Historic Dice House Restored! Dade Heritage Trust, Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, the Miami, Dade Historic Preservation Board and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson celebrated the restoration of the Historic Dice House at a special dedication ceremony in Continental Park on August 18, 2006.
The Dice House suffered from water damage. termites and a gaping hole in the roof.

Built in 1917 and the oldest surviving house in Kendall , the Dice House was the original home of pioneer David Brandly Dice. The wood frame structure was designated as a historic site by the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Board in 1989. The Dice House was saved from demolition by Dade Heritage Trust and relocated from 9840 S.W. 77th Ave in Kendall to the 14-acre Continental Park in March, 2005. Dade Heritage Trust collaborated with Miami-Dade County Parks and the owners, Bernardo and Beatriz Junco, to save and restore the historic structure for use as a community meeting and recreation center. The Dice House preservation project was made possible by a grant of $450,000 from the Quality Neighborhoods Improvement Program, allocated through the efforts of Commissioner Katy Sorenson. Previous bW'lers Bernardo and Beatriz Junco provided $45,000, and Dade Heritage Trust contributed additional funds to complete the $540,000 Dice House restoration.
Grace Howard, who traveled from Georgia to attend the dedication, recalled childhood memories growing up in her Kendall home now known as the Dice House. She marveled at the restoration, where old meets new. The inside of the Dice House recalls its history with early 20th century furnishings including a sewing maching, piano stool and wooden roll-top desk. The renovated kitchen, two bathrooms and air conditioning lend modem comforts to the historic structure. Now open to the public, the restored Dice House is a welcoming meeting facility and recreation center and remains an important landmark for the community to enjoy for years to come.

From the President of the Board
Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future We have another exciting year ahead with some great new board members, continuing projects, and new challenges. As president of Dade Heritage Trust, I plan to stress education about the importance of historic preservation, especially the economic benefits. And because the word "Trust" is in our name, people sometimes mistake our organization for a bank. To help educate the public, DHT is adding to our logo the tag line "Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future," brought forward by Bruce Matheson. Bruce may be a new board member but he is from a family with deep roots in Miami's history. I want to congratulate board member Mary Young for receiving the Dorothy Shula Award for Outstanding Volunteerism from the United Way. Also, DHT Advisor Sallye Jude, who restored the Miami River Inn, was recognized with the Mary Call Darby Collins Award from Secretary of State Sue Cobb for her many historic preservation efforts. DHT is grateful that new board member Hugh Ryan survived a near fatal automobile accident, followed by a lengthy hospital stay. Hugh was already an active volunteer with Ruth Jacobs in the Museum Magnet School program and enjoyed showing students his historic Shenandoah neighborhood and pointing out the house where his great grandfather lived while working with Flagler's railroad. We look forward to Hugh's continued recovery. DHT plans to hold four member events this year, in addition to organizing Dade Heritage Days in the spring. The rust event will be on Wednesday, October 4th, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove. You will be wowed, as I was, to learn all about "MiMo," the 1950s Miami Modern architectural movement that was recently recognized with a designated hi~oric district on Biscayne Boulevard. Save the date for our Annual Holiday Celebration on Saturday, December 9th at the historic home of Ken and Amy Sussman. And don't miss out on our Golf Tournament and Fabulous Cocktail Auction Fundraiser at Indian Creek Country Club on October 27th! See you there!

Saving-and Savoring-Historic Places This summer I fulfilled a decades-long dream and visited the archeological ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru. Built sometime during the 100-year-long Inca Empire that began in 1432 A.D., Machu Picchu was intricately carved out of gigantic stones on the steep slopes of the Andes. This World Heritage Site was breathtakingly magnificent, hauntingly mysterious ... and not as old as our own 2000-year-old Miami Circle! It is not age alone, of course, which makes historic sites so fascinating. It is the story
they tell, or the clues they leave behind, or the images they evoke, which give us a glimpse of a different time and place than our own. Those present on August 18 th to celebrate the successful restoration of the 1917 Dice House experienced that satisfaction. The wood frame structure, donated by Bernardo and Beatriz Junco and relocated and restored by Dade Heritage Trust and Miami-Dade Parks, is the oldest house in Kendall. Not ancient by any means, it is significant in showing modern suburbanites what an earlier era was like. Grace Howard, who lived in the Dice House in the 1930s, came down from Georgia for the ceremony, reminiscing to the crowd about old times when the Kendall area was a rural community. Dade Heritage Trust works very hard to preserve those vignettes of old Miami for the future. Our current project is restoring the 1905 Old Miami High School- the first high school building in Miami-and turning it into a community meeting space in Miami 's Southside Park. Hopefully, one year from now we should have Old Miami High restored just as beautifully as the Dice House. Your volunteer help, encouragement and fmancial support are greatly appreciated-and essential-in helping Dade Heritage Trust preserve landmarks from the past that enrich our present and future.

New Trustees Join DHT Board We are p leased to introduce eight new members of the Dade Heritage Trust Board sworn in on May 26, 2006. Representing a broad diversity of education, talent and expertise, they bring enthusiasm and dedication to the field of historic preservation.
Dr. Joseph H. Fitzgerald- A graduate of Miami High and history major at Harvard, Dr. Fitzgerald appreciates the value of preservation as a method of perpetuating cultural concepts. The former chairman of the board of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and a retired medical doctor, he understands the complexities of promotion and the value of persistence.
Diana M. Gonzalez- Past director of the Miami-Dade Offices of Capital Improvements and Facilities Management, Diana is president ofDMG Consulting Services and is active with the Beacon Council and environmental nonprofits. New DHT Trustees Dr. Joseph Fitzgera ld, Michae l Kas hta n, Bruce Matheson, Hugh Ryan, Lourdes So lera and Amy Suss man .
Michael F. Kashtan- Born in Canada and raised in Rochester, New York, Michael obtained his bachelor of science degree from The State University of New York at Buffalo in 1979 and his Juris Doctor degree from The University of Miami in 1983 . Michael has over twenty-two years of experience in construction and commercial litigation and has been included in The Best Lawyers in America publication. He lives in Coral Gables with his wife and three children. Bruce C. Matheson- A member ofa fourth generation Miami family, Bruce has served on the board of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and is interested in protecting Miami ' s heritage for future generations to interpret and understand.
Hugh A. Ryan- As a fourth generation Miamian with an education in history, Hugh has a lifelong interest in Miami's history and the improvement of Miami's neighborhoods. He operates and manages Hugh A. Ryan Construction Co., specializing in restoration and remCldeUng. Hugh has served as president of the Miami-Shenandoah Neighborhood Association since 2003 and volunteers his time to give historic tours of the Shenandoah neighborhood for the Museum Magnet School program.
The Honorable Scott Silverman- A circuit court judge for the Miami-Dade County 11th Judicial Circuit Criminal Division, Scott has worked to restore the historic Dade County Courthouse. He is a past DHT Preservation Award winner for producing a video at his own expense documenting the history of the courthouse, which is shown on TV and to potential jurors. Lourdes Solera, AIA- An architect at MCHarry & Associates since 1999, Lourdes is vice-president! project director of educational projects. She has served on the board of the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects as a director and secretary/ treasurer and as president. She serves on the City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board and on the board of the Miami Design Preservation League. She is an adjunct professor at the School of Architecture at Florida International University.
Amy E. Sussman- Upon graduation from Michigan State University in 1986, Amy pursued a career in the financial services industry which took her from Wall Street in NYC to Merrill Lynch in Miami . Upon starting her own family and ending her profession she has followed in her parents' and grandparents' tradition of public service to the community. Having served on numerous boards in Miami , most recently as president of The Junior League of Miami, she is excited to be part ofDHT. She lives in Coral Gables with her Miamiborn husband and son.

Dade Heritage Days 2006 Passport to History: Miami's Tourism History The two-month-Iong Dade Heritage Days 2006 featured a vast array of events to recognize our community's historic and cultural heritage. Included were neighborhood Passport to History: open houses, tours, historic exhibits, lectures, concerts and special programs at historic l\ljamj路s Tourism Heritage landmarks. Many events were free, including DHT's annual multicultural Historic City .-------,. Cemetery Procession and Commemorative Service, and all involved working cooperatively with a multitude of groups and volunteers. This year's theme of "Passport to History: Miami's Tourism Heritage," included the Women's History Luncheon at Legion Memorial Park, Cape Florida Lighthouse Tour, and the "Saving South Beach" lecture with author Marty Barron Stofik, hosted by The Hotel on Collins Avenue. Our annual Preservation Awards, held as a finale for Dade Heritage Days, honored ...iliiiiiiilliii....____.. outstanding preservationists and restoration projects in the community.
