Jailbird chic! Riccardo Tisci had his mind on the men behind bars for his Spring 2016 show in Paris this season. The backdrop? Metal caging. The look? Catholic iconography, jumpsuits, pinstripes, and oversize jailer key pendants. The crowd? Packed with A-listers. Cool factor? It’s safe to say he has it on lockdown.

THOM

BROWNE

A Japanese teahouse surrounded by kimono-clad scarecrows? Mais oui! Leave it to Thom Browne to create slightly eerie but always sublime shows. There were all of Browne’s signature navy and gray suits at his Spring 2016 show in Paris, but this time they came in a collage of fabrics that formed traditional Japanese motifs. The show closed with a few male geishas, who opened their kimonos to release flocks of faux scarecrows. Browne knows how to put on a spectacle, but fortunately he also knows how to tailor menswear to a T.

JUST THE ESSENTIALS!

with Douglas Elliman’s Noble Black What’s your look? Style varies so much based on changing perspectives, but objectives are absolute: Mine is to endeavor to look polished, but not purposeful, and casual, though not dismissive. If I spend more than 10 minutes getting dressed, then the battle is already lost. Which summer essentials should be in every man’s closet? White jeans, well-fitted polos, suede driving moccasins, and something gingham or pleasantly patterned. Who’s your style icon? Cary Grant.

BOYS of SUMMER DINNER

With GQ’s Bobby Graham What’s your look? Classics with a twist. I’m not afraid to take risks—I’m aware of what’s currently happening in menswear. List your absolute summer essentials. Navy blazers, faded T-shirts and shorts, Álvaro González sandals, a hooded sweatshirt, J.Crew blue and white oxfords, brown loafers, two good swimsuits, white denim, and comfortable, worn-in chinos in khaki and navy. Who’s your style icon? Robert Redford, with a mix of Harrison Ford. Which summer look makes you cringe? Ribbon belts and sunburns.

The Daily Summer and Condé Nast Traveler publisher Bill Wackermann hosted an intimate dinner party at the Living Room restaurant at c/o The Maidstone. In attendance? The Hamptons’ most stylist gents! “Style comes from feeling comfortable in your own skin,” Wackermann said, “and from knowing what looks Instagram star Greg Tinari, good on you and then pushing The Daily’s Mark Tevis the boundaries.” Live music was and Scott Benaglio provided by Acute Inflections’ Elasea Douglas and Sadiki Pierre, with drinks courtesy of Cointreau, Peroni, Rioja Wines, and Evian. Guests went home with treats from Moroccanoil, Boots Cosmetics, SHAN Swimwear, and Serena & Lily, but not before celebrating The Daily’s Eddie Roche with Acute the day’s momentous SCOTUS Inflections, Mark Tevis, and Corcoran’s ruling on gay marriage with a Jack Pearson vanilla rainbow-colored cake. A supreme day, indeed.

COURTSIDE CHATTER!

With Ana Ivanovic What’s your fashion statement on the court? How you come across on court draws people in. I like wearing dresses and switching my looks throughout the season. When you look good, you feel good, and ultimately play better. I’m

known for my aggressive style of tennis, but I like to think of myself as a feminine player. Tennis is one of those sports where female athletes can look groomed and elegant, yet sporty. Any beauty tips? My new beauty secret is Shiseido’s WetForce sun care range, which works even better when in contact with water or perspiration. I spend a lot of the time on the plane, traveling from one tournament to another, and I play tennis in extreme weather conditions. On the court, I’m often exposed to sun for hours, hence the importance of a great sun-care product. You’re now an ambassador for Shiseido. It’s a wonderful brand that I’ve known all my life, so it was an honor to be asked to partner with them. They stand for innovation and sophistication, two qualities that I aspire to. Which magazines do you dig besides The Daily Summer? Vanity Fair and Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar is my beauty and style bible. I’m interested in fitness, nutrition, and wellness, so I always enjoy reading Self. Any chance we’ll see you in the Hamptons this season? I may be able to stop by for a long weekend after the U.S. Open in September. My agent has invited me to stay over many times, and I may finally take

his offer!

TOTAL COVER-UP! With Josie Natori

What kinds of cover-ups are you loving most this season? Bohemian-style caftans and kimonos in bright colors with fringe and movement. They feel

young and fun! How do you accessorize beach attire? Statement jewelry! Our acacia wood ear-

Our beaded raffia tote is also very light, and is a chic alternative to a traditional beach bag. What’s your secret for segueing from beach to supper? A caftan dress and statement accessories. What styles of swimsuits do you gravitate to? Definitely two-pieces. They’re more comfortable, and you get sun everywhere! Are you more of a beach or a pool person? I prefer the beach. MONTAUK MOOD! With Lazy Point’s manager, Jason LaGarenne

This summer, hip Soho lounge Lazy Point will be out East at Ciao by the Beach in Montauk on Saturdays. How did the East End inspire your Soho spot? I grew up in Lazy Point, which is a little-known area of Napeague; it’s the area between Montauk and Amagansett. It has this authentic, rustic, coastal vibe. There’s nothing contrived about it. Many residents still make their living from the sea, and experiencing the natural beauty of the place makes you forget you’re only a couple of hours away from New York City. What kind of vibe were you going for with your NYC outpost? I just got tired of the speakeasy aesthetic, and self-serious places that sucked the fun right out of nightlife and cocktail culture. Many of these bars were dark and hyper-masculine, and we wanted Lazy Point to be the polar opposite: bright, colorful, fun, great music, approachable drinks, friendly staff, and authenticity. What’s your favorite cocktail? Definitely “Beets by Dre,” with Fords Gin, fresh beet juice, rosemary-infused syrup, and fresh lime. HEALTH KICK! With Nicole Miller

Our resident foodie filled us in on her more virtuous eating habits. Just don’t expect to catch her on a cleanse… Favorite superhealthy food: My sister’s granola, BOLA Granola, which I eat with Ronnybrook Maple Yogurt. Juice cleanses—discuss! Not my thing. Going vegetarian: I did once for several months and my face broke out badly. I kept being told that toxins were coming out… Anyway, after three months I gave up and my skin cleared! I’ll never deprive myself of… Olive oil. Recoup strategy after a gluttonous weekend: Doing a mini Atkins diet for two to three days. No carbs! Go-to fast-food nosh: A Chick-fil-A

biscuit for breakfast. Weirdest dieting experience: All diets are bizarre and make you crave things afterward. I went on a 10-day brown rice diet once—that was really boring! Healthy-ish Hamptons resto: You can always get great fish at Almond in Bridgehampton, like grilled swordfish with wheat berries. Virtuous dish to cook: My Vietnamese summer rolls are always a great, healthy appetizer. I also love making beet salad in the summer with pistachios and goat cheese.

GONE FISHIN’!

With chef Geoffrey Zakarian What’s your food obsession of the season? I don’t really obsess—life is too short—but I could eat local

What’s on your grill this summer? White fish, lightly stuffed and tied with lemon and fresh herbs, and served with a caper shallot vinaigrette made with Forum Chardonnay vinegar. What’s your favorite healthy(ish) food? Grilled fish, of course! How do you detox? I just ingest a moderate stream of naughty things daily…you know, moderation! What’s your fave Hamptons resto these days? I like Pierre’s. It’s always dependable, and

with an added steak house feel, and completed with a bounty of vegetables from local farms. What were you doing before this gig? I spent the past five-and-a-half years as the chef de cuisine at Vine Street Café on Shelter Island. How are you shaking up the Sag Harbor scene? I’d like to add an approachable dining experience with beautiful views where people can enjoy delicious modern regional dishes made with quality ingredients. What’s the one dish we absolutely must try? The duck breast. It’s a classic Long Island dish that’s tasty and succulent, accompanied with a

pilaf quinoa and cherries. What’s your 7-Eleven guilty pleasure purchase?

Cheez-Its!

LA DOLCE VITA!

With chef Marc Murphy Which fattening dish are you unable to resist? I’ll never say no to spaghetti alla carbonara. Which ingredient are you loving this summer? Anchovies! I was just on the Amalfi Coast in Italy with my family, and it seemed we were on an anchovy-themed trip. What’s your favorite healthy food? Eggs. They’re so good for you and so versatile. FOAM PARTY!

With Joyce Chang, Self’s editor in chief What’s your latfitness obsession? Using the foam roller for fascia work. Anyone who works out a lot could really benefit from it. By softening the fasciae, the fibers that encase your muscles, you walk, stand, and breathe differently. I started doing it before I did my first 15K race this spring, and not only did it make a difference in my running—it stretched me out so much

that I was an inch taller and narrower! Any trainers you’re loving? Kayla Itsines is the newest superstar.

Her Instagram following equals the population of a small country, and the body transformations they post are amazing. Talk about abs! She did an exclusive program for us at Self that you can do anywhere, so I do it whenever I’m traveling or can’t get to the gym. Where do you shop for workout gear? I cannot stop shopping at Bandier online, in Southampton, and Flatiron in the city. Where do you work out in the Hamptons? I’m hopelessly devoted to Katia Pryce at DanceBody—she teaches out of DanceHampton in East Hampton. Time always flies in her class. I just previewed some of her summer dances, and it’s all ridiculously fun and sexy. I’ll also be spinning with Stacey [Griffith] at SoulCycle in Bridgehampton or at Flywheel in Sag Harbor. My favorite summer treat is going to Norma Jean Pilates in Sag Harbor. Hayley Thorpe, the owner, is one of the best Pilates instructors I’ve worked with. How can we get awesome abs? Summer abs call for a 360 strategy! Katia Pryce does the most innovative abs series I’ve ever done. Cardio is also important, and eating clean has the biggest abs impact. The recipes from The Ranch at Live Oak Cookbook are amazing. My abs are always best when I leave The Ranch in Malibu! Lastly—a foam roller can help carve a waist. I’m not kidding!

APP ATTACK!

With Yaye’s co-founders, Paul Yau and Mike Salvaris What’s Yaye’s concept? Paul Yau: Like many New Yorkers, we don’t live near family and staying connected is important. Fitbit and other apps are fine, but they rely on selfmotivation, diligence, and the ability not to get bored logging in workouts or calories. We thought there had to be a way to stay connected with family and friends and do it around health. Having fun getting healthy is something that is lacking in what’s out there right now. So how does it work? Mike Salvaris: Download the app and invite your friends to join a private group. Set up a health goal, which could be working out five times a week or eating organically or just more steps per day. Prove it! You have to upload a photo to prove the workout or your juice cleanse or your meal. Let Yaye motivate you along the way, tell you how you’re doing.

TOTAL KNOCKOUT!

With Joan Smalls Got any workout tips for us? Find a workout that you find fun! If it feels too grueling and you don’t want to get out of bed to go to the gym, then that’s not the workout for you. So what’s the most fun sweat sesh for you? I took up kickboxing because I’d always wanted to learn how to do it. Has it made you more aggressive? No, it calms me down! I picked it up when I was in college in Puerto Rico, because

I had a lot of pent-up anger and emotion. I needed a release and an escape. What’s your summer fitness routine like? I try to keep the same consistency of workouts, so I don’t feel pressured to work out more in the summer. All I want to do

MAKING WAVES!

With CityRow’s director of programming, Annie Mulgrew What makes rowing such a killer workout?

Every single stroke on the rowing machine works about 84 percent of the body’s muscles when properly executed. The stroke is about 60 percent legs, 25 percent core, and 15 percent arms—roughly proportionate to the size of those muscles in your body. It is a true—and truly effective— total body workout. It’s also low-impact, which means that you get a killer burn without damaging your joints. We also do sculpting intervals, so you get the perfect balance of cardio and strength-training. Do you ever go rowing in the water?

Find me eight people ready to row at 5 a.m. when the water is calm on Three Mile Harbor, and I’ll be their coxswain. How are you as a swimmer? My go-to stroke is floating on a pool noodle. I can swim to save my life…or to grab my drink at the other end of the pool. Saturdays in August at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Montauk Beach House, 55 S. Elmwood Ave., Montauk

BARRE TIDBITS!

With Elements Fitness founder Andrea Fornarola Hunsberger What’s new? We added additional Dance Cardio Sculpt classes. We use amazing booty bands that amp up the intensity of our favorite exercises. We’ve also added a retail boutique with upscale active and athleisure wear, including custom pieces by Vie Activewear, Vimmia, Koral, Prismsport, Sondra Roberts, and more. What’s your favorite kind of workout? Exercises from our signature barre class. As a professional dancer, it’s the way my body likes to move. And dance cardio is my cardio activity of choice. Thoughts on myriad boutique fitness studios opening out East? I opened Elements as an alternative for clients and instructors from these types of studios. These larger studios are numbersdriven and lack the one-on-one connection that makes boutique fitness unique and special. 66 Newtown Ln., Ste. 11, East Hampton B FA N YC . Q Management How’s your tennis? On a scale of 1–10, I’m a 7. I played a lot of sports when I was younger, like tennis, football, soccer, and ice hockey. You’re from Germany. Is there a German version of the Hamptons? My hometown isn’t far from the ocean. There’s a part of the town that’s more chic— sometimes you get invited to house parties, and you have to dress up. I went to an allwhite party when I was 18. Did you spill anything? I didn’t. I had to be sober the whole time because I was having some issues with my ex-girlfriend. Do you wear a lot of white? I like it. White’s the new thing.

Where are we most likely to find you in the summer? I like to be on the beach as much as possible. Any sunscreen preferences? Kiehl’s. I have very sensitive skin and the products are made for me. When you get to set you don’t know anybody, but when you leave, you leave with a feeling that you’ve exchanged something with everyone. I love my job. I really do!

ultimate

beauty How do the loveliest faces in the world stay looking their best? Answers ahead! BY EDDIE ROCHE

constance jablonskI Agency: DNA Models. Morning routing: After I wake up, I usually check my phone in bed for a few minutes, then I have a nice cup of coffee with breakfast while answering e-mails from Europe. Finally, I shower and get ready before jumping into my day. Beauty mantra: Real beauty shines from within—it comes from being happy with yourself. Do something every day that your future self will thank you for, and take care of your health! Workout: I love cardio! I need to sweat when I work out, and I like to mix it up with running, boxing, jumping rope, tennis, and Pilates. Go-to products: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, Estée Lauder DayWear Hydrationist, Hamadi Organics Shea Hair Cream, Klorane shampoo, and Christophe Robin fig hair mask. Superfoods: I love fish and meat, quinoa, lentils, vegetables, fresh fruits, and chocolate! Drink of choice: A very dry and very cold glass of rosé from Provence. Fragrance: Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess. Sunscreen: John Masters Organics sunscreen with SPF 50. Nail polish: A deep, rich red in the winter, and a coral in the summer, both from Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer. Favorite indulgences: Business-class flights, always, because I spend my life in the air and

sometimes I go straight to a shoot from landing, so it’s a necessity. I also love good food—I honestly never look at prices when I go to a restaurant. I could eat at the most fancy sushi place every day! Sleep requirements: My perfect night is eight hours. Hair-care routine: It’s pretty basic—I don’t shampoo and condition every day, but I do use a leave in-conditioner. It’s a light way to deep condition my hair. Other than that, if I’m on set, the stylists will offer to trim split-ends and they always suggest a fab new product—and they’re rarely wrong. Beach habits: I love the beach, and when I go, I spend at least two hours there. I can’t get enough of the sound of the waves and the feel of the sun on my skin and the sand between my toes. It’s an instant Zen moment. But I always protect myself by applying SPF 50 every two hours. Detox routine: I don’t really detox. I’m pretty consistent with eating healthy and exercise, so detoxing for me is usually limited to going a few weeks without alcohol or caffeine. Beauty inspiration: My parents. My dad has this incredible gift of always being happy. He sees beauty in everyone. My mum taught me that less is more and that confidence is the most important thing.

taylor hill Agency: IMG Models. Morning routine: I wake up, brush my teeth, wash my face, and occasionally shower in the morning, but I usually shower at night. Then I make a cup of coffee and get my thoughts together about what I need to do that day. Beauty advice: Less is more. Makeup and beauty products are, in my opinion, meant to enhance your natural beauty, not cover it up! Workout: I do a mix of Crossfit and yoga. I like the high intensity of Crossfit, and I like to stretch it all out and keep it calm with yoga. Go-to products: BB creams. For skin care, I use coconut oil on my body and face. I wash my face with CeraVe cleanser. For shampoos, I like to switch it up pretty frequently. I don’t like to use the same shampoo and conditioner, because I feel like my hair gets used to it and it can make my skin break out. Superfoods: I like to eat anything green. Kale, salads, vegetables; I also love carrots, and I eat a lot of chicken and fish. Drink of choice: Water! It’s super important to drink lots and lots of water throughout the day because it helps with everything, like keeping your energy up and maintaining overall health. Fragrance: My favorite smell is lavender, so I’ll use anything with that scent. Sunscreen: I like sports sunscreen because it stays on longer and is sweat-and water-resistant. Toothpaste: I don’t use a specific type of toothpaste, but whatever I buy is always a whitening toothpaste, and I use Listerine mouthwash along with it. Nail polish: Either a light pink that is slightly clear or a good beige or nude color from either OPI or Revlon. Favorite indulgences: A nice vacation or a really relaxing spa day. Body work: I like to get an adjustment from a chiropractor and do holistic healing. It’s a good way to feel physically healthy. Beauty rule… Positivity! The happier and more positive you are, the more attractive you are. Never wear a frown. Sleep requirements: I try to get anywhere from eight to 10 hours of sleep—12 if I’m lucky! Hair care: Because I get my hair done every day with heated tools for my job, I like to do deep-conditioning treatments with coconut oil. All that heat can make my hair really dry, so the oil helps keep it moisturized and healthy. Beach habits: I usually stay at the beach anywhere from one to three hours, and I wear a lot of sunscreen. Beauty is... Being happy.

Drink of choice: Water and peppermint tea. Fragrance: Nina by Nina Ricci. Sunscreen: Always SPF 50. Beauty rule: Less is more. Wake-up call: Between 7 and 9 a.m. Sleep requirements: Between seven and eight hours. Hair care: I always use purple shampoo, and instead of conditioner, I use Wella S/P Damage Repair Hair Mask. Beach habits: I’m not the biggest fan of sun baking, so I always wear SPF 50 or 70 sunscreen, a light shirt, and a hat. Detox routine: A two-three day juice detox always works magic. When I do get them, I’m reminded how great they are, so I’ll have them three days in a row. Beauty rule: A smile is the most beautiful thing you can wear. Wake-up call: I wish I could say 7 every day, but with work and traveling between different time zones, it’s anywhere from 4 a.m. and 1 p.m. Beach habits: My favorite thing to do is go later in the day and fall asleep under an umbrella covered with a scarf. I’m not a fan of the direct sun, but I love the late afternoon sun. When most people have left, I’ll go and put some tunes on and doze off. If everyone wants to go earlier, I’ll be swimming in the water! Beauty is... On the inside! Beauty gurus: The amazing, incredible makeup artists I’ve been so fortunate to work with. But also the men I’ve had in my life, as well as my friends, who remind me every day that beauty has nothing to do with love. Go-to products: Redken shampoo and conditioner, invisible hair oil by Bumble and bumble, Weleda Skin Food, shea butter from L’Occitane, and sunscreen by Piz Buin. Superfoods: Lately, I’ve become addicted to Health Warrior chia bars. For breakfast, I replaced granola with Greenola, which is made with kale. ANNA KAISER, AKT

Mantra: Have faith in your workout again. There are so many options in fitness today, and I want to take the guesswork out of the equation. How much cardio do I need? How much strength? How often? Each session offers everything you need to get a complete workout that’s fun and gets results. Personal routine: I work out at the AKT InMotion Studios in either East Hampton or New York five to six days per week, as well as eating clean and getting outside to enjoy the weather as much as humanly possible! For a banging beach body… Every body is beautiful. Fitness is about feeling strong and confident in your own skin, not in comparison to anyone else. Vacation musts: I love heading to Ditch Plains with friends in Montauk, hitting Navy Beach for sunset, biking to Gosman’s, having snacks at Mary’s Marvelous, getting a massage or facial at A.Studio Day Spa. And soaking in the sun on Georgica Beach! Hamptons haunts: Moby’s, The Swallow, Hideaway, Sen, Scoop, Crow’s Nest, and Surf Lodge.

JOEY GONZALEZ, BARRY’S BOOTCAMP

HOLLY HENDRICKS, PHYSIQUE 57

Fitness philosophy: Do what you love. Truly, if you find a workout that is fun, feels great on your body, and of course, gives you results, you will stick with it! Mantra: Work hard; play hard (sort of). Now that I’m a mom, that saying has a whole different meaning. I try to keep things balanced—an awesome workout in the morning and a delicious dinner al fresco in the early evening with my baby and hubby is my idea of a perfect day, including a glass of crisp rosé, of course. Personal routine: Physique 57 classes at least four or five times per week. I also love running, so I’m training for the New York City Marathon. For a banging beach body… It takes consistency! We tell our clients—and we’ve done studies to prove it!—that four classes per week is what they should do to really see and feel the change. In as few as eight Physique 57 classes, they will begin to see noticeable results. Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated, especially during the summer, play a big role as well. Vacation musts: Relaxing on the beach and visiting all the fantastic restaurants. I love finding ones with outdoor seating, especially if there is a beach view. Also, strolling around Sag Harbor and Montauk with my family is always relaxing and rejuvenating. Hamptons haunts: I love Sag Harbor. My husband and I always make a stop at Dock House for lobster rolls, and then wander over to BuddhaBerry for dessert. We also love going to Wolffer Estates for their Summer in a Bottle rosé and taking in the gorgeous views of the vineyards.

Fitness philosophy: Never neglect the core staples—the fitness trifecta of strength training, cardiovascular, and flexibility. Mantra: Lift. Run. Stretch. Repeat. Personal routine: By summertime, I’m typically in shred mode and try and do a Barry’s class every day. Also, the goal is to eat a clean diet, rich with protein, fresh fruits and vegetables and absent of processed grains and sugar. For a banging beach body… Age and genetics are big factors, but on average, one month is enough time to bring your body to a noticeably better level. Major truth: Personally, as more time goes by, it gets more challenging for me. Nobody has ever passed out, but they’ve definitely given up. Hamptons musts: There has been such a shift in the lifestyle here: People use to see and be seen at restaurants and bars, and now fitness is the epicenter of socialization. My perfect day consists of a Barry’s workout, a light meal, a walk to the beach with my dog, and an evening with rosé, friends, and laughter. Go-to spots: The Amagansett Lanes is one of my favorite neighborhoods—one of the only spots walking distance to both a beautiful beach and a quaint town (which happens to have a Barry’s). Moby’s is a great spot for both families and the single life. And Breadzilla is always a fun cheatday delight.

ALYCEA UNGARO, REAL PILATES

Fitness philosophy: I tell all my clients to do two workouts a week that they “need” to do, and one that they just “love” to do. What your body needs is often different from what you love, but reminding your body what you love to do will keep you on track with the workouts you need to do. Mantra: Do real exercise to support your real life. Personal routine: I walk everywhere. I do daily seven-minute Pilates routines. Sometimes, I cheat on Pilates with Ashtanga yoga. For a banging beach body… Consistency is the only way. Eat clean and only when you should eat, rather than when you “want” to. Work out daily with resistance training. Sleep well. Do this for 30 days, and see the difference. Nickname: I have been called “Mistress of Pain.” Not sure how I feel about that! Hamptons traditions: I grill at my family’s house in Sag Harbor and paddleboard on the Peconic Bay with my kids. We get ice cream in Bridgehampton at the Candy Kitchen and green juice at the Juicy Naam.

STEPHEN CHEUK, S10

Fitness philosophy: S10 is a combination of periodized strength and conditioning training, along with nutrition geared toward fat loss and optimal health. Mantra: Fear inhibits life. Life is short—just go for it. Personal routine: I try to work out every day. Each week, I strength train four times, do two days of conditioning, and on my rest day, I work on mobility and hit the Russian baths. For a banging beach body… It takes discipline, hard work, and a good training program and meal plan. Prepping all your own meals goes a long way! Generally, after eight to 12 weeks of a well-structured training program and diet, you will have a banging body. Hamptons haunts: The Surf Lodge, where we run the beach boot camps, the spa at Gurney’s, and the Crow’s Nest. Up next: We’re doing a pop-up boot camp with the Line hotel in L.A., and launching an S10 activewear line. We’re also starting a matcha tea café in Australia! b fa n yc . c o m ; a l l ot h e r s c o u r t e s y

Life In

Prism As the founders of the wildly successful activewear brand PRISMSPORT, Lori Florio and Emily Vitale are proof that it’s never too late to start a third chapter. The longtime friends explain their reinvention of sportswear. BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO

How did you meet? Emily Vitale: We formed the first sorority at Dartmouth, and we lived across the compound from each other. There weren’t a lot of women there, so we all knew one another. How did you keep in touch? Emily: In the ’80s, Lori was selling advertising, and I was buying it, so that kept us in touch. It turns out she and her husband, Tom [Florio], had a house on Fire Island, and they invited me to visit. Then I met my husband through them! Lori Florio: We shared a love of sports: Emily had been on a tennis team, and she invited me to join it. We ended up being doubles partners who would play around with different business ideas. What were your first careers? Lori: I started at New York magazine right out of college as a salesperson. I got my MBA while I was still working there, and then I went to Seventeen before moving to New Woman, where I became publisher. I stopped working after my second child was born, because I felt like I was missing out on too much. Emily: I started at Lord & Taylor in the training program. I came to New York thinking that fashion was what I wanted to do and moved to Ellesse [an Italian sports apparel brand]. It wasn’t my dream job, but it was my dream company, and I got involved in the advertising and PR there. I stayed there for five years and became the head of advertising and PR. Then I went off to start my own business in comedy promotions. Comedy? Emily: I had gone to see Jerry Seinfeld before he was anybody, and met his agent. He wanted to add a comedy promotions department, so I did that for a year. I didn’t want to pitch new business, and I realized it was time to stay home with my kids. What inspired the launch of your own company? Lori: The whole idea is that you don’t have to make just one choice. It wasn’t tough quitting my job, and people were shocked because I had a pretty major career, but I feel like I just achieved a lot early. I kept thinking, “What’s the next step? I don’t want to be a lady who lunches.” I love the idea that you can morph, change, and adapt. One of my daughters gave me a card, and in it, she wrote, “Thank you for inspiring me to see that Spring 2015 Collection you don’t have to choose one path and that you can reinvent yourself and evolve.”

Eventually, we want to open stores in New York and Los Angeles. We’d like to be the cool, fashionable expressive brand within fitness.”

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Florio and Vitale at their East Hampton location

Why did you decide on fitness fashion? Lori: Emily is a sewer, and at the time, she was making skirts for our tennis team. They were funky and beautiful, and I kept telling her that she should make a business out of it. Concurrently, I had been collecting funky fitness pieces for years, since I’m a yogi and runner. We framed out the concept together. When we came up with the idea to do a print-driven line of fitness clothing, there wasn’t a printed garment in that market. We were tired of wearing black to the gym. It was boring! Why not take the same energy and creativity that you use in your ready-towear wardrobe and apply it to fitness? How do you source your prints? Lori: We search thousands of open stock prints through a couple of resources, most of which are European. Every print has to pass the thigh test: Not only does it have to be on trend and sophisticated and inherently attractive, but it has to look good on a woman’s leg. How will you expand? Lori: Eventually, we want to open stores in New York and Los Angeles. We’d like to be the cool, fashionable expressive brand within fitness. Lori, you’ve been in Sag Harbor for 18 years. Where do you work out? Lori: I go to Yoga Shanti and One Ocean Yoga at Channing Daughter’s Winery. I paddleboard a lot, and I also go to Core Fusion or Physique 57 in Bridgehampton. I play tennis at East Hampton Tennis Club too. What’s your best advice for starting a new career chapter? Emily: It’s a lot harder than we thought. Anyone going into a business like this should not think of it as a hobby. Lori: Talk to as many people who have any type of peripheral relationship to the business as you can. This is so much harder than corporate situations. We’re emptying our own garbage, but we’re also creating something new. It’s been such an education. We look at each other and say, “Can you believe we did this?” It’s very gratifying.

Hair Happenings

Josh with Schilling, pre-event

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

As John Frieda’s international creative consultant, Harry Josh cuts, colors, and hangs with Taylor Schilling. Meet the chic set’s go-to guy for everything coif-related. BY SYDNEY SADICK

Harry, it’s been ages! What’s new? I’ve been working like a crazy person! This has truly been the busiest year I’ve had in more than 20 years of doing hair. It’s been kind of amazing and kind of exhausting all at the same time. In the past two years that I’ve created my own brand [Harry Josh Pro Tools] while continuing my role with John Frieda, the amount of demand and attention that it requires is like adding a whole other career into an existing one. It’s a really fascinating and exciting part of my life, and it’s been really cool to create something from the ground up. I couldn’t be happier with my workload. Style-wise, what are you best known for? Two extremes: highly polished, expensive-looking hair with red carpet finishes, and the exact opposite, which is bed-head/nothing/sexy rock ’n’ roll hair. How do you help women find their hair personality? A lot of dialogue with the client! It takes a lot of questions. I spend a good 20 minutes talking to women about their hair, what their life is like, how much time they’re willing to put into their hair, how they’re feeling about life, weight loss, weight gain, relationship status, you name it. These elements really do tell you a lot about the person in the chair. It’s never cut-and-dried. Love what you’re doing with Taylor Schilling. Taylor is amazing. She is the funniest person I’ve worked with, and we laugh so much that it’s hard to be on time. She’s fun, cool, and definitely not high maintenance. It’s just not her look. If she could roll out of bed and go to an event, she would. She only sits in the chair because I force her to. She’s not one of those glammy girls who are obsessed with being transformed every day. Taylor just wants to look natural and be done as quickly and effortlessly as possible. Are you an Orange Is the New Black fan? Obsessed! Capital O. I binge watch it the second it comes out. What other celebs have you been working with lately? Rose Byrne, Ellen Pompeo, Kate Bosworth, and supermodels like Behati Prinsloo, Lily Aldridge, Candice Swanepoel, Karlie Kloss, and Gigi Hadid. You were once a casting director. Which models are you loving these days? I’m really obsessed with the social media stars of today. It’s the Gigis, the Karlies…they’re setting a precedent for the next wave of supers. What’s new in your work with John Frieda? I’ve been their international creative consultant for going on eight or nine years. It’s been an incredible opportunity to work with a mega brand. I help curate the products they put out on the market. They want constant feedback, so it’s cool to be so involved with a global brand. It’s definitely sprung my interest in creating my own business. What new products are on the horizon for John Frieda? We brought back the Beach Blonde Sea Waves Sea Salt Spray, which was out in the late ’90s and early 2000s. They’ve reformulated it because all of us experts thought it was so incredible, and now it’s even better. We also have a product called 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment that I’m really loving. Girls with fine hair put it on before the shower and rinse it out. It’s a really innovative way to create volume from a shower perspective as opposed to just adding a topical product after the shower. What’s trending in the color department right now? The whole darker-root, lighter-end thing isn’t going anywhere. We’ll see places for that constantly. Low maintenance but high impact is always desirable. What are the coolest cuts for summer? We’re definitely seeing a return to shorter hair. We’ve had such a long-hair spell for so long! We’ve had so many people chopping off their hair in the past six

months, so I think we’ll continue to see this effortless, easy, loose-textured, above-the-shoulder cut throughout the summer. How about for fall? It’ll probably grow out a little bit longer and will be a lot less layered. Where do you look for hair inspiration? It happens everywhere, 24/7, nonstop. It can come from walking around the streets of the Lower East Side to seeing a skater who passes by. New York is the perfect place to see creativity come to life. I love seeing people with no budget come up with great looks. I live near Parsons School of Design, so I see all these college kids looking great. They have no money, yet they want to stand out and be creative. I find it really inspiring, and I take nuggets from them and convert them into something I think would work for a real woman. What’s your routine for staying fit and looking chic? I get up, have my coffee, do a 20-minute meditation, walk the dogs, and then go to the gym. When I work out, I alternate between weights and dance cardio. Once I do that, I know it’s going to be a good day. What other projects are you working on? Right now, another focus is on my Pro Tools line. I’m launching new items in the fall, so my emphasis is on getting them into the hands of beauty editors. My convertible two-in-one iron will be a world-first in hair care—it’s a professional curling iron that the pros use and can then be clicked off and turned into a wand for a consumer.

Taylor is amazing. She is the funniest person I’ve worked with, and we laugh so much that it’s hard to be on time.”

What is it about the cut, fit, and design of your swimwear that women love? The Eres swimsuit has it all—the brand was created in 1968 by a woman, and it has continued to be designed by women for women. The design does not follow trends but focuses on fit. Every summer, our goal is to beautify women. Everyone that tries on an ERES bathing suit is immediately convinced. The colors are carefully chosen and each design feature is studied to improve women’s bodies. It’s about expertise and know-how, with a taste for fashion. What kind of high-tech fabrics do you use? We have a special fabric we call peau douce, which has a high level of spandex. It is our secret! Why did Eres become such a staple of the jet-set? When Eres launched in 1968, we were the only store in Paris to sell swimwear year-round. There were a lot of naysayers at the time, but some people traveled to places like the Caribbean or South America, where you need swimwear every time of the year. Being glamorous is a yearround project, and so it started. People traveling everywhere from Punta del Este to Capri came to us because we were the only ones. Then, of course, the impeccable design and collection did the rest. What are you thinking about during the design process? How the suit will work for swimming, the sun, the saltwater, and sand. I also want each piece to be stylish and comfortable, because being comfortable makes you sexy. We design swimwear to be worn and enjoyed.

What are Eres’ biggest markets for swimwear? Europe and America are our focus right now. What is your most iconic suit? The Cassiopée and Show, our bandeau, because the fit is amazing. What is your best seller in East Hampton? This year, the Ceramique and Vert Olive are our best colors, and the Kube collection is selling really well. If you were to take just one Eres bikini to a desert island, which one would you take? The Zamak Alag in pale yellow or black. What is your favorite beach in France? Domaine de Murtoli in Corsica. Where is your favorite summer escape? The one I have not been to yet! Now, I am dreaming of beaches in Mozambique. How do the French feel about Brazilian bikini bottoms? We feel that it’s sexier to leave something to the imagination. Check out the movie Belle de Jour with Catherine Deneuve. Is there a style of bathing suit or cut that you would never create for Eres? Beads and pearls are probably not happening any time soon. What celebrities have been seen in Eres? Everyone, truly. Halle Berry famously wore an orange Eres bathing suit in the James Bond movie Die Another Day, and Eres has also made an appearance on Sex and the City. Eres has had three pop-ups this summer. Have they been successful? Yes! I have never met a person yet who does not like Eres.

amazon INFLUENCE

For the inaugural season of New York Fashion Week: Men’s, Amazon Fashion has tapped celebrated fine-art photographer Erik Madigan Heck to capture the mavericks of the menswear scene who are sold across Amazon’s platforms. Isn’t it about time you met one of the industry’s most in-demand creatives? BY ASHLEY BAKER photography bY ERIK MADIGAN HECK

First things first: How did you become a photographer? When I was 14, my mom, who was a painter, gave me a camera. For the first couple of years, I turned my lens on the girls I was dating at the time, and eventually, that evolved into a career in fashion photography. What was your first important gig? In my early twenties, I lived in Paris, and I met Ann Demeulemeester through friends. I did a project and sent her a couple of pictures, and she wrote me a letter saying that she was so happy with the work I made. We instantaneously had dinner in Paris. We spoke a lot and wrote letters back and forth, and she would commission me to do different special photo and video projects for third parties—she never really did a campaign for her own brand. We became friends out of nowhere, and she’s kind of like a second mom to me. The biggest gig in terms of exposure and money was a job for Acura. I had already finished graduate school at Parsons, and Acura somehow found me and asked me to shoot an exhibition that would travel to seven different cities around the country. You’ve also dabbled in publishing with Nomenus Quarterly. It was a limited-edition collector’s item—you would buy a box of prints and the idea was that you could hang them up in your house and enjoy the art. It cost $7,500. The New York Times ran a front-page story in its Arts section about Nomenus being the world’s most expensive magazine. It was really genius, but terrible press, because it positioned Nomenus as very pretentious. But in effect, the reason it was so expensive was because it was so expensive to produce. We were barely profiting. Nomenus isn’t really in existence anymore. I started a new publication—I like to make things—called No Photos Please, which I sold at Colette in Paris. There are 20 prints in a plastic sleeve instead of a bound publication. Where are you based? New York, but to be honest, I’m here very little. I just returned from Europe after shooting there for a month straight. I spend about half of my time in London. What are you working on these days? I just finished a project with Thom Browne. It’s a campaign, but you won’t see it as an ad—it’s a really beautiful long series of 80 pictures in black and white. I also shoot a lot of fashion stories for Harper’s Bazaar UK. I’m working on my first big monograph of my work, which comes out in early 2016. I am starting as the creative director for Master & Dynamic, a boutique headphone company, so for the next year I’m going to do all their audio creation and work with different brands on custom headphones. For Amazon, you turned your lens on menswear designers. What inspired that project? First of all, there was a lot of thinking that had to be done because we were pulling together 16 very different designers. We tried to find a cohesive way to bring them all to life and have the photographs live as a series. For the past couple years, I’ve been doing fashion from behind. For me, it’s a very subtle, poetical statement about fashion—trying to erase the celebrity from it, and erase the fact that we focus on who’s wearing it as opposed to what they’re wearing. Because this is New York’s first menswear week, I felt like it was really important to show the clothing. We shot one guy from behind, and the sets were all designed around the clothes. There are a lot of monochromatic colors, and some of the photographs are really simple studies of just the fabrics or the silhouettes. Ultimately, menswear, except for Thom Browne’s, is less theatrical and more day-to-day actual ready-to-wear, so it’s harder to really bring it into a world of theater. These are much more realistic pictures and portrayals, but I think they are really powerful art in how simple they are. It’s really about taking a hoodie or Windbreaker and trying to see that object as beautiful. What do you wear? I attempt to be fashionable, but I generally feel silly when I get dressed up. Right now, I’m wearing a pair of faded shorts from middle school that have paint on them and a cotton T-shirt. I like to be invisible when I’m in public. If I can look like a tourist, that’s as good as it gets.

DREAM WEAVERS On July 13, Amazon Fashion unveils another NYFW: Men’s-related project: DreamWorks Animations’ 16-piece Character Clash collection. The range of tees and hoodies features five of its classic figures (Felix the Cat, He-Man, Richie Rich, Underdog, and Where’s Waldo) used in designs from Billy Reid, Ernest Alexander, Michael Bastian, Ovadia & Sons, Public School, Robert Geller, Timo Weiland, and Todd Snyder. “We’re always looking for new ways to tell stories with our characters, and for us, fashion and apparel can serve as that ‘content,’ ” says Brian Robinson, head of creative, design, and development at DreamWorks Animation. “Ultimately, we wanted to create a program that challenged and inspired designers to write a new story, and the Character Clash collection is the result.” Prices range from $75–$175, amazon.com/DWCharacterClash.

The

GospelofMatthew Does Montauk regular and Details’ longtime fashion editor Matthew Marden live up to his nice guy reputation? He sure does! BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFANIA CURTO Where did your interest in fashion begin? I was always a huge fan of my mom’s subscription to Harper’s Bazaar. My room was plastered with fashion images. There were a lot of the old Bruce Weber campaigns for Calvin Klein and the Absolut ads. I wasn’t just drawn to the models, but the images themselves, too. Were you interested in the women’s world? I wasn’t drawn to women’s clothes—it was more the imagery. I liked the men’s clothes because I could relate to that. It also was such a different time—fashion wasn’t like how it is now. I remember watching Elsa Klensch on CNN and the first couple of seasons of MTV’s House of Style. I responded well to it all—the artistry, the pageantry, and the business of it. What did your friends think of this hobby? I didn’t feel bad about hiding my love for fashion. It was just my thing. I grew up in a small conservative New Hampshire town and we all looked alike in a way, but

I love the staff and the people who work here. We’re really scrappy. We’re not like other fashion magazines. There are four of us on the team. If you pitch an idea, you see it being executed. I like the way we have a readership that’s interested in fashion, art, music, food, working out, culture, and politics. We don’t have to be instructional to the reader. We don’t need to explain how to wear a striped shirt with a polka dot tie to the readers. The best part of my job is going to Europe and looking at the collections. It’s not that hard—I really don’t like it when people complain about having to go! Some editors dread the shows. We’re lucky! They’re really inspirational. You should be able to get something out of every show you see. So the clothes aren’t the best, but there’s might be a model in there I want to shoot, or the music’s really amazing, or the space is really wonderful. Which Fashion Week is your favorite? Milan, hands down. Most people don’t like Milan, but I don’t know why. I know it’s

people would say that I dressed really well. I might have had a cashmere sweater on instead of a cotton one. I paid a lot of attention to what I wore. Where did you go to college? Colby College in Maine, where I studied art history. I was one of those people who worked really hard to get into a good school and when I got there, I relaxed a little. I stopped playing sports. After school, I got a job at a photography gallery in New York. Combining that experience with what I learned at Colby was the best education I could have gotten, because I learned about the history of fashion through the artists and photographers we represented. How did you transition from galleries to magazines? Hilary Heard, who was doing PR for Manolo Blahnik at the time, knew that Town & Country was looking for someone to do men’s fashion. She had me meet with Michael Cannon, who was the former editor-at-large and men’s fashion director. We got along, and he took a chance on me. I worked at T&C for two years. What was next? I tried to do the L.A. thing with the intention that I wanted to move there forever. It was all very glamorous and chic and fun. I freelanced on all kinds of things. I ended up getting lured back to New York for a job that didn’t work out, but I ended up working with Bruce Pask on Cargo before the magazine launched. That’s where I met [style editor] Eugene [Tong]. I then started freelancing at Details in 2004. I got here and was like, ‘Wow! This is fashion with a capital F.” The first thing I remember pulling here was the Nick Lachey cover shoot, where he was wearing the fur and the leather. I’ve been really fortunate. I love it here. What’s kept you at Details for more than a decade?

not necessarily the prettiest city in the world, but there are beautiful parts to it. I love a lot of the industrial areas, too. There’s also a warmth and friendliness and real way of life there, which is comforting. Did you ever think New York Men’s Fashion Week would emerge? I was very hopeful it would, and I’m very pleased. Obviously, men’s shows have happened here, but they tend to get lost in the women’s schedule. We’ve been wanting this to happen even before London became a thing. The success of that city really helped to pull things together here. Some designers and editors have complained that it’s one more exhausting week on the calendar. Thoughts? I think that’s complete bulls**t. Get another job. What’s your personal aesthetic? I’m preppy, but I do feel like my look is evolving a little bit. Sometimes I joke that I’m dressing like someone who works at PR Consulting or KCD, because I think those guys look great. That’s why I wear suits all the time! You’ve got a nice guy reputation. I’m nice. It gets boring, but that’s how I am. You get better results being nice. I’m sure I can be super bitchy like anyone, but I work in a creative environment with a lot of collaboration, so you have to be open to other people’s ideas. That doesn’t mean sacrificing your point of view, but your ideas can shift. Do you have any aspirations to be an editor in chief? Maybe—I’m a really quick decision-maker and I stand behind my ideas. I like being nice, but I know what I like, I know what I don’t like. I know what works, and I know what doesn’t. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY

SAINT

NICK

With nearly half a million Instagram followers and as many fashion collabs as his pal Pharrell, former retailer Nick Wooster is a menswear maverick on the move—literally, jetting from Australia (where he designed a luxe wool underwear line) to Japan to Pitti Uomo in Florence. Wooster’s facial hair, pompadour, tattoos, and dapper duds have made him a star, but the 55-year-old spends his downtime relaxing at home in the West Village. Over lunch at Morandi, Wooster explained his ascent. BY PETER DAVIS Bloggers drool over your style. You must have a massive closet. Are you a shopaholic? Of course. I’m a full-price shopper. I think it’s my obligation, by the way. I love Dover Street, Barneys, Bergdorf. At the moment, the West Coast has some of the most interesting retailers: Mohawk General Store in Silver Lake, Union on La Brea, RTH on La Cienega in L.A.; Unionmade in San Francisco. Gentry NYC in Brooklyn is great, too, and I love Japan. It’s a shame that more Western brands and stores aren’t more in tune with what’s happening there. You are a major jet-setter. Any travel tips? Well, I travel at least once a month—I’ve logged over 85,000 miles this year— but I am the worst traveler in the world, because I overpack. You would think that I would have learned by now, but no. I’m very organized and I know how I like to pack things: pants go first, jackets on top, sweaters and shirts on the side. How have sites like Instagram changed the world of men’s fashion? They have given men a road map without having them ask for direction. Blogs, Tumblr, and Instagram have all contributed to the systematic uncovering of information. I’m a guy, and I don’t ask for directions. I think I can figure it out myself, and the same is true for men getting dressed. They want to know, but they don’t want to ask. Your Instagram account is like an ad for Nick Wooster, the brand. I’m not a corporation. I only started it because, like many other people, I’m in the center of some interesting things. The first time I flew on a private plane, I took a picture because I couldn’t believe that I was on a private plane. I love the idea of having a visual diary of what’s going on in my life. In the old days, I used to thumb through a shoebox full of old pictures. Now, it’s conveniently on my phone in a chronological order. The fact that people are interested? I’m superflattered. But sometimes I do go dark—like, I’m sick of me. What’s your best style advice? Everybody looks great in navy blue—navy peacoat, navy overcoat, navy Windbreaker, navy blazer, navy suit. I’m a huge fan of navy sneakers, too. At the end of the day, that’s all a guy really needs. You’ve worked for Barneys, Bergdorf, and other big brands. Do you miss having a full-time power job? I think I’m unemployable now, so the days of me showing up to work every day are behind me, which is okay, because I did it for a long time. I was programmed to believe that was the only way that I could make a living. In certain ways, I work harder

now, because it’s relentless, but I’m able to call my own shots and not have to follow the dress code. You design for Lardini in Italy, United Arrows in Japan, an underwear brand in Australia, and a new project in China. When you were a buyer, did you really want to be a fashion designer? No. The world doesn’t need more designers, but people today are interested in a point of view. There’s a group of people who are interested in things I have to say, so I feel like I’m providing a service. As long as people would like to see what I do, I’m happy to keep doing it. Your designs are very much aligned with your personal style. Selfishly, I’m in this for the clothes. You do so many things at the same time. Do you have an assistant? No, probably for the same reason that I’m not in a relationship. I’m very closed, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. A relationship? I’m definitely done with those. I need an assistant. I need help! How do you unplug from the fashion frenzy? I love Fire Island. I turn on the television, I watch a movie, I read a book, and I smoke some cigarettes.

CHIC estates

BRYAN MIDLAM, CORCORAN

Coming out East since… 2004. I graduated from college and was recruited to work in real estate. I didn’t even know where the Hamptons were! Abode: Sag Harbor Village. My wife is a teacher at the elementary school. Restaurant haunts: Beacon in Sag Harbor. It’s hard to beat. If you go at the right time, it’s just perfect. To avoid the wait, go early and go as a couple. Grocer of choice: We have a second mortgage with Provisions. Exercise plan: I have a trainer and a gym in my house. There are no excuses when he comes in the morning. Cocktail: The spicy margarita at Dockside. Most memorable sale: I sold a house on the ocean when I was 26. It had been on the market for two years, and after I listed it, it was gone in two weeks. My head was spinning! Average listings per summer: About 20. A great client is… Someone who trusts you to do your job.

LILLY DE LA MOTTE, SAUNDERS

Coming out East since… 2000, but I’ve been living here full-time for three years. In a former life… I was the assistant bookings editor at Harper’s Bazaar and the bookings editor at Seventeen. I also did a stint in fashion PR at Harrison & Shriftman. Restaurant haunts: Dockside in Sag Harbor. I’m there twice a week for lunch. Order the nachos, which are off the menu. Shopping musts: Tenet in Southampton, which carries a lot of my favorite designers. Marketplace: Round Swamp Farms in Bridgehampton, particularly for prepared food. I love the crab cakes and chicken francese. Best part of the job: Working with people who are friends or friends of friends. Most of my clients are referral-based. Prospective buyers should ask… How do I want to spend my time out East? Do I like water views? More land? A village within walking distance? A beach cottage? There are so many lifestyles available. Client cravings: Open layouts and finished lower levels, like a wine cellar and a movie room.

MEG SALEM, SAUNDERS

Coming out East since… I’ve been living and working here for 10 years. I’d been coming out for another 10 before that from NYC. Career history: I worked for Procter & Gamble in sales and marketing and had a consulting partnership in consumer goods. Abode: East Hampton Village. Restaurant haunts: Nick & Toni’s. I love Dave’s Grill in Montauk. Beach: Egypt. I need to get my pass! Workout: I paddleboard, but I’m kind of a gym rat, so I go to East Hampton gym. It’s a block from my house. Proximity is everything! Best celeb sighting: Bill and Hillary Clinton. Cocktail: Anything from the Maidstone in the garden. Everything there is so fresh. Shopping musts: Michael Kors, Scoop, Theory, and Ralph Lauren. Most memorable sale: I’m working on it! A great client is… Somebody who communicates, gives feedback, and listens. The more I know about my clients, the better.

ENZO MORABITO, Douglas Elliman

Coming out East since… I was a lifeguard here over 40 years ago. Abode: Westhampton Beach. It has the best school system. Restaurant haunts: The American Hotel in Sag Harbor. New places come and go, but it has a level of excellence. Best celeb sightings: One of the reasons I like the Hamptons is that in some villages there are celebrities, but nobody seems to care. I’m friendly with Alec Baldwin, and I worked with Susan Lucci, too. She’s a wonderful lady. Shopping musts: Edward Archer of Southampton. I went to school with him. J.McLaughlin carries some nice clothes, too. I like Italian brands. Prospective buyers should ask… Where do you want to be? We try to expose people to different areas—it’s all special out here. Haute hood: Sagaponack is hot as possibly could be.

kidson thestreet When it comes to talking fashion, everyone has an opinion—including the youngsters we encountered at Herrick Park in East Hampton. BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN LIU

Mallory, 12, recent seventh-grade graduate What’s your take on Hamptons style? Preppy and kind of fancy. How do Hamptonites dress? They wear bright colors. Where do you shop? Vineyard Vines. What happens at a fashion show? People walk down an aisle and model. What would you never wear? A big hat. Why not? I don’t like hats. What about a small hat? That would be better. Are you excited to eventually wear high heels? I guess.

Luke, 6, rising first-grader

What’s your everyday look? A uniform. At Christmas, I have to wear a tie. Do you like wearing ties? No. Do you want to learn how to tie one? No. Do you want a job where you have to wear a tie to work? Maybe. Would you ever want to work in fashion? No. Why not? It’s mostly for girls. What do you think of Hamptons style? I don’t pay attention. What happens at a fashion show? People come out on the stage. Why does style matter? You have to have good style when you go on a date. Are you speaking from experience? Not yet.

Victoria, 4, preschool student

How many dresses do you own? Infinity! Why do you love fashion? Because it’s pretty. Some girls only wear pants at school, but I like dresses. Where do you like to shop? Kmart. What happens at a fashion show? They pose like me. What do you want to be when you grow up? A mom. What’s your favorite store in East Hampton? Dylan’s Candy Bar. What’s your favorite treat? Gummies. Are you excited to eventually wear high heels? I have them now. I like to wear pink.

Chloe, 9, recent third-grade graduate

What’s your take on Hamptons style? Flip-flops and shorts. Where are the best-dressed people: here or in New York City? Here. The clothes are brighter. It’s a little darker in the city. Very astute. Where do you shop? Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and J.Crew. Do you have a favorite fashion designer? Not really, but I know this one designer who is also a Chloe and she makes nice clothing. I like her because of the name. I also like Milly and Lilly Pulitzer. Who is the best-dressed person you know? My cousin Olivia.

Olivia, 11, rising sixth-grader

Alessandra, 8, rising third-grader

Cute nails. What’s your favorite store? Bloomingdale’s. I like to get nice dresses or a shirt. Who are you wearing today? Crewcuts. Who do you find stylish? I really like

Taylor Swift’s outfits. Have you ever worn a gown? No, but if I did, I’d want it to be bright pink with white lace. What does it mean to have good style? I can’t think of a word to describe it. Are you excited to wear high heels? I already have a huge collection of like 10 pairs. Do you ever borrow your mom’s heels? Not really. She hates them. Does she borrow from your stash? We’re not the same size. What would you never wear? Big, saggy overalls. They’re ugly! How old is East Hampton? About 70.

What would you never wear? Sneakers with a long dress. Which colors do you avoid? I’ve grown out of light pink. What happens at Surf Lodge? Surfing.

Mitchell, 11, rising sixth-grader

What’s your take on Hamptons style? Chic but still conservative. What does “chic” mean? Up-to-date with trends and new. Who’s the best-dressed person you know? My sister. Name a supermodel. I know this Victoria’s Secret model. Kloss something. What does it mean to have good style? Staying up-to-date and mixing and matching your clothes. What would you never wear? Plaid or any odd patterns. How old is Sag Harbor? About 76 years old.

What’s your take on Hamptons style? Fancy and colorful. Speaking of colorful, love your braces. They’re pink, blue, and silver. I just got them. They hurt for the first few days. Sorry about that! Where do you shop? I like the T-shirts at Abercrombie. What does your shirt say? Something in French, but I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter, anyway. Do you drink coffee? No. My favorite drink is Vitaminwater. Do you know any supermodels? Alessandra Ambrosio. Nice! Which clothing styles do you avoid? The pants that go in at the bottom and are loose on top. I also wouldn’t wear overalls. Sometimes they can be fashionable, but mostly, they remind me of people who work on farms. What does it mean to have bad style? To wear stripes and plaids together. g e t t y i m a g es ( 2 ) ; sh u t t e r s t o c k
