SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Each year, the Strawberry Days Association awards service-based scholarships to seniors who live in Pleasant Grove and Lindon. This is our way of telling the community “thank you” for the countless hours volunteers give to help make Strawberry Days a success. In the spirit of those volunteers, the scholarships are awarded to those who exemplify what it means to be service-oriented. The 2021 Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Service Scholarship has been awarded to Ashley Combs, Anna Passmore and Joshua Cannon. Ashley Combs has made service a part of everything she does, from volunteering as a swim coach for kids with special needs to being a part of fundraising efforts for Primary Children’s Hospital and the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake and drawing portraits of loved ones that have passed. Her attitude has been, “The world has given me a lot, and it’s my job to pay it back through service.” Ashley’s teachers describe her as kind, professional, enthusiastic, hard-working and an outstanding ambassador. Anna Passmore is described by those around her as the “hardest-working, behind-the-scenes, never-asking-for-credit person there is.” When asked to

describe service, Anna said, “Service doesn’t have to be a big presentation or receive any recognition.” With that mindset, Anna has quietly served in a number of ways, including helping to serve Thanksgiving dinners with Lindon City, organizing and putting together birthday kits for Tabitha’s Way and fundraising for the Make a Wish Foundation, just to name a few. Joshua Cannon has had to be creative in his service. Finding himself serving on several student government boards and service organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic has made doing traditional activities not an option. Add to that the extra and new stress the pandemic placed on stu-

dents and Joshua had to think outside of the box. His service has included recognizing teachers with notes and a lunch, organizing an effort to put uplifting notes on students’ cars and much more. One teacher said of Joshua, “He has consistently shown me his dedication to doing what is honorable and right…. He will be a great asset to his community throughout his life.” Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and scholarship applicants for their dedicated service in making our city one of the very best to be a part of. Without you, Strawberry Days would not be the amazing celebration that it is.
