SWIM TALK! With REBECCA TAYLOR

What’s your pool routine? We have a pool at our summer house, so I’m currently figuring it out! I do swim a lot, though. I always put my hair in a ponytail and wear sunscreen. And Dior Show waterproof mascara, of course! Any plans for the Fourth? I’ll be on Shelter Island watching the fireworks with my kids. We’re going to have a bonfire on the beach, too!

Launch Party

The Daily Summer celebrated its season premiere issue with a poolside bash at the Hôtel Americano’s La Piscine. The crowd included the issue’s cover star, Toni Garrn, looking luminous in a white Zimmermann ensemble, and legendary photog Gilles Bensimon, who shot Garrn in St. Barth. The crowd included a slew of designers and other fashion insiders, plus a gaggle of male mods. “It’s a huge honor,” Garrn told The Daily. “I invited a bunch of my friends. I love that I looked so happy on the cover. I really do smile a lot in real life.” Cointreau Rickeys ( fresh lime juice, club soda, and seasonal tastes like strawberry basil), Peroni beer, and a wide selection of vino options from Wines by Rioja were served. VIPs left with loaded gift bags filled with Evian, Moroccanoil sun care, a set of Cointreau Rickey essentials, passes to SoulCycle and Pure Yoga, gift cards to Intermix, Vensette, and Shan, plus goodies from Boots Cosmetics and John Frieda. Until next time!

How’s your summer going? It’s going really well. I love it! But I’m German and still not used to it being super hot. What have people’s reaction been to the magazine? Really good! My friends who are in the Hamptons were like, “Oh, my God, you’re everywhere!” What’s your swimming routine? I like to swim. I can do the breaststroke, but I’m really bad at the dog paddle. I just can’t do it.

It doesn’t take much for the fashion cognoscenti to don their finery, but this June’s CFDA Awards made even the best-dressed up their game a bit. At Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the industry’s heavy hitters abounded to toast winners like Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, who took home the Womenswear Designer of the Year award, and Tom Ford, who earned the menswear honor.

MAJOR MOMENTS! With Betsey Johnson

How did it feel to be honored with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achivement Award? The best. The best. There’s really no topping this. What are your summer plans? Well, my Hamptons house is for sale, so I won’t be there. My family is moving to Malibu, so I’ll be splitting my time. Anything on your summer reading list? I’m thinking of writing a book—a fun paperback about my life. But I did get through the first two and a quarter of the third Fifty Shades of Grey!

TONY AWARDS Larry David

Thanks to a red-carpet intervention from Anna Wintour, the 2015 Tony Awards joined the ranks of Hollywood’s most illustrious awards shows. In addition to the usual stars of Broadway, the event included top designers and models. Billy Reid dressed winner Alex Sharp, while Costa squired Kendall Jenner and Wu brought Ashley Greene. Wintour sat second row and afterward, guests hit the official after-party at the Plaza. The after-afterparties included the Carlyle bash and Alan Cumming’s soiree at the Hotel Edition, which brought out Bradley Cooper, Darren Criss, and the Tony host’s mom, Mary Darling, who was visiting from Scotland. Naturally, she was the most sought-out guest of the evening.

HOSTING DUTIES! with Alan Cumming

You’ve compared hosting the Tony Awards to childbirth. Discuss! As soon as it’s over you feel exhilarated and great, but there were parts of it that were terrifying and painful. What was the most terrifying moment in the show? Right before I walked onstage. Once I was on, I was fine. What can you do? There’s a looming knowledge that this thing is going to happen whether you are ready or not. There was so little rehearsal. People say to me now, “You didn’t look nervous!” and I say, “I know! I was faking it. I’m an actor!” Why did you choose designer Lucio Castro to make you two outfits for the event? I love his style. I suggested he make me shorts rather than trousers. I knew I was wearing different designers throughout the show, but whomever I wore on the red carpet would get the first and most attention, and I wanted to do that for him. I really think he’s great. The shorts caused some controversy! Why do you think they bother people? People are bothered by anything that scares them. I think I looked lovely. It’s summer, and I like wearing shorts with a formal look! Deal with it, people. Who were some of the other designers that you wore? Calvin Klein Collection, Marc Jacobs, Stephen F, Kenneth Cole…and three

looks from David Hart. Do you have a favorite ensemble? I really loved the shorts. I felt so comfortable. It’s also nice to be wearing shorts when you’re dancing about. It’s very practical! Anna Wintour helped glam up the red carpet. Do theater people need her help? Some do! Theater people are just like other people. Some have style, and some need a hand. How did you celebrate after the show? I went to the Plaza party briefly and then went to my after-party at the Hotel Edition sponsored by Campari America. I deejayed—I made it Club Cumming night. I wore a kilt that I changed into in the car. What was the highlight of the night? The party. I was so looking forward to it. I didn’t want it to be an industry thing or one of the many stop-offs. I wanted it to have the feel of Guy Oseary and Madonna’s Oscar party, with people chilling out after an intense evening. I didn’t want it to be a place where anybody felt self-conscious, and I think I succeeded. Did you google yourself after the show? Absolutely! Many times. My ethos is if you believe the good reviews, you have to believe the bad ones. How did you think people received the show? We didn’t f**k up too badly! It’s all relative. It wasn’t boring. It’s not perfect, but you don’t get to control the whole thing. It seemed like people had a good time. Of course I saw some snarky things about my clothes from stick-in-the-mud establishment types, but I also saw a lot of positive things where people thought I looked really fun. Would you consider hosting the Oscars this year? [Laughs] Absolutely not! What’s next for you? I’m about to start shooting the next season of The Good Wife. I’m also doing a lot of concerts coming up all over the place of Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs. —Interview by Eddie Roche

My ethos is if you believe the good reviews, you have to believe the bad ones.”

COFFEE newbie ALERT! Is Montauk ready for its first espresso bar? Behold Left Hand Coffee, courtesy of Yannis Papagianni and Montauk Beach House coowner Larry Siedlick. Warning: We have tasted this brew, and it is entirely addictive. So, Yannis, what initially sparked your interest in coffee? My interest in coffee started with my very first cup, which was a Greek coffee. I got really interested in the science part of it when I worked with a world-champion barista in the city. What makes your blends so unique? We use different kinds of blends and roasts—one light and one dark for drip, and a three-bean blend for espresso. We’ve been approached by a lot of Montauk venues interested in selling our coffee. 83 S. Elmwood Ave., Montauk

What’s new? We’re launching swim for Resort! We’re also looking at opening our first store in 2016. What brings you to Shelter Island on July 11 and 12? For the past two years, we’ve celebrated Bastille Day with a pop-up in Soho. This year, we wanted to do something in the Hamptons; Sunset Beach seemed perfect. Why do you dig Sunset Beach? We love all of André Balazs’ properties. They have an aesthetic that’s super chic but a little bit naughty, which is very in line with Fleur du Mal. We shot our Fall campaign at the Standard High Line and have had events at Chateau Marmont.

Which Cabana item is on heavy rotation for you? I live in my highwaisted jean shorts from Courtshop. What else should we buy? The key to being a good guest in the Hamptons is great hostess gifts! We carry Well Received textured leather stationery, first-edition Surf to Skate coffee table books, and Hôtel Costes’ purple candle, which scents the popular restaurant L’Avenue. How’d you pick the location? My husband and I spend our summers in Southampton and absolutely love the town, so it was never a question! 53 Jobs Ln., Southampton

CHIC SHINDIG ALERT!

Serena & Lily Beach Market in Wainscott threw a shopping soiree in May, and co-founder Serena Dugan was in town from Northern Cali for the occasion. What made you want to set up shop out East initially? When I came to the Hamptons for the first time, I felt it was the physical interpretation of our product. We have a very distinct look and product line. We’re in the right spot to say something beachy, breezy, fun, and exciting for the lifestyle we envisioned! Why did you decide to expand into apparel? I felt like there was something missing in the market. I wanted to reinterpret all the silhouettes I’ve worn over the years in a modern, wearable way. 332 Montauk Hwy., Wainscott

NICOLE MILLER’S GUIDE TO EATING ALFRESCO Our resident foodie’s Hamptons crib sheet for any BBQ, picnic, or boating adventure.

Foo d Fix

SCENE Burger 411: I get ground chuck from Schiavoni’s. I like medium rare, but my husband likes welldone, so I put his on first and mine last. Toppings talk: Cheese, always! Either blue cheese or Swiss, plus pickles. I love sourdough buns, but you can’t find them everywhere. Best burger out East: LT Burger in Sag Harbor. I usually have the Standard. The Mexican is sometimes nice for a change. Condiment chatter: I go for Dijon mustard; I like ketchup and mustard mixed, too. Haute dogs: Ball Park Franks are best. They’re my son’s favorite, too. I do ketchup, mustard, and sometimes relish. BBQ musts: I’ll put a whole chicken in my smoker. I make more unusual things than burgers and dogs on the grill when I’m entertaining. Thoughts on…coleslaw? I hate coleslaw! Instead, I make celery rémoulade with celery root. Potato salad M.O.: I love homemade potato salad with lots of herbs. I use red potatoes with the skins on. I use oil and vinegar, unless I make my own mayo. Deviled eggs: discuss. Not my thing! Picnicking essentials: Lobsters from the Dock Bar, with chilled chardonnay, chips and salsa from Serene Green, and fresh mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes from Red Horse Market, eaten at the beach in Sagaponack. Sailing snacks: Soppressata on baguettes from Cavaniola’s, with North Fork chips.

☛ Tons of Nick & Toni’s sightings! Leonardo DiCaprio feasted on zucchini chips, chicken, and red wine with a large group in the back room. ☛ Emily Mortimer and a pal dined there on soft-shell crab. ☛ Plus! J. Lo was at the resto recently for her sister Lynda’s birthday. ☛ Jimmy Fallon satisfied a hot dog craving at Townline BBQ recently. ☛ Carole Radziwill and Eric Stonestreet (separately) hit up the bar at Almond. ☛ Sean Avery was spotted at the Golden Pear in Southampton. ☛ Susan Lucci was seen at Sant Ambroeus. ☛ Gwyneth Paltrow and Tracy Anderson’s new gluten-free takeout food line, 3 Green Hearts, lets you eat super Goop-y! The grub is solely available at Anderson’s Hamptons studios. ☛ Postmates delivery service has hit the Hamptons. Get your favorite takeout, toiletries, and more delivered. ☛ Java intel! Hampton Coffee debuted cold brew this summer. ☛ Acai bowl, anyone? Lisa’s Lovely Organics opened in East Hampton at 27 Race Ln. ☛ Southampton Village is getting its first Starbucks. Yay or nay? ☛

PASTA PARTY!

With Scarpetta Beach’s executive chef, Jon Oh Will you serve Scarpetta’s famous spaghetti with tomato and basil? Yes! A third of our guests order it in NYC. I bet it’ll be similar in Montauk. Its reputation carries a lot of weight! Any East End exclusives? Half the menu will only be available at Scarpetta Beach. We’re excited about the fluke crudo with sunchoke puree, oranges, and a citrus vinaigrette. Gurney’s, 290 Old Montauk Hwy., Montauk

CHOWING DOWN!

With Philippe’s executive chef, Philippe Chow A few menu highlights, please! Definitely the Peking duck and chicken satay. I’m thrilled about our new summer items, like steamed salmon and sushi. What’s your celeb clientele like in NYC? A number of athletes are regulars. I’m a huge basketball fan! Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony are two pals of mine. 44 Three Mile Harbor Rd., East Hampton

DOCK DREAMIN’ With Harbor’s owner, James “Jamo” Willis What’s your backstory? I was very involved in the hospitality and wine industries in Australia and London. When I came to NYC I was involved with Ruby’s Cafe, Kingswood, and Brinkley’s; I opened the nightclub Southside in 2008. How did Harbor come about? I looked at spaces for a few years, and knew I had to have this one. It’s on the docks surrounded by water. You can play Ping-Pong, boccie, and hang in the sun, eat oysters and drink champagne at sunset, or have a dinner that turns into a great dance party with old-school jams. What’s a standout dish? The spaghettini with crab, mint, chili, and toasted bread crumbs. It’s a very hard dish to make and perfect. 313 Three Mile Harbor Hog Creek Rd., Willis and Harbor East Hampton partner Robert Hirsh FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

FRESH TALENT!

With Nick & Toni’s new chef de cuisine, Bryan Futerman

What were you doing before Nick & Toni’s? I owned my own restaurant, Foody’s in Watermill, for nine years. We served really delicious pizza and BBQ from a cherrywood-burning grill. What’s your favorite dish on the menu? Wild striped bass, our newest menu addition. It’s wood-roasted and served with a fresh pistou of Amber Waves wheatberries cooked with saffron, snap peas, and heirloom tomatoes. What have you added to the mix at Nick & Toni’s? I’ve made close connections with local farmers. Their amazing local produce goes on the menu the day it arrives. 136 N. Main St., East Hampton m i l l e r : g i o r g i o n i r o ; B F A N Y C . ENDORPHIN HIGH With AKT InMotion’s Anna Kaiser

s t i F ne Physique 57

Why did you open a flagship location in the Hamptons? We’ve been using rented spaces for the past four summers, gauging the best area for our flagship. After two years of searching, we found the perfect location! What sets AKT apart from other boutique fitness studios? The AKT workout changes every two weeks so that you never get bored and you never plateau. We’ll combine pilates with kickboxing, or heavy weights with hip-hop, or power yoga with sports conditioning. The workout is always high energy, with low, sexy lighting, and a crazy fun sweat. Any fun summer plans? I go to Barcelona every week or two to train Shakira. I also have a vacation planned, hurrah! My husband and I are going to London and Switzerland for a week to visit family. 3 Railroad Ave., East Hampton

Time for the latest sweatinducing scoop! ☛ Well Within set up shop in East Hampton in the fall at 135 Springs Fireplace Rd., with classes inspired by surfing and the slogan “You do not have to be flexible or fabulous to work it out here.” ☛ Trying to get your Zumba fix out East? Dance Fitness with Kinga brings the hip-shaking workout to the Hampton Bays library on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. for just five bucks. ☛ KamaDeva Yoga in East Hampton is now offering stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga classes at 15 Lumber Ln. ☛

CHILLING OUT With Pure Yoga’s Kay Kay Clivio

Why did you bring Pure Yoga to the End? So many of our dedicated students from Manhattan head out to the Hamptons in the summer! Montauk is such a peaceful environment. Sole East’s practice space is nestled into nature among the trees and beautiful body of water. Any stress-relieving yoga poses we should do? Sun Salutations are great to practice at home. You get a little cardio, too! What’s your ideal activity post-class? Nothing’s better than jumping in the ocean. It brings yoga’s cleansing effect to the next level! Sole East, 90 2nd House Rd., Montauk; Saturdays at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

TOTAL KNOCKOUT

With PUNCH Fitness Center’s Adelino Da Costa What’s your history out East? We’ve been in the Hamptons every summer since opening in 2006, often in different locations. This year, we’re offering group classes at our Hamptons location in addition to one-on-one and semi-private training sessions. Mods love boxing these days. Why? Boxing results in a long, FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

lean body. Models can’t afford to get bulky; jumping rope and cardio helps burn lots of calories while also developing stamina. It also enhances self-discipline and confidence, which is extremely important in competitive industries like modeling. 89 Clay Pit Rd., Sag Harbor

TONING UP

With Physique 57’s Tanya Becker Any new Hamptons action? We’re offering pop-up poolside classes on Saturdays at Montauk Beach House in July. Any new classes out East? Check out Physique Namastique on July 5. It blends the best of Physique 57 arm, thigh, seat, and ab exercises intertwined with power yoga postures. Which body part is still tough for you to work out? Our thigh work is always challenging! Your thighs are one of the largest muscle groups, so having them strong and toned really stokes your metabolic rate. 264 Butter Ln., Bridgehampton; Montauk Beach House pop-up, 55 S. Elmwood Ave., Montauk

BOOTCAMP SCOOP With Ramy Brook’s Ramy Sharp

What brought you and Barry’s together? I’m a huge fan of Barry’s Bootcamp and following every class I always change into my favorite pieces from my athleisure collection, Après, so when the opportunity came to work with them on a post-workout collection, I just had to do it! It’s a 10-piece collection that includes popular dresses, pants, shorts, and top styles from the Après line with a special Barry’s Bootcamp touch. What do you love about Barry’s Bootcamp? I love the energy and pace! I also like how they mix it up, so you never get bored. That’s the secret to getting hooked; trying new things and feeling yourself getting stronger. Available at Barry’s Bootcamp in Amagansett, 199 Main St., and Wainscott, 352 Montauk Hwy.

TORQ TALK With Flywheel’s Ruth Zukerman

What’s new? We opened a Flywheel pop-up studio in Southampton in June! What does your ideal day in the Hamptons consist of? My day always starts with a Flywheel class, followed by an iced coffee at the new Harbor Market in Sag Harbor. Then, I relax with family and friends on the beach or enjoy time at home. I’m happiest when I’m in my historic village house in Sag Harbor, sunning on the deck or planning and cooking a fabulous dinner for friends. Which songs are you obsessed with playing in class? I found a remix of “Alive” by Pearl Jam that I can’t get enough of! Also, anything off the new Mumford & Sons album. It’s spectacular. 33 Hill St., Southampton; 65 Montauk Hwy., Ste. I’m really looking forward to my thirties, because I think they’re going to be even better than my twenties.”

What were you summers like growing up? I grew up in the desert in California, so it was hot—like 110 degrees. We would go to a lot of water parks to cool off, and my mom also brought us to the library all the time. We took road trips to the beach or Minnesota, where we have family. Our favorite beach was Laguna—it’s much cooler there. Summers were so fun. How do you deal with the weather on the East Coast? We have such brutal winters that I can take 100 percent humidity, and I’ll be happy. In the winter, I feel like I can’t put on enough to keep warm. I’m a summer girl. Do you travel in August? Yes! I usually have a bit of time off then, so we plan a trip. Last summer, my husband, Sean, and I went on our honeymoon in Hawaii and had the best time ever. This year, we’re going back to South Carolina in July to celebrate our first anniversary. Do you have a favorite rosé? Whispering Angel. I think it’s everybody’s favorite! But I like anything that’s really light and dry. What are your favorite places in the Hamptons? I love Serafina. Actually, I love all the restaurants in East Hampton! I rented a place there two summers ago, and I invited all my friends. We barbecued a lot. My dog had the best time ever, because she was running around all over the backyard. And the beach is so accessible! What are your plans for July 4th? We’re going to Nantucket, which we love. My friend got married there last October, and we fell in love with the island. What does your husband do for a living? He works with medical devices and spinal surgeons. He’s in the operating room with them every day doing scoliosis surgery. It’s really interesting. He’s so specialized in what he does, but he doesn’t scrub in. He just has a laser pointer and tells the doctor what size instrument to use. In college, he was a Division 1 football player. He dreamed about going pro, but it didn’t work out. Where did you and Sean meet? We were at a party and we started talking a little bit and immediately I was like, “You’re probably an a**hole.” He was too good to be true! My No. 1 thing about dating in the past was that I wanted to find a guy with a big heart. Nothing else matters! What have you learned about marriage in the past year? Date nights are really important, because you can get so stuck in your routine of working, working, working. Right now, my husband and I are so focused on our careers that we don’t want to take each other for granted. We’ll go to a movie or a restaurant just to spend some quality time together. We’re a team, and I feel settled in that area of my life. It’s so nice to have a partner that I’m going to be with for the rest of my life!

After 10 years of traveling abroad as a model, I’ve worked with the industry’s most talented makeup artists, and sitting in the chair for countless hours was like makeup school.” Last year, you left the Victoria’s Secret family. It was bittersweet, because I was moving on to bigger and better things and really spreading my wings. I appreciate what they have done for my career, so I wanted to go out with a bang and make it a really positive experience. What did reporters ask you backstage before your final show? They always ask, “What’s your diet?” They’re so concerned about what we’re eating. I’m just one of those girls who has a fast metabolism—I’m naturally skinny. I would not be able to walk on the runway if I haven’t eaten. I try to keep my diet hearty, healthy, and energizing. I don’t believe in diets. Last year, you turned 30. How did it feel? I was dreading it, but now, I’m really looking forward to my thirties because I think they’re going to be even better than my twenties. I’m married and I’m starting a new venture with Wander Beauty. I’m also really looking forward to having kids. I don’t want to put a time line on it, but maybe in the next four years. Fill us in on Wander Beauty. It’s a line of internationally inspired, multitasking makeup essentials. After 10 years of traveling abroad as a model, I’ve worked with the industry’s most talented makeup artists, and sitting in the chair for countless hours was like makeup school. I know all the tricks of the trade: how to apply makeup, how to hide flaws, and how to accentuate your best features. I learned so much about formulas—what works and what doesn’t. What’s your first product in the line? The On-the-Glow Brush and Illuminator, which works for all women, no matter what age. You can use one stick to create a multitude of looks. Apply a little mascara, and you’re done! It has been doing really well—beauty editors have been raving about it. We’re selling on QVC—we’ve been on there about a month—and it’s already a best-rated top seller. Why is it called Wander Beauty? I’ve been wandering around the world for the past 10 years. I’m cofounder and creative director of the company—I’m not just the spokesmodel. I’m actually there, doing product development. Every single day I’m taking e-mails, on the phone, and in meetings with my co-founder, Divya Gugnani. Who are your female entrepreneurial role models? I always look up to other models who have taken entrepreneurial routes like Cindy Crawford, Kathy Ireland, and Heidi Klum. I would love to have lunch with them and have them tell me everything. Somebody needs to write a book about transitioning from model to entrepreneur. Maybe you should write it. That’s an idea!

Making Waves Whether touring the globe with his band or hanging at home in Hawaii en famille, Donavon Frankenreiter always makes sure to catch a wave. Another must: summer in the Hamptons, where he’s become one of the most in-demand performers at the Surf Lodge and Stephen Talkhouse. BY SYDNEY SADICK

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

How long have you been coming out East? I’ve been playing here every summer for the past six or seven years. The first time I was introduced to the Hamptons was when Bruce Weber invited me to come out and do a photo shoot with him. We went to Andy Warhol’s house, and I was so tripped out about how crazy it was to be there and then shooting with Bruce. Bruce was like, “What are you and your wife doing tonight? I have tickets to Stephen Talkhouse, this tiny little hip club where Bon Jovi’s playing acoustic.” I was like, “What? Where are we?” Three or four years later, I came back to the Hamptons and started playing there a lot. Who’s in your band? There are three of us—Mike Duffy on drums and percussion, Matt Grundy on bass, guitars, and background vocals, and I play acoustic and electric guitar and sing. Our new album, The Heart, is coming out on August 4. Once we put out a record, we usually tour for about two years off that album all over the world. So once it’s out, the wheels will start spinning again! How did you get into surfing? As a child in San Clemente, California, I went to the beach a lot. Before I got a surfboard, I was trying to stand up on anything I had—a

What’s your go-to spot for surfing? My favorite place to go is in Hawaii with my family. I’m on the road for seven or eight months of the year, so when I’m home, I feel like I’m on vacation. What do you wear when you perform? Mostly pieces from Billabong. I love the collection, and sometimes I wear pieces that never came out in stores, or they’ll make me something custom. Sometimes I’ll pair their stuff with vintage, or my wife will bleach a shirt or cut a shirt in half. I keep it pretty casual, though. No dressing up in weird outfits. We understand that you’re venturing into retail? Yes! I launched an e-commerce site, thebarn808.com, last year. We sell things that reference our bohemian lifestyle, from fashion to housewares to everything in between. Some of the brands we carry are Surf Bazaar, Valley Eyewear, Mother Denim, Nick Fouquet, and one-of-a-kind pieces from around the world. In 2016, we’re opening a brick-and-mortar store in Hanalei, Kauai. What’s essential in every surfer’s closet? A pair of trunks and a wet suit. For the hardcore surfer, that’s all you need! What kind of board do you have?

Before I got a surfboard, I was trying to stand up on anything I had—a boogie board, skateboards, rafts, whatever.”

boogie board, skateboards, rafts, whatever. When I caught my first wave, I just fell in love with it, and I haven’t stopped since. When I was 12 years old, I was sponsored by Billabong as an amateur surfer. I turned pro when I was 16, and I’ve stayed with them ever since. I’m still sponsored and surfing and making a living riding. I’m 42 now, so it’s been a long and amazing relationship. When did you launch your collection of Billabong trunks? I did that about five years ago. It ran for three years. It featured a couple of pairs of trunks, a T-shirt and a button-down, and a pair of jeans. I haven’t done one in a couple of years, but I know there’s been some talk about getting that going again. I hope it happens! It’s exciting to be in there with those guys and conceptually come up with ideas and then have it come out.

I work with Hobie—they make all my surfboards, and I have my own collection of boards with them, too. I have single fins, twin fins, four fins….all my collections are available through Hobie.com and all over their surf shops. Besides music and surfing, any other passions? I’m really into painting, and I love being a dad and a husband. I have five things in my life that I’m obsessed with, and those are all I do! Any plans for July 4th? Well, I’ll be working! I’m flying to either North or South Carolina to perform. How do you unwind? I like gardening; it’s a form of meditation for me. We have a garden at home with four huge beds of vegetables and fruit. It’s fun for the kids. I’ll say, “Grab some onions, cilantro, and kale.” It’s fun for them to eat what they’ve planted.

FAMILY First

For accessories designer Monica Botkier, weekends at her family’s three-pronged home in Bridgehampton are an opportunity to live the good life. BY PAIGE REDDINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFANIA CURTO

How long have you been coming to the Hamptons? Since I was 11. My best friend’s family had a home on Shelter Island’s Shell Beach, and I spent the entire summers after 7th and 8th grades there. Shortly after that, my parents rented a house, and then bought one. We were always very artsy, spending time outside, listening to moody music, and watching moody skies. What’s the story behind your home in Bridgehampton? It’s the same house my parents bought when I was 15, and now it’s been expanded and redesigned to accommodate my family and my sister’s family. It’s like a three-winged house that we all share. It’s cool because that’s what summers are about—the family all getting together. Are you surprised by how much Bridgehampton has changed over the years? Yeah. In my early twenties, I threw some serious ragers, and my parents were pretty cool with it. At the time, there were potato and corn fields everywhere—there weren’t really any homes near us. Every year, more and more are built. It’s different now, but the sun, air, and sky still have a beautiful, calming feeling. How much time do you spend here? We come out every weekend starting in June, and we take two weeks in August. I send my kids to camp here. They get bored after two weeks, so we switch them up. Any other rituals? We do pool time right after breakfast—they just strip off their pajamas and jump in. We generally go to the beach after lunch. My sister and her husband have a boat in Sag Harbor, so we do water sports like tubing. When the kids go to camp, I try to do something physical, like a FlyWheel or yoga class. I also try to catch up on books and see friends in Amagansett and Montauk. What’s on your summer reading list? I’m in the middle of about 12 books. I want to finish How to Hug a Porcupine, an instructional book on raising teens—my oldest child is 10 and a half. I also want to read the novel by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza, The Knockoff, but first, I need to finish Diana Vreeland’s biography. Any favorite summer recipes? We grill a lot, so I do BBQ chicken with a lot of healthy oils, cumin, and honey. My sister does a really great softshell crab and corn and avocado salad. We try to bake FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

pies, too, but we often drift over to Harry’s Farm, because theirs are insane. Do you have any favorite beaches? I would say Mecox Beach right by us in Bridgehampton, especially with the beach and the bay, because they connect so it creates a little lake for the kids. Atlantic Beach in Amagansett is a great beach. Montauk’s fun too, but I’m not a surfer. It’s fun to go out there and watch people surf every once in a while. Do you have Hamptons-centric pet peeves? People take themselves very seriously, and it’s not as chill as it used to be. I don’t really go out to eat very often because I really like to cook with the family, but it’s also insane with the traffic, lines, and reservations. I just want to go with the flow, but those things are impossible with the density of the people. When I was way underage, I used to go to Bay Street and see all these great reggae bands, but those kinds of things aren’t around anymore. What’s your go-to summer bag? Our Soho tote, which has been a huge hit. It’s very lightweight and raw, so it shows off the beauty of the leather. I throw everything in it— it’s great for shopping. For the city, our Warren backpack is really great. You can also rearrange it so it works as a shoulder bag. Your company has gone through some major changes in the past year. Yes! I created and owned Botkier independently for 10 years. Two years ago, Botkier was acquired by Showroom35, which has provided so much support and given Botkier so many opportunities. We operate as a brand with a strong heritage, and we are going through a rebirth. It’s been a very exciting time for us, and we can’t wait for what’s to come! When you launched in 2003, your Trigger bag was a runaway hit. We like to say it launched an industry, because we feel like it was a cornerstone for contemporary handbags. It was really a phenomenon—all these women were finding me, from the Condé Nast building to the middle of Ohio. It had a five-year run, and then we put it away for a few years. We just brought it back, and the timing couldn’t be better. We reimagined it a little bit, introducing it in five different silhouettes—think Hobo style, cross-body, zip-around, and others. How often do people mispronounce your last name? All the time! They want to give it a French inflection, but it’s really Russian!

HERE COMES THE BRIDE!

Since revamping a Montauk Highway landmark in 2008, c/o The Maidstone owner Jenny Ljungberg has injected East Hampton with Scandinavian charm. Now, the bride-to-be is sharing her unique take on weddings in the East End. BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFANIA CURTO

What’s the plan for your special day? We’re having it on the property! We’re putting up a big tent in the backyard and the parking lot and creating a lot of room for the ceremony. We want to show off how we can do really interesting, cool weddings at the Maidstone. Is this a new thing? So far, we’ve hosted weddings for about 80 people in our garden, but for our wedding in

We want to show off how we can do really interesting, cool weddings. mid-July, we’re expecting about 120 guests. Since there are only 19 guest rooms here, we coordinate with other hotels to book rooms for guests. What activities have you planned? We’re going to start at Wölffer on Thursday, for either dinner or a wine tasting. There will be a magician for the kids and horseback riding. On Friday, we’re having a clambake on the beach, and then on Saturday, we’re having the reception in the garden. The after-party will be held in the Living Room. You’ve loaned out your personal art collection to the hotel to display this summer. What prompted that idea? Every year, we come up with an exhibition for our walls; we’ve had some up-and-coming artists as well as established ones. I have some excess pieces at my home from Sweden, so I decided to bring them here. It allows people to see a little bit of my soul, since the whole c/o brand is about my ideals. Are any pieces for sale? Some of them! I try to have a Buddhist way of thinking—

I don’t need to own everything. If someone loves it more than I do, then maybe it’s time to part with it. I met my fiancé, Jonathan [Baker], later in life, and when you partner with somebody, you want to buy stuff together. Why did you create a store within the hotel? There are so many cool things from Scandinavia—the hope and dream was that instead of buying flowers to bring to a dinner party, you can stop by here and find something unique for the host. This year, we’re selling a special line of jewelry made from old Swedish china. We’ve also opened Austere, a Scandinavian design shop, which features everything from furniture and clothing to toys. How did you find your new general manager? We’ve worked together twice before at my hotels in Sweden. I was looking for someone new and fresh who truly knows and cares for my brand. Jakob [Berlin] is a chef by training, but he’s also good at making sure guests have a memorable experience. He cares about every single room. What is this we hear about “beach butlers…”? There aren’t many great food options on the beach, and yet who wants to leave to get lunch? Now, our guests can order from the restaurant and we’ll drive it to them at a certain time. And the Living Room has a new chef? Yes, Michael Massetti. He worked here last year, so we knew him. He shares our taste in local, organic food. And he’s incredibly good at desserts!

IS IT OVER YET?

Summer isn’t all roses and rosé—at least according to Jill Kargman, author, creator, and star of Bravo’s Odd Mom Out. BY ASHLEY BAKER

Kargman (center) with the cast of Odd Mom Out

Is summer really as great as it seems on Instagram? People filter and tweak and crop, and you can’t see their sweat or smell their BO. There’s a pernicious side to trying to project perfection and dreaminess all the time. I love wine with a sunset, but it’s all starting to look so postcardy and cheese. Do you look forward to the season? Why or why not? F**k no. I hate summer. I live for fall and coats and leaves and tights and boots. How does your life change during the summer months? I squint and wither on the vine and schvitz my balls off and wait for fall. What’s it like to have the kids out of school? To quote the Baroness Elsa von Schraeder in The Sound of Music but adapted for Jewy Jewsteins, “There’s a delightful little thing called sleepaway camp!” And how does your routine change? I sleep more, work out more, drink less, regress to early-twenties laziness… Do any of the summer social rituals drive you insane? Just the rat conga lines and giant postapocalyptic roaches. What’s your idea of a perfect vacation? No 212s anywhere near me, or a staycation with no waits anywhere. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

How do your vacations play out? This summer, it’s a road trip with the kids or an Italian exploration with Harry [Kargman, Jill’s husband]. What’s your summer wardrobe? Little light dresses and big-ass hats. Odd Mom Out What’s your beach routine? I loathe the beach. I know, I’m a unicorn. But I hate it. If I have to go with the kids, I wear long sleeves and glasses and a hat and look like the angel of death. How do you feel about your beach body? Fine, but it’s shrouded in fabric to protect from lobster skin after even minutes of exposure. Sunblock is a hoax, and the only SPF that works for me is a building. When are you on your best behavior? When I’m in front of my kids. And finally, how do you feel on Labor Day weekend? Euphoric. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY

BEACH-BOUND PRIMATES! Admit it—you’re just as obsessed with Primates of Park Avenue as the rest of us—and author du moment Wednesday Martin has some anthropological observations about the East End, too. BY SYDNEY SADICK

Blade is massively used. It’s almost like helicopters are the new Jitneys!”

When did you first venture out to the East End? When I was in my twenties. I shared houses with different people, but my first experience was living with a fashion designer. It was so much fun seeing how she dressed. One of the first things I learned about the Hamptons was that you don’t wear heels, only wedges. When I was in a share house, there was a lot of going out—we went to Conscience Point all the time. Now that I’m older, it’s more about events. One of my favorites is Author’s Night; I’ll be there this summer with my book. I also love anything supporting the Children’s Museum of the East End. Where’s your Hamptons home? In Sag Harbor. It’s a great place to write and people-watch. It’s a different tribe here—there are a lot of writers and artists. How do your Park Avenue “primates” make the journey out East? Blade is massively used. It’s almost like helicopters are the new Jitneys! Do women feel pressure to look a certain way in the Hamptons? Yes. New York City is a body display culture, and the Hamptons is a body display culture with beaches! The bar is very high, which is why you see the exercise insanity. Where? Physique 57 and SoulCycle, but there are places to see and be seen in every Hamptons town. Beacon, Sant Ambroeus, and Nick & Toni’s are big places to show off how good you look. Where would fashion be without our desire to display? I think of peacocks. Which shops do your Park Avenue “primates” visit? Scoop, Blue & Cream, Intermix, Brunello Cucinelli, and Roberta Freymann. We’re all shopping in the same places, so there’s often a fun acknowledgement when we’re wearing the same thing as someone else. Does the East End have an ultimate status symbol, like the Upper East Side and its Birkin? One of the coveted items is a beautiful pedicure in Essie South of the Highway or Mademoiselle. Another cult obsession is vbeauté sunblock. And of course, the white dress. Everyone out here probably has at least five of them. And a Marni sandal, to be a little more avant-garde. One of the most popular brands is Azzedine Alaïa. You’d think, “Oh, my God, this tight, heavy dress!” but once, I saw a mom wearing one with her daughter at a lemonade stand. It was cute—she was wearing it with flip-flops. Why is fashion so important to these tribes? I knew that I wanted to study the Upper East Side culture because of the uniforms. I had been living downtown, and everything at that time was Sally Hershberger haircuts and Marc Jacobs and Pucci clothes. I had it all—I was a total fashionholic and I still am—but the mommies all around me were not doing the whole casualhipster mommy look. They were doing totally elegant, high-end designer fashion. My wardrobe didn’t cut it, and I realized if I wanted to mingle with these women and fit in, I’d have to change up my wardrobe, while of course still being true to myself. It was a pleasure to do it!

BATHING SUIT beauty

Fashion impresario Shoshanna Gruss makes some of the best bikinis on the market—all of which she test-drives on the beaches near her home base in Sag Harbor. Now a brand ambassador for Elizabeth Arden and a collaborator with Club Monaco, Gruss’ singular sensibility is finding an audience far beyond the East End and her native New York City. BY ASHLEY BAKER Photography By STEFANIA CURTO

How long have you been coming to the Hamptons? My entire life! When I was a little girl, my parents had a house in Westhampton. As an adult, I got my first house in Water Mill, and then we moved to East Hampton before ending up at our current place in Sag Harbor. What are your favorite childhood memories? A bunch of my friends from the city came here, too, and we were water babies— we boogie boarded, surfed, and played in the ocean all day. It was pretty awesome. We went everywhere within biking distance! What’s so special about the East End? I’ve been fortunate to travel the world with my family, and the beaches here are some of the most beautiful ones the world has to offer. The ocean is really manageable, and the bays are amazing, too—every water sport is available. I know there are complaints about the traffic, but when you think about how close and convenient it really is, compared to a tropical vacation… I’m pretty much a homebody when I’m out here. I tend to really enjoy the topography of the land and water and be active in that way. I stay away from the town life, unless I’m going to dinner or the movies. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

What are some of your rituals now that you have a family? My two-year-old twins just started swimming this week on their own, which is incredible. My older girl is 10, and I love taking her to the beaches, catching crabs, and going paddleboarding. We play a lot of tennis, and I just started surfing lessons. I try to have a couple of hours to just hang out at the house, reading and laughing. We do a lot of arts and crafts, too. Yesterday, we made friendship bracelets. I’m so grown up in some ways, but I still really enjoy some of the things that I did as a child. I credit that to my parents for giving me such an awesome upbringing. I want to re-create a lot of those memories for my kids. Okay, back to work—how long have you been in business? November 1998 was my first resort collection, so 18 years. How many swimsuits have you made in that time? Thousands! I saved just one of each, and I have boxes and boxes. This season, we have 70 styles in the rotation. It’s a lot! How has swimwear technology changed since you’ve been in business? When I first started out, there was a very low option of sizing—everything was sold as a set, and there were no separates. I used to have all my suits custom-made, because nothing fit me! I was very curvaceous when I was really young, and there were no options at all. When I started the line, it was very important for me to offer a wide range of sizes and to sell all the suits as separates. Because you would never buy your lingerie as a set, right? So the line was a big hit, and now almost every swim line sells their tops and bottoms as separates. But we’ve never stopped making sure the fit is right, and we continue to celebrate women and think about all our different body types while trying to make beautiful, wearable swimsuits and clothes. How long have you been collaborating with Club Monaco? This is our second season. It’s so nice to have that platform to work with, and I admire them so much. It’s flattering that they asked me to make suits rather than doing them themselves! I really stick to universally popular fits and styles. I want to make sure I’m reaching as many people as I can. Working with people who know what they’re doing is a lot of fun. What kind of work are you doing as a brand ambassador for Elizabeth Arden? First of all, I’m very honored to work with such an iconic brand. We’ve worked on color pads and color stories, and I’m doing my third “gift with purchase” bag. It’s a global project that’s done really, really well. It’s been great for me to meet all these managers and stores from around the world, and to hear what women are interested in. Print-wise, they let me go wild with color and style. That’s why I like designing swimwear so much. There’s more free space to play. You don’t have to worry as much about what’s happening in the market with trends, and that’s sort of how it has been with Elizabeth Arden. It’s been so much fun. How does your beauty routine change in the summer? Well, I’m in the pool and in the water a lot more, but I still wear mascara during the day. I’m really good at swimming, and even surfing, with my mascara! I have more beach hair, although there are still products involved. I’m very low-maintenance, and my skin care is focused on sunblock. Even though I know I’m not supposed to, I do get a little bit of a tan. Do you have any summer travel plans? Although my twins are two of the most fun people I’ve ever encountered, traveling is not yet their strong suit, so I’m going to stick around here. Traveling just shortens the summer! I’m looking forward to a nice, long, relaxing mellow season out here with my family. I know it’s not even halfway over yet, but I’m already stressing. I don’t want it to end! COURTESY

ESCAPE TO SARDINIA As MaxMara’s U.S. director of retail, Maria Giulia Maramotti spends most of her days in New York City. But when she needs an escape, she hits the open water to go sailing—usually around Sardinia, where she spends her summers. BY ASHLEY BAKER

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Where did you vacation as a child? Ever since I was a little girl, we all would gather at my parents’ house in Sardinia. We would spend about two months there every year, because in Italy, kids have a lot of vacation time. What is your house there like? It’s very quiet and simple, with some trees and big windows watching over the sea. I shared a room with my brother, and we had a huge kitchen where my mother would cook fish. It was really all about being outside. We would walk to the beach, ride bikes, and hang around like little savages. How has Sardinia changed over the years that you have been going there? It has maintained its rough charm, which is what I love the most about it, but throughout the course of the years, it has definitely become more glamorous. When I used to go there, there were not a lot of people coming from outside of Italy. Now, it’s more international. How do you spend your time there as an adult? I’m a very sporty person, and Sardinia is all about being outside. My ritual is to wake up early in the morning and go for a bike ride. Then I go sailing most days, because our sailboat is really close to the harbor. There are a couple of islands that are really close to our house, so we might go there and eat lunch and swim about. Then we usually watch the sunset and come back home. We always have guests, so we eat meals together. It’s so nice to watch the stars and be in complete silence. When did you first start sailing? When I was about 10 years old, I took my first course in Sardinia, and I’ve been sailing ever since. Everyone in my family does it—my brother, my uncles, and a couple of my cousins. It’s really a family passion. Why do you like it so much? I like the fact that I feel completely free, and it puts me very much in touch with the sea and nature. It’s also very technical—it really keeps the mind focused. I get really relaxed when I’m sailing, because all I can

think of is the technical aspects and the incredible sensation of being really close to nature. How often do you sail now and where do you go? I try to sail as much as I can—at least once every three months. I was recently in the San Francisco Bay, and this summer, I’m going to Sardinia and Greece. When I’m in New York City, I take off during the weekends. Do you have a boat in the city? I don’t, but I have a couple of friends who do, so sometimes we hang out on their boats or sometimes I might rent my own. We were in Charleston last weekend, but we mainly go to the Hamptons. I like Montauk and Bellport, which is pretty windy, but everywhere in the Hamptons is very nice. There are a lot of channels around Southampton, and you get to see the coast from a completely different perspective. What’s your summer wardrobe like? My summer wardrobe is very simple— when I’m sailing, it’s denim cutoffs, my Sperry Top-Siders, and a white shirt. I have a collection of Eres bikinis, too. For the evening, I like to go more hippie chic, like very long printed dresses from MaxMara. I also like ethnic skirts and nice sandals or flats. I’m always in flats—I never wear heels in the summer. I like to bring ethnic jewelry and nice belts. Who’s the best cook in the family? My mom is an excellent cook, and I’m good, too. My mom cooks incredible risotto and fish. In Sardinia, she purchases fish directly from the fishermen in the early morning. She does a fantastic oven-cooked sea bass with beautifully cut vegetables. She has a special recipe for an amazing fish pasta, which she makes with fresh tomatoes and mussels. The quality of raw materials is essential—that’s what she taught me.

EARTH ANGEL

When it comes to making the most of natural beauty, Unlimited Earth Care’s founder Frederico Azevedo is in a league of his own. BY ASHLEY BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFANIA CURTO How do you work with clients to come up with a landscape? They basically give me a chance to improve the land, but to do it appropriately with the environment, without creating a clash between the structure of the house and its surroundings. The whole point is to approach the house and have the feeling that everything was created many, many years ago. What’s the story behind this particular property? It was originally a chicken farm—it had no evergreen trees, just flat land and then some overgrown oaks in the back. We cleared and pruned the trees in a way that would give the inside of the house as much light as possible, and created a vast lawn that went throughout the whole property. We developed shade areas, and created boundaries of evergreen trees for screening, centered with perennial flower gardens. We also used ferns, beach grasses, and native plants, like black pines. When you’re given a project like this, what is the first thing you do? Walk to the land and observe everything that already exists there. Then, I try to situate the requirements, like swimming pools, patios, pool houses, flower beds, and screening. I want to get an understanding of how the garden will be seen from inside the house.

Do you find that trees make a bigger difference than most people would imagine? Trees are one of the most important things in landscaping, because they frame the entire project. How did you develop your sense of color? I like a lot of color, and colorful patterns. My sense of colors is to mix them as much as possible because that attracts more wildlife, which I think is what makes the landscaping more attractive and happy. Things like butterflies, hummingbirds, and dragonflies. So you have all this movement in the garden, and with that the mix of bright colors and light colors. You’re known for having a unique sense of color. Where does that come from? Art, and my understanding of how certain pieces of art can turn into much more attractive ones than other ones by the use of color. That’s what brought me to my career in landscaping. Where do you find inspiration for your work? I refer to a lot art as well as fashion—both have a particular movement of colors and patterns. Who is your favorite artist? Van Gogh. And what about fashion? I love Karl Lagerfeld. I like the way that his patterns are so subtle, even though they are filled with ideas.

Who are some of the designers you like to wear? Dior—the designs fit me perfectly. Which landscaping trends are you seeing a lot of these days? Vertical gardens that grow up walls and all the way to the roof. Mixtures of hard and soft landscaping are popular, too—such as stone patios mixed with patterns of succulents or low plants. I use very hardy plants for that, but you do need a special irrigation system for the vertical plantings. Are you doing tons of vegetable gardens? Yes, more and more. We’re doing more organic gardens as well, and I’ve taken that approach since I started my company 22 years ago. I keep improving it in many ways. The essential thing is to take care of the soil —treating the plants is not always essential— and going organic is always the best way to do that. What are the trendiest plants these days? Succulents and ferns. They don’t need much water, and they grow in the shade. There are many different kinds, and they unify color, too. Summer is a busy time for you. How do you relax? By being with my family and paddleboarding. I love to go to Sunset Beach!

My mom has promised me that my nanny will be with me until I go to college. I’m not sure what happens to her then, but we don’t really talk about it.”

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

True Life:

I’M A rich kid

How does a 10-year-old boy among the blessed 1 percent spend his days on the East End? We grilled a precocious (and anonymous) East Hampton progeny to get the scoop on credit cards, chores, and his intriguing media diet. AS TOLD TO EDDIE ROCHE You’ve been weekending here your entire life. It’s an escape from Manhattan. I’ve seen a lot. What do you normally do on the weekend for fun? We go to events and walk around town. I’m not often seen doing the “typical” kid things for boys my age. What kind of events? Well, last summer, I went to Author’s Night in East where I saw Beth Stern and Giada De Laurentiis. I got Giada to sign her cookbook, but I haven’t had my nanny try anything in it yet. They didn’t even have water at the event—only champagne. It wasn’t the most kid-friendly event. What’s the latest must-have item in your circle of friends? The Apple Watch! There are also these model Ferrari toy cars that race up to 40 mph. Does everyone you know have a nanny? They do. Some of my friends have a manny, but that’s not for me. That’s more for the sporty kids. I’m not into that. How long do you get to keep your nanny for? My mom has promised me that my nanny will be with me until I go to college. I’m not sure what happens to her then, but we don’t really talk about it. She started when I was 2. I had a few before her. Are there mean nannies? I’ve actually never seen that. Some of my friends think that mine is strict, but I don’t agree. She has to be tough. That’s her job. What are the responsibilities of your nanny? When she picks me up, she has to bring my phone. Every day she has to charge my phone to 99 percent; I don’t want to overcharge it. She stays with me when my mom is away. I’m a little bit demanding and picky. I’m specific about my food. If the cherry has something in it, like a seed, I don’t want it. I like everything in order. My nanny is also the only person who can touch my gadgets, because she cleans up my room. She also organizes my colognes and combs. Will you have a nanny for your kids? One for each. I had to share. When are your favorite restaurants? I just tried Beautique, which I’d recommend. I had the filet mignon. Every morning we go to the Golden Pear for an iced coffee. What do you think of their prices? Reasonable. What’s your hobby? I don’t really do kid activities. I’m interested in technology and computers. I enjoy going to polo with my dad. I consider myself a kidult. What’s that? A kid who acts like an adult. What do you want to be when you leave kidultood? An entrepreneur who creates my own technology company and then sells it. My friends want to be pilots, astronauts, politicians, typical stuff. Any ladies in your life? I’m a popular guy. I get prank called a lot. Most of my friends don’t date. I get followed a lot by girls. Like, literally—they follow me around and try to touch me. Where would you go on a date in the Hamptons? A ride in a Porsche would be cool. Do you think the girl would like that kind of date? I’ve never thought of that. What’s the most glamorous thing you’ve ever done on the East End? I’ve flown to the Hamptons on a private jet, which was pretty cool, though I’m

not a big fan of small planes. I’ll stay with the Jitney for now. Do a lot of your pals have their own drivers? Most of them have Uber accounts. After all, Uber’s slogan is “Everyone’s Private Driver.” What’s the most mature thing about you? Probably everything. Many people don’t know what they’re going to do in the future, but I’m determined to figure out how to get that done. What’s the most immature thing about you? I still fight with my older brother, but he deserves it. Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met? Jonathan Cheban. It was really, really cool. He was eating at 75 Main, and his security was there; there was a group of seven teenage girls who wanted his picture. He looks really different in person. My idol, though, is Scott Disick. He’s really cool. He’s the whole package. He has cars. Lots of them. What’s your allowance? It’s $350 a month, but if I run out, I’ve memorized my mom’s credit card number so I’m covered. What do you spend it on? Lunch, Starbucks, gadgets. I also do Postmates three times a week in the city. My mom never knows it’s coming until it arrives. In the Hamptons, I like Surf Shop, but I don’t know how to surf. What do you think your allowance should be? About $700 a month seems fair. You have a credit card. What kind? I have a Gold AmEx. Sometimes at stores they question me, like when I was buying chocolate recently, and they looked to my nanny to see if she was going to pay, but I gave them my credit card and they said, “Aren’t you a little young for this?” Do you pay your credit card bill yourself? My mom does. I don’t even look at it. I am too young for that. What are your chores? I don’t have any. I just relax. My nanny does everything. My friends don’t really have chores either. Is that good or bad? It’s great! You get an allowance and you can still relax. That’s a good thing, right? Have you ever mowed a lawn? No. Do you think someday you’ll ever mow a lawn? I highly doubt it. I’ll hire someone to do that. Taken the garbage out? I can’t deal with the smell. What designers do you wear? My favorites are Hugo Boss and Lacoste. That’s basically it. My mom has to travel to Europe to get me Hugo because it isn’t sold in the U.S. for kids. I’m a picky dresser. I get my shoes custom-made. I had a Vans phase because I was really into skateboarding. I have this 14-karat-gold skateboard that I got for my birthday, but I grew out of that stage. What do your friends get in trouble for? A kid at my school got into trouble multiple times for talking too much about private jets and Rolexes. It doesn’t bother me, but for them, it’s too much. What are your reading habits? I’m not really into books. I mostly like magazine articles. My favorite is Forbes. That’s not a joke. My brother thinks it’s really weird. Are you on Facebook? That’s more for my nanny.

I consider myself a kidult.

CLAUDIA SAEZ-FROMM, TOWN

East End story: We’ve leased summer homes in Southampton Village and Bridgehampton for the past few years. This year, I’m really excited about experiencing Sag Harbor. Dining haunts: Beacon is a classic. I get their pork Milanese. Grocery go-to’s: Round Swamp Farm in Bridgehampton. Their tuna and lobster is the best! Workout picks: I’ve been a devoted “Tracy girl” for years! I can’t wait to dance and sweat it out at my good friend [Tracy Anderson’s] East Hampton studio all summer long. Hamptons road rec: Route 114 in East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and to the ferry for Sunset Beach. East End first-timer mandatory activity: Paddleboarding or surfing at Flying Point Surf Camp. Best beach: Hands down, the Cut at Mecox (Flying Point). Its tidal pools make it a perfect place to bring children. There is a beachside as well as a bayside for the kids, so it’s the best of both worlds. Top shops: In 2012 I came across MONC XIII, the most inspiring furniture store! There’s something for everyone. It’s also where I was first introduced to Monica Castiglioni’s wonderful jewelry. Favorite “local” spot: Wölffer Estate Vineyard. Haute cocktail: The Ruby Rita at Beacon in Sag Harbor. It’s a delicious and refreshing blood orange margarita. Best Hamptons celeb sighting: I don’t kiss and tell, but mostly I see celebs at Sunset Beach or at Topping Rose House. Most memorable sales: I was with dear friends one evening last summer in Sagaponack when my friend found out she was pregnant. In one month, we sold their apartment and found them the perfect townhouse downtown for their newly expanding family. A great client is… A client who knows what they want and what it takes to get it. Why working as a team is the secret to success: We [husband Mark David Fromm and I] represent the yin and yang of our business, so our customers get to have the all-encompassing package. Hottest hood du summer: Amagansett is the new exciting town that everyone has been falling in love with. You can snatch up homes that are less expensive on the beach, and there’s a fantastic, low-key vibe.

Haute Properties Who knows the lay of the land more intimately than East End realtors? These five stellar sellers filled The Daily in on their musts. Plus! Memorable tales from trawling the market that you won’t want to miss. BY ALEXANDRA ILYASHOV PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO

ERIN KENEALLY, CORCORAN

Lived out East for… Almost 12 years. Dining haunts: Yama Q, Bell & Anchor, Saaz, and 18 Bay. Grocery go-to’s: Provisions, Bhumi Farms, and Balsam Farmstand. Grilling 101: Serene Green farmstand for fish. Workout picks: Tennis, yoga, running after our Jack Russells. Hamptons road rec: Town Lane and Cranberry Hole Road. East End first-timer mandatory activities: Sag Harbor Farmer’s Market, beach day at Sagg Main, Napeague for a cocktail, Duryeas for lobster, and Talkhouse for live music. Best beach: Sagg Main, Circle Beach, Napeague Beach. Top shops: Relax for loungewear; J.Crew, Theory, and Jildor for shoes; Sylvester & Co. for hostess gifts (and their dreamy iced coffee)! Favorite “local” spot: Shipwreck Bar on Shelter Island; Springs General Store for lunch. Haute cocktail: Jalapeño margarita on the porch at c/o The Maidstone. Most memorable deal, ever: A two-week rental when I first started that led to 12 sales and counting. A great client is… Decisive, transparent, and willing to trust the agent. Hottest hood du summer: Amagansett and anything on or with views of water! Outlandish feature in a property I’ve sold: A three-stop elevator in a two-story house.

ERICA GROSSMAN, DOUGLAS ELLIMAN

Lived out East for… More than 10 years. Dining haunts: Sant Ambroeus, Tutto Il Giorno, and Nick & Toni’s. Grocery go-to’s: The Village Cheese, Jobs Lane Wine & Liquor Shop, and Juice Press. Grilling 101: Cor-J Seafood in Hampton Bays is the best for fresh local fish. Workout picks: Walking and running on the beach. Hamptons road rec: Route 114 when driving from Southampton out East. East End first-timer mandatory activity: Pumpkin and apple picking at Milk Pail in Watermill. Best beach: Little Plains and Flying Point. Top shops: I love Southampton Village; I frequent Tenet, Home Nature, and Norah’s. Favorite “local” spot: Meschutt Beach on a Monday night watching the sunset while listening to a great band. Haute cocktail: Bloody Mary at the American Hotel. Best Hamptons celeb sighting: Baz Luhrmann—he came to preview one of my listings for a Chanel commercial. Prospective Hamptons buyers must ask… “Is this property a good value?” A great client is… Loyal, honest, and respectful. Hottest hoods du summer: Southampton, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and North Haven. Outlandish feature in a property I’ve sold: A secret hidden room behind a bookshelf.

NANCY MIZRAHI, SAUNDERS

Lived out East for… 14 years. Dining haunts: Nick & Toni’s and the 1770 House. Grocery go-to’s: Cavaniola’s in Sag Harbor and Round Swamp Farms. Grilling 101: Sea Food Shop in Wainscott, plus Citarella. Workout picks: A walk on the beach. Hamptons road rec: Mecox Rd., ending in Wainscott. Best beach: They’re all great! If I had to choose, I’d say Gibson Road and Peter’s Pond in Sagaponack. Favorite “local” spot: Pike Farms in Sagaponack, Harry at Fairview Farm for pies. Haute cocktail: Beeta-rita at Topping Rose House. Best Hamptons celeb sighting: Paul McCartney. Most memorable sale, ever: Billy Joel’s oceanfront in Sagaponack. A great client is… Open-minded and loyal. Hottest hood du summer: Bridgehampton. Outlandish feature in a property I’ve sold: A flower cutting room in the 2006 Hampton designer show house built by Michael Burns.

MATTHEW BREITENBACH, Douglas Elliman

Dining haunts: I’m a Bobby Van’s guy. Grilling 101: The Clamman in Southampton, for lobsters prepped for the grill and vegetables. Workout picks: Flywheel in Southampton. Hamptons driving shortcut: If I told you, I would have to kill you. East End first-timer mandatory activity: Find a friend with a boat and get out on the water. Favorite “local” spot: MJ Dowling’s in Sag Harbor is the best sports pub in the Hamptons. Haute cocktail: Perfect margarita from La Superica in Sag Harbor. Most memorable sales: I just sold Jason Kidd’s house in Water Mill. I’m part of Douglas Elliman’s new sports and entertainment division, and this was its first sale. It was an honor working with a Hall of Fame athlete. I originally sold him the house for $5 million in 2012, and two years later was able to make him more than $2 million in profits when I sold the house for him for $7.1 million. It’s always a nice feeling to make money for your clients. Prospective Hamptons buyers must ask… “Am I priced correctly?” A great client… becomes a friend. I’m all about relationships that go deeper than business. Outlandish feature in a property I’ve sold: A dinosaur head in the living room of a Sagaponack house. I’m pretty sure it was a replica, but you know you’ve made it if you have a T. rex in your entry foyer. c o v e r : s tefa n ia c u r to ; s h u tte r s to c k

Love LESSONS Who understands summer’s most delicious activities better than Elle’s storied advice columnist, E. Jean Carroll? BY ASHLEY BAKER ILLUSTRATION BY DONALD ROBERTSON

When it comes to summer love and romance, you’re an authority. This summer, we should all go relive our favorite summer of all time. Wear what you wore then, eat what you ate then, listen to the music that you listened to, and date the guys you dated then. What if you’re married? Then you have your exes over for dinner! What was your best summer ever? Oh man, this is it. See, I’m the old crone on top of the mountain. The summers that have gone by? They’re gone. The summers that are coming? They’re gone. You only have right now! This is the season when women want to attract men like flies to honey. What’s the best way to do that? It’s the oldest thing I can say, but it’s absolutely true: Just be interested in the man. It is absolutely electrifying when someone is interested in you. There’s no woman who is so old or so ugly that she cannot seduce a man. When you turn your eyes to him, you let him know he’s the only man on Earth. Then look away. And then bring back that powerful, powerful attention. You torment him! You tease him! Love is a chase. What should we wear? A great summer dress can kill a man. It can absolutely floor him! I feel amazed when people don’t know that’s a fact. What’s your favorite means of summer entertainment? Badminton. Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Jumping out of planes is good. Walking the dog. Tennis, Ping-Pong…and you can meet a lot of good guys on the golf course. You can also meet them at the driving range! Where is the absolute best place to meet men in New York City? The men’s room at Yankee Stadium. I am dead serious! I was there two weeks ago, and I have never seen so many great guys in my life. What are your thoughts on summer flings? I’m for ’em. Here’s the thing: We’re only on this Earth to enjoy as many men as we FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

possibly can. That’s it. That’s our purpose. Mother Nature wants us enjoying sex and falling in love! Is the summer a busy time of year in the life of an advice columnist? Yes! I get the biggest rush of letters around Christmas, but in the summer, people do tend to get jammed and run slightly wild. How many letters do you get? Around 200 a month. I’m not counting the letters that I get from people saying, “I just texted him, and then he texted me back…now what should I say?” You only publish a handful of letters in Elle. Do you respond to others privately? Yes, yes, yes. See this is the thing about having an advice column—it churns you up. What about the little girl who writes to you because she can’t afford a pair of shoes for the prom? What are you going to do? Send her the 40 bucks, n right? Forty bucks Jea es .
