It’s official, Karlie Kloss—and not AI!—is here to save magazines. IT-GIRL APPROVED JEWELRY!
Stylist to the stars Dani Michelle has launched her gorgeous jewelry brand MÉGA, and it’s already been spotted on longtime client Hailey Bieber. Want! What’s your approach with jewelry? I’m completely a “more is more” girl! Right now I’m wearing 21 rings. I stack between three to six rings per finger. And I like to mix fashion jewelry, vintage, and fine. Where did you get inspiration? From vintage pieces I’ve seen and interpreted to make more current. Pieces my mom would wear, my grandma would wear, things I’ve wanted and haven’t seen, and things that I just sketched up and created. Everything here I would wear; I can’t wait to get my own set! Talk us through the pricing. I wanted the brand to be accessible. I didn’t feel like there was a chic and timeless brand that was cohesively committed to this direction for a cool girl, with a reasonable price point. There were a lot of fine jewelry brands with this aesthetic, but not demi-fine. I wanted it to be possible for a customer to say, “I want this whole look…put it all in the cart!” Stylist-approved tips for traveling with jewelry? I think mini jewelry boxes are so great. If I need to be really careful, I take a hand cloth and roll pieces up so they can’t tangle. Micro trends you’re loving right now? Clutching your oversize purse under your arm, Hailey Bieber socks with heels, a white shirt always showing, and color pops like red. What kind of outfits are you dying to wear this holiday? A black sheer stocking with a great little look, and fresh, chic gold jewelry! What’s your biggest wish? Dani Michelle For everyone to feel loved and appreciated; this is the time to reflect and feel accomplished, appreciated, and proud.

Oh, what a night! During New York Fashion Week in September, the industry came together to celebrate many of its most illustrious power players at the glittering Rainbow Room in Manhattan for the 2023 installment of The Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards (FMAs). The awards honor the biggest names in fashion and media, and this year feted Sarah Jessica Parker, Pamela Anderson, Jeremy Scott, Martha Stewart, Emily Ratajkowski, Inez & Vinoodh, Grace Elizabeth, and more. Now in its 10th year, the FMAs saw friends reunite, points made, looks served, and the bar irrevocably raised for the next decade of fashion’s favorite annual event. Guests arrived to the iconic venue at the top of Rockefeller Center in their red carpet best before taking their seats for the ceremony, hosted by the inimitable emcee Alan Cumming, who had the crowd in stitches.

Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia presenting Shoe Brand of the Year, SJP Collection, to Sarah Jessica Parker
“I’ve never had the opportunity to have a platform to publicly thank [Sarah Jessica] without flowers, without dresses, just from the heart, and tell you that when we needed a person to flail our flag, you were one of the first ones to do so, and that is a kind of a favor that has allowed us to be here in front of you today. You have opened too many doors for us, countless. It just brings me back to the fact that probably everybody here considers her a fashion icon and a boss, but to us she is a person, a person who saw us from the day when we were helping Oscar develop all of his ideas. And she saw us working hard, and she believed in us.”—Fernando Garcia, Co-creative Director, Oscar de la Renta
Sarah Jessica Parker accepting Shoe Brand of the Year, SJP Collection
“I have run, I have danced, I have hailed cabs. I’ve walked a million miles in someone else’s shoes. They were borrowed, bought, found in an attic, pulled from a rubbish pile, on a runway, on someone else’s feet moments before, made 200 years ago, two months ago, two days ago, in a small village, a large city in Italy, Morocco, America, and countless other places. They have been taped on and ripped off, and I really think I loved every single pair. And because of those many miles I did come to know others better—the designers, the history, the artisans, the previous owners. For almost 10 years now, I have been in the shoe business. Every previous pair worn is gold standard. However, our North Star is our customer; they are now our inspiration. It is a joy to design with all of them in mind. It is an honor to be worthy of their patronage. And the best part is being on the floor sizing them, finding the perfect pair for them, having encounters that are wonderfully personal, sharing their dreams, their adventures and not infrequently, some of the more difficult moments of their life. And every single exchange is a gift.” —Sarah Jessica Parker

Brandon Thomas Lee presenting Style Icon to his mother, Pamela Anderson
“When [my brother] Dylan and I were growing up, you were such an inspiration and always taught us to be fearless, never be afraid to fail, always stand up for what is right, have empathy for others, not just people, but for things and animals. You inspired so many people, obviously for multiple different reasons. Not only just caring for animals and people and the environment, but you’ve had the bravery to wear and do whatever you want, whatever you think is cool, and that’s incredibly inspiring, and I think a lot of people are terrified to do things like that. You’ve always used your platform to stand up for others, and that’s something extremely selfless. I applaud you for that, and I think everyone else here does, too.”—Brandon Thomas Lee
Pamela Anderson accepting Style Icon
“At some point, obviously, I realized that maybe I wasn’t stylish and so I might as well just have fun. A lot of my looks were over the top, a little rock star, a lot of fun, but I realized that it was just brave and weird and kind of unique.”—Pamela Anderson

Winnie Harlow presenting Fashion Visionary to Jeremy Scott
“He’s always been an artist that is a step ahead, breaking barriers and norms to pave his own path and develop his own vision of how things should be. Defying the industry standards he values, not only what is important to him, but his team, colleagues, models, and others. He stands out as someone who supports so many people in the industry on a genuine human level. Not only is he an incredible creative, but the biggest advocate and supporter. No matter how intense or chaotic a Fashion Week is, he is always there on a personal level, checking in and lending an ear.”—Winnie Harlow

Wes Gordon presenting Martha Stewart, Cover Star of the Year, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue
“It is a great pleasure to be up here tonight to recognize my friend, the inimitable an fabulous Martha Stewart. Martha is the hardest- working and inspiringly creative person I’ve ever met. Her energy, passion, enthusiasm, and celebration of life is extraordinary. She works tirelessly showing us how to be the best version of ourselves while finding the possibility of joy and beauty all around us in our homes, our gardens, our kitchens. Martha has spent the last five decades teaching and inspiring the world. In the process, she built a business empire and became a star. But resting on her laurels and being idle is completely out of the question for her. There is just too much to do. She raises the bar for herself daily and keeps us all on our toes.” —Wes Gordon
“I am so honored to be chosen as the Fashion Media Awards Cover Star of the Year, but really, was there any other choice?…We had a great team and it was a very pleasant experience, and I don’t have anything to complain about and I like to complain. More than anything it’s a test of believing in yourself taking a chance. I have a motto that I live by every single day: When you’re through changing, you’re through. And my other motto is: Learn something new every day. And I did learn a lot by doing this kind of challenging job. I never think about how old anybody is; I hang out with more young people than older people. I do have some older friends that were sort of my age, but I hang out mostly with younger people, and that’s good because you get another perspective, so rather than preach to you all, just remember that aging well is the best revenge.”—Martha Stewart

Alexandra Daddario presenting Magazine of the Year, Elle, to Editor-in-Chief Nina Garcia
“There is a reason that powerful women know they can trust Elle to tell their stories. Since its founding in France in 1945, the magazine has always existed to uplift women.… In print, online, and on TikTok and Instagram, Elle was literally everywhere this year, and on everyone’s lips. It perfect sense to me that Elle would be named the Magazine of the Year.”—Alexandra Daddario
Editor-in-Chief Nina Garcia accepting Magazine of the Year, Elle
“Elle is made up of a group of unique, opinionated, sometimes difficult, wonderfully talented individuals who truly come together as a team. I consider myself extremely lucky to work with all of them, and I thank you for the opportunity to thank them. A magazine is really not about one person. It really is about the team. And I am very proud of my team; some of them are here. Every day, we get the chance to create something beautiful and meaningful along the way. We get to immerse ourselves in the magic that is this fashion industry, and I feel so blessed that we can be in this industry.”—Nina Garcia

Ziwe presenting Podcast of the Year, High Low With EmRata, to Emily Ratajkowski
“Emily has such a radical, compelling approach to life as a young American woman, and I’m so privileged to get to talk to her every day. Is this speech making you cry? That was my intention; I consider this a competitive sport. Really what I want to say is that Miss Emily has so many layers to her that you have got to really see, so while I’m giving her an award for Podcast of the Year, I can’t wait to give her an award for president of the United States. Please welcome Emily Ratajkowski.”—Ziwe
Emily Ratajkowski accepting Podcast of the Year, High Low With EmRata
“There’s a lot of people here tonight who I’ve had on the show, and I’m just so grateful for that. I think that fashion can be a little Zoolander-esque and a little competitive, and it’s been a beautiful experience to see, to build relationships like the one I have with Ziwe or Inez & Vinoodh, and so many other people here tonight that I really care about and really like. To have you all come together to support me and be a part of this podcast and have conversations about what their lives are like and what it’s like to be creative has been just so unexpected and such a joy.”—Emily Ratajkowski
Dove Cameron presenting Breakthrough Photographer of the Year to Elizaveta Porodina
“Elizaveta’s background is in psychology, which undoubtedly influences how she approaches her work and how she treats her muses with the utmost care. Whether it’s capturing a dancer in motion or a model or performer in a hyper-real state, her intuitive talent has led to some of the most impactful images in recent years. It’s even more impressive that so many of her most famous portraits were actually captured over Zoom as a result of lockdown measures. She is a true artist whose portfolio captures more than just the person in front of her, but their whole spirit and soul.”—Dove Cameron
“I want to say how humbled and blown away I am by being here. When I embarked on this journey of ditching the safe career being a psychologist and going toward being in the fashion industry, which my parents, well, let’s say didn’t approve of at first, I didn’t know where it would take me and was certainly a journey to the complete unknown. I just knew that I was searching for a way of expressing myself and tried to find a way to express the magic and the depth and the beauty that I was feeling in the world.”—Elizaveta Porodina

Stephen Gan presenting Creatives of the Year to Inez & Vinoodh
“I would like you all to embrace artistic collaborations, love who you love, uphold long-lasting relationships that require effort, but at the same time are effortless. Inez & Vinoodh have entered photographic master level—maybe not just tonight, but a few years ago. And so it is fitting that tonight we honor them with the Creatives of the Year award. As you can see applause seems to be the theme of the evening; I’d like everyone to give a round of applause to the creativity that resides in everyone in this room.”—Stephen Gan
Inez & Vinoodh accepting Creatives of the Year
“The developments in technology are giving us all endless possibilities for creation and independent ways of direct communication through images, sound, and film, but still no computer can replicate that exquisite, addictive experience of a shoot day, of that chance to make an incredible human part of your imagined world, and of changing people’s lives by inspiring and challenging new ideas. We thrive on the energy of a brilliant team of hair and makeup artists, stylists, movement directors, and lighting technicians, many of whom we’ve worked with for more than 20 years. It is the memories of these days of creation and togetherness that keep pushing us forward with unbounded curiosity every single day.” —Inez & Vinoodh
Martha Hunt presenting Fashion Innovator to Cinq à Sept founder Jane Siskin
“If you don’t already know Jane, it’s because she builds brands to speak for themselves. Jane is a storyteller, though it’s never about her. It’s about bringing joy to women through fashion, and it’s about doing the work and cultivating community. To me and so many others, Jane is not only an innovator in the industry, but she’s a friend.”—Martha Hunt
Cinq à Sept founder Jane Siskin accepting Fashion Innovator
“I still love this business. No one likes a sell report better than me. It’s my favorite thing on Monday morning; I can’t wait to see it! And having a customer tell me that they appreciate what we do is the most important thing that I think we bring as creators. Making people feel good, making people feel like we care about how they look and that we’re happy that they care about how they look is everything to me. I can’t really thank The Daily Front Row enough. I am just in awe of the crowd here tonight, so many people that I respect so much.”—Jane Siskin
Stéphane de la Faverie, Executive Group President at the Estée Lauder Companies, presenting Model of the Year to Grace Elizabeth
“Grace is a once-in-a-generation kind of beauty, and we all feel so incredibly lucky to have found Grace and to be continuously inspired by her. Not only does Grace bring a high sense of professionalism to everything she does, she more than lives up to her name. She’s gracious, warm, and compassionate; she carries the confidence of a person who knows exactly where she wants to be in life, especially in a pair of four-and-a-half-inch heels.” —Stéphane de la Faverie

“Being a working mom is not the easiest thing, even just being a working parent in general. There’s this self-inflicted guilt of “I’m the mom and I should be present at all times. It’s my job to be there.” But I also have this crazy, demanding, unpredictable job that will pave the way for a beautiful future for [my son], so it’s kind of a give and take, and having this award means that we are on the right track and those sacrifices my family makes have been recognized and it’s worth it. We’re working toward a beautiful future.”—Grace Elizabeth

The
DINNER PARTY Dave Rienzi and Dany Garcia
The Daily Front Row raised a glass to New York Fashion Week with “polished-toperformance” apparel brand GSTQ and its powerhouse founder Dany Garcia at our favorite Italian eatery, Scarpetta. The celebration took the form of an intimate dinner with tastemakers from near and far joining in the fun. Guests gathered at the upscale Madison Avenue restaurant’s candle-lit private dining room to catch up over a pre-dinner cocktail or two, not before taking advantage of the photo booth and flipping through the latest issue of The Daily, which greeted them upon arrival. They sipped margaritas and The Spark custom cocktails made with responsibly sourced ultra-premium tequila Teremana. The brand’s name fittingly means “spirit of the earth”—and oh, were people in good spirits ahead of Fashion Month. Photography by CAROLINE FISS
Scarpetta served up a delectable family-style meal of its crowd-pleasing dishes, including roasted beet salad, creamy polenta with truffled mushrooms, raw yellowtail, a pasta course of mouthwatering spaghetti, tagliatelle, and short rib and bone marrow agnolotti, plus roasted chicken, hanger steak, and espresso budino, ricotta cheesecake, and Valrhona chocolate cake to end the night on a sweet note. Among those in attendance were Tessa Brooks, Olay Noel, Aqua Parios, Cass DiMicco and Matthew Hoyle, Uche Nwosu and Clinton Moxam, Tefi Valenzuela, Keke Lindgard, Andrew Matarazzo, Justin Livingston, Zoi Lerma, Yana Bononi, Tiff Benson, Severine Keimig, Mariah Strongin, Bailee Henderson, Katerina Dune, Tyshon Lawrence, Dave Rienzi, Jerrold Smith, GSTQ CEO Katie Mayne, The Daily’s Eddie Roche and Freya Drohan, and more.

Valentina’s Day
While balancing a successful modeling career and family, Valentina Ferrer has also co-founded KAPOWDER, a booming wellness brand. The Argentina-born entrepreneur tells THE DAILY about the all-natural products and what it’s like being in a relationship with her superstar partner, J Balvin.

What was your upbringing in Argentina like? I grew up in the mountains. For my family, everything in life is a good time. My mom always says that life is to be enjoyed. If you’re enjoying it, keep doing it. We were a normal family. I was the first person in my family to come to the United States. How were you first discovered? I was discovered in Miami on Lincoln Road. They told me I had to meet [model manager] Erin Lucas. For Latinos, our dream was to come to the U.S. They offered me money for walking a show. With that I could pay for my food and everything. It was a dream. I couldn’t believe how much money I could make in one day. Erin told me I needed to do a book. She said that I could make it, but not in Miami. I had to go to New York. That’s why I moved to New York. You went on to become Miss Argentina in 2014! It taught me so much…to focus on me and not look to everyone else. You are with 100 girls for one month and if you focus on them, you will never have your powers. What have been some of your favorite memories as a model? Traveling to new places and meeting new people who have become like family. I love my work! Is acting something you’re still going to pursue? I have focused so much on my brand that I need to come back to acting. I love comedy. I love to laugh at myself. Let’s talk about your wellness brand, KAPOWDER. We’re a women-owned health and wellness company based in Australia. Our company was formed from the mutual desire to offer simple all-natural health products you can trust. We have Enlighten, which is an electrolyte powder with ingestible hyaluronic acid and is great for your skin. We have Enhance, which is a collagen powder that is also great for the skin. Everyone needs collagen! We have Recovery, which is good for relaxation and destressing; it’s a vegan and alkaline blend. We have quite a few different kinds. What are the benefits of these products? Everything is for your skin, nails, and hair, depending on what you use. How did you get into the wellness world? I was traveling so much and I’m celiac [an illness caused by an immune reaction to eating gluten]. I was struggling to find food that was healthy to eat and wouldn’t give me allergies. My passion is food. I love to cook. I love going to the supermarket. I thought, how can I show people how to eat healthy with goodtasting food and enjoy it? Something good for your body. You look beautiful, but diets are so bad for you inside. Don’t do a crazy diet. With years and years of working, my business partner, Sara Davey, and I made it happen. Ferrer and J Balvin What are some of the flavors? We have coconut, chocolate, mocha, and more! Sustainability is a part of the business. Talk to us about that. Our factory in Australia has solar panels and produces zero waste. All our products are natural and plant-based. Our packaging is 100 percent recyclable and/or reusable. We
tried from the beginning to be as sustainable as we can. We want to teach everyone how important this is. Where can people buy the products? Right now you can buy on kapowdersuperfood.com, and at Revolve and Amazon. You and J Balvin met on the set of one of his music videos. What’s been the secret to your success as a couple? I feel the secret is to talk. It’s not easy. Sometimes it’s easier to not talk about the problems, but when you talk, you get to the point and find the problem. You need a person who wants to find the solution. The key is to talk about it. Also, we work so hard all the time that it’s important to organize the calendar so we know we have family time. Your relationship gets a lot of attention. How do you feel about being in the limelight? I feel like I try to control that part a little bit and not show that much. The day you cross that line, you can’t get it back. How do you deal with the paparazzi? If you’re nice to them, it’s not that big of a problem. I haven’t had a problem with paparazzi or media yet. One time one person showed [son Rio’s] face and no media put it out. What’s it like being a mom? It’s the best! You realize you’re in love when you have a baby. You can love someone so much, but a baby…. It’s something inside you. You can see how he copies you. Rio’s always waiting to hug me. He gave us the balance. Are you going to have more kids? I think we need a girl! It’s Art Basel. Who are your favorite artists? I love Kos Cos because of his art and him. I’m learning all the time about art. Are you an artist yourself? No! J is the artist of the house. He can draw my face perfectly. He’s a creator. What are your plans for the holidays? I want to go to Argentina because it’s summer and so much fun. We have a huge family, and we all dance. My dad likes to play the guitar. If I don’t go there, maybe Turks and Caicos!

SuperMOM
Keeping up with Kate! While she was a mere baby herself when she got her modeling break at the tender age of 12, the radiant Kate Love is settling into life as a first-time mom having welcomed her little girl last spring. Along with her NBA superstar other half Kevin Love, she’s been leaning into this joyful chapter, settling into their new Miami surroundings and defining her next act, aptly named Love Kate. Here’s what’s ahead for the Loves. By FREYA DROHAN If you could choose a word to describe 2023, what would it be? I think for me and our family, it’s been “change.” We moved cities and had a baby! How is your pup, Vestry, taking to being a big sister? She’s a queen! In the beginning, she was a bit suspicious as to what the purpose of this new infant was. [Laughs] But she loves Florida, she loves sunbathing, and now with the baby she checks on her and brings her teddies. What’s your journey as a first-time mom been like so far? Everything changes. I had the baby during the finals of the NBA playoffs, which was eventful! We moved to the Hamptons and had a nice baby bubble initially, which was amazing. Then we were in the city for Fashion Week, and now we’re back in Florida. We’ve moved around a bit, but she’s been so adaptable. She’s pretty relaxed, considering the chaos she was born into, but she’s great and so much fun. She changes every day, but her little personality is developing.
Where do you fall in your family? Are you used to having kids around? Kevin and I are both middle children, and both of our brothers have kids but they live in different places. A lot of my girlfriends—models and friends from home— have been great to call for advice about these weird new changes. Thank God for FaceTime! Have any of your industry peers in particular been helpful to turn to? Emily DiDonato has been one of my closest friends since we started modeling. We had our babies about five weeks apart! We’re in communication every day, and it’s so nice to have a friend like that. She just launched a podcast about life and career advice, right? Yes, and I’m a guest on it! Talk to us about your holiday plans, your first as a young family! We’re based in Miami for most of the year. Our life is totally catered to basketball, but I got lucky this year. Miami Heat play the Knicks and the Nets just after Thanksgiving, so we get to be in New York for the holiday. Then it’s our first tropical Christmas; I’m still picturing what it’s going to be like seeing palm trees in December. Do you have new traditions you’re looking forward to implementing? Yeah, the baby’s so little so we’re figuring it out. I’m buying some books that we can have to read to her the night before Christmas. Miami Heat are playing a game this year on Christmas Day, so that’s something to look forward to. Games on Christmas Day? Who knew! It’s a big NBA thing; it’s always a big event! It’s also great that Kevin is home. If it was an away game, he would be gone for Christmas. It’s nice you can be in NYC for Thanksgiving, and Miami for some sun at Christmas. I love it. I’ve been decorating to make both homes feel cozy and festive. It’s really the dream that we were always hoping to have one day. Anything on your wish list this season? I’ve been so inspired by Khaite. Everything is so beautiful. And I always love Saint Laurent.
DAILYFRONTROW.COM
Are you a good gift giver? I’m usually really good. I’m always excited to get gifts for people, but Kevin doesn’t really like receiving gifts, which is a funny trait! I usually try to style my family and get them something fashion-forward. I get matching pajamas for my sister and I, too; that’s our tradition. Styling the baby must be a lot of fun! It’s the most fun ever; girls’ clothes are so cute. Let’s give our readers a refresh! You grew up in Canada. Did you always want to be a model? I grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver. I was always tall and skinny, a head above the rest of my class, but I don’t think I even knew about modeling. I was discovered, as they say, at 12, so I was pretty young. The very next week, I was shooting for Abercrombie Kids. I loved it and thought it was so much fun. Then it just kept building and building. When did you move abroad? I went to Paris out of high school. My agents there took me under their wing and I lived in a model apartment. I met everyone, built my book, and wherever I’d get a job, I’d go and stay there and live out of suitcases for months—Milan, London, Tokyo. I was in Paris for a long time, so I was lucky that I had gone to a French school in Canada, so I could communicate. When I moved to New York City, it was great to be so much closer to my family. It must be nice to be in a new calmer chapter after living out of luggage for years. People always say to us, between the NBA and my work, would we even be comfortable not in chaos!? But if we’re together and can make a home out of it, we’re good. Giving birth aside, what’s been a professional highlight of your year? I feel like I was kind of out of it! I didn’t reveal [my pregnancy] to the world for a long time as I didn’t feel great. But I’ve been working on Love Kate, figuring out the collaborations and partnerships side. Tell us more about Love Kate. It’s something I started a while ago. I was trying to figure out how to work with different brands that fall under the umbrella of health, wellness, fitness, home décor, and clean beauty, but in a more meaningful way—not just a shoot that’s over in one day. It’s identifying ways to work with companies I’m passionate about, whether it’s investing, partnering, or being involved in creative direction. It’s kind of like a brand incubator, but it’ll depend on the project. Sounds fun! What do you hope for more of in 2024? I think at this point it’s trying to figure out where I can find the best balance. I want to be a present mom, but also be inspired by work, be creatively fulfilled, and working toward developing my own brand. I have a few different directions that [Love Kate] is going in. My hands are in a few pots!

ONE &ONLY Pat Cleveland has had a once-in-a-generation career since coming onto the scene as one of the first Black models in fashion in the 1960s. She’s been photographed by Irving Penn, Andy Warhol, and Richard Avedon, among others, and walked in shows for just about every major brand out there. She tells THE DAILY about some of her great moments and how she wants to be remembered.
By EDDIE ROCHE Photography by JORDAN MILLINGTON LIQUORICE Stylist: ELANUR ERDOGAN Assistant Stylist: ALANNA BENEROFF Hair: KAZU KATAHIRA Makeup: MITCH YOSHIDA
On her first experience being an in-house model in the 1960s “It was a very sophisticated look. You know, no laughing, no smiling, nose in the air. [Says sarcastically] ‘This look is too good for you, darling.’ But anyway, in reality it was all just a big tease and those girls were wonderful. I got to work with some of those [models] that were from the ’40s and ’50s. It was another game. The faces were so heavily powdered—not that we don’t do that today! But they looked like they were not real. They were the original mannequins of the houses of the designers.” On working with designers like Halston and Oscar de la Renta “They were the top—Halston, Oscar; those boys knew how to reel in the names of society. People just loved them; they were so gorgeous. The way they made the ladies feel. It was more than a dress; it was a romance. It was a definite romance because they could make [their customers] feel perfect. They could dress a lady and make her feel the way she wants to feel. Halston draped them in cashmere and chiffon, and they floated through the room as though they were in heaven. Halston and Oscar were the couture designers of America. Oh, my God, [getting to] work with them all…it just made me feel appreciated and loved, just being in their presence. They had charisma, they had talent, and they were great leaders because what they did is they made everyone feel that they were also part of the creativity. They made all the people feel that ‘this also belongs to you.’ ” On the creative scene in NYC in the 1970s “For clothes and fashion, you went to Studio 54, because everyone dressed beautifully there. And the music was good! You know, in those days all the houses of fashion were not separate. It was like we were all family. We couldn’t wait to go out and be together and dance the night away. We worked hard and we played hard. New York had a different schedule; it wasn’t 24 hours a day. It was 9 to 5 from Monday to late Thursday afternoon, then you would get in your limo to Fire Island.” DAILYFRONTROW.COM

I want to be remembered as a little stepping stone in the garden of life.”
On her love for dancing and moving through the world with rhythm “Actually, during lockdown, I put extra disco balls in my house to remind me of Studio 54! It was all about dancing. Fashion is dancing. Put one foot in front of the other, and it’s a dance. Just think of it like you don’t have to do too much. Just the fact that you can move from this place to that place is a great lesson. And if you dress like a Christmas tree, it actually helps even more. I try to do that every day.” On inspiring others and breaking barriers as a Black model “I don’t know…we’re put on this earth at a certain time to do something, and I did the best I could. If it helps someone else realize, ‘Hey, this is a path you can go down. Don’t be afraid, honey, come on, let’s go!’—then great. When I meet new girls and they’re shaking and they don’t want to go on the runway, I say, ‘You can do it! I did it, come on.’ I think that’s why I’m still in it. I feel great. The other day I was doing the Marrisa Wilson show and I had to dance. All the girls and I were backstage, and they circled around me and gave me a hug! All of them, there were like 15 of them, they said, ‘Thank you for what you did.’ I said, ‘I didn’t do anything. You’re doing it for me now!’ I feel like, yes, the girls that came up at my time, maybe they didn’t
have the breaks that they deserved in all things, but we got what we could get and the next generation will get a little bit more and that’s how the evolution goes.” On writing and art “The only reason I like writing is that I like scribbling! Writing is just like drawing and painting and making clothes…all of those things blend into one another. Even going out and meeting people, it’s threading the pearls [on a string]. Everybody is like a pearl of their own effervescence and you just see them all sparkling together, and it’s like you’re in this jewel box or something!” On one of her many mantras “I’m just saying—don’t limit yourself, do the things that bring you joy. That’s why I like singing. [Sings] ‘Oh, the way you wear your hat, the way you sip your tea! The meaning of all that, oh no, you can’t take that away from me!’ ” On how she wants to be remembered “I just want to be remembered because I did work hard and I hope it means something. You know, I want to leave a little something. Show that I was there and I did that—so somebody else might say, ‘Oh, I could be there and do that.’ I want to be remembered as a little stepping stone in the garden of life.”

ElevatedELVES
’Tis The
Season!
Elves at Nemacolin
Santa’s little helpers never looked so haute. At Nemacolin’s newly reimagined Hardy’s Holiday Village, which took almost six months to come to fruition, the elves have been outfitted by one of New York’s most exciting rising designers, Jackson Wiederhoeft. It turns out that Wiederhoeft and PJ Magerko Liquorice, vice president of Brand Strategy at Nemacolin, go way back, having met as young creatives in the city. We caught up with Magerko Liquorice to hear about the inspiration for the best-dressed woodland characters you’ll ever see—which follow themes like Dancer Elves, Adult Elves, Diva Elves, and Cabaret Elves—as well as how the concept for the experience stems from a long-running family tradition at the Farmington, Pennsylvania, resort. You and Jackson met at college. Tell us more about what drew you to each other. We clicked during our freshman year at Parsons School of Design. Meeting Jackson was my favorite part of Parsons before I transferred to NYU. I was intrigued because he was wearing a Halloween T-shirt in the middle of May.
Tell us what the holiday season is like at Nemacolin. What are some of your favorite things to do there? The holidays at Nemacolin are truly a winter woodland wonderland filled with lights, warmth, and magic. This year, my favorite thing to do on the property is to walk through Hardy’s Holiday Village and watch the guests’ reactions to the performances and interactions with the elves. When did you start thinking about the elf outfits for this project? After reviewing the design by [production designer] Angelic Rutherford with my mom—Maggie Hardy, owner and CEO of Nemacolin—and the team, I was tasked to find a troupe of elves that could live and perform at Nemacolin during the holiday season. I called the head elf himself, Austin Goodwin, who always understands the assignment. Next, I called Jackson, because we needed them to be the most elevated elves anyone has ever seen. I love the world of Wiederhoeft because of the undercurrent of silliness and sophistication, which is also synonymous with Nemacolin’s brand ethos. Who is on your nice list this year? My mom, Maggie, is always at the top of my nice list for her generosity and vivacious spirit. How long has it taken for everything to become a reality? The set design for the village was presented in March and everything snowballed (pun intended!) from there. The finishing touches were added on Thanksgiving, and we opened the doors on November 24th! Do you have any fun or unconventional holiday traditions that you celebrate every year? Hardy’s Holiday Village originated as a one-weekend concept for our annual family party we call Hardy Holidays, which we’ve hosted at Nemacolin for decades. We decided to extend the invitation to the Holiday Village to guests and members throughout the season. It will now become a staple for the holidays at Nemacolin. What are you most excited for this season? I would say that the focus this year is on generosity, both toward others and oneself, making it a truly special time for everyone. On November 24th, Nemacolin celebrated three major events—the opening of the Grand Lodge, Hardy’s Holiday Village, and my mom’s million-dollar donations to local community and hospitality education organizations. What’s one gift you’re hoping for this year? Peace on earth and internally for every individual.

Tequila Time!
Nashville has been the backdrop to not one but two dreams come true for Ivey Childers. The former baker has parlayed her perseverance when it comes to perfecting the quintessential recipe into a new chapter, with the recent launch of Southbound—a luxurious premium (and already award-winning!) tequila that guarantees an elevated cocktail-making experience, while also being ideal for sipping by itself. There’s plenty more up her sleeve, with new partnerships, activations, and a Web series with special guests in the pipeline. (Might we see Dolly Parton, who’s a fan of her cakes, in the mix? Only time will tell!) Here’s what you need to know!

new tequila brands all the time, and I would get different results from my mixes. I love tequila because the category is so interesting. I love it because, much like wine, tequila has a profile. I was constantly tweaking my cocktails when one day I realized, it wasn’t the balance in my mixes, it was the tequila profile. This led me on a journey to learn more about profiles. Fast-forward, after partnering with a producer and a master distiller, and Southbound was born. What made the name “Southbound” the right fit? I wanted others to feel something instantly with the brand name—a connection and a call to action. Southbound is an invitation to unwind and to rediscover premium tequila in new ways. Simultaneously, it also represents my own journey Southbound to tequila, Jalisco, Mexico, where I pursued a path to find a profile that I couldn’t find. When did you launch, and what have been some milestones? We launched in August of this year. We had an incredible party in Nashville and so many people came out to support. My dear friend Carrie Underwood has been such a huge supporter along the way, as well as some other incredible friends in the industry, including Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, Cody Alan, and Jay Cutler. What’s the most rewarding thing about being a female founder in the tequila industry? Having a seat at the table and offering my point of view as a female tequila consumer and home entertainer. Men also love tequila, but women really love tequila, and it has been fun to show up and have a say in what I wanted to find in a brand. I solved my own problem as a consumer and now I get to share it with others!

Your first act was creating your Nashville bakery Ivey Cake! Tell us more. My creativity as a recipe developer has always been the magic button for my career path. I developed more than 40 different cake flavor combinations, tracing back to 2000, when I tried one recipe out of a cookbook and it didn’t turn out. That led to curiosity, and I spent all my free time recipe-developing cakes. Once friends tasted them, word spread, and my phone never stopped ringing for orders. Who were some people you’ve designed cakes for? I was the wedding cake baker for Carrie Underwood, had multiple appearances on Food Network, local Nashville TV, and many other celebrity celebrations such as Katy Perry’s birthday on American Idol, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey Musgraves, Kim and Brad Paisley, Jessie James Decker, Kelly Clarkson, CMA Awards, CMT Music Awards, ACM Music Awards, Grand Ole Opry, and on and on. How did it set the foundation for starting your next business? Being a trusted baker in a booming city and for people of influence was impactful. Nashville has watched my entrepreneurial career unfold and witnessed my energetic hustle. The organic way I laid a foundation, launching a tequila with a reputation as a recipe developer has played an instrumental role in credibility with the industry, the consumer, and overall brand messaging. In what other ways has "Music City” shaped you? I have lived in Nashville since 1999. I love living here because this is a place where my dreams are nurtured and lived out as an entrepreneur. It’s fascinating to watch people pursue their passions. My husband is a bass player and is one of the lucky ones that plays for a living. Artists pursuing their dreams here are so Carrie Underwood and Childers brave because the path of pursuit doesn’t always pan out, and there’s no guarantee. This town is full of possibilities, and that keeps the synergy alive for me in my continued dreams. So how did tequila come into the picture? Once Ivey Cake became a full-time small business, I had less and less time to create. I was running HR, hiring, training, quality control, and growing my business. I missed being back in that kitchen. So I would come home from long days at the bakery and create cocktail recipes with tequila. It was quick and fun, and I could wind down. I would try
Randi’s Recap Corcoran power broker and longtime Hamptons poster girl Randi Ball is ending the year on a high. THE DAILY caught up with her for a Quarter 4 powwow and to get the scoop on what’s happening with the market Out East.
What are some recent career milestones? I had the pleasure of representing an absolutely amazing family this summer as their buyer’s agent. We saw two homes and put in a full-price offer on one of them that day. I knew that they would love the home I picked out for them. We closed within 30 days! The last ask was $25 million. What’s a favorite memory of 2023? I rediscovered my love for concerts and found a group of women who share my passion. Not just live music but big shows! I finally got to see Stevie Nicks and snuck in two Pink concerts. I’m also looking forward to seeing U2 at The Sphere in Las Vegas soon. What are you most proud of this year? I’m most proud of what my children accomplished in 2023. My daughter, Samantha, got married to an amazing man. My older son, Jonah, got into his dream university, Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, and my youngest son, Theo, rocked it as East Hampton High School’s star quarterback.
What have recent sales proved about the Hamptons market? The third and fourth quarters of 2023 have been strong for my business. There’s no doubt that people still want to live Out East and that they’re willing to pay for what they want. I’m sick of whining about this, but I really do wish there was more inventory to sell! I’m grateful for all the wonderful customers and clients that came my way this year. What are your predictions for the next rental season? Based on what I see so far, we’re going to have a busy rental season in 2024. We were a bit slower in 2023 than past years, seeing as European travel was very much in fashion. With what is currently going on in the world, families are going to want to stick closer to home this upcoming summer. I’m advising my rental customers not to wait to secure a property. What are you hoping for in the new year? I’m really looking forward to 2024! My goal is to get in great shape, work even harder, and take many mini vacations. My greatest hope for the new year is for peace in the world.
