PIHUA BLOCKS

2016

LEARNING IN NEW PERSPECTIVES ‘Pihua Blocks’ is a set of wooden natural-dyed puzzle blocks, derived from the fundamental strokes of Chinese characters. Each distinctive pieces may be rearranged in the form of a jigsaw puzzle, as well as seperate components to construct your own compositions.

3 — PRODUCT DESIGN

We have always been learning words and writing words in 2D on paper. Pihua Blocks engages learners to build words and see it in 3D. A playful educational toy to be used in many ways, it triggers your senses through its forms and colors, making learning Chinese words a fun process, stimulating creativity and cognitive developments.

ALGAE ABOARD

Year

2015

Holistic Design ‘AlgaeAboard’ is set in the context of canal boat dwelling wherein algae become a sustainable source of new material for biodegradable plastic products used on the boat. Economic inflation has caused the young creative class to work and live on boats as an alternative. In synonymous with the distinctive creative canal culture of the past, their whole life is a quintessential way of doing things that established them as ‘creative community on water’.

8 — PRODUCT DESIGN

Algae bioplastic revokes the preconceived notion and value of plastic being a cheap industrial material by emulating the aesthetic of precious stones like marble and jade. With a combination of handcraft and technological processes, algae bioplastic products can be manufactured on board or off site.

Boat Sunglasses A pair of sunglasses is something we all just need when having a good sunbathing on a fine, sunny day. Deep down inside us, we all selfishly want to own a nice pair of sunglasses and take it for a holiday.

10

11

Basket Stool Tin cans, buckets, horse feed tin and watering pots are the few objects that has been revolved in boat living. They have also been given a lot attention with decorative canal folk art painting apart from the exterior and interior of the boat. Baskets and containers seem to lend themselves into the realm of ambiguity in utility. They can be used for any purpose as the users see fit. Making the Basket Stool is when I built an intuitive relationship with machine and material.

12

13

Boat Slippers The boat is like a private space. Too small to be called a house and too big to be called a room. Hence, a big narrow room. Living on it gets dirty easily if dirt is brought in with the shoes. So, many liveaboards have decided to to keep an indoor slippers that is solely worn on the boat. Not being obsessive-compulsive disorder, keeping a general cleanliness is merely a customary.

CLOCKWORK APPARATUS

Year

2015

Utility & Utopia in An Animated Object This is a love affair between a Cyclist, a Bicycle and a Bike stand. The Cyclist loves the Bicycle. The Bike stand wants to take care of the Bicycle. The Bicycle likes to be taken care of by the both of them.

A constantly evolving sculpture by responding to every time the bicycle is placed on it, the action is rendered in the position of the toolbox at its vertical axis. The position serves as an intuitive semiotics, a visual reminder to the cyclist to perform weekly (when the toolbox is lifted to the highest level after 7 rides) maintenance and care. The cycle repeats after the toolbox is descended to the origin.

16 — PRODUCT DESIGN

When function meets desire, every touch of detail is at the apex of honesty, accentuating a holistic pleasurable user experience. Like a horological timepiece, mechanical components are embraced by baring it all. Echoing the essence of time, Clockwork Apparatus stands as a piece of utilitarian jewellery.

BRIM LAMP

2015

Urban Nomads / Micro Dwelling Multifunctional furniture found its urgency to exist in optimising micro-living spaces of the 21st century. Lightings, which are the most vital part of our living, seem to be coming up short. Brim Lamp rethinks the essential necessity of light by extrapolating the application of flexible OLED panel.

21 — PRODUCT DESIGN

In favour of intuitve tangible control of light qualities and environmental responsive intelligence, the lamp provides smooth tranformation from a torch to a pendant to an ambience lighting. Designed and made for the circular economy, each component is to be disintegrated for upgrades or maintenance. The lamp projects itself as the key lighting member in the living spaces of urban dwellers. It strives to build a relationship as a dynamic character, fulfilling the flexible need of its master (ceiling-mount, wall-mount and stand) through constant interaction.

FOOD-PORN

2015

FUNCTIONAL FICTION / TABOO SUBJECT DAILY OBJECTS Baffled by the ubiquity of plastic food container and its neglected entity, this project imagines a new range of food encapsulation in synonymous to how we interact, consume and behave with food.

23 — PRODUCT DESIGN

What happens when the prevalent sociocultural phenomenon of ‘Food Porn’, sexual fetishes, emotional interaction and desires with food are materialised in the form of design products? The daily objects breathe new soul of the taboo subject, engaging respective prospect users by taking an empathetic and narrative approach to interrelationships between fiction and function.

Goldilocks & The 3 Bears The brief requires us to make festival benches for 50 to 100 people out of recycled plastic boards - Stokboard by Centriforce, weatherproof fabric by Panaz and only to be manufactured by CNC process with 24 Design, the focus is on providing a landscape of multiple seating heights to cater the public, from young to old.

28 — COMMISSION

The design encourages active interaction and imaginative postures as different sizes nestle together to form different seating arrangements. In three sizes:- Large (Papa Bench), Medium (Mama Bench) and Small (Baby Bench), hence the narrative concept of Goldilocks and the three bears. User, in this instance is the protagonist - Goldilocks, going around playfullly trying on different benches.

SOCIAL PLAYGROUND

Social Playground Given tight restriction of the material being recycled plastic board - Stokboard by Centriforce and to only be manufactured by CNC process, a distinguishable icon is suggested for the creative festival while considering on the aspects of material efficiency and functional properties.

31 — COMMISSION

Alterating the tactility of materials by marrying industrial process and handmaking with regard to the heritage identity of Manchester, the proposal inspires playful interaction and sparks new conversation.

PROP / GALLOWAY BENCH

2016

PROP –– Stripping down to its bare necessity, a modular support system is designed to allow flexible iterations – shelving, side table, trestles for table top.

35 — PRACTICE

Material : Bronze plated steel rods and Compact Polyurethane Foam

GALLOWAY BENCH ––

Its design took inspiration from the entrance archway – a significant architecture style possessed by the row of houses. The inverted ‘U’ gives an elegant complement to the aged, rustic timber, providing a soft edge for the arm rest.

36 — PRACTICE

Salvaged from a 100-year old colonial building, one of the few heritage remained in Kuala Lumpur, 9 timber rafters have been repurposed into limited edition benches.

Project

MOON’S BUNGALOW

Deconstruct! This is a refurbishment project of an old shophouse. The client’s brief is to maximise the space, minimalist, clean, simple, practical and cosy with a touch of contemporary.

37 — PRACTICE

Due to the urgency to move in, the project spans 6 to 7 months and all the construction drawings and detailings are hand-drawn. I have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the client, landscape architect, suppliers and contractors on site.

Mixed-Use Development

Location

South Klang, Malaysia

Site Area

2000 sqm

The New Vanguard This final project calls to constitute a sustainable public architectural scheme that will be given impetus to social, cultural and environmental aspects of South Klang. How can the historical memory of an old port town be insinuated into and incorporated with the dynamics of the present in a contemporary manner? The amalgam balance of history and future is deployed with the theory of proxemics urbanism. The proposed program is an agglomeration of resources library, contemporary and historical gallery, co-working studio space, workshop, lecture cum discussion space and a cafe. It is a community resources centre to preserve, conserve the local cultural practices and businesses, at the same time creatives are commissioned to receiving voices for future development of the town.

POTENTIAL ACESS POINTS AND NODAL POINTS

USER GROUP AROUND THE SITE

User Group The site finds itself to be situated in the middle of vast typologies. The design project will potentially be a gathering space that invites and connects all users from the neighbouring context.

Potential Access and Nodal Points Analysing from the flow of circulation, a new potential pedestrain path crossing the site will be introduced, solving the issue of missing pedestrian sidewalks and pedestrains’ safety at the same time.

Sculpture in The Park

The project will respond to the Royal Gallery symmetrically and align to the visual axis of the Mosque. The project also considers unblocked views across the site and towards the gallery.

Aware of taking over the vast green open space, the project is decided to retain the green, maintaining the sense of openness and projects itself as a sculpture in the ‘courtyard’ of the town.
