RANDOM RUN-IN!
With Sandra Bernhard at the nyfw presentation Are you friends with Jenna Lyons? I am! I don’t know how we met, but we’ve become pals. I admire her work and her fortitude and commitment. When’s the last time you watched Unzipped? It has been a long time! I’m still very good friends with Isaac Mizrahi. Of the things that were happening at the time, I didn’t think, “This is going to be a biggie.” Marc Jacobs was on your Sirius show recently. Marc’s a vulnerable person and hard on himself, like all creative people. It’s hard year after year to reinvent your line and stay true to your vision. It takes a toll.

INEZ & VINOODH TIME!
The photographers shot the Spring ’16 ad campaign for Express. What’s it like working with supermodel Natasha Poly? Natasha is one of the best movers in the business, and she understands what the clothes need to come alive. How did you help transform Natasha into the “Express girl”? The Express girl is young, cool, confident, and a lot of fun. She dances through life, thrilled at where she is and at what lies ahead of her. We had great music on set and all danced around with her. What was your vision for the campaign? An expressive, loving-life kind of enthusiasm and a sense of easy style. Check out our video from the shoot at express.com!

NICOLE MILLER Booth: 1814
Nicole Miller, designer and founder
Favorite career highlight? One thing that was really fun was dressing all the Miss America contestants one year. I literally had to make 52 dresses, and I got to go onstage with them. Ultimate fashion icon? Twiggy! She was the coolest! What is your go-to winter accessory? A bunny neck gaiter I have in a couple of colors and my big trapper hat.
Though New York Fashion Week is wrapping up, the show isn’t over just yet! Before you pack up and jet to London, there’s one more stop here: Coterie, the most fashionable fête on the trade show circuit, at the Jacob K. Javits Center from February 22–24. Here, a preview of the chic set showing this year. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER

What’s new this season? My collection got a new wave of inspiration from fashion icons of the ’60s. Color blocking plays a major role. What was your favorite subject in school? Astronomy. I’d read all known books on that subject in library by the time I was 9 years old.

Favorite Coterie moment? During my first show, we had one of our clients come in and double the business overnight. That is what I call success! What’s your go-to winter accessory? The Jocelyn mohair-fur collar gives me that extra fashion edge and keeps me warm.
CLOQUE SHOWROOM Booth: 6132 Dina Agam, designer
What’s new this season? Luxurious comfortable silhouettes and chic separates. How else do you exercise creativity? I love cooking with an Asian fusion twist.

Any signature designs? We return to iconic leather jackets every season, reimagining timeless styles like the rock ’n’ roll perfecto or aviation-inspired bomber. Tips for staying warm at Coterie? The parfait recipe for luxury: a large cup of top designers’ creative juice, plus a megadose of high-end fur from the go-to source in the U.S. Pologeorgis Furs has been supplying big names like Michael Kors and the legendary Pierre Balmain since the 1960s. Sales manager Daniel Forest fills us in. By KRISTEN HEINZINGER You’re touted as one of the top furriers in the United States. Yes, we’ve been in the NYC fur district since 1960. My boss’ father, Stanley Pologeorgis, started the company by producing for designers such as Pierre Balmain. Nick [Pologeorgis] and his sister have since taken over, and they work one-on-one with designers like Michael Kors, a partner for over 20 years now. We’re one of his longest relationships in the industry. Any other designers you work with? Monique Lhuillier, Derek Lam, Zac Posen, Zandra Rhodes, who’s a fashion icon in her own right, Wes Gordon, Adam Lippes—we help them incorporate fur into their collections. Nick travels around the world and sources all the material himself at the auctions. Having the ability to work with these designers helps us create the Pologeorgis line we show at Coterie. What’s the difference between what we’re seeing at Coterie versus the runway? We take inspiration from the trends we see from the designers we work with. We want to make furs as accessible as possible to enable specialty boutiques to bring fur into their stores. It’s just another textile, and it creates a luxe feeling that a lot of these stores want to illustrate. Many of our pieces are versatile, so they can be merchandised throughout the ready-to-
wear collections stores carry. And the price points are incredible. This year we’re incorporating more of our higher-priced pieces, too. Who is Pologeorgis designing for? Everyone from the young girl to the woman who wants something more classic. We work with a variety of designers, like a Zac Posen, who’s fun, flirty, and feminine, to a Michael Kors, who’s a quintessential American sportswear brand. What brings you to Coterie this season? We meet with the specialty accounts and boutiques that come to NYC looking for designers they might not find in other markets. Our specialty is growing the fur business in smaller boutiques. We always tell boutiques to start small—there’s no minimum. We want to grow the relationship. Where does Pologeorgis source its fur? From all over the world—shearlings from Turkey, foxes from Greece, mink from Denmark. We go straight to the source and cut out the middlemen. There were tons of shearling and fur looks this NYFW. Where do you see the trend heading? Fur is being looked at as a regular textile now. Designers are realizing the importance of adding luxury garments to their lines. It’s not just for winter; we do a lot for Resort and Spring/Summer collections.
How is the company staying current? In the past, people thought furs were only owned by their grandma. Now, designers—and us—want to be colorful, fun, and not so serious. Tell us about your recent e-commerce launch… We offered a small, exclusive collection online and made sure to reach everyone: young, older, feminine, and classic. Next year we’ll see lots of changes online. Any tales from working with major designers? There were times we would all be sitting on the floor with Zac Posen, going through different techniques, colors, and just having fun. We have such a large archive closet, so we are the source for designers in New York City who want to see what’s been done in the past, and what we can do in the future. Are younger designers using fur in new ways? There are organizations that sponsor young designers and work with us to help bring their fur dreams to fruition. They give designers the resources and labor to produce a few pieces for their runway show, manufactured by us. Any celebs wearing Pologeorgis today? Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, the singer Monica… Because we have a huge inventory, stylists are always coming by! ß

Crunch Time with Norma!
An early advocate of a versatile wardrobe for an active lifestyle, Norma Kamali has transformed her showroom to include a full-on Wellness Café. A health junkie with a penchant for barre classes, Kamali invited us to join her for her daily fitness sesh at Physique 57 in NYC, where she’s been a regular for 10 years. Post-workout and over green tea, we catch up. By KRISTEN HEINZINGER Photography BY ZACH ALSTON
That class was intense. How are you feeling? I feel fine! The class is a very fast hour. You can’t look at the clock; you just have to keep going. Were you always into exercise and health? I didn’t consciously think about it, because my mother was really into aerobics. She had vitamins everywhere, and she was always juicing. I was so embarrassed. Nobody else’s mother was doing this! Now I realize, she knew what she was doing. By my thirties, I decided I was going to do that too. Would you say your life is more stressful now? I don’t think there’s a person who will tell you life has gotten easier. These days, working out is required. If you don’t, the stress is deadly. This industry is all about deadlines and stress. It’s not only bad for aging, but it’s bad for your health. When you’re not healthy, you don’t look pretty. How often do you take a class at Physique 57? Every day. It’s a place where I can’t think about what I was just doing. I sweat it out, and have a chance to restart. It becomes addictive and you feel strong. When you feel strong, you feel empowered. Twice a year I have my company take three days of Physique classes; the more people in my company who work out, the better performance is going to be. I just know it. Do you have favorite instructors? I do, but they’re all so good. I just take the class that fits into my schedule. But nobody in their right mind would take [today’s instructor] Chad twice in a row. Didn’t you just take Chad two days in a row? [Laughs] Yes, because it worked with my schedule. Do you always take the advanced classes? Usually; they push me and I can feel a difference in my body. Each time, it gets easier. Do you ever take a break from Physique 57? Only when I travel, but then I do it myself. But there’s nothing like the competition. I’m competitive
and whoever’s in the room, I have to compete with! What’s the most challenging part of the class? The barre stuff. It doesn’t look hard, but it’s intense. Do you have any ballet or barre training? When I was little. Nothing memorable. I’ve seen photos of me in tutus with bruises on my knees. I remember being more of a tomboy than a ballerina. So why did you opt for a barre class? I was taking a circuit-training class with this guy Radu, who trained people for the Olympics. I hurt my knee and thought, Why am I doing this? So I had to find something else. Physique 57 was the nearest thing. Then what? I booked five classes right away. By the fifth class, I was feeling every muscle in my body. By the eighth class, I started to see some definition. Do you enjoy working out to the techno they play? The beat helps with the counting. If you didn’t have the music, it’d just be like, When is this going to end? So, update us on the Wellness Café… It’s part of the new direction I’m going in. The idea is to build a strong immune system. It has solutions…for sleep, for stress, for dry skin, all plant-based. And what about the collection? What’s new? Everything is washable and wearable year-round, except for the coats. It has swimsuits, clothes for the office, evening pieces, but nothing is exclusive. Do the classes inspire ideas for the collection? Not during the class…then, I’m just trying to breathe! But I’m very aware of what feels good, and how to make it more convenient to get from work to a class. I’m designing more active and reversible pieces. Right now I’m crazy addicted to layering prints. Integrating an active lifestyle into style and personal care into your work is what women have to do now. That’s modern. If you have style, you can do whatever you want. You can be anything you want. ß

GLITTER GALS
The Glitter Plan—remind us where it all began… Gela Nash-Taylor: We met in 1988 when we were both working at the Diane Merrick boutique in Los Angeles. It was the classic L.A. story: We were picking up shifts for a friend who was in rehab. We are both petite, and we wanted to make sexy fitted T-shirts. Our mantra was “fit, fabric, color.” The tees also had to have a casual-luxury vibe, becoming softer and better every time you washed them. And voilà! What’s one of your favorite memories of the Juicy tracksuit? Pamela Skaist-Levy: We knew we were on to something when Vogue took us to the Couture shows for a feature on Juicy Couture. The one thing all the front-row ladies had in common, besides being the arbiters of taste and style, was they owned Juicy tracksuits and were wearing them on a daily basis. We put casual luxury and athleisure on the map and are re-creating it today with Pam & Gela. Was there anyone you saw wearing your tracksuits that you never dreamed would? Pamela: The Queen herself—Madonna. That kind of blew our minds. Why do you think the trend is being resurrected? Gela: Velour is a buttery-soft fabrication when treated correctly. It’s so chic and insanely comfortable that you never want to take it off. Wearing the sexy flare or the sexy slim leg with a great shoe (think Altuzarra) and elevating it with an amazing sweater (think Céline or Pam & Gela), and those track pants can take you anywhere. Who doesn’t want to look sexy, chic, and be totally comfortable? How did the TV deal come about? Pamela: We wanted to share our entrepreneurial message and wrote The Glitter Plan with Booth Moore. Our agent, Leslie Siebert, thought it would make a great TV show and asked us who our dream writer and producers would be. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage instantly came to mind. They created Gossip Girl, where fashion and style were the

Pamela: Josh sent her the book and she loved the story. We think Mila is a comic genius and a great dramatic actress! What’s your involvement in the show? Pamela: We’re styling the look of the clothes, and helping with casting and the overall vibe. So what brings you back to Coterie? Gela: For us, as a start-up, going to Coterie exposes us to so many incredible boutiques—we’ve picked up hundreds of fantastic new customers and friends from this show. Half of our business is boutiques, and they buy the line much differently than the big department stores. They know exactly what their customer wants and they also understand the DNA of our brand. They also give us a great indication of what they love and what they can’t keep in the store. Both of us love to shop small boutiques. Having your own salesperson who knows exactly what you’re into, who helps you build a wardrobe…it’s such a special experience. What do you hope to achieve over the three days? Pamela: Continuing to spread the vibe of Pam & Gela! L.A. infused with individuality, rock ’n’ roll, and pure luxurious comfort. Coterie highlight from the past? Gela: With Juicy, our booth at Coterie used to be so nuts that we called it “Juicy School.” With Pam & Gela, it feels like we’re coming home. It’s a really unique experience in that it’s how we built our business the first time around and it’s how we’re building Pam & Gela now. What else is new at the brand? Pamela: We’re obsessed with our Fall collection. With the ’90s revival on the runway, there’s no better time for the return of our signature velour tracksuits reimagined for right now—modern and free, casual and luxe. Gela: We’re so proud of this collection and the unbelievable embroideries, capes, biker jackets, and big faux furs. It’s rock ’n’ roll meets Cali cool. ß

The duo that brought Juicy tracksuits to women (and yes, men) everywhere are back at it. Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, who helm their latest brainchild, Pam & Gela, collaborated with fashion critic Booth Moore on their book, The Glitter Plan. Now, they’ve turned to Mila Kunis and the creators of Gossip Girl to bring it to their story to the small screen (airing soon on Freeform). We figured this is a good time to check in…
