SUIT PURSUITS With anh Duong

What did your first eres suit look like? I don’t remember, but I grew up in France, and when you could invest in a bathing suit, it was Eres. What’s your favorite summer memory of the hamptons? I did my first portrait in Montauk. I was staying at the Warhol estate, and that’s where I started painting in the summer of ’89. have you ever painted in an eres bathing suit? I have, yes! I painted myself in one years ago. Funny you should ask!

SCENE Did you spot the

bikini-clad models breezing down Main Street in East Hampton a few Saturdays ago? You have Eres to thank. The party was hosted by artist Anh Duong, who tempted guests with tiny éclairs, champagne, and bracelets in all the colors of the season. ☛ Meanwhile, Ben Watts brought his popular Shark Attack Sounds affair to the newly revamped Gurney’s Inn. Shhhh….

Watermill’s hautest moments On July 26, the crème de la East End will descend upon Robert Wilson’s lair for the Watermill Center Gala. In addition to champagne and canapés, they will feast on an exhibition of Wilson’s video portraits of Lady Gaga, which have been peeped only by visitors to the Louvre and Galerie Ropac in Paris. During the live auction, expect a bidding frenzy for works by Julian Schnabel, Ross Bleckner, and Wilson, bien sûr, in addition to “experiences” from Prada, Fendi, and Armani. THEATER SPEAK!

With scott schwartz, artistic director, bay street theater What’s on bay street’s lineup? Our next play is Travesties, which stars the amazing comedian Richard Kind. It’s Tom Stoppard’s take on The Importance of Being Ernest. It has pie fights, a burlesque number, song and dance, brilliant wordplay, and amazing robert cuccioli ideas about art and revolution. After that is My Life Is a Musical, a musical comedy featuring Robert Cuccioli, who starred in the original Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway. What does bay street mean to sag harbor? We bring professional theater to the community, but we also offer many services throughout the year as a social and cultural gathering place for the whole East End. We just announced two new projects—Blackout at Bay Street, a late-night cabaret program, and a Shakespeare initiative.

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

In 2002, I had a big break and was lucky enough to be featured in Vogue as an up-and-coming hairdresser. It changed everything for me.

First things first: How did you become involved with the brand? As a brand with more than 25 years of history, it has always been important to John Frieda Hair Care to make products that a professional would want and need and then give the consumers access to those tools. But you need someone to explain to consumers how they work in a clear way. You really need a bridge with a professional stylist who can bring the products and transformations to life. Thankfully, they chose me. What’s your background? I first worked for a salon in Vancouver, Canada, called Axis. After that, I went to America and started at the bottom all over again. I struggled for 10 years and I was sleeping on a sofa for six of them. I lived off of Kraft Mac n’ Cheese and Mr. Noodles. What changed? In 2002, I had a big break and was lucky enough to be featured in Vogue as an up-and-coming hairdresser. It changed everything for me. After that, my career grew. I’ve been a hair expert on the Today show, CBS’s The Early Show, and Oprah. What’s your favorite summer product? Frizz Ease is my favorite line and a must in my kit. Everyone has frizz— women with fine hair, straight hair—it’s not just for thick, curly hair. That’s a common misconception. I’ve used the Frizz Ease serums on so many of my A-list clients because for them, frizz is not an option and their styles need to last. What celebs have you worked with? Hilary Swank, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne, Ellen Pompeo, and Kate Bosworth, and supermodels like Helena Christensen, Gisele Bündchen, and Christy Turlington Burns. Gisele’s hair is pretty amazing! Rose Byrne, too. What look did you create for our cover shoot? We styled both models the same way. We washed the blonde’s hair with Luxurious Volume, because I wanted to get some body in there. Next, I used Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse, applied it from root to tip on wet hair, and I dried her hair using my blow-dryer and my fingertips. I put rollers over the top and then I used a product called Frizz Ease Go Curlier Heat-Activated Spray. You spray the hair, blow it dry, and then wrap each section of hair with the curling iron. The product helps hair hold the shape so that when you brush it, kind of

like a TV commercial, it springs up. We shot six pictures and it was still holding! Is it better than hairspray? They’re different. The hold looks a little softer but still keeps the style. Many women will need to continuously reset their hair with hairspray, which is time-consuming, so this product might be a preferable option for some women. There’s a certain polymer and technology that’s exclusive to us that responds to heat. It’s often imitated, never duplicated. We hear you have a luxury tool line. Yes! I can re-create any red carpet look with John Frieda drugstore products, but I definitely require a specific set of tools, too! How fast is your dryer? It’s twice as fast as a normal dryer, and it’s still faster than most professional dryers on the market. People say their drying time is cut in half. What are your secrets to great summer hair? When you come out of the shower, work in some Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Leave-In Conditioner and wrap your hair into a bun. That way, your hair will be conditioned when you’re under the sun. After the water, our Frizz Ease Nourishing Oil Elixir is a musthave. When your hair is wet, just put three pumps into your hands and press it through your ends. You don’t have to blow-dry it. It smooths the hair, gives it a little bit of sheen, and allows you to have frizz-free curls wherever you are. Any other tips? Frizzy-haired girls have to manipulate the hair while it’s in soaking-wet form. Blot the soaking-wet hair then immediately put in your serum, mousse, or other stylers so that when the air hits that frizz, there’s weight on it and it doesn’t unravel. How do you achieve the dreamiest beach look? If you have fine, straight hair and crave voluminous, beachy waves, the John Frieda Luxurious Volume line will be good for you—shampoo, conditioner, root booster, all of the above—then apply a thin, tiny curling iron to dry hair all over. You’ll look like Shirley Temple with ringlets for a good 15 minutes, but your curls will relax and stretch out into waves very quickly in the heat. Any tips for chlorine removal? A natural remedy is coconut oil, which removes a lot of debris from the hair. Where can we find you in the city? At the Serge Normant for John Frieda Salon!

CHIC duo What happens when vbeauté maven Julie Macklowe hosts a lunch in Sagaponack for her favorite designer du moment, Honor’s Giovanna Randall? A lot of fashion, a little gossip, and just a splash of rosé. BY PAIGE REDDINGER PHotoGRAPHY BY StEfANIA cuRto

DOUBLE

DATE!

TALKING SHOP!

With Julie and Giovanna When did you meet? Julie: Three years ago, when Giovanna had just opened her store downtown. Giovanna: I was immediately struck by Julie, because she wore a pink lace look from my store, which she layered over another dress. She put it together the way I would want to wear it. Julie: Giovanna makes very strong, cool clothes that are still feminine and not too hard. I wear a lot of things that are a little more edgy, but I can wear Honor to work or out on the weekends in the Hamptons. The clothes have a nice, modern sensibility. And then you worked together on Julie’s Met Gala dress. Giovanna: Yes! It was an amazing highlight of my career. She was so easy to work with and agreeable. I proposed a bunch of different options, and we tried on four or five different muslins before picking the best shape. Julie: She came up with a color that I would have never chosen—yellow! I wasn’t completely sold at first. Giovanna: But she looked so great in it. What prompted this lunch? Julie: After the Met, people kept asking me, “Who made your dress?” I felt that not enough of my friends knew about Honor or Giovanna. This is a great way to introduce them and see some of the beautiful clothing. This is the first time I’ve actually hosted a lunch for a designer! FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

MEET

Ramona Singer and Rachel fleit

THE GUESTS… RAMONA SINGER Thoughts on the clothes? I think they’re very interesting and very different. In the Hamptons and New York City, people like to follow the same trends, and you get caught up in wearing the same dress as someone else or having the same style. Giovanna’s style is very unique. She has a bit of a bohemian look, but very artistic. And I’ve always admired Julie’s style. How often do you get invited to things like this? I get a lot of invites but I have to pick and choose, because I’m married and I have a daughter. As you get older in life, you realize that it’s all about special time with family and friends. Julie is a new friend of mine—I’ve seen her around and we’ve always chitchatted, but I got to know her better, and she’s a remarkable woman. What you see is what you get. Do designers want to dress you for the show? I’m open, but I don’t wear things just because designers say, “Can you wear this? It’s for free!” No. I only support what I love. For instance, Julie makes a fabulous lip gloss from her line, VBeauté.

CHRIS MACK Did you ever model? Yes, a long time ago, for a few years in the ’80s. I’m 6-foot-1, and the clothing samples are a size 4 or 2 and if you’re 6'1", you’re not a size 2. I’m originally from

Sweden, so I came to New York to model, and afterward, I went to school and stayed here. Do the Hamptons remind you of Europe? Sweden is more like Maine, because we don’t have beaches.

HONOR’S RACHEL FLEIT How did you end up at Honor? I was looking to transition from working in independent film production and nonprofit arts administration when I reconnected with my friend from high school, Giovanna. We started talking about her vision for her brand and one day I said, “I need a new job.” Her face lit up and she said, “Come work for me!”

LISE EVANS How long have you been coming to the Hamptons? I’m Norwegian. I moved here when I was 20, which was 26 years ago. I was a model. But then I lived in London and Hong Kong for many years. But let’s say I’ve lived here for about 16 years and I’ve been coming out here since I was 20. Has it changed a lot since then? Yes, but what’s wonderful is that most of the people who go to the Hamptons do not really go to the beach. Europeans go to the beach, so here, we own it! These lunches help with the empty beaches. b fA n yc . c o M ( 2 )

GirlTown About

For most Shelter Island residents, an afternoon trip to Sag Harbor is an essential activity. Designer Rebecca Taylor boarded the ferry and invited The Daily Summer along to check out her favorite spots in town. Are you ready for a history lesson? BY EDDIE ROCHE pHOTOgRApHY BY STEFAnIA CuRTO

TO THE STREETS! “I’m fascinated by little villages. I’ve always been interested in the immigrants and early settlers. New Zealand [Taylor’s native country] was settled like that not long ago. When I first came here it felt like home. I hadn’t even been to the Hamptons when I bought my place on Shelter Island. I came out in the winter first and just as we were riding across on the ferry the most magical snow started and deer ran across the street and we knew we were home. We bought a house that week. It was the only house that we looked at!” FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Today, I brought some local grapes, a baguette, prosciutto, goat cheese, pasta, and a little cake. I’m not much of a cook, but I have high hopes. This is the summer of cooking. It’s so soulless going to restaurants all the time, and it gets to be so expensive. I’d rather go to a wine store and spend $150 on two amazing bottles of wine.”

(Liquor Store) 89 Division St. “As far as they know, this is the oldest freestanding building in continuous use in the village. It was built in 1790 and used as a barracks for American troops during the war of 1812. It’s been a wine store for five years now, and we love the selection.”

ScentS & SenSIBILItY

Perfumer Kilian Hennessy hails from a storied lineage of luxury (his family is the “H” in LVMH), so it’s no wonder he inherited an innate understanding of entrepreneurship and taste. Under his fragrance label By Kilian, founded in 2007, Hennessy is combining the quality presentation of turn-of-the-century parfums with a visionary approach to the craft. BY PAIGE REDDINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO What’s your backstory? I’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years. I started at Dior and then Paco Rabanne. I stayed there for four years until I resigned to join Gucci Group. I worked on Alexander McQueen’s first perfume, Kingdom, for almost three years until I resigned again to join the L’Oréal group to work on Giorgio Armani. After three years, I left to start my own company. What was your concept? Something that no longer existed. The ’70s and ’80s were great times in the perfume industry, and those big brands were in the hands of presidents who knew perfume culture. The launch of a fragrance would be a very important moment in the life of the company, and that was done by the president of a company within these big groups, directly with the president of a big perfume house. How have things changed? The new generation that has taken over consists of more marketing-minded people who usually come from Procter & Gamble or Unilever. Which retailer launched your brand? Bergdorf Goodman. I ended up dating the buyer, so it went really well! [laughs] Elisabeth [Noel Jones] and I got married in Paris this summer. What’s your signature scent? Most of the time it’s the perfume I’m working on, but when I go out at night, I wear Back to Black Aphrodisiac and Amber Oud. On weekends, when I want to feel more casual, I wear Bamboo Harmony, Imperial Tea, Prelude to Love, and three of our new scents that are coming out in October. New scents? Tell us more. I was thinking about how addictions can translate into the world of perfume. Light My Fire has cigar notes—not tobacco. Intoxicated was inspired by my travels in the Middle East and a coffee I adore that’s scented with cardamom seeds. The third scent is about addiction to cannabis; I call it Smoke for the Soul. If you’re arrested, you can show your bottle and say, “Not me! It’s Kilian’s fault!” We’ll keep that in mind. Why are your scents unisex? I don’t feel like scents should be gendered. What interests me is the link or the olfactory translation of the emotion carried by the name. You just launched a scented jewelry line. How does that work? I always had the ambition to make perfume visible. The world we live in is so image-driven; whatever cannot be shown in an image doesn’t exist. I started with a clutch—chances are, if she’s wearing my clutch,

she’s also wearing one of the perfumes in the collection. But the industry has been offering the same products for the past 100 years. We have not invented anything—it’s still a bottle with a pump and a spray. So we started with necklaces that have a hidden vial, but people have been doing that since the 1920s. Now there’s a new revolution in the scenting process. It’s called micro-encapsulation, which allows you to encapsulate a scent into a microcapsule that can be injected in the fabric itself. In the jewelry collection, the silk cords and leather bracelets are microencapsulated. The scent will last for about a year. Wow. What are the other aesthetic signatures? Every metal piece has a cage element, and inside is a ceramic piece that captures the scent. Once you have chosen the style you like, you can pick one of my 26 scents to put into the ceramic piece. Whenever you feel like it’s not smelling, you can just re-spray the ceramic. What’s your approach to packaging? One night, after dinner at the Baccarat restaurant in Paris, I went by the Baccarat museum, which is on the same floor. Lucky me, the exhibition covered 100 years of perfume bottles. You would see those wood coffers, satin bedding, keys, and tassels, and I thought, this is exactly what I want to do. I want to go back to what felt right, what felt beautiful, what felt luxury. Why don’t you make lotions? Perfume is an art, and I find no art in shower gel. Luxury should not be disposable. Everything we create has the ultimate purpose of lasting a lifetime. That’s why all our bottles are refillable— even our travel spray—and our boxes are meant to be reusable. I cannot do that with a shower gel or a body cream. What does your bespoke offering entail? It’s a luxury offering for customers who want to create their own scent with me. During the first meeting, I try to understand what it is in the world that you would like. Maybe you love orange blossom, but you don’t like the scents on the market. Chic! May we ask the price? $30,000. I just finished one for a husband and wife in Hungary. I finished one for a Saudi Arabian princess, and I am working on another for a customer from New York City. What’s next? On October 1 we’re unveiling the new Addictive Scent of Mind collection; candles come out in November. In 2015, I’m launching another big category: home. We’re opening five stores between now and the end of the month, and by the end of the year, we’ll have eight.

CHIC Ride

Soul(Cycle)SearChing

If you haven’t yet joined the cult of SoulCycle, well, you may be frequenting the wrong Fork. The souped-up cycling obsession’s Bridgehampton outpost, aka “The Barn”, was actually co-founders’ Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice’s sophomore location, even before their canary yellow signage popped up in every NYC ’hood. Now in its eighth summer season, SoulCycle has three Hamptons outposts and thousands of superfans. In Cutler’s lush East Hampton yard, she and Rice school us on all things Soul-ful. BY ALEXANDRA ILYASHOV PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

How soon after launching SoulCycle did you invade the Hamptons? Julie Rice: We’d been open for a year on West 72nd Street when we got a call from a friend saying there was a great location open in Bridgehampton. We certainly weren’t ready to open a second location! We were a very new business. But SoulCycle is about a lifestyle beyond the bike, so it felt synergistic—the Hamptons is about lifestyle, good health, and really enjoying yourself in the moment. It was definitely a risky move! How did you build out the Barn? Julie: At the time, we were a tiny group of people. It was all crew on deck. Elizabeth Cutler: I was painting the bathroom. Julie: Every 45 minutes we would call someone in the city and tell them to bring something—wall decals, window shades—out on the Jitney. I think by 2 p.m. there was nobody we knew in the city left. It was really a labor of love. The Barn became SoulCycle’s crown jewel. Why did the space feel right? Elizabeth: It’s a special place, so rustic and openair. It’s an old potato barn that used to be located much closer to the ocean; it was moved up probably 30 years ago. It’s got a great fitness pedigree—the Lotte Berk Method used to be there. Julie: SoulCycle is so community-based, and the Barn puts that on steroids. All of a sudden, busy New Yorkers have an extra 20 minutes to stay and chat. Why did the Hamptons need SoulCycle? Julie: A few studios had been out here for a long time, but nobody was disrupting the Hamptons fitness scene or making it social. We’ve seen things pop up after us, but we definitely paved the way. What prompted you to open other East End outposts? Julie: The wait lists were getting crazy. It went from being this amazing experience that everyone wanted, to not being able to get in. We tried to find more space at the Barn, but that wasn’t going to happen. Why did you pick East Hampton and Water Mill? Elizabeth: We opened in East Hampton in 2011. Our business was very strong; we had double-digit growth during the recession. At the time, Julie was having her second child; I had three kids. My husband was like, “I swear to God, I don’t know what I am going to do if you don’t do this [location]. It’s so close to our house.” Last summer, we opened a location for the Water Mill crowd. Anything new at your Hamptons locations? Julie: We’re doing Soul Summer Body in the basement of our East Hampton studio. It’s a rotation of different add-ons to SoulCycle classes—a personal training type of thing. Your superstar instructors, like Stacey and Rique, tend to teach out East. Julie: We try to mix it up, so you’ll find a fantastic newbie teaching alongside a master. We really do try to put names in a hat, shake it up, and see what happens, but there are definitely names like Stacey who’ve been teaching since we opened the Barn’s doors. Is there a SoulCycle staffer pad? Julie: When we opened out East, we realized that we had to bring the people we’d trained to do it, so we decided to rent a house. It’s become Camp SoulCycle with bonding and barbecues! Elizabeth: It’s a big commitment on our part—now, we have, like, 16 rental cars and three houses. Julie: All jokes aside, camp is really how Elizabeth and I run our business. It’s important to continuously

bond, work together, and play together. How do you bond? Julie: Can we talk about Tequila Tuesday, or is that off the record? Elizabeth: [Laughs] Yes, we have Tequila Tuesday in the office around 5 p.m. Sometimes we have Tequila Tuesday and Tequila Friday. Julie: Birthdays are celebrated with tubs of Sixteen Handles frozen yogurt and toppings. It’s amazing. Let’s discuss this gorgeous house, Elizabeth. How long have you had it? Elizabeth: I’ve been here for 15 years. Right before my husband and I got married, we came out for the weekend and we looked at houses. This was the second house that we saw. I didn’t want guests to feel stuck—they can walk into town, and just have their own Hamptons experience. Where can we find you and the fam, besides

You leave feeling more enlightened than when you came in—and that’s not because it’s a light exercise.

SoulCycle? Elizabeth: My husband is a big boater, so we’re out on the water, surfing and stuff. And I love the idea of farm-to-table. I go to farm stands, Red Horse Market for fresh mozzarella, East Hampton Gourmet, and Cavaniola’s Cheese Shop in Sag Harbor. Do you go out East a lot as well, Julie? Julie: Off and on. I come out here for holidays, and I spend three weeks in the summer. Elizabeth and I will eat dinner together on the beach with our families, and ultimately our girls will burst into some type of a talent show. Do you two hang out at the Barn much? Julie: We used to spend more time here at the front desk, so we could understand what people really wanted. These days, we’re working gals with a real office and real desks, which we certainly didn’t have eight years ago. But on summer weekends, you can definitely find us riding at a studio each morning. Do riders geek out over being in a class with a

SoulCycle co-founder? Julie: People are always excited to see us—they always have something tucked away that they want to say: “Hey, I love that new teacher, thanks for upgrading the bathroom, we can use a 6 a.m. class at this studio…” We still work behind the front desk ourselves; we fold towels. Do you have a least-favorite task? Elizabeth: I don’t even mind spraying shoes. Have your kids tried SoulCycle yet? Julie: Yes, they love it. They’ve grown up with the business, and they have a lot of pride in it. In the beginning, our babysitters were also working at the front desk. Elizabeth: I waited until my daughter was old enough to ride. You know how when you wait for something for such a long time, when it comes, you aren’t sure you want it anymore? That happened to my daughter. She’s been riding, but I’m not sure how much she likes it. My youngest one has been asking to ride, so I just lowered the handlebars and broke the rules. Turns out, she loves it—I’m impressed. Let’s talk retail. What’s the deal with your threads? Julie: When we first started, we had a few thousand dollars left after building our first studio. We created T-shirts to give to 100 of the coolest people we knew. One day, our wheel is going to be like the Nike [swoosh]—we won’t have to even put our name on it anymore, just our symbol with the word “Soul,” and people will just know what that is. That’s what we did, and people really loved it. Elizabeth: We’ve kept our brand really clean. We don’t sell anything at our studios that wasn’t made or branded by us. Julie: We now do 14 collections a year—one a month, one for holiday, and one for resort. Now our studios have become full-on retail stores—people who don’t ride will still come in and shop our collection. Wait, really? Julie: SoulCycle is what happens in the studio, and Soul is what happens when you put on our clothing! We’re actually getting ready to do a much bigger apparel line. We’re really well-positioned to become an apparel brand as well as a fitness brand. Would that be carried at other stores? Julie: We’re playing with that a bit. We aren’t ready to be a wholesale brand yet. But our collaboration with Net-A-Porter came out last month—the clothes are slightly more urban, chic, and filled with black and white. We also did our second collection with Shopbop recently, which was designed with the new Malibu studio in mind. What’s up with that skull motif? Elizabeth: When you get on the bike, you want to dig deep and the skull represents getting your most badass self on and bringing it so hard. Julie: SoulCycle is not fluffy. You’re working hard. You leave feeling more enlightened than when you came in—and that’s not because it’s a light exercise. Any dream fashion collaborators? Julie: If Riccardo Tisci wants to do something with us, that would be a very natural pairing. And if Alexander Wang is listening, he would be perfect. Any other locations in the works? Elizabeth: We’re looking at other East Coast places that might be obvious, like Martha’s Vineyard. We’ll open in Coral Gables, Florida, and Northern California this winter, and we’re also doing something really cool in Orange County. We’re going to roll out Chicago in 2015, for sure. After that? London!

THE LAST FREE RIDE

Strapped for cash? Tired of Lindy’s? Looking to make new friends? Hop on board the Hamptons Free Ride, an ad-supported shuttle service offering gratis transportation throughout the East End. We spent a recent Saturday kicking the tires. BY DENA SILVER PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN LIU

12:14: We board a deserted car in East Hampton’s long-term lot bound for Main Beach. En route, a woman on a bicycle smiles and waves. 12:20: Upon arrival, we admire the views while awaiting our next Ride until we find ourselves in conversation with Sally Karpen, 59, a sales manager and Free Ride regular. How did you discover the Free Ride? I stay at a lovely bed-and-breakfast—which is very economical!—that knows all about the different shuttle services. Do you have a favorite driver? I have a few! I don’t know their names, but they all know me. What’s your favorite freebie? The glass of wine. And once, I was picked up by a guy who was much younger than me. [Sally points] Did you know that’s Paul McCartney’s house across the street? I saw him at Shea Stadium once. This weekend, I saw Nathan Lane. There are so many celebrities out here. By the way, do you know of any parties? 12:31: Google tells me it’s not actually Sir Paul McCartney’s house. 12:45: Still waiting. Decide to kill time by chatting with Nevada Tinsman, 26, a marketing manager. Is this your first Free Ride? Yeah. I have my car out here, even though it’s a pain in the butt to drive around. Do you have a beach sticker? My parents do. 1:05: Our chariot arrives! James Savarese, 26, is behind the wheel. So, James… How do you like driving this bad boy? It’s like driving your own car, except very slowly. Have you had any interesting passengers today? Maybe you’ll be the first. Maybe! Do people treat The Free Ride like a cab? They try to. People walk up and go, “20 Ocean Avenue,” and I’m like, “Nope, that’s not how it works.” But that’s just the New York crowd. They’re still learning. What’s your least favorite part of the job? Sometimes I get yelled at, which is pretty unacceptable. I should be heralded.

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

1:19: Back in the long-term lot, we spot Karen Goldberg and Beth Goldstein, both “in their forties,” disembarking from a vehicle. We approach carefully. When was the first time you took The Free Ride? Beth: Maybe two years ago. When did it start? In 2011. Beth: We probably took it then. What were you doing that summer? Karen: What do you mean “doing”? We always come out here for one or two weekends. Seen any celebs? Karen: Diane Keaton and Alec Baldwin. We saw her through a window, and we saw him playing with his baby. 1:26: Back at the beach, we bump into Kara Walker, 23, a teacher. How was your first Free Ride? It’s nice. You get a breeze, conversation, and the opportunity to meet people. Are you on vacation? Sort of. I still work during the week, but I’m kind of on vacation. The Free Ride has a “selfie machine.” Thoughts? I’m a fan of selfies in an ironic way, but I wouldn’t just take a photo of myself for the hell of it. I would to be funny, though. 1:38: We spot a group of young dudes: Andrew Miller, waiter; Noe Medina, orchard picker; Jesse Vanderwalker, Lowe’s employee; and Jason Reyes, nurse’s aid. How did you find out about The Free Ride? Andrew: We tried to pay for parking up at the beach a few days ago and it was full. They told every us there were shuttles, so I dropped everybody off and I took the shuttle over. What’s in the cooler? Jesse: Drinks. Noe: Dude, he means water. Just water. Have you been to Main Beach before? Jason: I don’t think so. Is that where we’re at? It is! What do you think of the Hamptons? Jesse: It’s definitely interesting, something different than where we usually are. Noe: There are a lot of wealthy people here. 2:17: After yet another trip to Main Beach,

we meet film producer Mac Cappuccino, 26. Is your last name really Cappuccino? Yes. Next question. Why are you hitching a Free Ride? Because my siblings are stupid and were assuming you could park in the beach parking lot, even though I told them it was full. They refused to listen to me. I happened to be the one driving, so I had to park the car in town. So you’re a little bitter? Not really. It means I get to spend some quiet time without them. Are there beers in your cooler? That’s not my cooler, but if it were, it wouldn’t have beers in it. You’re not allowed to have beers in coolers on the beach, so I wouldn’t consider doing that, ever. Vodka’s another story. What’s the biggest letdown about the Hamptons? I always thought I’d get to go to an Eyes Wide Shut– type party out here. Excuse me? Like, in the movie, when the rich people have a crazy sex party with masks on. Someone needs to point me in the right direction. I’ve even got the mask! 4:43: After topping off our tan, we snag a final lift. Lucky for us, Alex Esposito and James Mirras, cofounders of the Hamptons Free Ride, are on board to answer our questions. Where in the Hamptons can Free Rides be found? Alex: We’re in East Hampton, Southampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. Which town has the wildest riders? Alex: There’s a rowdier crowd in Montauk this time of year, for sure. What’s the strangest thing that’s happened to you while giving a Free Ride? James: I had someone give me a shoulder massage, but that was more awesome than weird. A surprising number of people have also asked me to dinner. Ever driven one of these babies on the beach? Alex: No, this thing would get about four feet on the beach. How’s your driving? Alex: Amazing. Especially when I’m going under 30.

Party Boy We’ve all met our share of rich kids, but this Gucci-loafered goofball belongs in the Hamptons Hall of Shame. Here, he recounts a few of his wildest nights wreaking havoc on the East End. Anonymously, of course! BY EDDIE ROCHE

Let’s get right to it. craziest night in the hamptons? Okay, once we were staying at my friend’s house, which is so big you can’t even see to the end of the property. My friend’s mom makes this famous ice tea and we decided to mix it with cases of vodka. Three days later, we were out of our minds. three days later? We never stopped drinking. One night we were dancing on the furniture and this other guy and I fell through the glass of the pool-house door. We got destroyed. We didn’t know what to do, so we grabbed a car and booked it to the [Redacted] hospital, where I wouldn’t even send my housekeeper. Go on… So we got to the hospital and asked them to help us. There was a bunch of us in the group, including some from big-name families in Europe. My friend who also got hurt is one of the best-looking people I know, and we thought our faces were going to be f***ed up because there was so much blood. Thank God I only had some scratches. Anyway, it turned out he was really messed up and had to have major stitches. The nurses wouldn’t let us go see him in the ER, so we were killing time in the waiting room and thought we’d have some fun. We were still all kind of wasted. What did you do for fun at a hospital? One guy put on a girl’s high heels, and we were all trying on each other’s clothes. It was crazy. The hospital wasn’t very busy, so we went to a supply room and took those hammers that they knock on your knee and some of the guys stole gowns and put them on. We started playing doctor. Next thing we know about six security guards came to escort us out. You don’t say! Well, we couldn’t just leave the poor guy inside, but the only person who was allowed in was a significant other or relative. I said I was the significant other, but they didn’t believe me. I decided to call someone who could either shut this place down or open it. It was, like, 6 in the morning and a very important person who was staying at the house picked up the phone. I told him I needed some help and got yelled at on the phone by him. “[Redacted], do you know what f***ing time it is?” I told him I wouldn’t wake them up if it wasn’t an emergency. Five minutes later, the hospital security came out and said we could come in again, but we were told we had to behave this time. We were there for hours, but we were doing runs back to the house to clean up the blood and the glass. We even convinced the car wash to open early to get rid of the blood in the car. That was a night. It sounds like something out of Risky Business. I wouldn’t know. I’ve never seen it. Anyway, I felt so bad for the guy who got hurt. I sent him a huge box of Tate’s Cookies. how drunk were you on a scale of 1–10? 197. okay! Were drugs involved? Nope. I don’t do that. Just booze. You’re a man about town. thoughts on the word “socialite”? You know what the word defines. You think fun, good-looking, social, party people. It’s still kind of silly. I’ve been in a bunch of cities and I’ve had people say they were the socialite of San Francisco or Tulsa, Oklahoma. I look at them and say, “Very nice to meet you, but you have to go away.” It’s always cheesy girls with bad boob jobs. I don’t think that’s what a socialite is. I also think there’s more to it than the party aspect. They feel a social responsibility and they have to justify the exciting life they’ve been given. How much do they do for the charities? I don’t know, but they act like it’s a chore. I have to go to this. I have to go to that. Really? I’m going for the open bar and the pretty people. Do you ever hang out with non-rich kids? Sure, why not? Some people come out here and play rich. They need to make every moment count, so they won’t waste time making friends with the cater waiter. They want to meet people who will invite them to the right parties. The people who actually have the money want things to be a mix to keep things interesting. The issue isn’t about the truly wealthy people not wanting to hang out with people who aren’t, it’s the people who wish they were wealthy who only want to hang with rich people.

You’ve got cash. Do you ever feel envious of people richer than you? I’ve never been envious of anybody. At times I’m offended with how people spend their money. Be grateful, have fun, throw it around and do whatever it is you want to do with it, but have some taste. Some people have such great taste and other people buy the tackiest things you’ve ever seen. The fun people are the ones I want to know. What are they wasting their money on? Some people acquire things out of habit. I see people get taken advantage of. I was on a well-known yacht recently at a dinner party and this lady I was talking to is one of the wealthiest ladies in the world. She told me she was hanging with [redacted], the artist, and she said she felt she should buy one of his pieces. I told her that she shouldn’t just buy a piece because she feels bad. I convinced her to commission something instead of just buying something because she can. Don’t just give it away. that’s good advice. If you can do more than others, make sure you are getting something back. What other shenanigans have you gotten into? There was this major media family I was staying with, and it was kind of fun but a little boring because the parents were there. We went out and I got bored because it wasn’t the most all-night rager night. I hate going to bed before sunrise. I couldn’t find my way to the house, so I called a friend and told him I was going to crash at his place. I drove there and I ended up driving over a log and parking in the sand. I went to sleep and the next morning my friend told me that there was a little bit of a problem. My car was stuck. We had to have a crane take it out and then a truck came to take it back to wherever it came from. I don’t even remember doing it. Once I saw it, though, I thought it looked like something I would do. Is there a hierarchy in your social circle? There’s people out here who don’t like the bankers. I certainly don’t. They’d rather hang out with the people who bus in from wherever, or who work at the bars, than the bankers. They’re cheesing it up with their aboveground Jacuzzis. What’s the problem with the bankers? They create a lot of traffic. They’re a lot of noise. They wear shiny shirts and pants that are too tight. They bring around hookers like it’s all right. Leave the hookers at home. As in leave them in Manhattan? A trunk! Manhattan! Who cares? Just don’t parade them around. The real Hamptonites miss that conservative vibe. That’s why I like Montauk. It’s still shacky and fun. It’s still Ralph Lauren fancy. Not Roberto Cavalli fancy. ouch! It’s wannabe bankers flaunting their expense accounts. So obnoxious! tell us more about you! Is it hard or easy to meet girls if you’re wealthy? They bring them in by the busload, but it’s hard to meet a quality girl. When you have a lot of money, you can’t expect to hold out for the same kind of person. That’s kind of annoying. Why do you want to date yourself? Find someone who turns you on and is willing to dedicate themselves to you with what they have. People use money as a guard to filter out the masses, but that’s not what it’s really about. There’s no issue getting laid, though, if that’s what you’re asking. Are you kind to your staff? Very! It’s so tacky and awful to see people mistreat their staff. The staff are part of your family. I’ll be at a restaurant with my driver eating sea bass and people think I’m spoiling him, but why wouldn’t I? He takes care of me. He’s gonna grow old with me. If I see people who aren’t nice to their staff, they aren’t the kind of people I want to know. What car would you never be seen in? Anybody who gets in a limousine should be shot. They’re so flashy. “Look at me!” Who cares? And there’s neon inside of them. You’re entitled to drive what you want, but they take up so much space and stop traffic to make a U-turn. It’s just awful. It’s like, why are you even here? Would you define yourself as a party boy? I really don’t mind that title. I know people half my age who can’t keep up with me. I’d rather be known as that than as a banker!

Some people come out here and play rich. They need to make every moment count, so they won’t waste time making friends with the cater waiter. They want to meet people who will invite them to the right parties.

CHIC Menace

“We’ve made it possible for the rich to enjoy inflatables again.”

CRYING FOUL

He doesn’t bite, but boy can he hiss. The Hamptons’ most stubbornly ubiquitous bird opens up about haters, fatherhood, and his sweet life in the shallow end.

First off, what’s with the publicist? An inflatable pool toy isn’t allowed representation? It’s just a little weird. you’re the first inanimate object we’ve ever interviewed who wouldn’t speak to us alone. I’ve been burned before is all I’m going to say. Perhaps you read that pun-filled excuse for a hit piece in The Wall Street Journal last summer? They thought they could deflate me, but since that article my sales have soared! Anyway, just ignore Ms. Otto. She’s really only here as a friend. Ask me anything you’d like. okay, well, it seems like you’re still literally everywhere in the Hamptons. Aren’t you a little over it at this point? What do you mean by that? that everywhere we go—every seated backyard barbecue, every alfresco benefit cocktail—we see you floating around with that same vacant stare. sometimes you’re alone, sometimes you’re with your partner… My wife? oh, sorry. yes, your wife. I know it’s difficult to tell without examining our valves. But in regards to our ubiquity, there isn’t much to tell you. We’ve been blessed with an exceptionally large herd, and people seem to like us. you’re like the schnabels of aquatic recreation! I’m not quite sure what you mean by that, but Julian is a close personal friend, so I’ll take it as a compliment. It is, sort of. We see you’re still sold out on Amazon… Four months and counting, yes. We have an authentic aspirational appeal that transcends the Hamptons. Also, we’re only $49.99 with free shipping. You New Yorkers are so jaded. You have no idea what real people want. Our team at CAA says that we haven’t even scratched the surface yet. We wouldn’t doubt it. But let’s back up a bit. I’m sensing some real hostility, which I don’t think is

called for. It’s not our fault if we’re quote-unquote “everywhere.” We’ve got the perfect combination of playfulness and panache, as our dear friend Joe Zee likes to say. Inviting us into one’s yard tells visitors that you know how to have fun in your pool, but a certain kind of not-middle-class fun. Is that what it says? As my dear friend Marjorie Gubelmann likes to say, we’ve made it possible for the rich to enjoy inflatables again, without shame. Did they ever enjoy them before? There was a brief vogue for alligators in the early ’80s, but we’re the first to legitimately blow up. Wanna make a billion dollars? Design an elegant water slide. You’ll have the folks on Further Lane beating down your door! thanks for the tip. you have your own Instagram hashtag, and the giant swan selfie is practically its own subgenre. Do you worry about a backlash? I have several hashtags, actually, none of which were made by me. I can’t help it if nubile rich girls in skimpy bikinis like to make their friends jealous. But how did you end up in the Hamptons, by the way? Aren’t you from china? Technically. My parents were colonials. I first entered society in the mid-aughts after some bored Southampton hostess bought my wife and I at Costco. We mate for life, you know. Doesn’t it get a bit tedious, though? All that lazing around? It doesn’t, actually. Seeing that look of childish glee on a person’s face the first time they encounter us keeps us afloat. so, what’s next for you guys? Right now we’re focused on the present and providing as much understated whimsy as we can. Every pool toy ends up mildewed and deflated in a pile behind the cabana, but we’ve had a good run and we’ve got thick skins. And once our patent expires in a couple years, who knows where we’ll land? There are millions of lesser pools left to colonize. Until then, we’ll wing it out here.

They thought they could def late me, but since that article my sales have soared!
