These days one of the most celebrated dachshunds in the history of the breed, “Shag”, owned and handled by Jean Dieden, often gets to hang out in her office, greeting guests and accompanying her on daily trips to the post office and bank where he is always able to charms extra biscuits out of the counter workers. In Langley, WA, he is known about town by name. Still, at 12 years of age and with Jean’s schedule allowing competition in just two local field trials a year, he still continues to bring his game, winning #27 Absolute just last fall.

Jean has been privileged to have a front row seat to all of Shag’s exploits throughout his career. She has borne witness to his scent work that simply took her breath away. They have shared a working relationship during his agility and obedience careers that was truly amazing. Today, even though retired from formal competitions, they continue to enjoy the bond that comes after working so closely for so many years.

For ten memorable days, Badger Dachshund Club, Minnesota Dachshund Club, Dachshund Club of Great Lakes and Madison Area Dachshund Club joined together in hosting the first Harvest Moon Classic.

The clubs held eight field trials, two earthdog tests, and a CGC test at the Northern Illinois Beagle Club in Roscoe, Illinois.

Exhibitors came from Idaho, Texas, South Dakota, Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Mississippi, and Canada, as well as the Midwestern states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Ohio.

People and dogs travel from all parts of the country, united in their desire to spend a week with others who find that time spent working with their dogs is the best sort of vacation they can imagine.

This is no normal camp: it is designed specifically for “dog people” (and we know who we are, don’t we?). The camp offers a week filled with classes in a wide variety of dog sports at a range of experience and ability levels, with highly qualified trainers, many of them judges in their respective sports, for these classes.

The AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards were created to honor those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of purebred dogs on a national level. The recipients were selected by votes cast by AKC member clubs for nominees in each of the following categories: Conformation, Companion Events and Performance.

Welcome to the “Health and Welfare” segment of the Newsletter. It is hoped that DCA members will submit ideas for this section of the magazine as well as articles about experiences pertaining to the healthcare of their dogs that will be of interest to other readers.

NEW EYE CERTIFICATION REGISTRY The OFA is pleased to announce a new Eye Certification Registry (ECR). The new ECR is a joint effort between the OFA and the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and has the full endorsement of the ACVO and their member Diplomates. The addition of eye examination results to the OFA database will unquestionably make the OFA the most complete resource of canine health screening results in the world and enhance this important toolset for responsible breeders to make more informed breeding decisions in an effort to reduce the incidence of inherited disease.

The new OFA Eye Certification Registry will be available as of November 1, 2012. Transition to this new registry should be seamless for both owners and examining ophthalmologists: • EXAMS - There will be no changes to the existing exam protocols. The standard exam process will still be conducted by ACVO

Diplomates assessing dogs for the presence or absence of observable hereditary eye disease.

• RESULTS - There will be no changes to the interpretation or classification of the exam results. Dogs with normal eye exams will receive OFA eye clearance numbers similar to the OFA numbers issued for hips, elbows, cardiac, etc. Dogs with observable, but passing conditions (currently known as Breeder Option Codes), will be issued notated OFA eye clearance numbers. Dogs with observed eye diseases of significance will be reported as ineligible for eye clearance numbers. A complete list of Breeder Option Codes and Ineligible Categories will be available on the OFA website soon.

• FORMS - All active ACVO Diplomates will receive the new OFA exam forms by midOctober in advance of the transition. The forms will be similar in format to the exam forms currently in use.

• VALID PERIOD - OFA eye certification numbers will be considered valid for one year from the time of the exam.

• FEES - Fees for both initial submissions ($12) and resubmits ($8) of passing results for eye certifications will remain the same with one change. In order to maximize the benefits to breeders it is important to encourage owners to Dachshund Club of America

share all exam data, both normal and nonpassing results. To that end, there is no charge to owners to submit non-passing results to the database if they authorize open disclosure.

• ONLINE ACCESS - All normal/passing eye exam results submitted to the OFA will be available on the OFA's website. Non-passing results will be available on the OFA website if the owner authorizes disclosure.

• AKC - OFA eye certification numbers will be shared with the AKC for inclusion on their registration and pedigree documents if the dog was permanently identified via microchip or tattoo AND the I.D. was verified by the ophthalmologist at the time of the exam.

• STATISTICAL DATA COLLECTION Regardless of whether the owner opts to register eye exam results with the OFA, the examining ophthalmologist will submit the results for statistical purposes to monitor disease prevalence and progression at the breed level. Working with the ACVO Genetics Committee, the OFA will make aggregate statistics available to ACVO Diplomates, breed clubs, and the public.

In addition to the new Eye Certification Registry (ECR), the OFA is working with the ACVO to establish a new Clinical Database of

Ophthalmic Diagnoses (CDOD). Recognizing that the ECR represents a biased population of primarily normal dogs, the CDOD will capture additional data regarding disease prevalence for those dogs presenting to private and institutional practices for reasons other than a certification exam. Together, the OFA's new ECR and CDOD will be important tools to monitor canine inherited eye conditions and reduce their incidence.

As a not-for-profit organization, a portion of the proceeds from all OFA eye registrations will be donated to the ACVO Vision for Animals Foundation to support research leading to the elimination of ocular diseases causing vision loss and suffering in animals. In keeping with the OFA's existing policy to support canine health research grants, these donations will be in addition to grants supported through the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the Morris Animal Foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions regarding the new OFA Eye Certification Registry Is the OFA Eye Certification Registry (ECR) replacing CERF? Is CERF going away?

The OFA and CERF have always had a collaborative working relationship. However, we are two distinct organizations. The OFA cannot speak for CERF. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) has designated the OFA's Eye Certification Registry as their endorsed registry as of November 1, 2012. ACVO diplomates (veterinary ophthalmologists) will be receiving OFA eye examination forms in mid-October, and the ACVO is encouraging their use and registration of results with the OFA going forward.

How will this transition affect those breeds including CERF as one of their CHIC requirements?

The key element of the requirement is the exam itself, not the organization registering the result. There are no differences in the eye examination protocol whether the intent is to register with CERF or the OFA. The exam protocol and the resulting interpretation and classifications are the same. Prior to the transition date, all CHIC requirements that currently include CERF eye exams will automatically be updated. The new criteria will read, “Eye examination by an ACVO Ophthalmologist with the results registered with either the OFA or CERF”. Going forward, both OFA and CERF registrations will meet the CHIC eye exam criteria.

Will the OFA continue to display CERF results on their website?

All public domain data that CERF has previously shared with the OFA will be archived and will continue to be displayed on the OFA website.

Is my ophthalmologist aware of the transition?

The ACVO Board of Regents communicated

formally with all active diplomates in early August. The OFA has also communicated with all active diplomates regarding the implementation. Additionally, the new program will be formally rolled out at the Annual ACVO Meeting in October.

Are there any differences between the OFA's Eye Certification Registry and CERF? For the average dog owner, there are no significant differences. The exam protocol, interpretation of results, and fees are all the same. Eye exam results registered with the OFA will continue to generate certification numbers, and these will be forwarded to the AKC and displayed on the OFA website.

Since there are no significant differences in registering results with the OFA or CERF, what are the benefits of one over the other?

The primary benefits of the new ACVO and OFA joint Eye Certification Registry are on the backend. The OFA has committed to more frequent and enhanced reporting of aggregate statistics regarding disease prevalence and progression by breed. Enhanced reporting will be available for ACVO diplomates and for parent breed clubs. Regularly updated aggregate statistics will be made available to the public via the OFA's website. The OFA is also establishing a Clinical Database of Ophthalmic Diagnoses to capture data from ACVO diplomates on canine

eye exams in an institutional or practice setting where the dog is presenting for reasons other than a certification exam. The inclusion of this data will greatly enhance disease monitoring. As a not-for-profit organization, the OFA will be sharing a negotiated percentage of all eye registrations with the ACVO Vision for Animals Foundation to support research leading to the treatment and elimination of ocular disease.

support all of these efforts and will maximize the value of data in a single central database.

CERF exams are currently considered valid for one year. What about the OFA Eye Certification Registry?

OFA eye certification numbers will also be valid for one year from the time of the exam.

If I previously submitted an eye exam to CERF, and submit follow up exam results to the OFA, will the OFA charge the initial or resubmit fee?

In the above scenario, even though it represents an initial submission to the OFA, if a previous CERF submission on the dog is documented, the reduced resubmit fee ($8) will be applied.

How should breed clubs that incorporate specific CERF language into their Code of Ethics, Breeder Guidelines, Advertising Requirements, etc. handle the transition?

Neither the OFA nor the ACVO can dictate how clubs handle these types of changes, especially since the changes may be specifically governed by their club Constitution, By-Laws, or Operating Policies. However, since the eye exam is the key element, not the registry, the OFA recommends updating such language in line with the following…”eye examination for observable inherited eye disease by an ACVO diplomate (ophthalmologist) with the results registered

with either the OFA or CERF”.

Can I submit a CERF exam form to the OFA's Eye Certification Registry?

Since the exam data is the same, the OFA will accept submissions recorded on CERF exam forms. However, so the owner's intent is clear, the OFA will require a signed note from the owner or authorized agent indicating they would like the exam results entered into the OFA Eye continued on next page...

Certification Registry, and accompanying payment must be made to the OFA. If a submission includes a check payable to CERF, the application will be returned.

How will OFA assign eye certification numbers and how will they differ from CERF? The OFA will assign eye certification numbers for dogs found free of observable inherited eye disease. Dogs with observable, but passing conditions (currently known as Breeder Option Codes), will be issued notated OFA eye certification numbers. Dogs with observed eye diseases of significance will be reported as ineligible for eye certification numbers. The OFA eye certification numbers will follow the same format as existing OFA numbers for other disease databases. The following example illustrates the anticipated format: LR-EYE100/24M/VPI. In this example, the first two characters indicate the breed, in this case a Labrador Retriever. EYE indicates this is an OFA eye number. 100 would indicate this is the 100th Labrador assigned an OFA eye number. These numbers are issued sequentially within breed.

24M indicates the age in months at the time of evaluation, and the sex. VPI indicates that the dog was permanently identified via microchip or tattoo and the examining ophthalmologist verified the I.D. during the examination. Other possible suffixes would include NOPI (no permanent identification provided), or PI (permanent id provided on the application but not verified by the examining ophthalmologist).

Only dogs with verified permanent identification will have their normal results automatically shared with the AKC for inclusion on their registration and pedigree documents. Breeder option codes will be noted on the OFA report and on the OFA website.

What will be the OFA's policy regarding posting of eye exam results on the OFA website?

The OFA will follow its existing policy for posting of exam results. All normal/passing results are considered public domain information and will post and display on the OFA's website.

Dogs with observable, but passing conditions (currently known as Breeder Option Codes) will have their results posted and released into the public domain, including the specific notation.

There is no option to keep a passing observable breeder option code condition confidential while releasing the passing certification number. Nonpassing results will only be posted and released if the owner authorizes disclosure.

Will eye exam clinics continue to be held at dog shows?

Eye exam clinics are arranged independently by the show giving club and the attending ophthalmologist. There is no reason to believe that these will be discontinued.!

The Officers and Board of Directors of the DCA Health & Welfare Trust Fund thank the generous donors who have made contributions in support of the fund’s goals of promoting education and research aimed at eliminating health and genetic problems within the breed.

Of special note this past year are a number of donations which have been specifically targeted for research into hemangiosarcoma, including the proceeds of the Silent Auction sponsored by Diane McCormack at DCA 2012. The Trust Fund continues to fund the printing and distribution of the DCA disk booklet.

As you can see, the majority of the donations listed below were given by individuals in memory of or in honor of special humans and canines — however, other kinds of gifts are always welcome.

If your company matches gifts made to non-profits and charities, please be sure to list the DCA Health & Welfare Trust Fund as a “match recipient” when you designate your donations for the year. Dachshund Club of America Proposal for DCA Judges Selection There have been a number of concerns expressed by members over the years regarding the present system used at the DCA Annual Meeting to select the National conformation judges. Some of the major concerns are: • All nominations come from the floor at the Annual Meeting • The moratorium for judges should include all varieties for at least 3 years • Members not attending the Annual Meeting have no participation in the judge selection process • The election of a judge by variety is greatly influenced by members who do not show in that variety • The election process, by variety, at the Annual Meeting takes too long The following proposal was designed as a new and different approach to address these issues and to provide a fair and smooth selection process. This proposal will be on the agenda and voted on by members at the DCA 2013 Annual Meeting. If adopted, the process will start in 2014 for the selection of the 2016 judges.

STEP # 1 A notice will be posted in the DCA Newsletter approximately six months before the Annual Meeting to announce the dates when each DCA member can submit one judge nominee, in writing, to the Corresponding Secretary. Nominations will not be by variety; any judge nominated and elected will be drawn to judge a variety by lottery. All judges who have judged a variety at DCA in one of the three prior years will be listed as ineligible due to their recent DCA assignment.

STEP # 2 The Corresponding Secretary will validate that each nomination is from a DCA member, with only one submission per member. After the nomination period closes, the Corresponding Secretary will then tabulate the nominations to determine the ten judges with the highest number of nominations.

In case of a tie, both nominees tied will be included in the top ten, and the judge with the next lowest number of votes will be moved down the list.

The Corresponding Secretary will then validate that these top ten nominees are not provisional, are eligible to judge dachshunds, and are in good standing with the AKC. The Corresponding Secretary will contact these top ten nominees to confirm his/her availability and acceptance of the DCA contract terms, if elected. The results will be held as confidential and will be announced to the membership at the Annual Meeting. No nominations will be accepted from the floor at the Annual Meeting.

STEP # 3 At the Annual Meeting, each member present will vote by ballot for three judges from the list of ten nominees. The three individuals having the most votes will judge DCA.

STEP # 4 Members present will vote a second time by ballot for three of the remaining nominees. The top three judges from this second ballot will be alternates.

STEP # 5 Each variety name will be on a separate slip of paper & placed in one container. The three judges’ names elected to judge DCA will be placed in a second container; and the three alternate judges’ names will be placed in a third container. The variety will be drawn first followed by the drawing for the judge of that variety, followed by the drawing for the alternate judge for that variety. The process will continue for the remaining two varieties.

SPECIAL NOTES: • The total membership has an opportunity to participate in the nomination process • The final selections are still determined by members present at the Annual Meeting • There is a three year moratorium for judges who have served, allowing more opportunity for others to be honored • More awareness and consideration will be given by members when voting since the variety judges are assigned by lottery.

• The total process will require less time at the Annual Meeting

or ten memorable days, Badger Dachshund Club, Minnesota Dachshund Club, Dachshund Club of Great Lakes and Madison Area Dachshund Club joined together in hosting the first Harvest Moon Classic. The clubs held eight field trials, two earthdog tests, and a CGC test at the Northern Illinois Beagle Club in Roscoe, Illinois. Exhibitors came from Idaho, Texas, South Dakota, Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Mississippi, and Canada, as well as the Midwestern states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Ohio. The clubs received support from their “brothers in field trialing”, with beaglers Bob Brandemuehl, Irv Schirmer, Don Howard, Bill Dyer and Jim Garard lending a hand.

Badger Dachshund Club kicked the events off with the first two field trials on Friday and Saturday, October 5th and 6th with entries of 100 and 85, respectively. The trials’s organizers had decorated the clubhouse in the spirit of the

“harvest moon” theme, but they were completely outdone by Mother Nature. The sumac stood in bright red contrast to the glorious golds, oranges and greens of the trees at the height of their fall colors.

The conditions were extremely dry and the cool temperatures and strong winds challenged even the most experienced dogs. The judges sorted the good runs from the not so good runs as the dogs found ways to work in the tough conditions. But rabbits were plentiful, the beating lines were long, and high spirits prevailed.

Blustery winds and cold temperatures continued for Minnesota Dachshund Club on Sunday and Monday, October 7th and 8th, which had entries of 84 and 78, respectively.

Minnesota Dachshund Club followed up their field trials with a pair of Earthdog Tests on Tuesday, October 9th. The morning test had 52 entries, and there were 42 entries in the afternoon for a total of 94 earthdog entries!

Seventeen earthdog legs were awarded to Dachshunds. Two Dachshunds earned new titles, and two Dachshunds earned endurance earthdog double-Q’s. Earthdog was a load of fun and finished early enough for the Dachshund exhibitors to enjoy a bit of practice on the grounds. The earthdog events ran very smoothly and the club did a great job running two tests in one day.

Pamala Hopkins organized a plant/flower bulb exchange and several exhibitors brought iris and daylily and hosta and elephant ear from all over the US to exchange with one another. I cannot wait to see the new colors in my flower bed next spring and reminisce on the Harvest Moon Classic and the fun we had trading plants and sharing time with good friends.

On Wednesday, October 10th, the Madison Area Dachshund Club hosted a Canine Good Citizen Test. There are now 12 new Dachshund canine good citizens. Other exhibitors went for massages and manicures, some did laundry or

shopping, while others found plenty of land nearby for tracking. Lois Ballard generously donated her time and expertise to certify three Dachshunds for TD testing, and ran a practice VST line with Maxine Brinker and MACH4 Nutmeg V Dorndorf L CD RA MXC MJG2 (Nutmeg). Look for an announcement soon that Nutmeg has earned her VST because that pair has talent! Brace beagler, Don Howard, and Hall of Fame beagler, Jim Garard, took several people out to the field to watch their dogs work, and spectators were impressed with the close and methodical work of their hounds. It was a good day for giving back or paying it forward with the beagle club, and a few of those in attendance cut brush, set traps for rabbits outside of the grounds, and even built some new rabbit traps!

For a day off, there were a lot of different ways to enjoy a beautiful autumn day in the Midwest.

The Dachshund Club of the Great Lakes was up next with field trials on Thursday and Friday, October 11th and 12th. Entries on Thursday were 86, followed by 70 on Friday. The blustery winds continued for the rest of the week, but the hounds and handlers persevered with new field champions being made every day.

By Friday, the wind finally took a vacation and a light rain began to fall. The temperatures rose from the 50’s of the previous days into the 60’s.

Exhibitors took the weather in stride and were glad for the better scenting conditions. Jim Garard has always enjoyed the tradition Dachshund field trialers have for handing out awards, and got in the spirit of things on Friday by wearing “formal” attire.

It was a joy to watch the open classes figure out what they were supposed to do and to do it so well. On Saturday at the Badger DC FT, Kimberly Ristedt finished her red standard long, DC Doxdane’s Aviance Krewe du Vieux SL (Krewe) who was also Best of Breed at the 2012 DCA National Specialty. Four of the 13 new field champions came back for placements in the field champion stakes. Jeff Boehne, who is one of several new people to field trials at this event, finished his red standard wire, GCH DC Hundeleben Zis Und Zat Of Brownwood SW (Ziggy), on Friday at the DCGL field trial and then Ziggy got NBQ on Saturday at the MADC FT during his first time to run with “the big dogs.” Patt Nance finished her red, standard long, FC Cadium Aurinkosoturi (Viljo) on Friday at the DCGL FT and he took first place in the FCD at the MADC FT on Saturday! Sherry Ruggieri finished her 7 month old wild boar standard wire bitch, FC Tusoksori-Ugraszto Husniya (Niya) and she came back to earn a third place in the field champion bitch class.

Pamala Hopkins finished her wild boar miniature smooth boy, FC Hoppledach’s Keokuk ME CGC (Keo) and he came back in the field champion dog class with a fourth place. There are definitely some very competitive new dogs in the Field Champion classes and I will look forward to seeing more of them.

On Thursday evening we celebrated Cheri Faust’s birthday with a “wild thing” dinner. We dined on venison and halibut and walleye along with home-grown acorn squash, sweet potatoes

and so many desserts, you could have fed an army. We shared stories and jokes as we came together as a family to prepare and eat this dinner, which included things that were “wild”, and things that made you feel “wild”!

The rain continued on Friday night, and by roll call on Saturday when the Madison Area Dachshund Club held the

We are so very lucky to be welcome at these grounds in this day when so many beagle clubs seem to be disappearing.

At the end of the week, there had been 724 total entries in the field trials, earthdog tests, and Canine Good Citizen test. There were thirteen new field champions/dual champions, twelve new CGC’s, 1 new JE, 1 new ME and 3 dogs newly certified to test for their TD. We all made some new friends, enjoyed our time with old friends, got a few new folks hooked on the

first of their two trials, it had become a pouring rain. The exhibitors took the weather change in their stride and were making jokes about the challenges Mother Nature had bestowed upon us. At roll call, Denny Van Hook broke out in a chorus of “I feel pretty, oh so pretty” and set the tone for the morning. The gallery was clearly having fun as they sang and, umm, danced in the field to a pretty eclectic variety of songs. The gallery singing and dancing to the “Time Warp” makes an interesting addition to a field trial! After another day in the field, we gathered on Saturday evening for one of many bonfires and sang along to the moon-themed songs put together on a CD made for the event.

The Sunday trial concluded at 2:30 in the afternoon with over twenty people still in the field.

Almost all of the awards were distributed in person, and not just picked up with a dash out the door. It was unanimous from all of those present that the clubs should hold these events again.

In January 1999 I was competing with “The Eiger,” (Shag’s sire) in obedience when I met and quickly became fast friends with Selma McNamara, of I Spy dachshunds. “The Eiger” carried many of the traits that Selma was looking for, a harsh coat, beautiful head and expression, and a willing to please attitude. His pedigree went back to some multi-titled German hunting dogs. A while later Selma bred her “Karma” to “The Eiger” with the pick puppy to be my “stud fee.” Busy with a career and my training adventures with “Buster” I was at a point when I was not so interested in adding another dog to my home. In all honesty, I tried contacting many people who had shown interest in my dogs to see if they would like this pup, but it was one of those time periods when no one seemed to want a dog “at this time.” The largest male pup stood out to me in Selma’s yard. He would carry around sticks (or whatever) so proudly and you couldn’t help but be enamored with his attitude. Eventually, “Shag” came home with me while I continued my search for a good home for him…For fun, as with all my puppies, I put a tracking harness on the little squirm, and we started a simple training progression. The rest, as they say, “is history.” Shag took to tracking with skill, dedication and enthusiasm I

had not seen before. Within a few weeks with limited training he was able to run quarter mile long TD length tracks and showed no signs of slowing down. That November, still 3 months of age and on unfamiliar fields, Shag ran the alternate track at a test in Oregon and became certified to enter a TD. The AKC requires dogs to be 6 months of age in order to enter and with the time to spare we worked on expanding his skills. We were well on our way to TDX difficulty before a local TD test came around. In late March 2001 Shag passed his TD handily. When we came home I immediately submitted his entry into a TDX test across the state “in the dry” of Spokane a month later.

Lightning struck and we survived the draw and got in. On May 6, 2001, at 9 months of age, again on unfamiliar grounds with dry cover neither of us had ever experienced before, Shag dragged me through the half mile, 3 hr. old TDX track in a little over 11 minutes, stopping ONLY while I was the one who took water at his intermediate articles. My previous tracking mentor, Sil Sanders, was one of our judges, as was Barbara Adcock, from California who admitted to not having ever seen a dachshund

track before. For once the spectator gallery was able to watch large parts of the test…we received a standing ovation when Shag found that final article.

A relative newbie to field trials, I had promised myself I would not do any rabbit work until Shag had earned his TDX, just in case the cross training caused confusion in his mind.

Now that his TDX was done, we set our plan for the 2001 DCA national specialty field trial in Portland, OR, coming up the very next month.

Scaring up a rabbit in the back yard on his return Shag had little difficulty switching to rabbit scent and, at his first trials he earned two second placements in national competition. Not a bad way to start. Still, the relative lack of trials in the West and my schedule kept us from being able to go to any more until the following year’s DCA nationals in Illinois. At the Badger DC host trial, Shag finished his FC with his third straight placement in national competition – a first place and Best Open at the largest dachshund field trial in history, winning over 59 Open All Age Dogs and then 63 Open Bitches.

The next day at the 2002 DCA National in his first effort at running with “the big boys” in the Field Champion Dog class Shag was called back in 6th place, and held on for an Award of Merit.

Returning home Shag and I embarked on his conformation career. After a successful start and earning his first major we faltered into that awful “just need a major to finish” state with many entries donated when major entries didn’t appear or, sigh, when travelling afar only to find that the major didn’t hold. Finally, it all came together at Clackamas Kennel Club entry when, this time with Cathy Sorenson handling due to my work conflict, Shag was able to win a crossover major and finish his conformation championship. He was my third dual.

Since 2001 Shag has had a distinguished field career, placing in the Top Ten for DCA’s merit point awards in 5 of 6 years, (in 2007 placing 12th) earning 27 Absolute wins, including the 2004 and 2011 national specialty trials, and ranks among the top lifetime field champion merit point earners with over 1050 points.

Shag’s field career would have more than enough to earn him a place in dachshund history yet it turned out to be just part of his success. A truly biddable dog, he has a tremendous talent in many things performance. The same year he finished his Field Championship at DCA 2002 he also won the DCA specialty triathlon competition, qualifying in four events (tracking, field, agility and obedience, where a sneeze and a misstep cost him the High in Trial award his first time in the ring.) He is one of the few dachshunds who managed to reach the Excellent level in Agility when the rules still required a dog his size to jump in the 12” class. Even so, for years the one holdup to his accomplishing titles in all the AKC venues was his frustrating (to me!) “just miss” performances in the Junior Earthdog tunnels, triggered by an early training accident when I dropped the tunnel door over his head. Staying within twelve inches of the dowels was difficult. Finally, in 2006 at the

DCMA host test in Georgia, Shag managed to put it all together to earn his second JE leg under judge Lois Ballard. It was an honor to accomplish this goal under someone who would so be able to appreciate it.

Shag’s obedience and agility careers were unfortunately interrupted when we moved to an area with more limited training opportunities and our instructor suffered a stroke. He lost his composure in noisy shows and arenas and our schedule caused us to lose opportunities to work through the setbacks, except for one shining moment. In April 2008 after a several year hiatus from competitive obedience, we entered the DCA national obedience trial in Dallas.

Thanks to all the efforts of the organizers who created an ideal ring environment, “Shaggie” was once again able to perform to his ability during his national specialty run. He earned the DCA Specialty High In Trial award with a score of 198 out of a possible 200 points. Winning the National HIT had long been a dream of mine.

Those moments in the ring performing with the style and attitude we had spent so much effort to accomplish will remain among my most cherished memories.

After the 2008 win Shag had reached the “mature” age of 8 years and, although never losing his status as primary “bed dog,” he was allowed to enjoy a relatively retired lifestyle. We continued to support the DCA national events with triathlon entries as we had every year since 2002, though long ago quitting working in training classes or matches. His memory for competition continued to serve us well and we had a lot of fun communing with our dachshund friends across the country. Shag has an incredible ability to perform well in field trials across the country under many different conditions even when entered “cold” (ie. no

warm-up or training.) He could travel with others who were able to handle him successfully at trials I could not attend, often demonstrating what I would call his “missile lock” into rabbit scent no matter how the release was managed or which handler happened to be on the end of his lead. In 2009 I was judging and did not enter the national trial, but in 2010 Shag returned, winning the Field Champion Dog Stake in Chino, CA, and earning another triathlon qualification.

As the 2011 nationals in Wisconsin approached I realized that a career change would mean that it would likely be our last cross country extravaganza. For over a decade I had enjoyed 2 – 3 week “vacations,” driving a car full of dogs across the country, attending all the DCA national events from tracking through conformation. As a board member I helped organize and arranged to support the DCA efforts with entries in all the national events.

Now 10 years old, I figured that Shag could have this as our swan song. Little did I know what he had in store! In early May we started on the first leg of the journey, an insane 2100 mile trip, and we arrived with not too much time to spare before the Variable Surface Tracking Test. The location, Pewaukee Community Technical College, was a new test location and the DCA national was its inaugural event. No local club had used the campus before, and neither judge had seen the grounds prior to the plotting day.

In spite of the test being held on Mother’s Day, there was quite a gathering of regional tracking enthusiasts as they checked out the new venue for their own clubs. Still “hung over” from the drive and the time change, I approached the morning’s draw with some trepidation. Shag and I drew track #1…there was no time to get nervous. I got Shag’s harness and line together, we joined the judges at the end of the parking continued on page 66...

Points of interest from the Delegates’ Meeting There was a large part of the meeting dedicated to the events during 9/11/2001. AKC had an active part in the support of the search dogs that worked on 9/11 and long days thereafter. AKC’s accomplishments and support for these dogs and their handlers was outstanding. The complete speeches and presentations are available on the Delegates’ Meeting minuets at the address listed above. LLS The Chair called on John Lyons, who will retire in January of 2013, to provide an update about the process of selecting his successor.

The selection committee is currently doing a search for the new COO which will be effective on January 2013. LLS Ms. Bernardi asked if AKC could find a way to bring back our field reps to our shows?

Mr. Sprung: Thank you for that, Gretchen, and we did have a discussion just this past weekend with Patty Proctor about that very item.

I don’t believe this is the last word on this issue.

FINANCIAL REPORT Peter Farnsworth, AKC’s Chief Financial Officer, gave the financial report.

Total revenues of $4.6 million in the month of August 2012 were $250,000 below budget but $350,000 above 2011. Total monthly operating expenses of $4.7 million were $200,000 below budget but $200,000 above 2011. This resulted in an operating loss of $67,000 for the month.

This was an improvement from last August’s monthly operating loss of $217,000. Our investments, Year-To-Date, are up $4.9 million but we recognize this could change at any time.

Peter Farnsworth is the new CFO. Jim Stevens will be missed, he did a great job.

Investments are doing well. LLS EXECUTIVE SECRETARY’S REPORT Agility Club Membership The Board reviewed a proposal to amend ARTICLE IV, SECTION 1, and SECTION 3, of the AKC Bylaws to expand the eligibility requirements for AKC membership to permit licensed Agility clubs that meet the criteria, to apply to become AKC members. Following discussion, there was a motion by Ms. Scully, seconded by Dr. Smith, and it was VOTED (unanimously) to amend ARTICLE IV, SECTIONS 1 and 3, of the AKC Bylaws as follows: Section 1 All Clubs or Associations which have held at least three Dog Shows, Obedience Trials, Field Trials, or Agility Trials in consecutive years under rules of the AKC and all Specialty Clubs which have been or shall be formed for the improvement of any breed of purebred dogs shall be eligible to become members of the AKC. Section 3 No Club or Association shall be eligible to be admitted to membership in the AKC unless its Constitution and Bylaws shall provide that among the objects for which said Club or Association has been formed are the holding of annual dog shows, annual obedience trials, or annual field trials, or annual agility trials, or that said Club or Association was formed for the protection or benefit of purebred dogs.

This is a VERY important proposal. It was proposed about 12 years ago and failed.

This proposal will change the makeup of the delegate body. This will be a subject we will need to examine carefully. I expect a vote on it next year. LLS Member Club Admission Fee ARTICLE V, SECTION 1, of the AKC Bylaws, provides for a one-time admission fee for new Member Clubs. The fee is to be determined by the Board subject to approval by the Delegates.

Reflections on “The Judge’s Toolbox,” Plain Speaking and some Awards

Talk about an exciting week! A puppy family of mine asked me to deliver their new pup to the Philadelphia area. Since they had a 3 year old bitch of my breeding they wanted me to take her to her first field trial in NJ as well. AND, since the North American Teckel Club was having its fall zuchtschau, gun shyness test and small game test that same week AND since there was another field trial in Maryland at the end of the week, I decided to treat myself.

Along with the amazing experience of the “super storm Sandy,” seeing lots of old pals, and making new ones, PLUS introducing a new owner to the sport, I was able to get into some very good conversations with judges I consider to have great experiential credibility as well as a passion for the game.

It was at the Maryland trials that I was introduced to the concept of a “judge’s tool box.”

While we all carry around our experiences and use them as best we can they may be limiting rather than the best “go to” tools. The tool box analogy is a clever little way to remember there are options.

The USA is one gigantic country. Unless you have some serious funds which allow you to trial every weekend in all the different states, you are going to be influenced by your particular geographic trialing customs. It is here that we can easily fall into the “we’ve always done it this way” rut. Speaking from my own experience when I judged for the first time in IL after trialing only on the West Coast, I found out how thick a skin you really need when you don’t follow the local ways, and how very cruel and vicious some of you hyper competitive trialers really can be!

Resistance to change is normal for the human race. It is/was adaptive at times. Field trials, however, are not critical to the survival of the human race. Hence, it behooves us to loosen up and learn.

Dachshund Fanciers of Southwestern Washington, she told us that when she first started judging she and her fellow trialers would make up judging scenarios and then discuss over and over the various possible ways to evaluate each one. The road trips to the trials became intensive exchanges of ideas and a place where it was safe to do so.

At the Maryland Beagle Club, I was given a lesson (on a real blackboard no less!) on different ways to judge “second series.” Please play along and see how you would answer!

Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. This is simply an exploration of possibilities.

2nd series runs: (the numbers in brackets are how they scored in the first series) Brace 1. Two starts, short runs, lost rabbit. A (70) won, B (60) lost Brace 2. Good run, worked well together. C (50) lost, D (40) won.

Brace 3. Awesome great run. E (30) won, F (20) lost.

How would you call them back for 3rd series?

We came up with 4 different scenarios.

Scenario 1: Call back E and D as 1st brace, and F and C as 2nd brace. Keep A and B in the field.

Scenario 2: Put E high. Call back F and D as 1st brace, and C and A as 2nd brace, keep B in the field.

Scenario 3 Drop A and B. Put D high, then call back C and Dachshund Club of America

This shows that there are options! The more options you have, the better a decision you can make. (What I will tell you from personal experience (again) is that if you are going to drop a brace, be prepared for backlash.)

Which brings me to a point I’ve been meaning to write about for a while.

Field trials are a game. The rules say we need judges to play the game. If you want to keep the game going, we have to have judges. I have judged few trials compared to other judges, but I have worked with gamut of experience levels.

Each and every judge with whom I judged was sincere, serious and motivated to do the very best job they could. I learned something from each and every judge with whom I was paired. I

absolutely believe that every judge out there does to the very best of their ability and is completely above board.

Why do I believe this?

Because I want to! This is gambling, people! You put your money down and you cheerfully accept the results, win, lose or draw. If you really have some strong opinions about judging, become one! We need you and your ideas! There is no reason each and every one of us should not be a field trial judge.

Now, if you truly feel that a judge is not competent, then you speak with your consumer dollar. Let the field trial club know BEFORE the trial that you are not entering that event and why. Clubs want to put on the very best trial they can. If lots of people feel the same way, the judge will not be hired. You are not forced to continued on page 61...

DCA 2012 REPORT: Report attached

DCA 2013: Carl Holder reported all venues have been approved by AKC. Motion was made and adopted to charge $30.00 per 5 x10 reserved grooming space. Free grooming will be located outdoors under a tent.

FIELD TRIAL ABSOLUTE TROPHY PROPOSAL: Robert Schwalbe reported that since Met Washington trial will consist of Open classes only and Berks County trial will offer Field Champion classes only, a request has been made to allow Absolute to be run combining the two trials.

With no objection, it was agreed to allow Absolute to be run combining the two trials.

Best of Variety check in: Since AKC requires all dogs must be checked in by the judge in the ring initially prior to class judging, Carl suggested we allow dogs, upon entering the ring, to be checked off by the judge and the ring steward and continue out. The judge will decide how many dogs he would like in each group.

With no objection, it was agreed to allow this procedure for DCA 2013.

DCA 2014: Motion was made and adopted to accept the hotel contract for the Red Lion, Sacramento for DCA 2014.

SPECIAL COMMITTEES Good Sportsmanship Award: Motion was made and adopted to offer a DCA Sportsmanship Award.

Robert reported he will contact Andra concerning the transition from the old website to the new one. Carl reported he will send DCA 2013 information to Jan Oswald and Andra O’Connell to update the site.

Motion was made and adopted to appoint Charles DeLashmutt as the DCA webmaster.

DCA National Judges Voting: Motion was made and adopted to present changes

to the DCA membership for nominating, selecting and voting for DCA National conformation judges.

The proposal will be sent out in the next Newsletter and will also be sent out with the piebald poll mailing. It will be presented and voted on at the 2013 Annual Meeting. If accepted, it will be the process followed for year 2014.

Public Relations: Lisa reported AKC sent a “Meet the Breed” book expecting her to proofread it in less than a week. She reported she found exception to a great deal of what was written in the book. After contacting AKC she and Anne Carson edited the book making it more accurate.

NEW BUSINESS: Jean Dieden’s AKC Lifetime Achievement Award will be published on DCA website.

Motion was made and adopted for any DCA member nominated for AKC Lifetime Achievement Award will have his/her name placed on the DCA website.

Smith, seconded by Ms. Scully, and it was VOTED (unanimously) to raise the $250 admission fee to $1,500. The admission fee of $250 was established in 1925 and in today’s dollars would be over $3,500. This will be read at the December Delegate meeting for a VOTE at the March Delegate meeting. The effective date would be one year from the date of adoption.

This one speaks for itself. LLS Proposal to Reduce the Number of Delegate Meetings The Board reviewed a proposal from the Delegate Advocacy and Advancement Committee to reduce the number of yearly Delegate meetings from four to three per year. The proposal suggests that two of these meetings be expanded from two days to three days in order to enable increased attendance at the various Delegate committee meetings. AKC staff endorses this proposal. There was a motion by Mr. Arnold, seconded by Ms. Cruz, and it was VOTED (unanimously) to send the proposed amendment to ARTICLE XVIII, SECTION 1 of the AKC Bylaws to the Delegates with no recommendation. The proposal reads as follows: SECTION 1: The annual meeting of the AKC shall be the regular meeting held in April. There shall also be a regular meeting of the AKC in August. There shall be one regular meeting held in December or January announced at least two years in advance. The exact date, time and location of all meetings shall be determined by the Board of Directors. Standing Delegate Committee meetings shall be scheduled on the

DCA Photograph Archival At the recent meeting of the DCA Board of Directors a proposal was approved whereby digitized DCA Archive Photographs would be formatted so as to include pertinent information about the dog in the photograph.

Many photos have a tendency to fade over time whether they are back and white or color, so the committee working on this project will restore each photo to its original color and clarity and also repair any scratches, blemishes, or creases on the photos when possible. We originally began experimenting with this project back in August of 2011 before presenting it to the DCA Board.

The information to be included on each two days immediately preceding each regular meeting in April and August and the day preceding the December or January meeting.

This will be read at the December Delegate meeting for a VOTE at the March Delegate meeting. If adopted, the effective date would be January 1, 2015.

This makes sense from a cost cutting point of view. However, fewer meetings will reduce the impact of the member clubs delegate on the decisions AKC makes. LLS Recognition of Registries in China There was a motion by Mr. Gladstone, seconded by Dr. Smith, and it was VOTED (unanimously) to add the National General Kennel Club (China), to the list of registries with pedigrees acceptable for AKC registration.

This may be financially good for AKC in the future. LLS Adding Coat Type to Registry Based on a request from the Board, Staff was directed to provide more details to explain its cost estimate for capturing Coat Type as part of the registration of a dog. Staff outlined the impact this change would have on IT, Support Services and Registration Services and estimates that the entire project will have a negative ROI of $230,000.

This will have a benefit for varieties separated by coat type, and the breeds that have the open classes divided by coat type. I will keep a close watch on this subject. LLS Dachshund Club of America

individually formatted photograph will include the registered name and number of the dog, coat variety, sex, color, breeder(s), owner(s), sire and dam (along with their parents.) There may be times when research will not yield all of this information, but as much as possible will be included.

The committee’s work will provide DCA with a corrected digitized set of the original photographs and a formatted set of photographs.

We foresee several uses for this project, such as displaying groups of photographs at the Nationals (perhaps even slide show presentation of the individual photographs), providing people interested in information about ancestors of their own dogs by requesting particular photos directly from DCA, and having a fairly complete history of the dogs in the DCA photographic archives.

This will be a long term project with the amount of time required for research and restoration of the photographs, but one to which the Committee is fully dedicated. We look forward with great anticipation to working on this project.

Parent Clubs Excellence The Board considered a proposal from the Delegate Parent Club Committee for the establishment of a program to recognize Parent Clubs that excel in organization of representation of their breeds, including their protection, preservation and promotion as well as the objectives of The American Kennel Club.

The proposal would be for an AKC award administered by the Parent Club Committee with AKC Board oversight. This will be considered further at the October 2012 meeting.

This is the program proposal which I brought forward through the Parent Club Committee. LLS JUDGING OPERATIONS Occupational Eligibility The Board reviewed a staff recommendation to modify the policy restricting when a judge may present a seminar in conjunction with a judging assignment. This will be considered further at the October 2012 meeting.

OK. LLS NEW BUSINESS Judging Approval Process Staff was directed to take a survey to evaluate the judging approval process and to report the results back to the Board.

Camp Gone to the Dogs

by Holly Deeds Every June in the beautiful mountains of southern Vermont on the campus of Marlboro College, there is a coming-together of dog lovers that has to be experienced to be believed.

People and dogs travel from all parts of the country, united in their desire to spend a week with others who find that time spent working with their dogs is the best sort of vacation they can imagine.

Camp Gone to the Dogs is no normal camp: it is designed specifically for “dog people” (and we know who we are, don’t we?). The camp offers a week filled with classes in a wide variety of dog sports at a range of experience and ability levels, with highly qualified trainers, many of them judges in their respective sports, for these classes. One can participate in agility, obedience, rally, freestyle, conformation handling, tracking, lure coursing, swimming, dock diving, drill team, doggie square dancing, CGC and TDI testing, doggie manners, massage (both human and canine), animal communication, arts & crafts, pawdicures, Tellington touch, herding, nosework, really reliable recall, flyball, Frisbee, treibball, guided walks…and more. The camp director, Jeanne Richter, warns those who are new to camp not to try to do too much, especially the first year, but it is easy to overindulge, like walking past a smorgasbord and trying unsuccessfully to resist the temptations on offer. I certainly wore my dogs and myself out our first time at camp, and I barely scratched the surface of what I would have liked to do there. On my second trip to camp, I chose what I wanted to do most and firmly turned my head from all those other options…but it was tough to choose.

Tracking classes ranging from beginner to advanced are offered each morning. They’re held off campus in a local farmer’s field, and the terrain is quite different from what my dogs were accustomed to tracking over in the South.

We learned a tremendous amount from the head tracking trainer, Mary Thompson, as well as from her very able assistants. Mary even introduced us to some variable surface tracking around the college campus; watching my dog work her way over pavement, gravel, dirt, and stones was truly amazing.

Rally and traditional obedience classes are available to those who want to pursue those disciplines; the classes are held outside on grass, as are most classes, and that adds significantly to the difficulty level of performing exercises, at least as far as my grass-sniffing

dogs are concerned. Also adding to the difficulty level is the bedlam of other classes going on all around. This would not be a place where I would opt to start training a dog in obedience, but it’s a great opportunity to proof an already-trained dog who is getting ready to be shown.

Herding lessons are available, and not just to herding breeds; anyone who wants to sign up for herding can give it a try, even with a dachshund.

The herding instructor, Roy Johnson, is infinitely patient with the inexperienced dogs and handlers; he and his border collie wrangle his “hair sheep” in and out of a little pen where the novice dogs are introduced to the sheep.

Because my 12-year-old, Stella, was enthralled with the sheep when she was outside of the pen during our first trip to camp, I took her inside with the sheep on our second stay. She wasn’t nearly as interested in them when she was on the same side of the fence, but neither was she intimidated with them; she just preferred to sniff where they had been than to actually interact with them. Her prize for having gone in with them was a tuft of hair that one of them had shed; she strutted all the way back to the dorm with that. I don’t think she has a future as a herding dog, but there were a lot of other non-herding dogs who did an excellent job moving the sheep. One papillon did a particularly outstanding job of it, much to the delight of the crowd that gathered on a nearby hillside to watch the dogs take their turns in the pen.

Like herding, dock diving isn’t aimed at competition, but it gives dogs who have never tried it before the chance to give it a whirl. Most of the dogs who do so are the obvious breeds; there are a lot of labs and golden retrievers waiting to go off the dock, along with the odd border collie. And one dachshund. Stella loves dock diving, and she doesn’t hesitate to show the big dogs how it’s done.

By far the most popular and well-attended sport at camp is agility. There are six separate rings set up for agility on the main athletic field on campus, and most of the time there are classes going on in all of those rings. The agility classes offered range from beginner level to upper-level competition with some of the most

challenging courses I’ve ever encountered. One of the agility trainers is judge Clyde Closson, and last summer I recognized a sequence he put on one of the camp courses from when I’d competed with him a few months earlier. I mentioned that I’d seen it before, and he looked very surprised, saying he’d only used it once. I told him where I’d seen it, and he said yes, that was exactly where he’d used it. Clyde really pushed me and my Excellent dog, Jenny, to extend our skills beyond what I really thought we could do; we came away with a solid mastery of blind crosses and other maneuvers that most trainers might not have suggested for use with a dachshund, but which work well for us.

Camp agility classes also gave me the opportunity to train my young dog, Lark, who had taken beginner classes at an indoor venue at home but had no experience outside of that home training center. I enrolled her in the intermediate Small Dog class with trainer Jim Gregg, and it was the best transition for which I could have asked from home to a more challenging environment. She learned to respect the contacts instead of flying off them from

Above and Below Ground continued from page 52... attend every single trial and then complain before, during and after the fact. In fact, please don’t! You are being boorish and rude and spreading unnecessary negativity.

Which brings me to another point I want to make: Be good losers and winners, and teach others to be the same way around you. If someone starts a conversation with you which is defamatory about the field trial in progress, tell them you are not interested in this discussion and walk away. It’s that simple. Good manners are part of being a good sport. Save your gossip for after the trials between you and your cronies.

During the trials, show good breeding and be excruciatingly correct in all matters of field trial etiquette. Again, this is a game! We play games to have fun! If you are at the trials to have your dog’s performance reflect your self-worth, please go straight to your therapist. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, and please don’t share your

halfway up, which was a problem we’d been having ever since she started agility, and she made progress on her predilection for sniffing her way around the ring. Jim started out running big dogs but later ran Cavaliers, so he was very helpful in reading what each of the dogs in the class needed to be more successful.

The last afternoon of camp is devoted to “camp games”, with prizes and ribbons for various accomplishments (some serious, some funny). The hot-dog retrieving contest is always hysterical, with many otherwise-compliant dogs stopping to swallow as much of their hot dog as they possibly can before their human runs out to stop it from happening. There are also demonstrations of drill team, square dancing, and disc dog, and the afternoon winds up with a tunnelers course competition for any dog who wants to participate.

For me, one of the greatest joys about camp is the camaraderie with other “dog people,” many of whom come to camp every year. I missed a year between my first and second trips to camp, but when I came back I found old friends and made even more new ones. On the last night of camp, everyone, dogs included, gathers in the beautiful auditorium/gymnasium on campus for the passing out of gifts to the returning campers. It is amazing to see how many people have been coming for 10, 15, even 20 years; people plan their yearly schedule around coming to camp. It doesn’t take long to understand why.

I saw Camp Gone to the Dogs on an Animal Planet program more than a decade ago, and it stuck in the back of my mind that I would someday love to go to it. It more than lived up to my expectations. If your idea of a great vacation includes spending time with your dogs, you might want to start

dreaming of this camp, too. They hold “summer camp” at Marlboro College during the first week in June, and they also hold “fall camp” in September in Stowe, VT. Be aware that you have to reserve your spot early; they tend to fill up very early for the following year.!

Shag continued from page 37 area to start our track. A few seconds of orientation at the starting flag and then, there it was, that all too familiar body motion (stop, sniff, back step, go) that I recognized from years of watching his field work…Shag had “missile locked” onto the VST tracklayer’s scent, and he was on it like glue. He step-tracked the course with conviction, never hesitating at crossing asphalt and concrete, going up a ramp, down stairs and out into and turning across a parking lot, negotiating vegetated islands and mud ruts along the busy roadway. Without ever being more than a few feet from the track, a mere 17 minutes later, Shag passed the Variable Surface Tracking test, becoming a Champion Tracker and one of our breed’s few AKC Triple Champions. It was quite a moment, and quite a demonstration of dachshund scenting ability for the gallery to witness. If we had done nothing else that month I would have been thrilled, but Shag set out to show me that at 10 years of age, he had just been getting warmed up! A few days after the VST he repeated as Absolute Winner of the DCA national field trial, then once again showed me up by passing a JE test thousands of miles from home, and later finished with a Rally

leg the next week to win his second triathlon.

Nine years after his first, again with qualifying scores in 4 events, and again in Wisconsin.

Throughout his adventures and travels with me Shag has always been a goodwill ambassador for the breed. I don’t think he ever met a person he couldn’t charm with his happy attitude and goofball ways. He is at his best with puppies, laying low so that they could climb on him and engage in chase. These days one of the most celebrated dachshunds in the history of the breed often gets to hang out in my office, greeting guests and accompanying me on daily trips to the post office and bank where he is always able to charms extra biscuits out of the counter workers. In Langley, WA, he is known about town by name. Still, at 12 years of age and with our schedule allowing competing in just two local field trials a year he still continues to bring his game, winning #27 Absolute just last fall.

I have been privileged to have a front row seat to all of Shag’s exploits throughout his career.

I’ve borne witness to scent work that simply took my breath away, have shared a working relationship during his agility and obedience careers that was truly amazing. Today, even though retired from formal competitions, we continue to enjoy the bond that comes after working so closely for so many years. He is, without a doubt, my “bud.”

I’m really glad I kept him.!

AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards

Dodgerslist support and education for intervetebral disc disease

Performance: Jean Dieden, DVM The American Kennel Club will honor the recipients of the 2013 AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards at the December 14, 2012 Delegates Meeting Luncheon in Orlando, Florida, in conjunction with the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The winners will receive an engraved silver bowls.

A larger Tiffany and Co. bowl, engraved with the names of all recipients past and present, will remain on permanent display at the AKC Headquarters in New York City.

The AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards were created to honor those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of purebred dogs on a national level. The recipients were selected by votes cast by AKC member clubs for nominees in each of the following categories: Conformation, Companion Events and Performance. ____________________________________ Dr. Dieden has been involved in AKC Performance events with her Hathor Farm Wirehaired Dachshunds since 1992. They have earned 12 Field Championships (11 of them Dual) and over 50 “Absolute Winner” awards, including three national specialty trial wins. She has been competing at dog shows, obedience trials and tracking tests for forty years.

She has had three dogs ranked in the DCA annual “Top 20” awards and one (TC M’I Spy of Hathor Farm SW VCD1 RN OA AXJ NAP OJP OF JE) with over 1000 points is among the top 10 lifetime point earners.

Dr. Dieden has served on the DCA’s Trial Advisory Committee/Performance Events Committee for ten years, the last seven serving as chairman. This committee has been responsible for several successful AKC rule and procedural change proposals also adopted by the other hound events.

Dr. Dieden started in AKC Earthdog at its inception. Her dogs have earned over 300 qualifying scores, including 160 Master tests.

She has held over eighty tests at her home, Hathor Farm on Whidbey Island. A founding officer of the Puget Sound Earthdog Club and longtime president of the Cascade Dachshund Club she is credited for gaining CDC’s licensing status for Dachshund Field Trials and Earthdog Tests.

Dr. Dieden has enjoyed being a field trial judge for 12 years and an Earthdog judge for 16 years, enjoying judging throughout the country, including eleven classes at DCA national events.

Linda Stowe created Dodgerslist because of a Dachshund named Dodger. Dodger had IVDD and was euthanized because of the lack of knowledge that conservative treatment IS a viable treatment option. When she heard of this sad story, she immediately went to work to create Dodgerslist with one goal in mind - save dogs’ lives!

Nine years later, Dodgerslist has members in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Mexico, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, India, Morocco, South Africa, and Dubai, and even one in Hong Kong. There are people reading our main website from many more countries too!

Prevention Points

& ways to lesson the chance of making existing back problems worse • Always select a reputable breeder. Many believe IVDD is hereditary and reputable breeders always study and know the dogs in a pedigree. Reputable breeders may have less incidence of back problems.

• Always keep your Dachshund trim.

• Limit their jumping as much as possible.

Purchasing ramps may help.

• Feed a good nutritious diet.

• Find a vet that knows the breed and discuss with them their treatment(s) for disc disease.There is a checklist of questions to ask the ER, general and specialist vets on the website.

• Use common sense and avoid circumstances that could cause injuries to a long-bodied dog.

A lot of injuries occur because of slipping, sharp turns, running into things and twisting.

• Get your Dachshund used to a crate as a puppy in case of any future circumstances which would require a pro-longed confinement.

• Keep the nails cut short • A harness may prevent extra stress on the neck area.

• Always pick up your Dachshund supporting the back.

• Know the common IVDD drugs and their adverse reactions

Grounds seem dryer from the winds of Friday and some on Saturday. The colors again were beautiful. Definite feel to fall in the air. Overnight was very cold for some of the tent campers.

85 dogs over 4 classes with FCD an OAAD being run concurrently in AM; with the OAAB and FCB getting a good start before the lunch break. Finished up early enough for folks to get to the field with their dogs to run. A lot of

folks took advantage of the early finish and were in the fields.

Thank you to Larry Gohlke and Carol Luetkens for filling in for judge’s that were unable to make it at the last minute.

Chicken and the fixn’s lunch presented by Carolyn Henry with pies for dessert. Plenty of chicken left over for those who wished for dinner.

The NIBC raffle was drawn after awards and was a great success.

I’ve always called Sunny “the Navigator” because she knows all the places we usually go, and the routes we take to get there. If I tell her we are going to “Bella Doggie,” and then take a different route, she barks at me. Since she hasn’t felt well the last month or so (and we have just received her diagnosis of cancer), she hasn’t wanted to sit on the seat and look out, but I have to describe where we are going to her or she barks. If she can see, I don’t have to tell her about it.

Hurricane Katrina was in August of 2005 – in fact, the latest storm, Isaac, hit New Orleans on the 7th anniversary of Katrina. Harry and I were truly worried watching Katrina on the Saturday and Sunday before the storm’s arrival. I tried and tried and tried to persuade my parents (my mother, actually, since she wouldn’t let me talk to Dad) to evacuate, but they were going to stay. I felt I had to stay because they were staying.

But Sunday night, as I watched the weather reports, watched the storm turning ever more inexorably towards New Orleans, I was scared. I finally got a chance to talk to my father around midnight, and he said, “Well, if you’re scared, go.”

I got off the phone and said to Harry, “I want out.”

He had been doing a soldier’s trick: getting sleep when he could, but we were up and hastily packing what we could: a few clothes, shoes, the travel fridge with a few food items I could eat because of special needs, food for the dachshunds, their crates, and, of course, the computers. I’m not techie enough to be able to remove just the hard drives. Neither is Harry. We were both agreed that ourselves, the dogs, and the computers with five years of my writing work on them were not negotiable items. All else, even the library, thirty years in the building and now around 12,000 books, was replaceable, even though neither of us wanted to even consider that.

Neither of our vehicles was really suited to any sort of a road trip. Harry’s was a 1992 Ford conversion van which, when we took it to my niece’s wedding in Ohio in 2002 had its transmission suffer major fluid loss. At that time, it had to be left behind while we rented a vehicle to come back in. Later, when the transmission was repaired, Harry flew back to Ohio and drove it back. My car was a 1987 Ford LTD; on the 2000 trip to ChiCon, it lost the tread of one tire, and had the heater core blow out. It was slated to have some front-end work done the week of Katrina. Since those expeditions, we’ve always rented a vehicle for a long trip. We had, in fact, a minivan reserved at the New Orleans airport for Wednesday evening, August 31, as we were planning to go to Dragon*Con over Labor Day weekend. But a car reserved for Wednesday did us no good in the wee hours of Monday, August 29, before Katrina. So we packed my LTD. With winds already at 50 mph

and the rain “falling” sideways, we didn’t even consider taking Harry’s conversion van, even though that would have allowed us to take more “stuph”. Both of us were afraid it would blow over in the winds. (We replaced both vehicles in spring of 2006.)

The house still had power, and water, and everything. There wasn’t even any lightning or thunder. But the red and yellow swirl of Katrina inching ever closer to us on the Weather Channel, the fact that WWL-TV, which had never, since I moved to New Orleans almost 46 years ago, ever gone off the air, moved its broadcast to Baton Rouge, the evidence of the ever-falling pressure of Katrina left us no choice.

I whispered a prayer for my parents, whom I felt I was abandoning.

I said goodbye to the house I’ve lived in longer than anywhere else in my life. (By the time I was 24, I’d lived in 12 houses or apartments, plus four dorm rooms.) I said goodbye to the three towering pines in our front yard – trees which were newly planted when we moved in, and begged them not to fall on the house, if Katrina proved stronger than they.

Said good-bye to the huge oak tree in my neighbor’s yard, the friend to all the squirrels that Shadow and Sunny love to chase. It was approximately 2:30 A.M. MacArthur Boulevard, the main street which our street crosses, was already filled with branches and leaves snapped from the numerous live oak trees which line it. The rain sheeted across the wind shield, and I thought, “If it’s this bad so close to home, what will it be like on the elevated expressways, the only way out of New Orleans?” We crept around the downed limbs and realized we had left behind something we’d meant to bring: our leatherbound copies of the books by Anne McCaffrey which we own: gifts from Anne herself. Harry asked if I wanted to go back for them. I did, but I said, “No, it’s already taken us twice as long to get this far. Anne will understand.” So we went on.

Past wind-tossed street lights, and onto General DeGaulle Drive. The drainage canals were already half full and the storm wasn’t even truly upon us yet. What did that augur when the full fury of Katrina hit?

At the Crescent City Connection, there were two police vehicles parked, lights flashing, blocking access to the high bridge over the Mississippi River which would be our normal means of exit from the City. We don’t think there were police in them; I can’t imagine anyone riding out a storm in a car. So we went under the bridge approaches and turned onto westbound US Highway 90 business, and came up onto the elevated part.

There were lots of cars parked along the elevated expressway, placed there by owners who hoped Katrina’s winds would prove less damaging than Katrina’s inevitable floodwaters.

Ours was the only moving vehicle.

Almost everything along the West Bank Expressway (US 90B) was still lit. It was a strangely surreal experience, going past the familiar, lighted shape of Oakwood Shopping Center, where I worked at Waldenbooks for 8 years. Past the Home Depot, and then to the bridge over the Harvey Canal. One stretch of Gretna, and the streetlights on the expressway in that area, was dark, power out already. I’ve been on this bridge before when a hurricane was approaching. A gust of wind once literally lifted the very car we were in (though not so heavily loaded) and moved it over a lane. But it was over this bridge, or turn back to home. We’d

I hit the necessary, and then walked through the rooms of our house, knowing full well that all the books, all the mementos of nearly thirty years of marriage, even the house itself, which we bought two weeks before we were married, might well, within a very few hours, be gone.

Wind or water, it didn’t matter. So I said goodbye, and prayed that it might still be there when we returned, whenever that was.

Harry had turned off the gas; he wasn’t able to reach the main breaker to kill the power, but he did turn off the air conditioner. Then Harry and I leashed the dogs and dashed through the pelting hot rain to the car, piled in, and then sorted out the seat belts.

We have harnesses for Shadow and Sunny which lock into the car’s seat belts so they are secure while traveling. In this case, they did not have a seat of their own. Harry, as driver, needed to have space, so I pulled both sopping wet dogs over on me and fastened their harnesses through my seatbelt. I couldn’t help but think of the hundreds or thousands of dogs and cats who had to be left behind when their owners fled to hurricane shelters. Because at that time, shelters wouldn’t take animals, not even, apparently, companion animals, according to some reports. Shadow and Sunny were a main reason for staying put – we would not abandon them. But Shadow and Sunny were also a reason to leave – we had the right to make a decision to stay for ourselves. We did not have the right to make that decision for our dogs, who might otherwise seek whatever safety there Dachshund Club of America

heard earlier on the TV that the alternate route, the Harvey Tunnel, was closed, already flooded.

We made it. Normally from the bridge, you can see most of the Crescent City, divided by the seemingly lazy loops of Old Man River. Now it was nothing but wind and horizontal rain turned silver by the high beams of the car. Unless it was within a few hundred yards, there was little or nothing visible. Down we went to the end of the elevated part, and on towards the Huey P. Long Bridge near Harry’s work, the Avondale Shipyard (now NGSS). We decided that we wouldn’t waste the time checking the Huey; if the CCC was closed, it probably was, too. So we continued out US 90, heading for the I-310 bridge at Destrehan. It was not blocked.

The speed limit over the I-310 is ostensibly 70 mph. Going upwind and up-bridge (uphill), I don’t believe we did more than 30 mph. Over the

I-310 bridge, we had a choice. Follow I-310 and curve back to New Orleans to pick up the I-10 west, or take US Highway 61, the old route, to Baton Rouge, at ground level. We opted for the latter, because I-10 is elevated from the time it passes west of Kenner and the International Airport, for a number of miles as it skirts the west end of Lake Pontchartrain, enroute to LaPlace. We call it “the Damn Long Bridge” and have maintained that a troll lives under it, since more cars break down there with greater regularity than in almost any other part of the area. Given the age of our vehicle, we decided not to risk the troll. Also, with the road close against the south shore of the lake, the wind and rain would be worse there.

trying to keep the windows from steaming up as the water off two soaked humans and two very wet dogs evaporated and had nowhere to go except on the inside of the windows. The speed limit along that stretch is nominally 60 miles an hour. The max we were able to do was 50, and at points, much slower because we just couldn’t see. We didn’t bother with lanes; the objective was to stay in the middle of the paving. Harry drove and worked to keep control of the car. I had my arms around both dogs as I stared ahead into the windy blackness, watching for any obstacle – and felt Sunny, also staring out the windshield, stiffen. I said, “Harry,” and he tapped the brakes, slowing just in time to not hit the first of the three downed trees. We inched around the fallen willow, its branches scraping my side of the car and the roof as we did so.

Letters to and from the editor This should have been included in the Joanne Kephart memorial in the Autumn 2012 DCA Newsletter: Thoughts about Joanne: Anytime I was at Joanne’s, I could only admire her. She showed me such strength through adversity; I would always leave feeling I should never complain again. She loved her dogs, she loved people; and she was always ready to help in any situation as best she could. She would make phone calls, calling any contacts; and she do whatever it took to help others. She did all this from the chair she was pretty much confined to. I was able to help with the breeding of her dogs, and she always said I helped her keep her interest alive. Little did she know she helped me keep many of my dreams alive. I will miss her but I know she is in a better place. She has to be an angel.... She and her friend Kaye Ladd are probably running a dog show with all their many loves!!

I cannot tell you how Sunny knew that tree was there. Dachshunds aren’t sight hounds, and yet she knew it was there before I saw it. Was it a change in the roar of the wind outside that her sensitive ears caught and she interpreted? Was there a change in the smells coming in through the vents that told her there was trouble?

Whatever she perceived, our Navigator knew the danger was there.

Onward.

Another downed tree. This one covering all three lanes of our side of the highway. We spotted it barely in time, the car fishtailing as Harry brought it to a stop. Sunny had warned me, but I was a bit slow to pass it on. The other side of the road was still clear. We were the only ones on the highway. So we edged up over the low, curb-height median and down into what, at another time, would hold dozens of oncoming cars. We flinched as the bottom of the car rasped metal on concrete and hoped no damage was done. Around the tree. More horizontal rain and wind buffeting us.

Now we were at the Bonnet Carre spillway bridge. The spillway is an artificial riverbed running from gates in the Mississippi River levees to Lake Pontchartrain, and is used normally in spring when the meltwaters from Old Man River run high and it is sometimes necessary to divert some of them to the lake. I’d never crossed the spillway via Highway 61 before; we always take I-10 on our way out of town. As we came out on the bridge, we were met by a wall of wind-driven water: the rain

band had nothing to stop it, and seemed to be coming at us head on. Harry slowed to about 20 mph, and we kept creeping along until the bridge was behind us. That was what we would have endured for about 15 miles if we had taken I-10, instead of US 61.

As abruptly as it began, the wind slackened, and the rain lessened to an ordinary “heavy” rainstorm, the sort Louisianans are entirely too familiar with. An orange-red flare lit the night, and the rumble of the flare’s flames reached us over the noise of the defroster / air conditioner fan. We’d reached Norco. We were surprised to see the refinery operating, but they may have been burning off the last of the production before shutting down; all the refineries in St. Bernard Parish were closed down in preparation for Katrina. Given the conditions in that Parish for months after the storm, it was a wise precaution.

We drove on, and past the refinery, the howl of wind and hot, horizontal rain intensified.

Sunny yipped. We braked sharply for yet another downed tree, crept past it, and continued on.

The three trees on the road weren’t the only ones we saw downed by any means. We saw trees thrown in the opposite direction, trees in the nominally oncoming lanes, trees uprooted and cast down parallel to the roadway. It’s a strange and humbling sight to witness powerful live oaks whipped sideways by winds that are merely the precursor of the main storm. Sunny warned us, each time – and ONLY warned us about the trees which were actually a danger.

We found a small sense of normalcy when we reached LaPlace. there were lights in businesses, street lights operating, another automobile or two, even a car heading east, opposite to our direction. We had been ignoring Dachshund Club of America

the few traffic lights along US 61 so far; now we had to observe them, at least as long as to ensure that there was no crossing traffic.

Finally, we reached Gonzales, and were able to enter onto the I-10, which at that point was no longer elevated. As we came onto the otherwise completely dark and empty Interstate, from somewhere, an SUV appeared out of the wind and the night and whipped past us, clearly impatient with our cautious pace. Once on the Interstate, though, we were able to pick up our pace to 60 mph, as we were far enough away from Katrina’s center that the wind and rain had slackened somewhat.

Up the I-10, to I-12, turning east about ten miles, and then heading for my friend’s house, about 15 miles north of the I-12. The streets were deserted; I think we might have seen three other vehicles from Gonzales to the turn-off from Highway 16 to her house. We found the house and crept up the gravelled drive to her side door.

It was 5:30 A.M. A trip that would normally take about one and a half hours had taken three.

We hadn’t been here before; they had just moved into it in January. Harry went to the door to knock; the family was already up, since Dale worked for the phone company and was on alert to work as soon as the storm passed. He came out to the car with an umbrella and helped me untangle myself and the dogs and get all of us inside. It was dry, and cool inside. They still had power.

We were, for the moment, safe. Thanks in no small measure to my Sun-dog.

But Hurricane Katrina had yet to make land fall. For me, for my parents, for thousands of other people – and dogs – in the New Orleans metropolitan area, and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the nightmare was about to begin. !

Bathing dogs in the room is not allowed. The hotel has a building near the back of the property that is for bathing and grooming. It has dog wash stations, blow dryers, some power outlets, and towels are also furnished for the dogs by the hotel.
