and he never let me down taking to it like he had everything else. He was certified Christmas 2007 and earned his TD at DCA on January 22, 2008. That boy drug me along his entire track, never faltering except at the start, when, after he approached the start article he spent what seemed like days wanting to hunt in the trees directly BEHIND us! After several requests, and a stern command to find it, he finally took off giving his full attention to finding another article. I was a very happy wreck of a handler when he turned around to face me and sat on his glove. From the time he was a baby we had gone to the local field trials. He did really well until we joined the ONAF club (only need a first). We stayed there for a long time - a really long time! I had hoped the tracking would help his field work, but it didn’t play out that way as it seemed to encourage his fondness for hunting flowers at trials. On December 5, 2009 he finally garnered that 1st. Guess there were no flowers around in December! I hadn’t given much thought to qualifying in all events due to a very bad habit my dogs developed once I earned the right to judge Earthdog. The dogs that lived with me conspired and not one ever went down a tunnel at tests…practice yes, test no. I had never even thought about putting Harper in a tunnel. Then at a practice workshop in October 2009, he was indicating that he was bored in the car so I decided to give him a shot at the Intro tunnel. He loved it and moved to the Junior tunnel easily. Much to my surprise his practice success carried over to an actual test and he garnered his first JE leg later that same month and then in February, 2010 secured the second leg to finish his JE title. So, the quandary now was….Obedience? Of course HE can, not so sure about me! Regardless of how his mother TRIED to make him bust, Harper earned his CD in 3 straight tries in October, 2010!! Such a fantastic dog! He is pictured is earning his 3rd leg! The next weekend we had Earthdog practice in preparation for our club’s tests. Unfortunately for us, Harper injured himself in the tunnel and 3 weeks later had back surgery. That is a long story in itself but again, Harper outdid himself. It was a major herniation and he was given the prognosis of 80% recovery due to the damage to the spinal cord. In only thirty-six hours after surgery he came home - walking. During his rehab visit three weeks later the Doctors and staff were amazed and sent us home with an exercise program to do on our own as he had progressed past the point of needing them. Six weeks later he was out doing baby tracks. I could not love this dog more. He always tries to please. He may not always do things in the manner I would like, but he always tries! Currently Harper is training for his CDX and TDX, loving every minute of it, and still offering up more behaviors than needed. “Harper” is owned, trained and loved Cindi Todd

Lance’s Trip to a VC Lance completed the requirements: Field, Conformation, Obedience, Agility and Good Citizenship, for his Versatility Certificate on June 27, 2010; by earning his CDX. Lance is basically a shy dog, so the trip was not easy. His shyness somehow vanishes in the Field where he becomes crazed. He has two Absolute wins to date. Lance is now on the road to his UD and then perhaps a tracking title.

HEMANGIOSARCOMA STUDY The Van Andel Research Institute, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is pleased to share that we have received a “Grand Opportunities” (GO grant) from the National Institutes of Health. The first and most important program is the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC), which is headed by Drs. Jeff Trent (TGen), Nick Duesbery (Van Andel Research Institute), and Paul Meltzer (National Cancer Institute/NIH). Samples from canine patients will not only allow the researchers to identify genes responsible for breed-specific susceptibilities, but also to translate these discoveries into new and more precise diagnostics and therapeutics for both canine and human cancer patients. The CHCC has been developed to investigate five initial cancers in dogs, which also affect people. The first five cancers we’ll be researching are: Hemangiosarcoma, Osteosarcoma, Lymphoma, Malignant histiocytosis, Melanoma (oral and digital) In order to move forward, we need your help. The Institute will be studying only naturally occurring tumors, so we need the assistance of owners with dogs who develop any of the above

types of cancer. We are requesting fresh (NOT in formalin) tumor samples when the dog has surgery, a biopsy or is euthanized. We also need 3 mls of blood in an EDTA (purple top) tube. If a tumor sample is not immediately available, (a dog who has had surgery, for example), a blood sample is still useful. If your dog is scheduled for surgery, please contact VARI ahead of time so we can FedEx a tumor collection kit to your veterinarian. You can contact the CHCC at 616.234.5569. You may also email Dr. Froman at roe.froman@vai.org. Consent forms and more information for veterinarians can be accessed and downloaded from our website, www.vai.org/helpingdogs. In addition, we are collecting DNA samples from a wide variety of healthy, purebred dogs, for use as controls. Your help is greatly appreciated. Breen Labs will collaborate to share its samples with all three research laboratories that are studying different aspects of the disease so materials sent will go a long way. Delegate’s Report March 8, 2011 Held in Newark, NJ by Larry Sorenson This Delegates’ meeting was the annual election of the DCA Board members. Complete Delegates’ Meeting Minutes are located at: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/about/delegates_meeti ng/march11.pdf (Comments by Mr. Sorenson are in italic.) Points of interest from the Delegates’ Meeting James Stevens, CFO, gave the financial report. A summary follows: Total annual revenues for 2010 of $56.3 million were 7% below the prior year. 2010’s total operating expenses of $56.7 million were 2% less than 2009. This resulted in an operating deficit of $413,000 for last year. Our investments generated a gain of $6.5 million or 10% in 2010. Income is still falling faster than expenses. AKC needs to do something about the financial situation. Investments are doing well. The Chair called on the Chair of the Tellers Committee, Kim Johnson, of KPMG to read results of the ballot for the class of 2015. Ms. Johnson’s report follows: The total number of ballots cast was 391; therefore, the majority to elect was 196. The results of the ballots were as follows; Robert Amen, 191; Dr. Carmen Battaglia, 183; Karen Burgess, 93; Steven Gladstone, 192; Kenneth Marden, 137; John Ronald, 150; Daniel Smyth, 104. As no candidate received a majority vote, another ballot was cast for the Class. No one was elected on the first ballot. The first vote was on the proposed amendments to Chapter 10 and Chapter 15, Section 1, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Duties and Responsibilities of Show Veterinarians, and Protests Against Dogs. The amendments were brought forward by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee. This would, in Chapter 10, update the requirements for show veterinarians to better accommodate on-call veterinarians and require clubs to inform

them of their duties. In Chapter 15, this amendment would include the Event Committee in the process of removing dogs from the show, and eliminate the requirement for a form, and to assign the fiscal responsibility for veterinary expenses. The Board recommended its approval. By recommendation of the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee, the proposal was further amended without objection. ... “of the event” was struck and “where treatment is provided” was inserted. There were two-thirds in the affirmative and the amendment was adopted. The next vote was on the proposed amendment to Chapter 2, Section 4, of Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Making Application to Hold a Dog Show. The proposed amendment was brought forward by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee. This amendment would create a common deadline for the application and judges’ panel in an effort to reduce confusion by clubs. There were two-thirds in the affirmative and the amendment was adopted. The amendment to Article VI, Section 5, new paragraph, of the Charter and Bylaws of the American Kennel Club, which was to have been read at the meeting, is going back to the Board for modification. The Chair calls on Executive Secretary to read the proposed amendment to Article VII, Section 1 of the Charter and Bylaws of The American Kennel Club. Mr. Crowley read the proposed amendment is to Article VII, Section 1, of the Charter and Bylaws of the American Kennel Club. The amendment would make AKC Board members who have served two consecutive terms ineligible for re-election for the length of one four-year term. This amendment was brought forward by the Greater Collin Kennel Club. The AKC Board of Directors has made no recommendation. It will be published in two issues of the AKC Gazette and you will be asked to vote on it at the June 2011 meeting. These items were more of the house keeping that need to be voted on. However, the part in bold is very important and needs to be talked about at the next DCA board meeting. William H. The Chair recognized Patricia Laurans, Delegate for the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, who spoke as follows: As you all know, when you read Ron’s Chairman’s report from the last meeting, we have a process that is now available as an application for iPhones and it can be used by the fancy and it can also be used by judges for judges’ education along with their standards. On the table next to where you registered this morning are stacks of paper. Your breed and the photos for your breed that are being used currently are there. You are welcome to take a copy of your breed, let your Parent Club see it. It may be what you want to stay on there, but if you have other desires, please contact Daphna Straus. Her e-mail is DXS@AKC.org. It will require that any photos that are used become copyrighted by AKC, I believe Dennis. Is that correct? Mr. Sprung: Copyrighted or the person who gives it to us has the rights to transfer. Ms. Laurans: So I think it’s important. And you’ll notice some breeds have three pictures, some breeds have one and there are a couple of breeds that have none. So I would suggest that you look at those photos and take a copy of your breed home with you. Thank you. The DCA Board will need to select and approve 3 pictures to be placed on this cell phone app. They do NOT want show photos. The Chair thanked Ms. Laurans then recognized: Lee Arnold, Delegate for the Southern Colorado Kennel Club, who spoke as follows: Mr. President, fellow Delegates, I’d like to update you on some exciting news from the AKC Canine Health Foundation. We’d like you to know about a new way that you can help support the foundation. We used to say open up your hearts and wallets, and today I’d like to ask you to open up your cell phones to help us. It’s simple, it’s quick, and it’s quite easy. Get your pens and pencils out and jot down this number to dial: 20222. You will then be asked to text DOG, if you would like to donate to the Canine Health Foundation. You will then be asked to donate $5.00. Please punch yes, and you’ll help all our dogs live longer and healthier lives. On another note, there’s more exciting news.

For those of you who are in the Metropolitan area, right until the end of April, the AKC Canine Health Foundation is running a PSA/commercial on the Jumbotron in Times Square. Every three to four hours we have impressions of getting everybody in the world to know what we’re about, what we do, supporting canine health. We are the leading organization in the world and the only organization that so far has given over $23 million to make sure that our dogs live longer, healthier lives. I thank you all for your past support. I hope you’ll continue to donate and help us in the future. And with that, as we say in radio, my time is up and I thank you for yours. If you have a desire to donate to CHF this is one way to do it. The Chair recognized William Ellis, Delegate for the Plum Creek Kennel Club of Colorado who spoke as follows: I would like to urge the Board, to quickly as you can, study the moratorium you have imposed and if possible, lift parts of it geographically. I’m in the west, in Colorado. We do not have an overabundance of clubs that are putting on shows, weekend after weekend. We have two clubs, the Mile High Sporting Dog Fanciers, and the Rocky Mountain Mastiff Fanciers who are ready to get going. And as an all-breed club, the Plum Creek Kennel Club is looking forward to working with these specialty clubs, and so I would urge your quickest study and resolution to that moratorium. Thank you. Mr. Sprung: While I don’t speak for the Board, I can assure you that they are going to study this. It is a complex question. We realize that from state-to-state, from territory-toterritory it is different, but the reason to start the discussion on the moratorium was partly to look at all issues involved and to receive feedback from the constituency, whether specialties, group clubs, or all-breed shows. So your concerns certainly will be thoroughly addressed. The moratorium on new dog shows was not well thought out. I feel certain it will not last long. Wisconsin Breeder/Rescue Licensing Takes Effect June 1 The Wisconsin Dog Breeders and Sellers Law takes effect on June 1, 2011, by which time all breeders, rescues and facilities that fall under the law must be licensed. Licenses are required for: “Dog breeding facilities” from which at least 25 dogs/year are sold, from more than three litters “In-state dog dealers” selling at least 25 dogs/year that they did not breed or raise “Out-of-state dog dealers” who import at least 25 dogs/year into Wisconsin (this includes dogs that they have bred and raised) – this includes out-of-state rescues that place dogs in the state Non-profit animal shelters and rescues that shelter/foster at least 25 dogs/year Animal control facilities that contract with a local municipality Read more about the new law, review the regulations, and download the application materials on the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection (DATCP)’s web site, or contact DATCP at (608) 224-4889. Missouri Eliminates Ownership Limits in New Breeder Regulations Missouri Governor Nixon signed Senate Bill 161 on April 27, 2011. This new law, effective immediately, eliminates a 50-dog ownership limit and makes several other positive changes to the Proposition B provisions passed in November 2010. The AKC congratulates the Missouri Federation of Animal Owners and the numerous responsible breeders in Missouri who worked tirelessly to ensure the protection of the health and welfare of dogs and the rights of responsible breeders. Summary: Senate Bill 161, like Proposition B, covers anyone who owns or has custody of ten or more intact female dogs over the age of six months for the purpose of breeding the dogs and selling offspring. Changes included in SB 161 include: Removing the 50-dog limit Creating the crime of “canine cruelty” for those who repeatedly violate the state’s animal welfare laws and pose a substantial risk to the health and welfare of animals Amending the definition of “sufficient housing” to remove arbitrary temperature provisions and instead require a sanitary facility, a solid surface for the dog to lie “in a recumbent position”, proper ventilation, and other provisions Establishing a Class A misdemeanor for anyone who stacks cages without an impervious barrier between each level The new law also establishes new requirements for kennel construction: For all kennels constructed prior to April 15, 2011, the space must be two times the size currently allowed in Missouri Department of Agriculture regulations. All newly-constructed kennels must be three times the size currently permitted. By January 1, 2016, all kennels must meet the newly-constructed kennel standards. Provide constant and unfettered access to an attached outdoor run. No wire flooring is permitted, and all enclosures must meet the flooring standards set by rule by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Letters to and from the editor Hi Members and Subscribers! It was great seeing so many of you at Nationals in May. I wish I would have had time to talk to everyone. Congratulations to all the winners! Personally, I thought it was a wonderful representation of our breed - in all coats! Thank you to all the Badger Dachshund Club members who helped with the performance events - they did an exceptional job. And we all owe the DCA board a big thank you for putting the Nationals on this year - it was a lot of work, and it was very well done. The next newsletter (Autumn) will be the “Nationals” issue. Deadline is July 15th. Time to send in your ads!! More congratulations to Cindi Todd and Harper on accomplishing their amazing achievement - 7 individual AKC titles! Any DCA member’s dachshund receiving 7 AKC titles in each different eligible venue is entitled to a newsletter cover as well as an article and pictures. That also applies to any DCA member’s dachshund that becomes a triple AKC champion. On that same note - any dachshund who receives a Versatility Certificate from DCA receives a FREE page of black/white advertising. If you want, it can be upgraded to color for $75. Members have 18 months from the time of receiving the award to send me an ad. Hope all of you have a great summer filled with lots of “doggy” activities!
