TASTE TESTING! With Daily fave Nicole Miller
Tell us about your new rosé! Being half French, I always grew up with wine. I really acquired my taste for wine during my school year in Paris. Summer trips to St. Tropez and later St. Bart’s got me loving rosé.
Why did you launch your own?
It seemed like a natural thing to do, especially since my brand has evolved into many lifestyle categories. We now have many home products, including cookware. When the opportunity presented itself, I was thrilled! After undergoing many tastings, I’m proud of the final product. What is unique about my rosé is that it’s made in Bordeaux, while most are made in Provence. As a Francophile and wine lover, I fell in love with the area years
ago. I was impressed to learn how the great Châteaux from Bordeaux were able to produce such incredible rosés. I’ve traveled around Provence as well and visited many vineyards. I found this rosé far superior.
poured on the East End?
It’s made at Château Auguste and is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc grapes. It’s vinified by Damien Landouar, the famous French winemaker of Château Gaby. But more than anything, rosé is about relaxation rather than competition. This rosé is elegant and perfectly balanced with aromas of fresh raspberries and strawberries. It’s dry and aromatic, luscious but light.
My favorite thing to serve with rosé is langoustine. Our East End lobsters are a great substitute. I make a delicious lobster bisque, but the rosé is also great with a steamed lobster. Sometimes I’ll make a curried seafood stew and, of course, all kinds of salads and pasta dishes. My Vietnamese summer rolls are always a staple. I just can’t wait to plan this summer’s menu and serve my new rosé.
Walk us through the flavors…

Your Summer Travel Plans, Revealed! Where are the most beautiful in the world flying off to this season? The Daily Summer investigates! BY EDDIE ROCHE
megan williams “I’m doing something pretty unique for a holiday—I’m rafting for a week in the Grand Canyon with a group of 16 friends! I’m excited and nervous as it’s something new for me to do, but it’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful ways to see the Grand Canyon and only a small number of people a year get a permit to do this trip. It’s going to be a oncein-a-lifetime experience!”
sara sampaio “Because of my work schedule, I always make plans last-minute and with spontaneity. Aside from a wedding in Lebanon and planning my birthday celebrations, I’m still tossing around a few vacation ideas.”
“I’m planning on spending most of the time in New York City and the Hamptons. I’ll be going to Denmark for a long weekend to see my family—the summers there are so special. My favorite part about summer is the long evenings and early sunny mornings. In Denmark, it’s light out until around 10:30 p.m., which is amazing. I also really enjoy when New York City empties out in late July and in August. It makes it a lot easier to get a reservation at the restaurants with outdoor seating. The Hamptons are so great in the summer. My favorite thing to is to go fishing or basically anything that has to do with a boat. I can’t wait for summer! Hurry!”
“I’ll spend a few days in my boutique hotel, Casa Sua Lanzarote, in Spain. I reserved it just for me, my friends, and family, so we can all spend a few days together. It’s the only time of the year that I can have some quality time with them and disconnect. Casa Sua Lanzarote is the perfect place to do it. It’s located in the middle of nowhere, right on the beach, and the space is a true paradise. I also might go to Bulgari hotel in Bali. I have never been, and I always try to discover new places. I visit amazing places for work, but on holidays, I have the opportunity to become a local. I love that feeling.”

grace elizabeth “My boyfriend and I plan on taking a road trip across the West Coast. Starting in California, we want to visit Lake Tahoe, Yosemite Valley, and Big Sur. From there, we’ll drive through Nevada, stopping along the Fly Geyser and Lehman Caves on our way to Arizona. I will finally get to hike the Grand Canyon, see Lake Powell, and Page! Next stop: Utah, where I have so many places to check off my bucket list, like Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and The Narrows. Packs and packs of camera film later, we’ll end up in Colorado viewing the breathtaking Mesa Verde National Park. I’ve traveled all over the world, yet I’ve hardly seen anything in America, so it’s time to explore my own country. After the road trip, we’ll hop on a plane to Jacksonville, Florida, just in time for my birthday gift—I’m seeing Brad Paisley in concert. Then, we’ll drive to my hometown, where we’ll spend some time with my family and visit my town’s beautiful natural springs. The rest of the summer is kind of up in the air. We might go to Europe or find ourselves by a beach.”
Joy Corrigan “I’m going to Lake Powell with my friends for my summer trip! We’ll be staying on a house boat for a week and spending the days wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and inner tubing on a G23 sports boat. One really cool thing about Lake Powell is that it’s the secondlargest man-made reservoir and provides water for agriculture and human consumption to the Four Corners region of the country. It is also home to several endangered fish species—protecting endangered species is my life’s passion, and that’s why my line, Naked Species, donates 10 percent of all profits to organizations working to protect them.”
Sif Saga “I will be shooting an indie film in Florida, which I have been looking forward to all winter. I am also going to Iceland this summer for my big sister’s wedding. I will get to see my whole family, and it’s not often anymore that I get to spend a good couple of days with the whole family. I’m grateful. This will definitely be a summer to remember!”
“From May to October, I’m based in Warwickshire, England, with my four horses and trainer, Olympian Laura Kraut. Usually, I’m on the road in Europe every weekend traveling for competitions. Sometimes we head to small, quaint towns in Belgium and the Netherlands and other times to big cities, like Paris and London for the Global Champions Tour. It is a nonstop summer, but it’s so rewarding to work hard as an athlete and spend time with the horses.”
Talita von Furstenberg “I’m going with my family along Italy’s Amalfi Coast in July.”

"I’m going to Venice,
Italy, for my good friend Coco Brandolini d’Adda’s birthday. My sister, Ashley, is coming with me, and we’re staying at the Gritti Palace. But we’re going to Capri first for the Zimmermann store opening. I cannot wait!”
Danielle Herrington “I’m planning on going to Mexico for a nice family vacation toward the end of August, right before Fashion Week. As for the rest of the summer, if I decide to go anywhere else, it’ll be a quick, super-last-minute trip.”
“Montauk, baby! It’s always Montauk. Maybe there will be some travel mixed in there, but we’ve been traveling a lot, so in the summer, we just like to be in Montauk.”
“No official vacation plans yet, but I’ve never been to Nashville and hope to visit this summer! I’m looking forward to going to this musical city. Electric Light Orchestra will have a concert there in July, so perhaps that’s a perfect excuse to go visit!”
Jordan and Zac Stenmark “The plan for the summer is Europe! We’re going to Sicily. We also want to get to the Maldives if there’s time.”

PRESENTER TO FREDERIC ASPIRAS “Even saying his full name, as the rock-star artist he has become, I find myself thinking, no. He’s not just in my eyes the greatest hair artist in the world. He’s the brother I never had, and I call him Freddie.… That man sitting right there has picked me up off the floor and told me I’m strong and can persevere more times than I could ever count. If I was on the floor, he was right there with me, and then he’d pick me up and work his mastery on my hair and say, ‘Look at yourself. You are strong. You can do this. This is where you belong.’ And Freddie, I am here today to tell you that this is where you belong.”

She’s a hairdresser; she’s an immigrant from Vietnam. She’s a woman, a business owner who saved every single penny to start her own business. I am the American dream.… It is to fight hard. It is to work through all your adversities. It is to fight, it is to demand, it is to believe in yourself, and I wouldn’t be here tonight without my chosen family, my friends, who are here tonight also. Without them, this could not happen.”

“We went to this school called Crossroads, and there was an alleyway [near the school]. I remember Kate one day walking down the alley and she’s in this little dress, and I’m like, ‘What’s happening?’ All we wanted to do at that time was dress like Courtney Love. We all thought we were in Hole. Kate sort of started that era at school. She was wearing this tiny little slip dress that was completely see-through. All of us had backpacks and big T-shirts and looked crazy, and I’m like, ‘What’s happening?’ and she says, ‘I was just suspended and asked to go home.’ I’m like, ‘Why?’ She’s like, ‘My dress is too short and see-through. How rude is that?’ Kate was always ahead of her time, always in something cute.”

“We live in a world right now where everyone’s hustling for something. We all want to make something because we want to be up here. If I was to give anything back about my experience in this, is that authenticity is everything. If you believe in something, believe in yourself—that’s the most rewarding part. Whether it becomes the most successful business, or just a business that makes you happy. Authenticity, that’s where it all comes from.”

Fast-forward a few months to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund luncheon where I had the opportunity to wear my first Monse look—a deconstructed, off-theshoulder shirt and very high-waisted, tailored pants, despite being newly pregnant. I frankly have never felt cooler. That’s deserving of an award in and of itself.”

He was like, ‘You want to smoke?’ I was like, ‘Cool,’ and we smoked. He told me he was a model and I was like, ‘What’s that?” Then I met Stella [Maxwell], then I met my agent, Ali Kavoussi. I really appreciate him. My life changed that day. My whole life changed. It’s kind of crazy going from being homeless to [extravagant] dinners. Coming into adulthood, having a child. Early on the goal was to make people feel their very best selves. That’s the job.… No matter what size, age, gender— whatever you are, you should feel fabulous in how you present yourself to the world. That is so important. the times square edition You only open The Times Square EDITION once in a lifetime, so Ian Schrager and his team went big. Really big! The new hotel is the brainchild of Schrager in partnership with Marriott International and brings the hotelier back to the neighborhood where he first went from the clubs to the hospitality business, opening the Paramount and the Royalton in the 1990s. For its coming-out party, the new EDITION invited a mix of fashion A-listers, such Hailey Bieber, Cara Delevingne, and Kendall Jenner to mingle with iconic New Yorkers like Susanne Bartsch, Andy Cohen, and Norma Kamali. The evening began with cocktails and an elegant dinner at the Terrace Restaurant at EDITION. The stunning destination is helmed by John Fraser of Narcissa and Narcbar fame, and makes him the first Michelin-starred chef in Times Square. After dinner, guests moved floors to the Paradise Club, which is the EDITION’s cabaret space. The night saw a performance by Nile Rodgers and Chic, and a “surprise” performance by the legendary Diana Ross, who sang a few of her classics hits, including “The Boss” and “Upside Down.” At the end of their set, the legendary performers brought Schrager on stage to toast the man of the hour for bringing some joie back to Times Square.

As part of a week of events celebrating the opening of the new Times Square EDITION hotel, Ian Schrager commissioned a public-facing art installation in collaboration with multimedia design studio Sila Sveta that pays homage to Alexander McQueen’s iconic Spring 1999 fashion show. Specifically, the moment when model Shalom Harlow was spun on a wooden platform as two giant robotic arms sprayed her and her pristine white dress with black and yellow paint. Schrager’s version took fashion insiders like Alex Lundqvist, Faith Lynch, Eric Rutherford, Ty Hunter, and Ashley Haas and put them in white Edition-branded jumpsuits before placing them on a circular dais where they were spun around as two robotic arms covered them in purple, orange, and black paint. Videos of the participants ran on the massive Jumbotron billboard on the corner of Broadway and West 47th Street.

TORY BURCh’s scented SUNSET SOIRée
“Who knew all this was up here?” mused one guest as she exited the elevator on the boutique’s third floor to discover a candlelit rooftop terrace. It was festooned with topiaries and anchored by a roaring fireplace; two elegant dining tables decked out in Tory Burch’s décor collection were blooming with Eric Buterbaugh’s lush, organic arrangements of orange poppy, vetiver, and peony, which nodded to the notes of the fragrance. Nichelle Hines—athlete, spinning sensation, and founder of Cycle House—was among the first to arrive, and was spotted checking out a chic track suit from Tory Sport as servers circulated with canapés and glasses of Whispering Angel rosé. Erica Hood, whose dance-inspired HoodFit method is shaping some of L.A.’s tautest bodies, stopped by the
fragrance bar to experience the three accords—colorful, feminine, and tomboy—that comprise Tory Burch’s signature fragrance. Hood discussed her brand’s rapid expansion, and we have good news for Hamptonites— she’s planning to grace the East End once again this summer, just when we need her most. Iridium Interiors’ Sara Haynes and Lisa Staugaard, stylist Jessica de Ruiter, Gabrielle Caunesil, The Hollywood Reporter’s Carol McColgin, C mag’s Kelly Atterton, and Idalia Salsamendi sat down to a delicious Croft Alley meal of baby kale salad with toasted shallots, Asian mint, citrus vinaigrette, and salmon confit. And because this was a Los Angeles affair, Hollywood was well-represented by the likes of Shooter star Shantel VanSanten, Hit the Floor’s Katherine Bailess, and Dear White People’s Logan Browning. Larsen Thompson was seated next to Rachel Tabb, and the two young talents had an only-inHollywood moment when they discovered that they share the same modeling and acting agents (Next Models and Abrams Artists Agency, respectively). The multitalented Kay Cannon, wearing a killer Tory Burch knit dress that she described as “rock-star
librarian,” arrived with producing partner Laverne McKinnon. The two met while working on the Netflix series Girlboss, which Cannon created and was show runner and McKinnon was executive producer; they recently formed K&L Productions, which has a firstlook deal with Sony Pictures Television. Up next for Cannon? Directing Camila Cabello in a must-see reimagining of Cinderella. Casting director Carmen Cuba, known for her work with Steven Soderbergh, Ridley Scott, and Oliver Stone, shared that she recently hit Coachella to premiere Guava Island, her producing debut for Amazon Studios. Starring Donald Glover and Rihanna, the film follows a Cuban musician as he sets out to build a music festival. As the evening drew to a close, business cards and Instagram handles were exchanged with abandon, and the women marveled over the custom engraved bottles of Tory Burch eau de parfum that served as place settings and gifts. “Let’s do this again soon!” was a common refrain. And when such a powerful, talented, and collaborative group of women come together, even more greatness is sure to ensue. Watch this space for further developments!

Big names from the worlds of fashion and equestrian show jumping came together for an exclusive, intimate soirée at GoldBar in Manhattan. Hosted by iconic American lifestyle brand Sam Edelman, the night served as an after-party for the Riders Masters Cup Draw Party in celebration of the annual Longines Masters of New York, the U.S. leg of the international equestrian show-jumping competition. The evening was a lavish affair, recalling the decadence of 1920s speakeasies, but with a modern twist. Guests including Georgina Bloomberg, Joey Wölffer, and others danced the night away to a live set by fashion model and DJ Pamela Tick, while donning coveted styles from the brand’s S/S ’19 collection. Meanwhile, influencers Madlena Kalinova and Ashley Haas were seen taking pictures for Instagram, and GoldBar’s glittering chandeliers and wall of edgy gold skulls provided an elegant setting for selfies. Mingling with the models were notable American equestrians—including Olympians McLain Ward and Lucy Davis—who were buzzing about the weekend’s upcoming competition against their European counterparts. The bartenders put on a show, juggling drink shakers while mixing craft cocktails. Other notable guests in attendance included EEM CEO and founder Christophe Ameeuw and equestrians Lillie Keenan and Olivier Philippaerts. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

Camila Morrone photographY by sebastian faena You and [photographer] Sebastian Faena have worked together a lot. How do you explain your chemistry? There aren’t a lot of Argentinians in this business, so there’s an instant connectivity between us. We’re able to make something that we want to make because we’re able to be sincere with each other. We cut the bulls**t, which I like. What was the day on set like? It was pouring rain and freezing, but we found a cool location at a skate park under a bridge. Did you get into any kind of character? I’m always in a character, a little bit, during a photo shoot. Sebastian wanted me to channel my masculinity
and be a little more badass and grunge in terms of my attitude. You’re starring in the latest Ramy Brook campaign. How did that come together? Sebastian sent me a message, explaining that he knew an awesome woman that he wanted me to meet. He said I would fall in love with her. He wanted me to meet them for a drink, and we ended up having a two-anda-half hour lunch. We bonded instantly. Ramy [Brook Sharp] is really easy to like! You’re going to the Cannes Film Festival with your new movie, Mickey and the Bear. I went two years ago, but not as part of the festival. I only attended one movie screening, and I was in
shock. As an actress, it’s kind of the dream to get into a festival like that. My film is in a tiny part of the festival—it’s not the main event, but it’s cool to be a part of it. I wanted to get in any way we could. I’m such a fan of the festival and the South of France. I’ll soak it in! Will you be bringing trunks of clothes? Hopefully, my stylist [Micah Schifman] will bring them! I don’t do well with that stuff—I just lost my Met Gala dress! It was in my suitcase, which I checked on the flight, and my luggage was lost. I won’t be making that mistake again. What’s your relationship like with him? We are very good co-workers! I am super honest FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

Do you see your parents often? I see my mom every day. My dad lives three hours away on a farm, but I try to talk to both of them 15 times a day on average. If my mom doesn’t answer, I call my dad!

and expressive with him, and he’s super honest and expressive with me. Style is very specific. It’s not fun to be uncomfortable, and it’s important to me to feel classy, attractive, elegant. I won’t wear something that someone else tells me to wear. What’s the scoop on the film? It’s a drama about a 17-year-old girl named Mickey and her father, Hank, who is also known as The Bear. They are quite poor, and living in the small town of Anaconda, Montana. The movie follows him as he comes back from the war and he has an opioid addiction. My character’s mother passed away from cancer, so she is the sole caretaker. My character’s father is her best friend but also kind of emotionally abusive. So Mickey is trying to escape and figure out her destiny. It’s quite sad; it tells a beautiful story about what happens when veterans come back from war. Who directed it? Annabelle Attanasio, a first-time female film director. She’s 26, graduated from NYU, wrote the script, and got it financed. I’m really proud of the film. Do you still go to auditions? I spend my life auditioning! I would love to be offered roles, but I’m not quite there yet. Soon! Do you get nervous? Every time I walk into an audition room, my stomach is in knots. I’ll always have that kick of adrenaline, which in a weird way makes me better, because I use that to my advantage. Who would you like to work with? If Martin Scorsese offered me a part in something, I think I would die. I would love to work with Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, Emily Blunt, Kate Winslet, and anyone on Game of Thrones at this moment. Have you been obsessed with GOT? I’ve watched every episode. How closely do you follow your IG account? I’m not consistent with my posting. I might go three weeks without sharing, and then post three things in one day. I look crazy! Unfortunately, I’m on my Instagram every day scrolling through my feed. Most of us are guilty of this. It’s definitely not my most admirable habit. I don’t really read the comments—they usually end up hurting my feelings, so I just try and avoid that. How do you typically spend your summer? My birthday is June 16th, so that’s at the start of summer. I usually stay in town and continue to work until mid-July, and then things tend to slow down in our industry, so I try to travel. I try to go somewhere new every year! This summer, I’m going to be in Europe, because it’s so easy to hop over to new places. I’ve never been to Tuscany, Amsterdam, Prague, Germany, Iceland, or Spain. I still have quite a lot of territory to cover! How often do you get to Argentina? I was just there for the first time in three years. I used to be really good about going twice a year when I was FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

I wanted to pick a color that didn’t mean it was only a women’s[wear] company or only a men’s[wear] company. Orange can be a color for any gender, and I always loved the Hermès shade—it’s so sophisticated. Orange represents something bright and happy. When you walk into a place that’s a bright, happy color, it gets you in the right mood. You manage to have quite a few snacks on hand. I’m a big fan of Gummy bears—they’re my favorite snack. I don’t know if you’ve been to Economy Candy [in Manhattan], but you can buy everything by color.
I also like Starburst. I really like the pink ones the best, but I get orange for the company. Sounds like you have a sweet tooth! I love candy, unfortunately. I [also] like Swedish Fish and Mike & Ike—everything chewy. We recently saw you on stage at Bloomingdale’s discussing female empowerment. Why is that topic important to you? It’s really important that women have respect for other women in the industry. It empowers them to do something great—and that can mean so many different

Why does the color speak to you? When I started the company, I was in my bedroom, playing with different names, logos, colors, and fonts.

“ things. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in the business world. When you see other women thriving and being successful, happy, and multitasking, it’s inspirational. That’s basically how I grew up in life, and it’s important now to pay it forward and help out in any way I can. Do you get nervous when you’re on stage? In the beginning, when I used to do stuff like that, I was definitely nervous. But [at the Bloomingdale’s event], I wasn’t. I was surrounded by a lot of friends and interesting women, and many of them brought their daughters. Even my parents were there! What was some of the feedback that you got after the panel? Everyone thought it was interesting; my friends and family were proud. What are your sisters like? My older sister always beat her own drum. She was really interesting. She was into vintage shopping before it was even a thing, and she always loved going through my mother and grandmother’s jewelry. On top of being smart—she’s a psychologist—she’s written two books and done stuff on TV. She’s always been hugely motivated, and so that was an influence for me. She also included me in everything she did, which was nice, because we were three grades apart. When she was a senior, I was a freshman and you don’t always want to bring your little sister out with you. But she didn’t mind. We grew up in New Jersey, but she always came into the city, so I felt safe coming in with her. What about your younger sister? We’re closer in age, and we became the best of friends when I left for college. We did everything together. She’s really supportive. My first trunk show ever was at her house in New Jersey. She’s very
it’s really important that women have respect for other women.… it empowers them to do something great—and that can mean so many different things.” stylish, too, so when she gets dressed and her friends see her, they love what she’s wearing, and that helps promote Ramy Brook. How did you spend Memorial Day as a kid? I grew up in a small town called Chatham, and everything was focused around it. We grew up with a parade and block parties. I played a lot of tennis growing up; I was also on the swim and diving team. We never traveled anywhere, but we were always surrounded by family and friends. What do you plan on doing with your kids this Memorial Day weekend? We go to the Hamptons every year. My oldest son will be back from college, so we really get to enjoy our family time out there. My husband loves to cook, so a lot of our weekends are about eating and cooking. We play golf, too. It’s mellow. Nothing is planned to the T. I have an open-door policy with the kids and their friends, so if they want to have people over, we welcome it. When you have guests who are new to the Hamptons, where do you take them? We love going to The Palm East Hampton—good food, good vibe. We also go shopping in Southampton,
because there are so many stores there. The boutiques in East Hampton are fun, too, but Southampton has so many different types of stores. I always like to throw in an exercise class, too—either SoulCycle or Tracy Anderson. What can we expect from your upcoming collections? Art and travel always inspire me. It may be just through a walk in a museum or something I see in the street. But living in New York, there’s so much to inspire me. Spring represents a time where the sun is shining, the weather is nice, and you can show a little more skin. We’re going to design pieces that let women go out and take them from day to night. Are there any specific styles that you’re going to be introducing? We’re breaking into more of the cut-and-sew category, and we’ll also be showing some sweaters. We’ve been dipping our toe in that for the past couple seasons, but going forward, you’ll see a lot more of it. We’ll also have more casual pieces that go with the denim. Any other expansion plans? We are close to opening up a new store. It’s not official—I don’t want to jinx myself—but hopefully, it will happen soon. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

[Inspiration] could be a persian rug, a trip to kenya, or something as simple as the flowers in my backyard.”
First and foremost, how did you two meet? Phoebe Vickers: Purna and I were paired as roommates freshman year in college. While we never planned to start a brand at the time, there was definitely a shared lament over our tiny closet space. Perhaps that was a hint toward our future. What are your professional backgrounds? Purna Khatau: I was a women’s buyer at Harvey Nichols. Vickers: I worked in advertising and as a travel and fashion photographer. What inspired you to start a brand? Khatau: We both fundamentally felt that there was a gap in the market for the kind of clothes we
wanted to wear on vacation—day dresses that could easily transition to evening that were timeless and sophisticated but grounded in a playful holiday spirit. What started as such has now evolved into being a year-round brand, while the core of the brand DNA retains that spirit of adventure and fun. Where did the Rhode Resort name come from? Vickers: When we started, the collection was really grounded in true resortwear. In Greek mythology, Rhode was a sea nymph who was also known as the goddess of the island Rhodes, so it made sense to us to name the brand Rhode. We also both honestly love the name Rhode, from a phonetic and a graphic design perspective, too. Where do you source your prints? Khatau: We develop all our prints in-house with inspiration drawn from all over the place. To be totally honest, they really depend on my mood and what I am feeling at that moment in time—it could be a Persian rug, a trip to Kenya, or something as simple as the flowers in my backyard. How many products are currently in the line? Khatau: We have around 30 styles per season and
are now showing five collections a year. Where can we find Rhode in the Hamptons? Vickers: Kirna Zabête, Intermix, and Cabana. Who are your biggest and best supporters? Vickers: Our totally loyal customers who continue to shop with us and are always sharing their moments on social media, whether by tagging the brand or using our hashtag, #OnTheRHODE. As far as our more visible customers, we have been extremely lucky to have the support of so many talented fashion editors and celebrities from the very start, such as Laura Brown, Tracee Ellis Ross, Busy Philipps, and Beyoncé. How do you hope to grow the brand in the future? Khatau: We see the brand really evolving into a true lifestyle brand. At the moment, we’re working on expanding into shoes and bags, which we are excited about. Stay tuned! What are your favorite spots to visit when you come out East? Vickers: Our first stop will be the Fairview farmstand— they have the best cheese! I also love Sagg Main Beach for a morning swim, followed by lunch at the bar at Estia’s Little Kitchen. With whom did you collaborate on the book? Camille Coy wrote the book with me, and it was great because I’ve known her forever. She’s a good friend of my son. She grew up in my house and my garden, so she knows my career. It was so easy to write with her, because she would remember things that I didn’t. I would start to say something and she would remember what I was talking about. She’s an impeccable writer. I published the book with Pointed Leaf Press’ Suzanne Slesin, whom I met at a designer dinner in Paris, in 2014. She said she had a publishing house, and we should do a book together. I knew her work because she was a writer for The New York Times, and I would always read her stories in the Style section. It had to be with her, because she was the first one to propose the idea to me and I really admire her work. The book is really inspiring… The whole idea is to make people excited about landscaping, color, and sustainability. We want people who already love gardens to imagine more color, more textures, and more variety. You mention in the book that Mad Magazine and the movie Chicken Run are two of your creative influences. It’s more the spirit of the magazine—it’s about making things simple. In landscaping, we can encounter challenging situations, because the spaces are multiple levels or not that big. The illustrations in Mad Magazine make all the facts of life look so simple. You write about the benefits of the color green. We can see something like 33 different shades of green—you can see each tone differently. Even in a vast area of grass, you can see different little patches with different colors. What’s your favorite color? [Laughs] Green! I had a feeling you were going to say that! How do you feel about flowers? They are the light of the landscaping. Flowers bring luminosity to the landscaping. They smile at you! Color in the landscape is the most beautiful thing.
“ a l l i m ag e s co u rt e sy
the whole idea is to make people excited about landscaping, color, and sustainability. we want people who already LOve gardens to imagine more color, more textures, and more variety.”
What’s the premise of the book? I didn’t want to do a typical design book that showed one project after another. I wanted to make a book about the way that I see a project. I go to a job site, look at the vistas, and think about how we can contour the eye as it’s looking to the landscaping. Then I return to my office with the concept design. I wanted the reader to have an idea of the steps that I have in my vision to implement a landscaping project.
How is the book broken down into different chapters? We broke down the book by what I see and envision in each project. In the introduction, we explain where I’m from and go over ideas on design. My house shows how personal my design is, and then we go on to show everything from vistas to blooms to borders to stone to water. The landscapes in the book span throughout the 26 years I’ve been in the Hamptons doing landscaping, and I took most of the photographs.
What’s your own backyard like? My property was carved through the years, and it has changed. I designed the pool to be offset to all the rooms in the house, so when you look out, you see the vista of landscape and the pool doesn’t interrupt the view. In the winter months, when the pool is covered, you see the vista without seeing the pool. The front has many different tones of green, and in back, we have a rose garden all in pink, and a perennial garden with multiple colors. I have a lot of evergreens to keep the house warm, too. Sounds beautiful. I love it. We even had a tour group from England come to visit my garden. It was great. What’s hot this summer in the world of landscaping? Technology is really helping. We even have irrigation systems that you can control by your phone, which prevents wastage. What’s new at Unlimited Earth Care? Every year, we work with new and upcoming designers from South America and Europe. We bring their designs for the outdoors, such as sculptures and birdhouses. We’re always searching for upcoming artists. What do you think makes a good garden? Love. You’ve got to love it to make it good. I try to do that with my design. I like to inspire people! In honor of WorldPride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which kicked off the modern gay-rights movement, DKNY is partnering with the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), America’s oldest and largest LGBT youth services organization. The Daily Summer talked to DonChristian Jones, a teaching artist in HMI’s Music Masters program, to find out more about the organization and the essential work they do.

HMI is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Why is the work you do still so important? While LGBT rights and protections have come a long way since HMI was founded, there are still so many young people who vitally need the services we offer. Whether it’s a hot meal, a shower, and counseling from a mental health professional, or just a fun place to hang out, meet friends, and work on your art, the services we offer make a profound difference in the lives of underserved LGBT young people. What is the Music Masters program? Music Masters was founded around the overwhelming youth-led desire to practice, perform, and produce through music. In all the youth spaces I’ve traversed over the years, music has always been the most evident and efficient means of engagement. What is your role within the Music Masters program at HMI? As a facilitator, I provide the space for young people to engage with music, whether that be through performance, songwriting, production, or critical music theory. We practice, cypher, make beats, record. For me, it’s imperative that the space be free from judgment, safe and brave, as participants allow for their own creative processes. There’s no wrong way to make music, so it’s simply a matter of helping them find their own voice. Tell us about your partnership with DKNY. HMI began working with DKNY in fall 2018. The idea of doing a Pride campaign for June 2019 was introduced, with the concept and creative being led by HMI’s young people. Throughout the fall and winter, DKNY and HMI worked to outline the partnership, and developed a campaign that was truly representative of HMI’s LGBT young people and its mission, as well as DKNY’s brand and audience. DKNY and its staff have been and continue to be engaging and active in volunteer opportunities, donating goods to HMI’s pantry program and attending events and fund-raisers. DKNY’s parent company, G-III, has been a longtime supporter of HMI and has been involved with the organization since 2006. What’s the best way for people to get involved in the work HMI is doing? There are many ways that people can get involved with HMI! There are volunteer opportunities for both individuals or corporate/community groups—from mock interviews, to tutoring, to serving dinner to our young people. There are also a number of youth programs, workshops, panels, and activities that happen throughout the year for holidays, awareness days, etc. Individuals and groups can also lead fundraising campaigns on social media, initiate a volunteer match grant at work, if applicable, or donate goods to HMI’s pantry program. WorldPride is taking place in New York City for the first time this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and the beginning of the modern gay-rights movement. What does “gay pride” mean in 2019? WorldPride is hugely significant to us and our broader community, as it is emblematic of New York’s role in the movement and its history. The modern-day movement, I believe, has shifted in scope from one of “gay rights and liberation” to one of reverence for the intersectional realities and pioneers of the movement. Why are Pride Month and the Pride parade important in 2019? Something we see all the time with our youth is that

being able to walk down the street as your true and authentic self…can really make you feel like part of a community.”
Watches, $95 each
Everybody Scream! representation matters. Seeing stories that mirror yours, seeing people who look or identify like you, can be a life-changing experience. And being able to walk down the street as your true and authentic self, in a world that often tries to put you down and dim that light, to be able to walk proudly in front of millions of people who are cheering for you, can really make you feel like part of a community. Like you are seen. What sort of special programming does HMI have planned to celebrate Pride and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall? Youth Pride Fest, we march and table at every borough Pride; we throw our School’s Out fund-raiser, as well as month-long special programming on-site. And, of course, we’ll have a float in the Pride parade. Come out and cheer on our young people! What do the next 40 years look like for HMI? The foundation of HMI’s strategic direction is to package, evaluate, and disseminate our best practice for LGBT youth services. The ultimate objective is to change the national landscape of youth services to be safe, inclusive, and affirming for LGBT youth.
To celebrate WorldPride and the launch of its Pride capsule collection, DKNY is partnering with Big Gay Ice Cream to create a custom, co-branded ice cream sandwich. The sweet treat will be sold for two weeks during Pride Month at all of Big Gay Ice Cream’s New York City locations, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Hetrick-Martin Institute.
All Aboard the Party Bus! DKNY has big plans for the WorldPride March on Sunday, June 30! They’ve secured a double-decker bus to pick up and drop off passengers along the parade route. The bus will be wrapped in a repeating rainbow DKNY logo with a DJ booth on the top level and a street team to hand out Big Gay Ice Cream and pridethemed temporary tattoos and bandanas to riders and passing pedestrians.

The maidstone’s
Glorious Decade
a l l i m ag e s co u rt e sy
The Maidstone Hotel has been the jewel of East Hampton since 2008, when hotelier Jenny Baker and filmmaker Jonathan Baker began modernizing the 150-yearold property. To celebrate its 10th anniversary The Daily Summer spoke to the Bakers about what sets their hotel apart, and how the Maidstone—with its champagne bar, five-star restaurant, and celebrity fans—has become one of the chicest destinations in the Hamptons. The building has such a history! What drew you to purchasing it 10 years ago? JONATHAN BAKER: At the end of 2008, Jenny wanted to buy a hotel in New York, and this property had come on the market. How did you envision the atmosphere? JENNY BAKER: I wanted it to feel like home. The restaurant used to be called The Living Room. Originally we called it c/o the Maidstone, which was the brand we had created for other hotels we had at the time. We made sure there was a dining menu that covered everything from early morning to late night. We had Xboxes in all the rooms, along with coffee and tea makers. We also purposely put in a lot of books; many of the rooms have fireplaces. What other homey details did you guys add? JENNY: We catered to kids and dogs. We taught the staff to treat them like clients—we taught them to get down on the kids’ level, which broke the ice. We purposely situated toys in places where they weren't obtrusive, and we allowed children to have their own experience. The same with dogs—right away, the staff brings them a water bowl. Jonathan and I are both dog owners and we have kids, but we still like to go to amazing places. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice all that just because you have kids. What other “firsts” have you had? JONATHAN: We put free bicycles out front! JENNY: Most of the hotels out here have taken after that now, which is great. But nobody had them at the time. How have you updated the hotel over the years? JONATHAN: We just changed the colors of the hotel to salamander green. And we’ve expanded the bar to double the size. We are a champagne bar that caters to the sexy thirtysomethings or late twenties. When you’re done partying and you want a place to hang out, we’re the only hotel in the East Hampton. We’ve had more celebrities stay here than at any place. Like who? JONATHAN: Bill and Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep, James Franco, Katie Holmes, Stevie Nicks, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, Will Smith.… We’re not presently associated with them, but we’ve been on and off with the Hamptons International Film Festival. We do a lot of premieres at The Maidstone in the summer. Last year, we did Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Robert Downey Jr., who lives nearby, uses our hotel as overflow for his own house. Tell us more about the art collection! JONATHAN: We rotate art in our common space. We’ve had Jacob Felländer, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Slim Aarons, and themes such as Studio 54. We usually bring the artist, creator, or the art gallery out to the Hamptons for a sit-down dinner. The Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton has curated a lot for us in the past. What will be on display this summer? JONATHAN: Right now, everything is from our personal collections. In the men’s bathroom, there’s a special little tribute to Hugh Hefner. I was good friends with him. I played cards with Hugh every Wednesday, and we saw movies together every Sunday for 30 years. There’s also a secret barn door, when you open it up, you’ll find Bunny Money [$100 bills with the Playboy bunny as Jefferson] inside. Did Hugh Hefner give any good advice when you opened The Maidstone? JONATHAN: Hefner gave me the sense of what a romantic notion is—how to tell a story and make it romantic. It’s important to put things around you that
ONE OF A KIND Art-covered walls and branded complimentary bikes make The Maidstone unique in East Hampton.

you really want to enjoy. The photo art and champagne bar are part of that for me. Tell us about your restaurant—are there any updates to the menu this season? JONATHAN: Our restaurant is five-star, slow cooking. It’s chef Ian Lichtenstein Lowell’s second year with us. We have two sets of menus—one being a seafood menu, with giant shrimps, crab claws, and crab legs—and our after-hours menu. We do two-pound lobsters with corn and minced jalapeños. This year, we’re doing table-side guacamole and cotton candy. Pink or blue cotton candy for girls and boys. We are also having a sundae tray. Everything is bought from local vendors, from the wine to the food. We try to be organic. We haven’t had water bottles or straws on the property for 10 years. We’ve been ahead of that curve for a long time. What other ways have you been making The Maidstone sustainable? JENNY: We purposely worked on portions. We didn’t want to overserve people and waste food. The same thing with napkins. We removed all the one-time articles so that the guests will have to ask for it as opposed to us overserving it. Recycling is a big deal, too. I also give away all that we can to charity and to people who need it. If guests don’t want us to change the towels every day, we don’t. And we put in charging stations for electric cars. We love people who choose cars that are better for the environment—they get the best parking spots! Have there been challenges to going eco-friendly? JENNY: Ten years [ago], it was hard. When we went with this eco-friendly laundry detergent the staff said, “The guests won’t want this. This won’t work.” We had to educate them that it was really important for all the landscape and cleaning materials to be eco-friendly. The other part was training the staff to gracefully exit
discussions, especially with removing the plastic bottles. We had some guests in the beginning who wanted Evian, and they couldn’t believe they couldn’t get it. We trained our staff that this is a policy we decided to adhere to, because it’s really important to decrease all the plastic waste in the world. It’s okay to want Evian, we just don’t serve it here. We have an amazing water filtration system. Now, our staff is empowered by it. Are you introducing any new amenities this summer? JONATHAN: The beach butler program! We put lunch and champagne in a picnic basket and then we drive you to the beach, and set up your chairs and umbrella. What are your goals for the next 10 years? How do you want to expand? JENNY: We know [the Hamptons is] amazing all-yearround, but we’d like for more people to discover that. We want to make it relevant all year long, with cultural happenings, interesting champagnes, wine tastings, and visiting chefs. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

The book is a fun read! Thanks! There’s a lot for everybody. It’s not just recipes—there are party tips, crafts, playlists, outfit ideas, beautiful pictures.… It’s really a seasonal entertaining guide with 106 recipes, 16 party themes, 300 party tips, and 250 photos. It’s a glimpse into the way Neil [Patrick Harris, Burtka’s husband] and I like to entertain. Nothing is fabricated. I threw every one of those parties [featured in the book]. I threw a party in the morning with the kids and a party in the afternoon with the adults. It was an all-day affair. I had my friend Danielle Levitt, an amazing editorial and modern-art photographer, be a fly on the wall. She just shot us as we went and partied our night away. How did you break it down into sections? I wanted to do a seasonal book. I shop at the farmer’s market, and I never would buy a tomato or strawberry in winter. I love to cook when the produce is at its finest. We all have an obligation as humans to support our local farmers, and support things that are coming out of the ground at the time they are coming up. I also wanted to celebrate the little days, and not take life for granted. It’s important to have fun in everything you do, and enjoy the time you are on this planet with your loved ones. Given all the things that are happening in this world, we all need to take a break, grab our loved ones, and have a laugh. It sounds cliché, but it’s true! What’s your favorite kind of party to throw? I like a group effort. I don’t like to wait on everyone hand and foot. I like it when the guests take initiative— shaking cocktails, playing DJ, coming early to put the table together. If it’s a group effort, people are more invested—and in turn, have more fun! You’re quite the expert in summer entertaining, in particular. The Summer SOULstice [chapter] is all about cooking for a large group or a charity. Why not cook to raise funds for your local animal shelter or retirement home? There are so many tips about how to pay it forward. To prep for Memorial Day weekend, read the Sunday Funday chapter. It covers the summer barbecue to a T. There are great recipes for grilled ribs with cola barbecue sauce and grilled potato and leek salad with salsa verde vinaigrette. What are some of your entertaining essentials? Always go the extra mile, whether it’s through flower arrangements, tablescapes, or take-home gifts. Those details make people feel special. Another great party tip: Once the party starts, don’t freak out! Have fun! Don’t stay in the kitchen the whole time worrying about the meal. If you need reinforcements, call people in! Any rules? For any meal with our kids, there’s a no cell phone policy. One of my biggest pet peeves is going out to dinner and seeing a family on their iPads and cell phones. Why are you even at the restaurant? You might as well be at home in front of the TV. I know places now, even bars that are checking cell phones at the door. There’s a fun game you can play where you all put your cell phones in the middle of the table and the first person to grab for their phone during the meal has to do the dishes. Did you always plan to do a book? No! I’ve been an actor my whole life. I’ve done Edward Albee plays, I worked for Sam Mendes on Broadway, and I used to dance. This has been a real eye-opener! I ended up cooking because my mom passed away
suddenly, and I couldn’t deal with the rejection of Los Angeles and acting. I thought about what else makes me happy—I love cooking and trying new recipes. I ended up going to culinary school, and from there, amazing things started falling from the sky. I Instagrammed a lot of what I made with my kids, people said I should do a book, and here we are! You and Neil spend a lot of time on the East End. Any favorite spots? I really love Serene Green. They’ve got some of the best produce in all of the Hamptons. LT Burger in Sag Harbor is fun. Le Bilboquet is really nice and right on the water. My kids love BuddhaBerry. The beauty of the Hamptons is that you get to go to farmer’s markets and cook your own meals and be with people. I always love cooking in. Switching gears—you were a producer of the Wigstock event last year. I went to the original Wigstock, and I said to Neil, “Drag is so big right now, and you don’t ever get to see these girls do what they want to do.” RuPaul has them in such a bubble of what she wants them to do, but you never really get to see what these girls are famous for. I called Lady Bunny, and said it was time to bring back Wigstock, and so that’s what we did. Drag is more relevant than ever. When we decided to put the festival together, we got together with HBO and hired Chris Moukarbel to direct and make a documentary about Wigstock and the relaunch of the festival. It’s a really fun film! Wig airs on HBO on Tuesday, June 18th. Are you going to do it again this year? Here’s hoping! It’s been a wild ride. Bunny wants to do it, but nothing has been announced yet. What are you looking forward to this summer? Neil and I have been asked to go to Tel Aviv for World Pride, so we’re going there for a bit. I’m going to be doing some stuff for Pride in New York, too. We’re going to hang out with our kids, check up on the construction of our Hamptons house, and do some traveling. And we’ll probably go with Elton [John] and David [Furnish] to Nice on our annual trip with the kids! FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M
