And it is in this spirit of contrasts that we find the Food&HotelAsia (FHA) Exhibition being hosted in Singapore. The region’s premier Food, Beverage and Hospitality trade show celebrates its 40th year, and led by industry veteran Rodolphe Lameyse, promise an exciting exhibition that is bigger and better suited to meet industry needs. Though not exclusively showcasing Halal products, visitors will find that their needs will be met. Despite Singapore having a small Muslim population, Halal products and services are well established. There is a well-regulated industry backed by a mature regulatory framework. In this edition of HMAG, we bring you some of the firms keen to make headway in the US$2.3 trillion Halal market. These companies come from a diverse range of sectors in the food industry – from ready-made food manufacturers, snack makers, and fruit cultivators, to groundbreaking diary manufacturers and health food makers. That the Halal market is a fast-growing market is not news. What is news is the breadth and range of products that are in development and are coming to the market. We hope this issue of HMAG will give the reader a starting place to find out what are the exciting offerings out there for a business to take advantage of.

RODOLPHE

LAMEYSE FHA2018 PROJECT DIRECTOR

FHA is the largest of its kind that caters to all facets of the food and hospitality industry.

16

April 24-27, 2018

Since 1978

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Since 1978

Q.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Your experience in the food and hospitality industry, and your vision for this year’s FHA.

A.

I have been in the exhibition industry in France, before moving to Singapore early 2014, where I led a consulting company serving the MICE industry. I have been involved in various food & drink exhibitions in Asia. Our vision for Food&HotelAsia (FHA) is to stay genuine to its mission. FHA brings to the food and hospitality industry an effective and comprehensive platform to engage in sourcing, networking and knowledge transfer. In short, everything they need to drive business inspiration for today and tomorrow.

Q.

FHA began in 1978 at a hotel carpark. From such humble beginnings, 40 years later, FHA earned itself a reputation as the most comprehensive premier international food and hospitality trade show in the region. What do you think is the secret to FHA’s success all these years?

A.

FHA’s success is the result of a shared vision created with government bodies, corporate leaders and industry partners to provide businesses and professionals with a tailored programme. It is also our ability to innovate in a way that meets industry shifts, to best serve the needs of Asia’s explosive markets and surging demand. FHA makes sure that the needs for industry transformation are adequately met. To accommodate new growth areas in the industry, the event continues to bring forward the latest innovations and trends impacting the food and hospitality industries. As an example, at Suntec, we are showcasing

In Asia, FHA is the largest of its kind that caters to all facets of the food and hospitality industry. Since 1978, FHA is a magical combination: the event is not only a one-stop shop for both exhibitors and buyers to source from a wide and varied range of food and drink ingredients.

Restaurant 3.0 which will highlight a whole new level of dining experience made possible through technological innovation. This is how FHA directly supports the industry in adapting to the rapid changes brought about by digitisation or implementation of new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and fully automated business processes.

Q.

In an increasingly crowded exhibition calendar in Asia, how does FHA stand out from the crowd? How is FHA different from other food and hospitality exhibitions?

A.

In Asia, FHA is the largest of its kind that caters to all facets of the food and hospitality industry. Since 1978, FHA is a magical combination: the event is not only a one-stop shop for both exhibitors and buyers to source from a wide and varied range of food and drink ingredients; it is also the only place where chefs will directly use the ingredients, the latest foodservice equipment and hottest technological solutions and display their dishes on tableware from the exhibitors.

Last but not least, FHA also features a wide range of international competitions such as the FHA Culinary Challenge and barista challenges. We celebrate the return of the National Team Challenge and Battle for the Lion - prestigious competitions to determine the crème de la crème of the culinary challenge, held once every four years.

Q.

Is there anything from previous year’s FHA that will be enhanced this year? How would this year’s exhibition be different?

A.

First, FHA is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! For this edition, we have prepared a series of celebration and special tributes to the industry. For instance, FHA partnered with Euromonitor to launch a white paper titled “Smart Innovations Transforming the Food & Hospitality Landscape by 2020”. All that our industry needs to know about Smart innovation will be enclosed in this highly awaited document! We are also proud that FHA has grown so much in 40 years that there is now no venue in Singapore that can contain our global show, hence our mega show is held at two venues this year – Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore. On the show floor, at Singapore Expo, we will unveil a new Gelato Zone to answer growing demands for gelato ingredients and machines. Also housed in the same area is the first Asian Gelato Cup where national teams from Asia will compete for the chance to participate at the World Gelato Cup 2020 in Rimini, Italy. One of FHA’s specialised segments catering to the hotel, restaurant and foodservice sectors will be held in Suntec. This move enables us to answer industry’s demand for more space, attract more exhibitors from around the world, and build new features to offer our participants a more tailored and memorable experience.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Q.

This year’s FHA will be held in not one, but two venues - Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore. What are the reasons behind this and what are the challenges in organizing a bigger exhibition?

A.

Asia Pacific, with its large growing population and expanding middle class, is a region with strong potential and demand over the last two decades. This has led to the industry growing at a CAGR of eight per cent, since 2000. FHA, as the leading event in Asia, has not only witnessed this growth but hosted it by augmenting the size of the show floor edition after edition. Today, the show has grown so much that it is no longer possible to accommodate everything in one venue. As mentioned earlier, the FHA mega show will be held at two venues, Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore. So, you can imagine, implementing such a change has not been easy but we are overcoming this by continuously engaging with industry partners, to ensure that FHA’s value proposition continues to stay true to its vision, by always looking at ways to innovate so as to meet the needs of our communities. This upcoming edition will be biggest yet with 4,000 international exhibitors from more than 70 countries and regions including 68 international pavilions taking up nearly 120,000 sqm of space – 25 per cent more than in 2016.

Q.

Among the highlights for this year’s FHA is the Halal Connexion, a collaboration event between DagangHalal and Food&HotelAsia2018. In a nutshell, it’s a platform for Halal-certified suppliers to showcase their wares and for consumers to find out what Halal products are available on the market. What can exhibitors and visitors look forward to? Would this be different from previous year’s Halal Supermarket?

A.

The Halal Connexion will be more than a “supermarket” in this edition. There will be a business matching area for sellers and buyers, dedicated

18

April 24-27, 2018

Since 1978

to connecting businesses and closing the gap, the “last mile” between the two parties. In addition to the showcase at the exhibition, there will also be a Halal Workshop by DagangHalal at the FHA2018 International Conference in the Food Manufacturing track. The workshop will cover everything Halal – from certification requirements to the importance of keeping Halal documentation and records.

Q.

How many of the exhibitors at FHA2018 are showcasing Halal products? Are there special facilities allocated for Halal exhibitors?

A.

More than 700 exhibitors are showcasing Halal certified products, in particular packaged Halal products. Exhibitors will use their own equipment if they need to serve food samples. Both Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore have facilities such as prayer rooms and F&B outlets for Muslim participants. There’s also no lack of F&B sampling, with these 700+ exhibitors showcasing more than 800 Halal food and drink products.

Q.

Some projections predict that the Halal industry, already worth about US$2.3 trillion a year globally, will grow about 20% a year. Do you foresee FHA being in a position to take advantage of this trend? If so, how does it plan to take advantage of this fast-growing trend?

A.

We are already taking advantage of this trend. In 2016, we set up the Halal Supermarket with DagangHalal. This year, we are continuing the successful partnership and to date we have double the number of exhibitors in the Halal sector compared to the same period in 2016. According to the Halal Research Council, top importers of Malaysianmanufactured Halal-certified products are China (US$1.1 billion), Singapore (US$953 million), US (US$733 million), Indonesia (US$586 million) and Japan (US$531 million). Hence, we foresee businesses from these countries and regions seeking certification advice or sourcing for Halal products at the Halal Connexion.

HALAL APPLICATION APPROVAL SYSTEM

ABOUT SINGAPORE

Since 1978

Is No Stranger To Halal Singapore mature legal and logistics framework, a dynamic Muslim minority, and its ability to draw Muslim tourists have contributed to it being a major player in the Halal industry.

T

he words “Halal” and “Singapore” often do not come together in the same sentence. The small island state has a secular government, is famous for being an international trading and financial hub, and most of it’s people are non-Muslims. Many would be forgiven to think that finding Halal food or sourcing for Halal ingredients would be difficult, at best, or even impossible. But Singapore’s position as a global trading hub, its dynamic Muslim minority, efficient administration and logistics network holds it in good stead to be a major player in the global Halal industry. But the city state’s long history of being a trading hub and node of contact for peoples various cultures means that it is no stranger to the religion of Islam and the requirements of the followers of the faith. The global Halal industry has

20 April 24-27, 2018

seen exponential growth in the past few years – from an estimated US$2.3 trillion in 2013, to a whopping US$2.77 trillion in 2017. Singapore’s small landmass of about 720 square km, which has to house more than five million people, has not stopped the country from being a key player in the food industry. According to World Bank data, Singapore imported US$6.33 billion worth of food in 2016 but exported US$8.36 billion, indicating the depth of the food industry there. About a third of the more than 300 members of the Singapore Food Manufactures’ Association are certified Halal. Producing a wide range of products, from sauces and condiments, to ready-to-eat meals and snacks, to poultry and meats, the prospective business is spoilt for choice in the myriad products on offer.

Though only 15% of the island nation’s population is Muslim, adherents of the religion, mostly ethnic Malays, form an integral part of Singapore’s national identity. Its first head of state was Malay, and so is its current president. Its government has lent legal weight to Muslim law when it enacted the Administration of Muslim Law Act 1968. In Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), or the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, Singapore has a competent and thorough agency that oversees Halal certification. MUIS offers Halal certification in seven areas of the food supply chain – from the manufacture of items in factories to the slaughter of animals to preparation of food in kitchens. According to MUIS’ annual report for 2016, the previous three years saw an average increase of 10% per year for

ABOUT SINGAPORE

Since 1978

Halal certification applications. That year alone, MUIS certified 4,016 premises and 40,311 products made in Singapore – ranging from additives, flavourings and ready-to-eat meals, to meat and poultry. The certification issued by MUIS is internationally recognised. Within Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore mutually recognise each others’ Halal marks through the MABIMS Agreement. More recently the Gulf Cooperation Council-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in 2013, extends the reach of Singapore’s Halal certification standards to the prosperous gulf states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This paves the way for food products from Singapore to tap into the US$50 billion Halal food market in the GCC, which imports 78% of its food. “With stringent food safety and Singapore’s widely recognised Halal standards by several Gulf countries and Asean neighbours, our companies are well positioned to ride on the growing demand for Halal products and services globally,” Sim Choon Siong, director (food) at Spring Singapore, told Business Times in 2016. Singapore’s experience in regulating Halal date as far back as 1978, when the first certification was issued. Since then, MUIS has enhanced its capabilities

and not just issues certifications, but also enforces standards to ensure the integrity of it Halal standards. It conducts certification audits to assess an applicants commitment and compliance to Halal conditions before being issued the certification, while unannounced inspections are carried out to ensure Halal conditions are complied with at all times. From 2014 to 2016, MUIS detected 124 breaches of Halal regulations at certified and non-certified premises. The offences included misuse of the MUIS Halal mark on websites, products and signage. Action on these errant premises included suspending their Halal certificates, and being issued warning letters. Apart from the sizeable Muslim minority in Singapore, its location in a region with a significant Muslim population is also driving the growth of the Halal industry there. Of Southeast Asia’s 650 million people, about 350 million are Muslims, and they are a young, upwardly mobile population with cash to spend and an appetite for travel and good food. Leveraging this huge market at its doorstep is driving Singapore’s push to become a major player in the Halal industry. Tourism plays a big role in Singapore push in the Halal sector. Though Singapore tourist arrival data does not include religion as one their metrics, visitors from Malaysia, Indonesia and

West Asian countries, which are Muslim majority, accounted for almost of a third of tourist arrivals. It was rated by MasterCard and CrescentRating as the non-Islamic destination most friendly to Muslim tourists for three consecutive years since 2015, driven by the availability of Halal restaurants and eateries to suit the Muslim palate. In fact, Singapore’s excellent tourism infrastructure and products placed the island state above OIC nations like Bahrain and Iran.

Rida Fruits

Farm-fresh Quality

aximising freshness of quality ingredients is a cornerstone at Rida Fruits Sdn Bhd philosophy in ensuring it makes nutritious products in an everdiscerning market. The Johor-based company is primarily known as a canned pineapple, and juice maker, with more than 35 years experience. In that time, Rida Fruits has amassed an impressive dossier of companies as its customers. Among them include noted canned food’s label Ayam Brand, and fast food chains Kentucky Fried Chicken, Marrybrown and Domino’s Pizza. It is also the supplier to snacks manufacturer Cocoaland and upscale bakery products manufacturer Hiestand. Apart from producing canned pineapples in chunks, slices, broken slices, tidbits and cubes, Rida Fruits also produces pineapple juice and dried pineapples. It also produces coffee beans.

24 April 24-27, 2018

Rida Fruits quest for quality means that only the MD2 cultivar of pineapples are used, a well-known variety of the fruit that is prized for its sweetness. The company collaborate a network of farms to ensure a steady supply of quality fruit for its products. The pineapples enter Rida Fruits’ cannery in Batu Pahat, Johor, within 12 hours of harvest to ensure the freshness and quality of the product. This short lead-in time between farm and factory also guarantees the sweet tropical taste of fresh pineapples are preserved during canning process. Small wonder then that the company’s tagline is “Fresh off the Farm”. The pineapples are canned in 3kg, 565g and 454g tins. Using the MD2 cultivar gives a product that is sweet without the unpleasant sharpness that you can get in some pineapples. Rida Fruits pine sees its product suitable for sweet and savoury applications. For instance, it recommends the pineapples slices as

an accompaniment to grilled chicken or vanilla ice cream. The broken pineapple slices are a lower cost alternative to the complete slices, and are suitable for juicing or a quick snack, while the chunks make a great addition to a salad. The tidbits are smaller wedge-shaped pieces than chunks, and make a perfect topping for desserts. Rida Fruits makes two types of juices. The first is regular pineapple juice, rich vitamin C, comes in 325ml and 250ml bottles or cans. For added treat, it also makes pineapple juice with added coconut water for a cooling, refreshing and nourishing drink on a hot day. Air-dried pineapples is another offering from Rida Fruits. The air-dried pineapple rings make sweet, guilt-free snack that is pleasantly chewy and loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. They come in 500g and 30g packs.

Pineapple Chunks

This 100% Malaysian-owned company prides itself of 100% natural ingredients in its pineapple products, without adding sugar and using nonGMO fruit. Its pineapple products are fat- and gluten-free, and are suitable for vegans. Rida Fruits believes that making a natural and healthy, yet delicious, product will help people live well and longer. Rida Fruits has penetrated the international market, with its products found on supermarket shelves in Dubai, Pakistan, Oman, Iran and Brunei. It soon plans to make a foray into the lucrative China market in the future. The export market is set to be a lucrative one for Malaysian pineapple growers. In 2016, Malaysia exported about RM160 million worth of pineapples to Singapore, Iran, United Arab Emirates, the United States and Japan. And the recent signing of the

Pineapple Tidbits

protocol on phytosanitary requirement for the export of pineapples from Malaysia to China last year has opened a lucrative new market for local players, with initial shipments to the Middle Kingdom estimated to be at RM40 million and set to grow to as much as RM320 million by 2020. And Rida Fruits is well-placed to make further waves in the international market, as it ensures its export standards meet Asian, Middle Eastern and European requirements. It is certified Halal by Malaysia’s accreditation body, JAKIM, and has ensured that its plant implements the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) to maintain production standards at the highest international level. The Malaysian Pineapple Board has also recognised the company’s high standards of manufacturing when it awarded it the “Successful Factory Award”.

Tiau Yoke

Using their Noodle to innovate YOUMEE also uses natural ingredients in the noodles and flavouring pastes, without adding any artificial additives or preservatives, and are MSG free.

N

oodles in its many forms are a favourite in Asian cuisine, and Tiau Yoke Food Sdn Bhd has pushed the boundaries of what is possible with this humble staple. Tiau Yoke’s story began in 1975, when Mr Tan Tiau Yoke started a simple business to make noodles. From such humble beginnings, the company opened a new factory in 2003, which featured high levels of automation in its production and packaging operations. It obtained its Halal JAKIM certification in 2009, with a product range that includes 10 types of noodles. In February 2018, it obtained its HACCP accreditation.

Today, the company focuses its efforts on a line of four products that revolves around the YOUMEE brand of noodles. The product line starts with the plain noodles for the home cook or gourmet chef to turn into delectable dishes. It is made with high-protein flour, and the air-drying process gives the noodles a smooth, chewy and springy texture that discerning foodies insist on. For the busy person on the go, YOUMEE brand also comes in three flavours of instant noodles with a seasoning packet – Sambal Chili Fried Noodle, Penang Prawn Noodle and Thai Green Curry Noodle.

Plain Noodles

INTERVIEW

Since 1978

Sambal Chili Fried Noodles

The Sambal Chili Fried Noodle is an instant fried noodle dish that is inspired from Malay cuisine. Instead of diluting the seasoning paste in water to make a soup, the paste is used to coat the noodles in a tasty concoction made from chilli, shallots, dried shrimp and fish sauce. Penang Prawn Noodle is a hawkers’ classic in Malaysia, and now consumers can enjoy it from the comfort their homes with YOUMEE’s offering. The seasoning packet creates a rich, aromatic broth, full of prawn flavour, to slurp up with your noodles. The Thai Green Curry Noodle is an innovative flavour that draws on classic Thai ingredients. The seasoning packet uses natural ingredients like lemon grass, mint, Thai basil, green chillies, kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk to produce an aromatic and creamy gravy to coat the noodles, which makes for a hearty meal. Making a nutritious and healthy product is an important consideration for Tiau Yoke. It makes the YOUMEE noodles with the air-dried method, which is healthier as it contains no oil than noodles that are fried. YOUMEE also uses natural ingredients in the noodles and flavouring pastes, without adding any artificial additives or preservatives, and are MSG free.

Penang Prawn Noodles

Green Curry Noodles

In a crowded market for instant noodles, Tiau Yoke is constantly striving to innovate and create new products to stay one step ahead of the market and meet the evolving needs of the modern consumer. Going Halal with its YOUMEE line is one such effort to meet consumer needs, as Tiau Yoke feels there is a growing market for healthy prepackaged foods in Asia, especially in countries like Vietnam, Indonesia the Philippines and China. The company also believes that the Halal mark is a sign that consumers can be confident of the product not just in terms of religious observance, but also in environmental and hygiene standards. “With these steps, it helps us garner not only Muslims, but a wider consumer base as well,” the company says. Because the YOUMEE line is very new to the market, Tiau Yoke is looking for overseas

market such as Singapore, China, Indonesia and Vietnam. According the World Instant Noodles Association, these four markets account for almost 60% of the global demand for instant noodles in 2016. To realise this aim of being a leading manufacturer of healthy instant noodles, Tiau Yoke has been actively participating in international trade shows to increase brand awareness overseas, and has registered with Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) to reach out to international buyers.

Healthy Trend

Freeze Dried Fruit Market

BGI move to go Halal is because it realises the reality that it is an expanding market that should tapped, as more people now like to eat healthy

30 April 24-27, 2018

H

ealthy eating is a growing trend worldwide, and the market for products that are nutritious is lucrative – estimated at US$1 trillion worldwide. And eating healthy is often associated with rather unexciting foods or those that are time-consuming to prepare. Enter BGI Marketing, a Malaysian company that was formed last year specialising in freeze-dried fruits, and aims to offer the best quality green and healthy products to the customers.

The firm’s product range for now includes four types of fruits – durian, mango, jackfruit and banana – under its own brand, and is also an OEM processer of pineapple, soursop, and strawberry for other distributors. The company spent two years analysing the market potential of freeze dried industries before entering it and has partnered with reputable local biscuits and confectionery manufacturer Lye Imm Manufacturing Sdn Bhd. It also prides itself of employing a fully automated process to maintain production efficiency and consistency. Its freezedrying technology dehydrates fruit without diminishing the original nutrition content.

INTERVIEW

Since 1978

BGI sees itself as the cost-leader in the freeze dried fruit business, with strong supply chain management in place to ensure high-quality raw materials at a comparatively low cost. And it realises that even the best technology cannot compensate for poor quality raw materials. To this end, BGI has contracted local suppliers to provide its processes with high-quality fruits at the most competitive price, even during the off seasons. Using 100% high-grade Malaysian fruit is also a cornerstone of BGI’s products. It insists that the proof of that belief is in the tasting, and does not use lower grade fruits from other countries. The high-tech processes that BGI uses also enable it’s products to be 100% natural, without artificial additives, flavourings or preservatives, in contrast with most similar products that use lots of sugar and salt to preserve fruits. Its automated processes require minimal human intervention, thus reducing the risk of the final product being contaminated with pathogens, and ensuring hygiene.

“We differentiate ourselves from other market players in terms of product quality. We do not compromise on quality to achieve cost advantage. At BGI Marketing, offering superior quality products with competitive price is our commitment towards our customers,” BGI tells HMAG. For now, BGI’s products are only available in Malaysia as it is still very new to the market. But the company would not pass up the chance to expand its presence overseas. To pave the way for possible entry into international markets, BGI’s products are certified Halal by Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) and has the Malaysian government's food safety standards: Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI). Both accreditations are internationally recognised as marks of high standards of food production processes. BGI move to go Halal is because it realises the reality that it is an expanding market that should tapped, as more people now like to eat healthy.

It also realises that being certified Halal does not just mean that it follows religious requirements, there are also standards of hygiene, ethics and food handling that are also appreciated by non-Muslims. “Demand for Halal food is developing in parallel with the increasing awareness towards healthy lifestyles. Halal certification promotes high quality, safe to consume and ethical products. As such, Halal products, which prioritise hygienic, safety and ethical factors in food processing and handling are gaining in popularity among general consumers, and go beyond Muslims’ religious observance,” the company says. BGI has big dreams for the future. It plans to expand its production capacity tenfold from the current 100,000 units, and is actively seeking participating in international trade shows to promote its wares. It is also open to be an OEM partner for companies seeking to produce their own line of freeze-dried fruit snacks.

Akmal Food

Ingenious Product Give

Dishes In One

M

eat on a stick is a beloved method of eating the world over. There’s yakitori in Japan, satay in Malaysia and Indonesia, kebab in the Middle East, and souvlaki in Greece. But what happens when one can’t decide whether to have satay or kebab for dinner? Never fear, because Akmal Food Industry has an ingenious solution to this gastronomic dilemma – the Sate Kebab!

38 April 24-27, 2018

Formed in 2010 with just five workers, the frozen foods specialist now has 20 staff and the capacity to produce 50,000 sticks of this unique 2-in-1 dish a day. The inspiration to create this dish came to the director and founder of the company, Azizul Akmal Jamaluddin, upon his return from to Malaysia after studying at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Kebabs were a favourite food for Muslim students there, and Azizul formulated his own recipe as he ventured into the frozen foods business. The company makes four varieties of the Sate Kebab –Black Pepper, Spicy and Briyani flavoured chicken sate kebab, and original flavour beef sate kebab. Is also makes mini chicken burger kebabs in Black Pepper and Spicy flavours. Akmal Food makes a premium product by using 100% fresh meat and without added MSG. To them, their sate kebabs are a healthier alternative to the sausages, which are prevalent in the market, and are suitable for all sorts of dishes that the creative cook can imagine.

INTERVIEW

Since 1978

Akmal Food makes a premium product by using 100% fresh meat and without added MSG “We have a special recipe that uses fresh chicken breast meat only. It is blended with original spices. No MSG, artificial flavourings or colouring are used. This is completely different from sausages, nuggets and other processed foods on the market,” Akmal Food tells HMAG on why the consumer should choose their products. Akmal Food is certified Halal by Malaysia Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) and its processes comply with the Malaysian government's food safety standards: Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI), both of which are international marks of quality and hygiene.

Going Halal is an important part of Akmal Food strategy, as the company feels that it is important to give Muslim consumers peace of mind and confidence that its products are permissible under religious strictures. Halal certification also opens up its products to a larger market that is not confined to Muslims. For now Akmal Food products are only available in Malaysia, but it is looking to explore opportunities overseas. Despite being widely available in Malaysian retail outlets, Akmal Food has a unique grassroots marketing and distribution network that allows it break into new markets. This network now comprises 21 “Superstar” wholesaler agents and hundreds of marketing agents distributing Akmal Food frozen wares nationwide. Testimonials from successful agents show a lucrative trade, where sales are brisk.

Apart from selling frozen foods, Akmal Food has also devised Sate Kebab kiosks to allow small-time entrepreneurs to move up the value chain, from just re-selling frozen foods to preparing the product for customers needing food on the go. The budding vendor is provided all that is needed to open a kiosk at the location of their choice, including canopies, tables and chairs, a portable grille to cook the sate kebabs, cooler boxes and the tools and equipment needed to cook and serve the prepared product. Akmal Food is a relative new-comer to food industry, but its young and energetic team is ager to break new ground and grow. “We produce a healthy premium product at an affordable price and suitable for all r ages. Our dedicated marketing team is active throughout East and Peninsular Malaysia, and they work together one big happy family,” the company says.

Farm to Factory Control

Quality Assurance for

M

aintaining quality of a product can be challenging endeavour if multiple supply chains, which could span the globe, are involved. The constituent components of a product can come from different suppliers with differing levels of capacity, so quality control can be a juggling act. For Rompin Integrated Pineapple Industries Sdn Bhd (RIPI), maintaining quality means controlling its product from farm to product. The company was incorporated in 2012, and manages 5,000 acres of pineapple plantations in Rompin district, located in Malaysia’s east coast state of Pahang. It plants the MD2 cultivar of pineapples, which are famed for their sweetness. It aims to be the largest fresh producer of MD2 pineapples and downstream processes in the region.

40 April 24-27, 2018

RIPI prides itself of its involvement in the entire value chain of pineapple cultivation and product manufacturing – from research and development of saplings and planting, to the upstream and downstream activities, as well as the marketing and distribution of fresh pineapples and related products. Its seedling technology is fully audited by the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Today, it is one of the key MD2 pineapple suppliers in the domestic market and has successfully delivered Rompine Pineapple to Asia and the Middle East. The company grows non-GMO pineapples, which are harvested by hand and then immediately processed in the shortest time possible to maintain optimum freshness.

INTERVIEW

Since 1978

Apart from growing and supplying fresh MD2 pineapples, RIPI makes dehydrated pineapple, jackfruit and banana snacks that are processed direct from farm, 100% natural and made without preservatives or added sugar. Its dehydrated pineapple snacks and fresh pineapples are marketed under the “Rompine” brand, which was introduced in 2015. RIPI is also excited to announce that it will introduce two new products at the end of 2018, NFC and concentrated pineapple juices. Both are 100% natural and are made without added sugar so that consumers can enjoy the fresh pineapple taste of the Rompine brand. RIPI exports 70% fresh fruit and the other 30% comprises processed products such as fruit snacks and juices. RIPI products are exported to Japan, China and the Middle East, and the company is eyeing markets in the US, Canada and Europe for expansion in the near future. It has the certifications to boost its ambitions. Apart for the Halal accreditation that RIPI obtained last year, the company has a slew of best

practices in the industry, like the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry (MoA) in 2014, the Malaysian government’s MeSTI scheme for the food industry, and the HACCP in 2018. RIPI’s cultivation processes has been approved by the Malaysian Department of Agriculture as an industry champion for land rehabilitation, while its farming and packaging practices are compliant with the Malaysian Good Agriculture Practice (MyGAP). It also adopts the Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures (SPS). RIPI believes its Halal accreditation is a key component in its operations, as Muslim consumers make up a huge global market that it can tap. Halal certification also means that ethics, hygiene and industry best practices are followed. Despite RIPI’s worldwide ambitions, it has not forgotten the local communities that surround its farms in Rompin. It has been appointed an anchor company by the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), a Malaysian government body that oversees and

spearheads development on the east coast of the peninsula. ECERDC audits its processes to be compliant as a sustainable socioeconomic development project. With this appointment comes the responsibility to promote the pineapple industry in Malaysia while bringing socio-economic development to local communities. Its flagship corporate social responsibility programme is bringing education, employment, and training opportunities to the Jakun tribe in Rompin through a special farming programme. The tribe traditionally ekes out a hard living through subsistence farming, collecting jungle produce and fishing. But RIPI has developed the entrepreneurship capacity of the tribespeople through its programmes. Several villages in the district have also benefitted from contract farming with RIPI, resulting in better standards of living and incomes for local farmers. The best pineapples are sold under the “Rompine” brand and are marketed internationally, bringing life to the tagline “Bringing Rompin to the World”.

HOME-MADE GOODNESS

ndian flatbreads are gaining popularity, not just in Malaysia, but the world over. Good for breakfast, lunch and dinner or even as a snack, flaky parathas, crisp puris and soft chapatis are an ideal medium to mop up spicy curries. But it can be a hassle to make your way to an Indian restaurant when all you want is some paratha to go with some leftover curry. Making it from scratch might be too much of an effort, especially for those with busy work schedules. An easy solution would be ready-made breads, packaged, frozen and ready for the griddle. Enter Asian Food Sdn Bhd, a company located in Johor, at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia. This specialist manufacturer of frozen of Indian convenience foods has been in business since 2015 and has made a name for itself for its quality and integrity of its products. Asian Food has made a reputation for its high quality parathas, puris and chapatis. Apart from frozen Indian flat breads, it also produces several other tasty snacks that can be taken from freezer to frying pan and straight to the tummy, such as Indian Samosas, Bengali Singaras and Spring Rolls. All of Asian Food’s Indian flatbreads are 100% vegetarian and are good with a variety of curries. The company says that some of its products are hand-made, giving it an edge over the competition.

“We use quality ingredients in our products. Most of the products sold in market are 100% machine made. Some of our products are hand made so it got home made taste,” Asian Food tells HMAG. Paratha is a round bread made from flour, water and oil. After kneading to build up the gluten, the dough is then beaten out into a paper-thin layer before its is folded over several times to make a crisp and flaky treat. Chapathi is another form of unleavened flatbread, but is made with whole wheat flour, which is mixed with oil, water and salt to form a dough. After kneading, the dough is formed into small balls before its flattened and cooked on a griddle. Apart from the traditional curry, the more adventurous capathis could try

chapathi with more unusual yet tasty accompaniments, such as jam, cheese, peanut butter, applesauce, or even pie filling. Some people use chapathis as a sandwich wrap for a convenient on the go meal. The dough for puri is similar to chapathi, with the main difference being the cooking method. Instead of grilling on a griddle, the flattened dough is deep-fried to make a fluffy receptacle for your favourite curry. Currently, Asian Food’s products are distributed at several food outlets in Singapore and Malaysia, but it is eager to expand and explore new distribution avenues with retail and wholesale partners. It is also eager to penetrate the overseas market, especially in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

“The company takes pride in employing experienced, accountable and professional marketers and support personnel to create a strong brand. Our sales associates are product savvy and customer focused,” Asian Food tells HMAG. “Our focus is consumer satisfaction. We expect people to do business with us because we provide quality products and we give service on time. We value our customers.” Asian Food is seeking overseas distributors who are in the food business. “We are keen to get OEM partnership opportunities in Food&HotelAsia (FHA), too.”

Wide Product Range From Singapore’s TSL Getting Halal certification is a must for if you want to market your products in Malaysia and Singapore, because there is a large Muslim consumer market in these two countries

eing based in Singapore, where land is scarce, has not stopped TSL Marketing & Distributors (S) Pte Ltd from being a leading food distributor. The company was set up in 2004, and now has more than 100 products on its books. The products range from a line of Kaya (coconut-milk based bread spreads) that are certified Halal by Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), to commodities like black and white pepper. It is particularly proud of its line of Kaya, which is sold under the SINSIA brand and comes in four innovative flavours – the Traditional Recipe, Fragrant Pandan and the more unique mango and green tea flavoured spreads. Its

special Kaya recipe has proven to be a hit not just in the native markets of Singapore and Malaysia, but also among tourists from South Korea and Japan. Mr Francis Sia, 46, the director of TSL, says the Kaya is made according to its own recipe, and offers a unique taste and superior quality. TSL distributes three types of readymade sauce packets for Chilli Crab (a dish that Singapore is famous for), Hainanese Chicken Rice and Black Pepper Sauce. “We work with local chefs on these recipes, and Korean tourists seem to like them, too,” says Sia. But how does a company based in land-scarce Singapore manage to obtain such a large rage of food products? The answer lies in looking to Malaysia to set up manufacturing and agriculture facilities. In Johor Baru, at the southernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia, TSL has just set up a manufacturing plant to meet demand from the local and overseas market, especially Taiwan.

INTERVIEW

Since 1978

“We can keep costs down by setting up a plant in Malaysia. And we find the administrative process easier and more efficient to set up in Malaysia.” Its venture into pepper is based from a plantation in East Malaysia’s Sarawak state, which has a long tradition of cultivating the spice. Located near the town of Sibu, TSL’s plantation ensures quality in its crops by adopting cultivation best practices, and uses mountain spring water to wash the fresh pepper berries before processing it into black and white pepper. The resulting product is of the highest quality and is certified by the Malaysian Pepper Board, which is recognised worldwide as a mark of high standards. TSL’s pepper is widely distributed internationally with a presence in the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Canada and South Africa. The pepper is pathogen free and meets international food safety standards (CODEX) and HACCP certified. “Because we have our own farm, we can control the whole process of pepper production – from cultivation to packaging. Another advantage of having control of the whole process is that we can offer pepper at much more competitive prices than other manufacturers,” says Sia.

TSL is still in the process of getting Halal certification for its Johor factory, but it is eager break new ground in the Halal market as it realises the potential of the market. And it believes getting the Halal mark from Malaysia’s JAKIM is the right strategy as it is recognised and respected the world over. “Getting Halal certification is a must for if you want to market your products in Malaysia and Singapore, because there is a large Muslim

consumer market in these two countries, and we want to tap that market,” says Sia. Looking to the future, TSL is eager to look for distribution and wholesale partners in Malaysia, particularly to tap into the tourist market. TSL’s products can also be ordered online in Singapore through e-commerce portals Q10, Lazada and Ezbuy. In Malaysia, online orders can be made through Lazada and 11Street, while it is finalising an e-commerce distribution channel in Taiwan.

briefs MALAYSIA’S HALAL EXPORTS SET TO GROW 5%, SAYS HDC CEO MALAYSIA is expected to export 5% more Halal products this year compared with last year’s RM43.4 billion, Bernama reports Halal Industry Development Corp chief executive officer Jamil Bidin as saying recently. “We can see Halal product exports increasing every year, and we will ensure our presence as the top Halal exporter and global Halal hub is recognised and acknowledged by other nations,” he said, adding that this was supported by higher demand for food-andbeverage products and ingredients. In 2016, Malaysia’s Halal product exports amounted to RM42.1 billion. “To be a global Halal hub, a country needs to have a complete ecosystem – production, Islamic finance, services, incentives, and support from the government, as well as infrastructure,” he said. He said more than 60 countries sought to emulate Malaysia as an example of a Halal hub, adding that non-Muslim countries, such as Japan and Taiwan, were interested in the Halal industry due to its huge potential. He said the country’s Halal industry needed to be prepared for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0), adding that HDC would be partnering with government agencies and private companies to look at innovation. Industry players should also capitalise on the benefits of IR 4.0 and the digital economy as it would help boost productivity and revenue, he said. Source: Bernama 52 April 24-27, 2018

SUBWAY SINGAPORE SET TO GO HALAL International sandwich chain Subway has applied for Halal certification in Singapore and all of its outlets in the island republic has stopped selling pork since March 21, Channel News Asia reported. The company said in a Facebook post that all Subway outlets in Singapore will serve only “non-pork protein”. This is to “meet the needs and preferences” of customers, said Subway’s country director in Southeast Asia, Sue Sim.

“We are being meticulous and taking the necessary steps to ensure we are Halal compliant and meet our standards for serving quality, nutritious food.” In February, Malay-language news portal Berita reported that the US-based chain was planning to obtain Halal certification for its restaurants in Singapore. In a tweet on Feb 1 through Twitter handle HalalSG, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) said Subway

MALAYSIA NO. 1 DESTINATION OF SOUTH KOREA’S HALAL EXPORTS Most of South Korea’s Halal exports from small- and medium-sized enterprises head to Malaysia, Yonhap news agency reported recently. It said a survey of 141 South Korean SMEs exporting Halal food found that 43.3% of their food shipments abroad ended up in Malaysia, followed by Indonesia at 38.6% and Thailand at 7.9%. The survey was done by the Korea Small Business Institute (KOSBI) between May and June last year. The average export amount of each company was US$1.02 million (RM3.9 million). About 64.5% of companies surveyed said they decided to make inroads into the Halal food market abroad because of its growth potential.

The companies polled cited lack of strong distribution channels, scant information on the global Halal market and Halal food certification as difficulties that they face. Seoul has been negotiating with several Muslim countries to recognise Halal certification issued by South Korea. The Korea Muslim Federation’s (KMF) Halal accreditation is currently acknowledged in Malaysia and Singapore. The Halal food market, catering to 1.7 billion Muslims worldwide, is estimated to grow to US$2.7 trillion by 2021 from US$1.7 trillion in 2015. Source: Yonhap

Singapore “had shown interest” in getting their outlets Halal-certified. “We’ve had a few rounds of discussion with them to help them prepare themselves,” MUIS added. CAMBODIA UNVEILS HALAL RULES Cambodia’s Commerce Ministry announced a standardised certification process for halal food in early March, the Phnom Penh Post reported. Camnodian Commerce Ministry Secretary of State Mao Thora said the rules would boost the confidence of Muslim visitors and residents of the . “We are now ready to implement this, since we already have the sub-decree, teams of experts and halal inspectors from Muslim religious [groups],” Thora said. “If we can implement it effectively, we will receive a lot of benefit from Muslim tourism.”

The Malaysia Halal Analysis Centre (MyHAC) in Seremban was launched on March 29 by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the setting up of the laboratory is proof of the government’s commitment in the development of Islam and will help advance the Halal industry in the international arena. “The Halal certification implemented by JAKIM and the state Islamic Affairs Department (Jain) combines both the elements of Islamic law, and science and technology. It is implemented to fulfil the demands and principles of Shariah, apart from ensuring the safety and hygiene of products. “A high level of integrity is crucial to ensuring that products with Malaysia-certified Halal certificates go through various processes, which don’t only include documents and field-based research, but also scientific analysis at the lab to further confirm the Halal status of ingredients in the products. “With MyHAC, the Halal certification process will be done more efficiently,” he said in his speech at MyHAC’s opening ceremony in Bandar Enstek near the state capital of Negeri Sembilan on March 29. Zahid’s speech was delivered by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom. Also present was Malaysia Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) director general Tan Sri Othman Mustafa and state assembly speaker Datuk Seri Dr Awaludin Said. Source: NST

Sim Mohddaud, a member of the Highest Council for Islamic Religious Affairs of Cambodia, said the council will work closely with the government of Cambodia to control the quality of the certification. “Muslim people will trust on the implementation of subdecree from Commerce Ministry because this . . . has cooperation from the highest council for Islamic Religious Affairs Cambodia,” he said. Mohddaud said there were no regulations before this, and many restaurants bearing halal logos were not engaging in proper practices.

“Before, it was a bit challenging for Muslim people or Muslim tourists to trust the Cambodian market” regarding halal criteria, he said. Mao Thora said Ly Ly Food Industry Co was the only food producer in Cambodia to receive halal certification from the ministry. Ly Ly CEO Keo Mom said she had previously obtained certification from Vietnam. “Halal is important for us to reach the halal markets in Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, or other countries who require us to be halal certified,” she said yesterday. briefs IN RUN-UP TO OLYMPICS, TOKYO WARD OFFERS INCENTIVES TO HALAL FOOD PROVIDERS Taito ward in northeast Tokyo has been providing since late 2015 subsidies to food establishments that invest in Halal status, Food Navigator Asia reports. Under the scheme, the companies will be reimbursed 50% of the cost of certification. A network of Halal certification agencies in Tokyo has cropped up as a result of the policy. One of them is the Japan Halal Foundation (JHF), which was established in Taito last year. “Halal is very new to the food industry and there are very few consumers in Japan. But there is an awareness taking place gradually as the industry learns about the Halal system,” said Faslin Lafir, a food scientist at JHF. “There are many certification bodies, so there are deviating standards. From an industry point of view, companies are a little bit confused about who to get the certification from, which is becoming a problem. Every year there are more Muslim tourists, especially from Malaysia and Indonesia.” The JHF is in the process of being accredited by the Malaysian Islamic Develoment Department (JAKIM). “JAKIM accreditation is beneficial to promote our companies in terms of the export market — which is currently mainly for green tea and tofu,” said Lafir. “When companies want to export to the Middle East and other Muslim countries, it’s better to get certified, and having JAKIM accreditation, that is more value for them.” More than 20 million tourists are expected to land in Japan when the Olympics kick off in 2020, of which over 1 million will be Muslim. To cater to this market, Tokyo’s governor has met the ambassadors of 17 Muslim countries to discuss strategies to meet the needs of Muslim athletes and tourists. Source: Food Navigator Asia

MORE TAIWAN TOURISM PLAYERS GOING HALAL Taiwan is adapting its traditional tourist attractions to woo Muslim visitors as Chinese arrivals dwindle amid deteriorating relations with the mainland, AFP reported. Taiwan is now embarking on a “southbound policy” and looking to boost relations with 16 south and southeast Asian countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand. This has resulted in a growing number of tourists from Muslimmajority countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Buddhist-majority Taiwan welcomed 30% more visitors from southeast Asia in 2017. Fried Chicken Master, a small shop selling a popular Taiwanese fried chicken snack, has adapted to the trend by selling a Halal version of its offerings. “We hope to be able to serve tourists, exchange students, or Muslims living in Taiwan. As Taiwanese we are proud of our food,” said Louis Tsai, a spokesman for Super Qin Group, which owns the shop. Many hot springs resorts, one of the to-go places on the Taiwan tourism map now provides guest rooms with prayer direction signs and prayer schedules. Gaia Hotel in mountainous Beitou, best-known for its natural pools, obtained its Halal certification by creating a separate hotel kitchen, cooking and dining area. Apart from, Thailand, South Korea and Japan are among Asian nations that have been tapping into the Muslim travel market, which has been fuelled by growth in cheap flights and a booming middle class in countries such as Indonesia. CHICAGO FESTIVAL AIMS TO PROMOTE HALAL LIFESTYLE The I Heart Halal festival will take place at Chicago’s Navy Pier from April 13 to April 15, and is set to be the first-ever Halal lifestyle festival in America, Forbes Magazine reported. It aims to promote a Halal lifestyle, and is set to be packed with recognized experts and entertainers. “Consumers today are more conscious of what they’re consuming and putting into their bodies,” Salman Chaudry, comanaging director of the festival, says.

“Halal meat is one product that would appeal to these consumers because of how the meat is prepared, but Halal goes beyond food and includes health, wellness, travel, fashion, beauty and even finance. A Halal lifestyle is more focused on those who want to live a good, values-driven life. ” Chaudry cites as an example those who prefer to eat organic food, or those who live a sociallyconscious lifestyle. Both are in line with a Halal lifestyle, he says, and it has a broader appeal to both

briefs Muslims and non-Muslims. “We created I Heart Halal as a space for people to come together as a community,” he adds. For Muslims, it’s an opportunity for them to come together and connect with others with a similar background and interest. For nonMuslims, it introduces them to Halal in a way that they may not have ever experienced or considered. Source: Forbes Magazine

FASHION SHOW WITH A DIFFERENCE IN DUBAI Thirty fashion designers from nearly two dozen countries showcased their Muslim-friendly creations at a weeklong fashion event in Dubai recently in novel way – on screen instead of on the catwalk, the Associated Press reported recently. Muslim fashion events are nothing new, where modest clothes without skin-baring designs are paraded by models.

“A Modest Revolution,” a fashion event held in one of Dubai’s newest shopping malls last month, showcases the latest creations by designers hoping to capitalize on a growing desire by Muslim shoppers to wear modest clothing that is also fashionable. “We did away with the catwalk. We thought that was one of the most antiquated things,” Alia Khan, chairwoman of the Islamic Fashion

and Design Council (IFDC), said, explaining the decision to do away with the catwalk, one of the most common elements of fashion shows around the world. Buyers could see and touch the collections up close. At the start of the event, a handful of designs were paraded around the plaza. IFDC says Muslims are expected to spend as much as US$322 billion on fashion this year. That figure is projected to grow as the Muslim population expands to 2.2 billion by 2030. For the first time this year, more than half of all apparel and footwear sales will originate outside Europe and North America, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Co.’s “The State of Fashion” report. The main areas of growth will be in emerging markets in Asia where fashion sales are expected to grow by 6.5 to 7.5 percent this year. In the Middle East, fashion sales are expected to grow by 6 percent, compared to 2 to 3 percent growth in Europe and 1 to 2 percent in North America. Source: AP April 24-27, 2018 55

THE NEW HALAL

INNOVATION

T

he Halal Verified Engine (HVE) is the world’s first online system that expedites the Halal-certification process for Halal status applicants. Built entirely on Microsoft’s cloud services, namely Window Azure and SQL Server, the HVE allows the public to “verify with just one click” the veracity and validity of Halal certificates from 42 Foreign Halal Certification bodies recognised by JAKIM, for any product worldwide at www.Halalverified. com. This invention removes the tedious and often inaccurate manual tracking of Halal certification along the entire manufacturing chain from suppliers to ingredients and their processing methods. It makes it so easy for manufacturers to check on the trail of Halal certificates application and renewal.

Speed up Halal certificates compilation for the Halal certificate application.

Download Halal certificates from Foreign CBs which are recognised by JAKIM.

Platform to source for Halal ingredients from overseas.

Recommendation of alternative Halal suppliers.

Check latest Foreign CBs which are recognised by JAKIM.

View ratings and review of Halal products from the other users.

Access up-to-date news and announcement from the CBs.

Affordable charges.
