Dinner and a show!

READ ON! With Nicole Miller “I love summer because it gives me more time to read,” the designer says. “I never have a problem reading in a car, so I read on my way to the office and also out to the Hamptons. I enjoy sitting on my back porch reading a great book. Here are a few from my summer reading list.” Is There Still Sex in the City?, by Candace Bushnell “Set between the Upper East Side and a country enclave known as The Village, the book follows a cohort of female friends— Sassy, Kitty, Queenie, Tilda Tia,

Marilyn, and Candace—as they navigate the evermodernizing phenomena of midlife dating and relationships.” The Beekeeper of Aleppo, by Christy Lefteri “This unforgettable novel speaks to so much that is happening in the world today. It puts human faces on the Syrian war with the story of an immigrant beekeeper and his wife. It’s truly a touching tale.”

Rouge, by Richard Kirshenbaum “I went to Richard’s launch party and was so excited to read Rouge. The book gives readers a rare frontrow seat into the world of high society and business through the rivalry of two

beauty industry icons, by the master marketer and chronicler of the overmoneyed.” Beijing Payback, by Daniel Nieh “I love thrillers, especially for a beach read. This is a revenge thriller about a college basketball player who discovers shocking truths about his family in the wake of his father’s murder.” Hotbox, by Matt Lee and Ted Lee “I love food and everything that goes with it! This book is about the wild world of high-end catering, exposing the secrets of a food business few home cooks or restaurant chefs ever experience.”

Well, his name is Arsen Gurgov, and he’s the hairstylist famous for his ambush makeovers, as seen on the Today show. Gurgov is the go-to guy for customized, individual keratin hair treatments, and he does a detailed assessment of one’s cheveux before drumming up a unique serum that addresses one’s specific needs. It’s the best way to avoid beach-related frizz, which is why Gurgov sees clients in the Hamptons, as well as at his Upper East Side studio.

Q&A!

With NICOLAS RACHLINE In Sag Harbor, stop by the Monika Olko Gallery (95 Main Street) for “Liquified,” a new show by Nicolas Rachline of gorgeous Sagaponack shots. The Belgium-based longtime media exec and former EIC of Above has pivoted to photography, and the results are magnificent. How do you describe your aesthetic? There must always be an element of dream—literally—in my images. They come mostly from my childhood and are often a search for the memory of my deceased mother, who was extremely beautiful. My photographs must be both meaningful to me and as pleasing to the eye as possible. What lead you to photography? I edited a publication, Above magazine, from 2008 to 2013. It was a very personal project based entirely on environmental inspiration and protection. Artists such as Peter Beard, Tierney Gearon, Bettina Rheims, Gilles Bensimon, and many more contributed. They inspired me to start making my own images.

More than 170 guests graced this bayside farm, and ingredients grown on its property were used throughout the meal. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of an “Outstanding in the Field” dinner, the concept behind this traveling dining series was created in 1999 by chef and artist Jim Denevan. Its key feature includes a single long table in a magnificent abode that only exists for one particular day. Pretty magical, no?

SPARKLING SMILES! With Arden Gardell, co-founder of AlkaWhite

What inspired the creation of Alka-White? My father, Dr. Lewis Gross, DDS, started working on AlkaWhite in 2016 because he had begun to notice a disturbing trend among the patients in his Tribeca holistic dental clinic—severe sensitivity, thinning enamel, bad breath, inflamed gums, and more in the mouths of patients who actually had great hygiene and no cavities. He determined that the shared thread was damage from chronic and persistent exposure to oral acidity. I joined him about a year and a half into the research process. He’d developed an effective product but needed to find a way to better engage with the users, which is where I joined in. After a decade in hospitality and with toothsensitivity issues of my own, it was an easy choice to partner up. How did you develop the product? Much of the initial research took place in Dr. Gross’s downtown practice. This is where the idea was born and where, after extensive feedback and research, we conceived of the 5-Day Cleanse. Breaking the acid-erosion cycle is a key step to improving oral health, and it was in the experiences shared at the office that we realized we’d created something truly special. Alka-White naturally helps the gum line heal and the teeth to remineralize against sensitivity. Further, Alka-White helps seal the surface of your new smile so results last longer than normal! Who is this product especially good for? There are so many people who can benefit from Alka-White, but anyone with sensitive teeth is a prime candidate. That said, if you have bleeding gums or chronic bad breath, a “reset” of the oral environment can do wonders. Most important is to realize that each of us experiences periods of increased and potentially damaging acidity throughout our lives. Be it due to a change in diet, a juice cleanse, stress, or even medications, buffering against the side effects of oral acids is key to improving our overall health. For any of these scenarios, Dr. Gross and I recommend a 5-Day Cleanse every two to four months.

What inspired you to specialize in the beauty and wellness space?

I’ve always been involved in the beauty and wellness space throughout my career, working with clients like IT Cosmetics, Clarisonic, and Perricone. I love how beauty, wellness, and science are becoming so interconnected, and that being healthy is an important component of being beautiful.

Why do you think "wellness" and "self-care” have become so popular? I think it’s part of this movement about putting “you” first. As a business owner, that was something I had to come to terms with: I couldn’t be my best self for my husband, friends, family, teammates, clients, or anyone else if I wasn’t taking care of myself before anything else. People are catching on that making smart choices about health and wellness pays dividends in other aspects of your life.

Any beauty/wellness trend predictions? I keep waiting for someone to figure out hair thinning, hair loss, and graying hair.

To me, that’s the holy grail of aesthetics. I wish I could solve it; it’d be a huge brand or treatment if it actually works. I think we’re going to continue to see new uses for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, and I know there’s an exciting new treatment for cellulite on the horizon. Check back with me in 2020! In terms of trends, I think we are going to see more ways for women and men to be their best advocates in healthcare, beauty, and wellness, with more virtual ways to manage their treatments and health plans, as well as interact with healthcare professionals.

Open toe booties are a great shift from sandal to boot. Go for animal prints: snake, cheetah, and 3 leopard come in great silhouettes that don’t read as seasonal. Stick to neutral, light colors in 4 breathable fabrics. If it’s over 70 degrees still, blush, ivory, and sage are great choices that feel fall appropriate, too. Just no linen!

What’s in the pipeline for fall? We’re marking our five-year anniversary in September, with a big celebration in New York City with all our clients, media friends, and people who have really made Evolve possible over the years. I’m working on taking a moment to look around and really enjoy what we’ve built! Other than that, we’re going to continue our march toward world domination.

I agree! I’m obsessed.” Guests went home with numerous Moroccanoil goodies, as well as flowers from Venus ET Fleur. Some extended the evening with a nightcap in The Maidstone’s cozy lobby.

The evening began with the aforementioned beverages served on the lawn at dusk, followed by a vodka tasting and dinner in a private dining room upstairs. Belvedere Vodka U.S. brand ambassador Brian Stewart made a speech about the brand’s history— Did you know they needed the Polish government’s permission to use the Belvedere castle on their bottles?— extolling two new Single Estate Rye vodkas, Smogóry Forest and Lake Bartężek, which hail from western and northern Poland, respectively, and have distinctive taste profiles. Après tasting, guests like TK Wonder, Sophie Sumner, Krystal Bick, Athena Calderone, Mariah Strongin, Cynthia Rowley, Aliza Licht, Garrett Neff, Igee Okafor, Lydia Fenet, Gretchen Maull Berger, and Jenné Lombardo enjoyed a sumptuous three-course meal, which married elements of earth and water central to Belvedere’s Single Estate Rye vodkas. I have all this stuff going on,” she said. “But no! I wrote a book, and now the world is so much bigger than it was even last year. So the entire premise of this book is about you finding your own inspiration and going after your dreams in a big way. Don’t look from left to right to see what other people think; look within, because it’s all there within you, and once you realize that, you will be completely unstoppable.”

Here’s to the ladies who lunch! Nicole Miller hosted a luncheon at her Sag Harbor abode to celebrate her friend Candace Bushnell’s new book, Is There Still Sex in the City? The buzzy tome follows a new set of women going through the dating highs and lows during middle age, and was inspired by the author’s own experiences. It’s so close to home that one of the lead characters in the auto-fictional tale is named “Candace Bushnell.”

Bridget Healy, Ali Ehrlich, Mara Siegler, and Laura Brinker

The event welcomed some of the Hamptons most notable faces, including Anne Hearst, Patricia Duff, Countess Luann de Lesseps, Fern Mallis, Kelly Bensimon, Laura Durning, and Katherine LeFrak for a sit-down lunch from celebrity chef Kerry Heffernan, with wine courtesy of Nicole Miller Rosé. “I want to thank all of you for coming,” Bushnell said after a toast by Miller. “All of you are great friends, and some of you I’ve just met today! I’m thrilled that you guys are here. This is the first event for Is There Still Sex in the City?” One of the ladies interrupted, asking, “Is there?” “We all want to know,” said another. “Yes, but less!” Bushnell responded.

Sex

Appeal

Writer Candace Bushnell, coined the Dorothy Parker of our time, released her latest tome, Is There Still Sex in the City?, earlier this month to rave reviews. Over lunch at Nicole Miller’s North Haven abode, the Sag Harbor resident dishes on turning 60 and sets the record straight on how she really feels about not having children. BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH TURNER-HARTS

How did the book-launch lunch come about? Nicole brought it up because she’s amazing at entertaining. It’s like down to the smallest detail. I could never do that. Your new book is fiction, but is it in some ways an autobiography? No, not really. Some things in it are autobiographical, so that’s why we’re calling it “auto-fiction.” The characters are definitely fiction, because they are meant to be sort of any woman. There are lots of things in the book that happened to me, and there are things that happened to me that I gave to other characters. It’s all kind of mixed up. There could’ve been 20 characters…but you can’t have 20 characters in a book! What’s the gist of it? In some ways, it’s about a passage of time that happened to me in my fifties. I call it “middle-aged madness.” I got divorced, and my life changed. I wanted different things, and I didn’t even want to date. I had all these other girlfriends who were also getting divorced and in a time of transition. What happened after the “happily ever after”? No one talks about that! You may think that you’ve found your happily ever after, but it doesn’t mean that you’re going to have it forever. It requires you to reinvent yourself a little bit, which is actually a great thing. For a lot of people in their fifties or early sixties, a parent is going to die. Statistically, that is what’s going to happen. So on top of change, there are also just life passages, like loss. It makes it tricky. The book is about a group of women going through this passage together. Did you ever consider making this a Carrie Bradshaw story? Bringing Carrie to this age? No. I think that character is too big. Carrie Bradshaw

is in a tutu in a beer commercial now. That’s just not a real woman, and I mean that in the nicest way. She’s become like a superhero. So I think it would be hard. I would go back in time, maybe. But in a different form. The sexual tales of women in their fifties and sixties are not often discussed in our culture. Although the ladies of The Golden Girls had very active sex lives back in the ’80s! The Golden Girls seemed like they were 80! They had those women in their fifties acting really old. Women in their fifties now are not old. It’s a different group of women, and it’s a different time. They were Sex and the City women 20, 25 years ago. They had a career and a family. But it’s like, “Hey, there’s another chapter.” You draw inspiration from your friends. How do they react when their antics are revisited in your pages? I take stories from all different kinds of places, but

nobody has come up to me and said, “That’s so-andso.” What does happen is that people will come up to me and tell me something and say, “Hey, you should write about this.” Also, remember I’ve been working on this book for a couple of years, so when people ask me what I’m working on, I say, “I’m working on this book about mid-life, and it has these kind of characters in it.” People always say to me, “Oh, my God, that’s my sister,” and they’ll tell a story and ask me to use it. People always say, “You’ve never heard this story,” but I’m like, “Try me!” Do you like the promotional part of being an author? It’s a very different part of being an author. It has certainly changed so much. Now, [publishers] want you to be on Instagram. Some young writers have told me that a publisher is interested in their work, but they won’t publish them until they have 10,000 Instagram followers. That seems like a ridiculous

“if you’re a writer, chances are, you spend your time writing. Getting instagram followers is a separate job!” standard. If you’re a writer, chances are, you spend your time writing. Getting Instagram followers is a separate job! Some outlets reported recently that you’ve expressed regret over not having children. I never said that I wished I’d had kids. What I said was that when you get older, if you don’t have kids, you’re alone in a certain way that people who have kids are not. That does not mean that I regret not having children. It’s really about women being able to look at different choices. There are things that one gives up with each choice, and that’s just kind of the way life is. I do not regret not having children.

For me, it’s absolutely the right situation. I love my life, and I will continue to encourage women who feel like that’s the right thing for them. Both are viable choices, and we just need to accept that. One is not better than the other. Are you impressed with the younger generation of women? Yes! I live in New York and the women that I come across are together and confident. They’re aspirational, smart, they have a sense of humor... they kind of get it. Women are really, really good at figuring out what is right for themselves. At this age, the women I know who haven’t had children are

How do you and Candace know each other? We’ve known each other since the ’80s. We had the same circle of friends, and I think we met at a mutual friend’s wedding initially. Why did you decide to throw a lunch for her? I always love supporting women and especially my friends. We are both in Sag Harbor and see each other around frequently, so when her book was coming out I thought it would be the perfect place to have some of her friends and fans over for lunch. How did you approach the table settings? It’s summer, so I used a lot of my own bamboo accessories and a lot of pink. I had hot pink as an underlying accent and, of course, I served my rosé and pink lemonade. Your rosé has been a hit this summer. What kind of reaction have you been getting? It’s been amazing. Out of the blue, people approach me and tell me how much they like it. It’s made at Château Auguste and is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet Franc grapes. It’s vinified by Damien Landouar, the famous French winemaker of Château Gaby. It has done so well that we have big plans for next year. Have you had a chance to read Is There Still Sex in the City? What do you think? Yes, but only halfway through, and it’s a great read. I have read every one of Candace’s books and watched every episode of Sex in the City. I give her tremendous credit for always evolving but still staying true to herself. When you read Candace’s books, do you try to figure out who some of the fictional characters are based on? Yes, and sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes it’s not, but I think she combines elements of people sometimes, which always confuses everyone. Why do you think Sex and the City has resonated with people for so many years? It highlighted everyone’s struggle in New York in a lighthearted but poignant way. Everyone fell in love with the characters and identified with all of them in some small way.

happy with their choice and do not regret it. And the women I know who had children are also happy and do not regret it. Oddly, everyone’s okay! What else is coming down the pipeline for you? I’ll be working on the TV show [based on the book], and I have a couple other things lined up. But I have to do this book tour first. Do you enjoy being 60? I do. I really do. I do so many fun things, and I think it’s all about embracing it. There is only so much longer that someone can really do fun things, like make little videos on Instagram or put out books or make a TV show. I’m grateful.

troll

talk

Earlier this year, Moschino’s memorable game show–themed runway show in Milan featured Good Luck Trolls. The capsule collection, a partnership with Universal Brand Development, is finally available in time for the Trolls’ 60th anniversary. We got on the phone with creative director Jeremy Scott to talk about the dolls, why he put Hennessy Carolina (aka Cardi B’s sister) in the lookbook, and Moschino’s epic Dynasty-inspired Fall campaign. BY EDDIE ROCHE

Let’s talk about the Good Luck Trolls. How did this all come about? When I was thinking about the game show concept and working that out, I started thinking about all different kinds of things, such as shows like Press Your Luck and the noise and the Whammy. I thought, “I need a character.” We had been in touch with Universal and [SVP Global Design & Product Development] Stephanie Kraus; the whole team was a dream, and they had the Good Luck Trolls. I just thought it would make sense. It’s good luck because you want to win. Why did you decide to put Hennessy Carolina, Cardi B’s younger sister, in your lookbook? Hennessy came to my [Spring ’19] show in New York in her orange wig and wearing one of my multicolored outfits. She looked so sensational and I thought, “Oh, my God! This would be perfect!” The orange hair reminded me of the Trolls, and gave this whole attitude and spin because I feel like they have sort of a hippie connotation. I went with a whole Dynasty approach to

them with money and luxe, while keeping them playful. Hennessy seemed like the perfect embodiment of that. It’s very fab but colorful. Nothing hippie about it in that sense—it’s super contemporary. Did you know Hennessy? We started becoming friends because she came to the show, and she looked so adorable and I loved her personality. She’s a gorgeous little sweetheart. Then, we had dinner and started hanging out. I think it was Cardi B’s birthday, and Hennessy sat on my lap for most of the night. I love her, and I love her girlfriend. She’s a chic modern lesbian. You’ve seen her girlfriend [Michelle Diaz], right? She’s gorgeous, too. Why do you think the Trolls have endured for so long? They’re identifiable and clear, while at the same time being malleable. They evolved from being a wooden carved toy from a hippie commune to an emblem of the late ’60s, to then having an ’80s and ’90s rebirth within different parts of pop culture. Then, of course,

today with contemporary films, they’ve gone on to become actual characters with actual names within the whole Troll film franchise. It’s like Madonna. Trolls are able to be a part of different decades and different times while still being able to be emblematic within them but still always being completely uniquely yourself and recognizable in that way. Is there a Troll from the collection you connect with? I am very into the one in the gown on the pile of money. It’s so old Hollywood. Even just the whole idea, even though they’re not leprechauns, mixing all those references like that. I love that juxtaposition. You’ve just opened up a Moschino store on Madison Avenue. Why did you decide to open doors there? Well, uptown ladies love Moschino, too! I know that some of them will travel down to Soho and tromp around on the cobblestones, but some of them won’t! I wanted to make sure we were able to give all the ladies a location. You never know when you’re stranded uptown and you’re going to need a little Moschino pick-me-up. The Dynasty parody campaign starring Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, and Joan Smalls is so great. Tell us about it! I love Dynasty. It’s one of my favorite shows. I have all the DVDs. When I was thinking about the campaign, I naturally thought I would do another game show. It dawned on me—and this might sound a little arrogant— that I did the game show so well, I didn’t really know how I could do it any better. I had done everything the way I wanted it to be done. I thought, “What if I did something different with the decadence of the gowns and the jewels, that whole idea? What if I did an homage to Dynasty and soap operas?” A super over-the-top homage. Steven [Meisel] loved the idea, so we just went full-on for it. It was the most fun day of my life. It was such a distinct marker of the ’80s and fashion, and I will argue that [costume designer] Nolan Miller’s shoulder pads were what made people want to start wearing shoulder pads. He was incredible. It was just pure fandom. Loving the show growing up, still being such a fan of it, and getting to bring it to life with Steven was a dream come true. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life on that set. The girls were just going at it. I’m so glad people have responded so fondly and favorably to the campaign.

FALLForecast

ZADIG’s

ZEITGEIST

For Fall ’19, Zadig & Voltaire looked to the free-spirited sensibility of the ’90s. “Chic-destroyed” is how creative director Cecilia Bönström described her work backstage last year, when the collection was presented at the iconic New York club-turned-event-space, The Tunnel. Heeled cowboy boots were paired with relaxed tuxedos and jeans, suggesting a cool nonchalance. It's no wonder that the brand has opened countless boutiques all over the world in recent years. But what sparked the decision to set up shop in the Hamptons? The Daily Summer caught up with Christopher Tate, CEO of Zadig & Voltaire, to learn all about the brand’s change of scenery. When did Zadig first set up shop in the Hamptons? We have done installations the past few summers, along with special events. We felt it was time to establish our long-term home in this special community.

How did you decide on the location? I found the space while in town for an event. I loved that it was one of the spaces you encountered first as you drove into town, with a corner presence. We love that we can be a part of the welcome process to East Hampton. What are some of the most popular items that were flying off the shelves this summer? Our beautiful printed Japanese silk dresses, our new swim line, and our iconic featherweight cashmere, which is perfect for summer nights. Are there any Fall offerings currently at the East End store that would be great transitional pieces? So, so many! We always design products to be ready to wear now. Everything in the store is curated for the East Hampton experience. Will the Hamptons outpost be open after the summer season? Yes, we plan to be a part of the year-round community.

What was the concept for the Fall campaign shoot? Our Fall campaign was shot with Kate Moss. She perfectly represents the Zadig spirit, and has been a longtime friend of the brand. What are some of the major trends for Fall? Zadig has its own unique way of dressing and styling, with masculine and feminine styles that are incredibly elevated and chic. When paired and styled the right way, you will look like you walked off our runway show in New York or Paris. Our stylists in the store are there to help you create looks that will be perfect for you. When will the Fall collection hit shelves? It’s in stores now! What’s next for Zadig & Voltaire? We’ll show this season in Paris at The Ritz, and we have the must-be-at party of Paris Fashion Week, hosted by Kate Moss. In NYC, we’re hosting a special event with the NBA and The Shoe Surgeon [Dominic Ciambrone] to showcase our upcoming collaborations.

WRITEOn A look inside Clinton’s latest book, Tales From the Trails.

Publishing legend Michael Clinton is always developing a new creative project. His latest book, Tales From the Trails: Runners’ Stories That Inspire and Transform, focuses on one of his longtime passions—lacing up his sneakers and getting moving. BY ASHLEY BAKER How long have you been conceptualizing this book? When I created the goal to run seven marathons on seven continents, every time I would run, I would send out a dispatch or report back to a whole bunch of my family and friends about the experience. About the time I was on the third race, someone said, “You should compile this into a book!” You know me—right away I started thinking about how I’m going to do that. Seven marathons on seven continents…wow! Fewer than 1,000 people in the world have done that, so it’s a nice club to belong to. Obviously, the capstone is to run the marathon in Antarctica, which was an otherworldly experience, to say the least. What are some of the challenges of running in that environment? Well, it all depends on the weather. The year we ran, there was a lot of ice, mud, and water. There was a lot of concern that if there was a puddle somewhere, it could be up to a foot deep. I wore three pairs of socks, and then I lined my shoes with waterproof plastic. The year before, the weather was so bad that they had to run the race on the ship, which was boring, if you can imagine that. We had clamps, but we didn’t end up using them. You have to scrub your shoes and your clothes to make sure you’re not carrying any seeds or foreign object to disrupt the environment. It was very regulated. I think there were 86 runners that year. It sounds incredibly challenging. Did you know any of the other runners? I did this with my sister. When we were in Asia, we wanted to do something a little different than Tokyo or one of the other Asian cities, so we went into Mongolia and did a mountain marathon, which is so different than a road race. It was an experience I’d never had before—running at 14,000 feet. At one point, we were literally crawling up a mountain. We also did a race

in Moshi, Tanzania. It was the Kilimanjaro Marathon where you actually run to the mountain, not up the mountain. Brutally hot. There were some really neat experiences. So how did you put the book together? It ended up becoming a much fuller book because I wrote 14 stories and then I had 20 collaborators who wrote their own stories as well. The book is really a human-interest story about what running does to you mentally, spiritually. Not that all the stories are about running, per se. Who are some of your contributors? Mark Metric, the president of Saks Fifth Avenue; Jean Chatzky, the financial adviser and writer; George A. Hirsch, one of the founders of the New York City Marathon; and Lucy Danziger, the former editor of Self magazine. Each of them told their stories, and some of them were quite incredible—personal revelations on how they use running to deal with personal tragedy, personal growth, and as meditation. It ended up becoming really inspirational. That’s how the tagline came to be: “Runner’s Stories That Inspire and Transform”…and hey, running makes you healthy, too. One of the stories is about how someone overcame an alcohol addiction through running. One story came from a man I met in Mongolia who was struggling with his sexual identity; running helped him work through that. Good, inspirational stuff. The book is for runners, people who’d like to run, people who know runners, and people who like inspirational stories. What are the ways that running has been most transformative in your life? Well, I would say it’s my go-to therapy. It’s my decisionmaking process. It’s a form of moving meditation. It’s been my coping mechanism. It’s the physical act, but it’s all those other things, too. Many runners can relate to those things. I get clarity on problems and solutions. I’ll come back from a run and I’ll have four or five things in my head that I know I want to do, and I’ll sit down and get them down on paper. Are you a runner? I am. Your book is an inspiration, clearly! How many books have you done at this point? This is my 10th! Isn’t that crazy? I’m doing a small book tour this fall. And in true type-A fashion, I already have an idea for my next book.

“this book is for runners, people who’d like to run, people who know runners, and people who like inspirational stories.” Can you tell us anything about it? Well, I wrote that book The Globetrotter Diaries, which is sort of a personal memoir about travel; this is sort of a personal memoir about running around the world. And the next one is going to be a personal memoir about being in the publishing and media business— motivational things I’ve learned along the way. That’s great, because everyone in media needs some advice right about now! No kidding! Earlier this year, you announced your retirement from Hearst. What does that entail? I’m staying on until the end of 2020, but I’m transitioning out of the day-to-day and will work in a consultant advisory role. I’m getting a master’s degree at Columbia. I’ll be running marathons—I already have Maui lined up. I’m going to Peru and Ethiopia. One of the things I was writing about in the book was that life is a marathon, not a sprint. You set up your course, but at mile 18, something could happen. You kind of go with it and hope it all plays out. Life is good.

For Fall 2019, Sam Edelman invites you to step behind the hedges of one of America’s most legendary estates and enter a world of whimsy, irreverence, and timeless American elegance. We sat down with the legendary designer to hear all about it! What was your inspiration for Fall ’19? I’m most inspired by my muse, wife, and business co-founder Libby Edelman, who has a great sense of personal style and approach to fashion. Together, we designed and curated a collection that’s the epitome of timeless American elegance and laid-back luxury— reimagined with an unexpected twist and sense of humor. You chose Newport, Rhode Island, as the backdrop for your Fall ’19 campaign. What inspired that decision? For Fall ’19, I embraced the whimsy and irreverence of the Sam Edelman brand to tell a timeless story of love, discovery, and a life well lived. I chose Newport because it’s one of America’s most iconic destinations—a place steeped in history, filled with captivating characters, incredible architecture and design. I like the juxtaposition of our fashion-forward, on-trend collection shot in such a traditional and opulent setting. The campaign invites you to discover the world of Sam Edelman, a story that will continue to unfold.

This collection is where fashion meets function. Debuting this fall, you’ll find gorgeous puffers, sleek waterproof jackets, and ontrend weatherproof footwear—all perfect for the city or the slopes. You’ve had a lot of red carpet moments in 2019. Any favorites? Why do you think celebrities gravitate toward your footwear? Celebs have always loved and gravitated toward our product for its on-trend design and comfort. It started 10 years ago with the Kardashians, who wore and coveted our iconic Gigi thong sandal. Kate Upton has also been a longtime fan and friend of the brand, whose favorite Sam Edelman styles include our fun Hope stiletto mule. Most recently, Emily Blunt has been wearing our Yaro block-heel sandal on the red

The key to success for both Libby and myself has been consistency. We have been consistently able to tell a brand story that reflects our personal style and our understanding of fashion throughout the world for more than 40 years. We have told this through Esprit, Sam & Libby, and today we tell this story through Sam Edelman and Circus by Sam Edelman. My advice for aspiring designers and executives is to find a mentor with experience who can help channel your talents, who can share with you the mistakes they’ve made, and who will guide you through the process of achieving success. When you need to take a moment to recharge your creative energies, how do you do so? I developed a love for equestrian sports at age 12. The equestrian lifestyle and the sport of show jumping take tremendous discipline and talent. It’s another way for me to channel my energy. Family is at the core of my life. Being a devoted father and grandfather is my greatest joy and triumph. And because we’re a Hamptons-centric magazine— what is your favorite way to spend time out East? Having been both visitors and residents of the Hamptons, Libby and I love the air, the ocean, the farmstands, and, of course, the Hampton Classic Horse Show, which has become a big part of our life.

Inspired Sag Harbor’s own Chantel Waterbury uses her proven track record to work with some of the fashion world’s most popular influencers on their own collections via her company, INSPR. The charismatic entrepreneur tells THE DAILY SUMMER about her latest collab, and how she’s changing the way we shop.

Tell us about your professional background. I spent most of my career climbing the corporate ladder, working for many large retail corporations as a buyer and a merchant—at Target, Macy’s, Gap Inc., and LVMH—knowing that one day I would launch my own business. By the time I made that leap, the shift from in-store to online and the influence of social and mobile made me change how I approached building my own brand. So I launched my own brand, Chloe + Isabel, which was based off a direct-to-consumer model and was completely social. All of a sudden, I had people living in a small town selling $100,000 per year in jewelry, which isn’t something I’d see a jewelry brand do in one store in my previous life. Did that change your view of the business world? I realized that people look for an authentic connection. They don’t want to be marketed to. They want you to tell them the truth; they want to know you’re listening to them, and that you actually do things as a result of those conversations. It became important that anything I did going forward should be truly collaborative. What’s the gist of your company, INSPR? We celebrate the creator, the maker, the visionary who dreams of the brand she wants to build and the products she’d like to create. Then, we transform that vision into reality. Since launching last September, we’ve created limited-edition collections with Natalie Lim Suarez, Brittany Xavier, and Tessa Barton, and we’re launching a collection with Nicole Williams this month! Each collection is truly unique because it’s driven by the collaborator; we simply execute their vision as a business partner across product development, marketing, and merchandising. We’re about to expand that vision into supporting designers who are already building businesses, and

highlighting why we think their brands are exceptional. What made you decide to collaborate with Nicole Williams? We realized shortly after launching that one of the best ways to ensure that we’re selecting a creator who is inspiring to work with is by allowing our community to recommend them. While I am sure many people recognize Nicole as a model and star of the reality-TV series WAGS, and wife of pro athlete Larry English,

we became interested in working with her because of the incredible things we kept hearing about her from people within our community. From Nicole’s overwhelming support for her friends’ ventures, since we’re all about collaboration over competition, to her active role in animal rescue and cruelty organizations, to learning about how she is a prime example of a “self-made” woman who had to work hard to get to where she is. The first thing I noticed when I met

“we celebrate the creator, the maker, the Visionary who dreams of the brand she wants to build and the products she’D like to create. then, we transform that vision into reality.” Nicole was how kind, humble, and thoughtful she was while having extraordinary ambitions. I was surprised and impressed to see the range in her designs! Each look in her collection is inspired by, and named after, a place she either lived in or spent extensive time. Why is the company called INSPR? Because I wanted a daily reminder that our mission is to find ways to inspire people—whether through the people or brands that we highlight or work with to events and workshops that we create to educate and bring like-minded people together. Tell us about your success working with influencers. How are they moving product? Is this the future? While each collaboration is visually so incredibly different, the common thread is that they’re all creating something with the goal of sharing their creative vision and style with their communities, at accessible prices. The collections are largely shopped via social channels. I think the element that most reflects the future is the power of communities and their role in deciding how and where they want to discover fashion, while forcing transparency and authenticity to gain their loyalty. How do you choose your INSPR clients? We look for someone who we believe has a strong creative vision for their personal brand. We can’t give someone creative control for a period of time unless they know what to do with it. It’s also important they care about using their influence to create a positive impact, whether by educating others on being more socially responsible with their fashion decisions, or supporting a charity or a cause that has special personal meaning. I want to work with someone who is inspiring in a multitude of ways. Are influencers here to stay? I think influencers have always been and will always

be. They’re simply people who have influence because they have a large audience that is listening to them. The difference now is that you can create that for yourself versus trying to get “discovered” or knowing the right people. How did you collaborate with 21 Buttons this year? We held our first “Inspired: Beyond the Influence” workshop with them, which brought together creators, brands, and retailers to talk about what goes into building a personal and professional brand and business, and how all these worlds should collide to deliver authenticity and value. It was amazing. People shared stories that were raw and real, and they also delivered content that allowed people to take immediate action. You have a place in Sag Harbor. What do you love about the area? I can feel the history of Sag Harbor when I’m walking around the village there, from the harbor to what was once old watering holes of literary greats. I feel like Sag attracts a lot of artists, designers, musicians, writers, and chefs! There are amazing restaurants, antique shops, and local designer boutiques. I like that I feel like I’m supporting local business owners when I’m there. It’s a true year-round community. You come out East all year long. What are your favorite off-season activities? Fall is by far my favorite season out East! There’s the Hamptons International Film Festival; pumpkin and apple picking at Hank’s Pumpkintown or Seven Ponds Orchard; Wölffer Harvest Festival; and the Halloween parade in Sag Harbor. In winter, we go to the HarborFrost Festival in Sag Harbor, with incredible ice sculptures, fire dancers, and a fireworks show; and eating and drinking by the fire at Baron’s Cove. The

kids love sledding at Pierson High School. We also do several holiday tree-lighting events! In spring, we usually go to Topping Rose House for Easter brunch and an egg hunt; Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge for nature walks and bird feeding; and shell collecting on the beach. Rosé is popular in the Hamptons, but what can we find you drinking at 6 p.m. on a Saturday? Aperol Spritz has become my jam. I feel like after many sessions with my favorite mixologist friends, I have mastered the art of making one. Hint: It involves lemon rind! [The drink] feels so refreshing and is a great pickme-up. I mean, it’s practically nonalcoholic, right?

brightForecast Summer Break Hostin is taking a little time to enjoy Sag Harbor while The View is on hiatus this month.

A Sunny Day Out East

AVery    Sunny Outlook With ABC’s The View always making news, nobody deserves a break more than those opinionated co-hosts who get at it every day. Sunny Hostin is spending the rest of her summer in Sag Harbor, and she fills us in on how she’ll be filling her hard-earned days off. BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH TURNER-HARTS

What first brought you out East? It was about 20 years ago, and I heard about this hidden gem in the Hamptons from my friend Barbara [Smith], better known as B. Smith. She said she lived on a private beach. She was having an event at her restaurant on the water in Sag Harbor, and I decided at the last minute to take the Jitney here for the day with my mother. I have summered here every year since.

What do you love most about the area? I fell in love with Sag Harbor the first day I walked off that bus. I have always loved the water. Even though I really can’t swim well! I couldn’t believe that there was this special place with these calm waters. It’s hard to explain, but I felt at home. I’ve always felt safe here. What are your favorite things to do in the Hamptons? I spend my time in an enclave called SANS—Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Nineveh—it’s an area in Sag Harbor that was historically owned by AfricanAmerican families and is part of the National Register of Historic Places. These homes were owned by black families when home ownership was frowned upon and not allowed. I was welcomed so many years ago with open arms—especially by a wonderful gentleman named Bill Pickens, whose grandfather settled the area. It’s my happy place. My children have spent their summers here. It’s my respite. Will you and [co-host] Joy Behar be seeing each other while you’re out East? Absolutely! And now [co-host] Ana Navarro is part of the mix. And of course, Don Lemon and [his fiancé] Tim Malone.

Favorite dinner destination: I love to cook, so generally, my backyard. I also impose on Joy [Behar] and Don [Lemon]. But sometimes Don Lemon and The American Hotel, Lulu’s, or Tim Malone Ed’s Lobster Bar for lobster rolls. I love lobster! Ultimate dessert fix: An Old Fashioned or Manhattan. I’d rather drink my calories. Local décor resource: I like Fishers Home Furnishings in Sag. Social calendar: My favorite time is the SANS Labor Day party. It’s the best. BYOB and BYOF. Best DJ. Although Earth, Wind & Fire at David Zaslav’s house was truly a highlight last year. And Don and Tim’s engagement party this year—just wow. Farmer’s market must: I stop along the road every chance I get. It drives my hubby crazy. I buy hydrangeas. Fitness essential: Our house sits on a private beach in the SANS community. I walk three miles every morning, and sometimes I paddleboard. There’s absolutely nothing like it. I now do it with my children. They are amazing Joy Behar swimmers. Me? Not so much. Best sandy spot: Our beach. Garden envy: Joy’s hydrangeas are gorgeous. I have some envy. Beach read: I read constantly. I’m actually reading It’s Hot in the Hamptons—because why not? Necessary luxury: I can’t get enough of dusk at Wölffer estate. Rosé and cheese. It’s so beautiful. I just bought the most gorgeous dress at Joey Wölffer’s boutique in Sag Harbor. It’s everything. Road less traveled: My husband has a small boat, which he drives way too fast, but I love when he takes it out on the bay near dusk. Good friends, rosé, and water splashing on my face with my captain. Doesn’t get much better. Sunny’s refuge: The backyard of our house, which faces the bay and the beach. The most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.

PAWS UP

FULL SERVICE Bressler’s own pups Bunny and Poodle enjoy their time out East enjoying their mom's custom bone cookies.

Native New Yorker Dr. Cindy Bressler has treated pets from Manhattan’s UWS to Montauk for more than a decade. Spotting the need for round-the-clock vet support, she opened up Hamptons Canine Concierge, offering 24/7 on-call services for furry friends. Here’s the scoop on how Bressler’s passion for pets goes way back, and the innovative ways she continues to evolve the veterinary space. Think: private jets for pets. (Yes, really.) BY TANGIE SILVA

When did you first become interested in animals? I have always loved animals. I grew up with many different pets and knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 3 years old. What led you to decide that you wanted to be a veterinarian? I had an exotic pet when I was young, and she got sick. I took her to a veterinarian who told me that he didn’t treat exotic pets. She died later that afternoon while we were looking for another vet who would treat her. I knew right away that I would become an animal doctor who would treat all animals. How long have you been in Manhattan? I moved to Manhattan after graduating from Atlantic Veterinary College, in Canada, in 1994, and did an internship in small-animal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center on the Upper East Side.

When did you first go out to the Hamptons? During my college years, and after, I would come out with friends. After I became a veterinarian, I still summered out East but noticed that the local veterinary clinics closed early, and were also closed on weekends and holidays. A patient of mine was in Montauk and unfortunately got hit by a car. They had to travel all the way to Riverhead to treat him, but he died in transit. I decided to start seeing after-hours emergencies in the Hamptons during the summer months while I was there. I have everything in my car to treat a potential emergency or to stabilize a patient, and then transfer them safely. How do you split time between the city and Bridgehampton? I have an emergency summer house-call practice from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and I stay in Bridgehampton because it’s central. It’s easily accessible

to all towns, including Southampton, Montauk, and Sag Harbor. While I’m here, I have other doctors cover for me in Manhattan. We see both routine and emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. How did the idea for Hamptons Canine Concierge come about? I started it with Edward Alava from The Dog Store and Lisa Hartman, a celebrity dog trainer, after seeing the need for more personalized canine services in the Hamptons. We offer everything from grooming, petsitting, training, medical care, in-home hospitalization, massage, acupuncture, nutritional consults, beauty and wellness consults, transportation, event planning, private chefs, and other services. What are some of your favorite spots in the Hamptons? For my dogs, it’s Atlantic Beach, my backyard and pool, The Dog Store, Max-Bone Hamptons, Settlers Landing,

and Navy Road. For myself, it’s sitting in the lifeguard chair at night watching the moon over the ocean or watching the sunsets in Montauk, biking in Amagansett and Sagaponack, bonfires on the beach, Kelly B. boutique, Sen, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, Stoney Clover Lane, Blue One boutique, Joni’s Kitchen, and Harvest on Fort Pond. What is JetSet Vets, and how did you come up with the concept? After 10 years of being commissioned to fly on private jets with my clients, I created JetSet Vets, the world’s only private jet veterinary service where we provide in-flight medical care for sick pets who are flying and need to be transported. We can provide medical care anywhere in the world. We also have home hospitalization for dogs and cats called Cozy Care with my vet tech Karina Munoz; we’re the only ones offering it right now. Speaking of, how do you know if your dog is having an emergency and needs medical care?

It is important to learn what is normal for your dog, so that you will be able to identify the abnormal. Vital signs for dogs include heart rate, respiratory rate and breathing pattern, color of the gums and mucus membranes, body temperature, capillary refill time, pulse, and hydration status. What is a normal heart rate?

A dog’s normal heart rate depends on the size of the dog. Normal can range from 60 to 120 beats per minute. Smaller dogs have a higher normal rate. You can take your dog’s heart rate by placing your hand on the chest wall or by taking the pulse. It’s easy to locate the pulse on the inside of the inner thigh where the leg meets the body by placing your fingers there. What is a normal respiratory rate?

It should be 10 to 30 breaths per minute. If a dog is having difficulty breathing, you may see a slow or fast respiratory rate, loud gasping sounds, breathing with the mouth open, breathing with the abdominal cavity expanding, cheeks flapping, or nostrils flaring. Excessive prolonged panting is not normal.

How can you tell if they’re dehydrated?

The first way is to gently grab the skin with two fingers between the shoulder blades or on another area of the body. When you let go, it should bounce back to normal in a couple of seconds. If it takes longer or stays up, your dog is dehydrated and you should seek veterinary help. Another way to check is to see if your dog’s gums feel moist and slippery. If they’re dry, your pet may be dehydrated. As dogs get older, their skin may lose elasticity, making it a little more difficult to tell if they’re dehydrated. If you’re unsure, contact your vet.

You can take a dog’s rectal temperature by using a digital or glass thermometer with a lubricant. Normal temperature for a dog is 100–102.5 F [38–39.1 C]. You can tell a lot about blood circulation and oxygenation of the tissues. A healthy bright pink color indicates good circulation. Blue or purple means lack of oxygen. Pale pink or white indicate anemia (low red-blood-cell level), shock, or dehydration. Brown, brick red, orange, or yellow colors are also abnormal. You can check it by lifting the upper or lower lip and looking at the color of the gums and of the inside of lips. If you have a dog with pigmented lips, tongue, and gums [black gums], you can check the color of the other mucus membranes, for example, the inside of the vulva or the penis.

health wealth Curious about CBD’s many benefits? Julie Winter, founding partner and COO of CBD for Life, explains the wonder ingredient’s wellness and beauty domination.

sleep, which gives my body more time to repair itself. It also helps me control my sugar levels. I wake up feeling overall better using CBD. As much as I’m a fan of natural products, there was a time that if I couldn’t sleep, I’d take a Tylenol PM to help with sleep and anxiety, but that feeds into bad cycles. When I sleep well, wake up feeling good and I’m not anxious, I can really live my best life. What made you decide to branch out into beauty? When we first started working in CBD, the natural thing to do was go into pain and wellness. After taking tinctures and using topicals, I noticed other positive side effects, like the softening and clearing of my skin, especially since I’d suffered from rosacea. It seemed like a natural progression into skincare and skin health. How can CBD elevate beauty and wellness products? CBD is a phytocannabinoid, or plant-based, that helps heal skin conditions naturally by interacting with your own endocannabinoid system and bringing your body back into homeostasis. It is different than any other beauty product with synthetic or even other natural ingredients, because they’re not actually working with your endocannabinoid system. What’s your daily regimen? I use CBD for Life Face & Body Cleanser; it leaves my skin feeling clean without stripping the oils. CBD is an adaptogen, so it brings your body back into balance and regulates oil production. I also use a toner from our new line launching later this year, specifically engineered to calm skin and reduce redness. Then, I use both Pure CBD Face Cream and Eye Serum, and our Tinctures, 20 mg, morning and night. Why are wellness and self-care so popular? I think people realize that the most important thing you can do in this life is take care of yourself and your body. You’ll look your best and feel the most beautiful if you’re healthy from the inside out. Do you get out to the Hamptons much? We go to Montauk every year, usually in August or

“cbd is this amazing chemical compound that has no psychoactive effects. it makes people feel good, pretty much instantaneously.” September. We stay at the Surf Club; we love it there. My husband is from Long Island, so he has family in every part of the Hamptons! Any summer wellness tips for Hamptonites? Tinctures are great for hangovers, so make sure to pack your CBD for Life Tinctures. They help with nausea and anxiety. Also, a few Hamptons bars serve CBD mocktails and cocktails, so check those out. We have a CBD cocktail recipe coming out on August 26th; be on the lookout for it on our website! Any wellness recommendations for using CBD? A tincture a day keeps anxiety to a minimum. I recommend incorporating a tincture into your daily regimen for a calming effect. What’s the next big trend in beauty and wellness? CBD sleeping masks to calm your skin overnight, and deodorant to kill underarm bacteria. What’s launching next from CBD for Life? CBD for Life Vape Pens will be available soon!

Tell us how CBD for Life was first created. We created CBD for Life after my sister Beth Stavola, founding partner and CEO, learned about the wonderful healing properties of CBD. She infused CBD with essential oils to create a rub that helps manage her chronic back pain from spine scoliosis, a condition she suffered since her early teenage years. Beth felt immediate relief from applying the rub daily. As a wonderful side effect of using the rub, she noticed significant improvement, clearing, and softening of her skin. After months of extensive research, we met with a chemist to create our luxurious formulations. Two years later, CBD for Life was born! How does the Pain Relief Spray work, exactly? CBD is great in aiding in pain relief and reducing inflammation; while CBD is our main focus, we wanted to use lidocaine, a natural antiseptic that’s great for sore muscles and joint pain but can also be used for burns, scrapes, and bug bites. What is your process for developing new products? We do market research, see what’s out there, and listen to what clients are asking for. We’re also constantly staying on top of new research. We start at a concept phase and explore the best delivery, then start working with our chemist on formulations. We then look at performance over a three-month period, and move on to packaging. We also do compatibility testing to make sure the products’ efficacy remains intact. Finally, we plan our production calendar. It’s probably about a 6-to-8 month process to work on product development. Why do you think CBD has become so popular? Cannabis as a whole is more accepted. People aren’t looking at it as a bad habit or gateway drug. There’s much more understanding of the endocannabinoid system and how these plants are phytocannabinoids, a plant-based version of what your body makes and contains. CBD is this amazing chemical compound that has no psychoactive effects. It makes people feel good, pretty much instantaneously. Over time, people wake up with less pain and they sleep better. It’s long-lasting, not something that only works short-term. How has CBD changed your lifestyle? I have Type 1 diabetes and use CBD for deeper REM

SUMMER LOVING A collection of a few Ibiza-inspired looks available now.

After years of traveling the world, Marina Cocher has set up shop in Bridgehampton with a pop-up boutique located above Pierre’s. Here’s the scoop on her favorite picks from internationally inspired brands that you can shop right now.

on what colors and shapes work with your morphology. What’s the selection been like at your pop-up this summer? I have pieces for all ages, from beach covers-ups to hats to jewelry to bags. My best shoes are my wedges, which I have in seven colors. I even have a collection from Africa, with beautiful bags made out of crocodile, python jackets, and Pashmina scarves trimmed with ostrich feathers. Come in and check it all out! Are there any pieces that you think are particularly

great for transitioning from summer into fall weather? I have received my new collection of sweaters from Saint Tropez. Everybody loves them. I’m the only one in the U.S. who carries them. What are some of the brands you carry? I have brands from all over the world, but most of my brands are from Europe, such as Missoni and Versace. I also have new designers I don’t want to tell you about— you need to come in and discover them yourself. Which trend should Hamptonites try out, ASAP? Kimonos are very in right now. How long have you been hosting a pop-up in the Hamptons? It’s my fourth summer at Pierre’s in Bridgehampton. Last year, I was also in Montauk and Southampton, but Pierre’s is the best place to be. How did you choose Pierre’s for the pop-up location? [Owner] Pierre Weber is French, and I knew him from St. Barth’s. He knew about my fashion shows at Nikki Beach and Bagatelle. We decided to try a fashion show when I came to do a trunk show five years ago in Bridgehampton. I hired four beautiful models from Elite for the weekend, and it was a hit. You’ve continued hosting fashion shows at Pierre’s, in addition to running a pop-up. Tell us more. I have fashion shows every day at lunch from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. I feature around 10 different looks; I like to start with swimsuits and cover-ups, and then finish with beautiful dresses. You seem to travel so much. When are you at your Pierre’s pop-up, so we can come say bonjour? I’m at the pop-up every day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Mother’s Day weekend to Labor Day. Then, I’m back in St. Barth’s for the winter, starting in November. What kind of services does a customer get during a private appointment with you? Loko’s CEO, Vivek Jain, fills us in on the innovative, video-focused dating app.

Does the video format really cut to the chase of finding out who someone is? I think nothing does so more than meeting in person. However, video is the next best thing, and it’s a great way to bridge technology with the old-fashioned charm of meeting in real life. Video is as close to meeting in person as it gets, and it’s difficult to show yourself in a way that isn’t authentic to who you are—in particular compared to photos and text messages as a way of getting to know someone.

APP-EALING

What differentiates Loko from other dating apps? We are the first video-only dating app on the market, and our main goal is to get users off the app and meeting in real life. Video-only profiles are the basis of meeting people, and the only method to communicate is through a video chat—or what we call an “Elimidate.” The idea is to have a short video date before meeting in person to get the awkward first date out of the way, so when you do commit your time and money to the first face-to-face date, there’s a better chance it will end up being an enjoyable experience.

Has Loko had any success stories yet? We’re too young still, but we’re looking forward to the day we hear of our first wedding. We will soon be announcing a campaign in which we will be paying for the honeymoon of the first couple that meets on Loko and ends up getting married. Where does the name Loko come from? It’s Hawaiian, and it means “character” and “disposition.” We’re about personality more than anything else, so it really fits. It’s also an anagram for “look.” But the main reason is embracing the “crazy” connotation, which has to do with my personal story as to how I founded the app. I never really dated, as I married my first girlfriend and was with her for 15 years. So when I got into the dating world, it was in every way “crazy.” Everything had changed from what I remembered dating to be, and had moved away from the goal of a “hopeless romantic”-type encounter to being more centered around a hookup culture. What’s your dream date? It would involve the beach, a sunset, not too many people around, just me and my date, with the sounds of waves crashing in the background, and getting to know each other until the wee hours of the night!

Bonita DeWolf (left) and Tracey Holmes

It Takes Two

COUNTRY CHIC 42 Atlantic Avenue comes with a barn that features some chic rustic decor.

Bonita DeWolf and Tracey Holmes have tackled the Hamptons real estate scene as individuals and co-workers for years. The successful Corcoran duo talked to THE DAILY SUMMER about their shared approaches to the market, and how they spend their time off.

What are your specialties within the real estate landscape? Bonita DeWolf: I’ve worked from Southampton to Montauk, but my sweet spot is East Hampton and Amagansett. I’ve sold a number of ocean fronts in Amagansett over the years, both land and houses; last year, I was lucky enough to close on three ocean fronts and a number of rentals. I’m really fond of working at the beach for obvious reasons. Tracey Holmes: I’ve been selling residential for 20 years. For the past three years, I’ve been actively working with large corporate clients in both rentals and sales. In 2018, I brokered the largest commercial deal at Corcoran with another agent from the East Hampton office. I currently have the listing for the legendary Stuart’s Seafood Market in Amagansett with Randi Ball from our office. It’s a unique property that includes the 8,000-square-foot seafood shop and two separate houses that would make great staff housing for whomever purchases the property. What advice do you have for first-time buyers? DeWolf: Get to know the areas well. Don’t listen to your

friends—go out and see what you like. I’m very busy this year in Amagansett. I think that hamlet is super desirable right now. I’ve done three deals there already this year, one with Tracey. Holmes: Visit each of the villages and spend time getting to know what each has to offer. They’re all so different. I wrote a guide book about the Hamptons called The Hamptons Lifesaver. This year is my third edition, and I devote a chapter to each village and what to do there. Why are you partial to Amagansett? DeWolf: One of the appeals is for people who want a bit of a more relaxed lifestyle. The feeling there is a little looser than in Bridgehampton or Southampton,

where you might dress up a bit to go to lunch. In Amagansett, you can walk into the Hampton Chutney Co. with wet hair from the beach and flip-flops, and nobody cares. It’s a great escape from city life. How do you both unwind? DeWolf: I try to get on, or to, the water every day, even if it’s just a quick walk on the beach in the morning with my dog, Dutch. He was a rescue from ARF, which is a fabulous organization out here. One thing that’s great about being a real estate agent is that we have freedom to make our own schedules. We often work seven days a week, so it’s super important to take time to sit on the beach with a friend, share a bottle of rosé, and remember why you’re living here.

Holmes: Often? Always! We always work seven days a week! We both love to paddleboard. We both love golf. DeWolf: Speak for yourself, Tracey! Holmes: Okay! We both love boating with friends over to Shelter Island or Greenport for lunch, taking a swim, and just enjoying the salt air and the beautiful surroundings. Do you ever work together on projects? Holmes: All the time. We’ve been working together for the past five years. I was with another agency and Bonita enticed me to join Corcoran. DeWolf: Some listings we work on together, and some we do on our own. We just worked together with a lovely couple, friends of Tracey’s, who are buying an incredible house. We do it piece by piece. Holmes: It’s great to have someone as a backup at all times. Someone who knows you and knows your clients’ needs. It’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas around with. What would you say the Hamptons market is like right now? DeWolf: It’s a really exciting time to be a buyer, because there’s a lot of inventory to choose from, and sellers who are really motivated are meeting buyers’ prices. It’s an opportunity to get into this market— and people might have thought things were just too expensive before. Which markets are particularly buzzy? Holmes: The Springs. It has finally started to come into its own. For years people would say, “The Springs? Is that even in the Hamptons?” DeWolf: It’s really come into its own. It’s been a chance for people who are younger to not enter into their parents’ world of having a huge house and a mortgage. They can get a house, fix it up for a decent price, and get out there and enjoy themselves. Tracey has a great listing right now in The Springs under a million. Which properties are you excited about right now? DeWolf: I love this house I have at 42 Atlantic. It has the most amazing, beautiful barn, and it’s just waiting for someone who would want to use it. You can see the ocean from the street. Also, 7 Beach Plum is such a great house. It was built in 2004 and was never lived in, except for extremely brief periods of time, so when my buyer came around to it, he spent the past year sort of bringing it back to life. It’s an exciting house on the ocean with such privacy and great design. What’s your approach to client service? Holmes: We like to make sure we’re optimizing our clients’ time wisely—we don’t want to waste it. That requires a lot of prep work ahead of time and really getting to know them and their needs. How do you manage all their requests? DeWolf: I always have them send me a wish list. I tell them they’re not going to get it all, but at least it gives me an idea of what they’re thinking of. Maybe having a front porch is important to someone, or they want to be on the ocean and they know they absolutely can’t afford the ocean. Maybe we can get them across the street from the ocean and they can have a glimpse of it, and that can be a fraction of the price of the house that is actually on the beach. “Close to the beach” is a popular request. If a house doesn’t have a pool, they want there to be space for a pool so they can have it in the future. Everybody wants a pool, which is different than it used to be.

WELCOME HOME The palatial $19,995,000 spread includes two acres of lush land.

SO MUCH TO SEA When Mark Baron isn’t sailing around the world in his yacht, he is hard at work representing some of the most lavish properties in the Hamptons. The Daily Summer chatted with the Saunders & Associates realtor to get the full scoop on his eclectic career. BY ARIA DARCELLA

What brought you into the real estate biz? A few years later I was with my wife one morning, when things were quieter, and she said, “You have such a passion for real estate. Why don’t you get back into it?” So I got my license. Serendipity being what it is, I ended up working with one of the top brokers in the Hamptons at the time and became a partner with the broker; that was my first nine years in the industry. What happened next? My wife then reminded me I hadn’t taken a day off in almost nine years, and I owed her 435 days [of vacation]. So I took a short sabbatical and spent that time on a sailboat in the Caribbean for about 12 months before I got head-hunted again back to the Hamptons and joined another brokerage. After several years, I realized that Saunders & Associates could offer me and my clients something that nobody else seemed to be able to do—a level of commitment and concierge service that creates a smooth transaction that my clients are looking for.

Do you still follow what goes on in the art world? I’ll always have a passion for art, especially because most of my clients are collectors and most of the homes out here are considered to be some kind of art. They’re always adorned with the most amazing sculptures and paintings, and there is always a fascination and enjoyment to art for me.

all images courtesy

How long have you been in real estate? I’ve been involved in real estate for almost 16 years on the East End of Long Island, specifically in the Hamptons. But I really got my first taste of real estate when I was in my early twenties, in South Africa. I was a project manager building shopping centers, and was in charge of an entire architectural team—engineers, builders, and quantity surveyors. A couple of decades later, I got back into it in Bridgehampton. When did you leave South Africa? In my mid-twenties. I went to the Cayman Islands as a boat captain and scuba instructor. That’s how I met my wife. We ended up sailing and traveling for numerous years until we eventually made our way to Palm Beach, where we opened our first art gallery. We did so well, we decided to open a second location in Bridgehampton. We did the Hampton Classic Horse Show, and brought in massive sculptures from Africa. We sold out and ended up using that money for a deposit on our first house in Florida.

Here’s the scoop on 72 Foster Crossing (pictured), a tony Southampton property in Baron’s portfolio.

What’s the best thing about real estate in the Hamptons? I love the clients. I’m still an avid boater, and I enjoy yoga, so a lot of my clients and I enjoy the same things. A lot of my clients have yachts like I do. In fact, I just took my yacht all the way down to East Florida and back again; it was amazing how many clients I saw along the way. Tell us about your boat! I have a 52-foot yacht, where I spend my downtime. I tend to entertain clients on the yacht and show them waterfront properties, which is a great way to show properties. A key thing about living in the Hamptons is being able to enjoy boating and waterfront properties from the water because it’s a whole different sensibility to see it from that point of view. If you could sail anywhere in the world, where would you go? We’ve done a lot of sailing internationally. We’ve always enjoyed sailing in the Mediterranean. We’ve done some sailing around Greece and spent some time in Athens. I’d love to say I have some things left on my bucket list, but I’m enjoying the Hamptons thoroughly right now. In the winter months, I tend to go south to the Caribbean, and to the U.S. Virgin Islands. We had our boat out there for seven years, so we’ve sailed that area extensively. How do you handle seasickness? I’ve fortunately never suffered from seasickness. I actually enjoy the storms. I’m one of those people who gets a real rush from nature’s power. If you are diligent and cautious, it can be amazing. If you understand the power of the storms, rather than fear them, I actually look forward to some of them. How long have you been in the Hamptons, and what are your favorite things about being out East? I’ve been in the Hamptons for a little over 20 years. My

favorite restaurants are Provisions in Sag Harbor—they make my green juice pretty much daily—and Hampton Chutney Co. in Amagansett, where I drive to from Bridgehampton several times a week. Healthy living is great in the Hamptons—all the fresh farmstands, for my green juice, and the yoga instructors tend to be the best in the world. Other than not having a day off in nine years, have you made other sacrifices throughout your real estate career? I don’t see it as a sacrifice, to be honest. Every single day I go out there and am involved in the most beautiful real estate in the world, in a location I feel blessed to be a part of. I like to say that I wake up every morning an American and in the Hamptons, and I count my blessings. I don’t take it for granted. People say that if you do what you love, you’ll be successful at it. I think I’m a perfect example of that, and of living the American Dream. Having come [to the U.S.] as an immigrant and being an American now, says a lot about the American Dream still being alive. It’s always after you leave the Hamptons for a vacation and come back that you realize how incredible this place is—how special the beaches, restaurants, and people are. More importantly, from a business point of view, how spectacular our real estate market is.

How would you describe this stylish home’s architectural style? The house was built with the sensibility of its location and its lifestyle. It’s located in the estate area of Southampton. It was built with a lot of traditional architecture and decorating so that it would fit in with the lifestyle that really is quintessential Hamptons living. How so? It has a lot to do with more traditional spaces, and a level of privacy for the outdoor living spaces. For example, the wraparound porch with multiple entertaining spaces; the bedrooms with sitting rooms and their own private balconies all en suite; the open-plan kitchen with the eat-in area; the formal dining room, sunroom, and living room all open up onto the grounds with French doors. There’s also a more traditional library with dark wood and a fireplace, for year-round enjoyment. What’s the setting like? It’s on a flag lot, meaning it’s set back off the road, which gives it additional privacy, and it’s gated. Because it was built in 2002, it’s been able to establish a high level of maturity with the landscaping, high privets, and evergreen specimen trees, so it has an extremely private setting. It’s on an iconic street, Foster Crossing, one block from the ocean, and walking distance from the heart of the village, which has renowned restaurants, great retail, a movie theater, and a park, all extremely accessible. What makes this house so great for entertaining? An informal theater on the lower level! It’s a relaxed area with a big screen and a projector, so it’s away from the other entertaining spaces. The house is more about outdoor living and taking in the summer days, and that’s why it has an expansive covered porch that wraps around the entire outside of the rear of the house. There’s a built-in barbecue, grilling station, and a fire pit.

DREAM WEAVER If you’re a Montauk regular, you probably know Dylan Eckardt. These days, the self-proclaimed “Prince of Montauk” is building a career as a successful real estate broker at Nest Seekers. THE DAILY SUMMER interrupted his Friday afternoon surf session to talk his hometown’s dramatic evolution, living bicoastally, and more. BY Tangie silva How has Montauk changed over the years? When I was young, I was arrogant and thought this was my town. I was kind of bullying people who weren’t local. But the more I grew, the more I realized that these tourists coming here are buying houses from me. They’re buying lobsters from my father. They’re taking surf lesson from my brother. I thought, “Who am I to get in the way of someone’s dream?” I don’t see myself as a real estate agent. I see myself more as a dream maker, because people dream about owning a house in the Hamptons and I personally make it their reality. I get chills sometimes when I sell a house. I took a hit on my commission to sell a house to this family, but they had two little boys and walked to Ditch Plains to surf just like I did when I was a kid. Wow, a real estate agent who’s sentimental. They’re the people who are going to appreciate this place. I was actually sitting in my car and a blondhaired, blue-eyed kid who looked around 11 years old knocks on my window and asks, “Are you Dylan Eckardt?” I was like, “Yeah.” And he says, “I just want to tell you that you made my life. This the best day of my life! My dad is Lars.” Turns out, his dad was the one I sold the house to! I want people to experience a

beach town like I did—riding a bike to the beach, going to their favorite food truck. Mine’s the Ditch Witch! I get the “backdoor noodles.” When there’s a line of 100 people, I just go to the back door. They have run it for 25 years, and their parents ran it when my parents were there. How would you describe your approach to real estate? I speak to everyone the same. I was dealing with a billionaire yesterday, and today I’m going to show a $1 million dollar house. I love this s**t. I love real estate, and I’m the best at it. I lived in Malibu for about 10 years and saw L.A. real estate agents in expensive suits, driving Porches. I thought, “Why do I have to be a cookie-cutter agent?” As a kid, nobody ever says, “I want to be a real estate agent.” But I made this s**t f**king cool! Now, there are plenty of little kids that say, “I want to do what you do.” Tell us about the Malibu connection. I was living in Newport and had lived in Malibu, and Eddie Shapiro [Nest Seeker’s CEO] said, “Listen, Dylan, I got this couple [in Malibu] and they’ve got $35 million to spend. They want you. Go there!” Within 72 hours, I had three different showings. Many companies

thought I could only do beach or surf communities. Now I’m taking care of the people who took care of me, going town to town; it’s not just Montauk anymore. Every house people can’t sell, I can—unconventionally, eventually—sell it. People may not like me all the time, but I can close. What’s the biggest misconception about you? That I’m kind of an asshole, which is pretty spot-on. The worst thing is, the “Prince of Montauk” is different than Dylan Eckardt. I grew up in a hard life but turned it into something good. I’m helping people. People think I’m trying to sell my town, but I’m trying to keep my town alive. I am trying to prove that you don’t have to be a fisher or bartender in Montauk, there’s more. Now I’m having interviews in Vanity Fair… and The Daily Summer! I’ve come far. People haven’t seen anything yet. I’m young. I go out and get it. I’m not waiting for something to come to me. I believe I deserve everything and I’m going to work my ass off to get it, by any means necessary. I go to great lengths, from teaching clients how to surf, to bringing them to restaurants, to getting them reservations at my brother’s wife restaurant. Any means necessary, I make sure my clients are taken care of.
