ALL ABOARD!

SCENE

Summer has arrived—at least we think? We don’t need to remind you that 2020 has been one of the most unusual years on record, but one thing remains the same—and in fact, truer now than ever before—the East End is still the place to be. Even if you’re sheltering in place, the good life awaits, in the form of bucolic nature and weekly deliveries (avec vin) from Eataly. We’ve got three issues of Daily dish to delight you all season long. So pour yourself a glass, douse yourself in SPF, find the nearest Adirondack chair, and enjoy!

BEST FEET FORWARD! Just because you’ve been wearing Birkenstocks for the past 11 weeks and counting doesn’t mean that such behavior is destined to continue. The footwear scene in East Hampton is stronger than ever, as Golden Goose Deluxe Brand has joined the ranks of Jimmy Choo and Shoe-Inn.

DAILY QUIZ!

Guess which item did not appear in the police blotter of a recent edition of The East Hampton Star? A cashier at 7-Eleven confiscated Brendan Lawlor’s valid ID on the afternoon on June 3rd, thinking it was fake. Mr. Lawlor called police, but before they arrived the cashier realized his mistake and gave it back. A woman who is said by police to be a frequent caller called again on June 3rd, late at night, to file a report of “virtual embodiment.” An FBI agent, she said, was virtually occupying her being.

Mary-Kate Checks In! After a rather hellish mid-lockdown breakup with Olivier Sarkozy, Mary-Kate Olsen has found solace on the East End in a stylish rental—for a mere $325,000 for the season. (For the record, that’s the cost of approximately 130 of The Row’s popular XL Drawstring Hobo Bags.)

Summer1_Fix1_APPROVED_DQ.indd 1

Reports of loud leaf blowers were flying all over last Thursday and the day before, ringing in the village’s new lawn-care equipment noise law. Police gave out warnings on Bailow Lane, Gingerbread Lane, Dayton Lane, Buell Lane, and at the intersection of Mill Hill and Toilsome lanes. Later that evening, a Garden Street resident called police to say that a drunken man was knocking on his door. Police arrived in time to find the man still knocking. He told them he had been fishing with his friends and gotten separated. Officers assisted him to the 7-Eleven on Long Island Avenue, where he thought he might find his buddies.

ANSWER: THEY’RE ALL TRUE!

RIHANNA, IS THAT YOU? The stylish musician, beauty mogul, and fashion designer has snapped up a waterfront rental in North Sea from mid-July to mid-August. Fun fact: It’s the same spot where the Kardashians lived back in 2014, when they were filming Kourtney & Khloé Take the Hamptons. The five-bedroom, six-and-a-half bath home is currently on the market for $10.99 million. In addition to the usual pool and dock, it comes with a boat and Jet Skis. See you around town?

PIZZA PARTY! Are you missing Chef Ryan Hardy’s farro salad, cacio e pepe, and Diavola pizza? Join the club. Luckily, the fine people at Hardy’s Delicious Hospitality Group, which owns Charlie Bird, Pasquale Jones, and Legacy Records, are now making weekly deliveries to the Hamptons. Taste treats include frozen pizzas, ovenready lasagna, homemade gelato, and inspired bundles of their sommeliers’ favorite wines.

PATRICK MCMULLAN (3); GETTY IMAGES (1); SHUTTERSTOCK (19); ALL OTHERS COURTESY

There’s no better place to isolate than on your own private yacht. Now, you needn’t be David Geffen to get (some version of) the experience, thanks to GetMyBoat, a boat rental and charter app that services the Hamptons, as well as other waterfront areas throughout the state of New York. Just a few short taps on your phone, and your captain will await.

SUMMER 2020

AN OVERDUE CATCHUP! WITH NICOLE MILLER

How have the past few months been for you? It’s been a strange time for all of us. I was able to make masks, which allowed me to go to the office a couple of times a week. We all got to be very DIY—we were tie-dying and embroidering a lot! Tell us more about the masks… We imported a lot of surgical masks— more than 20,000—which we donated to various hospitals and organizations. We made thousands of cotton masks domestically as well, which we sold on our website and donated a percentage of sales. Also, we made silk masks in some of our vintage prints. How are you enjoying working from home? I really love collaborating with my team, so it hasn’t been great for me. I often feel limited working at home. It’s been helpful to be at the office a couple of days a week, though, just to have a change of environment. What does the Nicole Miller Spring/Summer collection look like? I love my new Summer collection. It’s very soft and feminine, and super easy to wear. I always look forward to wearing summer dresses, even if I’m just at home. Hopefully I’ll have more places to wear them to soon! Where will we be able to find your delicious rosé this summer? I already had some at Le Bilboquet in Sag Harbor! You can buy it at Cavaniola’s, and wineexpress.com will ship anywhere!

SCENE

Outdoor dining has arrived! Nick & Toni’s, Coche Comedor, Serafina, and even Crow’s Nest are just a few of the East End haute spots that are welcoming back guests. You have been missed! • The shows must go on— sort of! Guild Hall’s physical building may be closed for the time being, but virtual programming continues. We can’t wait for the online benefit reading of Same Time, Next Year, directed by Bob Balaban. Alec Baldwin will star as the male lead, and rumor has it that Tina Fey has been approached to be his leading lady… • Parties, parties, parties? Not so much. But leave it to Blade CEO Rob Wiesenthal and Cinema Society’s Andrew Saffir to kick off the (peculiar) summer ’20 season with a drive-in movie screening of Disney’s Artemis Fowl. The event was philanthropic in nature, as ticket sales supported the East End’s food pantries. Bob Balaban, Jane Rosenthal, and Eddie Burke Jr. co-hosted.

CALL OF THE WYLD!

A new boutique from Sasha and Oliver Benz has hit Montauk. At Wyld Black, located two doors down from its sister Wyld Blue, the very best of city-chic fashion awaits. Emerging brands like Auteur, SIR The Label, and KBH Jewels are sold alongside accessories from the likes of Dior and Balenciaga. Don’t miss the adorable childrenswear,

FANCY A SANDWICH?

Matt Lambert, the Michelin-starred chef of the Musket Room in New York, has teamed up with wine expert Vanessa Price to develop the Stone Lion Inn space on Edgemere Street into a cool summer restaurant concept. Sweet Az is a casual, grab-and-go café specializing in delicious “sandos” (that’s “sandwiches” in Kiwi, as Lambert hails from New Zealand). But if you’re carb-averse, fear not—there will also be various salads. Plus, a $120 “Lavish Larry,” a potato topped with caviar and sour cream. sweetazsandos.com

MEATBALL MUST! Carbone out East? It doesn’t get

any better. The storied Manhattan restaurant has opened a pop-up location in Southampton that offers takeout and contactless pickup. The menu is stocked with the dishes you’ve been craving—the spicy rigatoni in a vodka sauce (be still our hearts!), veal parm, Caesar alla ZZ, Mario’s Meatballs, and more. 230 Elm Street,

jewelry, and homewares, too. 716 Montauk Hwy, Store 4, Level 2, Montauk, wyldblack.store

CALLING ALL MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!

Okay, you Midtown power lunchers. This one’s for you. Marea, the breathtakingly expensive and yet profoundly delicious seafood spot on Central Park South, is now delivering dinner kits to the East End. A mere $450 will feed four famished foodies; a recent menu included brined beef brisket, along with potato gratin, asparagus, green bean salad, heirloom tomato and burrata, and to top it all off, pie. Subscriptions are also available, but we’re too afraid to look at the pricing. order.marea-nyc. com/hamptons

Editor in chief and president Lizzi Bickford said, “Thank you so much for believing in us and welcoming us with open arms. This has been a labor of love for all of us, and we are so excited to see it grow and flourish with your help and support in the years to come.” Notable attendees, including Sarah Wetenhall, Elisabeth Munder, Darcy Fogg, JoAnna Myers, and Brandie Herbst, sipped rosé and perused the gorgeous issue. The guests were treated to a special surprise from jewelry designer Haverhill Leach, who brought a selection from her latest collection and gifted each guest with a customized piece. They then enjoyed a gourmet lunch featuring the restaurant’s crab cakes, Billionaire’s Bacon, beautifully poached salmon, and decadent desserts.

Sustainable Beauty CANDICE SWANEPOEL has spent a good part of her career wearing bathing suits, so it’s only fitting that eventually she’d bank on her killer bod and start her own line. The 31-yearold supermod became an instant entrepreneur when she launched Tropic of C, an ecologically responsible swimwear line that women can’t get enough of. Here, she tells THE DAILY SUMMER all about this hit venture and what got her to stop and smell the roses. By EDDIE ROCHE Photography by JEROME DURAN

What did you miss about working? I miss traveling to new places, and I miss the teams of incredible people that I work with. Your swimwear brand, Tropic of C, is a favorite at The Daily. How has it evolved over the years, and how do you describe it to new customers? The brand keeps evolving, and it’s so rewarding to see that every day we reach more women in all corners of the world. We have a solid swimwear presence and have connected with customers via

some of our best sellers, like the Mama Africa collection or the C Collection, while introducing new fashion styles and diversifying our offerings. For example, this season we collaborated with a female artisan group in Peru and made beautiful hand-knitted crochet tops. We also introduced our first collection of knit separates in stripes and organic cotton T-shirts that can be worn to the beach and beyond. Tropic of C is a brand for conscious consumers; I wanted our customer to wear the

How have you spent the past few months in quarantine? I’ve been spending a lot of time in nature, outside with my boys. It’s been a blessing not having to travel like I normally do. What did you learn about yourself? I focused a lot on myself and my kids, and took a break from social media. I’ve been thinking about the things that are most important to me. And the things that aren’t necessary. The quarantine has been a time of rest and reflection.

“THE BRAND KEEPS EVOLVING, AND IT’S SO REWARDING TO SEE THAT EVERY DAY WE REACH MORE WOMEN IN ALL CORNERS OF THE WORLD.” pieces because they love the look and feel but also what we stand for. The brand is ecologically responsible, which is tough in the swimwear category. Tell us how you’re accomplishing this. Since the beginning when I was creating branding, I really wanted to create a brand that was conscious of its impact on the planet and use new innovations to create products that continually aim to reduce the environmental impact of our production through ongoing sustainable fabric development and refining our manufacturing processes. We focused in two areas—our fabrics and our packaging. Most of our fabrics used upcycled or regenerated nylon. This means we bring very little virgin nylon, closing the loop by participating in a circular economy. Also our prints are done digitally, drastically reducing water usage and electricity but also waste. In the case of our packaging, we are proud our bags and mailer are made out of bioplastics that are biodegradable and compostable. Our main labels also use recycled polyester, and our hang tags are made from bamboo, while our envelopes use stone paper. We spent a lot of time on these details, and we do pay a premium, but we know our customer cares and it fulfills the promise we made on our mission as a brand and a team. Where does your passion for the environment come from? I grew up on a farm in South Africa, where I was always playing outside with my brother. Appreciation for nature is something that was instilled in me from a young age, and I continue to have a great passion and appreciation for the environment. What have some of your best sellers been over the years? Some of our best sellers are our most classic and simple silhouettes and our favorites from the beginning. The C Collection is very identifiable because we use extra thin cording, and our stitching all around is quite difficult to execute. We wanted to create these styles with minimal seams to be very delicate and feminine. South Pacific—in both black and in leopard—resonates with customers all over the world; it has a retro corset look that is flattering, making it an instant classic. Our Mama Africa print grew into a collection of numerous styles. This classic leopard print is quite iconic and continues to be a favorite. We’re growing it even further for Resort. Where are you selling the line? We sell via our own e-commerce, tropicofc.com, where we have the collection in full. We have partnered with an amazing set of multibrand retailers around the world—Selfridges in the U.K., Moda Operandi, My Theresa, and Luisa Via Roma as luxury online retailers, and Holt Renfrew in Canada as part of their sustainable Holt project presentation. recently launched at Bandier and will be opening a popup at Fred Segal in Los Angeles for two months to give our customers a chance to shop the collection in person. What’s your favorite part of working on the line? Fittings are definitely my favorite part, and when all my creative input comes to life. We transform styles and create new ways of finishing, adding details, and making sure my ideas are executed. It also triggers my fantasies on how to shoot the styles, what location, and with who. You also model your own designs. Is there anything different about modeling your own creations? Yes, I’m not only the model but also the art director on our shoots, so I get to apply all I learned working with so many amazing photographers, stylists, and creatives. My work in front of the camera is only a piece. I’m very involved in the planning of the photo shoots and campaigns, creating mood boards, casting other models, editing the images, and how we present and launch the collections on our channels. Any fun plans for this summer? Depending on the situation, I hope that I am able to spend some time at the beach with my boys. Quarantine was a time for self-improvement for a lot of people. What did you accomplish during the experience? I’ve had a couple of different stages during this quarantine. At first I was cooking like a maniac and impressed myself with my talents in the kitchen, then I started gardening and spending more time outside. Now I’m in an organizing period, going through my home and throwing out things I don’t need and clearing my space for new energy to flow. I’m all about minimalism and thinking about my goals for the future. I definitely needed a break from the fast pace of the world and have enjoyed having this moment to stop and smell the roses.

“We both felt we needed to get our minds off all the uncertainty and effects on the economy COVID-19 was causing, so with this gift of time off work, we took advantage of low interests rates and bought our first home. With time on our side, we purchased a bit of a fixer-upper that we have been renovating ourselves and doing before and after videos and pictures on our YouTube channel (Jolo Vlogs) and Instagrams (@joshknightlee and @willow.hand). We believe that even with all the uncertainty we all can still work hard to move toward our goals in life. More than ever the world needs positive energy, because we’re all in this together and we all can do more than we think we can.” —JOSH KNIGHT AND WILLOW HAND, MODELS

GOOD NEWS! A WIN FOR THE LGBT+ COMMUNITY!

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that a federal law prohibiting discrimination based on sex should be understood to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

We don’t have to tell you that the past few months have been tough on us all, so we’ve been asking friends of THE DAILY SUMMER to send some good news our way. From the little things that improved their lives and hearts to major moments that will impact them forever, here are some of the positive things that have made a difficult time more bearable. By EDDIE ROCHE

“A positive has been having the time to fully focus on HUNU, the company I founded last year. I have used this time to interact with our customers, build out our platforms, and to learn more and think of new ways we can build a better planet together.”

“A little good news coming out of the stay-at-home order we have been under these past few months is that I have had invaluable one-on-one time with my husband, Johannes. For two people who travel more often than not, having quality time at home together with our pup, Mr. Butler, is a rarity, and we’ve been given a special opportunity to do so. It’s been a silver lining to what has been a dark cloud casted over all of us.” —OLIVIA PALERMO, INFLUENCER

“Gardening started as a homeschooling class and a way to get my children outside during quarantine, but now I have a green thumb. It’s such a relaxing and cathartic hobby that is much needed after the past few months. I have been wanting to do this for years and never had the time. Well, I certainly found the time this spring.” —SHOSHANNA GRUSS, DESIGNER

“I always felt that performing a creative act is the best cure for what ails me. For me, expressing myself creatively, whether in writing or by painting, does the trick when times are tough. I’ve been missing so much our photo shoots for The Daily Summer, which would have happened during this period, that I first started drawing up portraits that would look like imaginary Daily covers. Then I forgot about covers and about drawing beautiful model-like girls and started painting women, all kinds of women, lots and lots of portraits. I have about 30 of these portraits, and I’m not stopping. So now that the days are long, after I finish the Zoom meetings and e-mails and spreadsheets and calls, I spend a couple of hours on the porch in the fragrant early summer breeze and…paint.”

“I’m realizing more clearly that my love of cooking is not just the act of putting food on a plate, but about bringing people, ideas, and cultures together.” —PETER SOM, DESIGNER

“I’ve been spending a lot of my time baking and cooking, which I’ve loved! This is a cake I baked for our design director Chad’s birthday last week. It’s a pear almond cake with rum whipping cream. I’ve become a much better baker during quarantine with all the birthdays.… There’s been a birthday every week!” —LAURA KIM, CO-CREATIVE DIRECTOR, OSCAR DE LA RENTA AND MONSE

“During the quarantine, I received an online gift from Matheus Yashi, a Brazilian web designer, who developed an Instagram filter inspired by me. “In the past few weeks, we’ve seen an increased awareness in racial equality against black people in America. Although it can be tough to see the light at times, I’m proud of the continued efforts I’ve seen take place to help change and practice progressive consciousness worldwide. We’ve gotten to see how passionate, powerful, and bold we as a human race can be when we decide to come together to not only understand, but help one another and fight for what’s right. The unfortunate murder of George Floyd and all the terrible circumstances that followed after have ignited a serious fire to move forward fiercely and in the right direction. Books by black authors are sold out, black influence is being celebrated and empowered, and there seems to be more education and curiosities about our political system. These positives are good news. —IGEE OKAFOR, INFLUENCER, EDITOR AND FOUNDER, BOND OFFICIAL

“My brother and I have been living together in NYC during quarantine. He moved away after college, and we haven’t spent time together really since childhood. Now that we’re inside together all the time, we have been playing card games, drawing, taking photos together, and seriously bonding. Haven’t felt this close to my brother in more than a decade!”

“My New York City apartment dog and I went to Vermont during quarantine. He got to experience doggy heaven on earth, playing in the grassy fields, running in the woods, and drinking from the natural streams!” —MARY LEEST, INFLUENCER

“I was surprised to see how easily I was able to adjust to living with less and needing less. In quarantine, all I’ve needed is the supermarket, the post office, and the local gas station convenience store, which sells the best raspberry pie ever. “ As sisters, aged 27 and 25, we never expected to be spending so much time together, and we certainly never expected to actually love it. From the morning workouts and socially distant walks to afternoon meetings and family home-cooked dinners, there was a peaceful rhythm to our days that we hadn’t experienced in years. “In the middle of the pandemic, with both of my shows for E! off the air, I was devastated to say the least, but I stopped feeling sorry for myself and decided to get to work. I transformed my guest room in Montauk into a full-service studio with lighting equipment, cameras, and a green screen. I had no idea how to do this when I started, but after a lot of YouTube and some FaceTimes, I was able to successfully set up all the equipment by myself. This “renovation” made it possible to launch an all-new show called E! Pop on Peacock for NBC’s brand-new streaming platform (launching July 15th). “Over the past three months, I became a lawn specialist. I had to refresh my yard in Sag Harbor, because I had some dry and brown spots on the lawn. I researched online how to fix it, and I found a few recommendations for grass regrowth and how to maintain it. I needed to learn about what particular grass seeds to use for my lawn. But first, I needed to use a lawn scarifier, or a dethatcher, to cut through the soil. After I had spent hours handraking, this machine was a game changer. On top of that, I bought an electric tiller, which turns the soil and prepares it for planting. After many days of hard work, I’m so happy with the result. The lawn came back to life, and my yard has never looked better. What a great experience! Now I’m thinking of buying an exotic car for the summer…I mean a riding mower.” —DAVID FLORENTIN, MODEL

“I used the past few months of quarantine as a way to offer my mental well-being something special. I tried to use it as an invitation to slow down my usual fast-paced life and reconnect with myself and my family. There was something truly unique about living a simpler life without the fear of missing out on a big work event, 30th-birthday party, or wedding. I know that so many were not as fortunate to have the space to be comfortable in isolation, and I really took that to heart with everything I did in both my personal life and in my digital community. —KATIE SANDS, INFLUENCER

A new study, published by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, suggests that doing altruistic acts, such as volunteering, could help us live longer. The study found that people over the age of 50 who volunteer for two days a week have a substantially reduced risk of mortality, less chance of developing physical impairments, and an improved sense of well-being compared with those who don’t.

Here, they share the lessons they learned, the skills they picked up, and what they took away from their time-out from the world. We also couldn’t help but ask what they were eating! By EDDIE ROCHE

“I am trying to write, and any writer knows that any household or organizing tasks must be completed before writing can begin! So I have been rearranging furniture, putting up pictures, sorting out my kitchen shelves. If the snow would just stop happening every couple of days I will be working on setting up my hot tub. I have achieved a lot!” —ALAN CUMMING, ACTOR/AUTHOR

“This experience has made me even more grateful to be with my family. I love them to pieces. I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else in the world right now but with my family. They realign me and keep me inspired and motivated to be my best self. Nothing and no one can match the energy and joy they give me. Being with them has changed my outlook on unconditional love and unity.” —ALTON MASON, MODEL

I’ve filled up two sketchbooks, a watercolor pad, made four candles, countless origami, and even built a shoe rack out of wood I had laying around, but the best of all is playing with [my dog] Benji and teaching him new tricks. Work took me away from him a lot, so I love every second I get to cuddle him!… Living in New York where it seems everyone walking past you has an agenda, you tend to forget how genuine and humane people can be. “I think I’ve learned that I really have got it. We rely a lot on people around us, after all it takes a village, right? But when it’s all taken away from you—it’s pretty scary to be a full-time single mom, a cook, a cleaner, a teacher, a full-time activity provider, a good friend, have time for yourself, and also focus on your work. But it’s a great feeling to know no matter what happens—you have got it.” —ANNE V, MODEL

“We’ve always appreciated but never realized how much we rely on essential workers. We are both so grateful to those risking their lives working on the frontline, but we’ll also never again take for granted the little things, such as stepping out for a quick haircut or hugging a friend! We want to start again but without forgetting this period and doing that with a new perspective and spirit. Being strong, taking care, and giving the right value to things.” —DEAN AND DAN CATEN, CO-CREATIVE DIRECTORS, DSQUARED2

“I cook a lot. Veggie burgers on the grill, turkey burgers, quinoa protein bowls, egg white omelets, chocolate chip banana pancakes, homemade brownies, baked sweet potato fries.… I’m selfisolating with my son, Levi, Levi’s mom, and my husky, Batman. As long as I have them, I know I can get through this.” —CHAD WHITE, MODEL

Unlimited Earth Care’s creative visionary and sustainability expert FREDERICO AZEVEDO gives us a lesson in love—of the birds, bees, plants, and our home. THE DAILY SUMMER sat down with the awardwinning landscape designer at his Bridgehampton HQ to discuss the importance of living in the moment, taking chances, and reconnecting with nature. By LIZZI BICKFORD

GETTY IMAGES (1); PATRICKMCMULLAN.COM (1); SHUTTERSTOCK (1); ALL OTHERS COURTESY

Let’s talk about happy things because this is the Good News issue. What are you looking forward to most this summer in the Hamptons? Well, I’m looking forward to keep doing what I love to do—keep creating beautiful gardens and environments, as I always have. It brings me such joy to see clients rediscovering their properties and reimagining them. Many of my clients are spending more time in the Hamptons than ever before; they’re seeing trees bloom that they’ve never noticed. They didn’t know that they had dogwood trees or cherry trees on their properties—and we’re celebrating these moments by integrating these newly discovered elements into their landscaping. So that was a good thing that happened during the pandemic—people are connecting more to nature and appreciating the year-round beauty of the East End. When was the first moment you fell in love with gardening? When I was a child in Brazil, about 5 years old, I always wanted to be in the garden. My mother gave me a plot of land, and I grew a vegetable garden. I was fascinated by all plants—but especially carrots. The green up top and the orange below—what you saw on the surface was not the whole picture! I loved that. Also, my mother was the master of carrot soufflés, so this was a great way to encourage her to make more of them! You are originally from Brazil and you moved to England to study at Oxford. Tell us how you discovered the Hamptons. I had a job opportunity in New York doing Japanese

gardens, but there was a little bit of a clash because the company was more into the traditional Japanese design, and I am more into modern Japanese, which uses more plant material than rocks and gravel. I felt like there was not really room for me there, but I became close with the owner of the company and she said, “I have a friend in the Hamptons who needs somebody with your talent. Would you like to go work for her?” Two weeks later, I moved to the East End, and six months after that, I opened my own company. That was 27 years ago. So you’ve really seen the evolution of the Hamptons. Yes, and the evolution of sophistication. We all became more sophisticated. Today, we control the sprinkler systems by our phone. Everything is much easier to do now than it was before. There’s all this evolution and sophistication integrated into the way we design gardens, too. The way that I studied is completely different from the way that I do stuff now. Your brand ethos is about sustainability, not only in landscaping, but in the way we live. You provide the opportunity for clients to really love their homes, which is more important now than ever. And you go a few steps further by educating your clients about the natural beauty around them and the opportunity to nourish their bodies and souls from the ground up. Tell us more about that. The process of designing a garden is about integration—into the land and the life of my clients. I create outdoor spaces that are more than just gardens—they are a legacy—something the whole family can enjoy, learn about, care for, and create memories in together. My clients are discovering that they can have vegetable gardens in their own backyard, which means they go to the grocery store less and nourish themselves with the food they grow at home. I mean, I have so many requests for vegetable gardens. Now, I am not just doing my job—I am coaching my clients on how it’s done! It seems we’re all looking to “give back” these days. In what ways does cultivating a garden do this, and what organizations are you passionate about supporting? Designing and building a garden is really the creation of an ecosystem. We always try to increase the number of botanical varieties a client already has. We want to attract more beneficial insects that give to the land. That is the whole idea. It’s not just like, you have something that looks good, but it’s gone in a flash. This is about making the earth more healthy— something that will get better and better over time. The deeper your understanding of the earth, the deeper your love for it becomes—that’s important. I also support the Madoo Conservancy as much as I possibly can, as well as LongHouse Reserve and the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. Is there a project that you’re most excited about? I love all the projects. There’s nothing I don’t love and if so, I wouldn’t do it…and my clients know that very well. [Laughs] It’s good to establish that at the beginning. What was one of your most challenging projects? Everything is a challenge when you have a vision for things but also want to work with the land in its natural form. There was one project in 1995 that really put my brand on the map in the U.S. When I came to America in 1990, everything was white. Philippe Starck was everything. Martha Stewart was on top and all she would do is white on white. I was like, “What is this?” I am Brazilian, so color is a big

factor in my life. I had one client on Middle Lane in East Hampton and they had just about finished the house. When I presented the project, they asked me, “What is the color scheme?” I said, “It’s going to be yellow, orange, and red.” They gasped! [Laughs] Startling! What happened next? I designed an immense garden for them in front of their taupe house that had 2,000 yellow, orange, and red flowers. When we finished the project, it became a major tourism attraction in East Hampton. On any given day, there would be a line of cars passing by just to see it. It was incredible, but it took a lot of courage.

WARM WEATHER ANTHEM “Blinding Lights,” by The Weeknd

I remember my client asking, “What are the neighbors going to say about it?” I said, “You have to ask, what is your land going say about it?” You’re going to create an ecosystem. You’re going to get beneficial birds, beneficial insects. You’re going to get all this legacy inside of your land, and that is the most important. And we got it. We did it! Do you have any other passions outside of flowers, plants, and sustainability? My kids. I raised them in the Hamptons—this is our home. I love to participate in their lives…probably more than they’d like me to!

TUNES

THE MUSIC MAN One of the most likable and easy-on-the-eyes Montauk staples is OLI BENZ, who is synonymous with good times at Surf Lodge. This summer, he’s releasing his first single, “Rhythm Romance,” which is out now. He tells us how he spent his time in lockdown and what to expect this year. By EDDIE ROCHE Photography by AUDREY AMELIE RUDOLF

You come from a family of music. Tell us a little bit about your upbringing. I’m from a small coastal Australian town, Noosa Heads. My father was a jazz musician, so I grew up learning reed instruments and playing worship music in church from a young age. Music has always been a part of my life, and I believe it will be something I instill in my home as a parent now, too. There’s something special about a home filled with music. Was ending up in the music world inevitable for you? It wasn’t ever a goal, but music kept chasing me.

I’ve tried a lot of other things—modeling, acting, dancing—before arriving to this moment. What music did you grow up on? My parents listened to strictly worship music, Christian, indie, and jazz. I discovered alternative and punk rock in high school. To this day, the Ramones, Blink-182, Coldplay, Foals…are still some of my biggest influences. What eventually brought you to the States? A modeling contract is what eventually lured me to New York. But realistically, [wife] Sasha had made a

decision she wanted to live there and chase the dream, so there was no turning back after that. What were some of the highlights of modeling? It was the ease of the job that I loved. It paid the bills during the day while I could explore my creative side in music at night. It also introduced me to so many important people and friends in my life—there’s such a crossover in the scenes of fashion, music, and nightlife in New York. How did you meet Sasha? It is a pretty wild story, actually. About 14 years ago on

“THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT A HOME FILLED WITH MUSIC.” Halloween, Sasha was dressed up as a bride from hell, and I was in a Zorro mask. I started to make quirky small talk with her at what was a raging party. Almost moments later, an older couple approached us and said what a gorgeous pair we made. In a cheeky drunken reply she said, “Well actually, we’ve been married for years and have two kids at home.” We proceeded to fabricate this whole life together with kids’ names and ages, and just blabbed on and then kind of stumbled away and that was that. About two years later, I was introduced to Sasha through my best friend at the time, and we instantly hit it off and started dating. About six months in, we had a standard fight, and as a semi half-joke I said to her, “Never mind, I have already met the girl of my dreams, the bride from hell!” Her face went white. I realized then and there that she was that horror bride from the Halloween party! Hilarious! When did you first start coming to the Hamptons? Many years ago, we were living in New York City and I knew I needed to escape the city life and find the ocean. So we would come to Montauk on the weekends as we heard there were consistent waves. Eventually, I discovered the local culture out here and couldn’t get enough. It reminds me of island life in Australia. And now you’re releasing your first single this summer. “Rhythm Romance” is a love story between someone’s soul and the power of the rhythm of music. It’s housepop, so it’s got just the right amount of groove and is a great soundtrack for summer. Why was it finally the right time to release a song? I wrote the song last year, so I’ve actually held on to it for a while. It’s such a strong one that I just kept coming back to. It’s a blend between my heritage and past influences mixed with the music I love to DJ. I’ve also got a disco edit coming out at the same time as the original, both of which I love the same. How will people be able to find it? All your main music streams—Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. What does your son, Rhythm, think of the song? He loves it. It’s something we share together, listening in the car or in the backyard on a beautiful day. He understands his name is in the song, but I don’t think he realizes yet that his dad actually wrote the song. Will you be touring? I’ve given ear teasers by playing it at Surf Lodge’s Memorial Day virtual concert, and I will, of course, be playing it everywhere this summer. Maybe touring is my next project? What do you think Surf Lodge will be like this summer? I think it’ll be different but totally awesome. Think tranquil hotel vibes on a quiet island in Greece. I highly recommend staying and or just eating there—if we can get that far.

DEVOTED DAD Benz named his first single after his son, Rhythm.

RETAIL THERAPY Sasha at the Wyld Black store

Where did you spend quarantine? We’ve been home in Montauk, and the kids had no idea. We had just arrived home after four months of consistent travel, and were ready to bunker down and be quiet at home. So things didn’t really change much for us. Those months are usually quiet anyway as we gear up for the summer. What did you learn about yourself during that time? Probably that I thought I could live like that for a very long time. We’re so comfortable at home and spending time together as a family. I realized that

when it comes down to it, hanging out and socializing with a group, even if it’s just your family or your five closest friends, is super important and sometimes all you need. This is going to be a summer unlike any other. What are you doing to make it as normal as possible? We will have people over to the house for afternoons and dinners in the backyard. I still get to play live music from the studio, and I still get to surf. So in some way things are as normal as it gets. It’s nice to bunker down and keep focus on what’s next.

MERMAID

MOMENT

It’s time! The summer rays have hit the Hamptons, and as the masses reemerge, so do the sun-soaked tresses. With Tahitian-born surfer-turnedswimwear-designer Hanalei Reponty as the face of Kérastase’s new Soleil collection campaign, THE DAILY SUMMER had to find out just how to snag that “It” mermaid du moment look. Hairstylist and salon owner of z(ed) New York CARLY QUIST gives her insider tips for the season.

more carefree and fun. Your hair should definitely channel that vibe. Have you spotted any trends? Because we’ve all been housebound for the past couple of months, I find that this summer we’re going to see a lot of women either enhancing their “grownout look” and going longer or completely chopping it off once they can get into the salon. As for styling, noheat styling for me is always a big one in the summer. Braids or topknots are a great way to set the hair to create effortless texture minus the damage from a hot tool like a blow-dryer, curling iron, or flat iron. Tell us about the new Soleil collection. It provides sun protection for your hair. This range is essential for anyone who is spending any time outside this summer. Is there one product from the line that is your absolute must? Crème UV Sublime! Being a blonde, this is a must for me. I like to keep my lengths as light and bright as possible. During the summer months, my hair has a

tendency to go off tone easily—brassiness is definitely not my friend. Crème UV Sublime has become a staple in my daily haircare routine to protect against any sunrays and keep my color looking fresh. Any other tips for summer? Hats! They’re the best way to protect your scalp from the sun. Your scalp is just as delicate as your face; it’s important that you’re protecting it as well. What are you up to this summer? Getting outside! As New York City is slowly starting to open I’m looking forward to seeing my friends again. What’s next for Kérastase? For all my fellow blondes, later this summer in August, we’re launching an intense overnight recovery serum called Blond Absolu Serum Cicanuit specifically for blonde hair. It’s so easy to add it to your nighttime routine, and it actually repairs your hair while you sleep. It has hyaluronic acid and edelweiss flower, and leaves hair with 89 percent less breakage and makes it 74 percent smoother.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY

What do you think of when people say “summer hair”? Effortless! This summer I’m all about hair being easy, fun, and enhancing what you have. And what are the top concerns for hair this season? Sun damage would definitely be at the top of the list. I find the biggest mistake women make is not protecting their hair all summer long, and that means not just when you’re on holiday. Just like we incorporate sunscreen into our daily skincare routine, we need to be adding sun protection into our daily haircare routine. Chlorine, of course, would be a close second. Any of my blondes out there, stay far away from it if you can. And if it’s a must, at least make sure you’re using the right hair protection! I’ve seen my fair share of a green hue coming back to me in the fall, and it’s definitely not easy to get out and not the best for the overall condition of your hair. Are there any major missteps we should avoid when coming up with a summer look? Don’t overthink it! Summer is all about being a little

It’s no wonder Bridgehampton boutique Blue One has a legion of devoted customers. The owners, CRYSTAL and JARRET WILLIS, have created a lifestyle brand and are bonafide chicsters themselves. The couple tell THE DAILY SUMMER how they kept things going during the lockdown, what brands you should be looking out for, and how they’re making it easier than ever to get one-on-one service this summer.

FAMILY TIES Jarret and Crystal Willis with their 10-month-old son, Jacobi Blue.

By EDDIE ROCHE Photography by KAITLYN FERRIS

The good old-fashioned way! Jarret: Remember when things used to be like that? Crystal: It’s not like that anymore! Let’s talk about shopblueone.com. It looks like you’re selling a lot online. Jarret: It has been our only revenue. Crystal: The sales have tripled during COVID-19. Our clients who shop with us go on our Instagram and see what we’re wearing and reach out to us personally. At the time, they couldn’t go into the store, so they had to shop with us online. We were seeing a big influx. Thank God! It wasn’t our biggest mainstream of business. It was really people wanting to come into the store and shop with us to get that personal touch. Thank goodness we had been working on our website and put up a lot of product. We were doing drop-offs immediately. Online has been forcing people to find us. We’re getting sales from all over the country. How did you get through these past few months? Jarret: We opened in 2007 and shortly after, the world fell apart. Our mentality, the thing that we found out pretty early, we don’t look around, we look forward. Closing was never an option. We understand a lot of people have lost their businesses. We get that and feel terrible. We’re so hyper motivated to succeed. It wasn’t an option. Crystal: We didn’t sit back. You see people who just closed up. We were like, “No way!” We reached out to our clients individually. We let them know we were thinking of them and we were here if they needed anything. We have a good following. Jarret: We have great relationships. It was touching to see the people who we cater to wanted us to succeed. What brands do you carry in Blue One? Jarret: With men’s, we do really well with a German brand, Closed. We do well with a lot of our Italian and French designers, such as Mason’s, our bathing suits

ALL IMAGES COURTESY

What was the concept when you first opened? Crystal Willis: We started in 2007. I can’t believe how time flies. That’s insane! We wanted to do a men’s and women’s boutique. At that point, there weren’t really many men’s and women’s boutiques here. We weren’t married yet, but we were getting engaged. It was just the two of us, and we wanted to create a lifestyle thing where people could not only shop, which is great, but we could also give them advice on where to go, what to do, where to eat in the Hamptons. I grew up here, and Jarret had been coming to visit me for a while. We wanted a boutique where you could not just shop, but it was a lifestyle boutique. We wanted people to feel comfortable to come in. Jarret Willis: It evolved, month by month and year by year. It almost feels that especially with our Bridgehampton location that people are coming into our home! They are super comfortable. We don’t just talk fashion, we talk everything. We try to avoid politics! We get to know the way people live. That helps us do our job better. Why did you decide to make this a year-round business? Jarret: I’m also in real estate, and the reason we choose to be open year-round is because when people invest a certain amount of money in their homes, we found they use them year-round. Except February! February is awful, except for St. Barth’s. People are here, and they want to get out of the city to use their homes. We figure, “Why not be open?” It’s not like we get a break on the rent in the winter. We’re here! Why is it called Blue One? Crystal: It’s my middle name and now our son’s middle name. He’s Jacobi Blue. I’m Crystal Blue. How did you two first meet? Crystal: I was a junior in college. I played volleyball upstate, and he was visiting his parents. We met at a bar!

from Hartford do really well. Onia is fabulous. We partner with them on men’s and women’s. We’re fans of the owners. We love them. They’ve supported us. Because we’ve been in the business so long, we had to figure out a way to work together with the designers during COVID-19, so they could survive and we could survive. We really strengthened those relationships. Crystal: It’s probably going to be the way it goes. Things are going to change. I don’t know if it’s just going to be us writing orders. It’s going to be us forming partnerships together to help each other. As for women’s brands, we have Ulla Johnson, who does really well. We have a line from Paris called Rose Carmine. It’s gorgeous. We work with a lot of small and independent designers. That’s kind of how we started the business. We didn’t carry what the department stores were carrying. It was hard at first, but now we can bring in small independent designers and people don’t question it. They know if we’ve curated it, it’s good. Any new designers on the shelves this summer that you’re excited about? Jarret: A brand from Italy called Nº21. I hope they ship! Crystal: All the factories have shut down, so we didn’t get in even half of our product that we had ordered. How is the curbside business working? Jarret: What we’re doing is setting up appointments with people. We’ll shut down the store and give people an hour or half-hour time slots. That’s safer. We get to give every appointment our full attention. That’s been beneficial and maybe a way we work going forward. Crystal: We also have a big front lawn that we’re going to start using more. If people don’t feel comfortable coming into the store, they can always shop outside. We can also bring product outside to people. What are you doing to make your customers feel safe while shopping inside? Jarret: I was COVID mentality prior to COVID! Everyone must wear a mask, there’s hand sanitizer everywhere, we wear gloves when clients are in the store. We have gloves for people to take. I encourage it. I love it. We’re super clean! Crystal: If people try on something, we steam every piece before we put it back out on the floor. We noticed you’re also selling masks. Jarret: We designed them right away. We had them made here. They’ve been great. They’re comfortable and come with N95 filters. Crystal: They’re machine-washable, which is nice. A lot of the masks are uncomfortable or hard to breath in. These are not. Jarret, we hear you were a model back in the day. Crystal: He modeled for Ford. Jarret: I did Armani. I walked shows and then I got into acting. I was on One Life to Live as Dr. Jordan Kingsley. [Laughs] So ridiculous. And you said you work in real estate, too. Jarret: I’m working with Bespoke Real Estate, which was founded by our friends Cody and Zach Vichinsky. We’re in Water Mill and focus on $10 million and above properties. I’ve been doing it for five years. Crystal: You can buy clothing and a house! Do you want to open more stores? Jarret: No. We’re going to go more into design. We’ve sprinkled in a little bit of our design. We’re going to explore that more. Crystal: We’re also loving the collaborations. We collaborated with an L.A. brand Kinetix on the softest tie-dye hoodies for men and women, and with Jen Hansen Jewelry on a special piece.

DESIGNER

COMFORTS Everyone from décor impresarios like Ryan Korban and Ashley Stark Kenner to fashion fixtures Brian Atwood and Carly Cushnie to Hamptons regulars Margaret and Geoffrey Zakarian has fallen for Kassatex. Quickly garnering a fierce following amongst the hautest nesters, the company is showing no signs of slowing , even during these difficult months. THE DAILY SUMMER checked in with ALEXANDRA FRITZ KHOUDARI to get the scoop on what’s next for the East End’s most wanted interior brand. You've been around for more than 20 years now. Tell us how Kassatex came about. My husband, Ernesto Khoudari, started Kassatex in 1999 after managing his family’s South American mills and working with textile manufacturers all over the world. He started with one bath towel and grew his company from there. Where do you find your summer inspirations? I am currently getting so much inspiration from Ed Hollander’s gardens and cooking meals I would enjoy in a restaurant at home. It’s all about the backyard dinner parties this summer. Last summer, we created a summer capsule collection with Veronica Beard inspired by Goldie Hawn in the movie Overboard. And over the holidays, we created an essential travel set with hunting season and most recently, a Mother’s Day collection with Peloton. This holiday season, we’re creating a gorgeous capsule collection with world-

renowned interior designer Sara Gilbane. And a few more are in the works for 2021. Speaking of collabs, how do you find people to feature on your blog? We are always fans first. Our blog is produced by our director of strategic partnerships, Kelly Florio Kasouf, who also manages our collaborations and creates content that is focused on different readers, such as our Designer Dossier series, for those interested in the interior designers. We are inspired by our Between the Sheets series to satiate our love of voyeurism and see how others live with an in-bed Q&A, and of course our Explore pieces, where we ask notables like [Grecian jewelry designer] Ileana Makri or the Mikoh swimsuit designers Oleema and Kalani Miller [based in Hawaii] to give us their favorite locales for some insider experiences. You've got everything from robes to tabletop wares.

Do you plan to expand into anything else soon? We have lots of great projects in the works and don’t be surprised if you see Kassatex in every room at home within the next year! Not only do we create collections for hotels like 1 Hotels, Four Seasons, The Surrey, and Baccarat Hotel, but we have created a hotel bedding collection for those desiring a hotel experience at home. It caters to the consumer who owns a rental property and wants to re-create that high-end hospitality vibe. Does the brand look for sustainability when creating designs? Absolutely. As an ongoing pursuit to create green, sustainable products, we have partnered with OEKO-TEX and Made in Green certified mills around the world for the majority of our collections. OEKO-TEX looks at hazardous substances, such as heavy metals, toxic dyes, and carcinogens, making sure textiles are safe for the consumer and the environment. Our Made in Green products have also been tested against a list of more than 350 harmful substances, and were produced in a factory committed to sustainable, environmental, and social practices. How have you been coping during quarantine? Luckily the home category flourished during this time and gave us the opportunity to figure out what our consumer truly needs in life. A quick refresh of sheets to new bath mats, plush robes, and a full redesign with bath accessories, our collections are the ultimate in instant gratification when you need to add more comfort at home during this time. What are you looking forward to this summer? Finally walking on the beach with friends who I haven’t been able to see since quarantine, shopping in Amagansett, and no more virtual schooling! Any travel plans…if even possible? I don’t have travel plans because I’m expecting a baby and due in early August! Congrats! So we will be anticipating a baby line soon!

SHOT One of the great American success stories of late is SUZY BATIZ, who turned a simple idea into a multimillion-dollar business when she invented Poo-Pourri, a bathroom spray to make life a little sweeter after you know what. The success of the product has spawned an empire with her latest venture a sign of the times—hand sanitizer. She tells THE DAILY SUMMER how she got here and why her unconventional path is something she’d never flush away. By EDDIE ROCHE

You have an incredible professional background. Before Poo-Pourri, I don’t know that you’d call many of my ventures highlights! I was always fighting to survive, hustling and doing anything I thought I could make money at. Basically, I did what society told me to do instead of what I was passionate about. I had dozens of jobs and side hustles throughout my career, everything from working in retail to a tanning-bed repair business and an online recruitment platform that matched people and companies by culture first. You’ve been open about your professional failures. Any lessons learned? I don’t love the word failure. Sure, by societal standards I had plenty of failures in my life. Hello, two bankruptcies! I’ve found that I can always harvest something good from these experiences. Without a doubt, I wouldn’t be where I am today without each of these “failures,” and my biggest takeaway is that no matter what society or anyone else says or what the data shows, I will only do what lights me up and turns me on. I spent the first half of my life doing what I was “supposed” to do and it didn’t work. I lost everything twice and didn’t even have fun along the way. Now, I know I could lose it all at any time, so I make sure I’m having fun each and every day. How did you come up with the idea for Poo-Pourri? After my second bankruptcy I had sworn off business entirely. I was at a family dinner party where the topic of bathroom odor came up and someone at the table wondered out loud, “Can bathroom odor be trapped?” My whole body lit up. Essential oils had been my hobby for about 15 years at that point, and I envisioned oil floating on water and knew I could do that. Nobody thought it was a good idea and I never thought of it as a business, but the idea wouldn’t leave me alone. For nine months I researched, formulated, and tested

“I WAS AT A FAMILY DINNER PARTY WHERE THE TOPIC OF BATHROOM ODOR CAME UP AND SOMEONE AT THE TABLE WONDERED OUT LOUD, ‘CAN BATHROOM ODOR BE TRAPPED?’ MY WHOLE BODY LIT UP.” obsessively until I got the formula just right. How did you get it off the ground? I gave the winning formula to 10 friends, who loved it. My husband at the time built a simple website. Then I asked those same friends to share the product with 10 of their friends. From there, I got calls from gift shops and started my wholesale business, shortly after that I began showing at trade shows and the product grew organically by word of mouth for the first few years until our first viral video in 2013, “Girls Don’t Poop.” Tell us a little bit about some of the initial products and how you’ve expanded over the years. Poo-Pourri started off with one scent, Original Citrus, formulated to naturally fight bathroom odor. We’ve since added numerous scents to meet everyone’s bathroom needs. We have everything from a glitter collection and men’s scent to a cocktail line and now Shoe-Pourri, which fights odor-causing bacteria and stenches in shoes. We have a ton of product innovation coming in the second half of this year, so stay tuned! What are some of your most popular products? Some of our best-smellers include our Original Citrus, Lavender Vanilla, and Royal Flush. Original Citrus will always hold a special place in my heart as it’s the one that started it all, but all the innovation along the way has also been fun. I suppose I can’t really pick a favorite—it’d be like choosing a favorite child! You’ve done a great job marketing the brand. It’s so cheeky! At first, poo was such a taboo topic that I knew I had to use humor to bridge the gap. One of the things I’m most proud of is that, as a brand, we’ve opened up the conversation and people are now more openly talking about pooping. Now that we’ve done that, we can still maintain our sense of humor, but we’re able

to dig deeper and have more serious conversations with consumers through our marketing campaigns. For example, with our Giant Poo experiential tour [on hold during COVID-19, but still available online], we talk about toxic thoughts that are constipating our minds and holding us back, encouraging people to #letthat go! Is your life just full of puns now? I do have a pretty punny life, which I appreciate. It keeps me grounded and I sometimes think that after a s**tty first half of my life, it’s a cosmic joke that I’ve found success through s**t! However, you may be surprised to know that my largest focus in life is on personal growth and transformation. I’ve spent well over 10,000 hours learning, exploring, and expanding, and my true passion is sharing those learnings with the world. So while my life is definitely packed with puns, there’s a more serious introspective passion in my life. You can find out more about this passion of mine by checking out suzybatiz.com. And now you’re launching hand sanitizer, too. As COVID-19 started to spread, we saw a dire need for hand sanitizer and we wanted to do our part to help people and also help keep our business going. Like many businesses, we were deeply affected by the pandemic and needed to pivot quickly. We stood by our core values. The product is natural, meets FDA guidelines, and smells great. We only produce what’s great, and hand sanitizer is no exception. It’s the start of an antibacterial line that I’ve wanted to get into for quite some time. You’re an entrepreneur in the true definition of the word. Do you mentor other women and what’s your favorite piece of advice to female business owners? I’ve spent countless hours mentoring other female business owners and teaching them that they already

have everything inside of them to create any life they imagine. I’ve recently expanded this program to make it more widely accessible via my ALIVE OS course. Through my many hours of personal development exploration, I’ve realized that my business is always a reflection of what’s happening inside of me. When we shift our internal state, our businesses will reflect those changes and flourish. The course isn’t necessarily focused on business, yet many women and men in the course have seen their businesses soar as a result of the work we do together. I read you don’t have any intention of selling the brand anytime soon. Why is that? I’m still having fun! My team knows that on the day I stop having fun, I will set a plan for the future, but for now, I couldn’t imagine life any other way. Tell us a little bit about your latest project, Supernatural. It first launched with goop in 2018 and sold out in two hours! It started as plant- and mineral-based home-cleaning concentrates with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry but is quickly expanding into a good-for-the-earth lifestyle brand. What else would you still like to do? I couldn’t have imagined having the life that I do now, so who knows what the next stage of my life will bring! What I do know is that I would like to continue to help people transform their lives through growth and healing. How will you be spending July 4th weekend this year? My plans are still up in the air, but my hope as we celebrate our country is that every person exercises their right to vote and takes time to get educated on how our country has shortchanged black and indigenous people of color. It’s vital that we reflect on what we can all do to right those wrongs moving forward.

HAVE YO YOU U

MET CHRIS? One of the East End’s most successful and personable realtors is CHRISTOPHER COVERT, who recently moved to Compass, and is busier than ever as the Hamptons climb in popularity. He tells us what buyers are looking for this year and why this is the time to buy.

Congrats on your move to Compass. Why did you decide to make the switch? I was completely happy at the firm where I was prior, but we have been watching as traditional brokerage has been changing, and technology has become an indispensable asset in modern real estate. The current health crisis has only accelerated that evolution, and I feel that Compass is best positioned to pivot into these new realities, and will allow me to better serve my clients. As a Compass agent, I have access to the company’s industry-leading technology platform that allows me to work from anywhere and to market homes completely digitally, and in highly customizable ways through virtual open houses, live postcards, enhanced 3-D staging, and more. What has your job been like during quarantine? In many ways this has been a surreal experience, and

we in the Hamptons have never been busier. First with the unprecedented March through May rental market, and now a conversion to a buy market. I think the data will show these past four months to have been one of the most dynamic our market has ever seen. And we had to figure out how to do this on the fly to conform with the restrictions and protocols established by the state. How did you occupy yourself when you were stuck at home and couldn’t show properties? Running Covert Academy for the kids [as its] operations manager, tech/IT department, director of shipping and handling, and chief box breaker-downer. What can the real estate business learn from the lockdown? More than 500 engineers, who came from companies like Amazon and Google, work on the Compass tech platform, and they release updates on a regular

basis, placing me at the forefront of innovation to provide my clients with the best service. In the future, innovative digital solutions will continue to drive the evolution of real estate and the way agents manage their business. Tell us more about your personal and professional background. I spent more than 20 years working in film, TV, and music. Real estate is a second career, and a natural progression. I was born and raised in Manhattan, and spent much of my adult life back and forth from Tribeca to Malibu, and after getting married and having two beautiful daughters, we decided to make Bridgehampton our permanent home. What do you love about the area? We love the year-round community here, and the natural beauty. The beaches, vineyards, farms, and equestrian properties, historic homes and villages—all

“WE LOVE THE YEAR-ROUND COMMUNITY HERE, AND THE NATURAL BEAUTY. THE BEACHES, VINEYARDS, FARMS, AND EQUESTRIAN PROPERTIES, HISTORIC HOMES AND VILLAGES—ALL OF IT.” of it. And it’s close enough to the city that it’s not a total disconnect from that vibrance and energy. Every realtor brings something new to the table. What do you bring? When I joined Compass, I became a member of the luxury division, which is open to elite Compass agents and provides optimized marketing services, including tailored marketing and public relations, and national market reports. In addition, through the division, I network with some of the best agents across the country so that together we can redefine what it means to strategically market luxury homes. What are your tips for house hunting in the Hamptons? If you see something you like, don’t be shy. The market is in such a place that hesitancy will only result in disappointment. And I think that every buyer would be best served working with an agent to advocate on their behalf. There are so many subtleties in our market that need a trained eye. Don’t trust a “zestimate”; that word literally makes my skin crawl. What are buyers looking for this year? New or turnkey, and “want it, need it, have to have it now.” Whether for immediate occupancy, or something they can close on right after Labor Day. Homes that don’t need a lot of work—at least for the next year—nobody wants people in their home. And homes that allow for home offices, and remote learning—quiet rooms off and away from main living and entertaining spaces. I have also seen more interest in extra garage space for storing supplies, as well as large mudrooms and full baths close to an entrance for the ability to step into a decontamination shower without walking through the entire house. How do you think the market will be impacted by current times? Our current situation has caused a seismic shift in how buyers are approaching the market. The hesitancy and measured approach we saw for many quarters has been supplanted with an emotional buying pattern. These are no longer luxury items but necessities for people. Given the uncertainty we face regarding schools, travel, health and safety in offices, the feared “second wave” [of COVID-19]—those fortunate

enough to be able to afford to own a home on the East End as a getaway from the city are stepping up and buying. And these range from buyers who plan to use the home full-time and are leaving the city for good, to those who may plan on staying until there is a widely issued vaccine, or even just as an every-weekend and holiday getaway. Our rental market is depleted, and pricing was driven to astronomical rates, so buying is actually a more sound investment. Sellers are going to be concerned about safety when it comes to feeling comfortable entering their home during COVID-19. What advice do you have for them and for buyers looking? I strictly follow the guidelines set by the CDC and local and state authorities, and take additional precautions, such as prequalifying buyers ahead of showings, creating walkthrough strategies, providing masks and gloves, and disinfecting homes after every appointment. You have a show, “The Covert Report.” Tell us more about it. I have to admit, it’s been so busy that my reporting has been inconsistent at best, but I am trying to get back to it weekly. “The Covert Report” is basically a quick video overview of the past weeks’ activity in the Hamptons marketplace, with data points and analysis. I try to call out trends as I see them, and to provide pertinent info for both buyers and sellers considering entering the market. It’s definitely more data oriented than lifestyle fluff, and I post it on LinkedIn and my YouTube page. You’re savvy when it comes to marketing yourself. Why is it important for realtors to put themselves out there? Most business happens through referrals, though by no means all. Brand awareness is a key element of my business plan, and I spend a great amount of time networking with the industry’s leading agents to amplify my listing portfolio and to find the best homes for my clients. On a nonwork note, have you been surfing this year? I got to surf for a couple of weeks in St. Barth’s in February, then the world broke. Out of respect to our local first responders and health-care workers, I didn’t think being on the highway out to Montauk was the

14 Cove Road, Sag Harbor Sold at $4,000,000

right thing to do, and quite honestly, I have been so busy helping clients find their way here that surfing seemed a bit trivial in the big picture. That said, I am ready and need to get back in the water. What are you most looking forward to this summer? Some semblance of normalcy…or new normalcy. Supporting our local restaurants with outdoor dining, seeing friends, and more time with family. But this only works if everyone stays smart.

Douglas Elliman’s YORGOS TSIBIRIDIS has made a name for himself as one of the most successful realtors on the East End. He tells THE DAILY SUMMER why now is one of the best times ever to buy, gives us the intel on the properties we should be checking out, and assures us that his industry is doing everything it can to make sure you feel safe looking at properties during the pandemic.

What’s your professional background? I have an MBA from Columbia Business School, and worked in finance and strategy for several Fortune 500 companies. I also worked in real estate and hospitality development and traveled around the world. How did you end up in the Hamptons? I always used to vacation in Greece in the summer, but my wife has been coming out here since she was a child and we bought our first house in Bridgehampton about 15 years ago as a weekend home. We were living in the city at that time and moved back to Greece for a few years and when we came back to New York, we felt the Hamptons was the place we wanted to live and raise our family.

What do you love about the area? It’s such a beautiful place, the sun, the light, the ocean, the bay. It’s such a magical place, whether you’re driving through Old Montauk Highway in Montauk and looking at the ocean or biking through the endless farmland in Sagaponack. What’s unique about working with you? When working with buyers, I bring a 360-degree perspective. A purchase out here is a major financial decision, so they need to feel confident they are making the right move. I have a strong analytical background, so I tend to constantly analyze the local real estate market and compare it with real estate markets in other regions within the U.S. or globally.

THROUGH THE ENDLESS FARMLAND IN SAGAPONACK.”

I am a very hands-on person, and I get involved with all the details, from tax and accounting considerations to legal, building, and zoning, etc. When I represent a property for sale, I always use a fresh approach to showcase the property. I work closely with the creative team. I’m lucky that my wife, Alicia, who works with me, has 17 years of experience in advertising as a creative director and leads the marketing strategy and creative for every property we represent. What areas are the hottest in the Hamptons right now? Every area is pretty much hot right now! We have a strong market across all areas, from Westhampton to Montauk. The market is active in all price points. What are buyers asking for? There is a high demand for new construction and more turnkey properties. However, there are always good opportunities for houses that need more work. I always advise my customers to invest in the location and in unique properties. Waterfront properties have always been in demand and their value never goes down. The financial markets have been all over the place this year. They have been up and down several times this year! It’s been a roller coaster. Real estate is a real asset and even if markets soften, the volatility is much smaller than the stock market. In the end, it’s really a lifestyle choice for buyers, and our market has proven to be strong. It’s a good time to invest in a house out here. What are some of your properties you are excited about? 6 Noelles in East Hampton is spectacular. It’s seven bedrooms and a new construction house. No detail was spared! 40 Wireless in East Hampton is an architectural gem and an amazing property for an art collector. 64 Atlantic is an Amagansett farmhouse two blocks from the ocean with the most beautiful back yard and pool.

Are there any properties with really unique characteristics? Villa Galaxy is a property I represent in Mykonos, Greece. My wife and I first saw it 15 years ago, and we fell in love with place. We ended up having our wedding there and returning years later for our vacation. The owner asked me to represent it in the U.S. market. It’s a compound of three houses with a stunning pool area and lots of outdoor space in the Ftelia area of Mykonos. What kind of impact did the lockdown have on your job? Working from home while the kids are on Zoom calls with school has been a challenge. However, it has created a new perspective in life and formed a stronger bond with the family through all of this. When trying to reach our customers, we have to be a lot more creative in marketing the properties and find new ways through technology to showcase properties to our customers. It’s created a much higher workload. What safety measures are in place so buyers and sellers feel comfortable? For a while, until we got to Phase 2, we weren’t doing any showings. Currently when we do showings, we have to take all precautions, wearing a mask, gloves, and booties when entering a property. Social distancing is key; everyone’s safety is a priority. Will there still be open houses this summer? Some people started doing them in Phase 2. I don’t feel it’s the right move, and I won’t be doing them. It’s hard to control the flow of people in an open house, and I think customers would also feel safer in viewing a property in private appointments with all safety measures in place. What’s the best part about being in real estate in the Hamptons? Working in the most beautiful place on earth!

Take the time to be with your pet. Touch them with kindness and yes, talk to them. Learn how to massage them, too. It goes beyond petting! Plus, don’t spend all your time on the phone. The moments of genuine connection will go a long way.
