Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein From his hometown of Guarani, Brasil to the red carpets of Hollywood – and everywhere in between – Francisco Costa is a favorite of modern, sophisticated women. For his new limited-edition capsule collection, Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, the inspiration was Brasilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. His daring, imaginative creations were the perfect starting point for Francisco’s incredibly chic, minimalist style. And MuBE, the Brasilian Museum of Sculpture, which Mendes da Rocha designed, was the perfect backdrop for showing off these limited-edition dresses.

What does it take to raise $6.5 million? If you’re the Central Park Conservancy, you just throw a lunch. summer

À la FraNCIsCO

Calvin Klein Collection’s creative director Francisco Costa’s “A Magical Journey to Brazil,” a collection of summer dresses for Macy’s, is sure to lift the spirits of chicettes everywhere. The look? Pure Francisco. The feel? Modern chic. The price? Accessible to all! What else is new with fashion’s favorite Brazilian? BY MARIA DENARDO PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

You’ve been approached to do countless collaborations. Why Macy’s? Macy’s is our company’s best partner, so the collaboration was organic. They support our business, and they’re great friends of ours. It’s all about relationships. After we signed on, I found out that the reason they chose Brazil as a theme is because they have a ridiculously high number of Brazilian tourists. Who knew? Do you remember the first time you stepped foot into Macy’s? I came to New York City in 1986, and like most tourists, Macy’s was one of my first stops. It’s the place to go! I’d leave FIT and walk over because there was a fantastic bakery downstairs with amazing food. There was nothing like that in the area back then. I liked to go and look at the sweets and the fancy chocolate things. I’m a sweets fanatic! What’s your favorite thing to buy at Macy’s? Underwear…but working at Calvin, I don’t need to buy much! Which particular parts of Brazil inspired your collection? When I think of Brazil, I think of lushness and green, but growing up, I was fascinated with architecture, so that’s the first thing that comes to mind. The buildings there are very minimal and sensuous. Favorite building in Brazil? The Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo. I saw a picture of the building at about 4 in the afternoon when the sun was starting to set. It was the most beautiful image. That’s where I really drew inspiration for the colors—the cement gray of the simple building kissed by the sun, with yellows and nudes. What’s the most Brazilian thing about you? My sense of color? No. Maybe my sense of humor. I’m pretty laid back. Who is your favorite Brazilian? My mother. Why did you decide to design dresses versus sportswear for this capsule collection? Dresses are a big category in the market for every company so I thought, ‘Why torture myself when I can do something very natural?’ They’re definitely summer dresses, and they’re all very versatile. If you need a dress with sleeves, we have that. If you need one for the beach, we have that, too! And if you’re going away for the weekend, we have something to throw in your tote. Are you excited to gain a new following of women? Absolutely! It’s so cool to bring great design at an affordable price. The

democracy is what makes this collection so modern. Did your creative process change while designing within a lower price point? It wasn’t a challenge, but a different dynamic. There were definitely elements I had never considered. Would you consider any other partnerships in the future? Yeah! It would be a fantastic and exciting adventure. Some of the proceeds from the collections associated with “A Magical Journey to Brazil” will benefit the Amazon Rainforest. Have you ever trekked through the Amazon? No! It takes five or six hours on a direct flight from Brazil. It would take the whole day just to travel. But I like the outdoors. I like to hike, and I bike in the city a lot. I have four bikes! Any travel plans coming up? I was invited to go to Greece, which I’m thinking about. I’m also thinking about Burma. It’s changing so rapidly; there’s a lot of excitement there. What are you hoping to buy this summer? I can’t buy much right now, because I’m redoing my house. I’m looking for everything, like lights and chairs. When you’re redoing a home, all you think about are home things. I go crazy on 1stDibs.com and this auction house called Wright. How do you like to decorate? My home is very edited, minimal, and quiet, but it’s not at all cold. How’s your beach bod? I just started taking Muay Thai classes; it’s a type of martial arts for Thailand. It’s like kickboxing. I’ve taken eight classes so far and it was working, but of course, I hurt my back. How funny is that? Do you get to do roundhouse kicks? [laughs] Yes, but I’m terrible at them! Will you break cement with your bare hands? No, thank you very much.

Plus! MORE BRAZILIAN MOMENTS AT MACY’S! Macy’s lovefest with all things Brazil doesn’t end with Costa. Au contraire! The retailer has also unveiled “O Mercado, the Market at Macy’s,” a curated shop of limited-edition items both inspired by and made in Brazil. For example? Handbags, shoes, jewelry and scarves by the likes of FALCHI by Falchi, Seu Jorge, Rachel Roy for Rachel Rachel Roy and a trove of Brazilian swim designers. Best of all? The project is eco-friendly—ten percent of the sale price of each piece sold will benefit The Nature Conservancy’s efforts to protect the Brazilian Amazon.
