THIRTY SECONDS!

With Dennis Basso

Tom Fo ily in London, The Dae’ll W . ed rm nfi has co tails report further deem. th n ar le e w as

With Kylie Jenner

Why’d you come out for Vera Wang? I love Vera. I met her for Khloé’s wedding. Are you walking? I’m not a model. I only walk in Kanye’s shows. He inspires me and I go to his house and try on clothes for hours. He’s really dope and he’s my brother-in-law. Got it. Which designer do you wear most? Balmain. Thoughts on NYFW? The nights are crazy and the shows are so creative. Everybody’s different.

VERA WANG

AFTER PARTY!

With Edward Enninful The W party was epic. How are you feeling this morning? Thank God I don’t drink, so I feel perfect. Loved the Mariah moment! Mariah, Naomi, Ciara, Leonardo DiCaprio came later. It was a good turnout. What’s Mariah like at a party? She seemed very sweet. It was the first time that I met her. I’m looking forward to getting to know her. What’s been the highlight of the week so far? Too many to mention, but Riccardo was incredible. I loved Carolina Herrera, too. You have a good eye. What models are you into? Tami Williams, Amilna Estevão. I’m obsessed with Lexi Boling, Anna Ewers, which is a no-brainer, and my God, Lineisy Montero.

YOUR DAILY DOSE SCENE

☛ Coach had its first runway show on the High Line. Gotta love a grassy backdrop! ☛ Meanwhile, Vera showed in Chelsea, and Dennis Basso did the Moynihan Station thing. ☛ HEARD “I’m very happy to be interviewed. I way prefer that over being photographed.”—Glenda Bailey at Vera Wang.

With Renée Fleming

How do you know Vera? We met at the Met in 2008, and we’ve been friends ever since. She did my dress for the Super Bowl and my wedding dress, too. We’re artists in sympathy and mothers as well. We have a lot in common. There are mirrors everywhere here. Do you look in the mirror? It’s a little distressing for me, because I’m wrestling with my hair all the time and the humidity. Other than that, I try to avoid them. What do have lined up for the fall? I’m on my way to L.A. to do a big cancer benefit with Andrea Bocelli at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. We’ve never sung together, so that will be fun. It’s all duets—half opera, and half film and popular music.

HIGH NOTES!

SWITCHEROO! With Christina Ricci

You were sitting next to Anna, but someone moved you. Why? I have no idea! I’m not in charge! [laughs] Logistics! Are you into Coach? I am! I like how classic the brand is. It’s always been a very stylish standby and now they’re revamping it to something modern. Do you shop online? Yes, a lot. I have a problem, but not a serious one. I love Zara and TheRealReal.com—consignment stuff.

SPEAKING GERMAN!

With Markus Ebner, fashion director, Achtung

Carine Roitfeld and Stuart Vevers

What do you dream about when you’re sleeping? Being in a fabulous place. Once in a while, they’re not so fabulous, so I try to start over. With Paris and Tell us about the collection. Nicky Hilton It was inspired by south of the border. Sexy, modern. Years ago there was Rita Hayworth and all of those kinds of women, but today there’s Eva Mendes, Selena Gomez, and Sofia Vergara. What do you wear when you want to feel sexy? I have a lot of looks, but sexy is not one of my strongest looks. I like to check the sophisticated and elegant box. I can be a little foxy, though. What’s the most fabulous thing you’ve done lately? I’ve been working on the collection, but we’re going to Mustique island for Thanksgiving and Aspen at Christmas. A lot of work in between. Ivana Trump is your pal. Are you voting for Donald? I’m not sure who I’m voting for yet. I’m voting Hoda Kotb. Ask her a question!

You’re at every show! I am. Achtung is a German fashion magazine that comes out twice a year and Germany is an important market for all the brands. German editors have told us that they’ve had trouble getting into shows. Do you find that? Not at all. I have a New York background. I lived here from 1992 through 2001. I was the U.S. fashion director for Details. I know all these folks, and most of the security guards.

TALKING POLITICS!

With Ivana Trump You’re a Dennis Basso champion! He’s been a friend for more than 35 years! When he opened, his showroom was the size of my closet. I went there and I was pregnant and he showed up sweating. What’s the most fabulous show you’ve ever been to? Yves Saint Laurent in Paris in his prime in the late ’80s. The colors and the tailoring were fantastic. Yves was on the shy side, but a very nice guy. You once said, “Don’t get mad, get everything!” That was for The First Wives Club, which was a comedy, and it’s true. After the divorce you should be entitled to get the money to live in the same lifestyle if the man can afford it. I’m not saying you take the man to the cleaners, but take care of yourself and the kids.

ALL GROWN UP! With Paris Hilton

How long have you known Dennis? Since I was a little girl. My parents are friends with him. I walked in one of my first runway shows at his show when I was a teenager. I always come to support him. He’s been a great friend. I love that he’s branched out and is doing these incredible gowns and dresses. Where do you live these days? My loft in Soho, Los Angeles, and I also live with my boyfriend [Thomas Gross] in Ibiza and Switzerland. We jet around. Were you at Givenchy? I arrived last night. I had to get my hair colored and chopped off. It was long! BFANYC.COM (5); GETTY IMAGES (7); PATRICK MCMULLAN.COM (10); STEFANIA CURTO (2)

HARD AT WORK!

With Sally Singer

z Bu z

Are you much busier now, thanks to VogueRunway.com? Everyone on the team is a lot busier, but in a good way. What are your day-to-day responsibilities? I’m the creative director of the digital side of Vogue, so it’s all sorts of things. During Fashion Week, it’s a lot of going to shows. We have a very active culture team. It’s not just fashion. Thoughts on Peter? I love what he’s doing for Oscar. He’s very respectful to the house and to Oscar’s legacy. And the red flowers here belong to a very Oscar de la Renta world. Peter has an intuitive sense of modern femininity.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

We interviewed your trainer in The Daily Summer! Thank you for that, and thank you for that photo, because I liked the way I looked in it! Have you walked for Oscar? I did in the ’90s quite a bit. I’m a huge fan of Peter Copping and I’m in the ad campaign for Oscar. I don’t normally sit at shows. Why not? I have a teenage daughter and I’m super busy raising her. I prefer to walk in a show, believe it or not. At 42, I think I can still do that. How was your summer? I had a great summer! It was very quiet. How about you? Busy! Does your daughter have any desire to model? My daughter is young and I don’t feel she’s mature enough yet. Maybe when’s she older, like what my parents did after I graduated high school.

CALIFORNIA LOVE!

With Kati Nescher

You have an incredible story. I turned to this business, just four years ago, when I was 27. It wasn’t planned. It was the right moment and the right people. I’m probably the only one who started so late. I have a little boy who is 5 now. Where do you live full time? New York. I just got a house in L.A. I’m all over. Why L.A.? California sun!

He goes, “OK, we got it!” You think, “Oh, I thought you were just fixing the light.” Did you wear Miu Miu pre-campaign? No. I couldn’t afford it! Are you into fashion? I am quite lazy in that sense, but I appreciate it.

He hid dark circles with Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer, and eyes, brows, and lips were finished with Baby Lips in Quenched.

RUNWAY

Spring 2016

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Peter Copping has found his footing. The designer’s second collection at Oscar is more of a 50-50 split between his own sensibilities and the house’s historical aesthetic. Case in point: a pink taffeta strapless gown that was 2016-ified with black lace. Especially divine: a belted silver suit that will perform for ladies who both work and lunch.

RODARTE Outerwear, anyone? Mongolian lamb coats are Rodarte’s hottest offering, so fingers crossedish for a cool spring. The rest of the ’70s fare was familiar territory—but it’s OK to invest in this trend now, because it isn’t going anywhere.

FRANCISCO’S

TOP 10 MOMENTS

Francisco Costa has had too many career highlights to count in their entirety, which is why we asked him to narrow them down a bit. BY EDDIE ROCHE FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

4 1

Receiving the Smithsonian, Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion, 2009 “When I went to Washington, D.C., to receive the award, I visited the White House and was welcomed and congratulated by First Lady Michelle Obama herself, which made the experience even more meaningful.”

Winning his second CFDA Award, 2008

“When I received my first CFDA Award in 2006, I didn’t expect it and thought perhaps the industry was just being good to me since it is always very supportive of young designers. But then two years passed, and I received my second CFDA Award in 2008. This was a very special moment, because I felt it was not just about being nice—it was a legitimate recognition from my peers and the industry, and that gave me great satisfaction.”

2

Karlie Kloss’ runway debut, 2008

“I don’t think I realized it at the time, but looking back now, having Karlie Kloss make her runway debut at my show was monumental for me. I knew there was something special about her back then, and it’s been amazing to watch her career take off and evolve.”

3 Calvin Klein toasts its 40th anniversary, 2008 “We hosted a huge event to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. Architect John Pawson designed a custom space alongside the High Line, and our guests were able to tour the park before it opened to the public—it was truly a magical night.”

7

Collaborating with Ellsworth Kelly on a dress to commemorate the artist’s 90th birthday, 2013 “I have been a longtime fan of Ellsworth Kelly’s work, so I was very excited and honored when I was approached about the project. In working with Ellsworth on this dress, I was constantly invigorated by his energy, creativity, and precision, and our design approaches complemented each other so well. It was a truly inspiring experience and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with him, and to also celebrate this significant milestone in his life.”

5

Kendall Jenner wears Calvin Klein Collection to amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes, 2015

Accepting the Award of Inspiration at the Inspiration Gala in São Paulo, 2012

“I don’t think anyone could have pulled off this dress the way that Kendall did. She is truly a modern beauty, and I’m thrilled to have gotten to work with her and know her better over the past year.”

10

“I was thrilled to return to my native Brazil and receive this award for such an important, worthwhile cause.”

6

Collaborating on an event with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, 2012 “Seoul was the perfect city to host our event; it is so modern and has such a wonderful, vibrant energy. That evening we were celebrating digital media and fashion, and as one of the most technologically advanced cities, we could not have found a better place to do it in than Seoul.”

9

8

Partnering with Charles Atlas on the Fall campaign, 2015 “Working with Charles was amazing— he is so creative and really helped bring the collection to life.”

Designing Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar gown, 2015 “We refer to this around the office as Pearlgate— just when you think awards season could not get any more dramatic!”

Beauty alert! This fall marks TRESemmé’s 15th consecutive season at New York Fashion Week. In celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the chicest looks crafted by the hair-care brand for the Spring/Summer ’16 collections.

Diane von Furstenberg

CAROLINA HERRERA “We wanted the hair to have a very ethereal and angelic edge but with a modern feel. It’s about creating a soft, barely there look that has lots of gentle movement.” —Orlando Pita, New York Fashion Week Ambassador for TRESemmé

Rachel Zoe

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG “This look is really all about Diane! Before the show, she was sharing photos with me of herself in the 1970s where it was the first time she’d let her hair fall in its natural wave and I just loved the texture and the volume she had, so I wanted the girls to rock a little of her personality today.” —Orlando Pita HERVÉ LÉGER “It’s a new, softer look for our Hervé Léger girl this season. She’s still creating a strong statement with the braid but we’ve played with making this more relaxed with purposely pulled out loose pieces that frame her face and create beautiful movement when she walks.” — Orlando Pita Misha Nonoo

MISHA NONOO “There has been such a return to effortless hair this season and loose, undone styles, but I still like to try and do something to sneak in a little edge, so these subtle straight pieces, or the blunt fringe, give your look some individuality and personality, which is perfect for the Misha Nonoo girl.” —Orlando Pita

Carolina Herrera

RACHEL ZOE To complement a collection inspired by the jet-setting Gypset—from fringe, sequins, and intricate patterns to flowing hemlines and tuxedo separates—TRESemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu created an effortless-looking loose wave, first pin-curling the hair and then separating the coils with a wide-toothed comb.

HAIR HAPPENINGS!

Which coifs will you covet come springtime? A few suggestions…

Bb. Yourself With Anthony Turner, lead stylist for Bumble and bumble, at Opening Ceremony “If a girl walks in and she’s got curly hair, we make it a bit more curly. If she has cool beachy hair, we make it a bit more beachy. Whatever she’s got, we’re turning the dial up a little. Just so it doesn’t feel messy, I’m doing a swoosh through the front with a bit of a nod to the ’90s. Think Cindy Crawford: very sporty, very American, very fresh.” Products: Prep, Thickening Hairspray, Brilliantine, Dryspun Finish.

French Twist With Odile Gilbert for Kenra Professional at Suno What was the inspiration for this look? There is no inspiration! We wanted something modern. We prepped the hair with Kenra Platinum Style Prep, dried it, then took a little bit of the Platinum Thickening Glaze pomade to clean up the front. We put the headband on, and in the back we created a very loose braid, and used elastic to have a very short ponytail at the end that we tucked into the headband to have little wisps of hair. We French braided the hair, first at the scalp and then outward, so we could pull it loose.

What’s the hero product today? The Detangling Primer Spray, and then the Thickening Glaze. The pomade is very good because it’s dry…sometimes they look wet! What’s the biggest challenge? In a bad way? When the girls come with dirty and oily hair. We make sure to have shampoo and conditioner. If it’s very oily, it’s a big mistake to put the water on first—you have to put the shampoo first, then you wash. What’s it like working with Kenra Professional? It’s a very nice brand! I am obsessed with the Texturizing Taffy. The product fragrances smell amazing.

Sleek and Chic With Moroccanoil’s Antonio Corral Calero at Cushnie et Ochs! Calero created a sleek, mod style that mimicked the graphic lines in the collection. He separated hair into three distinct sections, slicked them to the head, and gathered them in the back, simulating a high halfpony. Products used: Moroccanoil Treatment, Smoothing Lotion, tourmaline ceramic hair dryer, ceramic paddle brush.

Yamin Levy, Designer, Booth: #3226 What is your design process like? To be honest, it’s all over the place. My daughters help me before I go to Bali but when I get there I “shoot in the dark.” I guess that’s how it works when you're a true artist!

COOPER & ELLA

Kara Mendelsohn, Designer and Founder, Booth: #4934 What is the story behind your brand? After almost two decades working in sales and merchandising for top designers, my experience led me to pinpoint a specific niche in the market for "date tops." I went after it and three years later, we’re carried at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, and Nordstrom, and over 250 specialty stores worldwide.

EKATERINA KUKHAREVA

MYSTIQUE

Ekaterina Kukhareva, Designer, Booth: #4548 What’s new with the brand? Beachwear and a more complete range of day dresses. For Spring '16 I explored folk-inspired prints and patterns, which I reinterpreted in a way that's distinctive, authentic, and true to my vision and brand DNA.

TEAM JAPAN

O MARCHÉ SHOWROOM

Des Petits Hauts, Booth: #7410 What is the story behind your brand? Des Petits Hauts was born when the designers realized there was a gap in the market. Brands weren't offering a lot of tops. Des Petits Hauts, which translates to "the little tops," offers natural fibers and attention to detail.

TEAM JAPAN

Jiro Kodarte, Representative, Booths: #5847, 3047, 5142, 405 What’s your favorite fall accessory? My favorites are any and all layering pieces, such as vests, boleros, capes, and ponchos. Basically, anything that can become a topper and added onto an outfit.

N12H

COOPER & ELLA EKATERINA KUKHAREVA

Nerissa Lee, Designer, Booth: #4247 What inspired your spring collection? This spring's collection was inspired by West Coast girls lounging by their pools! Flamingos, pineapples, pool floats, pool parties, all the fun things that come with warmer weather.

JONATHAN ADLER

Jonathan Adler, Designer, Booth: #4000 Who are your style icons? My holy trinity is David Hicks, Bonnie Cashin, and Alexander Girard.

Jeffrey Cayer, Co-Designer and Co-Founder, Booth: #4525 How did the brand get its start? TRYB212 had been brewing for a while and came together when Sonali Singh and I met. We’re seeing a lot of you this season! I came to the Fashion Media Awards. I came straight from the airport to attend. I saw it from the back. It’s great that you’ve reached this level. Thanks! Love your Kors campaigns. I’ve been working with him for many years. It’s unbelievable how he has such a point of view and how he celebrates life. There’s a positivity that I like. In fashion, I find that positivity isn’t considered as good as drama or angst. I love working with him. It’s one of my favorite campaigns that I do. How did your Instagram towel series come about? I was working with Kate Moss one day, and she went to have a shower. As she was coming out, I told her that I wanted to take a picture of her for my Instagram. She was in hurry so I said, “Don’t worry! I’ll do it just like this.” That started the whole thing. How did you get Anna Wintour to do it? We go back many, many, many years. We are a very solid team. She’s been my biggest supporter and my best editor. She’s a clever woman and I would never harm her, so I could only make her look the best I can. The interesting thing about that picture for me is that Anna is a very normal person. People don’t see that side of her, because she’s having to run an enormous business. We feel this distance, but at the end of the day, there is no distance. BFANYC.COM (3); GETTY IMAGES (3); PATRICK MCMULLAN.COM; STEFANIA CURTO (12); VITAL AGIBALOW (4); SHUTTERSTOCK
