ARE YOU
HOLIDAY-READY? The gifts, the parties, the travel plans—remember that this time of year is a marathon, not a sprint. How are you faring so far? Take the test! 1. How frequently have you been visiting Equinox?
A. I always start two-a-days after Halloween. The season demands it! B. Four to five times a week, weather-depending. C. August. I should cancel my membership… D. I’m really going to maybe think about joining!
2. How’s your seasonal wardrobe shaping up?
A. I preordered the bulk of it on Saks.com back in July, thank heavens. B. I’ve scored some great new sweaters at Ferragamo. C. Last year’s LBD will be just fine. It’s Bottega! D. Eh. Pretty sure my mom is going to send me one of those embroidered sweaters.
3. The current state of your home could be described as…
A. Positively dripping in greenery. Van Wyck charges me a fortune, but it’s worth it! B. In flux. I’ve only installed one of my three trees! C. Festive! I got a cool new candle at Jonathan Adler. D. A disaster. Should I hire a cleaning person?
4. When was the last time you used your credit card?
A. Fifteen seconds ago, when my Hermès shopper found the perfect scarf for my mother-in-law. B. Twenty minutes ago, for my fourth Starbucks. C. This morning, for my single Stumptown. D. Last Tuesday, to add another $40 onto my MetroCard.
5. What are you gifting your significant other?
A. The thing he/she has been lusting over since February, which is what I bought...at Omega. B. Luggage from either Globe-Trotter or Rimowa. Thoughts?
C. Whatever’s on the Amazon wish list. D. I don’t even start thinking about that stuff until 24 hours pre-holiday.
in front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. C. A Charlie Brown Christmas on iTunes. D. I keep meaning to watch Bad Santa!
6. What’s your holiday dining strategy?
11. How would you describe your seasonal stress levels?
A. I do all the big meals myself…with a little help from my staff. B. We’ve reserved our space at L’Appart, the Chef’s Table at Le District. So easy. C. I leave it all to the qualified caterers at Parm. D. Whatever you’re making! Worst-case scenario: Seamless.
A. Off the charts, but they are easily adjusted with enough eggnog from P.J. Clarke’s. B. Above average, just how I like them this time of year. C. Slightly above normal, but only because I still have shopping to do. D. What is there to be stressed about?
7. What’s your pajama game these days?
A. A silk pair from Gucci in ice blue. Very Rosemary Clooney circa White Christmas, n’est-ce pas? B. New flannels from Sleepy Jones. Toasty! C. I just got some new J.Crews for my kids. D. White Hanes T-shirt, ancient boxers. A classic!
8. What are your New Years’ plans?
A. We’ve invited some new friends to our place in Mustique. Can’t wait to see Tommy! B. Another New Year’s, another group trip to Tulum! C. We usually ski Vermont, weather depending. D. We’ll probably just stay home.
9. Thoughts on stockings?
A. I’ve never managed to find the right place to get mine customized. Help! B. I tend to fill ours with a mix of useful personalcare items and thoughtful gifts. C. They’re so cute, but so much work… D. I’m never wearing those again!
10. What are your theater traditions?
MOSTLY A’S YOU ARE…MARTHA STEWART From high-concept parties to cleverly conceived gifts, you’ve got this whole thing handled—and you do it in style. We should all take notes!
MOSTLY B’S YOU ARE…CARA DELEVINGNE Your whole vibe is addictively charming, and you look like you’re seriously enjoying yourself. But does your Instagram account paint the entire picture?
MOSTLY C’S YOU ARE…AMY SCHUMER You’ve got other things going on, love, and we respect you for it. All we ask is that you keep us guffawing at the table!
MOSTLY D’S YOU ARE…LENA DUNHAM It’s clear that the quotidian isn’t really your beat. We still adore you!
A. Best-in-house seating for The Nutcracker, bien sûr. B. I round out a Rockettes moment with a photo op

winter wonderland
Let’s not forget the real reason the holidays are so magical—yep, that fabulous old guy in the red suit. Santa’s Winter Wonderland is taking up residence on Level 2 at 230 Vesey Street from December 2–24. Round up the kids (or cozy up with your other half) to captures your special North Pole moment. Or better yet, mark December 4 in the diary and bring the little ones to meet Santa and characters from The Nutcracker, and join the Elfie Selfie set. And how about a spin around The Ice Rink while you’re at it? Make like a bona fide fashionista and take your twirl in a shaggy Michael Kors fur coat. Because let’s face it, ’tis the season for full-throttle glamour. BrookfieldPlaceNY.com/events/ santa

Davidoff CIGARS
Shopping in traditional brick-and-mortar stores is no longer just about the actual clothes (how passé) but a total sensory experience—or overload in the case of the latest installation to hit the luxury mall. Brookfield has collaborated with artist David Rockwell to create a Winter Garden, complete with a lighting display to rival any of the Fifth Avenue spectaculars. Hundreds of suspended custom-colored lanterns—embedded with LED lights, along with touch-sensitive wishing stations—can be found among the palm trees. Be sure to get touchy feely because for every wish Brookfield will donate a dollar, up to $25,000, to the Grammy Foundation’s Grammy in the Schools program, which supports kids realizing their dream to become the next Ellie Goulding. So make that fashion meets art meets music.

DOWNTOWN FIX: 5 BPNY facts • Ferragamo sells more ties at this location than at any other of its stores on the planet. • The J.Crew outpost is a “concept” store—meaning that it stocks new merchandise a full 30 days (!) before other locations and jcrew.com. • Skinny Pizza is in da house, but the question is, is it still considered “skinny” if we eat the entire pie? • By year-end, Time Inc. will bring approximately 3,500 employees to the area. • By 2016, Burberry will be known as one brand—Burberry—there’ll be no more “Brit,” “Prorsum,” or “London.”

☛ In further proof that lower Manhattan is haute, get set for the arrival of Saks Fifth Avenue’s first downtown digs at BPNY, throwing open its doors in June 2016. The iconic New York department store— founded in 1924 on Fifth Avenue—is in expansion mode, with plans to open more stores locally and globally and to elevate its fashion and beauty offerings. That said, expect three floors of fashion heaven, including accessories and ready-to-wear from the likes of Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Valentino, and others. ☛

Alessandra Ambrosio, model “The holidays are all about family and eating for me. I’ll be in the south of Brazil—it’s really warm there, so I’ll be in my bikini. I love Christmas and buying presents for everyone.”
J.J. Martin, editor and founder of Ladoublej.com “My husband and I do the same routine every holiday season. First, we go to Pesaro on the Adriatic coast of Italy to visit his family for Christmas, then on the 26th, we drive up to St. Moritz and spend 10 days in the mountains. We rent a home and ski, hike, throw dinner parties, see friends—it’s amazing how many Italians run away to Switzerland for the holidays. It’s like winter summer camp. I bump into a lot of fashion people, like Moncler’s Remo Ruffini, Karla Otto, and Jil Sander’s Rodolfo Paglialunga.”

Adam Selman, designer “I’ll be in New York. I love the city on Christmas because it’s empty. This time of the year is low-key for me. I don’t give Christmas gifts. I give gifts throughout the year, so there’s no pressure. Getting a week off in fashion is the biggest gift ever.”
Francisco Costa, creative director, Calvin Klein Collection “I’m going to Brazil for 10 days! For the first time I’m going to explore São Paulo.”
Laura Brown, executive editor, Harper’s Bazaar “I’ll be in London and then L.A., because that’s practical. Spending time with friends in sweaters and T-shirts, respectively.”
Jonathan Simkhai, designer “I’m heading down to Art Basel in the beginning of December and look forward to enjoying the warm weather. For the holidays I’ll be spending time with friends and family and relaxing at my new apartment in the West Village.”
Tanya Taylor, designer “I have the craziest holiday plans. I’m going to Canada for a couple days and then Barbados and then to Iceland. Getting from Barbados to Iceland is a journey. I have a friend who is getting married there on New Year’s Eve, and it's a Game of Thrones–themed party. I’m going to be Khaleesi!”
Cipriana Quann, Urban Bush Babes blogger “I’m traveling to see my mother in Nevada.”

Caroline Issa, designer and editor “I will be spending my holiday eating my way through Singapore's finest street food kiosks and local markets. I’ll be visiting my Singaporean family and escaping our typical Canadian white winter with something tropical and foodie. Usually Christmas in Singapore is a bit disconcerting—all the fake snow and decorations amongst the palm trees and heat—but I’m so excited to just eat and get some humidity for a week with close family.”
“I feel like the holidays came up so quickly this year! Wasn’t it just Halloween? My plans will consist of throwing my annual holiday decorating party. I invite a mix of friends and co-workers to join in creating holiday ornaments, gingerbread houses, and home décor. It’s a fun night of cocktails and crafts. I’ll also get to spend my first Christmas with my new nephew and the rest of my family in Maryland. On the actual day, I’ll be by the fire with my partner, Brad, for our second Christmas at our new house in Connecticut. I can’t wait to decorate it for the holidays.” FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. HOLIDAYS On ICE
courtesy
If you pass by the Rink at Brookfield Place and notice a familiar duo doing their thing on the ice, well, allow us to refresh you: They’re Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, a husbandand-wife team of ice dancers who competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Now running the programming at the rink, the couple guarantees that your in-skates experience will be nothing less than magical. PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO What are your plans for the rink? Melissa Gregory: We’re going to be offering private lessons, group classes, parent-and-me classes, a hockey skating skills class, private-event rentals, and corporate skating. Hopefully, we’ll also do some shows. Denis Petukhov: We’re hoping to bring world-class Olympic athletes and entertainers, and fuse it all together to create the most fun place around. Is this the first time that you’ve done this sort of an operation? Melissa: We’ve run programs all over the state of Connecticut, but this is the first time that we’re going to this kind of a location. And in Manhattan! I don’t think there’s anywhere quite like this, with all the high-end shopping and great restaurants. It’s going to be the place to be. Our programs, right now, are set to go on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but other events can be scheduled privately at other times. What’s the scoop on your organization, Proud Nation? Denis: Proud Nation is a not-for-profit that hosts the EduSkating program, which is a partnership with the U.S. Olympic Committee that brings skating into schools. It’s a pipeline into the Olympics, basically. We go into the schools and work with kids, offering skating, and we provide them with the tools necessary to succeed. We also want to offer it to corporations. Melissa: We work with all ages, from 3-year-olds to adults in their seventies! The biggest concentration is students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We’d love to have everybody come skate. How do you divide responsibilities? Melissa: It’s a good thing we’re married! [Laughs] We share everything. Is it true that you met when you were both looking for a skating partner? Denis: Yeah. We were both junior national champions in our own countries, and both of our partners quit for various reasons. I was actually looking for a partner for three years. A friend of my mother’s found a post on the Internet from a Russian guy who was looking for a partner. It was on a figure skating website, so it wasn’t something creepy. It was during the dial-up era—it took 10 minutes to get online. We talked over e-mail for a few months just to see if our goals aligned, and we decided to bring him over for a tryout. We decided to skate together. How did your lives change? Denis: I came to JFK with $40 in my pocket and a pair of skates, not knowing what was going to happen. What happened to me? I still can’t grasp it. Even today, we were walking outside, and I said, “I still can’t believe we’re going to be running programs at Brookfield.” We’ve done so much in 15 years. Melissa: It was kind of risky. I didn’t know if he was a creep or a good skating partner, but everything worked out. There was an immediate connection there.
And then five months later, we got married. He came over on August 31, 2000, and we got married February 2, 2001. That was pretty serious! Denis: We’re going to have our 15th anniversary on the rink here. We’ve got to do a party! Melissa: Everybody asks me if it was love at first sight, and the first thing I noticed at the airport were his shoes. He had these nice Italian woven-leather shoes; they were really great. There you go—fashion and skating! How did your parents react? Melissa: They knew about it—we eloped—and they were supportive on both sides. His family invited me in, and vice versa. It was good that we had such a strong support system, and they were so supportive of our choices. That probably helped us to be successful. Denis: Although we came from two separate families from different parts of the world, we were brought up with almost identical values. Our families got along from the get-go. Melissa: It was meant to be. What was it like to then go on to the Olympics? Melissa: We had our five-year anniversary there. The path to the Olympics is a lot of hard work. There were a lot of grueling and The Rink at amazing, happy times. A lot of failure, a lot of Brookfield Place disappointment, but on the other side, a lot of success and triumphs. Denis: And satisfaction. Melissa: Skating taught me everything. I wouldn’t trade our experience for anything. It formed us into who we are. What did it feel like to be on the Olympic ice? Was there a particular moment where you felt like you achieved your goal? Melissa: The opening ceremonies. The entire Olympic Games were just surreal. Everything that you think it is, it is, and more. The opening ceremonies were the time when it hits you like a wall. It takes a few hours—you’re in a line, and they herd you through, and you’re in a procession with a lot of athletes, and once you get to the door, you’re in the Olympic stadium with hundreds of thousands of people. At that moment, you’re like, “Oh, my gosh.” It was emotional. You realize that you’re among a small percentage of the world that gets to participate. Denis: It was special, because we took a lot of detours. We qualified for the 2002 Olympics, but we couldn’t go, because I had changed countries. The road to the Olympic Games was very long for us, and we didn’t know until the last moment that we could even go, because my citizenship came through just under a year before. The whole experience was a celebration of our success, coming together from different cultures and completing the dream. We didn’t care what the result was going to be—we just wanted to do the best, and do what we’d been trained to do. Melissa: It was more of a personal triumph to be there and compete and do our best. That was our dream. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

THE place to be Brookfield Place’s mission to revitalize the community of lower Manhattan has been a game-changer for the area’s residents and visitors alike. Callie Haines, the development’s vice president of asset management, explains the transformation. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO
First things first: Can you share a brief history of Brookfield Place? Sure! Brookfield Place was formerly the World Financial Center; located directly across the street from the World Trade Center. After the financial crisis, the World Financial Center, as it was known, wasn’t really a financial center anymore, and we needed to start to figure out how we were going to attract new types of tenants to downtown. Goldman Sachs moved next door, and there really was no retail to service their employees. So we saw an opportunity to create a bold statement about the new downtown, and revitalize a neighborhood that used to be relatively quiet after 6 p.m. We thought that a curated mix of retail, combined with enough destination restaurants, would really draw people to this incredible community, and so far, people are loving it. We’ve also added a rich calendar of cultural events, which have contributed to the energized feeling of what was once a purely financial district. What makes the place so special? It’s a unique mix. We have the waterfront—there’s really no other retail experience in Manhattan that has these views—and we’re so close to so many subways. We’re a complement to what the World Trade Center is going to be doing with their retail. We think of it more as an ability to create a place for the community to gather— one that aims to enrich their lives in different ways. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
Did the pace at which the vacancies were filled surprise you? Our leasing and management teams had a very strong vision early on—we’ve been working on this for 10 years, and we’ve been evolving our vision. Once we were able to share our message and goals, the tipping point happened. And then things moved very quickly. What was the tipping point? With retail, it was Burberry. They were the first to really get the retailers very excited about coming downtown. Once they signed on, the retail leasing took off, and our office leasing accelerated at the same exact time. We knew the place that we wanted to create, and we did not waver from our vision. We have spaces remaining, and we’re being very careful about who those spaces are going to be for, because they’re the final pieces of the puzzle. We just want the puzzle to come out perfectly. The Winter Garden really feels like the heart of Brookfield Place. Yes! We’ve always thought of it as a great place for people to gather and enjoy the amazing food in our restaurants, meet up with friends, and enjoy our cultural offerings. A lot of families from Tribeca and Battery Park City meet up with friends here, because there are plenty of activities for children, especially during the holidays. Our Arts Brookfield programming always has something exciting happening.

You put on some cool events this summer. Any highlights? Our Hudson Music Festival was our biggest draw. This year in particular, with the retail opening in late March, it was almost treated as an opening event. Our events team is constantly trying to source new events. We have fantastic retailers, and we are very aware of what works for them, and what doesn’t. We’re trying out a bunch of different things. What is the ambiance like? We tried to create one cohesive atmosphere. It’s clean, sophisticated, and smart, and it’s a welcoming environment but a very special environment. Do you foresee this area becoming a center for media? Yes, and the tipping point for that would be the Condé Nast move. It really brought downtown to the attention of Time Inc. and the like. Hudson’s Bay Company is moving its headquarters here, too. The area is really becoming a literal intersection of fashion, media, and technology. Do you have any plans to coordinate events with Fashion Week? That’s definitely down the pipeline! How are visitors to New York enjoying Brookfield Place? As soon as construction on West Street is done, it will be a lot easier for tourists at the memorial to cross the street and see us. It’s a neighborhood spot right now, and that’s really what we wanted it to be, because we built this place for the neighborhood first and foremost. Did you find that there was competition with Westfield? We had a very clear direction in what we wanted, the sort of luxury and aspirational brands, and they’re going a different direction. So it’s actually very complementary, and I think Westfield would say the same thing. Is there a dream retailer you would love to move in? My favorite retailers are here. I’m fairly lucky—my bank account, not so much. What’s the food scene in the neighborhood like? It’s getting a lot better. The past five years have seen a huge influx of some great new restaurants down here. How did you curate the dining area? We wanted to create a sort of a food mecca downtown. By putting the dining terrace and the marketplace Le District together, we created a dining destination. We have a couple of restaurant spaces on the Vesey Street side, which we think of as the restaurant corridor because they complement the restaurants on the Goldman Sachs side of the street. And Hudson Eats is really incredible—we’ve brought together some of the most in-demand restaurants in New York and beyond, and they’ve been so popular with the people who work and live here. Umami Burger, in particular, was really exciting, because this is one of their first locations on the East Coast. Black Seed Bagels, Chop’t salads...there are options for everyone. And the kids in the neighborhood love the Sprinkles cupcakes, of course! Any personal favorites? I’m an equal-opportunity diner. Fair enough! Why did you keep the palm trees in the Winter Garden? Because they’re iconic and they’re beautiful! And they represent the new Brookfield Place and the old World Financial Center. It really ties everything together. We had to replace the palm trees, though. They’re real—people think they’re fake. That’s just a maintenance thing. They keep growing! Was anything else preserved? The stairs in the Winter Garden. They’re beautiful and very iconic to the World Financial Center and the new Brookfield Place. They were very important to us, as well as to the community. What makes this neighborhood so special? Battery Park City itself is really quiet—once you cross West Street you feel like you’re on an island. The parks are beautiful, it’s very family-oriented, the schools are great. So it’s a real attraction for families especially, and for young professionals. What’s the easiest way for people to get here? We are close to subway lines—the A/C/E and 1/2/3—as well as the PATH. Fulton Center is open, and once the tunnel can connect all the way through the Trade Center, it comes directly up into Brookfield Place. We also have the ferry right outside connecting to New Jersey, too. So we’re very easy to get to. I think that was one of the messages that was challenging for us to get across. With the amount of construction going on down here, it seemed almost difficult to get to sometimes! Is this the kind of project with an end in sight? I don’t think it will ever end, and that’s a good thing. I think it needs to constantly move and evolve as downtown moves and evolves, as the culture down here does, as the residential population does. We need to continue to adapt and move with it. That’s what creating a place is—it’s creating a place that feels alive and feels like it lives with you.
