THE
COVER
“A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things-a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.” John Grogan, Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog

As the DCA Health Committee Chairman, I am pleased to announce that we are supporting 2 Grants with our Donor Advised Funds. (Donor Advised Funds are held by CHF for each parent club. The money comes from DCA’s participation in the Purina Parent Club Partnership Program as well as individual donations made to the CHF for the Dachshund Advised Fund. The AKC Canine Health Foundation recently reviewed two companion studies that will address key gaps in knowledge in IVDD: neuromuscular and gait analysis to enhance optimal return to quality of life in affected dogs.

Success can be measured in many different ways. It usually starts with setting a goal. If you set your goal too high, you will never find success. This article is intended to encourage those of you who are considering, or just beginning, to train a dachshund to perform what does not come naturally. That is, taking your dog to a place in training that would never happen without you. So think of this not as a training article, but rather one that will inspire you to continue working with and training your most loyal companion to be all that he can be.

Intervertebral Disk Disease Acorn Grants Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) is a major health concern for several breeds, including the Dachshund, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Clumber Spaniel, French Bulldog, German Pinscher and Pekingese. IVDD occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column either bulge or burst (herniate) into the spinal cord space. Bulging discs compress nerves of the spinal cord and nerve impulses are not able to transmit their signals to
the final destination in the limb muscles, bladder and other critical tissues. If the damage is severe enough, paralysis and loss of bladder and bowel control can occur. The AKC Canine Health Foundation recently reviewed two companion studies that will address key gaps in knowledge in IVDD: neuromuscular and gait analysis to enhance optimal return to quality of life in affected dogs. These proof‐of‐principle studies will develop technological advances in assessment of IVDD using computer modeling and kinematic (gait) analysis. The expected deliverables will be the establishment of methodology that will allow clinicians to provide optimized guided therapy Dachshund Club of America

and support patient assessments in clinical trials for novel treatments and therapeutics. Both grants were deemed to be excellent and of high scientific merit by our grant committee. 2139: Development of a Neuromusculoskeletal Computer Simulation Gait Model to Characterize Functional Recovery in Dogs with Intervertebral Disk Herniation PI: Gina Bertocci, PhD, PE, Professor and Endowed Chair, Bioengineering, University of Louisville; Co‐Investigator: Gwendolyn J. Levine, DVM, DACVP, Texas A&M University Intervertebral disk herniation (IVDH) leads to spinal cord injury (SCI) in dogs. The most
commonly affected breed is the Dachshund, of which 19% develop IVDH. IVDH compresses the spinal cord and can lead to paralysis, incontinence, reduced quality of life, permanent neurological deficits and secondary conditions. Dogs that receive decompressive surgery (standard of care) and rehabilitation immediately following IVDH may regain the ability to walk. Certain aspects of recovery, such as muscle activation patterns, are not clearly understood and play a pivotal role in whether dogs regain full function of their limbs. Scientists know that neurologic disruption following IVDH alters muscle recruitment strategies leading to compensatory changes in muscle function post‐injury. An improved understanding of muscle activation during walking following IVDH‐associated SCI is paramount to developing strategies to enable full recovery. The goal of Dr. Bertocci’s study is to characterize individual muscle activation patterns during walking. Her research group is responsible for development of landmark computer simulation techniques that have transformed our understanding of Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease. She will now apply this successful methodology to IVDD and assess muscle function in: 1) a healthy Dachshund, 2) a Dachshund with moderate IVDH‐associated SCI following surgical decompression at multiple time points during recovery. Proof‐of‐principle computer models will be developed based on medical imaging, and hind‐limb motion, ground reaction forces, and body weight support provided during walking. They will characterize differences in hind‐limb motion and muscle activation patterns during walking between the healthy dog and dog with SCI, as well as differences in the dog with SCI throughout recovery. Their outcomes will enhance understanding of functional recovery following surgical treatment of IVDH, which will provide a foundation for improved clinical decision making regarding treatment options and investigating future therapeutic interventions. 2141: Describing the Kinetic and Kinematic Recovery of Dachshunds with Spinal Cord Injury PI: Gwendolyn J. Levine, DVM, DACVP Texas A&M University; Co‐Investigator: Gina Bertocci, PhD, PE, Professor and Endowed Chair, Bioengineering, University of Louisville Intervertebral disk herniation (IVDH) is common in dogs and results in injury by compressing and bruising the spinal cord. The most frequently affected breed is the Dachshund, with as many as 19% of
Dachshunds developing IVDH. Effects of IVDH include paralysis, paresis, incontinence, reduced quality of life, and permanent neurological disabilities; these facets of injury place a tremendous burden on caregivers. Traditionally, qualitative scoring systems have been used to determine injury severity, recovery, and identify if therapies are effective. More recently, computerized gait assessment (kinematics) has been applied to dogs with IVDH. These studies have examined dogs at single time points and suggest that kinematics is more sensitive than traditional scoring in detecting changes in gait. The goal of Dr. Levine’s research is to characterize gait recovery in Dachshunds with IVDH using kinematics. She will utilize dogs with moderate and severe injury to capture the spectrum of dysfunction and recovery that occurs following injury. All dogs will receive spinal decompression surgery (standard) and be assessed at 5 time points: pre‐surgery and 7, 14, 30 and 90 days post‐surgery. Information will be compared to the gait of healthy Dachshunds. This work is novel based on the quantitative, kinematic and longitudinal characterization of locomotion in healthy and spinal cord injured Dachshunds. The major outcomes will be: 1) an enhanced understanding of natural recovery post‐IVDH; 2) improved clinical decision making with respect to treatment options; 3) identification of effective assessment parameters; and 4) creation of a baseline for future clinical trials assessing therapies.! THERAPY a
DOG
WIN-WIN-WIN proposition
Written by Cris Lewis, with input from Carolyn Henry and John & Kathy Gallun
The opportunity for a three-way win when working with our dogs is rare, but teaming up with your Therapy Dog is definitely one. First WIN: for the people the team visits. A Therapy Dog provides comfort, support and animal companionship to people who need or want it – often the people visited are complete strangers to the dog. Carolyn Henry has been visiting with her Dachshund, Snowy, for three years. She noted that the Therapy Dog visits help the specific patient, but also was surprised to see how much her dog helped family members and staff. Being able to brighten the day of a someone who is lonely or a hospice patient has a lasting effect. Second WIN: for the actual dog who is doing the visiting. A Therapy Dog is often well-socialized, but the random and often unknown environments and people they will encounter provide even more socialization opportunities. Some of my Therapy Dogs have also been conformation and performance dogs. The bond created with the handler becomes stronger, even more intrinsic, and communication between handler and Therapy Dog will become very body-language dependent. The trust between the dog and the handler becomes automatic. The Therapy Dog gives a lot of themselves, but they do enjoy meeting and connecting with new people. Third WIN: for the human handler. The joy of giving your time and your dog to those who need it is immeasurable. In short, it is a good feeling! John & Kathy Gallun have volunteered with their two Therapy Dogs for several years at a hospital in Milwaukee,Wisconsin – they found it rewarding to watch reactions from patients when the Dachshunds came to visit. So what is a Therapy Dog? They are calm, gentle, polite, eventempered, well-socialized, and can be directed using positive reinforcement by an experienced handler. True Therapy Dogs are registered through a national organization that has tested the human and dog team on many items related to temperament, handler skills and environmental challenges. Many ask if a Therapy Dog must have obedience training. The answer to that question is “no.” While some basic obedience training can help a potential Therapy Dog, obedience does not teach temperament. The dog either has the right temperament or it does not. continued on next page...

Winter, 2014
THERAPY DOG continued from page 9... To further illustrate this point, some rescued dogs from very poor beginnings can be wonderful Therapy Dogs because they have the right, easy-going temperament. Then there are beautiful show champions with tons of performance (including obedience ) titles that just don’t want to interact with complete strangers. That does not make them a bad dog, just not a Therapy Dog. They would rather hang out with their own human. There are many well-documented benefits that result from Therapy Dog visits: * reduced blood pressure * increased levels of serotonin and other “feel good” hormones * decreased levels of stress hormones (cortisol) * welcome change in routine * distraction Young students practicing their reading skills become more confident when a dog is “listening” as they sit quietly in the reader’s lap. College students easily talk about what might be stressing them as they pet a Therapy Dog. The possibilities and impact are endless! AKC has now enhanced the Therapy Dog titling options, but the first step is to get a Therapy Dog team tested and evaluated, and then registered with a national Therapy Dog organization. Keep in mind that Therapy Dog visits are a team effort between the human handler and the dog. While there is a strong feeling of satisfaction and giving back, it takes a lot of time and willingness to stick to the commitment of volunteering with a Therapy Dog. Visits themselves can be an hour or several hours, with multiple people involved. There are opportunities in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, funerals, grief groups,
assisted living facilities, hospice, courtrooms, airports and college campuses --- to list a few. A dog must be groomed and prepped to go on visits, and the handler must be very aware of the environment that the dog encounters. Therapy Dog volunteering looks “easy” on the surface, but there is so much occurring on the part of the dog and the handler. The pay-off is immense for all involved, making it a WIN-WIN-WIN situation! About the authors – Cris has had five Therapy Dogs, handling teams for 13 years. She is also a Tester/Observer for Therapy Dogs Inc. John & Kathy and Carolyn and Cris’ dogs visit school reading programs, hospitals, assisted living facilities, grief camps, college campuses and hospice patients. They are all members of the Badger Dachshund Club in Wisconsin.!
DCA is seeing an increase in late filing fines levied by AKC due to club’s late submission of event applications and/or judge’s panels. These late fees incur when a local club hosting an event under the DCA banner is late in submitting the paperwork to AKC. When this happens, AKC puts a hold on any event requests from DCA until said fine is paid. Late application submission and subsequent fines reflect poorly on DCA. Therefore, beginning immediately, any club hosting a DCA event that incurs a late filing fee will not only pay the AKC fine, but will also pay a $50.00 fine to DCA. If there is a second offense from the same club, the DCA fine increases to $100.00. A third offense by a club will result in a $150.00 fine, plus the privilege to host a DCA event will be revoked until the offending club requests and receives DCA Board approval to once again hold DCA events. The Board fervently hopes no club will experience these consequences. Ideally, all clubs will take the responsibility of hosting DCA events seriously and will get all paperwork in to AKC on time.
LEGISLATIVE NEWS OCTOBER 2014 We had a victory in North Carolina this summer. I want to thank all of you who live in North Carolina and who “stepped up to the plate” to oppose the NC House proposed legislation and also to oppose the transfer of animal protection from the NC Department of Agriculture. As the Governor and House Speaker were pushing this legislation, it makes this a major victory for those in the Sport of Dogs, and a major defeat for the HSUS State Director and the animal rights people in the state. But the fight isn’t over, as we all know, the animal rights agenda will be back.
As I write this, animal rights activists in Chattanooga TN are pushing the City Council to pass anti-breeder ordinances. When this came to my attention, I contacted the Show Chair for 2015, Robert Schwalbe, and the 2015 Show Chair for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America and asked both to contact the Choo Choo and express our opposition to the proposed ordinances. Both stepped forwarded, and Robert also contacted the Convention Bureau. At their request, we have been working with the Convention Bureau preparing information for the Bureau to present to the City Council opposing the proposed ordinances. Both the Choo Choo and the Convention Bureau understand that parent Clubs will not want to do their Nationals in a City that is anti-breeder. According to the Convention Bureau, since 2008, National Specialties have put Five Million Dollars into the economy in Chattanooga. As we have stated Dachshund Club of America

many times before, the monetary impact that dog shows have on a local economy is something we need to stress to officials. There are other areas of the country we are working on at this time, mandatory/spay neuter and breeder license seem to be the rage. Again, please monitor your local ordinances and proposed ordinances. You can’t have an influence on what is proposed in your area, if you are unaware of what your City or County is planning. Local ordinances will harm us more than anything proposed in Washington. I will be attending the NAIA Conference in Orlando, Florida next month, and will do a report on the Conference for the next newsletter. Please let me if you need any assistance. DCA HEALTH & WELFARE TRUST FUND DONOR REPORT
T
he Officers and Board of Directors of the DCA Health & Welfare Trust Fund thank the generous donors who have made contributions in support of the fund’s goals of promoting education and research aimed at eliminating health and genetic problems within the breed. The majority of donations continue to be given by individuals in memory of or in honor of special humans and canines — however, other kinds of gifts are always welcome. Instead of just making a purchase from Amazon, make that purchase through AmazonSmile (use smile.amazon.com) and designate the DCA Health &Welfare Trust Fund as the charitable organization of your choice. The Trust Fund will then receive a donation from Amazon amounting to 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. And don’t forget to use Google’s Goodshop, Goodsearch and Gooddining to benefit the Trust Fund. If your company matches gifts made to non-profits and charities, please be sure to list the DCA Health & Welfare Trust Fund as a “match recipient” when you designate your donations for the year. It’s also very important to have the Trust Fund listed as a memorial recipient in your obituary and/or to remember the Trust Fund in your will as these gifts are ones which truly “live on” and have an ongoing impact. As you can see below, this year the Trust Fund was notified that a long time dachshund owner has named the Trust Fund as a beneficiary of her estate. The Trust Fund continues to reimburse shipping costs to individuals who send blood and tissue samples to Breen Lab for use in the hemangiosarcoma research project being carried out there, so please participate in this project if the occasion arises and encourage others to do so. Bred by Anne Schmidt and co-owned by Barb Koch and Anne Schmidt Magic is happy to join her litter-mates Stella, Trooper and Houdini as VC title holders! Having four siblings earn their VC is more than we could ever dream of..... We are so proud of this special girl, she has a special energy and excitement to all that she does. I cannot think of one thing she does not like to do, and she gives it her all with each adventure. Most importantly, she has proven to be an excellent producer with several Champion offspring and more coming up. Bred to Ch. Clipper North Wind she has Blaze, Fergie and Molly in the ring, and bred to GCh. Hundeleben Queen's Armada she has Colby, Tally and Quincy in the ring.
Good job Magic!!

THREE FOR ALL
HARVEST MOON CLASSIC OCTOBER 3-12, 2014 contributed by Cheri Faust
For the third consecutive year, Badger Dachshund Club, Minnesota Dachshund Club, Dachshund Club of the Great Lakes and Madison Area Dachshund Club came together to present the Harvest Moon Classic. AKC events included eight field trials, two earthdog tests and a CGC test, which were held over the course of ten days at the Northern Illinois Beagle Club in Roscoe, Illinois. But the Harvest Moon Classic is so much more… A TYPICAL FIELD TRIAL DAY After a hot breakfast, everyone gathered for a group picture, followed by a short skit by those Northwood legends, Ole and Lena (or their good friend Sven). Field marshal volunteers were presented with imprinted travel tumblers coordinated to the “color of the day” (donated by Patsy Leonberger) to thank them for the important role they play in the field. Roll call and bracing were taken care of in short order before heading to the field. The total entry for the eight trials was 727, with the Open Dog stake averaging 19 entries, the Open Bitch stake averaging 20 entries, the FC Dog stake averaging 26 entries, and the FC Bitch stake averaging 25 entries. The weather the first four days was cool with occasional light precipitation. This cleared off early in the week and the rest of the days were clear with sunshine and mild temperatures. Entries closed at 8:00 a.m., and awards were ready to be presented between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. Rosettes were presented by the judges, along with prizes including Rite in the Rain notebooks and pens, Popware bowls with water bottle holders, French snap leads, Harvest Moon logo tote bags, and the piece de resistance – Shawn Nies’s Wash & Zip dog beds (retail value over $50!). Absolute was held four of the eight days, and winners took home a Copenhaven plate, an etched glass picture frame from the Jean Jasinsky Memorial Trophy Fund, and a Wash & Zip dog bed appliquéd in the Harvest Moon theme. In the words of one exhibitor, “the prizes were to die for! The Piano Sven’s down at the feed store and runs across Ole. Sven says, “Hey der Ole, good to see ya! How’ve you been doin’ der?” Ole answers, “Fine.” Sven asks, “And what about your wife, I haven’t seen Lena in awhile. How’s she doing,?” Ole answers, “Fine.” Sven says, “I heard you bought her a piano, didn’t ya now? That must be real fine. How’d she like it?” Ole answers, “Fine. But I sold the piano and bought a clarinet.” Sven says in surprise, “A clarinet? Why would you give her a clarinet instead of a piano?” Ole glares at Sven a bit, then says, “Uff da. Cuz with dat der clarinet, she can’t sing!” TUESDAY: The Minnesota Dachshund Club held Earthdog tests on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The morning test had 18 IQ entries (1 pass), 21 JE entries (no passes), 8 SE entries (2 passes) and 3 ME entries (no passes). The afternoon test had 7 IQ entries (2 passes), 15 JE entries
(no passes), 7 SE entries (2 passes), 5 ME entries (1 pass) and 1 EE entry (1 pass). Following the Earthdog tests, Linda Snyder gave a two‐hour hands‐on seminar on field grooming the Wirehaired Dachshund. With Linda’s help, the participant’s left proud of their good looking dogs. The grooming seminar concluded with a wine and cheese reception open to everyone. Tuesday evening, Kathy Johnson and the Minnesota Dachshund Club hosted an Italian Buffet, catered by Anna Maria’s, for about 40 people. WEDNESDAY: The weather didn’t disappoint the 20‐or‐so sky watchers that came out to see the total eclipse of the full moon in the clear wee hours of the morning. Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Irish Coffees were served in the clubhouse with a continental breakfast. For those that stayed up, there were pumpkins for carving. Some of the more creative designs included a Dachshund chasing a rabbit, and a tenpoint buck! Pam Bethke conducted Canine Good Citizen tests in the afternoon, followed by a highly competitive Scavenger Hunt. On this “day off”, some relaxed with a massage or pedicure at one of the nearby spas, while others made a trip to the Laundromat. With all of the stores and services nearby, there was something for everyone.
With nearly 30 overnight camping units, and hotels within minutes of the grounds, exhibitors were able to spend a great deal of time together. Whether it was an impromptu potluck supper in the clubhouse, an evening spent by the bonfire (complete with s’mores), or participating in a game of Field Trial Trivial Pursuit, the Harvest Moon Classic was a great way to spend time with old friends and make new ones. The grounds were available each evening after awards for practice until sunset. With abundant rabbits and good cover, the field was nearly as busy in the evenings as it was during the day. Many of those that trained saw the results during the award ceremonies! Two raffles were held to help maintain the grounds and keep them available for Dachshund field trialing. Sherry Ruggieri did a fabulous job organizing donated items (much of which she donated herself) into baskets that were treasure troves of goodies. About 30 baskets were raffled each Saturday. Phil and Sherry Ruggieri also donated a beautiful 40˝ x 36˝ Victorian‐themed oil on canvas painting of a Dachshund with a custom 8” antiqued frame for a special raffle – Laura Potash was the lucky winner! The annual “Wild Thing” dinner was held on our last night together. I think the folks that were most reluctant to try the venison tips in mushroom gravy or antelope pepper steak, were also the first ones back in line for seconds! In addition there was smoked goose, pickled walleye, sweet potatoes, squash, twice baked potato casserole, rice, and much more. We topped everything off with birthday cake for dessert – and of course, another bonfire.

TRAINING FOR SUCCESS: PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE By Karen R. Scheiner s a rule, dachshunds are not known for their prowess in agility. Honestly, they would rather be following a scent or chasing bunnies in the field! To teach any dog to dash across a yard at their fastest speed, take jumps and run across a dog walk with impulsion, merely at the command of its owner, is a challenge. But more so for a dachshund who’s nose, naturally, is intended for hunting. Success can be measured in many different ways. It usually starts with setting a goal. If you set your goal too high, you will never find success. If you set your goal too low, it won’t mean anything. Success can be measured when your dog earns a title; with each higher title, the greater the feeling of success. Other forms of success don’t involve titles at all. Instead, it’s a measure of where you started when you first began to train your dog, and whether you believe that your dog has measurably improved. There are some goals that you initially may consider to be unattainable; but ultimately, after time, they may become within your reach and actually realized. I often ask people who I casually meet, what exactly do you do with your dogs? Inevitably, they look at me strangely and respond that they do “nothing,” because their dogs are “just pets.” So, does that mean they are destined to lead a life of dormancy? When I ask them if they would let their children just lie around the house all day, they admit that would certainly not be the case. So why is that okay for your dog to lack training? In my house, that’s never the case! In the my experience, from over the 16 plus years that I have been training dachshunds, I can truly tell you that the extra effort put into training your doxie, will reward you tenfold, in time. I have to admit that until now, Chelsea has not been the subject of any of my articles. In fact, until very recently, many of my friends didn’t even know that she existed. Five years ago, when Chelsea was born, as the only girl puppy in a litter of four black and tan puppies, her fate to live with me was then decided. Although probably not the best manner to
A
choose a prospect for performance training, now that I look back, I am convinced that Chelsea’s life is for the better. Therefore I am confident that I made the right decision in keeping her. By doing so, I have learned that the road to success is paved with cobblestones of both patience and perseverance. In fact, I have learned many lessons by owning and loving Chelsea. We started with agility training when she was about six months old. She was initially nervous and not totally focused. I figured that she was a young puppy, so that her fear would soon be outgrown. But it continued. When I took her to classes, she could run very fast and I was concerned that she would run away from me in the training field. I hooked a 20-foot long-line on her, so that I could catch her if she took flight! For the first few months, she learned jumps and obstacles, dragging that long line. Ultimately, with greater confidence in her recall, I felt that she would not run off into the woods and the long-line became obsolete. We trained for over a year; she learned basic obedience skills and agility maneuvers. Chelsea learned jumps, contact obstacles and effortless weaves, but was always looking over her shoulder to see if there were other dogs around. I had trained a number of dachshunds previously, but none had shown so much hesitation. I wondered if this was a waste of time, and if we would ever find success. At that point, my measure of success was in just getting Chelsea to focus and stay in the ring. What I didn’t anticipate throughout this journey, were the lessons that Chelsea taught me! Based on her backyard performance, I naively figured that at the age of two, she would be ready for her first competition. Chelsea had other ideas and clearly was not ready. In her first several Novice runs, I recall that I would set Chelsea up at the first jump. I had done this many times before, with other dachshunds, without issue. In Chelsea’s case, while she was waiting at the first jump, she would turn to look behind her, then peruse the perimeter of the field, taking in barking dogs and all of the ring activity. When I would give her the signal to run, she would cleanly take

Weaves & Retrieves continued from page 18 the first jump, and maybe the second, but then suddenly, before I knew it, she would dart out of the ring, leaving my expectations of a successful run in a heap of dirt. After about three weekends of Chelsea’s two-jump runs, apparently being driven out by fear of being chased, or barked at, or who knows what, I decided it was enough. Although she had mastered the equipment in my yard, clearly the prospect of competing in a public place, with assorted noises and dogs all around, was too much to ask of her. I realized that she couldn’t possibly run successfully with this kind of an attitude. A less determined owner would have probably given up at that point. As a result of Chelsea’s behavior in the ring or, I should say, running out of the ring, I received unsolicited advice from friends and other wellintentioned observers. “Face it,” they would say. “She’s never going to run in agility. She will never get a title.” Their advice was mostly telling me to place Chelsea, give up on my obviously poor choice of a performance dog, and that I should let her be owned by someone else. I pondered that advice and thought about the life that Chelsea would then lead. Would she have an active life, practicing agility and obedience? Would she go on trips and regularly play outside? Or, would she live cooped up in someone’s house, because the prospect of taking her out in public would be too much for her, and for her new owner, to handle? In fact, would her new owner take her out at all, or simply give up on her? Would her life be reduced to lying around and sleeping on someone’s sofa all day long as “just a pet”? The answer came to me clearly. Chelsea would be a challenge, but I firmly believed that we would find success in the end. I now know that the dogs that are easiest to train don’t really teach you anything. The ones that have issues are the dogs that you learn the most from. I definitely think I am a better trainer now, for all of my dogs, having worked through many issues with Chelsea. Patience. The first lesson that I learned from Chelsea is to have patience. They say that “patience is a virtue,” and that certainly rings true in training a dachshund! Although some doxies are bold, many may be fearful, like Chelsea was. She showed signs of this by running out of the ring, and by barking incessantly at the other dogs and strangers. She would constantly look around, her eyes darting from dog to dog, or from person to person, and was not capable of focusing on the job at hand. On the rare occasions that she did stay in the ring with me, her worrying and looking around, caused her to crash into the jumps that were right in front of her. So from these experiences, I learned from Chelsea that she needed more time; there was no reason to rush her into the performance ring. Instead, she needed to be exposed to as many different sounds, people and dogs as possible. I started to take her with me everywhere. The best places were Pet superstores, my office and the mall. I let strangers play with her, feed her treats (that I provided) and pet her. Every public experience was an opportunity for her to become more familiar and socialized. Instead of training just in my yard, I began to take Chelsea to classes where there were lots of other dogs. Although she may have had fewer practice runs than in my yard, the socialization in being around other
people and other dogs was invaluable. If you have a dachshund like Chelsea, it may take another year to get your dog ready for performance, but you may actually start to find pleasure and satisfaction in the progress that she is showing. Rushing a skittish dog into a performance ring can be a disaster: the probable result is that the dog will learn to hate the activity and the handler will become frustrated. Unfortunately, I have seen this all too frequently with other handlers. Then all of the fun – for both of you – is gone. So I learned to wait it out, until I was sure that Chelsea was ready for the performance ring. I watched her progress month after month; she showed small steps leading to success. After another year of training, at the age of three, Chelsea’s performance had improved not only in my back yard, but she was doing better around other dogs in a small class. She was always happy to receive attention and her tail wagged like it was the propeller of a helicopter taking off. This kept me going and inspired me to work more with her. Perseverance. Another important lesson is to persevere and not give up on your dog. There are so many poor excuses that people find to give up on a dog that does not immediately measure up to their goal for success. Proof of that is found by counting all of the dogs that end up in shelters. Or dogs that just sleep in the house all day. Perseverance is what their owners lacked. No doubt, it is much more difficult to feel that success is within reach, when the dog is difficult to train, or not Q’ing (i.e. running clean courses) in the ring. But then, that is the challenge. Would it be easier to give up and start with a different dog? Probably. But then you will never feel the thrill, the “high,” that comes with beating all odds. Nothing worth having comes easily. And so, over the last several years, I have watched people with various breeds compete in agility. Many dogs, even dachshunds, have surpassed Chelsea in titles and scores. Yet I have been steadfast in my commitment to train Chelsea to have successful runs. About a year ago, Chelsea actually started to enjoy herself in the ring. She let loose of her fears. The lack of security was gone. There was no more hesitation. Positive reinforcement and rewards played a major role in Chelsea’s ability to come out of her shell, and to finally focus on the game, rather than what was happening on the periphery Success. I am proud to say that at the age of five years old, in October, 2014, Chelsea did reach for the brass ring. Amazingly, she achieved that goal that I had believed, for her, to be unattainable. She earned her Master of Agility Championship (MACH). The story of success though, is so much more than Chelsea’s earning this top agility title. It is about where she started, and the road taken to reach that goal. If you think of a large carrot growing underground, it may be evidenced only by a tiny sprout above the ground. (See graphic). But by its size, you know that the effort to grow that carrot was tremendous. Growing next to it, another sprout may be huge, but with very little carrot underground. Which one would you consider more successful? Clearly, the huge carrot that you can’t readily see wins the prize. Many dogs have earned a MACH. However, Chelsea’s MACH is really incidental to her change in attitude which I consider her greatest success. She developed a love for agility competition and in doing so, can now focus on her runs and truly enjoy the game.
In writing this article, it is my hope that someone reading this has had similar experiences with a dachshund and may have considered just giving up. I hope that Chelsea’s story will be an inspiration to continue positive training and to work through whatever issues your dog may be presenting. Your patience and perseverance, in the end, will be rewarded with overwhelming success. !

Postcards from the Road by Barbara Teigen
Life changes. Retirement, a new home in a central location, a new (well, new to me) little Class B RV, a pair of young mini-wires plus one 13- year-old mini-smooth and off we go on new adventures in dogdom. I have been involved in most aspects of dog companion and performance events for over 25 years in many ways. Traveling to participate in dog events has always been part of the experience, but this has been a different and fun way to do it. I thought I would return to the west coast for the second year in a row. Last year it was earthdog tests in Colorado and Washington. This year I was going for three weekends in Washington alone. There were two weekends of field trials separated by a weekend of earthdog tests. Yes! That sounds like a plan! Best laid plans, they say. We were off to a bit of a rocky start. I had a pain in my jaw that I thought was just a toothache. Pack some aspirin and go anyway. The youngest dog, Tatonka, went into heat the night before we left. What timing! I knew earthdog was now ‘out’ for her, but hoped the open stakes at the sometimes small west coast field trials would be big enough to avoid combined stakes and thus allow her to compete in those. So, go anyway. After leaving Des Moines, I did a little sightseeing on the way. First was an enjoyable break in Cheyenne, Wyoming to see the capitol again. It was a beautiful day to walk the grounds with the dogs who were fawned over by a bus load of kids on a field trip. On to Rawlins, Wyoming for a late afternoon tour of the Wyoming Frontier Prison. Carol Rowe had told me about this tour which is especially fun because dogs are welcome to join in. All three of my dogs took the 90 minute tour with me. The next day I got to visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit, Utah. Things were going pretty well except for the pain in the left side of my face which was interfering with sleep and just generally miserable. Our fourth day on the road included visiting friends in Boise and The Dalles, Oregon. We were bookin’, enjoying the trip and wonderful weather and scenery. But, it was finally time to visit a doctor and get some relief. A Hood River, Oregon, ER visit at least got me a scrip for pain relievers that allowed me to sleep. Dachshund Club of America
Our first event destination was in sight: Castle Rock, Washington. We arrived mid-day Friday, got plugged in and set up for the Greater Portland Dachshund Club field trials. I had been to this site once before, briefly, but it was my first time entering there. I showed up for bracing with an ice pack on my face to a few concerned looks. But, doing that a few times a day made a big difference in my comfort level. The events are held on public property and have some challenges that are not faced at fenced running grounds, but these were real field trials on real rabbits. In some ways, they are more ‘real’. The dogs are in natural surroundings running rabbits that are not dogwise. I saw no instances of dogs being difficult to pick up as they weren’t inclined to go bounding off and I saw no sight chases. The judges of the last stake on Sunday did cast dogs in second series and beyond as rabbits by then had become very hard to come by, but every dog that took home points for the weekend had been run on and judged on actual rabbits. Our own take was one NBQ in OAAB and a second in FC. Good weekend! continued on page 36...

R emembering L “ ouie” Louie was a once in a lifetime dog for me. My husband Mike and I loved him very much and he is deeply missed. His tail was always wagging no matter what was going on in his life. Shirley and Mike Ray A great dog bred by Shirley Ray, of Raydachs Kennels, which was bred to our female, Ch. Gleishorbach Whistler’s Heidi, by Shirley(Heidi was shipped to Shirley in Texas) and produced two wonderful dogs, MBIS, MBISS GCH Raydachs Playing With Fire V Gleishorbach “Cinders” and her brother BIS GCH Gleishorbach Quest For Fire V Raydachs “Kaiser”. Cinders remained in Corpus Christi, Texas with Shirley and Heidi returned to Hawaii along with Kaiser where he won a BIS right after arriving in Hawaii. His sister Cinders went on to greater honors, winning multiple BIS & BISS, the DCA Nationals and The Hound Group I at The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in Madison Square Garden in 2OI2. These two dogs produced by Louie are now producing beautiful dogs of their own, carrying on the excellent breeding tradition of their Sire. Louie’s grandkids are doing very well and carrying on his Legacy. We are so fortunate to have met Shirley & Mike so many years ago and to have a great relationship with them. As we wind down our dog showing career after over 4O years, we look back and count our blessings to have come in contact with so many wonderful people like Shirley & Mike and great dogs like Louie. Louie, Aloha from Hawaii, you will be missed. von Gleishorbach Dachshunds • Jimmi & Marietta Sakoda Our personal time spent with Louie was a privilege which Shirley Ray allowed us, and a pleasure. Neal showed him as a Veteran at Specialties and Louie consistently won the Variety, Best Veteran or an Award of Merit He was a joy to live with, and he produced Champions of great health and attitude. His qualities with live on in future generations. He was Neal’s buddy and we will never forget him. Neal Glaser and Karen Simmons • Novami During a 2004 conversation with Mike Reed regarding stud dogs with his bloodlines he suggested I speak with Shirley Ray about a nice male of hers’ and what great advice that was. Not only did Louie possess the pedigree I was looking for, but he instantly impressed me with his many qualities. From that breeding came the dog of my lifetime Kate: MBIS, MBISS Ch. Daybreak’s Awesome Blossom W ROMX, the number one Dachshund all coats, all systems for 2008, and the winner of 7 all-breed Bests In Show’ Kate went on to produce BIS, MBISS and DCA winners. They say the proof of quality is the ability to pass it on. Louie has certainly done that. Deborah Krieg • Daybreak Wires The two breedings of Louie to Ch. Legibach Rainforest Crunch SW, ROMX (Crunchy) has produced a total of 8 champions, most of them finishing with specialty majors. The best known, Captain (BIS, MBISS, Gold GCh Legibach Captain Crunch), started his show career by winning Best Puppy in Sweepstakes (all coats) and RWD at DCA in 2011. He was also WD/BOW at the host show, expertly presented by Angela Lloyd. After finishing his championship at the Knickerbocker Specialty he went on to win BOV at the DCA
National in 2012. He accumulated many exciting wins with the addition of his co-owner Sally Sweatt including an “All Breed Best In Show”, a Reserve Best In Show, Numerous Hound Group and Best in Specialty wins. In 2013 he topped the year as #3 Wire per the “Canine Chronicle” Breed ratings. Thank you Shirley, for having offered Louie to the fancy. His contributions to the breed will be seen for years to come. Gina Leone Middings and Pat Leone • Legibach It is still hard to believe Louie is gone. He was my favorite and number one at Raydachs. Goofy Louie, Ooie Gooie Louie and Louiouie were some of my names for him. He answered to all of them with a wagging tail and gleeful expression. He was the best behaved and had the best natured of all the dogs I have ever known. As a professional pet sitter, I have tended to a lot of dogs in the past 30 years and he was the best ever. I was his pet sitter for over eight years and that was the fastest years of my life. He was a grand dog! Hugs and many tailwags, Phyllis & Critters Louie was one of the great dogs in our breed. He was very sweet and special to a lot of people. I loved seeing him in his home. He would wag his tail and his butt all over the place. He was a oncein-a-lifetime producer. He clicked with so many females, and the kids he helped produce were more than just winners. He will be missed always. “He has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.” May he rest in peace. Love for that boy forever, Cheri Koppenhaver I feel that I have been blessed to have offspring of Louie's in my household and in my breeding program. I have shared my home with two of his daughters (one Raydachs), one of his grandsons (Raydachs) and now multiple grand kids of my own breeding. I don't know for sure, but I would venture a guess, that other breeders who have incorporated Louie’s virtues into their breeding program know about his wonderful contributions to the breed. He was a lovely dog to be around and to watch in the show ring. His non-stop happy attitude and showmanship were unrivaled. He is a dog who will be missed. I’m sure I share the sentiment of many when I say that Shirley has made her mark in Dachshund history by allowing Louie’s genetics to be shared over the past decade. Thank you Shirley! I will never forget Louie and how my tail wagging dogs carry his love of life and hopefully pass it on. Sandy Alexander • Livewire Dachshunds, Shelbourne, NS, Canada I first admired Louie’s get when I saw “Kate” (Ch. Daybreak’s Awesome Blossom SW) as a young special at DCA in Georgia. Not only was she beautiful but she was an outstanding showdog’ Fast forward four years anda long came “cinders”. she spent plenty of time in California while being campaigned. Now Emi Willams and I have our own three “Louie” kids’ Each finished with four majors, six of the majors won at Specialties. All of them have the same happygo-lucky tail wagging temperaments. “Kate” has become a truly great producer and it looks like “Cinders” is on her way. Isn’t that what it is all about? Thank you Shirley, for making “Louie” available’ Judy Anderson & Emi Williams • Brodny Schoolhouse

ABOVE AND BELOW GROUND continued from page 32 Now we were on a mid-week break. It was time to move on to our new temporary home, Ellensburg, WA. The drive there was spectacular with pretty views almost all the way including Mt. Rainier. Ellensburg ended up being kind of a home base for us with its KOA being our landing place three separate stays on the trip. It was a great place to recharge and take care of mundane things like dog grooming and laundry. Our site was on the Yakima river. We had lovely places to hike, take a dip in the river, and even a small little dog enclosure to use. I set up weave poles for practice and did some scent article work as well. After a few days there we were off to Moses Lake for the earthdog tests. I enjoyed a couple of trips to Moses Lake when I was working for AKC. This time I was back as an exhibitor and judge. While also a smaller event in terms of entries, this was also a fun event. Where else can you go to earthdog in a rodeo arena and spectators have a grandstand to sit in and watch? The master walk ups have things you won’t see anywhere else like horse stables and huge wood cable spools that apparently housed some critters based on dogs’ investigations of them. The on-site camping was very nice, the hospitality was great, and, as I was getting spoiled by, the weather was perfect. I thought the Pacific Northwest would be rainy, but we hadn’t seen hardly a drop yet. No ribbons for us in Moses Lake. I entered my male, Houdini, in JE but he was having none of it. He has his JE title, but has not decided to play Senior by the rules so I put him back in JE. One thing I did in Moses Lake was lay a couple hundred yards track for my older girl, Gidget. She had not really been herself for most of the trip to this point. The best I could say was that she was depressed. She had even turned down Dairy Queen. I hoped a track to run might perk her up but wasn’t overly hopeful. Well, it worked. She apparently just needed a job to do and this is her favorite. They had a big grassy area where we were camping, and it was perfect Gidget tracking terrain. She was her usual perky self for the rest of the trip after doing her track. We returned to Ellensburg for a couple of nights before heading out to Whidbey Island. I got lucky to hit the ferry exactly as it was leaving. Ah! Now we were experiencing what I expected. The fog was so thick I couldn’t see anything beyond 20 to 30 feet. First stop on the island was at Jean Dieden’s animal hospital in Langley. She bred my young girl so it was a reunion for them. I also was staying at Jean’s the next few days. While there, I had a nice visit with some Cairn friends from earthdog. I enjoyed cooking a couple of real meals in Jean’s kitchen. Then it was on to the Cascade DC field trials in Coupeville. You think the beagle club houses are great? Try Coupeville! This is the
Pacific Rim Institute. They are not roughing it here. Internet service in the building? Yes! Leather furniture? Yes! The fields where they run dogs have ‘brush piles’ all over where the rabbits hide. They have developed a method to get them out. On Saturday they use the regular way of beating on them with sticks. The stick people are here. I got a kick out of that. But even better was the story they shared about a passerby once stopping out of curiosity. They had seen a bunch of people out in a field in dark glasses on a sunny day, carrying sticks and accompanied by dogs. The passerby thought it was a group of blind people on an outing. I was privileged to judge Absolute on Saturday. It was a treat to see a truly fine Absolute run from the OAAB winner and the FC winner. They were a perfectly matched brace running their rabbit from pile to pile across wide open spaces. The winner brought the rabbit out of the last pile and continued on the line with incredible drive and accuracy. We were done. She was at her very first field trial. A Canadian dog bought at a pet store. It can happen – and it did. Sunday’s field trial added a new twist. The stick people were retired and the brush beating was now up to Jean and ‘Bertha’, her tractor. Jean would literally lift the brush piles and the rabbits would scatter to the shouts of tally ho. While it would be an exaggeration to say there was a rabbit in every pile it wouldn’t be too big of an exaggeration. My guys garnered a couple more ribbons over the weekend and it was now time to head for home via Fargo. I took the northern route home in order to see both of my kids on the way. Our luck with weather continued and it was an enjoyable, if long, drive from Seattle to Fargo. I saw one of the prettiest sunsets I have ever seen over Montana viewed from the North Dakota border. We arrived in Fargo the next afternoon and went straight to the dog park that is visible from my daughter’s apartment there. We spent a night visiting her and her new husband before heading south through Minnesota the next day for a visit with my son south of Minneapolis. His first request was to take the dogs for a walk. We arrived home the next day. 25 days. 4600 miles. 6 dog events. Too many memories to count. While we didn’t garner a lot of points and ribbons, the trip was a great time with my dogs and that’s what was most important. It was good to be home, though! !

THE DACHSHUND CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. Board Meeting Minutes Chattanooga, TN Saturday October 25, 2014 President Carl Holder opened the meeting at 9:20 a.m. In attendance were: Carl Holder, Ken Levison, Bob Wlodkowski, Cheryl Shultz, Denny Van Hook, Lisa Warren, Brian Owen, Robert Schwalbe, Anne Carson, Vicki Spencer, Paul Martin, Liz Heywood, Larry Sorenson, Fran Colonna, Kathy Lockyer and Georjan Bridger. Board members absent were Jerry Cerasini, Neal Hamilton and Sharon Carr.
President’s Report: Carl acknowledged this was Lisa Warren’s last meeting before she leaves the Board and thanked her for everything she has done.
Recording Secretary: Vicki Spencer announced Robert had scheduled a tour of the grounds for 1:00 pm beginning in the lobby. She reported a request from DCA member Claire Mancha to make changes in the Dachshund Field Trial Rule Book regarding casting at dachshund field trials was sent to the PEC for review and recommendation.
Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl Shultz passed out a listing of all correspondence received from April to present. Items taken action on were: • On May 16th AKC requested an update on dachshund breed information for the Westminster KC website. It was noted it had already been updated last year. No further action is to be taken. • On May 19th and August 22 AKC emailed notification advising DCA of late filing of paperwork for DCA events. Ken Levison expressed a concern that DCA was receiving these fines for late applications. Even though the offending clubs are reimbursing DCA the amount of the fines, he feels this reflects poorly on DCA, plus until the fine is paid, AKC puts a hold on approving any future DCA events, which effects other clubs. Motion was adopted to fine any club hosting a DCA event who receives a fine from AKC for filing late, the amount of the fine AKC imposes plus $50.00 for a first offense, $100.00 for a second offence and after a third offense the offending club will be fined $150.00 and privileges will be revoked to hold future DCA events until the club obtains DCA Board approval to hold a DCA event. Vicki Spencer will place a notice in the DCA Newsletter so clubs will be aware of this new policy and the Corresponding Secretary will send a notice to each club that applies for a DCA event. • In reference to Claire Mancha’s request, a motion was made to remove the conformation point requirement for the Versatility Award.
Motion failed by unanimous vote of the Board members present. • AKC has requested old photos and breedspecific information to include on their website. Motion passed to supply AKC with a breed history article and appropriate old photos. It will also be recommended to AKC to allow a link to the DCA website.
Treasurer’s Report: Ken Levison passed out the Treasurer’s report. There was a request for Ken to review the Ways and Means expenses and receipts for 2014. Meeting adjourned at 10:20 am for a break and reconvened at 10:35 am.
AKC Delegate’s Report: Larry Sorenson explained the Parent Club of Excellence program. The DCA Board completed a self-evaluation and identified areas for improvement. AKC has requested DCA submit a paragraph concerning dachshund health. Dr. Denny Van Hook will write a paragraph concerning dachshunds for AKC to use under “health”. After it is written, she will send it to the Board for approval. The Board went into executive session at 11:04 am and reconvened at 12:20 pm.
Standing Committees The following Applicants were presented to the Board for membership approval: Kenneth and Carol Fuchs - elected Gay Braunberger - elected Yokichi Takahashi - elected Cindy Gates - elected Cathrine Martine - elected Karen Osborne - elected Barbara Lasater - elected
Special Committees • Website update – Robert reported the new site was up and running. There are broken links affecting anything connected with Apple products. An application from Apple to fix the problem will be bought.
Unfinished Business • DCA 2015 - Robert reported on plans for 2015. The Educational Seminar is pending. Motion was adopted to increase the contribution to DCA host clubs for Welcome Night to $2,000.00. • DCA Judges Education - Lisa Warren will be stepping down as chair for Judges’ Education. The Board appointed Ken Levison to chair Judges’ Education starting in 2015. • Committee Job Descriptions – Carl Holder asked Vicki Spencer to send out job descriptions to Board members who will then email suggested changes. This topic will be revisited at the January 2015 Board meeting. Dachshund Club of America

• Raffle Guidelines – Kathy Lockyer and Anne Carson submitted recommendations for DCA Raffle events. Without objection, the Board adopted the recommendation for DCA raffles. • DCA Hosting Guidelines Revision – Cheryl Shultz asked that the National Advisory Committee start working on revising the DCA Hosting Guidelines. Ken Levison has already started preliminary work and will send his draft to the Committee as a starting point. • Scientific Articles Published in DCA Newsletter: Motion adopted to direct the DCA Newsletter Editor, Lynne Dahlen, to allow Dr. Denny Van Hook to review scientific based articles before publishing, and to write a counterpoint article to appear in the same Newsletter issue, if she feels it is warranted.
New Business: • DCA 2017 – DCA Contract committee will review the contract proposed by Louisville Dachshund Club and submit recommendation to the Board to ratify by email, so the contract deadline may be met. The proposed site is the Crowne Plaza Hotel adjacent to the Louisville, KY airport. The proposed dates are late May 17 – 27, 2017. • Price for DCA bronze plaques – To cover the rise in the cost of the 5 inch plaques a motion was adopted to raise the price to $75.00 starting January 1, 2015. • Reprinting of Dachshund Field Trial booklets – Since the articles can be found on the DCA website, it was recommended to not reprint the booklets. • Request from DCA member, Dave Brown, to make it mandatory to hire DCA members only for DCA National earth dog and field trial events. To correlate with conformation, the Board chose not to change the requirements for hiring earth dog and field trial judges. • Nominating Committee Procedure – The Board adopted a Standing Rule that requires the Chair of the Nominating Committee be a Board member who has served at last one year on the Board. DCA has a current process in place, complete with forms, for our Nominating Committee to follow. Cheryl Shultz will send a copy of this process to the Board for review. • Nomination process for the DCA National Field Event judges – Nomination forms for DCA National Field Trial and Earthdog judges will be sent to all members with their dues notice, and will be returned to the Corresponding Secretary to tabulate. This process will replicate our nomination process for conformation judges. • DCA sponsored scholarships – A committee consisting of Ken Levison, Denny Van Hook, and
This was a skimpy report. This was about the same as the last meeting. AKC believes the registrations are bottoming out, sponsorships are dropping and the investments are saving the day. LLS
DELEGATE’S REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 MEETING Held in Newark, NJ submitted by Larry Sorenson AKC Delegate for Dachshund Club of America This is the highlights of the Delegates’ Meeting; a complete set of Delegates’ Meeting Minutes are located at: http://images.akc.org/pdf/delegate_minutes/Sept ember_2014.pdf Highlights from the September 8, 2014 Delegate Meeting: The Executive Secretary read the proposed amendment to Chapter 14, Section 11, of the Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedures for Retrievers as follows: This amendment is to Chapter 14, Section 11, of the Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedures for Retrievers. It would allow a club to hold an Amateur All-Age only trial in place of their Open/Amateur All-Age trial once every other year, provided their three trials over that twoyear period are Open/Amateur All-Age trials. It will be published in two issues of the online AKC Gazette and you will be asked to vote on it at the December 2014 meeting. This should easily pass. LLS Mr. Sprung gave the President’s report as follows: I have a few updates to share. As part of Responsible Dog Ownership Days, our Raleigh flagship event on Saturday, September 20th, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program. To highlight the important role that CGC plays in responsible dog ownership, we are including a free CGC test kit in our RDO Day Event kits this year. I am delighted to announce that AKC’s website WOOFipedia™, which was launched less than one year ago and to which Alan referred, achieved a milestone when we reached 1.1 million unique visitors and 4.2 million page
views in the month of August. This is the highest number of monthly unique visitors to date. The site has impressively been growing exponentially each month in both metrics. WOOFipedia™ offers content that aims to engage, educate and entertain a younger demographic, one that is eager for information about dogs and the positive role of breeders and previously may not have engaged with AKC. Congratulations to the MarComms and Publications teams for this success. I am pleased to report the number of National Owner-Handled Series events being offered throughout the country is increasing. In fact from now through the end of the year there are over 270 different events for owner-handlers to compete in. In 2014 a total of almost 600 NOHS events are offered. Additionally, all clubs offering NOHS will benefit from the assistance of AKC in promoting the series via e-mails prior to the show. I must report that last Tuesday, September 2nd, our friend and General Counsel, Margaret Poindexter, voluntarily retired from AKC. For the past number of years Margaret’s dedication to dogs, staff and our business has been appreciated by all of us at the American Kennel Club. On behalf of the Board and the Staff, we thank her for her service and we wish her the very best for a happy and healthy future. I am very interested in your experiences and thoughts on the National Owner-Handler Series. There seems to be a lot of differencing of opinions. Please send an email with your opinions and thoughts on the subject. LLS llsoren@earthlink.net Mr. Farnsworth, Chief Financial Officer, gave the Financial report as follows: Our financial information is detailed. I have in front of me about 400 different numbers that I can access, but I wanted to give you an overview for where we are financially year to date. I will be at the front of the room after the next break, and I can answer any detailed questions you want and we will have more detailed information up on the website.
Ann Carson was created for the purpose of looking into options for offering scholarships.

• Request to pass on information from member Susan Botsakis – It was suggested to invite Susan to submit an article to the DCA Newsletter educating and informing members on judges’ tear sheets, Breeder Stakes at Eukanuba and the National Owner Handler Series.
deadline for the summer edition will be extended to May 7th, 2015 to allow time for pictures from our 2015 National to be included. Motion was adopted to include nomination forms in the dues notice. Dachshund Club of America

The follow discussions took place in the committee meetings: There was a lot of discussion about the judging approval process in the committee meetings and the need for more group judges. The judges’ approval process is in process of being drastically changed and will happen soon. It may be completed and put in place by the time you read this. The National Owner-Hander Series (NOHS) is still mandatory for all-breed clubs, if a club is having special attractions being offered at the events. The mandate does NOT apply to parent clubs. The September Delegates’ Meeting is the election for the delegate serving on committee members. These committees were formed in 1998 and are becoming more active and influential in the governance of AKC. I believe this is great news for the sport. In the past about the only influence the delegate body had on the operation of AKC was through the election of the Board members. Below is the membership of the Parent Club Committee, which I serve on. PARENT CLUB COMMITTEE One-Year Term Patricia W. Laurans, Chair - German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America Karen Mays, Secretary - Windward Hawaiian Dog Fanciers Association Betty Jo Patrick, Schipperke Club of America Peter G. Piusz - American Rottweiler Club Two-Year Term Anne H. Bowes - Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America Constance Butherus - Afghan Hound Club of America John P. Nielsen - English Setter Association of America Larry Sorenson - Dachshund Club of America Three-Year Term William H. Blair – Progressive Dog Club Karen Burgess – Greater Clark County Kennel Club Karen R. Spey – American Pointer Club ________________________________________

Field Trial
Fun
Castle Rock, Washington, a few years ago. I love hunting with my Dachshunds. I’ve driven from Idaho to California to compete. I used to drive a Mini-Cooper and was notorious for locking my keys in the car. No one remembers me, but they remember trying to figure a way to turn the car over and shake it. Though suffering with severe back problems I was determined to go hunting. My doctor had told me to do more walking. If he only knew! I had been to a few trials but truly a rookie concerning rules and regulations. The more tired the less I knew. I just wanted to hunt my dogs and have fun. The first day began with lots of heat and few bunnies. I had Ch. Kansas and he worked his way up from 4th to second in a field of 12 dogs according to someone in the Gallery. My back hurt. I passed on beating the brush for the 22 Field Champions and took something for pain. We waited until 6 pm and cooler weather to run the 16 bitches. Ch. Annie ran in an area near a dry creek with a steep bank, and grass about 4 ft. high. Annie went to the bottom of the creek...3 different times as she worked her way up in the ranking. I was about to die. After the third time I asked the judge if I had to go back down there again? No, it was a trial. Annie and Kansas both won a second and I won a trip to the motel to wash dogs, shower, take some stronger pills and get some rest. Would I be able to walk the next day? The second day was hot again, but I could walk. Ch. Sasha was in the first brace and we were casting out. (Letting the dogs loose to try to find their own bunny.) I had never done casting before. Sasha hunted around and down the hill a little way. She got to a spot where continued on page 60...

Hi Members and Subscribers!

Thank you again to all the advertisers for the newsletter. This is a reminder that January 15th is the next deadline and that will be the issue that will be published before the 2015 Nationals. ALSO, with permission from the DCA Board of Directors, the deadline for the Summer 2015 issue will have a one time deadline of May 7th, 2015 to allow pictures, articles and ads from the Nationals to be published in a timely manner after the National Specialty. Welcome Barb Teigen as the new contributor for our “Above and Below Ground” Column! As a Field and Earthdog Judge, and a former AKC Field Representative, she has a wealth of knowledge in our sport. Thank you to Claire Mancha for the years she spent as the previous writer for this column. Be sure to read Karen Scheiners “Weaves and Retrieves” articles - great information with a lot of good pointers in training our stubborn little dogs. And another thank you members Andra O’Connell, Mary Sue Barnum, Cris Lewis, John and Kathy Gallun, and Charlene Shuping for stepping up as contributors and writers for the newsletter. It is greatly appreciated and makes the newsletter what it is! Don’t forget to send your annual dues in, trophy contributions if you’d like, as well as the nomination forms for conformation, field and earthdog judges for the upcoming events. The forms (cards) were mailed to all members in early November. Sympathies to all the families of all the DCA members we’ve lost this year, it’s been another rough year losing many older DCA members who have made such an impact on our breed. We’ll miss you all!
Lynne

Field Trial Fun
continued from page 49 she had to cross over some tangled downed limbs. She put her front paws on the top, looked at me like “you expect me to climb over this?” and she was done. Annie was in the next brace, so up the hill to get her. A member of the gallery was good enough to hold one of the dogs each time. (When the nearest Trial is 300 miles one way, you load up everyone.) Annie loves to hunt and enjoyed the casting out. Tail in the air, nose on the ground through the blackberry brush, downed shrubs and tall grass. We had to run again and again. As a rookie, I just did what they told me. My legs were burning and my back was trash. I did a repeat of the first day, took something for pain and did not beat brush for the Field Champions. (Sorry, I was one of those Gallery wimps.) Kansas ran next. He was upriver from the creek bed Annie had been in the day before. Downhill he went! All I could see was grass moving to know where he was when I heard the splash! All I could see in the distance was a culvert you could drive a semi through! I had no idea how deep that water was so I ran down the hill calling frantically because no grass was moving. “S*#*, I lost my dog!” About that time I fell on my back in a creek I could not see! I rolled over to see Kansas safely standing on a rock, tail wagging, about an inch of water over his feet with a stick through his
collar holding him. I now knew why they should Awards time! A shock that Sasha was NBQ! I be run naked. consider her a red head with blond roots. A judge had followed me down the hill after To my ultimate surprise sweet little 18 lb. both splashes. I could think of nothing but Annie had won Absolute! That last run was getting Kansas. The foot deep water felt really important! What a day! Great weekend; wonderful in the heat. After rescuing Kansas the ribbons, prizes, great food, great company, great judge helped me out of the creek and UP that helpful competitors, great helpful judges, great hill. Again! Knees shaking, hands trembling I swimming, great story. Good pain pills, good, got to the top to be told, “He needs to run good pain pills. I could still walk and for once I again”. (Oh, s*#*!) I got my breath and away we didn’t lock my keys in the car. went. Kansas didn't seem to want to go swimming again but worked the side hill. It was Below: Charlene with her dachshunds: 2 Abs DC a trial. I thought. Sausage Stables Bethany JE, RN, CGC (Annie), I craved soaking in the bathtub at the motel. Ch. Sausage Stables Exceptional RN CGC (Sasha) No, Annie had to run again and as a rookie I and 1 Abs DC Rose Gate Kansas Traveler JE, RN, didn’t know why. I found out she would be CGC (who got to sleep in bed with Annie, Sasha running against DC Helen Hound! Helen’s owner and me). ! had taught me to hunt and been my field Article by trial mentor. Now I was up against her and ANNIE'S full LITTER MATE! Yes, full Charlene Shuping sisters. Guess where Annie went? Down that darn hill! Here we went again, me and my dog back in the creek? She stayed mostly side-hill nose to the ground and tail in the air. It was finally a trial. I called their breeder a number of times during the day to check on points for everyone. She said Kansas needed 8, Annie had 17.25 and each needed 35 total. Those in the Gallery told me Kansas had picked up a second. Annie won a first. The rookie didn’t understand that last run, but what ever, I just did what I was told.
