celebrating

On a magnificent Friday night in August, a coterie of influencers from the Hamptons, New York City, and beyond descended upon Moby’s at East Hampton Point for an intimate dinner hosted by The Daily Summer celebrating Nuit Azur, the latest fragrance from Tory Burch. Charlotte Groeneveld, Johannes Huebl, Casey Fremont, Kate Nauta, Charlott Cordes, and Teddy Quinlivan were among those who arrived early to make the most of a sunset cocktail hour over Three Mile Harbor, complete with provisions such as Moby’s much-beloved margherita pizza and tuna tartare, as well as libations from Out East and Peroni. Samantha Angelo and her husband, Peter Ostrega, eschewed the traffic on Route 27 in favor of taking the local waterways, arriving in style on their new Hinckley picnic boat. Over dinner, guests enjoyed burrata with grilled peach and mint, baby lettuces, halibut with zucchini and summer squash, fusilli with arugula pesto, and olive oil cake while catching up on summer travel plans and simultaneously planning for the future—namely, New York Fashion Week.

WELLNESS Morning On a balmy Sunday, The Daily Summer welcomed a select group of VIPs and chicsters at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton for our first-ever Wellness Morning. Guests, including Casey Fremont, Stefanie Stein, and Gretchen Maull Berger, kicked things off by trying the latest flavors from Health-Ade Kombucha—which are even more delish when served with muddled fruit—and a special one-hour yoga and meditation session led by Elisabeth Halfpapp, Exhale Spa’s executive vice president of mind body programming. Wine and beer were provided by Out East and Peroni, with the latter taking the opportunity to show off its new collaboration with Martone Cycling Co.—a limited-edition red, white, and blue co-branded bicycle. Attendees relished gift bags full of products from Moroccanoil, M-61 Powerful Skincare by Bluemercury, Lune+Aster, and Exhale Spa.

dinner alfresco Samantha Angelo and Peter Ostrega

Between a new e-commerce shop, a capsule knitwear collection, and a serious fan in J.Lo, it’s safe to say that Sally LaPointe is having a moment. No wonder, then, that she graced the Hamptons for an evening, where the Eye Travels’ Samantha Angelo hosted an intimate dinner at her waterfront home in Sag Harbor in LaPointe’s honor. The festivities began with lemonade-themed bevvies, Out East rosé, and Peroni, while the evening’s musical guest, singer-songwriter Sofia D’Angelo, performed. Stylist Micaela Erlanger, designer Gretchen Maull Berger, filmmaker Julia Loomis, and photographer Keziban Barry were among the modern swans in attendance, while a few (literal) swans swam up to the edge of Angelo’s property to get in on the action (and admire the new boat belonging to the creative director and her husband, Peter Ostrega). After a Comparticatered dinner on the lawn consisting of mixed greens, plank-roasted salmon, seared steak with purple potatoes, and strawberry tarts, guests returned to the patio, and before long, a dance party was officially underway.

It’s FMA time! The Daily’s Fashion Media Awards will be gracing the Park Hyatt on September 6.

5

It’s NYFW… and that means a Tom Ford sighting! The Daily darling will be unveiling his new wares on September 5.

FOUR FALL ESSENTIALS

Culled from the shopping list of Pamela Schein Murphy, Founder + Editorial Director, The Select 7 2

1. Pomandère Turtleneck Sweater

3. Olaplex Shampoo and Conditioner

I love it when the weather starts to turn and I can dump the bikini, eat some pasta, and throw on a cozy sweater.

These promise to undo all of the damage summer has wreaked.

2. Jennifer Fisher’s EARRINGS They look heavy, but are light as air and add a glam edge to any outfit.

3

Favorite summer ’18 memories? The little moments—the impromptu late-night swim, my little boy Colby catching his first fish all by himself. What’s Shoshanna’s vibe for fall ‘18? The vibe is very city girl meets Montauk. Since fall starts hitting the stores in July, I try to incorporate fabrics and prints that you can wear in late summer and well into October. You will find lots of boho silhouettes in really rich colors as well as more structured pieces in modern plaids. What are you working on next? We are putting the final touches on a beach bag and hat collaboration for Swim 2019. I am also really excited about expanding my line into more sizes. Do you come out east in the fall? Fall is my favorite season in the Hamptons. I love taking my children apple and pumpkin picking, and we try to do Thanksgiving out here whenever we can. I love the crisp air and the quiet...and you can get a reservation at any restaurant you want!

4. Anine Bing's Stevie Tallboy BOOTS Perfect heel for walking, super-comfortable, and a great way to transition summer dresses into fall.

Bottoms Up! Special thanks to Out East and Peroni, whose libations were enjoyed at Moby’s during The Daily’s and Tory Burch’s party to celebrate her brand’s new fragrance, Nuit Azur. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

Socialite One: Are you only supposed to drink this Out East rosé out east? Because I’m loving it for the winter— maybe I can order a case for my place in Aspen… Socialite Two: What does “east” really mean? It’s all relative, no? Do it. Did you know that rosé has the fewest calories of all the wines? Socialite One: Fabulous. I'll double my order!

The Hamptons lifestyle can be very indulgent. How much Pilates do we need to combat weight gain? The more, the better! We have clients who come every day, but even as little as twice a week can make a huge difference when coupled with a healthy lifestyle. Don’t let your late-night party keep you from coming to Pilates the next day and you’ll fare well. The great thing about our approach to Pilates is that it improves biomechanics and muscle patterning, which means you’ll move better and access more muscles when going about your

Our sessions will never leave you with soreness or pain, but rather feeling so balanced that you’re more likely to stay active outside the studio. Where can we find you? We have two stunning locations in the Hamptons—one in East Hampton at 66 Newtown Lane and another in Water Mill at 760 Montauk Highway. We also offer private, duet, and in-home Pilates sessions, and we have select dates throughout the summer when our acupuncturist, Dr. Julie Von, will be available for sessions in East Hampton. Whitney’s

wisdom How long have you been coming out east? Ten years, and we bought this home five years ago. I’m definitely a New Yorker to the core—I never like to be too far away from a deli or a coffee shop—so I really wanted a place that was near Main Street in the Village of Southampton. In the morning, I can easily walk and get coffee and a bagel, then head straight to the beach. What was the concept for the home? Jessica Ayromloo designed the house for maximum personality, and Louis Follo helped us build it for maximum entertaining. Each room has a name and a theme. Our home is a classic Hamptons gambrel-barn style—except on steroids, as it goes over the tree line. Sorry, neighbors. How do you spend your downtime? One of the reasons I love being walking distance from Main Street is that guests can take full advantage of the town and entertain themselves. They always end up coming home with bags full of workout clothes from Bandier, and then I’ll make them SoulCycle at the Barn with me! On a work note, you started your career in media. What drew you to that field?

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

I began as an anchor/correspondent for CNN, ABC News, and CBS in New York. Honestly, journalism is really just getting paid to be intellectually curious and solve problems based on your curiosity. As a journalist, you bear witness to extreme events and then explain them to people who have never seen them. You therefore have to have the capacity to take big ideas and distill them down to manageable thoughts that become actionable for the masses. I then worked directly with President Bill Clinton as a media specialist for the Clinton Global Initiative. I finally ended up pivoting into the tech world after working for Match. com for five years as the company’s spokesperson. What was it like to work with Bill Clinton? He is a real visionary. He truly loves what he does and has an obsession—not a passion—for helping make this world a better place to live. I admire that he never takes himself too seriously! What were some of your wildest experiences at Match.com? One story really sticks out to me: This couple met on Match—but had lived for years, single, on the same street a few

blocks away from each other! I love this story because it shows you the power of technology and how it really does bring us together, even when we think we already are. I got to work for an awesome female CEO, Mandy Ginsberg, who now runs all of the Match group. She is a remarkable leader and a wonderful role model for me. Where do you keep your Emmys? Where every Emmy winner would: a storage closet behind a mannequin head that I used to show women on my talk show how to apply dry shampoo when it first came out. Tell us about Finery, your latest launch. What was the initial concept? Brooklyn [Decker] and I have been friends for years and came up with the idea when we read that women spend two years of their lives deciding what to wear and eight years shopping! We have Spotify to manage our music, TripIt to manage our travel, and Mint to manage our finances. Why wasn’t there an app to manage our wardrobes? That’s how Finery was created. How has it evolved over the course of the project? We recently launched Finery’s second version in June, and the new features available to our users are all a direct result of their early feedback! Now when you log in to the app, you can tap any one of your items and see styled inspo based on that piece. It’s so helpful when you wake up and have that “I have nothing to wear” feeling. Ideally, you’d wake up, open Finery—click on your favorite black blazer, for example, see styled looks, grab those items, and head on your way. We want to save you time and energy! We heard that you have quite a bold marketing strategy. I had my Smart car wrapped with Finery logos, and I drive it around all over the

Hamptons. As a female in a very male-dominated tech industry, I have an insane stamina for long hours of work. Even driving in Hamptons traffic needed to be maximized for marketing our company. Who were some of the early adopters using the service? Our early adopters include Chrissy Teigen, Lauren Santo Domingo, Christine Centenera, Bobbie Thomas, Rachel Zoe, Molly Sims, Kelly Wearstler, Leandra

Medine, Danielle Bernstein, and Emily Schuman. And how does the service work? Our users sign up with the email she shops with, and we put her shopping receipts to work to build out her online wardrobe automatically. She can then link individual shopping accounts to sync purchase history from specific stores and use our Pinterest-like browser extension to add in-store purchases that will complete her wardrobe. Our platform can then

use computer vision to give her styling inspiration for the items she already owns and help her shop more strategically for items that complete her wardrobe. Where do you hope to see it in the future? Finery’s long-term goals include refining our technology to dress our customers via artificial intelligence and create a global shared economy for your wardrobe. We want the entire life cycle of every clothing article and accessory you own to play out on our platform. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

ARTStar

Artist in

residence Whether he’s masterminding wall hangings, lighting, vases, or custom pieces, ceramist John Sheppard’s work is upping the style factor in some of the East End’s hautest houses. BY ASHLEY BAKER

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

You initially trained in graphic design. What led you to that field? When I was a teenager, I just loved magazines. I would read them cover to cover, collect them, study them, tear pages out to hang on my bedroom wall—I was hooked. The idea of taking stories, photographs, and illustrations and combining them into a smart visual package just seemed like magic. I decided that I wanted to be a magazine designer, but somehow I never realized that graphic design was a thing I could pursue. I went to school for journalism, taught myself design on the side, and basically just talked my way into design jobs until I actually had a decent portfolio. Eventually, I moved to New York and was able to work at some really interesting places, including New York, Travel + Leisure, The Wall Street Journal—and The Daily, of course! When and how did you discover ceramics? About seven or eight years ago, I realized I had let all of my hobbies fall by the wayside, and I definitely needed some sort of creative outlet. A good friend was taking pottery classes and they sounded like fun, so without giving it much thought I signed up and was immediately hooked. After spending all day staring at a computer screen, it was incredibly satisfying—and therapeutic—to quite literally get my hands dirty and create something tangible. Where did you study and develop your technique? I studied at Greenwich House Pottery in the West Village, which is this amazing studio that has been around for almost 100 years. It was a great place to start out, since they offered so much knowledge and so many resources that you just can’t get anywhere else in the city. I spent a few years there just exploring different ideas and developing some of the core techniques and forms that I still use today. I certainly didn’t go into it with the intention of turning it into a business, but after probably a dozen people said that I should be selling my work, I was like “You know what? Maybe they’re right.” What kinds of pieces do you make? I started with sculptural and decorative objects, vases, and vessels, and that’s still the core of my collection. Over the years, I’ve branched out into handmade tile and lighting, which is a really interesting design and engineering challenge.

What are some of the signatures of your technique? I tend to focus on geometric shapes with unusual surfaces. Everything starts as flat slabs of clay that I assemble, one facet at a time, and then apply different surface treatments and textures or glazing before firing. Since everything is entirely handmade, each piece has its own individual personality—I like that they don’t feel like they came out of a faraway factory. Perfection is actually not something I strive to achieve, and I often try to incorporate imperfection and irregularity as part of a design. In fact, I’ve been working recently on a series of wall hangings where I shatter, glaze, and then reassemble large tiles to create these really interesting, one-of-a-kind compositions. What are your main influences, and how do they play into your creative process? The natural world, architecture, and the urban landscape are my primary influences, but I can find inspiration pretty much anywhere. I’m always seeing things out in the world and asking myself “How can I make that in clay?” I’ve based my collections on everything from mathematical models to broken tile in the subways. Since I don’t have any formal art training, I’m actually terrible at sketching, so instead I snap tons of photos and keep a giant folder of inspiration images. Once I manage to fish an idea out of there, I’ll start making prototypes until I’m happy with the piece. That’s the nice thing about working in clay: If a piece isn’t turning out right, I can just toss it back into the bucket and try again later. Tell us about your studio in the Bronx... It’s large, sunny, and quiet—heaven! I had been working in a much smaller space in Chelsea but quickly outgrew it, so I set up shop in the South Bronx last winter. Now that I have so much more space, it’s been really interesting to see how I can push the scale of my work. The neighborhood is still very industrial, but there’s a small and growing community of artists and designers. Where are your pieces sold these days? Comerford Collection in Bridgehampton was one of the very first places to carry my work, and they have stuck with me ever since. In the city, I have work at Nest Interiors in Chelsea, and the Store at the Museum of Art and Design. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your work? Ceramics can be really unpredictable. The clay might be too wet or too dry, or the proportions in the glaze mixture might be slightly different, or the kiln may fire a little hotter or cooler. It forces you to just slow down and follow its lead sometimes. Sure, it’s nice when you need a little bit of Zen, but less nice when you’re up against a deadline. What would be a dream commission for you? Nearly all of my work these days ends up in private homes, but I’d love to do an installation in someplace more public, like a hotel or restaurant. It’s always fascinating to see how people interact with my pieces, so the more the merrier! Can you tell us about some of your most interesting commissions so far? I’m finishing a series of wall hangings for a residence in East Hampton, a big lighting project for a West Coast client, and a collaboration with some amazing furniture designers that will launch this fall. Stay tuned for more details. When you're not in the studio, what are you doing? I love to cook, even though I’m not necessarily the most skilled or adventurous chef. It actually reminds me a lot of ceramics, in that it’s physical, methodical, and creative—and very satisfying!

i've based my collections on everything from mathematical models to broken tile in the subways.

MAXIMUM CHIC For Max Bonbrest, co-founder of AYR, growing up on the East End was the launchpad for an extremely stylish life. BY ASHLEY BAKER FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

What was it like growing up in East Hampton? Idyllic! My family has been coming out to East Hampton since the ’70s, and so I had spent summers here as a kid. It was always my happy place. When my mom decided to give it a go year-round, I was thrilled. The novelty has never really worn off: People can live like this? All the time? I could ride my bike to school, I had a Labrador retriever—which would have dwarfed our NYC apartment—and I took lunch breaks at the beach. My father was still living in NYC at the time, so I had my fair share of museum weekends and infusions of culture, good food, and city life. I truly got the best of both worlds. How did you spend your free time as a kid? My family opened a restaurant in the ’80s, the Laundry, built by Norman Jaffe. It was a mecca for locals and visiting creatives. I grew up in the kitchen, and on the bocce court, eventually making my way to the service floor and behind the bar. I worked in those rooms from the time I was 14 and met so many wonderful characters over the years. It’s always been a special place, but I remember those times fondly—the regulars shuffling in every summer, moonlighting on holiday weekends as winter drew near. My grandfather and his posse started the artists and writers tournaments. There were always interesting characters around the fireplace or sitting at the bar. When I was in high school, my dad took it over, and I learned the ropes of restaurant life. It put a different spin on my perspective for hospitality. I think it also gave me a knack for connecting with people. The art of networking came in handy later on in my career, as I’m a naturally shy person otherwise. What did East End summers mean to you as a kid... and what do they mean to you now? Summers at the beach were always magical. We would set up camp as early as humanly possible and stay until the lifeguards left. The jetty at Georgica was our turf. The early evening, when the sun cools off and that mist comes off the sea, is still my favorite time at the beach. How did you end up in the fashion business? I grew up around the business. My mom was a model and artist, and my grandmother worked for Halston. When I graduated from college, I thought I would want to be on the other side of the lens—I’ve

always loved taking pictures. I worked for a bit in production, and one production assistant job led to an in-house position during Fashion Week. The rest was history—I was hooked! What’s the story behind AYR? After a decade or so in fashion PR, my best friend from college—now my co-founder and AYR’s CEO, Maggie Winter—was approached by Andy Dunn, who co-founded Bonobos, to concept a women’s line. She assembled a team, which included our creative director, Jac Cameron, and myself. I came onboard to help with branding and getting AYR off the ground. Six months later, in February 2014, AYR was born. How has the brand grown since its inception? About two years into our incubation at Bonobos,

we had the opportunity to spin out and make AYR a stand-alone company. We incorporated, took on capital, and are now majority founder-owned and growing! As a digitally native brand, we had spent the first two years really focusing on a vertically integrated model and our online flagship AYR.com. We were meeting our customer, but we were meeting her predominantly online. When we spun out, we saw the real need to meet her in person and tell her our story. We opened our first pop-up in December 2017 as a three-month test. A year and a half later, we decided to make it a permanent location. We just reopened our newly renovated SoHo flagship this winter, and retail expansion quickly followed with an Upper East Side pop-up and an L.A. pop-up. This is our second season in the Hamptons at AYR Beach House in Sag Harbor, and we just opened a Los Angeles location on Abbot Kinney in Venice. How do you manage to split your time these days? Our headquarters and studio are in Nolita, so I’m mostly there during the week and spend extended weekends working from home in East Hampton, where my better half lives. We’ve been fortunate enough to spend some quality time in California, too. All of our denim is made in L.A., and there is a definite industry shift in the West Coast direction. I love L.A.—it’s such a perfect antidote to Manhattan and integral to my East/ West balance. It reminds me of the East End in a lot of ways: Point Dume and Montauk are mirror images across the country. Why did you open an AYR boutique in Sag Harbor? I’ve always dreamed of bringing my business out east, and the brand really fits the lifestyle out here, so a beach outpost made easy sense for us. I wanted to bring our brand to life in a way that is inclusive of the local community, celebrating the style and magic of the East End while providing a choice that is unique and can’t be found everywhere. I especially love Sag Harbor because it has preserved its local integrity. You can still buy a cup of coffee and a knickknack from the five-and-dime, but there’s also a plethora of shops and style to choose from. We were able to incorporate both Hamptons style and community, using local artisans to fabricate our fixtures, which literally have beach sand in the bases, while staying true to our brand’s native New York identity. AYR has the perfect mix of city and beach vibes, and our girl can now find something to wear in both places.

We just started to sail, and I’m now a bay convert. Pull into dinner at Moby’s–the new East Hampton Point location is waterfront dining at its best–to catch the sunset. They also have live music on Sundays. LongHouse Reserve is 16 acres of Zen—an outdoor sculpture garden showcasing some of the best artists from around the world. Go early to THE crow’s Nest to take in the sunset, and stay late for the seafood pasta and wine by the fire pit. The sprawling lawn is perfect for kids, and the bayfront cabanas are ideal for couples and friends. You can’t beat the nostalgia of the Clam Bar, from the classic tunes to the casual seafood. Duryea’s is a beautiful spot for enjoying a bottle of rosé among friends. Deep Blue Vintage at Montauket has treasures that you can’t find anywhere else on the East End. Plan a visit to Melet Mercantile Outpost, which carries Bob Melet’s treasure trove of collector-worthy tees and denim. I visit Provisions in Sag Harbor for organic groceries, healthy juices, and bowls. Estia’s Little Kitchen is a go-to for breakfast tacos and blueberry pancakes. Arrive early to avoid the wait! But if you do end up waiting, enjoy an iced coffee in the garden. Urban Zen has amazing boho chic home goods and ethereal wrap dresses and jumpsuits. Grab a glass of wine or an aperitivo at TuttO IL GIORNO in the back. WÖlffer Wine Stand is a great place to hear live music. Don’t forget to shop Joey Wölffer’s vintage collection! I love AMAGANSETT SQUARE. Hit up Hampton Chutney for dosas, grab a coffee from Jack’s Stir Brew, stock up on dreamy beauty products from Botanica Bazaar, and visit Love Adorned for an eclectic mix of home and fashion finds. And stay for dinner at WÖlffer Kitchen!

The entire team at American Express is dedicated to challenging one another to create a better brand, offer better services, and curate better experiences for American Express Card Members. Working with our brand partners to offer Card Members exclusive access to curated moments in a market that is constantly growing and changing means I get to work on something different every day, and I am endlessly inspired by the creative partners that we work with at American Express. Why did you choose the Hamptons as the perfect place to highlight Platinum’s prowess in the wedding space? The Hamptons hold a special place in our hearts at American Express Platinum, with many of our Card Members, Collective Members and Platinum partners heading out east for the summer months. EMP Summer House in partnership with American Express, in particular, has returned for its second season this year—exclusively for Card Members—and is an excellent location for special events, delicious food, and great company. Our Card Members are at the center of everything we do, and we go where they go. What are some of the key Platinum benefits that Card Members are using as they plan their weddings? The Platinum Card is perfect for brides and grooms planning to book a lot of travel for their wedding, honeymoon, bachelor/bachelorette party, or all three! Platinum Card Members earn 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare and hotels, complimentary access to Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Club, and Priority Pass Select lounges to relax in before your flight, as well as a statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck to make the return from your destination wedding or honeymoon easy! For our Card Members working to get in shape and feel their best before the big day, membership with Platinum also provides access to a series of exclusive offers with SoulCycle. How do the Platinum card and its benefits aim to relieve stress and make the wedding-planning process so seamless? American Express Platinum has your back during all of life’s biggest moments, especially during your engagement. Platinum Card benefits help couples make the most out of their wedding purchases, with rewards and exclusive access to top hotels and restaurants across the globe. How did the partnership with Elettra Wiedemann come together? We try to tap the Collective as often as possible, and as a member of the Platinum Collective, Elettra Wiedemann was an obvious choice for this

event. With a focus on healthy, delicious recipes that cater to those who are on-the-go and often too busy to plan meals ahead of time, an Impatient Foodie dinner made the perfect meal for our busy wedding planners. We also worked with a few other members of our Collective to help bring the weekend to life. At Saturday’s “I Do Barbeque,” we served our delicious and refreshing “Platinum Heat” signature cocktail, which was created in collaboration with our Collective Members Bertha González Nieves of Casa Dragones, Tobin Ludwig of Hella Cocktail Co., and Viraj Puri of Gotham Greens. Our special guests also received a curated gift bag full of pre-wedding essentials from our Platinum Collective Members at Outdoor Voices, Impatient Foodie, Away, and Casa Dragones. Why did The Knot make such sense as a member of the Platinum Collective? We created our Platinum Collective a couple of years ago to bring together outside thinkers, creators, and innovators, like Kristen Maxwell Cooper, to help us ideate and curate incredible experiences for our Card Members and, in return, to offer them our support in reaching their business goals and objectives. The Knot specializes in bringing the fun and excitement back into wedding planning, ensuring that their readers have everything they need to enjoy the journey. At its core, American Express Platinum exists to help Card Members achieve their goals, and The Knot’s commitment to helping brides achieve their perfect wedding day aligns perfectly with our values. Any favorite moments from the weekend? Our “I Do Barbeque” on Saturday afternoon. Our guests made the most of the rainy weather and had the best time dancing to Platinum Squad Member and DJ Hannah Bronfman’s set, playing games by the pool, and celebrating with one another in a beautiful setting. What are you working on next? There are a lot of exciting moments and Card Member experiences on the horizon at American Express Platinum. Alongside our Platinum Card Creative Director Pharrell Williams, we just announced an expanded partnership and joint commitment to raise awareness and support for arts education and advocacy nationwide. As part of the collaboration, American Express Platinum and Pharrell will host the Yellow Ball, which will take place on Monday, September 10, at the Brooklyn Museum and benefit the Young Audiences Arts for Learning. Tickets are available for purchase at amex.co/yellow. We hope to see you there!

With Kristen Maxwell Cooper, The Knot Editor-in-Chief and Platinum Collective Member How long have you been with The Knot? I’ve been with The Knot for three and a half years now and served as editor-in-chief for the past year. As editor-in-chief, I’m focused on not only defining strategy and overseeing content creation across print, digital, social, and video, but also working closely with our marketing and product teams to ensure our expertise and advice comes through in our app. What do brides tend to cite as the most stressful aspects of planning a wedding? Paying for a wedding, without a doubt. My advice

FITNESS FIX Influencers posed before a SoulCycle workout.

before you start planning is to outline your priorities: If amazing food is a must-have, but you could live without elaborate flower installations, then put your money toward the catering. And don’t sweat the small stuff like linens and favors. How does wellness factor into the way that brides and grooms are planning and executing weddings? Today’s couples are looking at this time in their life as a moment to make healthy changes together that will set them up for success for the rest of their lives. That could be everything from adopting a new exercise routine to meditation. I also always recommend that couples create time during their week where wedding talk or planning is banned. Take that time to reconnect with your partner and remember why you’re even planning this celebration! Why does a partnership with American Express Platinum make so much sense for The Knot? Couples getting married today are definitely savvier when it comes to their finances and are looking for credit cards that offer them benefits and services that make sense for their lifestyle. I love that American Express Platinum’s initiative has always been to offer card members meaningful and one-of-a-kind experiences—it’s just what millennial couples want. And as a Platinum Collective Member, I actually get to help curate these unique experiences. Planning your wedding can be easy and stress-free when you have brands like Amex and The Knot behind you. How do couples benefit from the Platinum card? Couples, in particular, definitely benefit from the travel and hotel rewards. Platinum Card Members earn 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare and hotels, so booking for a destination wedding or honeymoon just got a lot more satisfying. American Express Platinum also just opened up a Shop Saks with Platinum benefit, offering up to $100 in statement credits annually, so shopping for accessories or other weddingrelated outfits at Saks is a no-brainer. What were some of your favorite moments from the weekend? Gathering everyone on the lawn to watch Father of the Bride on Friday evening. It was the perfect kickoff to the weekend, and seeing our guests relax and enjoy each other’s company following one of the most delicious dinners by Elettra Wiedemann, founder of Impatient Foodie and a fellow Platinum Collective Member, was truly heartwarming. Why are the Hamptons such an epicenter of wedding-related activities? From romantic beaches to rustic barn aesthetics to luxurious estates, the Hamptons have something for everyone when it comes to creating the perfect wedding weekend, shower, or bachelor/bachelorette parties. There is no limit to the number of options for bachelor and bachelorette activities during the summer months, be it a day at the beach or a group dinner at EMP Summer House in partnership with American Express. For native New Yorkers, the Hamptons offer a welcome escape from the city to relax, let loose, and fully enjoy the pre-wedding experience. What are your best tips for reducing wedding stress? Download The Knot app to help you organize everything from your guest list to your registry. From your engagement to your big day, The Knot offers tons of tips and tricks to cut costs, manage your time, and keep your checklist in order. After that, my advice would be to take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. Your engagement is such a magical time, and you shouldn’t allow the minutiae of planning a wedding to dull the excitement of getting married. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

Daniel Spelman and his partner, James Zimmerman, were tired of the limited looks Hamptons guys could wear to a party on the weekend, so they took matters into their own hands. Enter Bonvivants, a new collection that has already been embraced by the best-dressed gents on the East End. Zimmerman explains the phenomenon! BY EDDIE ROCHE

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

James, what’s your backstory? I was a model for a few years, and then I decided to start my own blog, James New York, because I wanted to creative-direct my own shoots. I started working with fashion photographers and reaching out to brands. I have an Instagram following, so a lot of brands were willing to work with me. It was a great creative outlet. What does the blog cover? I covered fashion shows, arts events, theater, dining—all of the things that make New York City great. Why did you find the need to create Bonvivants? We really made the clothes for ourselves. It started by going to parties in the Hamptons, and wishing we had better options. Dan and I both grew up wearing very preppy clothing. We thought we should update the look a little bit for 2018. A lot of the traditional stuff that’s out there was on the baggier side. We took what we liked to give it a fresh, fashionforward twist. The fit is tailored, but not too tight, with interesting details. A lot of the shirts feature emojis, which are needlepoint. Make us one of your polo shirts with the monkey emoji! I like that! [laughs] People are always giving us ideas.

What’s your best-selling emoji polo? The champagne bottle. People love it— especially in the Hamptons. How did the Hamptons influence the brand? This area is the spiritual home for the brand. We’re really inspired by our experiences out here. Dan has been going to the Hamptons since he was a kid, so the brand has a lot of nostalgia. Are the clothes designed exclusively for men? The line is general-neutral, but we approach design from a men’s perspective. But we do have female clients who buy the ready-to-wear, and our accessories are for everyone! “Bon vivant” is the French term for someone who is living the good life. What inspired you to name your collection after this phrase? Dan’s mom is a French teacher! What’s the line’s distribution? We sell at Blue One in Bridgehampton and Skinny Dip in Nantucket. We are also talking to stores in Palm Beach, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, and of course, you can shop on our website [bonvivantsny.com]. What’s the story behind the woman featured in your lookbook? She’s fabulous! Her name is Debra Rapoport, and she appeared in Advanced Style, a documentary about stylish senior citizens. We reached out to her via Instagram and told her we needed to shoot with her. Our concept for the lookbook was to capture family times in the Hamptons, and she represents this fairy godmother, grandmotherly figure. We paired her with [blogger] Igee Okafor, and we shot them playing tennis with fruit, having a tea party at the pool, and taking selfies in a sports car. What’s your dream for the brand? We’re doing very well in these small boutiques so that’s the strategy at this point. We have big dreams to have our own little store in the Hamptons someday.

amazing, and when I got back, I quit my job and started the company. One of my clients was a publicist for The Martha Stewart Show. So I got on the show, and the rest is history. As soon as that show aired, the phone was ringing off the hook. When I got pregnant with my first daughter, Charlie, I was excited, scared, nervous, confused. I wanted to celebrate, and I wanted to spend money on clothes that made me feel great, but I couldn’t find a [maternity] brand that was talking to me. After Charlie was born, I was more inspired than ever. I looked at her and thought, “I have an idea, and I’m going to make you really proud.” I started Hatch when she was about six months old. I built the website and started with 12 key pieces. The point of difference here is that the pieces can be worn before, during, and after [pregnancy]. They aren’t disposable. How’s business? We’re up 98 percent this year. We opened our first store in New York in October. We’re opening our second store at the Brentwood Country Mart in L.A. this fall, and we’re selling clothes, but we’re also inviting educators, doulas, lactation experts, and more to host seminars in our store. Hatch is becoming a community brand that’s uniting women in one place. I also launched Hatch Mama beauty back in January. It’s a nontoxic line of beauty products—lotions and potions—that women need during this time. How are you wearing Hatch at the beach? My community out here is no-fuss. I go to social events, but mostly very mellow stuff like barbeques. Hatch has lots of beautiful pieces that make you feel great, so I usually wear baggy pants with a T-shirt, a flowy dress…something super-easy and not too precious!

FAMILY TIES Ariane and Max Goldman with their daughters, Charlie and Georgie.

How long have you been frequenting the Hamptons? I have a love affair with the Hamptons that started when I was a child. I grew up in the city, and most of my friends’ families had homes out here. We would go to the South of France in the summer, so we never had a second home out east, but I would stay with my friends, and as I got older, my social world became very relevant out here. After graduating college, I rented houses with friends, and eventually, after I met my husband—whom I picked up at the Stephen Talkhouse—we decided to buy our first place together at the beach. It brings so much peace and harmony. What’s the story with your East Hampton house? We have an amazing property in the Northwest Woods that we nicknamed Shangri-La, as it feels like a Japanese garden. It has three ponds with koi fish, we have a tree house…the property just makes us sing. It makes you feel like you’re completely far away, but we’re 12 minutes from the beach. The best part about being in the woods is that it actually stays green all year. In the fall and winter, when the fireplace is going, you feel like you’re upstate, so we kind of get that vibe, too. It’s the best of both worlds. How did you find your home? We were looking for something with soul and good bones—nothing that was too turnkey. There are a lot of beautiful homes out here, but a lot of them start to look a lot alike. We were looking for something unique that inspired us. We were 0 for 20 on the day we went out with our realtor, and we went to dinner with him and his wife at Nick & Toni’s. She said, “Why don’t you take them to that house in the woods?” He said, “Well, it’s out of their budget,” but he took us the next morning. My husband, Max, and I put in an offer that day. It was a soft market due to the economy back in ’08, so we could stretch for it. It’s going to be our family home forever. How do you split your time out east with your time in the city? I really try and balance being a Hamptons mom and a working woman, and I kind of fail at both [laughs]. Usually, I leave for East Hampton on Thursday night and come back Tuesday morning. In August, I put the kids in camp to give them a routine, and my husband, our lovely nanny, and I switch off so they have a grounded home while we ensure that our work gets done. It’s not the smoothest thing, but we’re making it work. How did you come up with Hatch? When I met Max and got engaged, the bridesmaid-dress market was pretty empty. 27 Dresses had just come out, and I decided that I was going to make my bridesmaid dresses. My first foray into entrepreneurship was creating the Twobirds bridesmaid dress: one dress that wraps 15 different ways and is onesize-fits-all. We went to Jamaica, got married, the reaction down the aisle was

RING, RING! BRIDGEHAMPTON

Hello! Can you help me with a reservation? Sure! For the hotel or the restaurant? Hotel. I’d like to book a room for Saturday, August 11… We are fully accommodated on Saturday. What about August 25? On weekends, we do have a three-night minimum. Oh! Why? Most hotels out here have that policy in the summer months. How much would it be? We have our cottage king room for Saturday, Sunday and Monday for $7,238.88. Are you kidding? The rate for Saturday is $2,495, and Sunday and Monday are $1,995 each. That’s more than the monthly mortgage on my apartment. Those are the cheapest rooms available. Do they come with an ocean view? No. I have a pit bull. Do you allow dogs? We do. Just curious—what would that same room cost me in the off-season? The rates do go down. The November rate is $545 per night. In November? Holy cannoli. Are the beds made of gold? [Pause] We don’t have a three-night minimum in the off season. Sorry, but this is way out of my budget. We do recommend Baron’s Cove.

EAST HAMPTON

Hi! I’m looking for a room for Saturday, August 11… Unfortunately, we don’t have any availability. What about August 25? At the moment we do, but there is a two-night minimum. We have a cozy room with a queen-size bed at a rate of $775. For two nights? Per night. Whoa! Is there an ocean view? There isn’t, but we’re in East Hampton, so the ocean is quite close. Do people think these prices are outrageous? People do complain, but I think they’re reasonable. What’s the hotel like? It has amenities such as a garden area and a pool. We offer beach towels and chairs. Are dogs welcome? We are dog-friendly. At $775 a night, does the room come with Beyoncé tickets? [Laughs] You can try

the [redacted] hotel…though they don’t have a pool!

SAG HARBOR

Can you tell me how much a room would cost for Saturday, August 25? There’s a minimum-stay requirement— three nights. We can do a king room for $949 on Friday and Saturday, and $699 on Sunday. The total with tax for the three nights is $3,039.94. What? That’s more than the monthly rent of a one-bedroom in Williamsburg. [Laughs] Understood. Why is it so expensive? It’s the Hamptons! Does that come with a Ralph Lauren sighting? It might. Is there a pool? There is! Let me talk to my friends about this. There would be six of us in the room. Is that allowed? No. Not with a king-size bed. You might want to try Montauk.

SHELTER ISLAND

What’s the room rate for August 11? Our room rates range from $595 to $695. Does the room have an ocean view? It does not. We are three minutes from the beach. Is there a free breakfast? We serve complimentary croissants and pastries in the morning, with tea, orange juice, and coffee. We are completely booked on August 11. What about August 25? We are booked this date as well. We do have some availability at our sister property. It’s a smaller guesthouse. All king rooms. You have full access to the main property as well as the croissants in the morning. That’s a pricey croissant! Is Wi-Fi free? Oh, yeah! Why is it so expensive? Because it’s Shelter Island during the summer. Can you recommend a cheaper area? Not really. That’s harder to find. I would look into places on the

North Fork. Greenport is accessible to Shelter Island on the ferry, but even that is getting pricier. If budget is an issue, anything on the Hamptons on a weekend is going to be pretty expensive or booked. What about something called Hampton Bays? It’s about 40 minutes from here. It’s not on the Atlantic. It’s on an inlet. And it’s still going to be pretty pricey.

MONTAUK

Can you tell me when your next summer availability is? We have something on the 25th. How much is it for the night? We have a two-night minimum. How many people would it be? Six. We do have a room with two double beds, if you wanted to do that. We can bring in a cot, but I’m telling you, it’s not very comfortable. The room is $397 plus tax. Divided by six people, that’s not so bad! A room with two double beds doesn’t really fit six people. I’ve seen it done before, but I just don’t think it’s going to be very comfortable. What’s Montauk like? It’s a beach getaway. It depends on where you stay. Our place is a family-friendly escape. It’s in the middle of everything. It has a peaceful vibe. We’re kinda looking to party. Okay. You’ll be by all the bars. There might be other options for party motels. You said the town is family-friendly, but we’re six single guys looking for girls. Is this the place to come? Montauk!? Definitely. You’ll find them. You’ll definitely find the party scene on the weekends. And the girls aren’t snotty? Not all of them. We get a mix!

Meanwhile in SEASIDE, NEW JERSEY…

Hello! I’ve heard great things about your hotel. How much is a room for August 25? How many people? Just two. It’s $149 plus tax. Great! Is there an ocean view? You can’t see the ocean because there is a building in front of us. But can you smell the ocean? Yeah. My friend was telling me that Seaside is the Hamptons of New Jersey. What do you think? Yeah. [Hangs up phone.]
