Giving AI Your Best Shot. . . . . . . . .
Over 1001 nights ago I had the privilege and blessing of bringing this wonderful girl, “Zod”, home with me to Virginia. The sadness and the tears of that April day are still very real to me. I had lost my very dearest, best friend and now I was to carry on with her “heart dog”. One of the early instructions that Sid gave me was NOT to strip “Zod” anymore now that she was a Champion, because she hated it and “it made her cry”. I have since come to find that there is a certifiable element

One of my passions is to do different activities with my dogs. At this point I have done tracking, agility, obedience, rally, conformation, earth dogging, and field trialing. I had never thought that I would ever get to sled with my dogs! What a dream come true. How fun… After we fit the dogs for their harnesses, hooking up turned out to be an adventure in itself. My friend’s dog Trask was so excited to see dogs he knew from our obedience classes, he wrapped his mom Koyuk and himself around the tree that their sled was anchored to.

Natural hunting with dogs may be divided into two basic forms. Hunting for food, whether feathered or furred, can be done with a single dog or maybe two. It should be sustainable as food is a continuing necessity. Nuisance removal, on the other hand, aims at the elimination of the problem animal. The only judge is the landowner who wants his or her property cleared. Using dogs of varying sizes and even breeds increases one’s chance of success. The point is to accomplish the task with the least expenditure of energy.

Hi Members and Subscribers, Congratulations to all the winners at the most recent DCA Nationals in Pennsylvania, sounds like it was a great time! DCA 2017 will come up faster than we think! Don’t forget the Autumn issue is the Nationals issue that shows all the results and the wins from DCA 2016. The Deadline is July 15th for those who wish to advertise. Thank you again for to those members who advertise, and a huge thank you to all who contribute articles for the newsletter. The club really appreciates the time and talent that you give to the members. The update on the hemangiosarcoma research from Barbara Axel on page 51 is extremely informative. There has been more anti-breeder sentiments throughout the country again. Please, please, be aware of what is happening in your local government and fight for the right to own and breed our wonderful dogs. All relevant impending laws are listed on the AKC website: http://www.akc.org/governmentrelations/legislative-alerts/ Congratulations to Connie Fisher and Zod on all their wonderful achievements! Zod is the latest addition to that very exclusive club for dachsies that achieve 7 AKC titles in different venues. All of us should be proud we own such a versatile breed. Thank you Andra O’Connell for the cover picture of this special little dog. Hope to see lots of ads for the Autumn issue!

A Personal Journey with LaFora by Dianne Graham
I was introduced to LaFora Disease, a disease in miniature wirehairs, beagles, and bassets, by Sharon Ehr during the Miniature Dachshund Nationals in September of 2014. She had a laptop at ringside and showed a video of a mini wire dog affected with this disease. I knew nothing about it and forgot for awhile. In 2015, I started doing research on LaFora, using www.dachshundhealth.org.uk as my base. Clicking on the LaFora tab, I was able to view the published list of mini wires in the UK that have tested as affecteds, carriers, and clears. For me, this test was an eye opener. LaFora is pretty widespread in the UK, with about 45% of the dogs tested as carriers, and another 11% tested as affecteds. I noticed one dog, Drakesleat Ris Otto, who was listed as the sire of 2 dogs that were carriers. He was also listed as the sire of an affected dog. I had bred to a dog with this dog as his grandsire! Could I have this gene in my miniature wirehair line? Some background on LaFora in dogs. It is caused by a recessive gene, so the dogs have to have 2 copies of this gene to have LaFora. The LaFora cells in the brain have glucose chains within them that begin to get really long, so long they don’t dissolve. The LaFora cells then become so large that they start destroying normal brain cells in the cortex. Symptoms start around age 6 or 7. According to Dr. Claire Rusbridge (video on the site from Jan. 2016), early symptons include jerks/jitters (Mycocionus- thus this disease is a type of epilepsy) caused from lights, sudden movement or from sudden noise and also may include seizures. Later the dog has panic attacks. These are from visual hallucinations and if the dog is loose, it will bolt and run for miles or scream and be very hard to calm down. Still later the dog gets dementia, may become blind, deaf, has difficulty walking (stiff gait), and is incontinent, all this while the jerking continues. Dr. Rusbridge showed an M.R.I of an old dog. There
were hardly any brain cells left in the cortex. There is no cure. The dogs die around age 13. Sadly, LaFora Disease is in people, too. They get symptoms around age 14 and die in their early 20’s in a non-responsive state with continuous jerking. As a result of this information, in January, my friend and co-wire breeder, Kim Ragsdale and I had the 2 girls we had kept from the breeding, Ch. Jonsu Diagram Rags Diva MW and Rags Diagram Corriana MW tested. Drakesleat Ris Otto was their great grandfather, Champion Drakesleat Spaghetti Junction their grandfather, and Ch. Friedox Falling for You their father. The test results came back in mid April. Both girls
Genetic Inheritance of LaFora Disease in Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds
are carriers for this disease and that means those three dogs in their pedigree are carriers, also. As in other recessive diseases, a dog must have both genes for it in order to be affected. Our girls will be fine and will live healthy lives but they are carriers and we must be cognizant of that fact. I urge mini wire breeders who have English dogs or other foreign dogs in their pedigrees to go to the site and check their dog’s
Overview Lafora disease is an inherited late onset progressive myoclonic epilepsy. Myoclonus (jerking) is a feature of the disease which characteristically can be induced by flashing lights), sudden sounds and movement especially that close to the dog’s head. Generalized or complex partial seizures may be seen in some dogs. The disease progresses slowly over many years and gradually other neurological deficits such as ataxia, blindness and dementia occur.
Signalment Lafora disease can occur spontaneously in any breed, however, the Miniature Wire Haired Dachshund, Bassett Hound and Beagle are predisposed. Age of onset is after 5 years and both sexes can be affected.
6
Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016
ancestors to see if any have been tested or to contact the kennel and ask. Remember, we need to check more than a 3 or 4 generation pedigree! As this test has only been around for a few years, you might look at sires/dams of dogs that have been tested as we did, to see if they are in your dogs’s pedigrees. Also, it is imperative that folks do not cross dogs from these lines unless your dog/dogs have tested clear or only one of the dogs is a carrier! Otherwise, you might be producing LaFora affecteds! This is an unfortunate genetic problem. No one planned this and no one should be blamed! Kim and I have sent tests off on Diva’s children and now are waiting for the results. The Lafora test is a blood test as of now and is very accurate. This is what you need to do to have your dog/dogs tested: Step one: go to www.sickkidsfoundation.com, click on the pink tab at the right side, “Make a Donation”, Click on “make a one time donation and give $350 per dog that you are testing.” This is Canadian dollars which is around $250 American (note I use a Capitol One credit card because they do not charge a fee to change American dollars to to other currencies). Fill out your details and finally, in the comments section type: PLEASE ASSIGN MY GIFT TO Dr. Minassian, Lafora Disease Research. Step two: have a blood sample taken by your vet with certified akc#/microchip or tattoo on 5 mls blood from each animal, placed in an EDTA tube. Include a copy of your dog’s pedigree and chip/tattoo information. Step three: send the sample vial FEDEX (note, Kim called and got the research team’s fedex number so we sent the last samples free) to: Dr. Berge Minassian The Hospital for Sick Children Genetics and Genome Biology 686 Bay St. Rm 14-9420 Toronto Ontario M5G 0A4
I would like to start a data base of North American dogs that have been tested. If you would send your information to me at diagramdachshunds@gmail.com, I will include your dogs in the data base. If we all pull together and are honest with each other, we can tackle this problem in our wonderful mini wires before it gets out of hand.
The Beagle has a more severe version of the disease and the associated epilepsy can be drug resistant.
Signs A characteristic of the disease is myoclonus, typified by rapid shuddering/jerking the head backwards. The myoclonus occurs spontaneously and in response to noise, flickering light (including television), and sudden movement in the visual field. Hypnic (sleep related) myoclonus may also occur. Some dogs also develop epilepsy (generalized tonic clonic seizures and complex partial seizures). The complex seizures are often characterized by high pitched vocalizations and behavior as if the dog is panicking. continued on page 14...

The New OFA-ACVIM Advanced Cardiac Database Over the past year, the OFA has been working with a steering committee established by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) to make improvements to the OFA’s existing Congenital Cardiac Database. The primary purposes of the enhancements are to 1) develop an appropriate screening protocol for adult onset cardiac diseases, and 2) begin collecting better data on cardiac disease prevalence and progression in the purebred dog. The OFA’s existing cardiac database only provides clearances for congenital cardiac disease, with a minimum exam age of 12 months, and where exams can be performed by general practitioners, specialists or boarded veterinary cardiologists (ACVIM/Cardiology

Diplomates). Since many canine cardiac diseases develop after 12 months age, the current congenital cardiac database does NOT clear dogs for these adult onset diseases. Since the OFA Cardiac application forms are used primarily by breeders and owners to clear their dogs for congenital cardiac disease, very few applications with abnormal exam results are ever submitted As a result, the congenital cardiac database statistics are almost completely skewed towards normal dogs, and in no way represent an accurate incidence of cardiac disease in dogs. There will be a transition period (length to be determined) where the current OFA Congenital Cardiac Database will continue to be available with no changes to the forms, submission procedures or exam protocols. However, effective April 1, 2016, we will be offering the Advanced Cardiac Database (ACA), which will become the new standard for cardiac exams and will eventually replace the existing Congenital Cardiac Database. Please note, exams for the new Advanced Cardiac Database are limited to boarded veterinary cardiologists with Diplomate status in either the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine/Cardiology subspecialty) or the ECVIM (European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine/Cardiology subspecialty). General practitioners and other
specialists may not perform Advanced Cardiac Database exams. Modeled after the OFA’s eye screening program, the new ACA exam form is a triplicate form, and is therefore not available as a .pdf download from the OFA website. All the participating cardiologists have been sent forms, and ACA forms will be available at the time of the exam. Regardless of whether or not the owner submits their copy of the form to the OFA for official certification, the examining cardiologist will submit one copy of the form to the OFA. The results contained on the cardiologist-submitted copy will remain confidential. No official OFA clearances will be issued from this copy. The cardiologist-submitted copy will only be used to record results at an aggregate level to begin collecting better cardiac disease prevalence and progression data by breed in the purebred dog, one of the major purposes of the enhancements. Should an echocardiogram be warranted as a result of the basic auscultation, the echo section of the new form is also far more detailed so that better statistics regarding flow rates, velocities, etc., can be collected. From an owner perspective, there is NO CHANGE once receiving the completed signed form following the exam. For official OFA certification, owners should submit continued on page 14...

Lafora Disease continued from page 6
Causes and risk factors Lafora’s disease is caused by a mutation in the EPM2B (NHLRC1) a gene which encodes malin E3 ubiquitin ligase, a protein involved with carbohydrate metabolism. Early data suggests that these proteins safeguard neurons against accumulating too many carbohydrates. A characteristic feature of the disease is accumulation of toxic starch-like material (polyglucosan) within cells, particularly nervous, hepatic and muscle tissue. Lafora disease has an autosomal recessive inheritance i.e. both the sire and the dam will either carry (i.e. have no signs of the disease and have one copy of the abnormal gene) or have the disease.
Diagnosis In the miniature wire-haired Dachshund and Basset Hound the disease causing genetic mutation has been identified. The new blood test as of now (see page 6 on methods of testing) is very accurate. The disease may be also be diagnosed by identification of the Lafora bodies in a liver, muscle or nerve biopsy.

disease.” “This dog has been found to be free of adult onset cardiac disease,” or, “This dog has been found to be free of congenital and adult onset cardiac disease.” The clearance type will also be indicated on the OFA website. The minimum age for either clearance type is 12 months. While the congenital clearance remains valid for the life of the dog, owners should be aware that the adult onset clearance will only remain valid for one year from the time of the exam. If owners wish for the adult onset clearance to remain current, repeat exams will be necessary. This is the only way to address cardiac diseases which can develop throughout the life of the dog. The one year validity period and subsequent expiration for adult onset clearances is viewed as a critical component by the ACVIM/Cardiology group in order to even consider diagnosing dogs as normal when many cardiac diseases of concern to breeders can develop at any time in the dog’s life. The ACVIM/Cardiology group has also determined that because of the specific cardiomyopathy concerns in the Boxer and Doberman Pinscher breeds, an adult onset clearance for these two breeds will ALSO REQUIRE a Holter test to be performed within 90 days of the regular cardiac exam. The examining cardiologists will also have Holter exam forms available. Interpretation of the Holter test is limited to boarded veterinary cardiologists with Diplomate status in either the ACVIM or the ECVIM. !

idiopathic epilepsy. Haematology and biochemistry should be performed to rule out reactive causes of epileptic seizures. Treatment Anecdotally Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds with early Lafora’s disease respond to a proprietary antioxidant rich diet (Hills b/d ™). Hills b/d ™ has been shown to protect nerve cells against oxidative damage however this may not be the mechanism by which it is effective for Lafora disease as the same beneficial effect is not seen if the dog is maintained on the existing diet and supplemented with anti-oxidants. It is possible that Hills b/d ™ is effective because it has a low glycemic index. Starchy/sugary treats may aggravate the condition and should be avoided. Other diets with a low glycemic index may be effective. continued on page 23...

DC Scoshire Scherizade O’Siddachs, CD RN NAJ OAP OJP ME EE CA CGC by Connie Fisher
Against her father’s wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to spend one night with the king. Once in the king’s chambers, Scheherazade asked if she might bid one last farewell to her beloved sister, Dunyazade, who had secretly been prepared to ask Scheherazade to tell a story during the long night. The king lay awake and listened with awe as Scheherazade told her first story. The night passed by, and Scheherazade stopped in the middle of the story. The king asked her to finish, but Scheherazade said there was no time, as dawn was breaking. So, the king spared her life for one day to finish the story the next night. The next night, Scheherazade finished the story and then began a second, even more exciting tale, which she again stopped halfway through at dawn. Again, the king spared her life for one more day so she could finish the second story. And so the King kept Scheherazade alive day by day, as he eagerly anticipated the finishing of the previous night’s story. At the end of 1,001 nights, and 1,000 stories, Scheherazade told the king that she had no more tales to tell him. During these 1,001 nights, the king had fallen in love with Scheherazade. He spared her life, and made her his queen. 18

I never asked Sidney exactly how “Zod” came about her name, but I knew that musical operas, composers, etc. were always a part of her naming protocol. I only know that over 1001 nights ago I had the privilege and blessing of bringing this wonderful girl, “Zod”, home with me to Virginia. I have since come to find that there is a certifiable element of “diva” in “Zod”! When she came to Virginia, “Zod” was already a Dual Champion. She received her conformation title at the 10/20/2009 Dachshund Club of New Jersey Specialty earning a 5 point major by going BOW. In May of 2010 she had completed her FC title by earning 3 placements (including the required first) and 55.5 points. I can still hear Sidney tell me that the first thing I had to do with “Zod” now was to get her CD, as she had begun obedience training with her. I offered to do Rally, but NO, it had to be the CD. Sid shared with me a few of the obedience commands she was beginning to do with “Zod”, but “Zod” and I had a long way to go before I was confident that we could even enter a trial. So as the story goes, we set out to get her CD and flew to Wisconsin later that spring to DCA 2011 where, despite my not having been in the obedience ring for a very long time, “Zod” got the first leg towards her CD! Between DCA 2011 and 2012, “Zod” and I continued to work on building our relationship, keeping each other “up” and helping each other deal with our grief. I also got “Zod’s” CGC and her certification as a Therapy Dog. I knew that would be something that Sid would be pleased for her to do. The story continues as we then attempted to participate in the
Triathlon at the 2012 DCA. She received an NBQ at the DCA field trial, completed her JE at the DCA Earth Dog Test, and Qualified in Novice B Obedience. So, as perhaps fate, luck, and some “heavenly intervention” would have it, “Zod” became the Triathlon Dog for DCA 2012...much to my total shock!! But the story goes on, as all Scheherazade stories did, and we tried to repeat her triathlon run in Missouri at the 2013 DCA National. “Zod” was successful in her Senior Earth Dog Test and in Rally, but she failed to qualify in Agility…we clearly needed to have better team work in that area. Sidney didn’t particularly want “Zod” to do anything other than JWW, but “Zod” had different ideas and as the weeks went by and classes progressed at the Blue Ridge Dog Training facility where we were training, she voluntarily “decided” that she loved the teeter and the dog walk. With the guidance of several instructors there, we developed our skill set and became more in tune to each other, capitalizing on her “prey drive” and desire to not let me out of her sight! Her first agility title was in JWW Preferred and her NAP quickly followed. I had been working her at the 8˝ height in
class and decided to try her at that level before moving on to Open, but the broad jump proved to be her nemesis so she only completed a NAJ title. We moved onto Open in November 2014 and she earned those titles in one long weekend with all First Placements and scores of 92, 92, 93, 94, 95, and 100. Meanwhile, we continued to do Field Trials and Earth Dog tests. “Zod” was getting more comfortable with ranging out away from me in the field and by 04/05/2014 had scored a First Place win in the field champion bitch stake. Last October in a combined field champion stake she had probably the “run of her life” and was called back high with top ranked dogs behind her. At one point on her initial rabbit, she was “on it” a very long distance and I kept seeing Carrie Hamilton following her to what seemed like the farthest corner of the field. When Carrie called for us to pick the dogs up, “Zod” was still in hot pursuit
and when we finally got her up, I freaked out because she was covered in blood. I thought she was really badly injured. It turned out to be a briar cut on the ear which we found when we washed her up. With bandaged ear she continued the ensuing series and ended up in 2nd place. I was just thrilled that she was back in my arms and not seriously hurt!! She also really loves rats and it wasn’t very long
before she progressed and completed her Master Earth Dog title in four straight attempts. The next goal was to get her EE, not an easy feat, as anyone doing earth dog will agree. They may have a wonderful master run and then “blow” the senior recall or have a great senior run and then have a problem in master. But “Zod” did well and got her EE without too many missed double “Q’s”.
A somewhat silent worker, she chews viciously on the bars and has been known to require new bars after she has bloodied and destroyed them!! Once again in 2015 I decided to try for the triathlon at DCA. This time we were going to see if I could get her certified in tracking and then take on that, the field, earth dog, agility and rally events. There was one minor hitch
to all of this and that was to get her certified in time. Lining up a judge and dealing with the winter weather of 2015 posed some challenges. Then there was the fact that “Zod” was due to come in season and I also wanted to try one more time to see if we could get her bred. We had been unsuccessful on previous attempts, but Lisa Kennel was so very kind in making “Morgan” (Ch. continued on next page... Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016

Gleneagle’s Almost Famous MW) available to us and I began working with a repro specialist at my vet clinic, Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates. Timing was not the best and a large snowstorm prevented us from laying a track AND doing the breeding. The weather broke and we were to meet the judge at the Manassas Battlefield where she would lay track. The good news was that it had stopped snowing, but the bad news was that it left a 6˝ crusty surface and it was the last day to breed “Zod” based on her progesterone reading. We set out for Manassas with “Zod” and “Morgan” in tow. “Zod” started out well on the track, but was having difficulty with each step as she sank into the 6˝ crust, tiring her out to the point that she decided venturing off under the trees in the woods when there was very little snow was much more desirable. Getting her certified would need to wait for another day. Now we needed to focus on meeting the vet for her breeding. We knew she was “tight”
and may need to have a surgical insemination, but my very skilled and trusted vet said “if there is blood, there is a hole, and I can get her bred”!! Without much fanfare, she was inseminated and now we just needed to see if we would be successful. I went ahead and entered her in all of the events I had planned to do in Chattanooga. As the days went by, it became obvious that the breeding had, in fact, been successful this time and little “Zodlets” were on the way. An emergency C-Section brought them into the world on April 22, 2015, two boys and two girls survived and they now have the task before them of living up to their mother’s accomplishments!! “Zod“ was an incredibly good mother and in spite of her lack of milk, provided all the loving care and
20
Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016
nurturing that we could have asked from her for the pups. She still plays and instructs and “mothers” them to this day. Earlier in April of 2015, we discovered the
Coursing Ability Test and went to a practice with one of our other dogs. This seemed like a very interesting and fun activity, so when “Zod” had finished her “motherly” duties and was ready to get back into doing some of the things she enjoys, we decided to try giving her an opportunity at the CAT. The only hiccup to her first run was that the “huntmaster” called “tally ho - get the bunny”. When the lure went too far ahead of her and out of sight, she decide to go hunting instead. We quickly alleviated that problem by not using those terms when she came to the line and the lure operator adjusted the speed of the lure to keep it with in this wee little girls range of vision. Four attempts and three qualifying runs later, “Zod” earned her CA on 02/28/2016! Making her a new “7 way Dachshund”. Now we are concentrating on
the TD and only need to complete some paper work for her AKC Therapy Dog title. What will the next 1001 nights hold for “Zod”? Only she and maybe Sid know how the story will continue to unfold. I especially want to thank all of the wonderful people who have and continue to support us on our journey. As a “veteran” at the age of 8, “Zod” continues to amaze me, she welcomes every new challenge or venture with gusto, provides comic relief in many of life’s situations, and loves everyone she meets
with a roll onto her back and a “hi five”. But most importantly, she is my very loving companion, my snuggle buddy, MY heart dog and a constant reminder that we have many friends in the dog world, some who will always have a special place in our heart for a lifetime. I can never thank Sidney enough for sharing this very, very special and talented girl with me. !

Giving AI Your Best Shot Article submitted by the Purina Public Relations Breeder/Enthusiast Team
roducing healthy, purpose-bred Dachshunds is not easy when the sire and dam live across the country from each other or when behavior incompatibilities occur. Artificial insemination (AI) gives breeders the opportunity to see the benefit of a breeding that otherwise might not have been possible. Interest from breeders in using AI is increasing due to advances in the understanding of canine reproduction and improvements in techniques. Jane Barber, DVM, MS, DACT, who is boarded by the American College of Theriogenologist (animal reproduction) and practices at Veterinary Specialties at the Lake in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, says improved ovulation timing, the ability to keep fresh-chilled semen available longer, and the introduction of transcervical insemination (TCI) using endoscopy are among the advancements that contribute to the success of AI breeding. “Ovulation timing has to be pristine, regardless of the AI method used,” Dr. Barber says. “There is an art to the science of ovulation timing. I always like to use as many tools as I can.” Among the tools Dr. Barber uses to determine the optimal time for AI breeding are: hormonal testing (serum progesterone and LH assays), vaginoscopy, vaginal cytology, examination of the bitch’s external genitalia and vaginal discharge, and a behavioral assessment. Progesterone and LH testing are key in determining when a bitch is ovulating and thus when to breed. A surge of LH stimulates the release of eggs from the follicles, triggering ovulation and the rise in progesterone. When progesterone reaches 5 to 10 nanograms per milliliter of blood tested, a bitch is ovulating. In two to three days post-ovulation, the eggs mature to the point they can be fertilized. The ideal time to breed is three to six days after the LH surge. It is recommended that veterinarians perform vaginal cytology on the days breedings are planned to confirm that the bitch is still in her most fertile window. Because the LH surge is brief in the bitch, lasting from 12 to 24 hours, a quick turnaround of progesterone test results is critical for AI breeding.
P
Veterinarians collect blood samples and then usually send them to reference laboratories or veterinary teaching hospitals, where chemiluminescence testing is used to detect the presence of specific enzymes. When Dr. Barber learns a bitch’s progesterone level, she can estimate what she calls “the two day rule” in AI timing. “Typically, it is two days from the LH surge to ovulation, then two days after ovulation has begun, the first breeding occurs in natural, vaginal and TCI AI,” she says. “Two days later, there is a second breeding. If surgical AI is used, and only a surgical insemination is to be performed, it is scheduled for the day in between the first and second inseminations that would occur for vaginal or TCI methods.” Just as ovulation timing is critical in breeding, so is the timing for use of semen. It is believed that fresh ejaculated sperm survives five days and maybe longer in the bitch’s uterus. Quality fresh-chilled semen may maintain its fertilizing capacity for several days up to a week or more, which allows for the successful freezing of semen that has been chilled and then shipped to a semen bank for freezing two to three days later.1 Frozen semen has a relatively short survival of 12 to 24 hours after thawing.
Storing Semen & AI Techniques Two equally successful methods are used for storing frozen semen. It can be stored in ½ cubic centimeter straws, a method used in the cattle industry, or in small pellets. The straw method has a slower rate of freezing and thawing compared to the pellet method, which freezes semen quickly into a small, pelletized form. Cryopreservation, or semen freezing, and the subsequent thawing diminish semen quality and longevity, which is why special insemination technology is needed. Frozen thawed semen must be placed close to the fallopian tubes for acceptable conception rates. Surgery is one method of AI. The 30-minute procedure, performed under general anesthesia, entails making a small incision in the abdominal wall through which a veterinarian deposits semen directly into the uterus. Among the benefits of surgical AI is that it allows compromised-quality semen to be placed close to the ovaries so sperm does not have far to go to reach the oviducts where fertilization will occur. “This method works well with frozen semen and subfertile males and females,” Dr. Barber says. “The disadvantages are the cost, the need for general anesthesia, the invasiveness of the procedure, and the ability to only inseminate a bitch one time three days after ovulation.” TCI is a minimally invasive nonsurgical alternative. Performed without anesthesia, TCI is a procedure that allows for placing semen directly into the uterus. A bitch stands for the procedure, often with the owner assisting, while a veterinarian inserts an endoscope, a tiny video camera,

into the vagina to provide viewing of the opening of the cervix on a monitor. A flexible catheter is maneuvered through the cervix into the uterus, and semen is pushed slowly through the catheter from a syringe directly into the uterus, helping to reduce the loss of sperm in the vaginal and cervical folds. Usually performed as an outpatient procedure, TCI has a Photography by higher conception Kristin Cihos-Williams rate than vaginal AI, which uses an insemination pipette to deposit semen via a syringe. The cost is higher than vaginal AI due to the training and technology involved, but TCI can be performed on bitches that are slightly older with good results, particularly when using freshchilled or frozen semen. Nutrition and body condition also play important roles in optimizing fertility. Bitches that are overweight or out of condition may experience impaired fertility due to decreased ovulation, silent heat and prolonged interestrous2 intervals. Feeding a dog food with optimal levels of protein and fat, such as Purina Pro Plan, portioned to meet a bitch’s specific energy requirements can help support a healthy body condition. Many variables are involved in achieving success with artificial insemination. Considerations include the accuracy of ovulation timing, the quality of the semen, which is affected by the handling, processing and shipping procedures, age of the bitch, proficiency of the veterinarian performing the insemination technique, and the fertility of the dog and bitch. For best results, consult your veterinarian.
Tools to Determine Ovulation Here are tools that help determine when a bitch is ovulating and thus the appropriate time Photography by to breed. You should consult your veterinarian Cassie Nickasch for specific information. • Hormonal testing (progesterone and LH assays) indicates the presence and/or the amount of the reproduction hormone in the blood. Progesterone starts to increase in the bloodstream just prior to ovulation. • Vaginoscopy using an endoscope provides a view of the vaginal epithelium, which helps to determine the fertility peak. The appearance of the vaginal epithelium is crenulated, or has a wavy outline, during the period of optimal fertility. • Vaginal cytology determines if the bitch is in season (estrus) or if she is out (diestrus). The degree of epithelial cell cornification, the process in which the cells lose their nuclei and flatten out, helps to determine if the bitch has transitioned from proestrus to true estrus. Normally, hormonal testing begins when there is at least 65 percent vaginal corneal cornification. • Examination of the bitch’s external genitalia, which should be enlarged and soft when she is fertile. • Examination of vaginal discharge, which should be scant and less bloody when fertile but varies among bitches. • A behavioral assessment can determine whether a bitch is flagging, or moving her tail when her perivulvar area is tickled, a sign of receptivity to being bred.
Lafora Disease continued from page 14 Epilepsy should be treated symptomatically. In some cases this can be difficult as some dogs do not respond to traditional drugs like phenobarbital. The author typically starts with potassium bromide at 30-40mg/kg once daily. A serum bromide concentration should be assessed 8-16 weeks after initiating the drug (it takes 4 months to achieve steady state so ideally 16 weeks) aiming for a concentration of ~ 1000mg/l / 15 mmol/l - 2000mg/l / 25mmol/l. Higher serum concentrations are acceptable if there are no adverse effects e.g. sedation and ataxia. If this concentration has been achieved and the number of seizures is still unacceptable then phenobarbital at 3mg/kg every 12 hours should be added. Phenobarbitone should also be considered if there are clusters of seizures. A serum phenobarbital concentration should be assessed 2 weeks after initiating the drug. If the seizures are still not adequately controlled when the phenobarbital serum concentration is ≥25mg/l (120μmol/l) then switching to an unlicensed anti-epileptic drug should be considered. The author typically chooses Levetiracetam (Keppra) at a dose of 10-20mg/kg twice to three times daily. Coincidently with starting the levetiracetam the phenobarbital is slowly withdrawn (as long as the seizure frequency does not increase). Anecdotally levetiracetam is more effective than phenobarbital or bromide for controlling the myoclonus (jerking) and one should consider using this drug as first line therapy if the myoclonus is disabling. Some dogs have a problem walking in sunlight and some owners have found that the jerking significantly improves if the dog wears sunglasses (DOGGLES).
Follow up The disease is not generally fatal in the dog however the myoclonus and seizures may worsen with time and older dogs may become blind and ataxic compelling the owner to euthanasia. The Beagle has a different genetic mutation and a more severe form of the disease. In particular the epilepsy may be drug resistant in this breed. The human form of the disease is also more serious with affected children developing dementia and status epilepticus; most do not survive beyond their second decade.

Dachsing Through the Snow By Wendy Snyder
One of my passions is to do different activities with my dogs. At this point I have done tracking, agility, obedience, rally, conformation, earth dogging, and field trialing. I had never thought that I would ever get to sled with my dogs! What a dream come true. How fun… I have a good friend that raises Chinooks. She likes to sled with her dogs and she asked me to join her. Will this be a great experience, challenge, or both? After we fit the dogs for their harnesses, hooking up turned out to be an adventure in itself. We had to hook her dogs up first a bit further down the trail. Her dog Trask was so excited to see dogs he knew from our obedience classes, he wrapped his mom Koyuk and himself around the tree that their sled was anchored to. We had no idea that the harnesses she used on her Chinooks would fit my dachshunds. As long as we could keep the lines tight, their little legs didn’t trip over the leg loops. We also made sure that there was a basket on board the sled for Hope (12 years old) to ride in if she showed any signs of fatigue. She loved the run and kept up with the youngsters the entire trail. I guess it pays to keep those older dogs in good shape as well as the young ones. Kaylee untangled her team and we were off and running. I had no idea that it would be as difficult as it was to keep them going forward on the trail. As we found out, there were many little critters on the way. We had more success after I put the young one Bodi, 2 years old, up front as “ lead” dog and put Louie, 5 years old, as the “wheel” dog. The other two dogs in my team were Hope at 12 years old and Maggie at 8 years old. I wasn’t quite sure where this would “lead” but off we went chasing Kaylee and her experienced team. The speed with which we traveled down the trail was much faster than I expected, I spent a lot of the way helping with my foot to the side of the sled and holding on for dear life. Kaylee had told me that whatever happened never let go of the sled. Are you kidding, that was my only salvation when my leg felt like it was going to fall off.
The speed with which we traveled down the trail was much faster than I expected, I spent a lot of the way helping with my foot to the side of the sled and holding on for dear life. We traveled along a groomed snowmobile trail, surrounded by the beautiful Cascade Mountains, lush with evergreens, shadowing the trail from the bright sunshine. The snow was our beautiful fluffy Spring snow. The temperature was a perfect 46 degrees, not too cold for the dogs or me. Because of the Spring weather, my dogs thought it might be fun to detour into a glacier fed creek. It took all I could do to keep them on track and not in the water! After a 4 mile loop we were back at our starting point. While unhooking the teams, we spotted the elusive endangered Snowshoe Dachshund shown in the picture below. It may be the only one in existence. We were all tired after such an amazing day. One of my dreams fulfilled with my dogs. The dogs slept all the way home, dreaming that they might be the next winners of the Iditarod.

check it when I wrote the report). 2. Under “New Business”, it is not correct that there has (ever) been only one reimbursement for shipping costs of samples to Breen Lab — it is correct that there was only one (the one I failed to list in the financial report) during the time frame the report covered, i.e., 10/23/13 to 10/23/14, but during the period 12/26/12 thru 10/21/13 there were five such reimbursements and they were not capped at $50 per reimbursement as I was not aware that a cap had been set. The amounts of these reimbursements were as follows: 12/26/12: $48.45; 5/23/13: $50; 8/29/13: $50.22; 10/21/13: $120; 10/21/13: $55.21. That’s still not a very good response rate from the fancy but it is better than “only one”. As a point of information for the board: The last time there was any activity in the hemangiosarcoma restricted account was on 2/25/14 when the reimbursement noted above in #1 was sent. Since that date there have been no further donations earmarked for hemangiosarcoma nor have there been any specimen sample shipping reimbursement requests submitted or paid out. Motion passed to accept the previous minutes with the above suggested changes.
Treasurer’s Report Denny reported receiving a 2015 report from Ruth Robins 3 days ago. The report reflected total assets as $66,402.66 with income totaling $7,217.88 with approximately $7,000.00 from donations (including a $2,000.00 donation from DCA) and the rest from earned interest. Expenses for the year totaled $670.30 $42.17 for disk booklet mailing costs, $171.48 for renewal of domain name and $456.65 for liability insurance. In her report Ruth notes the Board did not authorize any expenditures for grants in 2014 nor 2015. She suggested a onetime grant of $10,000.00 be donated to the Morris Animal Foundation. Denny noted the Morris Foundation was now only excepting $10,000.00 donations at a time.

President Report Denny reported she reviewed the current DCA HWTF bylaws and will go over the suggested changes later in the meeting. Secretary report: Vicki reported receiving an email from Ruth Robins suggesting the following changes to the minutes of the previous meeting. Ruth emailed the following: 1. There were two additional expenses that I failed to include for the period 10/23/13 to 10/23/14: first, a $2000.00 donation to the AKC Canine Health Foundation made on 2/1/13 from earmarked hemangiosarcoma funds held at that point in the regular checking account prior to these funds being broken out into a separate restricted checking account; and second, a $45.75 reimbursement on 2/25/14 for shipping specimens to Breen Lab. Lisa had called and asked how many reimbursements there had been during the time frame of the report and I told her only one (that is where the only “one” that got into the minutes must have come from) and I did not realize I had failed to include this one in the expense section of the financial report (hemangio expenses are in a separate check book from the regular one and I obviously failed to

Motion passed for the DCA Health and Welfare Trust Fund to donate $10,000.00 to the Morris Animal Foundation to go towards Study D16CA-081 which is a one-year study to improve the outcome for dogs with acute spinal cord injuries. Denny will form a committee to look into creating a spending plan to follow in the future. She will report any suggestion coming from the committee to the Board. Denny shared an email from Diane McCormack requesting an accounting of what the DCA HWTF is doing for hemangiosarcoma research. Diane suggested the trust fund become involved with the Morris Animal Institute 2012 study involving research pursuing possible causes of hemangio. Discussion followed. Motion passed for Denny to contact Diane to discuss options for using the funds. Denny will report back to the Board electronically.
Website It was noted the DCA Health and Welfare Trust Fund website needs updating. Denny will work on updating it. There was a general agreement to have a separate website which will be connected to the DCA site. The Trust Fund will pay the $171.00 hosting fee. THE DACHSHUND CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. BOARD MEETING Saturday, January 23, 2016 Bally Hotel, Las Vegas, NV Meeting opened at 9:38 a.m. In attendance: Carl Holder, Cheryl Shultz, Vicki Spencer, Ken Levison, Walt Jones, Georjan Bridger, Jerry Cerasini, Kathy Lockyer, Denny Van Hook, Charlotte Borghardt, Ken Hagmueller, Ann Carson, Fran Colona and Cyndy Senff Absent: Larry Sorenson, Brian Owen, Paul Martin, Robert Wlodkowski and Robert Schwalbe Guests present: Steve Shultz
President’s Report Carl Holder welcomed Walter and Cyndy to the Board. He reported talking to Mary Holub concerning the cost of counting judges’ and breed standard ballots for DCA. Her parliamentary club, The Christopher Registered, will count the ballots with Mary acting as Head Teller. This is the same club that counts DCA elections. The cost is $0.75 per ballot plus $5.00 for materials, which include printing tally sheets, summary sheets and pencils. Without objection Mary Holub will count ballots.
Recording Secretary Motion was made and passed to accept the October 24, 2015 minutes. Local club contact information updates: Vicki Spencer reported having saved over 100 email correspondences, collecting up to date contact information for 54 local dachshund clubs. This information is published in the DCA roster each year and on the DCA website. She will send the information to Lynne Dahlén and Charles Delashmutt.
Ratification of Georjan Bridger’s request to open an account at Pioneer Trust Co. The Board ratified a motion to allow Georjan Bridger to open an account at Pioneer Trust Co.
Corresponding Secretary Cheryl Shultz passed out a report depicting correspondence from October 2015 to January 19, 2016. No action was needed by the Board.
Board went into Executive session at 9:50 a.m. and reconvened at 10:03 a.m.
Membership The following people were elected to DCA membership: Kathleen Newman, Michael & Diane Severns, and June Cohron.
Motion was made and adopted to authorize Sheila to purchase 250 five inch plaques in assorted coats and 30 eight inch ones. Without objection the prices of the plaques for the trophy plan will remain the same for 2016.
Treasurer’s Report Ken Levison distributed reports depicting Account Activity for 2015, Budget to Actual for 2015 and a Budget 2016 Recommendation. A motion was made and adopted for the proposed budget to be approved.
Motion was made and adopted to dissolve the Scholarship committee. Motion was made and adopted to combine the Illustrated Standard and Judge’s Education committees.
AKC Delegate Report In his absence, Larry Sorenson sent a written report requesting the Board’s input on two proposals to be voted on at the March 2016 AKC Delegate’s meeting. The first proposal involved Article VI, Section 5 of the AKC Charter and Bylaws which states delegates may charge expenses for judging but not a fee. The suggested change would allow delegates to charge a judging fee with the limit being placed at $150.00. Larry recommended the Board vote in the affirmative, believing this would bring in more experienced and knowledgeable people into the judging pool. A motion was made and adopted to accept Larry’s proposal to allow delegates to charge a judging fee not to exceed $150.00. The second proposal involved voting for candidates for three Board of Director positions. A motion was made and adopted requesting Larry to vote for Gretchen Bernardi, Linda Ayers Turner Knorr and Thomas Powers for the Board of Director positions.
Standing committees 2016 After talking to each person in charge of the various standing committees, Vicki reported the Brochure/Audio Program, Illustrated Standard, National Specialty Showcase, Newsletter Advisor, and Public Relations committees will need new chairpersons. Vicki expressed a concern with her bringing all the materials needed for the Board meetings. She felt it would be a hardship on the Board if something happened and she did not make it to a meeting. Without objection Board members will send items to Vicki and she will distribute to each member by email those needing to be copied and brought to the meeting. Any item needing distribution needs to be sent to Vicki at least seven days prior a Board meeting.
suggests not increasing the cost of 5 inch plaques for 2016, costing DCA around $750.00 to cover the difference.
Scholarship Committee A motion was made to establish an annual $2000.00 scholarship and a scholarship committee to implement the program. This motion failed.
Standing Committees Trophy Program Sheila Parish sent a report depicting the current plaques and medallion inventory. Sheila had ordered two 11 inch plaques in May 2015 at a cost of $462.00 each. The price has now gone up 43% which brings the cost to $600.00 each. She suggests DCA order 100 eight inch plaques with the idea of them lasting approximately 10 years. She suggests we order 250 five inch plaques which should last through 2017. Because the prices continue to go up, Sheila recommends ordering a large quantity to keep the cost of the program as low as possible. She also suggests that since most eight inch plaques are used at the DCA nationals, we continue to charge the clubs $130.00 costing DCA about $100.00 per year to subsidize these. She also
Motion was made and adopted to separate the Brochure/Audio visual program. DCA BOARD MINUTES continued from page 33
Karen Brunner and Mike Smith to see if they are willing to serve on the committee. Alternates are Denise Waldo and Jan Oswald. Meeting adjourned for lunch at 12:05 and reconvened at 12:35.
Proposed breed standard revision Denny Van Hook “There has been much debate over the permissible colors and patterns in the dachshund show ring. This has created confusion among judges and breeders who want to improve the breed. Years have been invested in breeding programs without clear and definitive guidance on acceptable colors and patterns. The DCA Board wishes to take a vote of the membership to clearly define acceptable colors and patterns and provide clear and unequivocal guidance for breeders and judges.
Good Sportsmanship Award Jerry Cerasini shared the trophy he obtained for the Good Sportsmanship Award. To nominate a DCA member for this award, members will be instructed to submit essays as to why this person should be considered. The website will be used to post printable ballots to be sent to Jerry and will be used for the actual voting. Agility Trophy Plan Revision – Denny brought several recommendations from the Companion Events Committee (CEC) to the Board for approval.
Below is the proposed standard revision. If approved, the effective date of the change will be well advertised and communicated to the fancy and judges.” DVH Verbiage in black ink is already included in our existing standard. Verbiage in red ink is the proposed changes. (NOTE: Current verbiage addressing white color in our existing standard is in italics and underlined. This is not a change)” DVH
Agility Trophy Plan
SMOOTH Color of Hair - Although base color is immaterial, certain patterns and basic colors predominate.
Denny requested the Board approve increasing the size of the plaques for the DCA agility trophy plan to be on par with the other venues including Obedience, Rally, and Conformation. Due to the increasing cost of the plaques, a motion was made and adopted to appoint a committee to review the Trophy Plans for all venues to ensure equity. Cheryl Shultz will chair with Denny Van Hook and Robert Schwalbe completing the committee. Obedience: 1. The CEC requested changing the verbiage for the trophy plan for the DCA Obedience Trial to clarify the awards for Highest Scoring Dog and Second Highest Scoring Dog adding the following statement; “If a dog competes in more than one class, only the highest score achieved by each dog will be considered so that the same dog cannot be awarded both the Highest Scoring Dog and the Second Highest Scoring Dog". A motion to approve this wording was made and adopted. 2. The CEC requested that the AKC Alternative Titling Classes be added to the total number of competitors when determining the type and size of trophies to be awarded. The standard Obedience Trophy Plan wording should be changed to reflect this. A motion was made and adopted to add the AKC Alternative Titling classes to the total number of competitors when determining the type and size of trophies to be awarded.
One-colored Dachshunds include red and cream, with or without a shading of interspersed dark hairs. A small amount of white on the chest is acceptable, but not desirable. Nose and nailsblack. Two-colored Dachshunds include black, chocolate, wild boar, gray (blue) and fawn (Isabella), each with deep, rich tan or cream markings over the eyes, on the sides of the jaw and underlip, on the inner edge of the ear, front, breast, sometimes on the throat, inside and behind the front legs, on the paws and around the anus, and from there to about one-third to one-half of the length of the tail on the underside. Undue prominence of tan or cream markings is undesirable. A small amount of white on the chest is acceptable but not desirable. Nose and nails-in the case of black dogs, black; for chocolate and all other colors, dark brown, but self-colored is acceptable. Dappled Dachshunds -The dapple (merle) pattern is expressed as lighter-colored areas contrasting with the darker base color, which may be any acceptable color. Neither the light nor the dark color should predominate. Nose and nails are the same as for one- and two-colored Dachshunds. Partial or wholly blue (wall) eyes are as acceptable as dark eyes. A large area of white on the chest of a dapple is permissible.
New Business Vicki received an email from a DCA member requesting the Board consider adding Barn Hunt as one of the acceptable titles for a Versatility Title. Without objection this recommendation will be sent to the Versatility committee for a recommendation.

Brindle is a pattern (as opposed to a color) in which black or dark stripes occur over the entire body although in some specimens the pattern may be visible only in the tan points. Sable-the sable pattern consists of a uniform dark overlay on red dogs. The overlay hairs are double-pigmented, with the tip of each hair much darker than the base color. The pattern usually
displays a widow's peak on the head. Nose, nails and eye rims are black. Eyes are dark, the darker the better. Piebald is a pattern (as opposed to a color) and has clearly defined areas and/or patches of white on any allowed one-colored or two-colored dogs. Two-colored piebald patterned dogs MUST show tan markings on the face and around the anus. There are no patches of lighter shadings within the colored areas as in the dapple pattern. Ticking in the white areas is acceptable. Eye color, eye rims, nose and lips are well pigmented and in accordance with the base color; eyes are never partially or wholly blue as in the dapple pattern. Head MUST NOT be more than 50% white and color(s) other than white must cover both ears, back and front, and extend without interruption from the ears over both eyes. Pure white dogs with no body spots are to be severely faulted. Nails may be partially or wholly white. WIREHAIRED Color of Hair - While the most common colors are wild boar, black and tan, and various shades of red, all colors and patterns listed above are admissible. Wild boar (agouti) appears as banding of the individual hairs and imparts an overall grizzled effect which is most often seen on wirehaired Dachshunds, but may also appear on other coats. Tan points may or may not be evident. Variations include red boar and chocolate-andtan boar. Nose, nails and eye rims are black on wild-boar and red-boar Dachshunds. On chocolate-and-tan-boar Dachshunds, nose, nails, eye rims and eyes are self-colored, the darker the better. A small amount of white on the chest, although acceptable, is not desirable. Nose and nails-same as for the smooth variety. LONGHAIRED Color of Hair - Same as for the smooth Dachshund. Nose and nails - same as for the smooth. Disqualification: Knuckling over of front legs. Colors or patterns other than those specified above. Motion was made and adopted to propose to the membership to add piebald as an acceptable pattern to the breed standard. Motion was made and adopted to bring before the membership a proposal to add under disqualification “Colors or patterns other than those specified above.” Ken Levison will submit the proposed changes to Mary Beth O’Neil at AKC and ask for her thoughts and opinions on the new wording. The revised changes will be discussed with the Membership at the Annual Meeting in May.
A recess was taken from 2:05 to 2:20. Board’s Use of Technology: Kathy Lockyer passed out a packet of information concerning the use of technology by other National breed clubs. Motion was made and adopted to form a committee to look into electronic meetings. The committee consists of Ken Levison (Chair), Kathy Lockyer, Cheryl Shultz and Carl Holder Charging for Judges Education Seminars: A motion was made and adopted for the Dachshund Club of America to charge $20 for those wishing to attend the Judges Education Seminar and Workshop at the National Specialty. This fee will include a copy of the show catalog. The process for adopting meeting dates was discussed. It was suggested Board member should come to each meeting prepared to pick a date and location for the next meeting. It was noted that we do not have to hold a meeting in January, but it does need to occur by March 15th. The next meeting will be held at the Best Western Premier in Harrisburg, PA May 5, 2016 one hour after the conclusion of Sweepstakes. Meeting adjourned at 3:25 p.m. Submitted by Vicki Spencer ___________________________________________

Delegate’s Report for March 2016 Held in Newark, NJ This is the highlights of the Delegates’ Meeting; a complete set of Delegates’ Meeting Minutes is located at: http://images.akc.org/pdf/delegate_minutes/Mee ting-Minutes-Mar2016.pdf?_ga=1.192466787. 834886114.1457026974 2016 Board Election The Chair called on the Chair of the Tellers Committee, Kim Johnson of KPMG, who read the results of the balloting for the Class of 2020, as follows: Ms. Johnson: The total number of ballots cast were 366. There are no invalid ballots, therefore, the majority to elect was 184. The results of the ballots were as follows: Linda Ayers-Turner Knorr, 57; Gretchen Bernardi, 135; Rita J. Biddle, 110; Patricia M. Cruz, 202; William J. Feeney, 207; Karolynne McAteer, 189; and Thomas S. Powers, 86. The Chair declared that Patricia M. Cruz, William J. Feeney, and Karo-lynne McAteer have been duly elected as members of the Class of 2020. The election was short with the first casting of ballots it was decided. LLS Allow Judges that are Delegates to charge a fee. There was a vote on a proposed amendment to ARTICLE VI, SECTION 5, of the Charter and Bylaws of the American Kennel Club. The amendment would allow a Delegate Judge to charge a fee of no more than $150. This amendment was proposed by the Delegate Bylaws Committee and brought forward with a recommendation from the Board. It was published in two issues of the online Gazette and the worksheet was emailed to the Delegates. The Board recommended its approval. The Chair recognized Gretchen Bernardi, Delegate for the Mississippi Valley Kennel Club, who spoke as follows: I’m speaking as Chairman of the Bylaws Committee. With some input from several people and our guests at the meeting yesterday, it became apparent that we need to be more specific on the amount you can charge per day or per event. Because we have so many events now in one day, a person could charge $150 for each event in that day, which could ring up pretty quickly. So we would like to amend this to say a fee of no more than $150 per diem or per day. Mr. Sprung: Is there a second?
This will be a majority vote. All those in favor of this amendment to add the words “per day,” please raise your hand. Thank you. Those opposed? Thank you. The majority has it. We have amended the motion. Is there any discussion? The question now is on the proposed amendment as amended. Those in favor, please stand. Thank you. Those opposed, please stand. Thank you. We are going to have to count votes. Please sit down. We want this to be accurate, so please be patient. Mr. Sprung: There was a vote to the amendment that was made by the Bylaws Committee. I asked if there was any discussion, then we went to a vote on the motion. What we are going to do is vote on the amended amendment. All those in favor, please stand. Paula will count. (Counted vote taken) The Chair declared that there were 189 in favor and 155 opposed. As there were not twothirds in the affirmative, the amendment was not adopted. Well maybe next time and as I stated in my last report this is a much divided issue and 2/3 majority is difficult to obtain. LLS There was a vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 9, Section 12 of the Beagle Field Trial Rules. This addition would allow for the creation of a National Championship event for the Beagle Two-Couple Pack sport. The amendment was proposed by AKC staff and brought forward with a recommendation from the AKC Board. It was published in two issues of the AKC Gazette and it was sent to all Delegates. The amendment was adopted. The performance world is able to get lots of things done. LLS Chief Financial Officer, Joseph Baffuto, gave his report as follows: Mr. Baffuto: Good morning everyone. Thanks for all joining us today. Specifically I myself am very grateful and excited for the occasion to provide you with the financial performance report of our 2015 fiscal year. I’m proud to say that we ended 2015 up by 2 percent to that of 2014. In 2015 we registered approximately 211,000 litters, 494,000 dogs and 228,000 pedigrees, in comparison to 210,000 litters, 481,000 dogs and 223,000 pedigrees in 2014. The simultaneous increases in each of these categories marks the first time since 1996 to 1997 that we have experienced such a favorable year over year performance. This has been an overall organizational endeavor and we should all be pleased with the efforts displayed continued on page 37... Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016

News from AKC continued from page 35 to change our course in registrations this year. Cautiously, however, we cannot rest on the laurels of this outstanding year. We are taking our outstanding success of 2015 and commandeering additional investment and growth opportunities for the AKC in areas outside of our core activities. We hope to report more great accomplishments ahead in 2016. Our next largest area is that of events. Events nearly held its own ground in 2015 as there were near equivalent number of approximately 19,000 events held throughout the year. These events garnered just over 3.1 million entries along with more than $11.3 million in related revenue. The entries and associated revenue were marginally under the prior year of 2014. There were an assorted number of smaller AKC programs that produced solid revenue increases in 2015. In particular, our electronic advertising campaigns increased by $650,000. Our interest and dividend income compounded by $467,000. Our royalty and sponsorship income improved by $251,000. And our Good Dog Helpline product added an additional $84,000 to our top line. Comparatively, reviewing AKC’s total revenue and total expenses, we can see the increase of nearly $2.5 million in revenue on the left. The blue box represents approximately $62.2 million for the 2015 year. AKC’s total expenses pictured on the right of the diagram denotes $53.4 million in blue for 2015, which is essentially flat to its 2014 comparative. Year over year, ‘15 versus ‘14, we have increased our revenues and held our costs. Speaking of costs, the AKC’s Bylaws require that the total amount of Board of Directors related expenses be reported annually to the Delegate body. Meeting that requirement here in 2015, the total amount was $299,911. The complete report is on the AKC Website listed above. This is a good report however AKC must continue the good fiscal management. LLS Items of interest from the AKC Board Meeting: AKC Canine College Progress Report The Sports and Events Department provided the Board with a progress report on the AKC Canine College initiative. Staff advised the Board that the Learning Management

System to be used for the AKC Canine College has been selected. This platform will form the backbone of an overall education strategy beyond judges education. This learning tool, coupled with other learning tools, will provide a robust resource for judges education and other AKC initiatives and represents a significant commitment by the American Kennel Club to education. Reserve Best Junior Handler: The Board VOTED to revise Section 5 of the Conformation Junior Showmanship Regulations and Guidelines for Judging Juniors in Conformation (revisions underlined below) to include the required awarding of Reserve Best Junior Handler. This will provide consistency at all Junior Handler conformation events. The Board agreed that this should be required for AllBreed/Group Shows but remain optional for Specialty Shows. This change is effective July 1, 2016, Section 5. Classes and Divisions F) Reserve Best Junior Handler. An All-Breed club offering Junior Showmanship shall offer Reserve Best Junior Handler, a Group Club or Specialty Club has the option to offer Reserve Best Junior. If a prize is offered, it must be described in the premium list in accordance with Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 5, Section 5. After the judge has awarded the Best Junior Handler, the second place winner from the class that the Junior was awarded Best Junior Handler is to return to the ring to compete for Reserve Best Junior Handler. Change to Common Site Application (CSA) Processing The Board VOTED to approve a change to the Board policy for clusters and back-toback shows to allow clubs to submit a Common Site Application (CSA) without the signature of each club in a cluster. This will allow clubs to provide the CSA information in the text of an email, without having to submit the form itself. This change is effective for CSA’s received on or after March 1, 2016. Canine Good Citizenship - Title Status Report Staff presented a memo to update the Board on the on-going progress of the Canine Good Citizen program. Over the past three years, since CGC became a title, the number of certificates and titles sold per year has increased by 50%. In 2015, 60,141 certificates/titles were sold. The number of CGC Evaluators is at an all-time high. At the end of 2015, AKC has 11,141 approved evaluators, up 23% over that past three years. CGC is one of the best outreach programs we have to provide value to the general dog owning public.! Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016

atural hunting with dogs may be divided into two basic forms. While the Dachshund was developed to deal with badger (Dachs is German for badger) and now is used on the ubiquitous fox in Europe, these species are not a problem in North America. But woodchucks (or ground hogs – Marmota monax) are a pest, particularly in the Northeast where they can eat through vegetable gardens,

concrete Jersey barriers that formed the walls of the demolition derby pit. (Figure 1) The demolition derby pit often yielded inexperienced juvenile ‘chucks who used the concave channel under the barriers as a covered escape route. But a very small dog like 7-lb Ember (Figure 2) can push the young chucks along until they pop out - and into the jaws of the larger dogs. The woodchucks who dig under the middle of the approximately 10 X 20 ft. raised bases of the display garden sheds are out of reach as we have no room to dig under the 6-inch high base. Hunting the horse barns was totally out of the question, as we never put a dog in a hole that we cannot dig out. We never hunt under concrete. On a warm day in early October, 2013, we had hunted several areas of the grounds with

climb fences meant to keep them out and fill livestock fields with nasty holes..
Border Terriers and a Norfolk or two kept the woodchuck population down and fair-goers safe.
One location that we frequently hunt is a county fairground in northern New Jersey. Its spacious, grassy parking fields were home to woodchucks whose holes dotted the landscape waiting for the ankles of unsuspecting fairgoers. Regular hunting in late spring and early summer with a mixed pack of Dachshunds,
The arrival of coyotes over the past decade changed not only the habits of the woodchucks, but also our hunting strategy. The woodchucks moved into the built-up portions of the fairgrounds excavating their dens under the sheds of the display gardens, under the cement foundations of the horse barns and along the

minimal success. We were re-grouping to depart for the local ice cream stand – a post-hunt ritual – when Ember disappeared. We were inside the chain-link and stockade fence that surrounded the demolition derby area and had parked the cars on the hard-packed gravel fill. (Figure 3) We could hear Ember voicing at something, but couldn’t see her. Tracking her voice we found a small hole in the gravel fill less that 40 feet from our cars and about 10 feet from the chain-
link and stockade fence. There was no mound customarily found at the entrance to a woodchuck den and the land seemed perfectly flat when looking across the parking area. When the dogs had been released here a hour or two earlier they gave no indication of game. The entrance hole was large enough for little Ember to disappear into, but too small to see where it led and how it branched. Thus we enlarged the entrance to see where it went and to allow a standard Dachsie or a Border Terrier to enter if needed. There were no side tunnels or branches that one usually finds in woodchuck dens, perhaps because of the gravel pack. Instead we found Ember almost standing on her head trying to dig straight down. The other dogs, Border Merlin, Dachsies Vina, Jada and Huey and Feist Paco all agreed that there WAS something down below. So we dug in the packed soil finding odd bits of trash that had been interred when the area had been leveled and packed with gravel some years before. Judy and Border Merlin scouted the outside of the fence and found another hole, probably the exit for the den we were digging. Feist Paco and Merlin then took up position to guard this hole. If the ‘chuck escaped from there it was only a short run to the shelter of the horse barns. Now we were set up with two larger dogs and their handlers watching the escape hole, and two standard Dachsies and an older mini Dachs watching us dig out Ember. From time to time she would be removed from the hole and the larger dogs asked to confirm the direction she

I looked down in the hole and saw nothing but a tuft of an old broom, but Richard had a different view. He told us to hold the dogs back and get the PHD (a post-hole digger that can be used to draw a chuck or at least immobilize the head with its powerful incisors until it is dispatched). We followed orders and stood by as he lay down and reached into the hole. With a prodigious effort he
a world record for Marmora monax it is certainly our personal best. This big boy had been digging straight down to avoid both our digging and the dogs waiting at the second hole. Without the second pair of dogs, we would not have been successful. While one can get a woodchuck with one or two dogs, sometimes it takes a pack. !

was going – straight down. All the dogs agreed this was the way to go. The only problem was that we were finding nothing, not even a trace of a downward tunnel. So the dogs round the hole were pulled back as we reconsidered what we were doing. Woodchucks can back and fill so that they wall themselves up to dig out later when the danger is gone. The general dispersal of their scent in the fresh earth masks their specific location and can confuse a dog. Maybe

Hemangiosarcoma research continues at Breen lab submitted by Barbara Axel There has recently been a rumor that the research regarding dachshunds and hemangiosarcoma has discontinued. This is serious misinformation and we do not know where it started. Dachshunds continue to be a target breed at Breen labs and the lab continues to need funds as well as samples from affected dachshunds and their unaffected senior relatives, as well as all unaffected senior dachshunds. To even contemplate turning over funding that has been collected by DCA, but not yet distributed, to be used by other breeds is damaging to those who have worked so hard to help our dogs. Below is correspondence sent from Tessa Breen in response to an inquiry last fall. I had hoped that the publication of the reply was sufficient to stop the misinformation from continuing.
From: info@breenlab.org Subject: Re: Breen Study on Dachshund Question Hi Barbara, I hope you are doing well. To answer your question: I’m positive that no one from the lab here said we are not working on dachshunds! I’m not sure who the person contactedperhaps someone in the vet school hospital here who is not involved in the research? I am the only person who talks with owners and vets about questions relating to sample submission, so it seems strange that someone would say we are not continuing to request these samples. I’ve been contacted several times recently about dachshund samples, and we have even received donations from a dachshund club within the last few weeks. I’d like to reassure you that this is ongoing research and that dachshunds are on our list of target breeds of interest. We have had several cases of feline hemangiosarcoma sent to us, but it does not seem to be reported as a common cancer in cats. Hope that helps, Regards, Tessa
Update, April 2016 There is even more misinformation making the rounds than I had thought. I am going to try to clear up some not-facts right now. 1. Myth: Since there are no pictures of dachshunds on the Breen hemangiosarcoma website they can not be a target breed. The truth: I asked Tessa Breen, office manager for the Breen lab, about this yesterday and she replied within the hour thus: We only have photos associated with the consent forms for histiocytic sarcoma submission, not the form used for the hemangiosarcoma submission- we have a fairly long list of target breeds for hemangiosarcoma , so we can’t do the same for that form as the other one. 2. Myth: Since no one has recently depleted the health and welfare funding for refunding shipping to those who submit tissue samples or blood draws the money should be diverted instead of just sitting in the bank. The truth: First the rumors that the research has been suspended, then the trickle of donations has dwindled even further and next the request for diverting the funds that remain. Well, we should be happy to know that recently all the donors have not requested that they be reimbursed. That is just like making a donation to aid further research. There is still a great need for blood draws from senior healthy dachshunds closely related to dachshunds who have died from HSA and in addition a control group of senior dachshunds whose relatives have never succumbed to HSA. We cannot reimburse you for having your veterinarian do the draw, just reimburse you for shipping expenses whether or not you are a member of DCA. Often if your vet knows that the blood draws are for research he will reduce or eliminate office fees. My vet did. 3. Myth: Not many dachshunds have been affected by HSA so there is little need to concentrate on that cancer in the future. The truth: While there is not the preponderance of affected dogs in this breed as in some others such as Golden Retrievers, there continue to be more and more dachshunds of every coat and both sizes that we should try to help those bona fide researchers who are trying their best to help us.
HSA is a cancer of the blood vessels. If discovered originally in muscle tissues it will be terminal, but will be delayed till it reaches the organs where it hastens death, and delays it only a bit with chemotherapy. 5. Myths: Prophylactic removal of the spleen can affect a cure. Frequent sonograms will help in combatting the disease. Mushroom derivatives will increase the lifespan of the cancerous dog. The truth: Since the disease is of the blood vessels surgical removal of an organ will not prevent the disease from being terminal. Sonograms will not predict that a dog does not have the disease. The small ruptures of cancerous blood vessels and healing with the result of cancerous blood being resorbed and spreading through the body before it is evident is most common. The mushroom derivative was researched in a well known university with accolades concerning its effectiveness given by the researchers. The study was funded by the people who would be financially enriched from the results of the study. That study has not been able to be replicated by independent research by independent groups to the best of my knowledge. So my friends, we really need your help in having the research by Breen who shares information with Modiano and Broad Institute continue. If you can spend just the equivalent of some entry fees to help we would surely appreciate it. The funding of research by those researchers who have been working with us for years can continue. As for the disease not being devastating, just ask a dachshund owner who has suddenly lost a healthy-seeming pet to the ravages of this silent killer. We had two die this way, and though I have had a number of generations over 50 years and it has been years since one of mine died from HSA, but this was and continues to be a trauma. Thank you for listening. Please do contact me anytime if you think I can be of any help. Barbara Axel DCA liaison to the Breen lab cliffhanger@comporium.net
4. Myths: There are currently ways to beat the disease if we do certain procedures. The truth: To the best of my knowledge there is one form of HSA that is not terminal. It is the form that is embedded in the skin. Surgical removal of the affected area with a large margin of healthy skin as well does seem to cure the disease. Dachshund Club of America Summer 2016
