You’re like one of my daughters. We feel so blessed to have you on a team where we trust one another and travel the world together, and that’s really rare. You have a mean social media game. I used to feel really bad for you. She’s not living her life! Every single second you’re posting, posting. You have all engines blaring at the same time, and then I realized when I got busier and you started traveling all the time with Kendall [Jenner], it really works out well, because you’re like a human nanny cam. OVERDUE CATCH-UP!

With Joseph Altuzarra, designer extraordinaire and host committee member for HMI’s annual School’s Out fund-raiser, which will be held in East Hampton on June 16.

Why do you support HMI? The work that HetrickMartin Institute is doing is so important. I’m happy to say that I have had the incredible privilege of growing up in a family and environment that not only accepted me but loved me for who I was, and I believe every young person deserves a safe and supportive environment, too!

What do you remember about

the last day of school? Growing up in Paris, traditionally the last day of school is a day where you can run around the school and disrupt other classes. It’s a celebratory mood but also a little bittersweet.

Summer plans? I’m looking forward to spending time in the garden and relaxing with my husband, family, and friends.

Martha Stewart is doing the flowers

for School’s Out. What’s your favorite kind of floral arrangement? Right now I’m planting my garden in the Hamptons, and I’ve been really drawn to lavender and rosemary. I love the idea of mixing flowers and herbs!

Do you own any books by Martha? Yes, I do! The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook is a staple.

5

The Reformation Beach House is returning to East Hampton (85 Main Street) to keep you (and your 15-year-old cousin) fully outfitted for Surf Lodge.

Aerin has taken over the former Monogram Shop at 19 Newtown Lane in East Hampton.

6

What’s new? Visiting our Kode With Klossy summer camps is at the top of my list. We’re hosting 50 camps in 25 cities across the country, so I’ll be visiting as many as my schedule allows. Outside of Kode With Klossy, I always try to set aside a couple weeks of the year for personal travel. In the summer, that usually includes a beach vacation with my family. What SPF number do you use when you go to the beach? Skincare and skin protection are so essential, not only for your beauty routine but for your overall health. I always have at least SPF 15 on my face, even in the winter months. When I’m spending extensive time outside, I make sure to wear an SPF between 30 and 50. Are you a one-piece or a two-piece kind of girl? Both! Right now, I’m loving Reformation’s new swimwear and have my eye on a few highwaisted swim sets in fun, classic patterns—polka dot and red gingham in particular. Did you go to camp? Yes! I went to a sleepaway camp once in the middle of Missouri. I remember feeling incredibly nervous leading up to it, and barely sleeping at the thought of being homesick. It ended up being a blast—I loved roasting s’mores and trying out every outdoor activity imaginable!

t! dish fes dall With Ken Jenner!

What’s your favorite thing to cook? “I just started this thing—I hired a chef to come over once or twice a week to teach me a new dish when I’m in town. Right now, I’m totally obsessed with baking. I make pumpkin bread from scratch, as well as blueberry cupcakes, regular cupcakes, and cookies. Next, I want to bake bread!”

PRIVET BLOOM is unlike any other floral aroma, touching upon crisp, green notes unexpected in a fine fragrance. Captured from the ever-fragrant and beautiful privet privacy hedges dotted all over the elegant Hamptons. Encompassing the essence of nature’s beauty and transcending the seasons – with touches of White Hyacinth, Lily of the Valley and Jasmine making it the perfect fragrance all year round. www.hamptonsuncare.com

MEANWHILE, AT THE MONTAUK LIGHTHOUSE…

SEAFOOD SURPRISE! Hooked, a new take-out seafood spot, has moved into the former Red Hook Lobster Pound space. It’s the brainchild of Brian and Gillian Mooney—Brian is a 24-year veteran of the Clam Bar, and Gillian co-owned Herb’s Market. Expect chowders, Montauk pearl oysters, local clams and steamers, and baby back ribs and burgers. It will be open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. 34 S. Etna Ave., Montauk, hookedmtk.com

BREAKING NEWS!

Effective this ’s weekend, Duryea n ve se en op will be lunch days a week for er and dinn .

MEXICAN FOOD 411!

The good people behind Nick & Toni’s, TownLine BBQ, La Fondita, and Rowdy Hall have a new treat in store—Coche Comedor, in the space formerly occupied by Honest Diner (that’s conveniently right next to La Fondita in Amagansett). Expect Mexican food from all regions, made on a wood-burning grill and rotisserie.

BOTTOMS UP!

FIXATING ON FOOD! With Daily fave Nicole Miller Any restaurants you’re excited to try? I go to Dopo la Spiaggia, Baron’s Cove, and Le Bilboquet frequently. I also like Wölffer Kitchen and Lulu’s. And I always start Memorial Day weekend with dinner at Sunset Beach!

You’re a fabulous cook—any favorite dishes?

My go-to summer dish is always Vietnamese summer rolls, but I’m planning to expand this year and experiment FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

with some Asian fish dishes. I go clamming a lot, so I make clam chowder, linguini with clams, and a clam and mussel stew often.

Current fashion obsessions?

I’ll be wearing my sequined floral bomber over all my dresses or with shorts. I spend a lot of time on the water, so you’ll find me in my printed rash guards, which I started making for my kite-boarding friends.

What’s new with the brand? I’m excited about our proposed popup at the Museum of Democracy in Bridgehampton. I recently made oneof a-kind tyvek handpainted dresses that were auctioned off at a benefit.

Any travel plans?

I’m going to Tahiti Fashion Week in June, and in July, I am going to Wyntoon in Northern California.

There’s a new vin that’s worthy of your indulgence—meet Out East Rosé, the brainchild of Maggie Slavonic and Patrick Mitchell. Originating from an estate in Montfort-sur-Argens, the wine is a blend of Grenache and Cinsault, and it’s dry, crisp, and downright delicious. “We wanted to create a rosé that captured the essence of being in beautiful places, sharing experiences with people we love,” says Slavonic. “Out East Rosé brings together the idyllic settings of the Hamptons with the provenance and timeless quality of Provence, and we’re thrilled with the result!” Expect to see it on the menus at Surf Lodge and Highway Restaurant, and stock up on some for the house at Park Place Wines in East Hampton. Naturally, it’s the official rosé of The Daily Summer!

Moby’s is back! After a year-long hiatus, Lincoln Pilcher and team are bringing the kale and pasta you rely on back to East Hampton Point. (Make your res on Resy!) Stock up on fresh veg, eggs, charcuterie, fresh and marinated meats, and beach-ready fare, as well as Almond staples like that Caesar dressing and au poivre sauce. Best of all? PERFECTION IN SAG HARBOR!

CARTER WATCH BEGINS NOW!

When top realtors list their Hamptons homes, we pay close attention. Take the Sag Harbor abode of Douglas Elliman’s Noble Black and his husband, Marc Rozic, which is on the market for $3.395 million. With four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a library, and views of Otter Pond, it offers plenty of space for relaxing and entertaining. Recently designed and renovated by John Bjornen, the grounds were masterminded by Joseph Cornetta. There’s also a heated plunge pool, and separate dining and sitting areas. 330 Main St., Sag Harbor

The chances that we run into the Carter family on the beach are officially greater than zero. Last September, after years of renting, they purchased “The Pond House,” a real stunner on Georgica Pond (for just under $26 million, reportedly) that includes seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Plenty of room for Blue, Rumi, and Sir…and a few lucky guests.

What were you like as a child? I was a friendly child who had a normal childhood growing up in Florence, Italy. How did you end up in the fashion industry? It took a lot of determination. Against my parents’ wishes, I looked for a way to pay for fashion school by applying for a scholarship to a master’s program in Milan. Once I was accepted and moved there, my life changed. It was a dream! I discovered a whole new world. I would study for nearly 16 hours a day. I was very excited, so I never stopped learning. What drew you to accessories in particular? I never really planned it. It was actually Mr. [Patrizio] Bertelli at Prada who told me, after my first interview, that I would start in accessories instead of ready-to-wear. Bertelli is an intuitive person, and he saw my talent before I was aware of it. How did you end up at Stuart Weitzman? I met with Victor Luis [the CEO of Tapestry]. We had a conversation on a Saturday afternoon in Milan, and we really established a connection. It wasn’t planned at all, but I am here today because of Victor Luis. Tell us about your aesthetic signatures for the house. The first is hardware with a specific personality and point

“I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE DNA OF THE BRAND AND ITS POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE, BUT I’M VERY DETERMINED TO MOVE IT FORWARD.” of view. And then we are focusing on the colors—we have a sensibility for vibrant, deep, and bold shades. And we are also refining the lines, especially in the detail on the shoes. You are also launching handbags in a major way. What are the key concepts and shapes? The shoebox is a key silhouette. Obviously, Stuart Weitzman started as a shoe brand, so why not make a shoebox into a bag? And what was the concept for the jewelry? It is an extension of the hardware brand story, with a bold sensibility mirrored with key elements like the cylinder. You’ve really expanded the brand’s offerings—what inspired that decision? Our philosophy is to make Stuart Weitzman a multicategory footwear brand by broadening our offering of footwear essentials within categories like flats, pumps, sandals, loafers, and sneakers. What’s the vibe of the brand imagery? Sexy, in a modern way, and infused with energy. What are your hopes for your legacy here? To help build the house into a multi-accessory destination. How are you splitting your time? I fully respect the work and effort of the entire community of factories in Elda, Spain, to execute quality Stuart Weitzman products. They are my true partners, so I split my time 50/50 between Spain and New York. How are you enjoying life in New York? I live in Tribeca and feel at home there. There’s another side to my life—I’m passionate about the sport of CrossFit. I am a dedicated part of its community—they are like family to me. What were the best surprises about living and working in America? It has been a new start for me here in America—like drawing a line, and the past is the past. I am rebuilding and looking forward to the future. What’s the most American thing about you? I’m practical and fast. And your most Italian characteristic? My hair! ß

JANEY SAYS

EMP Summer House is back, and we have Janey Whiteside to thank. The globe-trotting EVP and general manager of American Express Platinum gives us the scoop on how our hardworking Platinum Cards have even more magic in store for Card Members—particularly in the Hamptons, of course. BY ASHLEY BAKER photographY by hannah turner-harts First things first: Thank you for bringing back EMP Summer House! Why was the partnership so successful last summer? It was something new in the Hamptons, and the combination of Will [Guidara] and Daniel [Humm’s] food and vision—and the indoor/outdoor space and garden—made it successful. Coming into it, it was a gamble. We hadn’t done something like that before, and neither had they, and we were all blown away by the response. Will and Daniel aren’t known for that more casual experience under the EMP brand, and we were super excited about what it was able to bring. I think they were excited to test their creativity in new and different ways, and integrate local artisanal producers to bring the flavor of the Hamptons to life. Clearly, there was an incredible response! [Laughs] EMP Summer House was our mostrequested restaurant through Platinum Concierge in the U.S. last summer, and Eleven Madison Park, now that it’s reopened, remains one of our most globally requested restaurants among Platinum Card Members. Will the format be the same this summer? Any changes we should expect? The main format will be the same—same space and garden—but there will be some menu variations. Daniel is working on bringing back some old favorites, and introducing some new ones, too. What can you tell us about your plans for EMP Winter House in Aspen? We’re still percolating, but you can expect all the things that make the Summer House fun—the more casual atmosphere and a locally driven menu, but with a winter theme in Aspen. This is the second year of the Platinum Collective initiative. Who have you added to the mix? We’ve added 15 new members, including Zanna Roberts Rassi [Marie Claire and Milk Makeup], Audrey Gelman [The Wing], Daniel Arsham [Snarkitecture], Jen Rubio [Away], Carol Lim [Opening Ceremony and Kenzo], and Tyler Haney [Outdoor Voices]. What are the characters—sorry, characteristics!—you’re looking for when you search for new members of the Platinum Collective? Well, they’re all characters. [Laughs]. People ask me about this a lot—there’s a difference in my mind between social media influencers, who are selected to distribute a message to their followers on social media, and people I’d like to come onto the Collective. People in the Collective are successful in their own right, either as individuals, or because they are building and working with brands that are successful with the next generation of consumer. They’re all influential, inspiring, inquisitive, and thoughtprovoking, and so the very nature of our work with them is twofold. We bring them in under the cover, so they can give us feedback, look at our ideas, and help push us. And then, we work with them to curate some really interesting collaborations to bring something extra to our Card Members. Has the EMP Summer House’s success inspired any new ideas for members of the Platinum Collective or Global Dining Collection? Yes to both. One of the things we’ve spent a lot of time working on with the Collective is helping them curate their expressions of themselves. For example, Daniel Arsham designed our Platinum House at Coachella this year, and Zanna Roberts Rassi brought her Milk Makeup bar. On the Global Dining side, we continue to add more chefs to the program and create unique experiences with them. Recently, we brought Massimo Bottura to Hong Kong, where he did a pop-up at the Peninsula. We’re working with our existing and new chefs on creating either unique experiences or reaching new audiences. The Platinum Card underwent a full-scale refresh in 2017. Which of your initiatives generated the most response from Card Members? It’s hard to separate them all out, but for example, we upped our reward points on travel, and we saw a significant uptick in both travel spend and allover spend just with that one change alone. Then we relaunched the card, so we introduced new benefits like Uber credits, and we feel that it’s really worked well. We introduced the metal card design, and about a third of our preexisting Card Members proactively contacted us to ask for the new card. We’re continuing to see great levels of engagement across the board. Each time we host an experiential activation, we see more people than we expected, and we’re getting great sell-through. We now have more Platinum Card Members than we’ve ever had, and half of our new Card Members are under the age of 35. Tell us about the Platinum Houses you brought to Coachella, Art Basel Miami Beach, and Aspen Food & Wine Classic. Our intention is to go to places where we know our Card Members are and help elevate the experience. At Coachella and Art Basel, there’s a lot of nighttime activity, but not so much happening during the day. The intention was to create a really nice retreat for

our Card Members during the day. At Coachella, that involved food and beverage, Zanna’s Milk Makeup bar, and a stage that was programmed by Republic Records. At Art Basel, we had a great space on the beach, health and wellness events during the day, hair and makeup services, and great food and wine. We were also able to host a really special private concert with Drake on the first night. It was so intimate that at one point, he was taking the phone out of the hand of one of the guests, singing and FaceTimeing. You have real insight into millennials and how they’re spending money. What do they value, and what are they spending money on? What’s unique about them as a group is that they value and spend money on experiences. Whether it’s places they’re going or experiences they’re having, we ask ourselves how we can elevate that through dining, entertainment, and travel. We’ve introduced a lot more lounges, for example. What can you share about the Centurion Lounge that’s opening at JFK next year? I am more excited about JFK than I’ve been about any of our other lounges, for a host of reasons. First, it is by far the biggest—it will be in excess of 15,000 square feet. If you know Terminal 4, the minute you go through security, it’s right there. It’s all glassfronted and consists of two levels, and there will be a whole range of food and beverage options and fitness offerings. If you’ve ever been to a Centurion Lounge, expect a Centurion Lounge on steroids. How much time do you spend on the road? A lot. My job is global, so I’m traveling some part of two weeks a month. How has all of that experience with Card Members, globally, impacted the work that you’re doing? A card in London or Singapore or New York needs to be locally relevant, but what we have the option to do is look globally. Most of our Card Members have the savvy and the smarts and means to be able to understand what’s going on when they’re at home. How do we help activate that same sort of experience for them when they’re traveling? Whether that’s travel experiences, By-Invitation-Only events, or our servicing experiences, we want them to have seamless interactions when they’re at home as well as away. What’s the craziest request you’ve ever made of an American Express concierge? I’m really boring. [Laughs] Today, I asked for dinner tonight for six people at Frenchette! You’re a Southampton regular. What’s your weekend strategy? I’m a beach girl. We get up, go to the beach early, stay there for a late lunch, come back into Southampton, get a sandwich at Sant Ambroeus or Citarella, and then go back home and chill. I’m very much on the down-low in the Hamptons. I like it quiet and chill. We promise not to accost you when we spot you having dinner at EMP! You know what I didn’t do last year? I never tried one of those cocktails that comes in a gnome! I feel like I missed out, so I’m going straight in for a Garden Gnome on opening weekend. Last question: How do you spend your points? I usually transfer them into Delta and use them for flights to Europe. This year, we’re going to Portugal with my parents and my brother! ß

Lucky Charms For the past 25 years, photographer and creative director Gilles Bensimon has prepared for his shoots by crafting beautiful talismans, which he relies on to bring good luck to each specific project. Now, his photographs of these gris-gris are being exhibited at Gobbi Fine Art in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. Over breakfast at Balthazar, Bensimon explains the project.

You’re one of the most celebrated photographers in the world. Why do you need any luck? Well, I’ve been a photographer for some years, you can say [Laughs], but you’re only as good as your last picture. I’m lucky enough to still be working, but I’m always nervous before any shoot. For a lot of photographers, especially the good ones who make a lot of money, shooting can become just a job. For me, the magical part of photography is the ability to create an image that reflects a moment in time. This is why I spend most of my time working for magazines. But when you’re shooting, many things can happen—the location is never what you expect, the weather can change.… I can’t help it. I’m so anxious! How long have you been making the gris-gris? About 25 years. At the beginning, [the concept] was less developed, and the materials were more organic—I’d pick up something like a piece of wood, a shell, or a rock. Now, I will use anything I find. Such as? A piece of plastic, glass…I’m always happy if I find a little piece of glass or mirror. When the first human beings started to make glass, it must have been a miracle for them! From sand and fire, they discovered transparency. What happens to the gris-gris after the shoot? Sometimes, the models or stylists or art directors take them. For me, the usage is done. After the shoot, they have no more power. For example, I was shooting with Kim Kardashian West [for Vogue

Australia]. Obviously, we didn’t want to have any paparazzi around, so we found a remote beach outside of Sydney, near to where the aborigines live. There were so many people who wanted to watch, and it was a great shoot. I left the gris-gris on a tree there, because I knew they would look at it. If I go back again one day, I will make another one. How many of these have you made recently? Well, I’ve already shot 12 cover stories since the beginning of the year. [Laughs] I go all over the world. I live in New York, but I’m just back from a week in Australia and five days in Israel.… I was shooting a cover for Maxim there. How do you prepare for a day on set? I try to be like an athlete—when I was young, I boxed—and so I’m very focused. Before the shoot, I go to the gym—I row for two hours. I want to exert myself and get bored. But then I don’t exercise when I’m on location, because I don’t do anything that reminds me of vacation. I don’t eat much, and I’m not really a drinker. I wake up early, I get ready, and I want things to start. I enjoy this a lot! As soon as I start shooting, I’m not anxious anymore. I love to work fast and make many pictures; I try to create great energy to make [the shoot] move. Do you wear any sort of a uniform? When I arrived in America, I bought some khaki T-shirts from Calvin Klein. I always wear one of them—even though they’re in bad shape now. [Laughs] I usually wear them with white pants. Sometimes, I scream at the hairdresser, because

“for me, the magical part of photography is the ability to create an image that reflects a moment in time.” I never like the hair—I wish I could do it myself, but I’m not a hairdresser!—but I really do love the people I collaborate with. It’s a great pleasure to do this kind of work. Do you have one gris-gris that you consider to be the luckiest? The next one, obviously. [Laughs] How did Sebastien Gobbi convince you to exhibit your photographs of the gris-gris? He saw a picture of them, and I said, “If you want a print, I will print you one.” But he said, “No, I want to do something more with them.” So I did some research and we asked 30 people to give us a quote about their own gris-gris for the catalog [for the exhibition]. What were some of your favorites? Carla [Bruni] said something very nice about me— very lyrical. Elle [Macpherson] talked about the number 11, and in the introduction, Diana [Picasso] wrote a long, scholarly piece about the gris-gris. Kim Kardashian contributed, too. She wrote me back 10 minutes after I sent her a note—she’s always like that! She wrote, “I’m sorry to answer so late. I am just back from Japan!” She’s great. What are your plans for the summer? I’m going to Biarritz. If I’m lucky, it’s raining. If I’m not lucky, it’s raining! [Laughs] I go to bed early, I read, I swim, and I never eat or drink that much. I’m 74! Someone asked me recently if I was afraid of death. I don’t give a damn. I’m only afraid that I won’t have the time to do what I want. Give me some work to do! ß FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. SUMMER’S MOST STYLISH! The best-dressed Hamptonites rely heavily on Kirna Zabête for a steady supply of ultra-curated chic. Which is why we asked its founder, Beth Buccini, to style out fellow East Ender Brooke Lampley, the new vice chairman of the fine-art division at Sotheby’s, in her favorite summer ’18 ensembles. BY ASHLEY BAKER photography by william jess laird

TALKING SHOP! WITH BETH BUCCINI Kirna Zabête has now been in East Hampton for three years. Why did it take you so long to get here? I don’t know, because I’ve always gone to the Hamptons, and always loved it! [Laughs] We opened as a pop-up in the summer of 2016, and it was so unbelievably successful—and so much fun—that I thought, I have to stay. We’ve been open year-round ever since. Business is fantastic! How do you curate the merch? Before we had the store, I would come into the city to work, and my friends would say, “Oh, my gosh, can you bring me out this and this?” People don’t have their full wardrobes in the Hamptons, like they have at their year-round houses. We think of the East Hampton boutique as a fill-in, instant-gratification, getorganized-for-fall fun store. If you want something from Kirna in the city? Piece of cake. We’re going back and forth all the time. We’ll overnight it to you! Which pieces are you jazzed about? No one can ever get enough of the printed summer dress. I am a huge fan of it, obviously, in my look today! We have a lot of Borgo de Nor, Saloni.… We think of a lot of vendors that you don’t get a lot of access to, as we’re the only designer store in East Hampton. And on the accessory front… Big, fun earrings. I love a statement earring! And some fun bracelets and lots of straw bags. We’ve got great things from Rebecca de Ravenel, Lizzie Fortunato, Staud, Danse Lente, and Mola Sasa. How long have you been coming out East? Since I was 22 years old and spent my first summer at what we called “grandmother’s cottage in the woods” with nine girlfriends. Now, luckily, I’m a grown-up with my own house, and my FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

four kids, and I move out there for the second half of the summer. I’m working at the store during the day. And when you’re off the clock… We go to Atlantic Beach, because it’s right by my house. My daughters and I are all big horseback riders, so we ride at a private barn on Town Lane in Amagansett. We love trying all the restaurants—we’re regulars at La Fondita and Wölffer Kitchen in Amagansett, and we’re excited to go back to EMP Summer House! Do you cook? I love to cook! I’m very Barefoot Contessa. I think I’ve cooked pretty much every recipe in her cookbooks. There’s also a really great butterflied lemon chicken that Nigella [Lawson] does that I love to do in the summer, with red onions and rosemary and lemons. There’s an easy peach tart I do from Amanda Hesser’s Cooking for Mr. Latte, which is a great book. Mostly, I cook very simply for my family— spaghetti and meatballs, roast chicken. How has your personal style evolved over the years? Someone said to me in my twenties that I was a chameleon, and I think in your twenties, you very much are. But after 25 years in this industry, I feel that I still have the same ethos that I’ve always had. I love color, I love print, I love happy clothes. Shopping is supposed to be fun! But it’s important to stay true to your style without getting dated. You always need to evolve. How many clothes are in your closet at a given time? A lot! [Laughs] My closet is big. I have a section that I lovingly refer to as “the archive.” When you’re spending big money on clothes, you should invest in pieces you’ll keep for life. ß

HITTING THE STREETS IN DOLCE & GABBANA Beth: “Holy cannoli! The shape is fantastic on Brooke. I love how cheeky and fun Dolce is, especially in summer. This is the ultimate printed dress!” Brooke: “Dolce & Gabbana may be my favorite designers, not that I’ve been asked to commit. I’d wear this to an auction—it will go with some of the contemporary works that are currently at Sotheby’s. This dress can definitely hold its own with the Basquiat we recently sold!”

Beth Buccini (left) and Brooke Lampley

BETH’S YAYS AND NAYS!

Are the following summer staples quintessentially Kirna Zabête…or not so much?

Birkenstocks: “Yes! Custom Kirna Birkenstocks, of course. We sold out of them, but I hoarded a few pairs.” Shorts: “Yes, but there’s a time and a place for a short—the beach, pretty much.”

Flip-flops: “Only at the beach.” Grandpa sneakers: “Sure—the Balenciaga Triple S!” Understated earrings: “We prefer statement, but sure.” miniMalism, in general? [Laughs] Yes, when it’s done in a Kirna way!

SITTING PRETTY IN BORGO DE NOR Beth: “I love the neckline. The beautiful ivory-beige background, and all those beautiful colors…what’s not to love?” Brooke: “I’m wearing this to summer cocktail parties…and maybe dinner at EMP Summer House. See you there!”

STYLE AND ART! WITH BROOKE LAMPLEY Tell us about the new gig! Previously, I was running the Impressionist and Modern Department [at Christie’s] for six years, where I was responsible for directing specialists on pricing and strategy for the department, and primarily responsible for our auction sales budget. Now I’m in a broader client-development capacity as vice chairman of the global fine-arts division, working with my clients on all of their interests across categories. Why are you art experts so gorgeously attired? Because people in art care about aesthetics, and fashion is not only an aesthetic endeavor, it’s a way to signal your interests and priorities. What’s your personal style? Unlike a lot of people in the art world, I am not architectural in my style—I really like things to be well-tailored. For formal events and suits, I really like Dolce & Gabbana, and I wear a

lot of Stella McCartney to work. I am driven to more special-looking pieces, so I haven’t gotten around to investing greatly in my basics, sadly. [Laughs] You’re a Kirna Zabête loyalist! I’ve been shopping there for as long as I can remember. I like the curated approach. I don’t have the time to shop in person often, so I really appreciate how Beth has preselected clothes that I’m likely to like by a lot of different designers. Being an art expert, I’m used to evaluating the quality of the material and the precise hue of a color. You don’t get that online. You summer in East Hampton— any plans we should know about? Actually, I haven’t done a lot of the art outings in the Hamptons recently. I could definitely go to the PollockKrasner House; I haven’t been to the Parrish recently, but I’m going to couple that with some rosé at Duryea’s in Montauk. ß FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. In her relatively short career, model Chiara Scelsi has already walked for Chanel, booked an H&M campaign, and been the face of Dolce & Gabbana Beauty (multiple times). Here, we get the scoop from the Supreme-repped designer darling. BY taylor harris

You just turned 21. Did you have a big birthday blowout? No, 21 isn’t as big of a thing in Milan, where I’m from. I just did a small dinner with friends. I didn’t go crazy. I like things simple and easy. You have a place in New York and a place in Milan. Do you prefer one over the other? I love Milan. It’s not as messy as New York, but New York has so many opportunities so it’s the perfect combination for me. I really love living in between. New York is the craziest place I’ve ever been. I love it, though—all my friends in New York are either musicians or artists. You meet people there who teach you something. I’m drawn to people who express themselves creatively and you really find them in New York. Were you discovered in Milan? Yeah, I was scouted there. An agent came up to me on the street and eventually, brought me in to my mother agency.

What did they say when they approached you? That I was super beautiful and I should try to do acting. Everybody said at first that I would never be able to really do modeling because I was too short. But when my mother agent met me, she thought I could do it, even though I wasn’t six feet tall. [Scelsi is 5-foot-7.5.] Had you ever thought about modeling before? No, not at all. I always wanted to be an athlete. I ran middle-distance and pole vaulted, but I had a bad injury on my knee. That’s why I never had confidence in my beauty because everybody treated me like a boy growing up. I’m still a little tomboyish. I don’t really like to wear too much jewelry or makeup or heels in my day-to-day life. I only wear that stuff when I’m modeling. Was it tough at first, getting used to wearing high heels all the time? No, it’s almost like a sports stance. You have to have a sense of balance inside; that’s what it’s all about with heels.

Do you play any sports now? Yes, I box about four or five times a week at Gotham Gym. Oh, my God, it is super tough! When I go home I eat pasta, gnocchi, pizza—my mom cooks classic Italian cuisine. So after a trip home, I know I need to get back into the boxing ring! What does your family think of your modeling? They believe in me so much, but at first they were like, “You’re modeling?” Everyone thought I was too boyish, but now I’m in a Dolce & Gabbana campaign, modeling for this super-feminine brand. What are Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce like in real life? They’re really good friends of mine. I love them because they were the first people who really believed in me. They’re so special to me. I was actually just texting Stefano. I sent him a picture of the Dolce look we shot earlier today. He sent back a bunch of heart emojis! ß

THE METGALA’S LEAST CONFIDENTIAL! When it comes to the Met Gala, everybody’s got an opinion. Which is why we tracked down a couple of non-VIP attendees to anonymously give us the skinny on what’s really going on in the Temple of Dendur. BY frederic b.f. pierre

p a tric k m c m u l l a n . c o m ( 3 ) ; shutterst o c k ( 3 )

THE CATER WAITER DISHES! What’s it like to work the Met Gala? It’s like any other catering gig. I held a heavy-ass tray of Aperol spritzes for 90 minutes before I got a break. My back is so f**ked up! And you’re in great shape! Right!? I was excited to work the event. They wanted model staffers, so I thought I’d be one of the guys in tuxedos, greeting guests on the steps of the Met. Nope! Did you enjoy the experience? I would have been so bored to be a guest. It’s not exciting—at all. You show up, do red carpet, you have cocktails in the Egyptian room for an hour, and then the A-listers show up right at the last minute. This year was Catholic-themed, and there was a church choir singing. And then they sat down for a dinner that went super fast because Anna [Wintour] is a stickler for efficiency. They were on our asses about timing. I get it. Whatever! Keep going! Madonna! Her performance took way too long to get going. All the celebrities were leaving. They put six of us waiters by the exit of The Met to direct people to a different exit. People were not having it. They were like, “F**k this! This dress is so crazy huge. Let me out now!” Madonna started her set with singing monks and it would have been cute if they sang for a minute, but she let them go on for like five minutes, which is why everyone peaced out. Rita Ora and a bunch of models were like, “Bye!” How were the celebs behaving? People were so obnoxious. Of course, it’s not the ones who are actually famous. It’s not the Hugh Jackmans. [Redacted teenage C-lister] pulled me aside from my duties and asked for bread. He wasn’t

at a premium table, so he hadn’t been served yet. Sorry! There was also this other model who I had to look up on the Internet. [Ed. note: One of the most famous models in the world.] When we were telling people they had to use the alternate exit she said, “You can’t hold people here against their will! That’s illegal. That’s kidnapping.” The way she was behaving was disgusting. She was complaining to us about how heavy her dress was. Did anybody force her to wear it? Maybe! What were the rules? Our cell phones were confiscated the second we walked onto the property. No texting, no photos. I’m surprised they didn’t make us sign an NDA! Thank heavens for that! Did they discourage you from talking to the celebrities? They wanted us to limit our interactions. They didn’t want to seem messy. Their whole thing was about focus, precision, and speed. When we were serving, the only thing we were allowed to say was, “May I?” There was no, “Heeey, want a spritz?” What time did you arrive? We showed up at 2 p.m. in dress pants, dress shoes, a belt, and a white undershirt. They give us a buttondown, a bow tie, and an apron. Then we started rehearsing. We had three days of rehearsal. Three days!? We had a French service rehearsal, because [redacted editrix] requested French service. We all had to go down to the caterer’s head office and practice French serving a table while we were timed. Originally, they wanted to do old-school spoon-and-fork French service, but they didn’t have enough servers. They finally decided to use tongs.

What was the other rehearsal for? The day before the event was rehearsal for choreography of service in the actual Met. On the day of the event, we did a full rehearsal before they put us into place at 6 p.m. with our trays of drinks. How much does this gig pay? I got $30 an hour, which is pretty low. I usually make $40–$50 an hour in this type of gig. Was there a lot of binge drinking? Some celebrities tried to take bottles from the bar and hid them around the museum so they could have their own stash. Did you see smoking? Everyone was smoking constantly throughout the party, but they were mostly into e-cigs this year. Some celebs were walking around blatantly smoking weed pens. Did you get a chance to have dinner? They always feed us. This year, it was big pans of lasagna and salad, and a vegetable lasagna for people who don’t eat meat. There was also a peanut-butterand-jelly station for those who didn’t feel like waiting in line for the lasagna. I couldn’t resist! This conversation gets better by the minute. Which celebs did you serve? Andrew Garfield grabbed a glass of water from me. It took everything in me to not tell him he was fabulous in Angels in America. Would you do it again? Probably not. The real celebrities, like Sarah Jessica Parker, were lovely. It was the people who are trying to make it in the Hollywood game who were the most obnoxious. I wouldn’t work it again, but obviously, if I’m invited as a guest, I’ll go. ß

THE ESCORT SPILLS! How did you end up as a VIP’s date to the Met Gala?! I manage a bar, and one day, when I was at work, a woman who came in from time to time asked if I was single and would be interested in going out with one of her clients. I’m always interested in dating, but I didn’t understand what she meant by “client.” She told me that she runs a business that secures dates for busy, wealthy men. One of them was looking for someone to take to the Met Gala. What did you think? I immediately went from being not very interested to saying, “Sign me up!” At first, she was really cagey, and didn’t tell me anything about the guy other than saying he was an “A-list celebrity.” I said that if she was referring to Tom Cruise, I wasn’t interested! What were the next steps? There was a lot of back-and-forth. She asked intimate questions about my sex life, because the client was curious. I was like, “Is this an escort service and she’s trying to play it off as a legit thing?” I finally told her that I wouldn’t do it until she told me the client’s name, so she finally dropped it. I know everyone in fashion and I had never heard of the guy. He was not a celebrity to me—he was a business type—so I was disappointed. But I agreed to meet him. Did you go out before the Met Gala? We went on two dinner dates. He was a lot older than me, which was already a bit of a deal-breaker. During dinner, he kept looking around at everyone in the room. At other guys? No! Women. He was talking about who made their handbags, coats, and dresses. He dropped a few doozies that turned me off. For example? “The wonderful thing about being as successful as I am is I have the power to destroy people.” That sounds like a line from The Bold and the Beautiful! He kind of reminded me of my dad. I think he was looking for some arm candy who didn’t know much about the world, but that’s not me. We talked about music, and I told him that I was into electronica and Madonna, and he threw his napkin over his head and said he didn’t think it was going to work out. He was into ’70s bands. I wasn’t really around then! Was there any chemistry? It was lovely that he was a billionaire. How did the official invite to the Met Gala come? I never had his phone number or e-mail—everything was channeled through assistants. One of them finally wrote to me and said he would officially like to have me as his guest.

How did the night begin? I picked him up at his place. The apartment was gorgeous, but it was very gay old lady—over-the-top and ostentatious. The [redacted celebrity] who he was bringing as part of his entourage opened the door because my date was apparently getting ready. [Redacted celebrity] and I ended up hanging around for 45 minutes. When I finally saw my date, he hadn’t showered and looked really frumpy. I’m not a stickler for fragrances, but nobody likes BO. He finally got ready and we all got into our SUV, which reeked of weed. We finally got there, and that’s when the fun started!

“[The kiss] was awkward, uncomfortable, and cold.” Were you nervous? The red carpet was really exciting. In retrospect, I wish I had taken thousands of selfies, but I was trying to keep it classy. The bob-in-charge [aka the hosting editrix] was testy with my date because he hadn’t been returning her calls. That was awkward! Was he touchy with you? Not at all. I was wallpaper from the minute we arrived. I was polite and gracious. He seemed to be a little irritated that I knew a lot of people there. Did anybody ask how you two met? They did. I said we met through friends. At dinner, I was seated right next to [redacted major fashion editor]. I’m not that crazy about fashion, but I know really cool people when I see them, and I hit the jackpot. She turned out to be delightful. She had just lost a cat and was a little down, so I made it a point to have fun with her. She was like, “What are you doing with this guy?” On the other side of me was the

[redacted celebrity] who kept chewing gum all night, and my date was seated next to her. How much interaction did you have with him during the dinner? I was super polite. The staff all knew me from the hospitality industry, too. Because I made the mistake of wearing a black tie, people thought I was working the event. Everyone was like, “What are you doing here?” At the end of the dinner, he announced, “Are you off to the bathroom again? Are you doing drugs?” No! I just like to go to the bathroom regularly! I was so embarrassed for him. Were you excited to see the celebs? I was. I told J. Lo she looked gorgeous and she said, “I know, baby.” Then [redacted fashion editor] said to me that if there was anyone I wanted to meet, now is your chance. Gwen Stefani was at the table behind us, so [the editor] stood up and introduced me to her. Did you feel like an escort? The whole experience made me feel really cheap. I knew what I’d gotten myself into, but I was doing my best to be a gracious guest, and he was very dismissive. Ironically, he told me he was having a good time because he normally leaves the Gala after the dinner. He wanted to go home at 11:30, and I planned to be out until 3 a.m.! When he was giving me these weird vibes, I considered ditching him and staying at the party. Where did you go after you left? Some crappy 24-hour diner. Who wants to do that when you can be at the Met Gala? But I guess he goes there all the time. We had a late-night meal, and the conversation was really uncomfortable. I knew I definitely didn’t want to see him again after he told the driver to drop him off first, which was really rude. Perhaps he thought you were going home with him. I never thought of that! Maybe he wanted to get his $30,000 worth. Is that what your ticket cost? Yes! Did he go in for a kiss? Yes, and it was awkward, uncomfortable, and cold. Did you kiss him back? Tentatively. My tongue remained in my mouth. I wasn’t feeling it. Did you hear from him again? I didn’t. I sent him a thank-you card to be gracious. From what I understand, he found exactly what he was looking for. Would you do it again? Sure! If I go again, I’m going to be a maniac. I’ll take Molly and kiss Florence Welch! ß

Lais Ribeiro Workout routine: I don’t really have a routine—I like to mix it up and try different types of exercise. Right now, I’m in love with Pilates. Skincare secret: I take care of my skin from the inside out, so I make sure to hydrate and eat healthy foods all year long. For my beauty routine, I make sure to cleanse, moisturize, and always use sunblock. On the food front: My diet is pretty standard all year long, but right before the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, I eat lots of protein and veggies and increase my workouts. Especially proud of: My long legs.

Lais Ribeiro

What workout would you still like to try? A Barre class! Best fitness advice: Loud music always gets you excited and ready.

Sara Sampaio Workout routine: Resistance training and weight training are my favorites. I like when my trainers get creative and find new exercises that challenge me. Skincare secrets: I wash my face with water and put on a Shiseido softener and then a Shiseido moisturizer, and I’m good to go! On the food front: I just eat a balanced diet. I try to eat a bit of everything, and not deprive myself of anything! If I feel like eating pizza, I will, but maybe the next meal I’ll have some fish with veggies. Especially proud of: My butt! I work really hard on it.

What workout would you still like to try? Hot Pilates. It’s like hot yoga on a Pilates machine. It looks interesting. Best fitness advice: If an exercise doesn’t feel right, don’t force it, because you might hurt yourself. And rest! It’s as important to rest as it is to exercise.

Leomie Anderson

Workout routine: I love a combination of Pilates and body weight exercises.

Workout routine: Pilates and dance work best for my body, and I see results instantly. I follow Melissa Wood Tepperberg’s workouts on her website, and also, Megan Roup.

Workout routine: Recently, I’ve been doing personal-training sessions with my instructor, Faye, who uses resistance bands. I enjoy this because it’s about small movements with high resistance and it works out the more overlooked muscles in the body.

Skincare secrets: I sleep at least eight to 10 hours a night, so I actually believe in “beauty sleep.” I never sleep with my makeup on, and I wash my face morning and night. I wear lots of moisturizer with SPF, and I exfoliate twice a week. On the food front: I have a fast metabolism, so I have to eat every couple of hours. I have big breakfasts with eggs or a smoothie and then lunch with lots of protein. I also love my carbs, they’re the only thing that keeps me super full. But I balance those out with lots of exercise and fish and veggies.

Devon Windsor

Especially proud of: My butt! Motivation strategy: I grew up in sports, so being athletic and active has always been a part of my life. If I don’t work out for a while, I start to feel gross—mentally and physically. What workout would you still like to try? I really want to try aerial yoga. It looks so challenging, but fun at the same time! Best fitness advice: Find what works for your body.

Workout routine: Currently, I’m doing mostly body weight with high reps—15–20 reps, three times a week for 40 minutes maximum. Skincare secrets: I use Korres skinand body care products. On the food front: I follow the island diet—fish, chicken, eggs, vegetables, fruits, rice, and potatoes. Preferably organic!

Especially proud of: All of it! Motivation strategy: I’m working to stay at the top of the male modeling business. It has worked for 19 years! What fitness routine would you still like to try? Extreme mud race.

Best fitness advice: Starting working with fitness genius Nate Miyaki. He’s the best.

Shanina Shaik

Leomie Anderson

Skincare secrets: I use a variety of Kiehl’s products in my daily routine, but my favorites have to be the Ultra Facial Moisturizer and the Daily Facial Oil. I bring the oil with me on long flights to keep my skin hydrated.

On the food front: I’m pescatarian, but I eat vegan as often as I can. My breakfast is usually a tempeh scramble or vegetable omelette. For lunch, I enjoy steamed fish with vegetables, and for dinner, I find I eat less. I eat a veggie bowl stir-fry, gluten-free pasta or more yummy steamed fish with veggies. I don’t drink any soda or fruit juices—just water, tea, and coffee.

Motivation strategy: To be honest, I don’t really force myself. Listening to your body is really important. What do you dread? Anything armrelated. I’m so weak!

Especially proud of: My legs! I’m amazed how easily my legs retain muscle and keep their toned definition.

Best fitness advice: It came from my instructor, Faye. She says that no one is weak, although they might not be practiced in a certain area. Anyone can become strong!

Motivation strategy: My job keeps me motivated to stay fit. I never know when I will get a call and have to jump on a plane to do a swimwear shoot. This just happened recently!

Eian Scully

What workout would you like to try? Boxing! I wish I could box like I used to, but I can’t unfortunately because of an injury.

Workout routine: It varies, but I always include a mix of weight lifting, cardio, and yoga. I lift weights three times a week to build and shape my muscles. I focus on compound lifts, such as squats, deadlift, and bench presses; these big lifts give you the most bang for your buck. I finish with smaller lifts, such a biceps, triceps, and abs. These smaller lifts are more for “detailing” and should not comprise the bulk of your workouts. I do cardio three times per week and increase duration and frequency when prepping for a photo shoot. I alternate between interval-style sprints and steady state cardio, where I stay at the same pace for 30–45 minutes. Both types of cardio have major benefits for not only fat loss but also for your heart and lung health!

What do you dread? If I’m tired and exhausted but know I have to hit a workout, I dread walking into the gym or a class. But I have to push through! When I’m done, I feel proud and strong.

Brad Kroenig

What do you dread? Cardio. I stopped two years ago and got the leanest in my life!

Skincare secrets: I wash my face with cold water, use a toner, and press the product into my skin, followed with my La Mer eye cream and a SPF moisturizer. At night, I cleanse my face with Sturm facial cleanser and use a deep hydrating moisturizer.

Brad Kroenig

Best fitness advice: Work out for your body type, and don’t overdo it. Consistency is key!

Jasmine Tookes Workout routine: I like to switch it up. One day, I’ll do yoga, and then the following day, I’ll do weight training. And then, onto Pilates! It’s good to keep the muscles challenged with new exercises.

Skincare secrets: I don’t use any skincare products except coconut oil as a moisturizer. I believe good skin comes from the inside. Eating and exercising properly will create great skin!

Skincare secrets: I use allnatural products on my skin. I use coconut oil to take off my makeup, and I moisturize with a vitamin E capsule. On the food front: I eat a lot of protein, especially on days I work out. A typical lunch is usually grilled chicken with veggies and rice. For dinner, I love a good steak and potatoes. Jasmine Tookes

What do you dread? A post-workout stretch! My muscles are always aching from the day before, so the stretching can be a little painful, but I just keep reminding myself it’s good for me. Especially proud of: My butt. I worked really hard to make it nice and plump, and it took a lot of dedication and heavy lifting. Totally worth it!

On the food front: I believe in a balanced, whole food–based diet. I don’t count calories but instead focus on getting balanced meals with lots of complete protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and good fats. What do you dread? Going on a lower calorie/carb diet before a big photo shoot. It robs you of your energy and is just generally miserable! Best fitness advice: Consistency is key.

That said, I definitely have moments of zero motivation after a long day of shooting. When that happens, I think about casting for the Victoria’s Secret show and how disappointed I would be if I wasn’t ready when the opportunity came. A good Rihanna or Dua Lipa playlist provides further inspiration to work out hard!

Motivation strategy: I feel my best and I’m most confident when I am in great physical shape. That’s my motivation! What workout would you still like to try? I really want to get more into yoga and be able to do arm/head balances and inversions. What do you dread? Running! I have to trick myself into loving it. I always feel amazing after doing it. It’s rewarding.

Jason Morgan Workout routine: If I only have an hour in the day, I will either go with a run or a yoga session. It all depends on how my body feels. Skincare secrets: I moisturize and try to use one with an SPF. I also think staying hydrated is really important. On the food front: I try to cut out sugar and processed foods as much as possible. Lean protein and veggies are probably what I tend to eat the most. I eat less red meat than I used to. Especially proud of: My hair. I’m happy it’s still with me.

Motivation strategy: I don’t really have a choice to stay motivated or not. This is my job. I’m lucky that I enjoy exercising and eating right. There are definitely times when I’m traveling or jet-lagged that I really have to Hannah Ferguson force myself to get moving, but it always feels great when I finish.

Best fitness advice: Be consistent with nutrition and exercise so as to not fluctuate all the time. It’s okay to indulge occasionally, but maybe spend more time working out to counterbalance it.

What fitness routine would you still like to try? A dancing class. I need all the help I can get in that area. Best fitness advice: [Trainer] Jim Ferris said, “The purpose of training is to train with purpose.” ß

DIETDish Functional medicine nutritionist Dana James is an essential resource to some of the tautest bodies around. (Margot Robbie, for starters!) Naturally, we demanded answers to our most pressing conundrum du moment—how can we whip ourselves into prime summer shape?

HAUTEST BODIES EVER!

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

We had the longest NYC winter on record or something. We ate too many fries, and it was a mistake. How can we redeem ourselves? If you’re trying to lose weight, come off all dairy and gluten as a starting point. Those foods are often inflammatory within the body, and inflammation inhibits the breakdown of body fat. Unless you’re certain that you’re not sensitive to dairy or gluten, you should come off them for four weeks. So, what are we eating? Let’s start with breakfast… Protein, because it stimulates the breakdown of body fat. I recommend basic smoothies—a cup of nut milk, a cup of frozen fruit, and two tablespoons of plantbased protein powder. No other additions, unless they’re noncaloric superfoods! But only make them at home, because if you buy them, they’re going to be loaded with too much fat, which will inhibit the weight loss. No chia, flax, almond butter, hemp seed, or anything like that, because you don’t need to add to the caloric content. What are these noncaloric superfoods you speak of? Ashwagandha, which works on the stress response; Rhodiola, which helps with mental acuity; and a greens or a reds powder is fine. What’s your vision for lunch and dinner? They should look the same. For ease, think of six ingredients. Start with half a plate of vegetables; three different types of them is great. Then one quarter of the plate should be protein, and the remainder is split between carbs and fat. It’s true that you can’t spot-train fat, but you can eat in the way that removes fat in those challenging areas by changing the hormones. This is where my archetypes come into play! [See sidebar, opposite] How does exercise factor in to weight loss? Depends on how fast you want to lose. If you’ve got four weeks to lose the weight, then exercise five days a week for 45 minutes to an hour. You use the diet to strip down body fat, and you use the exercise to sculpt muscles. When you’re eating in a way that gets the body fat down, you don’t need to do really intense training classes or run for an hour and a half. You can take a Pilates or dance class that makes the muscles pop, so the body overall looks more beautiful and toned. How does your summer diet differ from what you eat during the winter? I eat with the seasons. In winter, I typically eat two cooked meals; in summer, I tend to eat more raw foods. In the transitional seasons of fall and spring, one is cooked, and the other is raw. In summer, when I’m shopping from farmer’s markets, I love to have grilled fish and salads with lots of fresh herbs. When it’s cold, my diet includes more broths and soups. For breakfast in June, who doesn’t want to have an amazing berry smoothie? But in the middle of December, do you still want that? Hell, no—I want eggs! [Laughs]

DANA’S SUMMER MENU Breakfast: A basic smoothie

Lunch: Grilled fish with a tomato salad, maybe some microgreens

Afternoon snack: Watermelon Dinner: A grass-fed steak on the BBQ and an array of veggies

What should we be drinking? Lots of filtered water! Counter your alcohol with exercise. If you’re downing two glasses of rosé every day, cut the carbs and get yourself to the gym. On the alcohol front, what can we drink? I’m a huge fan of tequila. Thank God! [Laughs] Tequila and mezcal are your best choice, because of the impurities in wine. Your second choice is an organic or biodynamic wine.

One glass, right? Maybe two? Not more than that! [Laughs] The Hamptons lifestyle can be both punishing and indulgent. Barry’s Bootcamp in the morning, Bostwick’s for lunch… Most of my clients come see me in April to get leaner, and then they go out to the Hamptons. At best, they maintain their weight, and at worst, they gain 10 pounds. Outside of the Hamptons, that doesn’t exist—the Hamptons promote a certain type of eating and drinking. By the end of the summer, most people who go to the Hamptons have gained weight, and that’s very specific to the area’s demographic. Why does this happen? New Yorkers relish summer to such an extent that we almost go on a bingefest! I split my time between New York and L.A., and it’s more balanced there. People want to look good all year round, because nine months out of the year there, it’s easy to be in a bikini. When you’re in the Hamptons, where do you eat? I love The Crow’s Nest! You’re really into fresh herbs. Why? They increase liver detoxification, so they’re going to help with that alcohol you’re drinking! [Laughs] Are we going to live in such austerity forever? One of the biggest fallacies out there is that in order to maintain weight loss, you need to continue eating in a certain way. Well, that’s crap! Purely from a mathematical perspective, when you’re planning on losing weight, you need to eat a smaller amount of food. Once you get to your goal, you can increase the amount of food you’re eating in order to maintain your weight. Sometimes, someone can go from a 1,100-calorie diet when they’re losing weight up to a 1,600-calorie diet. That’s a massive difference! You can go ahead and have that pasta and not gain any weight. The most important thing is that you change your perception of how you use food. If you’re a reward or comfort eater, and you continue to do that, you’ll gain the weight back. The behaviors need to be consistently altered for you to see success in the long-term. ß

DANA SOUNDS OFF ON… SUGAR! “Obviously, we don’t want people chowing down on candy bars and eating ice cream every night, but there’s nothing more pleasurable than eating ice cream on a sunny Sunday afternoon. To rob somebody of that joy is to put a dent into their life. Think of sugary treats as something you might have one a week. The issue with sugar is when you’re using it as a form of connection. It can be a proxy for fun and excitement. If you find yourself constantly craving sugar, ask yourself, ‘What bores me? What kinds of connection am I looking for?’ ”

FRIED FOODS! “You can have them once a week, but it can’t be a foundational way of eating.”

CAFFEINE!

WHICH ARCHETYPE ARE YOU? The Wonder Woman

“She sources her self-worth from success and achievement, and tends to store body fat on her abdominal area, as her dominant hormone is cortisol. She is usually a reward eater, and that’s what takes her off track. It’s crucial that she come off the gluten and the dairy, because those exacerbate the cortisol response, making it harder for her to lose weight from the abdominal area. She can tolerate a quarter cup of carbs at lunch and dinner.”

The Nurturer

“She sources her self-worth from caring for others. She tends to store body fat all over, but particularly on the upper thighs and upper arms. Her dominant hormones are insulin and estrogen. She is usually a comfort eater. She’s sensitive to carbohydrates, so I don’t put any carbohydrates in her plan, with the exception of vegetables and fruit, and I have her eat a predominantly pescatarian diet. Plus, no nuts—they’re too chemically and energetically dead for her.”

The Ethereal

“Naturally lean, she has long, thin muscles, and she sources her sense of self-worth from her intuitive self. She either forgets to eat, or she starts to use carbohydrates to numb her sensitivity. The Ethereal exists much less in New York—there are more of them in L.A. She has a really great tolerance for carbohydrates; she actually needs them to feel grounded. She’s the only body type who should be eating those noodle and grain bowls, and having that piece of gluten-free toast for breakfast; everyone else should be cutting that out when they’re planning on losing weight.”

The Femme Fatale

“She focuses her self-worth on physical appearance and status. We’re going to be dealing with quite a bit of that in the Hamptons! [Laughs] The body type here is less unique, because it depends on her eating behaviors. She could look like any of the other archetypes, depending on whether or not she’s restricting her food, or overeating out of shame. She has the most dysfunctional relationship with food, because when your sense of self is based on your physical appearance, you tend to control that.”

“I love coffee! If it doesn’t give you the jitters, a cup a day is fine—just make sure it’s organic. Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in terms of pesticides. In the Hamptons, try Jack’s Stir Brew!”

bULLETPROOF COFFEE! “Is a breakfast consisting of fat and caffeine better for you than a green juice? No! Unless your mitochondria is so damaged that you need that amount of fat in the morning, this isn’t the choice for you.”

BEER! “If you want to have a lean body, there’s no place in your diet for beer.”

UNLIMITED POTENTIAL Twenty-five years ago, FREDERICO AZEVEDO arrived in the Hamptons and launched the landscape design business that took the area’s storied gardens into entirely new directions. As Unlimited Earth Care celebrates this milestone, Azevedo reflects on his colorful journey. BY ASHLEY BAKER Take us back to 1993… I had just arrived in the Hamptons. I was working for another company, and then I got two major accounts and decided to open my own business. One of the projects was designing and executing the garden for a home that was located on six acres in front of Mecox Bay in Water Mill. Did you have a name for the company? At the time, I didn’t. The daughter of my client was a marketing person, and together, we came up with Unlimited Earth Care. What about the logo? I got the logo idea from a Picasso drawing. I like to define my work as art in landscaping. How was your aesthetic different from what else was going on? At that time, people were very into hedges. Everything was static—evergreen, foundation gardens, and then other gardens far away from all that structure.… I started to bring all flowers everywhere. Why have color in only one part of the landscape? Mix them up! I made flowers the

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

foundation of the garden, mixing them with the shrubs, flowering trees, and hedges. All the plant materials were used to create a more seasonal approach by mixing heights and textures. This created the expectation of something new with each season. How quickly did the business grow? Very quickly. I opened in 1993, and by 1995, I was on the cover of an international magazine. I really connected with the Hamptons clientele. My ideas were welcomed here. After two years in business, my work was part of an exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in Soho, which was one of the most powerful galleries in the ’90s. When did you open your Garden Concept Store and headquarters? In 2006. I bought what used to be a service station at the corner of Scuttle Hole Road and Bridgehampton–Sag Harbor Turnpike. It was the ideal place, because it was far from [Montauk] Highway, but it was also a place that many people usually passed by. I got the building in 2004, and

it took almost two years to get all the permits, and I opened it in 2006. The Garden Concept Store emphasizes new designers who use recycled materials—pottery, sculptures, and garden accessories. What’s the scale of your operation now? I have a family of employees, and it grows bigger every year. Some of them have worked for me for more than 20 years. We are proud of the work that we do, and we all feel responsible for it. How many projects are you working on? Several. I don’t want to count them, because I might get scared! [Laughs] They’re the responsibility of the whole team, as we work on several projects at the same time. Any examples? We’re doing all kinds of different things—a terrace, a backyard, and a rooftop on Elizabeth Street in Manhattan; a garden for a newly renovated house here in the Hamptons; houses for different new construction projects; and we’re also adding gardens to the homes of existing clients.

“THERE’S NO PLACE IN THE WHOLE WORLD LIKE THE HAMPTONS.… THE CLIENTELE HERE PUSH YOU TO BECOME A BETTER PROFESSIONAL.” Why was the Hamptons the right place for you to build your career? There’s no place in the whole world like the Hamptons. I brag about living here! We have the most beautiful beaches with extensive white sand, a mixture of farm fields and wood forests, dunes… we have everything! As a professional, being in the Hamptons provides the opportunity to meet with people who appreciate new ideas. They are open to things that will challenge them to understand. That keeps you moving, makes you always search for what is coming—not for what is now happening, but what will come next. The clientele here push you to become a better professional. You live in North Haven, correct? Yes, and I love it. North Haven used to be an island, so we have water everywhere. Most of the houses have a good amount of land, and the light in North Haven is beautiful, because the area is surrounded by water. Where do you hope to see your business in the next five years? I put all my efforts into trying to build the strongest relationships with everyone who works with me, and everyone we work for. We’re The Daily, so we have to talk fashion. You’re a very stylish guy—what are you wearing these days? I always wear more Dior than anything else. Now, Kris [Van Assche] has gone to Berluti! When the news came out that he left Dior and went to Berluti, all my friends were texting me. [Laughs] I love Berluti shoes—I’ve been wearing them for years. Do you shop in the Hamptons? I shop everywhere—I also love to shop for my son and daughter, too. Here, I love Blue & Cream and Tenet. In the city, it’s Barneys and the designer boutiques. When you need a vacation from the Hamptons, where do you go? I love Miami. It’s one of my favorite spots. And London, too. What are your plans for the summer? We have our 25th-anniversary event on June 16 here at the Garden Concept Store. It’s going to be together with Salty, a brand that does outdoor furniture fishes made of recycled sailing fabric. They also use surfboards as design elements for furniture. Where can we find you on your time off? During the season from March to September, I work 15 hours a day. But I’ll skip to New York to see different exhibitions! ß FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

modern MASTERPIECE What’s the backstory with this property? The current owners of the house bought this property in order to build their dream house. They loved the way it’s completely surrounded by a nature preserve. Can you tell us a little bit about the architect? Kevin O’Sullivan is a locally based architect who specializes in classic modernism, integrating classical proportions with contemporary design styles. What’s unique about the way the house is situated? The house is built into the gentle slope of the property. The pool has a two-story drop-off, rendering the effect of floating amid the ancient silver beech trees, which give the 189-acre reserve its name. What’s the vibe of the neighborhood? It consists of many two-acre wooded lots on gently rolling hills, which gives the homes in this neighborhood peaceful seclusion. The homes are a mix of modern and traditional styles. What kind of materials are used in this house? Kevin uses a variety of materials in different ways.

Travertine appears indoors as floor material, then again in a different variety for the courtyard patio floor. Teak is used for ceilings and deck floors. And glass! There are lots of beautiful floor-to-ceiling glass walls, which open fully to allow the outdoors in. What’s the appeal of Amagansett North? People like Amagansett North because it affords great proximity to the beautiful ocean and bay beaches, plus the adorable village of Amagansett, but its larger lots provide more privacy and room for more sizable houses than other areas of Amagansett. What’s the story with the pool? The pool is simply amazing. It has an infinity edge on two sides, which spills over onto a 20-foot waterfall with a beautiful tile mosaic underneath. It also has a sun shelf for chaises and built-in umbrella holes for shaded lounging. Tell us about the home gym. The gym has a wall of glass that looks out toward the forest and a door that opens to a small patio for outdoor exercise. It has a steam room and sauna, too. There is also a yoga studio; yogi not included! ß

ALL ABOUT JENNIFER AND KIERAN! LOCAL FACTOR “We moved here permanently 15 years ago, after having spent summers here since early childhood.”

CAREER 411 “We started in the restaurant business in Manhattan, also managing apartments and retail spaces in mixed-use buildings. When we moved to Amagansett, it seemed only natural for us to focus on real estate.”

DOMICILE “We live in the Amagansett Lanes.”

MARKET MUSINGS “Investing in real estate should be looked at like many other investments: with an eye toward the long term. The difference is that most people use their investment for their own enjoyment, so the buyer or seller’s needs come into play much more.”

NABE of the MOMENT “Amagansett North is a great opportunity; there are great properties that sell for considerably less than their South-of-Highway counterparts only a mile or so away. And it offers more space and privacy with great proximity to the beaches and to town.”

EXTRACURRICULARS “We love the beaches and fabulous outdoor activities the East End has to offer, and since we live here full-time and have children, we enjoy participating in the community.” Jennifer is closely involved in the local schools and The Retreat, an organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence. Kieran coaches Little League and volunteers as a local firefighter.
