That make Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert feel like she’s on vacation! Central Park is the perfect getaway to escape the day-to-day rush of the city. It’s a narnia of sorts. I love taking walks or running here when I need a moment away. Bergdorf Goodman is a Willy Wonka factory of fashion! The windows bring you into fantastic, elegant dreams of your imagination. It’s a good escape with girlfriends for a shopping day. I love the Cantor Roof Garden Bar at the Met because it feels like you’re floating on top of the world. It’s covered with grass and trees! With Amelia Gray Hamlin You worked at a deli?! It was extremely grounding. It taught me a work ethic. I’m so grateful for the experience. Believe it to not, I take my deli experience to my modeling life. But there’s no cream cheese in fashion. Actually… there are bagels, cream cheese, and a toaster backstage today. fashion for all Barkwood is on a mission to change the conversation with an all-inclusive line of ready-to-wear for women from all walks of life. Founder and designer Charniece White explains.

What was your first foray into fashion? I moved from Maryland to L.A. to pursue design. Everyone was like, why didn’t you move to New York? For me, Los Angeles was more open-minded. I’m curvy, and once you start grading up, certain things don’t get accounted for. When I shop, I feel misrepresented, and I relate to so many people. That inspired me to start my own thing. I develop samples on a size 8 and grade up from there. I have a degree in economics, so I know numbers! Why did you call the line Barkwood? [Laughs] At the time I was starting the line, I was so frustrated—all the men I was meeting were such losers! [Laughs] I said to someone, “Men are nothing but bark and wood!” And I was like, Oh, my God, that’s it! How is Barkwood doing things differently from other brands? It’s our grading scale. When you get to a size 14, the typical grading scale doesn’t apply. You can’t automatically add two inches everywhere. Just like you have to do production fitting for a size 2, you need to do production fitting for sizes 8 and 16 and 18. That’s what we’re trying to do. We know that even though a woman’s thighs might grow two inches, her waist doesn’t necessarily grow proportionally. I decided when I made this line I was going to invest in that, which is why it costs a little bit more than other brands. We’re going to be the pioneers in developing all sizes—small, big, tall, short. Who inspires you these days? Tracee Ellis Ross—I love her and her style and personality. Barkwood is about pleasing yourself, nobody else. Yara Shahidi [from Blackish], too, and Chelsea Handler for her attitude—she is unapologetic.

Tell us about shooting your lookbook. I am always on this journey of losing weight and toning up, but I realized that the destination is the journey. The point is finding myself in each new day. You’ve got to love yourself first. Our lookbook is very much about that. The girls have somewhere to be, and when they stop for gas, they pop into a bed-andbreakfast and just have fun. They’re like, we look good, everything is great, let’s pose! They turn the destination into the journey, and live in the moment. You’re making your Coterie debut! Coterie is an international market, and I feel like we might be best understood internationally. It’s a great starting point for us. What will we see in the booth? It’s a whole experience—you are going to feel like you walked into the lookbook. We’ll have tapestry on the walls, and we’re showing every piece from the line sheet—every color, every fabric. We’ll also have super cool novelty packs with free T-shirts and cute canvas bags. And maybe a glass of champagne! What’s next for Barkwood? I would love to have a brand influencer who understands the brand and has a larger voice than I do. We’ll keep up with society’s needs. Clothes are made to wear, after all! ß

What was your first big break? Working with Jay Manuel on Canada’s Next Top Model. He recommended me to Iman. That changed my career. What’s some of your proudest work? A lot of my looks on Kristen Stewart are my prouder moments. She’s very eccentric with makeup, and she kind of lets me do my thing. We push in a way that I don’t think is typical for red carpet looks. Is there any celebrity that you’re dying to work with? Cate Blanchett. She’s so stunning and regal, and she’s one of the last real movie stars we have left. So fill us in on Beauty@Coterie! Coterie approached me with the idea of creating a beauty space. I’m creating a retail environment, a space where buyers can see what’s new in beauty and the products that they might want to install into their boutiques or their larger stores. So many clothing stores are introducing beauty. We have an assortment of color cosmetics, some skincare, bath and body, and fragrance and candles. We’ve never done it before, so we’re excited, and hopefully we expand it for February. Any brands or trends we should keep an eye out for? MAKE Beauty, which is based in New York, and Raw Spirit, which is a fragrance brand that’s doing cool things with organic ingredients, to name a few. It’s an interesting assortment. There are products at every price point—things that are more luxury and others that are more accessible. Show season is busy—what’s your trick for looking fresh? Use a brightening primer and a little bit of concealer. If you haven’t slept enough and you’re looking a little gray because you had a few too many the night before, a little cream blush helps a lot! ß

First things first! What’s your backstory? I was always into fashion—as a kid in Alberta, Canada, I read everything from Details and Elle to Allure and Vogue, which were the only things I could get where I lived. There were no resources for me to become a designer or a stylist or even a photographer there. When I was a teenager, Kevyn Aucoin launched his Making Faces book. I bought that with whatever money I had from my part-time job, stole a bunch of my mom’s makeup, and started playing. I finagled my way into a M.A.C. discount, and became the blackmarket M.A.C. lady at my high school. [Laughs] I’d charge the girls full price, and use the cash to buy more makeup. I was an entrepreneur even then! What were the hot sellers? The first product I ever bought was M.A.C. Silver Dusk Powder, which is discontinued. It had tiny little sliver glitter in it. I thought it was the coolest, prettiest thing I had ever seen. Pervette Lipstick was also popular.

feel the optimism! Kate Spade’s Spring ’18 collection included a joyful mix of floral prints, warm colors, and playful silhouettes.

Famous for collecting inspiration from her global jaunts, Kate Spade New York creative director Deborah Lloyd took us to the Grand Central Oyster Bar for Spring ’18, where her Southern charm–charged collection was on full display. Over champagne and oysters, we discussed! BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER

What brings us to the Grand Central Oyster Bar today? We always try to show at a classic New York institution. We wanted someplace that was a hidden gem for not just New Yorkers but people coming from all over the world. It really goes with our collection, which is inspired by Southern charm and New Orleans. It’s a great space, and really interesting, architecturally. What inspired you about New Orleans? It’s our 25th anniversary in 2018, so to celebrate, we decided to take a joyous trip around America. To start, we headed south. The South is so famous for its charm, and it felt very Kate Spade. I wanted to explore that with New Orleans, somewhere I’ve been intrigued by since I was a girl. I love the mix of American and French. I took inspiration from the flora and fauna we saw in the Garden District, the Audubon Society Butterfly Garden, and the Mississippi River and all the critters there. I went to Café du Monde for coffee and a beignet. I saw some of the nightlife and we went to the voodoo museums, but I’m very cautious of that stuff! And, FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

of course, I wanted to see the cemeteries—they’re magical places. How does the theme pop up in the collection? We created beautiful prints based on the Garden District, so the Spanish moss and the magnolias, and the Audubon’s butterflies. The colors are reflective of that—greens, soft dusty pinks with black backgrounds. It’s got the moody feeling of New Orleans. The wrought-iron lace-work in some of the clothes and garments goes back to the wroughtiron work in the French Quarters. And the critters! Bringing a live alligator in here was definitely brought up. [Laughs] Did you learn anything interesting from doing your research? The hankie tradition—during the Preservation Hall Jazz Band procession, the women have used hankies as flair and they wave them around. So we used embroidered hankies as our invitations. How are you celebrating 25 years of the brand? And it’s 10 years for you! It’s exciting. We brought back our Sam bag—that perfect nylon black bag—which is the first bag everybody knew us for. You’ll see us play on that throughout the year—everything from the classic nylon to embellishments to wicker to the shape. Happy birthday, Sam! How are things going since merging with Coach? In my world, nothing has changed. It’s all about being Kate Spade. We’re now one of a group of brands, and I think it’s important to be ourselves. Where to next? Paris! We’re going to celebrate the opening of our flagship. I can’t wait—I

love Paris and I lived there for six years! Looking ahead, where do you want to see Kate Spade go? We’re going to build on the success of our past 25 years. The core of what we do is handbags, so it’s looking back at those, like Sam, and reinventing them. We’ve become a lifestyle brand, so we’re looking at our girl and the different aspects of her life: Where’s she going? What’s she wearing? How’s she wearing it? How do we stay modern and relevant? What does she need to carry these days? There’s lots of things to think about. Cheers to the next 25! ß

taste test! How do you dress your oysters? I like a little bit of lemon and the mignonette sauce, which is the vinegar-based piece. But I don’t like to overwhelm them! Tell us an oyster fun fact. You’re not supposed to eat oysters in a month without the letter “r” in it. I learned that while I lived in Paris. Where’s your fave place to eat them? On Île de Ré in France. You cycle out to the oyster beds and you sit on the benches, eat oysters, and drink copious amounts of rosé and then try to find your bicycle and cycle home. It’s exquisite. Which was your favorite today? I like West Coast the best, I have to say. They have the prettiest shells and they’re creamy; I didn’t know there was creamy versus briny. You learn something new every day. Can you shuck an oyster? I’d have to have all the right equipment—the special gloves and everything. But I’d give it a go!

I haven’t got the foggiest notion. Do you go to the Polo Bar? Doesn’t he sell a lot of antiques there? One of my friend’s daughters, who’s a buyer, bought all the antiques for him. Any idea where Ralph Lauren lives? Over yonder!

fresh take

From exotic prints to bright bursts of color, designers are embracing the spring spirit. Make sure to stop by these booths for an intimate look at the season’s must-buy ensembles.

Inspired by the 1953 film Mogambo—a rom-com in which Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly fight for the attention of Clark Gable while visiting a Kenyan safari—Miller’s Spring ’18 collection featured combat boots and the feminine dresses she’s famous for. Some were emblazoned with parrots, butterflies, and florals, some ruffled, some lace—plus leather jackets, khaki pieces including a mid-length skirt and a range of trench coats, and canteen-shaped purses.

Milly Flower power! For Spring 2018, Milly’s Michelle Smith focused on wildflowers with petal-emulating skirts and layers of ruffles, ruffles, and more ruffles. Midriff was a focal point here, with plenty of tummy-baring silhouettes. Shirting was strong, and pleats had a major moment by way of skirts and even the bells of an all-white ribbed tunic-turnedpants look. In essence, Milly stayed true to Milly, and the bright colors and feminineloving fits will tug at the heartstrings (and wallets) of its loyal clientele.

zadig & Voltaire Zadig & Voltaire’s Spring collection, titled “Let Love Rule” (after the Lenny Kravitz song), was an uplifting twist on its signature punkmeets-militant vibe. There were sequins, overextended sleeves, a riff on the slip dress, and a risqué approach with an entirely sheer top. The collection is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age. To put it simply, Creative Director Cécilia Bönström showcased a collection relatable to all—that is, unless you’ve discovered a fountain of youth.

Happy Birthday, Jill Stuart! The label turned 25 years old this season and to celebrate, the designer turned to her archives, naturally. But Stuart stressed that these were not remakes— the archives simply served up inspiration for new looks. Stuart’s romantic creations have vintage appeal that has always maintained a cool cachet. She serves up the kind of things that women like Chloë Sevigny, perched front row, adore—feminine gems with an elusive edge.

peserico

riccardo peruffo, Ceo What’s the brand’s backstory? My mother, Maria Peserico, launched the line in the ’60s—she was a tailor and decided to set out on her own adventure. It was Italy after WWII, a time when it seemed impossible for a woman to launch a company, and she was brave to do it. Eventually, I took over as CEO, and with my wife, Paola [Gonella], we carry on the brand’s feminine style, and we've expanded the company internationally. When did you become interested in fashion? It’s in my DNA. I was born in this world, working alongside my mom. I was her student before I was CEO. I am part of every process that goes into the collections—I help choose the fabrics, the styles, and I know how to tailor. Why did you choose to open up in the Hamptons? We believe that our collection meshed with the environment in the Hamptons—the colors and the materials match the lifestyle and the clientele. The Hamptons customer is very particular, and they recognize quality. Everything from Peserico is made in Italy, and we pay great attention to detail. We knew we could meet the expectations. What is the Hamptons of Italy? Forte dei Marmi [in Tuscany] is similar—it has that sophisticated clientele, but our stores stay open until 1 a.m.! Who is the Peserico woman? A dynamic woman who is culturally elevated and socially active. She’s sophisticated but never flashy, and she loves luxury and innovation. What are some highlights of the S/S 18 collection? We introduced two tones of white—optic and chalk—in addition to bringing back our iconic blue Peserico color. Oversize dresses and shirts with an emphasis on flared sleeves combined with retro-style wheel skirts and pants that are slimmer. Athleisure is also a big part of the collection— we introduced sporty looks in technical fabrics. As always, the big focus is our prints. This season’s inspiration comes from small Japanese ceramics. What makes the brand special? We pay great attention to quality, making sure everything is extremely well-made. In the past, it was common for people to go to a tailor for custom-made clothing, but that tradition has pretty much disappeared. At Peserico, we continue that tradition. Every piece has a story. If you touch our clothes, you can tell the difference instantly. Sometimes we sacrifice profit because we prefer to guarantee that every product is well-made. peserico

Booth 6530 JACQUIE AICHE, designer & Founder How did you come to work with Alessandra Ambrosio for your new campaign? Alessandra has been a muse to me since the beginning. We met when I owned a clothing store and she bought one of my first creations. It was a dream to finally get to work with her. Her support means so much to me. Why is she a good fit for your brand? She’s a spiritual goddess, and that’s what the tribe is all about. What was the concept behind the campaign? We are always inspired by strong iconic women. For this campaign, we were channeling Penélope Cruz vibes. Who did you work with on the campaign? The campaign was shot by Naj Jamai and styled by Marie-Lou Bartoli. What is the main focus this spring? Our focus for Spring 2018 is happiness…lots of bright fun colors! When did you become interested in jewelry design? I always wanted to be a designer, and as a child, I was always sketching outfits. No surprise, they were always a little too risqué for everyone’s taste. Fine jewelry deserves to be sexy, too. How do you relax after show season? Lots of yoga and crystal bowl sound baths. I built a yoga studio above our office in Los Angeles, so we have weekly sessions.

In each place I have a great tribe of friends who are designers, artists, entrepreneurs, and yoga teachers. I think of all of them when I design.

Booths 7955 Toni Hacker, designer & founder What are you looking forward to this fall? I love fall layering, and it’s definitely my favorite season for fashion. We’ve had some great boutiques and larger retailers pick up the collection, so we’re now available in-store and online at Gus Mayer, Julian Gold, Von Maur, Bloomingdale’s, and Anthropologie. What were you doing before you were a fashion designer? Industrial design. I have a nerdy side that enjoys math and geometry.

Current model obsessions?

e h t n o man street There are certain questions that we find ourselves asking season after season after season. In Sheep Meadow at Central Park, we directed them at an entirely new audience!

central park edition

BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN LIU

How are you getting ready for New York Fashion Week? When’s that again? I’ll likely be rehearsing. Do you dance professionally? I’m on tour with The Lion King! You don’t say. Who do you play? Right now I’m playing the giraffe, but I’ve also played a shrub. Will we be seeing you in Milan and Paris? I was just in Paris for a dance festival for four weeks. It’s a little boring compared to New York. What models do you get excited to see walk? Gigi? Kendall? Gigi Hadad is my favorite. It’s Hadid! How are you getting to Ralph’s show in Bedford? I’m very out of touch. I wish I could be more helpful!

Issy 19, student Has anyone ever told you that you look like Mila Kunis? All the time. Can you confirm that you are not Mila Kunis? I’m not! Just checking! What’s the most memorable fashion show you’ve ever attended? I was actually in one when I was in primary school. I had to wear this T-shirt with a cat on it. I unfortunately didn’t land a modeling contract. What’s your driver’s name? Dad. What products do you use to stay looking so youthful? Vaseline. How do you feel about Proenza and Altuzarra going to Paris? I’m excited! Why not spread it around?

What were you up to this summer? I was a lifeguard in the Hamptons. Cool. Did you save any lives? I was off the day that someone almost drowned. I missed the action! How many influencers do you know? Like Nelson Mandela? That kind of thing? Anybody else? Gandhi. Do influencers affect the way you buy clothes? Gandhi dressed pretty funky. I liked his style.

pim 20, hails from The Netherlands What brings you here? NYFW? I’ve been in the states for two months now. I’ve been working at a water park in Ohio. This is my vacation. Where did you holiday this summer? Tuscany? Mykonos? Capri? Cincinnati. How’s the fashion there? Baggy like everything in America. Oh! Let me guess—you had a great summer? How did you know that? You look like a movie star. Would you ever model? Maybe. Everyone at the water park thought I was a model.

daily discovery!

Jess 20, visiting from Manchester, England We understand you are skipping Milan this season. What’s up? Money issues. I can’t afford to fly to Italy right now. Who does your hair color? Just someone named Devon from my village. It’s 30 pounds. A bargain! Where do you stay in Paris? At some random girl’s house. I was an exchange student! How was room service? The weird brother would sort of peep in my room, so I’d give it a two out of five. But it was free of charge!
