3 Style Tips eek! for this Chic W

1.) Focus on Your Footwear: “Wear shoes you can walk in or are willing to suffer in, it’s a long day!”

From the Runway

! d a o R e h To T

2.) Dress the Part: “In the morning I love wearing a look that suits my day ahead. If it’s a show early in the morning, I will dress more classically: a men’s button down, jeans, and a pump or a simple dress and boots. For an evening show, I tend to wear leather pants with a knit top or a mini skirt with a great heel.” 3.) Always Represent: “If a designer is kind enough to invite you to preview their new collection, why not honor them by wearing a piece from a past collection?”

Stylist Danielle Nachmani was recruited by the Mercedes-Benz team this Fashion Week to create a special display for the Fall 2013 season. Pairing several key pieces from a multitude of designers, she’s concocting day and evening looks that reflect the spirit of the auto company’s iconic new models. Between countless showroom pulls and top-secret collab consultations, we tracked Danielle Nachmani down to get the full scoop! When did you know you wanted to be a stylist? I don’t remember a time where I didn’t! However, when I was 11 years old I had the opportunity to be backstage at a runway show and I definitely fell in love with the insanity of it all. How did you get started? I started interning in fashion while still in high school, which lead to five years as an assistant. I was lucky enough to have a very special red carpet moment at the Met Ball in 2009 that kick-started my career. Have you been to Fashion Week before? Front row or backstage styling? I’ve been fortunate enough to be on both sides—front row and backstage. But I definitely feel most at home backstage. What was your favorite show of all time? Lanvin Spring 2012; it was my first show in Paris. It completely changed the way I felt about runway presentations. It made me see how moving a show could actually be. How did your collaboration with Mercedes-Benz come about? When Mercedes-Benz reached out to me to style their mannequins in the House of Mercedes-Benz car display this season, I was immediately intrigued due to the strong tie Mercedes-Benz has with the fashion world. The display, along with the looks I am pulling for each mannequin, will demonstrate the juxtaposition of “ready to wear” and “haute couture” in the luxury automobile world. The all-new

2014 CLA-Class has a sporty, avant-garde style approach that appeals to the young at heart. Approachably priced, this vehicle represents the “ready-to-wear” collections on the runways at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The SLS AMG Black Series features high-quality materials and is the epitome of a high-end luxury vehicle—it is haute couture. Some looks will have a daytime feel, however, it’s all about showcasing the different approaches designers take to their collection similar to the variety of styles Mercedes-Benz offers. Which designers did you work with? There are so many designers presenting now, and I felt it was important to showcase a really nice mix of what’s out there. To name a few, Richard Chai, ICB by Prabal Gurung, Donna Karan, Jill Stuart, J. Mendel… What’s your favorite model? A 1955 190SL—navy with tan interior. It was a prop on a shoot I once did, and I was lucky enough to take it around the block. It’s still definitely my dream car. So what’s on your driving playlist? I do the majority of my driving during the summer, so there is a certain variety to the music. I like to drive to The Beach Boys, Gary Clark Jr., Jay Z, and Hall & Oates. What’s your biggest pet peeve when behind the wheel? If you ask anyone in my life they would say I’m a pretty aggressive and fast driver. I tend to be impatient with slower people on the road.

A mega MOMENT

WITH CARINE ROITFELD This month, her editorials will appear worldwide in all 26 editions of Harper’s Bazaar. That’s 11.3 million readers, people. Vive La Carine! Bazaar gets the first dose of Carine as global fashion director—16 pages worth!—in the March issue. Are you happy with the outcome? I hope it’s going to be a success—it’s the very first one, and some people may be expecting a huge thing. It’s very, very simple and sharp. Has your new gig changed your rapport with Stephen Gan? It’s so good to have a friend in this difficult business. Stephen has always protected me from all business problems. So I’m able to make my dreams happen. We will have a cocktail sometimes. He doesn’t talk about the drama. What’s it like working with Glenda? We’re not friends; we’ve never been friends. But we’ve crossed paths more and more— at shows, Stephen wants Glenda on one side and me on the other. It’s not easy for an editor-inchief to have someone come in and suddenly have 16 pages in their magazine, so I hope everyone stays happy. I’ve

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

never tried to steal anything from anyone. How are you juggling Bazaar and CR Fashion Book? At CR, I’m totally free to be all my craziness, and we’re only talking to a few people with the magazine—15,000 copies. CR and Bazaar are totally different worlds. I work with new photographers and hair and makeup people in CR, and then it’s a dream for them to get featured in Bazaar. That’s what happened with our hairstylist: he worked with me on CR, and then I had him come work with me on my first portfolio for Bazaar. That’s a gift! Have you spent much time at the Hearst Tower? I’ve never been to the cafeteria! I knew of the [Hearst] building, of course, but I never had a reason to go inside when I was working at Condé Nast for 10 years. Where are you hanging out around town lately? I’m still staying at The Mark; I like to live the hotel life! I’m very faithful to places like Mr. Chow, and I think the Four Seasons bar is the most beautiful one in town. And I just tried the most delicious restaurant, Marea: their warm sea urchin on toast is the most sensual food I’ve ever eaten in my entire life.

Director, 2005-2008 Where he is now: “I am the editor in chief of SCENE magazine. I am also writing a book that will scandalize the style world and which my agent, the amazing David Kuhn, will believe is real when he has it in his hand, or in his email in-box.” Weirdest Daily assignment: “Interviewing Valentino’s large family of pugs. They were utterly charming, insightful, and funny, like Mr. Valentino himself (who I also interviewed over fancy tea in his New York apartment.)” What do you miss the most about The Daily? “Brandusa’s unique and melodic accent and using the word ‘chic’ a hundred times per hour.”

A VERY LITERAL MOMENT WITH

KARL LAGERFELD… The Daily is about to turn 10, Karl. What should we ask for? Two hundred subscriptions! But we’re already free! Oh, good! Any another ideas? It depends on who is getting the gift. Gifts are not usually for companies. Good point! You don’t give a gift to a magazine! You gift the gift to the editors. No arguments here!

A birthday wish for The Daily, please! May you last forever and never age a day! (It’s certainly worked for Moi.) What would your life be like without us around? The Daily is where I get the latest about Moi’s close personal friends—the hot designers, the fabulous fashion photogs, the haute stylists, and Moi’s fellow supermodels! Without The Daily, I’d be forced to call up each of these people individually to find out who was doing what to whom.

so...what are you getting us?

Is In Session At the ripe old age of 20, the Midwest’s sexiest export has a stack of European contracts, her very own cookie line, the haircut of the year, and a deal with Mercedes-Benz. Did we mention she wants to go to Harvard? BY EDDIE ROCHE

FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

How was Berlin Fashion Week, Karlie? It was a whirlwind adventure. It was covered in snow, but I actually got to enjoy watching a show for once. It was nice being on the other side of the chaos! What show did you see? I saw a young designer, Degree Fahrenheit. It gave me a whole new perspective on things. Now that I’ve been in the audience, I’m much more aware. You can see how many times the person on the runway is blinking and even breathing! When you’re actually on the runway, you sort of shut everything out. You don’t think about anyone because it would be overwhelming to actually know who’s watching. I’m going to be a lot more self-aware on the runway now. You’d never been to a show before? No, that was the first time. Really? Unless you count my high school fashion show! [Laughs]. But even then I don’t think I got a frontrow seat.

actually the time to get it insured! Thoughts on your pal Jason Wu designing for the First Lady again? I’m so proud of him. The career he’s had in such a short amount of time is incredible. It’s truly just the beginning, but to have the recognition and validation of someone like Michelle Obama is huge. He’s going to be around for a very long time, but the fact that he did the two consecutive [inaugural ball] dresses will go down in history. The photos of you two together are always adorable. We’re the ultimate duo. He’s the one who puts me in heels and makes me even taller. It’s his fault! When did you do the Vogue shoot on Staten Island with Annie Leibovitz? We shot it in December, long after Hurricane Sandy. It was in-

“Now I feel all this pressure to start cramming for the SATs. I even bought an SAT prep book. You should help me study!” How many seasons have you been walking now? I’d have to count. I’ve completely lost track. This is my fifteenth? I’m not sure. I know it’s a lot, and that I’m going into this season as a seasoned veteran. [Laughs] It’s my favorite time of the year, and when I get to see everyone. That’s what’s so special about shows. The last time we spoke, for The Daily Berlin, it got picked up around the world because you said you wanted to go to Harvard. Why do you think people were so curious about that? Transitioning from a fashion career into college isn’t always the norm, so that’s something slightly different about me. I don’t know why it got picked up like it did, though. Now I feel pressure to start cramming for the SATs. I even bought an SAT prep book. You should help me study! Sure. Do you usually read what people write about you? To be honest, I don’t. I’m not very tech-savvy in the first place, and I’m slow to reply to emails. Every once in a while, I do see what’s out there, but 90 percent of it probably goes right by me, both good and bad, which is probably for the better. I just stick to doing what I’m good at and try to avoid the noise. Your haircut has been getting a lot of press lately. The Times called it the cut of the year! It’s kind of unbelievable. I’m not sure how it became such a phenomenon, but I’m excited that it’s inspired other women to feel empowered enough to make the chop. I feel like I’m in good company. I saw recently that Michelle Obama has a similar sort of ‘do. I’ve seen a lot of people recently doing a new cut for the New Year, and it’s really empowering and an honor to have that sort of recognition for my cut. I was in a coffee shop yesterday and I heard this group of girls talking about “the chop.” They didn’t realize that I was totally eavesdropping on their conversation. You may be too young, but do you remember Jennifer Aniston’s “The Rachel” from Friends? Of course! Come on! Are you going to get your hair insured? I probably should, knowing how brutal it is during the shows. But it feels really healthy right now since I cut it and haven’t had any real damage. So maybe this is

credible and an honor to meet the first responders. It was so humbling. And the chance to interact with them is is not something that I would have had the opportunity to do otherwise. Did you think it might be controversial at the time? The story itself and the photographs are, in my opinion, a tribute to these incredible heroes and pays respect to them. It was an honor to be a part of it, because it was celebrating all of their incredible work. Are there any legendary photographers left that you haven’t worked with? I would have loved to work with Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn. I was born in the wrong era! I wish that I was born a little bit earlier and had the chance to work with the greats. Are you an old soul? Entirely. I miss the film days. I was sort of on the tail end of film. I’ve worked with Paolo Roversi, who still uses quite a bit of film when he can get his hands on it. I’m old-fashioned in many ways, especially when it comes to fashion. I’m very nostalgic. There are so many incredible eras in fashion; the ’90s, the ’70s, the Halston era, the grunge era, and the ’60s in London. I don’t know, I wish I had a time machine so that I could experience each one of them. But the thing is, the world is also incredibly interesting right now, just in an entirely different way.

When the most talented intern to ever work in fashion isn’t returning your calls, what’s a Daily reporter to do? We staked out the neighborhood near Oscar de la Renta’s midtown atelier and put our investigative powers to the test. You can

run, John, but you can’t hide. Or maybe you can.

Have you ever seen John Galliano shopping here? I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s been here before. A lot of celebrities come. How many pirate outfits do you sell a year? We sell a pirate outfit every single day. If John wanted to go incognito, what look would you recommend? V for Vendetta would be cool. We could do something like Vegas show girl. He’s pretty eccentric. Do you carry a John Galliano costume? It would be very easy to put that together.

Missed CONNECTIONS! When John’s in town he often stays at The Lowell. We tried to get a hold of him there! Good evening and thank you for calling The Lowell Hotel, this is Eloise speaking. How may I assist you? Hi! Can I have John Galliano’s room, please. Excuse me? John Galliano, please. Can I put you on a brief hold? Sure! (Hold music returns. Violins.) Thank you for holding. I don’t have anyone under that name staying in the hotel. Bummer! Thank you! Page Six reported that John and Grace Coddington were spotted having a bite together at Sant Ambroeus on a recent Sunday. We rang them up to get the skinny… Good Evening! Sant Ambroeus downtown. How may I help you? Hi there. We’re calling from The Daily. We recently read in Page Six that John Galliano came in with Grace Coddington for brunch a few weeks ago. Can you tell me what he ordered? I’m going to put you in touch with my manager. (Hold music. Quite funky!)

Thank you for holding! This is Todd. How can I help you? Hi Todd. We understand that John and Grace Coddington came in for brunch. What did he eat? Any press queries have to be directed to our corporate office. There’s a lady that takes care of that. Her name is Chiara. We call and leave a message. Five minutes later, Chiara returns our call... Hello! Hi! This is Chiara returning your call! We understand that John Galliano was at your West Village location recently. We have so many celebrities that come through our restaurant and they always come because we keep it private. I’m sorry I can’t help you. Have a lot of people inquired about what he ate? I have to say that you are the first! A lot of people in the industry picked up the story on their blogs. It was everywhere! Absolutely. It was a great thing, but we try not to take advantage.

Darpin Darpin, Owner, Bazaar PERFUMES John’s working nearby now. Have you seen him? No, but I’m waiting for him. We sell his perfume. He’s a very big name, but I’m a bit disappointed with sales. Nobody has asked for it in a while. Would you hire John Galliano? He’d bring in a lot of clients. I’d be stupid to say no. John for a day! John for a whole life! I wouldn’t mind. Where should he hang out in the fashion district? There’s a great sushi place near The Times building. Gregory’s coffee is also across the street. Do you think people should get second chances? It depends on what kind of mistake they made.

eye-witness account! Dancer Todd Allen got fit next to John at Equinox’s 19th Street gym and Tweeted his sighting. We called him for the scoop... How did you know it was John? It was obviously him. He’s very specific looking. What was he wearing? A white long sleeve T-shirt and some crazy printed sweatpants, and the same kind of Newton running shoes that I had on. How did he run on the treadmill? He was actually walking. And you’ve spotted him again! I saw him Tuesday morning around 8:00 a.m. I posted on Facebook about my sighting, because only in New York are you rolling on a foam roller next to John Galliano. What was the reaction? It set a lot of people off that I had just mentioned him. Some people commented that he wasn’t relevant. Someone said ‘Nobody wants to look like a pirate anymore.’ I got 42 “likes.” What kind of mood was he in? When I noticed we had the same shoes, I said, ‘Nice shoes!’ And he said, ‘Yes, they are nice shoes.’ He didn’t seem angry or unhappy. Would you talk to him again? I find his work so inspiring. He’s an artist. However you choose to feel about him and your opinion about what he’s said in the past is up to you, but he’s a genius. Did he look healthy? Completely. And a little tan. How much do you think he can bench? Oh, not much. He and his trainer didn’t seem like they were working especially hard.

Allo, this eeeez moi, I just to say that I have looked at the office you would like for me to inhabit. It is verrry nice, but I have to say too too bright. Eeeez there anything you can do to make it, you know, un peu more chic? It’s so light, I have to wear my black glasses inside, which makes it very hard to see the pictures. And the kohl. No one can see my kohl, so what is the point? How am I supposed to work with so much sun always blinding? Can you please to install blackout drapes so I can hear myself dream? Also, I must talk to someone about the placement of the Keurig K cups instantaneous cafe maker, is that how you call it? And the restaurant in the lobby? It is not so chic, I think, to have so much food where people can see. Move it, s’il vous plait. À bientôt, La Reine
