How it started...

First things first: How did you come up with the idea for The Daily? I had created an online fashion news site in 1998 called Fashion Wire Daily, which was based on subscription and syndication. The idea was to deliver fashion news through the Internet, which in those days, was a very new thing. Computers were still running on DOS! I raised about $6 million in a few rounds from investors like Ron Perelman. It was very successful. Everyone was on it; we were carried on AP and hundreds of other places, and we became profitable by Year 2. Then, of course, there was 9/11, which destroyed everything—suddenly nobody cared about fashion content and the syndication model crumbled. I sold my share in the business, and five minutes later, Vicki Rose, the publisher of Us Weekly, which was a big success in those days, came up with the idea to call that girl who was doing that site that everyone was so obsessed with, and see if she could do a daily magazine for Us at Fashion Week, so she could sell some ads. It was a very, very smart idea. I had an aha moment—yes, there was a way to monetize an original, fun, fearless fashion news publication, even without the syndication, by doing it in print. I worked for them for a month, doing three issues of Us Weekly during Fashion Week. It was a hit, even though it was branded as Us Weekly, so the look of it wasn’t quite my style and I definitely couldn’t imagine luxury advertisers running in it. I knew that we could create a real Fashion Week daily in print that would be a success. Right after I finished production on that, I went and saw Chuck [Bennett] at IMG. I knew him before, and I had spoken about it with Fern [Mallis], who really encouraged me to pitch it. How did Chuck react? It was amazing how fast he made it happen. I came to him with a [profit-and-loss statement] with exactly how much money it would cost to make it, and exactly what I projected our net income would be—I am very left-brained/right-brained, and I think that is the secret to running a media business. My father was a CFO, and my mother was a creative person—a writer, poet, and professor. As a child, I wrote poems and short stories, I even won a national short-story contest, but meanwhile, when I was going to visit my dad at the office, I was obsessed with spreadsheets. I get a real joy out of hitting targets, getting the numbers right and closing a deal, but I also adore the creative aspect, and I would die without it. Chuck was super successful, he had created a $100 million business in IMG Models and the Fashion Week event, but despite being part of a giant global corporation, he was still a total entrepreneur and definitely one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met. With that fabulously sexy gravelly voice of his, he said, “Let’s do it!” He was a fan of what I’d done at Fashion Wire Daily, and he liked what I’d presented, so within three weeks, I had a job and an office. And then the panic set in! We had no staff or prototype, and I was supposed to generate hundreds of thousand of dollars worth of advertising…and this was eight weeks before Fashion Week! And you know what? I just did it. We actually made $100,000 profit on the first season.
How did you do it? the whole thing. He didn’t politicize anything openly, It was magic! I’ve always believed in karma. I knew so yet he politicized everything. IN THE BEGINNING… (Clockwise from left) Niro as a young girl in Bucharest; at the table ( far right); in a head shot from her acting days; her uncle, Toma Caragiu; with her husband, Giorgio Niro, at the opening of Industria Superstudio; getting into character.
Did you do any television? Seven or eight times, and some of it even included singing, which is hilarious, because I have absolutely no singing voice. I made two other movies—one of them, Uncle Marin, the Billionaire, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and I’ve had tons of interview requests from Romania in the past weeks. I played a billionaire’s daughter who was kidnapped. I basically ran around trying to escape the whole time. To this day, this was the most successful movie at the box office in Romania. But all of this came to an end after my uncle died in ’77. So, what happened? I moved to Paris. I needed to breathe. I met an amazing group of émigrés, including Eugène Ionesco, spent a New Year’s Eve in Gauguin’s former atelier, and loved it there, but I did not see myself building a life in Paris. I would have had to conform and change. I ended up in Toronto, where I worked for various magazines, like L’Express, doing a lot of fashion profiles, which is how I met the president of Hugo Boss and we became good friends. He was reassigned to New York as president for North America, and I went to work for him there. What was it like? The Hugo Boss era was fantastic. Our offices were in the Olympic Tower in the old Onassis apartment. Everything was mirrored, felt amazingly ’70s. In those days my job was called VP of marketing, reporting
directly to the global marketing head in Germany, as well as the U.S. president. And then after Hugo Boss, I consulted for The New Yorker while I built up a marketing company. But all through that time, I was putting together the idea of an Internet business. How many languages do you speak? Romanian, Italian, French, and English. I can sort of understand German and Spanish. Your mastery of the English language is incredible. Except for the accent! [Laughs] I never tried to lose it. But I have to thank my mother for this. She was a professor of linguistics who spoke and wrote fluently in eight languages, and had significant knowledge of another eight. She always insisted that, because nobody outside of Romania spoke our language, a civilized person has to have impeccable fluency in two or three other languages by a certain age. The Daily is known for its sense of humor. Is that what took the industry by surprise? I think so. People were saying, “It’s so funny.” They weren’t sure if they were allowed to laugh—the fashion world was extremely serious then! Anna, the glasses, you know, everyone desperately trying not to crack a smile. I found that absolutely hilarious. Gawker started around the same time as us, and we were adoring it right away, although we didn’t like the nastiness. In The Daily, we celebrated the people behind the scenes, and we did so with great love
for these characters and their talents. But we did it cheekily! Never a bite, just a nibble…quickly followed by a kiss! Everyone was shocked and surprised— I remember Ingrid [Sischy] saying, “Brandusa, this thing is so funny! I wasn’t sure at first, but it’s good!” André Leon Talley was the only one who scoffed at us, but then he came around. Who were the It Kids back in 2003? Zac Posen was everything back then. We first wrote about him in Fashion Wire Daily—Karin Nelson used to work for me, and she spotted him—and he came to a party we did. He was literally 18, and he came with Jordana Brewster. They were so gorgeous. Obviously, he was a big favorite for our first season. We did a “Who’s Who” in fashion, and we obsessed about Cathy Horyn from the very beginning. We also wrote about Amy Spindler, who I worshipped—really, such a talent—I miss her writing to this day. When did Graydon Carter discover The Daily? We had a relationship dating back to my days at Hugo Boss. I was doing the media buying, and obviously, every publisher and editor in chief were adoring the little Brandusa and the giant Hugo Boss budget. I had a massive professional crush on him; he is a genius. We had lunch together to just talk at The Royalton, and it was always such fun seeing him. We have a similar sense of humor. When I launched The Daily, he told me, “This is the best and most original magazine I’ve seen in ages!” He always, always gave me such props.

she’s got issues! (Clockwise from left) A Roitfeld moment during the first season of The Daily; an August ’17 cover of The Daily Summer; Niro in her former office at IMG; the 2017 Los Angeles edition.
He called it his second-favorite magazine. You’re right, he did [onstage at the Fashion Media Awards]! He comes from Spy and you know, The New York Observer under him was heaven. We can never forget our funny roots, because then, we lose our soul. People always ask us, “What’s your secret? How do you put out all these glossy magazine issues every day?” How do you answer that? The answer is have a sense of fun, and don’t agonize. I hate agonizing. If it makes us happy, we run it. I am very visual as you know, and the look of our pages makes me crazy with joy. I just want to kiss these pages. I want to take them to bed and sleep with them. In fact, I do. During Fashion Week, we have in bed me, [my dog] Desi, [my husband] Giorgio, and that day’s issue of The Daily. That’s my family. But the real secret is you. We have an incredible team that’s been here a long time and crafted the voice and the spirit of The Daily with me. If even one of you isn’t here, it makes it incredibly hard. We share the same humor, the same passions, the same love for immediacy. I love, love, love the immediacy! The fact that everybody reads us the next morning, and sends us their reactions? Amazing. How did you come up with the name The Daily? I’ve always believed in simple, to-the-point names. Ditto for headlines, ditto for stories. Let’s just call it what it is. But then IMG legal said we couldn’t protect it by copyright, because it’s too generic, so we had to add something, which is how we added “Front Row.”
2008 Despite the looming recession, the mag declared, “Chic Must Go On!” A catchphrase was born, and we hosted a spirited dinner at La Goulue.

We were really the first people to cover the front row—before, the boldfaced names in fashion just referred to the designers. From the very beginning, The Daily didn’t look or read like anything else—it’s a completely original, unique project. Have you ever had any disagreements with publicists over the years? [Laughs] Rarely, although I did hang up on a certain publicist with a French accent who had the audacity to call me about contacting one of his clients directly—a designer whom I greatly like and admire, and for whom we did lots of coverage. The designer was appalled to learn from me that his publicist blocked access to The Daily’s reporter at the show. Five minutes later, the publicist calls to say, “How dare you get in touch with my client directly,” and some other such arrogant nonsense. Suffice it to say, after 60 seconds of this, I hung up on him. He called back and said, “Are you hanging up on me?” And I said, “Yep, I am.” I didn’t like his approach—I don’t need anyone’s permission to call a designer. I was very clear with him—I am going to call whoever the hell I want. I may have told him that he was getting paid because people like me chose to write about his clients. But this guy was an exception and that kind of old-school BS is passé. 99.9 percent of publicists have been fantastic to work with, and we consider them so important to our business and our content. Ha! Memories! In 2008, I was covering the Dior show in Paris and I have a distinct memory of

getting a news alert about the cratering Dow and the collapse of Lehman Brothers. How were you feeling at the time? We had to be brave and creative and consider it an opportunity to challenge ourselves. I don’t believe in giving up, which is why we are still here today, and not only here, but we’re much stronger than we were then. I haven’t escaped communist Romania to be afraid of a little recession. And we made it! We hunkered down and protected our people and our business—I wouldn’t want to go through it again, though, because I’m sure it took a few years off of the end of my life. How did you end up buying The Daily in 2010? It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done. But to me a crisis in an opportunity. And I’m sort of fearless, as you can see. Except when it comes to the doctor! [Laughs] Right. How well you know me! Scared of the flu, but totally fearless when it comes to business. The main thing was I didn’t want a backer. So many people had offered to back me with private equity money, but then, you don’t really own it. So I had to do it my way, and this was 2010, the banks weren’t lending. Good thing I didn’t have any kids to put through college! And IMG was amazing. They gave time to pay for the business, and they also made it possible for me to continue the [distribution] relationship with the Fashion Week event. I will be forever grateful for this.
2011 Under the ownership of Brandusa Niro, The Daily moved to 135 West 50th Street, in the Time Inc. building. We shared a floor with Essence and immediately began obsessing over the barbecued shrimp and fro-yo from the corporate cafeteria.

How did it go? We literally doubled our revenues over three years. On our own, we were able to move quickly and nimbly. This is exactly what I had wanted— freedom. And right now the business environment is excellent. How did the Hamptons edition come about? Talk about fearless. I was sitting in our new offices in Time Inc.—and thank you, Martha Nelson, for giving us a home there for five years. It made everything so much easier. But here I was, not only do I have to deal with meeting payroll and paying the printers, but I wanted to expand! I called Richard Burns and made a joint venture with Dan’s Papers. I wanted to learn how to distribute and publish in the Hamptons and they were the gold standard—they’d been around for a million years. That joint venture didn’t turn out to be the answer for us in the Hamptons, but we learned everything. The Daily Summer is the best thing we could have thought of. It’s a jewel, and it grew exponentially and took over a big part of the local market share. In the Hamptons, magazines will never go away. You can’t read an iPad on the beach. And there’s a luxury audience there that will always enjoy the pleasure of a beautiful fashion magazine and will shop off of its pages. Are magazines going away? Magazines are becoming a premium product. Big magazines with huge circulations and big ad rates
face big challenges. We are just what the doctor ordered for the new world. Premium, ultra-targeted, and affordable. We also give a lot of real, meaningful added value to our clients. What inspired you to get into the events business? It’s incredibly important for us, and it’s part of our DNA. Our events are premium and spectacular. I come from marketing—I’m pretty sure I was the first fashion sponsor at Sundance with Hugo Boss. Early ’90s! I think that The Daily’s success comes from the fact that it was born of an event, Fashion Week. It’s focused. It leads in that space. And now, we’ve created events—like the Fashion Media Awards and the Fashion Los Angeles Awards—that celebrate the people in this business, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. It’s the perfect mix. The Daily’s events are ideal, because we’re doing something for the coolest, most influential people in fashion who feel happy and relaxed among their peers, and able to communicate with each other without fear. And yet this insider club generates 4 to 5 billion impressions, reaching the world at large. Have you had any favorite moments? Lady Gaga’s acceptance speech at the first FMAs— she was so real and truthful. The Tom Ford moment with Carine [Roitfeld] was magnificent. Sebastian Faena’s moment with Céline Dion at the FMAs was incredible. Also, I had to love the Graydon Carter
moment! And everything with Katie Grand, Stefano Tonchi, and Stephen Gan. They are superb talents in our business. Oh, and I also adore our Art Basel Miami dinners and special issues. They are ultra-chic and expand our focus beyond fashion. Who is your most trusted confidant? My husband [Giorgio Niro]. He’s incredibly supportive—he just believes in me, completely unconditionally. No matter what, I’m still the sunshine of his life. Proust Questionnaire moment: What is your idea of perfect happiness? I’m in the sunroom of my country house. Total quiet. Outside, it’s either beautiful summer or snowing, it doesn’t matter, because it’s toasty inside. The dog is next to me; Giorgio is on his iPad, commenting about various things he sees online. That’s it—my family. But I’d be super bored if I did that all the time. [Laughs] I know that I have this incredibly fun job, and I have you guys, who are my extended family and make me happy every day. I don’t have kids, so it’s really nice to have this interaction with people who are like-minded. If I had kids, probably they wouldn’t be nearly as like-minded as you! [Laughs] We have the same sense of humor, and are moved by more or less the same things. So all this is happiness for me. No rosé in that scene? Oh, of course. I was thinking more of the breakfast setting. ß

for the dough: In a small bowl, combine the milk and 1/4 cup flour. Dissolve the yeast in the milk mixture. Work into a dough. Place dough in a bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until it doubles in volume. On a pastry board, make a fontana by forming the remaining 1/4 cup flour into the shape of a volcano. In the fontana, mix together the salt, eggs, butter, and fermented dough. Soak the raisins in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, discard the excess water, and add the plumped raisins to the dough. Pour the mixture into a buttered, sugar-dusted large ring mold and let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour, until it doubles in size again. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 45 minutes. for the syrup: Dissolve the sugar in water over a low flame. Off the heat, add rum. Unmold the baba while it’s still warm. Pour over the rum syrup. Serve.

QUEEN OF 2003 With The Simple Life, that pink Bentley, and Tinkerbell, the first world-famous Chihuahua, Paris Hilton dominated the year of your Daily’s birth. (Doesn’t it all feel like yesterday?) How have things changed for the heiress-turned-DJ? Well, let’s just say the flashbulbs won’t stop popping any time soon. BY SYDNEY SADICK
What was it like to be you in 2003? That was the year The Simple Life started, and it was the beginning of a whole new life and career for me. I had just turned 21, so I was having the time of my life! I hosted birthday parties all around the world: at Studio 54 in New York, at Light nightclub at the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas, in Tokyo and in Europe. Sounds like it! How did reality TV in 2003 compare to what it is now? The Simple Life was a pioneer and paved the way for everything we have today. I travel and work so much that I’ve actually never watched any reality show besides The Simple Life and a couple of episodes of Honey Boo Boo, so I can’t really compare it to what’s on today, but The Simple Life was genuine, iconic, and timeless. Where were you living? [My sister] Nicky and I shared a house in the Hollywood “nobody Hills. It was so much fun—every night, something dressed was happening. She’s my best friend and one of like me. i was the only girls I trust, especially back then. What was your style like at the time? the only New It was definitely before its time—nobody dressed York socialite like me. I was the only New York socialite who who had a fun, had a fun, eccentric, Barbie doll style. I was eccentric, wearing a lot of Swarovski crystals, big chokers, and lots of pink. I loved Von Dutch—now I would barbie doll never wear it, obviously. [Laughs] I see everyone style.” rocking the same looks I wore back then! I also can’t forget Juicy Couture. I’m so happy they’re back. I probably have 1,000 different Juicy tracksuits in a closet that’s dedicated to my sweatsuits and tracksuits. What was the nightlife vibe like? Before everyone had iPhones, people would literally just go out to have a good time. In L.A., I’d go to Les Deux, Dublin’s, Pop, and Bar One. In New York, I liked Bungalow 8, Marquee, and Spy Bar. People weren’t trying to capture pictures and selfies every second. No one even had a phone out! It was a lot more free and enjoyable than it is now. So I built a nightclub in my house! Seriously? It’s called Club Paris. I always throw the most amazing themed parties—everyone says I have the best house parties in L.A. by far. I hardly go out anymore unless I’m DJing or there’s an important event or occasion. I like inviting my friends over and being able to be private without being harassed by cameras. I used to have parties a lot more, but since I’ve been in a serious relationship, I like relaxing and cooking. Do your neighbors complain about the noise? I soundproofed the entire club. Do you still have your pink Bentley? Yes, because it’s a piece of art, and so iconic, but I never drive it, because every time I do, people will literally jump in the middle of the freeway to stand next to me and the car and take selfies. So now, I just like to look at it. What were your favorite times at New York Fashion Week in 2003? It was so much fun. All the designers would send Nicky and me similar outfits. We’d love to go twinning to the shows, especially at DVF—we’d wear her wrap dresses. Fashion Week is still my favorite time to be with my sister. It’s a lot more work now, because people will push others over to get to me to take a selfie. Before it was just the paparazzi, but now, everyone’s a paparazzi.
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
How has NYFW changed for you? More people used to just watch the show and pay attention, but now everyone’s on their phones trying to capture images for social media. It’s a lot more work now because people will push others over to get to me to take a selfie. Before it was just the paparazzi coming up to me, but now, everyone’s a paparazzi. It gets annoying, so I like to show up right when the show’s about to start. What’s life like for you now, 15 years later? I’m so happy to be in the most incredible relationship. I can’t wait to start this next phase of my life and to have a family. I’m going to continue being a businesswoman and expanding my empire around the world. I have 19 product lines! I’m releasing my 24th perfume; I have a skincare line, a lingerie line, real estate properties, hotels, and more. I’m taking things to the next level, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. But I’m not going to travel as much. I travel 250 days a year, so I want to be home more in Los Angeles. I love what I do, and am excited for my next album and my new TV show—it’s a docuseries airing on Vice. Our condolences on the loss of Tinkerbell. She was 14 years old—she lived a long, healthy, and happy life. She was an icon, and my BFF. You recently got engaged—how did Chris [Zylka] propose? We were having lunch in Aspen, and he got down on one knee. I had a feeling he was going to ask, because he asked my dad if he could marry me a few days before Christmas, so I knew it was coming. It was so romantic to be up in the snowy mountains with the love of my life. The ring was so gorgeous and sparkly—I almost had a heart attack! What’s Chris working on now? We just did a short film together that we produced. He’s writing a TV show, and he might get into directing, depending on his schedule. He’s also an incredible artist. Ever since he’s shown at Art Basel, people love his work all around the world. He’s such a brilliant, talented mind in every way. I’m so proud of him. It blows my mind when I see the art he paints for me. What kind of wedding planner do you think you’ll be? It’s going to take a lot of planning, so I’ll need to find an amazing wedding planner. We’re deciding if we want to do it in L.A., which is home, or some tropical destination. I might do two or more… I don’t know! But we definitely want to do it soon. Have you thought about wedding dress designers yet? I’ve gotten so many calls and sketches from designers. I really want to get something special, unique, and different. I have to look through the whole list and see who’s the best. I loved my sister’s Valentino gown—she looked like a princess. Looking back, what would you have told your 21-year-old self? I wish I had known everything I know now back then. I’m obviously a lot wiser and more mature. [Laughs] I’d tell myself to not be too naïve and not let certain people in my life because you don’t always know what their intentions are. Do you still say your trademark, “That’s hot?” Yes! [Laughs] Every day, all the time, and I think I always will for the rest of my life. ß

“I’m like the Elaine Stritch of Fashion Week. Well, I hope someday to be like Elaine Stritch. I shouldn’t be so ballsy and say I am.”
“J’adore bling! J’aime ça! I sometimes prefer a certain ‘vulgarité’ from what people call ‘good taste.‘ There is a fine line, but don’t ask me where it is. It is very tricky to explain.” —Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele
“I simply know how to use my time efficiently. I never stand up when I can sit down; and I never show up when I can use a stand-in. But don’t worry; you’re talking to the real moi. Publicity is too important to trust to others.” —Miss Piggy

GOTTA HAVE GRACE Grace Elizabeth first stormed the runway at age 17, and in short order, she landed campaigns for Chanel and Valentino, modeled for Victoria’s Secret, and covered Vogue Italia. Now, at 20, she’s among the most in-demand models in the industry. Meet and greet! BY SYDNEY SADICK Where on earth are you from? Lake City, a town in North Florida. How were you discovered? It wasn’t technically a discovery— my mom submitted my photos. I used to do mall shows for a prom store in my town, and I also did some wedding stuff. I was 16, which was crazy, but my mom decided to take things to the next level and submitted my photos to NEXT in Miami. I signed with them, and then was picked up by NEXT New York. What do you miss the most about your pre-supermodel life? The stillness. I knew exactly what I was going to do every single day—I would wake up, get ready for school, go to school, go to sports practice, and come home. Now, my schedule is very unpredictable. I try to go home to Florida once every month or two, and when I’m there, I’m not “Grace Elizabeth!” I’m just myself. Everyone’s really chill. We sit on the porch all day long and drink tons of coffee. What are your hobbies? I just started college, so right now, that’s kind of my life. I’m studying nutrition through Kaplan University online. I also love yoga, boxing, and Pilates, and I just bought a mini trampoline. Most afternoons, you can find me watching Netflix while jumping on it. I’m also studying to become a yoga instructor. I have a lot on my plate at the moment! What was it like to work with Karl Lagerfeld on the Chanel campaign? He’s amazing. He doesn’t spend very long on photos—he already knows what he wants. He looks at the outfit, takes maybe three pictures, and that’s it. How did you end up on the cover of Vogue Italia? I didn’t know until the second day of shooting, when I happened to see the photos on the board pinned up with the Vogue logo on it. I was
thinking, “Holy cow!” When they told me I got it, I almost passed out. You spend so much time on a plane. How do you deal? I have a special power—I can sleep at any moment. You’re a Victoria’s Secret model—was that always your goal? The day I went in to meet with my agency before I signed, they asked me about my goals, and I said I wanted to become a Victoria’s Secret model. They said, “Oh yeah, everyone walks in and wants that, but we can make it happen!” What would we be surprised to learn about you? Artichokes are my least favorite food. They’re the nastiest thing I’ve ever come across. And I can rap! Your personal style is… Very relaxed. I dress like either a boy from the ’90s or a chick from the ’70s. What was the first runway show you walked in? Miu Miu. Katie Grand took a chance on me and put me in the show. I was really freaked out, because I hadn’t done anything but a mall show before that. It was such a long runway! Since it’s our 15th anniversary, what were you up to 15 years ago? I would’ve been 5 years old, so I was probably blowing dirt bubbles and eating worms like every other 5-year-old. There’s one picture of me covered in dirt and eating my mom’s lipstick. How is your mother reacting to your success? She’s proud. She knew I’d go far, but she thought I’d stay and work from home. When I moved to New York, things changed—I walked more shows and got Victoria’s Secret. She’s so proud, and has a subscription to every single magazine just in case there’s a tiny, tiny picture of me. She still travels with me everywhere! ß GOOD AMERICAN jeans; LACRASIA gloves; CHANEL earrings

Saint Bart
One of The Daily’s greatest champions of all time? IMG Models’ head Ivan Bart. Our anniversary celebrations inspired us to reflect on the modeling industry’s evolution. It’s a different world than the one we encountered in 2003! BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLIAM JESS LAIRD
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
What were your first impressions of The Daily? I clearly remember walking into Bryant Park, where people were handing it out. In all honesty, people were afraid. Fashion people are serious. Brandusa’s take on it is fun and irreverent. When I picked it up, it gave me so much joy and I thought, “This woman is a genius. She really celebrates fashion.” How great to fast-forward to modern day, when the who’s who attends The Daily’s Fashion Media Awards. It’s the “it” thing to do during Fashion Week. All the A-listers come! Why do you get along so well with Brandusa? I have a creative gene, and she’s very creative, too. There’s nobody more fun to brainstorm with about cover or story ideas. You can float a topic, and she takes it to another place. I love that she loves models— she picks a girl of the season, and she becomes obsessed. Fortunately, she’s been obsessed by many IMG models over the years, and I thank her for that. Why do you want your models in The Daily? It’s a tremendous go-see! It’s in the hands of everyone from Anna Wintour, and every other editor under the sun, to every influencer and buyer. How has IMG Models evolved during your tenure? I started in 1994, and my directive at the time was to make it a fashionable modeling firm. They were already on the right road, thanks to Tyra Banks and Nikki Taylor. By 1997, we had signed Angela Lindvall, Carolyn Murphy, and Bridget Hall. And then in 1998, Gisele [Bündchen] signed with us. In 2000, Kate Moss joined. In 2003, there was a shift in the industry—it was the era of the working model, ephemeral beauties like Gemma Ward and Lily Cole— real, natural, beautiful women. Not all these models had huge personalities, but they were great workers and had personal lives. How did the recession in 2009 change things? It was so bad financially, and it hurt a lot of people. I knew I could count on the department stores, which was a full-circle moment, because I came to IMG Models to connect with real fashion. Miranda Kerr, for instance, was doing a lot of commercial catalog work, and I’ll never forget trying to sell her to do runway. Joan Smalls is a great story to talk about the change of conversation. She was a beautiful woman of color who had worked in the industry and knew her angles. Our team put together her look, and she became a big hit. What were things like in 2013? Unfortunately, there wasn’t that much diversity. When you look back at the shows, there were a lot of blonde, blue-eyed women walking the runways. We all needed to raise our voices. How did the body positivity movement impact the industry? A plus-size division of a competitor had closed, and five women from that agency walked into our office. They were the most engaging and fabulous people, and we signed them. One of them was Ashley Graham. It became clear to us that inclusion was key, which brings us to the present day. Ashley has become the first curve model to sign a cosmetics contract. Hari Nef is in the biggest movie [Assassination Nation] out of Sundance this year. It’s an exciting time. Why is Ashley Graham such a star? I’ve always said she’s a modern Oprah. Oprah is

comfortable in her own skin, she speaks an authentic truth, she makes you feel comfortable. When Linda Wells went to some of Revlon, I called her and said I’d like to img’s top help her so we had lunch, and I pitched model her the idea of Ashley. It took a long time talents to convince the brand, but here we are. I would definitely bank on Ashley to be a big media star. And what about Gigi Hadid? She was so authentic when I met her. She was raised very well. Her mom set boundaries. All the Hadid Gigi Hadid children are special. I first met her at Wimbledon at a cocktail party for IMG. She said, “I’m Gigi, and I’m one of your models. I happen to be living here in London.” When she left, I looked at everyone around me and said, “Is that not a breath of fresh air?” When I came back to New York, I made phone calls and put her in rooms. Later, during the weekend of the Oscars, Gigi and I went out together, and as young as she was, she knew a lot of people in the room. I didn’t realize how famous her family was. She introduced me to Oprah! Who are the superstars of the future? Presley Gerber. I’ve watched him evolve into a thoughtful, sensitive, handsome, and compelling talent. This is his year. For much of my career, women dominated my conversation, and it’s interesting to see so many conversations now Jordan Barrett surrounding our male talents. The Daily helped support Jordan Barrett’s conversation. We’ve had so many successes with #weloveyourgenes, our Instagram model search campaign. Lameka Fox walked the Victoria’s Secret show; Alyssa Traoré is now in all the campaigns. Diana Silvers is another great story. What’s your approach to wellness? I used to go on a kick in the summer—no carbs, no alcohol, spin class, eating 1,000 calories a day.… I’d lose 20 pounds, and then everyone at Fashion Week would tell me I look fabulous. By the end of Fashion Week—the erratic hours, grabbing food on the go, and drinking a few glasses of champagne—I would have already put on 10 pounds. And then Ashley Graham looked me in the eye and said, “Ya know what? Why don’t you pick a size that you can maintain?” And I went, “Well, that is very logical!” Since then I have literally fluctuated five pounds. I don’t look good for fashion. I’m comfortable in my size and what I can maintain. How have you changed since 2003? The one consistent thing is that I’m still competitive, I still want us to win, I’m detail-oriented, I’m obsessed, and I want to do my job well. I think that’s why I like Brandusa so much—she’s also obsessed with doing the best job we can do. What has changed? I have more experience now. I’m better equipped to navigate, and I have more confidence. I breathe through problems better. What I didn’t understand until a few years ago is what a gift and platform the industry has been. We create careers, and a lot of our clients have come through our door or amassed tremendous wealth and taken care of their kids in a different way than they might have otherwise. Their kids now have better opportunities because of the work that these models did. I truly understand that when kids open up their fashion magazine for the first time, what they see needs to reflect who they are. ß

A CHAR IS BORN! You’re already obsessing over the fabulous life of Char Defrancesco, as seen via Instagram. Isn’t it about time you met the affable candle impresario? Over juice at the West Village townhouse he shares with beau Marc Jacobs, he revealed his scents and sensibility.
BY ASHLEY BAKER photography by william jess laird
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
This place smells seriously amazing. Do you have a candle in every corner or something? No, a lot of it really is the quality of the candle. If you light a $60 candle, your whole f**king room should smell delicious. Of course. How did you end up making candles? Originally, in L.A., I found out that I was spending more money on candles than I was on rent, and I thought, “Something’s not right here.” I also noticed that I wasn’t getting my money’s worth in candles— these $60 to $100 candles weren’t living up to what I thought they should be. My roommate at the time had this revelation, and said, “Why don’t you just make your own candles?” So I started researching waxes, and I learned that coconut wax is the best wax you can have—it burns the longest and cleanest
and throws more scent, but no one uses it because it’s the most expensive wax there is. I was really doing it to save myself some money, and have a little product of my own. I found a company in Los Angeles—some Malibu hippie-chic type of place— that started making candles for me. How big is the line? It’s fairly small—I make batches of only 250 at a time to get the quality right. There are two scents in the collection, although I’m working on more. There’s Bae, which is a baise [Bulgarian rose] smell, and Lit, which is the original scent—agarwood and hashish. Lit is the one we use in the house. Have you always been a scents guy? What are the first ones you remember? Michael Jordan Jump. I was in third grade or

something! And then CK One, obviously. Acqua di Gio was huge, too. Marc Jacobs Daisy… Where are you selling them? Just online [at getlitbychar.com]. I’m working on new boxes, because these candles are so expensive to make that the packaging should reflect that. I’m kind of doing this on my own—Marc’s guiding me a little bit. The branding has all come organically. I grew up partially in Switzerland, and so French is my first language. I always thought it was so funny seeing “Bougie” on a candle, and now all the kids are saying, “Aw, that’s boujee, that’s bad and boujee,” and I thought it was funny to have this bougie candle made by Char. So wait—you’re Swiss? I was born in Switzerland; my whole family is full Italian. My mom’s side of the family grew up in California, in the movie business and stuff. My grandma was actually an actress in the golden age [of Hollywood]. My mom and dad owned a boarding school in Lausanne, got married, had me, and divorced when I was 3, so I moved back to L.A. Every Christmas and summer I’d spend in Switzerland, though, and I did some school there. It’s beautiful, but there wasn’t a lot going on. You’re more of an L.A. guy, then. Absolutely. I went to UCLA for political science, and then after school, I opened up a retail store in the Bay Area. Go figure! I was very naïve—my demographic was hip and trendy dads, and I thought I’d kill it. And then the economy crashed. In a crisis, they were the last people to be spending money on themselves— they were spending it on their wives and kids. So after having a failing business, my friend asked me to move with him to New York, so I did that, and started off on his couch, wondering, “What do I do with my life?” I started modeling here and there, and working like five jobs, or no jobs, and I got a social media presence. Everyone in New York is so closely knit. Then I moved back to L.A. after being here for five years, and I started bartending. Then I went through a really bad breakup and decided to redo my closet, and built it all from scratch. I put it up on social media, and it got a lot of response, so I ended up with a side hustle of redoing closets. It led to rooms and interior design. Then I met Marc, and we started hanging out, and I couldn’t really take on any projects, being here and there, and at the time, we were going to Paris a lot, too. I had the candle thing on the back burner. What are your tricks and tips for creating a cool, engaging social media account? I’m kind of clueless—it’s all pretty organic. I don’t put too much thought behind it. We’re all fun people, especially when we get away. We like to have fun and be goofy. One of the first times we went to St. Barts together, we made all these crazy videos, and
char’s world With Marc Jacobs, Aby Rosen, and Naomi Campbell at Campbell’s 2016 book launch; on the red carpet of the 2017 Met Gala with Frances Bean Cobain, Jacobs, and Courtney Love.
these headlines came out—Marc, spiraling on drugs again, with his new boyfriend, underwear model Char Defrancesco. How ridiculous! Because we’re making these silly videos, people think we’re f**ked up on drugs? No, we’re just having fun! Was that weird for you, to all of a sudden be covered in the press as an underwear model? I’ve been called a lot worse for doing a lot less. [Laughs] I don’t care. My family loves me, I love my family, I have my friends who I love, who love me…life is good. It is what you make it. We have to talk about your Balenciaga obsession. Have you always been a stylish guy? Yes. It’s evolved as we evolve. You go somewhere and pick up a different appreciation of a culture or genre. You take in what you like from it, and now that I’m dating a fashion designer, there are some good and bad things—he’s ruined some of the things that I used to think were so cool. He’s told me like 20 things
“because we’re making these sillY videos, people think we’re f**ked up on drugs? no, we’re just having fun!” FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
that are wrong with it. And I’ve learned to appreciate other things that I never even knew existed. I’m obsessed with Demna and Raf Simons. So you’re cool with the dad sneakers. Marc was into them, and he’s never been into sneakers in his life. I was like, “Those are the ugliest effing sneakers I’ve ever seen.” Then I got a pair, and I was like, “These are the ugliest effing sneakers I’ve ever seen, I need them in every single color.” Fashion is a pendulum—things were getting so luxury and so perfect for so long, that they were getting idle and stagnant. Somebody threw in something ugly and different? Cool. Now I have this thing with my friends—“That is so ugly; I’ll take it in a medium.” If you can pull off something ugly, that says a lot about you. You’re in amazing shape. What’s your workout? I go to Equinox, and I try to stay active. Being from California, I like to be outside. I ski, I wakeboard in the summer…getting Marc outside to do anything is a struggle, because when you’re born and raised in New York, you have a different mentality. I don’t surf—I’m not down with sea creatures, to be honest—but I do love the ocean. And I’m trying to get into yoga! You have quite the art collection here. Any favorites? Well, it’s obviously mostly Marc’s—I can’t afford this on a candle salary—but I’m super into Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, John Currin, Gerhard Richter, Warhol, obviously…but I’d probably say Ed Ruscha or Richard Prince are my favorite artists here at the house. What’s your playlist? I love Drake, I’m not gonna lie. I love Little Kim and her new album. Cardi B, Bruno Mars… What’s your life like during Fashion Week? How do you stay sane? I get a bottle of Xanax, a bottle of Adderall, and pray for the best. [Laughs] Do you go away after the show? Definitely. We disappear. We never know where, because Marc’s always like, “No, I don’t want to go away,” and then two days before, he’s like, “Nick [Newbold, Jacobs’ assistant], book something.” Last year, we went to Big Sur. The Post Ranch Inn is the nicest place I’ve ever been in my life. We had no cell service, and there were no cars in and out, and we were isolated above the clouds. The first couple of days, I was freaking out, but after you relax, it really is heaven. What do you hope to do with the candles? Ideally, it would be nice to be in Bergdorf or Barneys, but it’s not about the money or career goals. This is kind of a side project. You seem like a super nice guy, but I would not want to arm wrestle you. I saw that video of you and Lorenzo [Martone] at Kate Moss’s birthday dinner! [Laughs] Our names were randomly picked out of a hat, and I turned beet red, like, “Oh, f**k. I gotta win this! Too many eyes!” But Lorenzo’s a good friend of mine, and he was such a good sport. He might have let me win, I don’t know. Now that you’re a fixture of the fashion world, what’s the most surprising thing that you’ve experienced? Anna Wintour is actually one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my entire life. ß

let’s talk about sex
Your Daily isn’t the only one who’s especially fond of 2003. We located some fashion fiends who are equally nostalgic for that era on the Sex and the City tour of NYC! BY EDDIE ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH TURNER-HARTS
OUR FEARLESS GUIDE! MEET Melissa Stokoski
The tour kicks off outside of The Plaza Hotel— the venue for Big and Natasha’s engagement party. Bitch!
Remember Miranda’s Rabbit Vibrator? First stop on the tour is sex toy go-to The Pleasure Chest in the West Village.
Cessie Dunn, 25, NewCastle, England What brings you here? I did this tour four years ago, but I read it changed a little bit, so I wanted to see what was new. So you’re a superfan. Definitely. I’ve got the DVDs and have watched the entire series 10 times since it ended. The last time I watched it was two weeks ago. I wanted to be prepared! What’s been your favorite part of the tour? Stopping by The Pleasure Chest. Which Sex and the City character are you? Five years ago, I would have said Samantha. What would you say is your FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
favorite quote from the show? “Dirty martini, dirty bastard.” Samantha said it to Richard. Carrie was famously dumped by a Post-it note. Are you still traumatized? Berger did that. I hated him. He’s a dick. I also didn’t like Aleksandr Petrovsky. I liked him at first, but then he hit Carrie. Leave immediately! What would you do if you met SJP? I’d probably go into shock. Are you watching Divorce? Who’s in it? Sarah Jessica Parker! I’ve never even heard of it.
How did you get this gig? I was doing stand-up and a guy saw me and said I’d be perfect for this. What kind of tourists do you encounter? A lot of our international guests view New York through the show and it means something to them. Coming to New York wouldn’t be the same for them without seeing these specific things that they already know and feel connected to. Are people longing for the year 2003? Oh, sure! Everybody is nostalgic at this point. Who wants what we’re going through now? Has anybody ever shown up wasted on the tour? I wish! That would be funny. I’d love to kick someone off the bus for being too drunk! Just kidding! I’ve definitely had bachelorette parties that got out of hand. How does the tour change after the stop for cosmos? It’s a radical change! As the tour progresses people start to talk to each other and alcohol only accentuates that. It’s fun to get back on the bus with everyone a little buzzed up. Has SJP ever taken the tour? The tour ran into her. She was walking around the West Village. She took pictures with everyone. My tour spotted Cynthia Nixon. She had no makeup on. Everyone could take pictures and she had no idea what was happening!
Megan Plott, 33, South Carolina
Are you a superfan? Not really. I’ve seen the show, but it’s been a long time. We binge-watched them when I was in college. We’d get them at Blockbuster when you actually rented movies. I remember driving there at 11:58 p.m. to get the next season. What did you learn about fashion from the show? You can wear anything that you want! I grew up in a small town in Virginia and people are very conservative, so to watch Carrie wear panties out in broad daylight was fun. Were you familiar with Dolce & Gabbana? Maybe in a hip-hop song. I certainly didn’t see people wearing it. I learned about fashion brands through Sex and the City.
Buddahkan! Remember when Carrie and Big’s rehearsal dinner for their doomed marriage was held at this still open (!!!) Chelsea spot in the first SATC movie?
Rasmus Lindquist,
25, Window Cleaner, Visiting from Sweden Yes, that’s Carrie’s place! The residents of Perry Street are very familiar with this particular photo op.
Maggie Martin, 33,
everett collection (1); getty images (1); eddie roche (1)
North Carolina
What does SATC mean to you? I’m here with four friends, and we grew up together. New York has always been on our bucket list, and we wanted to relive a show that we used to watch. Every time the movie or the show comes on TV, it spurs a group text. We’re reliving memories! Which character do you relate to? That’s tough. Probably Carrie. I’m still single. The dating experience is still ongoing for me. I also love to write and have a love for fashion. I’m very career focused right now. Mr. Right will come along. Are those Manolos? No. Today, I’m wearing Jessica Simpson shoes, but I normally wear Louboutins. I’m a little embarrassed. When’s the last time you had a cosmo? It’s been years, but you have to on the tour. It’s a salute to Sex and the City!
Cosmo time! A few sips of everybody’s favorite early-aughts cocktail is a tour highlight. Guests descended on Onieals, which was called Scout on the show, to sling back a few.
Any relation to Alex Lindquist by any chance? No, but I wish I looked like that! What brings you here today? My girlfriend made me come. I’ve seen the show once so I was like… okay! Why not? What have you learned on the tour? I’ve learned they have great cosmopolitans in New York! I’m zoning in and out. You’re already on your second cosmo! I’m from Sweden. We drink fast. Which character from the show did you find hottest? Carrie. I like her hair. What were you up to in 2003? Watching football.
