Dedicated to Luisa, MY DOG. To the 10 years I did little but enjoy my life next to her, and turning away from society and people altogether. To Carlyne and everything she taught me, especially about how to treat a dog. To her friendship with Luisa. To Evita. To anybody who fought for their childhood ideals. To those seeking their purpose. To myself as a child. To Madonna. To any child who grew up thinking they were Madonna. To Madonna thinking she was Evita. To my hometown, Buenos Aires. To Maradona. To Miles’ smile. To Miles and his dog, Rocco. To Skunk. To the films of Truffaut with Jean-Pierre Léaud. To Adèle Hugo. To her father, Victor Hugo, and his fight against colonialism. To the song “Goodnight and Thank You” from Evita. And to every shortcut I’ve taken to move ahead in my career. To thinking that shortcuts are cool, because Evita had taken them. To glamorizing this very action. To music. To Broadway musicals. To saying to myself, “And who would underestimate the actress now?” every time I felt I had taken a flawless picture in my early days working as a photographer. To every picture I took in order to defy norms and try to make people think. To “Nun Head,” one of my first stories, and to Katie Grand, for publishing it. To living out your true, honest fantasies through photography. To anybody who was ever condemned or crucified for being who they are. To Anne Boleyn. To Marie Antoinette. To any boy who was ever bullied for wanting to be a girl. To all of Evita’s descamisados, the name she gave to the workers in Argentina who owned very little but their love for her. To Nietzsche. To anybody with the courage to live their life alone. To my cousin, Noa, for being the first to show me that my idea of creating a magazine to help rescue shelter dogs in Miami would work. To the dog he adopted after seeing my pictures. To the impossible-to-recreate feeling I had as a child of wanting to have a dog. To every stray dog in the world. To those who help them. To Sofia and the moment I fell in love with her as she entered the school, walking through sunshine with white hair, wearing a white fake fur. To Cami, and how much she reminds me of Julia Roberts. To Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. To the person who told me I’d always be that character. To the line in the movie, “I want the fairy tale.” To Cami becoming an actress. To every model who became an actress. To kids who want to spend their weekends reading. To those who will not follow trends, who are purposely anti-cool. To anybody who loves me. To Presley’s gentlemanly demeanor and in-between smile. To his inheritance of his mother’s mole. To Cindy as a young girl, telling a photographer, “My eyes are like a shop—they close at five.” To old dogs, and to anybody who adopts an old dog. To the end of cruelty to animals. To how similar “Madonna” and “Maradona” sound, and to my 4-year-old self who fought with my brothers about which of the two was more famous. They would argue that in Asia and Africa, everyone knew Maradona, and I would respond that in the U.S., no one did. To Boca Juniors. To my brothers. To my cousin, Pato, his love for fútbol, and to all my cousins for the same reason.

To Miles’ indisputable, incomparable beauty. To Liz Taylor and Stephanie Seymour. To never growing old. To Carine Roitfeld and Peter Pan. To Jordan and Natasha, who trusted me to create the first issue of Act 1. To Helena for helping me materialize any thought like, “The second issue of Act 1 should be about saving the dogs of Miami,” but not answering when I ask about anything I fall into led by vanity. To Nastassja Kinski in Roman Polanski’s Tess, working at a henhouse and saying so accurately about humankind, “It’s all vanity.” To Brandusa and her faith in me. She does not adhere to censorship, because she grew up under Romanian dictatorship, and understands how dangerous it can be. I am vegan, but I eat honey, and feathers appear in these pages as well as in my pillow. To anybody who sets their own rules and does not adhere to extremism, or the need to form a part of a group, or a set of beliefs made by another. To the book Sex by Steven Meisel, the only fashion photographer who is also a genius. To geniuses, and the fact that they exist and are better than others, and to the nonpolarization of ideas generated by social media, where anybody has a point of view and the difference between good and bad is often lost. To anybody who thinks that art is a safe place to live out fantasies. To the fearless. To Pasolini and to Luis Buñuel. To Belle de Jour. To Catherine Deneuve as Séverine, my favorite fictional character. To Antonioni’s BlowUp poster and the fact that his fantasy will live forever. To Virginia Woolf, who said, “A feminist is any woman who tells the truth about her life.” To her book Orlando, and to being both male and female and living forever. To women taking care of men. To men taking care of women. To those who choose to see how power lies in their physical beauty. As Lord Henry said in The Picture of Dorian Gray, “Beauty is a form of genius–is higher, indeed, than genius, as it needs no explanation.” To Oscar Wilde, the years he unjustly suffered in jail, and De Profundis, the masterpiece about acceptance that came from these years. To anybody sentenced for a crime they didn’t commit and put into captivity. To being a kid standing on a chair playing Evita. To kids playing. To makebelieve. To grown-ups who never stop playing. To The Little Prince. To contortionists and people who can do things that nobody else can. This remains the very essence of Act 1. To those who want to fly, and the end of the film Birdy. To Alan, who inspired me since I was born to live with courage and prioritize the search for identity, which can only be achieved by not asking permission from others. To those who refuse to be threatened, especially nowadays, when speaking your mind can cause your art to be silenced. To anybody who is in search of consciousness—of anything that is pure, honest, just, and elevated. —SF

how to adopt a rescue dog The dogs featured in Act 1 were rescued by local shelters in Florida, and many of them are still available for adoption. Act 1’s second issue is about saviors—in my case, rescuing stray dogs, which was maybe what I cared about the most since I was a child. We worked with some of the shelters in Miami to feature these dogs through the magazine, with the hope that one or two will be adopted. My cousin, Noa, fell in love with this puppy when he saw me editing the issue, but this puppy had already found a home. Instead, we adopted his sister, Blue. I call her perrito. —SF
