Chamber Board Chair Message I have had the unique opportunity to serve the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce as a member, an employee and, now, as chair of the chamber’s Board of Directors. My membership began 10 years ago when I was invited to a Noon Networking event by then Chamber Executive Director Cary Hanks. I had no idea how much the chamber would benefit my business. The people she introduced me to that day would become mentors, clients and dear friends that are still a huge part of my life and my business. Being part of this organization has allowed me to work closely with some great people who serve our members and our community. Though opinions and ideas can differ sometimes, at the heart of the work is the desire to see our community and businesses continue to thrive. The chamber offers much more than a place to exchange business cards. It continuously works to cultivate new opportunities to foster economic visibility, development and resources for our businesses and members. The strength and success of Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce comes from individuals within our membership who volunteer their time, talents and expertise to create initiatives for

businesses to meet the challenges of our growing economy. The chamber will always promote, produce and serve its members through educational opportunities such as our Quarterly Workshops and our annual South County Business Summit; brand recognition opportunities through sponsorships for events such as the Easter Egg Hunt and Main Street Trick or Treat; and forging partnerships and relationships with community and business leaders. “Bridging community and business” is not just a catch phrase. It is the strategic plan for continued growth that allows us to reflect our values of connection, growth, advocacy, community prosperity and fiscal responsibility. The Chamber: For businesses and the community Do chambers of commerce exist to help businesses? Or are they meant to support the community? The answer is simple: both. Through a wide range of activities, events and initiatives, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce strives to promote a vibrant local economy while also building up its two member communities. Business leaders who join the chamber can experience these benefits themselves and witness how chamber membership can promote growth in their business, their professional relationships and their community service. “The chamber helps me as a business so I can be more successful and better serve our community,” said Aaron Lowe, administrator at Canyon View Medical Group in Spanish Fork. “Our business is a better business because of our affiliation with the chamber.”

NETWORKING Often, the largest benefit of chamber membership is simply meeting other business leaders, learning from them and creating friendships. This is known as networking. “The chamber, to me, has been about networking, a lot of networking, and it’s helped me build confidence,” said Randi Kaufman, current chair of the Spanish Fork/ Salem chamber’s board of directors and owner of RK Creative Studio. Kaufman joined the chamber 10 years ago and quickly made friends — and business contacts. “Everyone was so willing to give help or advice or support in one way or another,” Kaufman said. “A majority of my clients come through the chamber through word of mouth and through networking.” Lowe said networking also involves discovering businesses in the community one may not know about. Lowe’s business was considering doing some video promotion; at a chamber event, he connected with someone that does video marketing.

CONNECTING WITH RESOURCES The Spanish Fork/Salem chamber reg-

ularly works with its members to connect them with various programs, services and resources that are available to help them better run their businesses. “I think the primary goal of the chamber is to provide resources to businesses, whether large or small. and then through that to educate them about how their involvement can be beneficial to both the community and their businesses,” Kaufman said. For example, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and businesses found themselves in need of items such as face masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray and disposable gloves, the chamber worked with Spanish Fork City to offer the SF-19 Business Relief Program. Through this program, businesses were able to place orders for these items. The city purchased the items using federal COVID funds, and the items were distributed by the chamber. Workshops and training events are also offered regularly by the chamber to help its members improve their skills, whether it be in communication, leadership, marketing or other areas. Lowe said he attended a chamber event where Mountainland Technical College described a program it offered through which businesses could obtain specific training

for their employees at a discounted rate or even without cost. At the time, his medical group was spending more than $100,000 per year on education and training for its employees. He approached MTECH for more information; his group now utilizes the MTECH program at a savings of about $20,000 per year. “It’s been something that spurred financial benefit as well as education benefit and patient success,” Lowe said.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY Each year, the Spanish Fork/Salem chamber sponsors several events that bring the community together. These include an Easter Egg Hunt, the Winter Lights Parade and the Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market. With the Spanish Fork Rotary Club, the chamber conducts a golf tournament each year that raises money for scholarships. “It’s really about just supporting the community and collaborating with the city and bringing good things to bear in the community,” Lowe said. Through these events, the chamber helps enhance the quality of life in Spanish Fork and Salem. At the same time, community members become more aware of local businesses and what they offer.

PROMOTION & AWARENESS Through its various membership benefits, the chamber helps promote local businesses and keeps them informed of local issues that may affect them. Its Shop Local program encourages residents to keep their dollars in their local area. Business of the Month and ribbon-cutting ceremonies promote new and existing businesses. Other marketing opportunities include advertising on the chamber website and in its annual magazine, sponsorship opportunities, coupon emails and features on local cable television channel Spanish Fork Channel 17. Through emails, publications and events, the chamber provides information about legislative activities and issues while also acting as a voice for business for local and state leaders.

EASTER EGG HUNT Each year on the Saturday before Easter, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce presents its Easter Egg Hunt. Thousands of plastic eggs are hidden in the grass at the Spanish Fork Sports Park as part of the event, which has become a tradition for many families in the city. Between 1,500 and 2,000 children ranging in age from infants to 10 years old participate each year. This year’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 16. The Sports Park is located at 295 W. Volunteer Drive (950 S. Main), Spanish Fork.

SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT Each year, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce joins with the Spanish Fork Rotary Club to sponsor a scholarship golf tournament at The Oaks at Spanish Fork golf course. Money raised through the tournament funds college scholarships in the amount of $1,500 per scholarship for students at local high schools. Students interested in applying to be considered for one of these scholarships should contact their school counselor.

FARMER’S MARKET Operated by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday morning from late July/ early August to the end of October in a field at 775 W. Center (just north of the Spanish Fork Police Department). Vendors at the market offer items such as locally grown vegetables and fruits, freshly baked bread and homemade salsa and jams. SOUTH COUNTY BUSINESS SUMMIT Once a year, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the South County Business Summit. Open to chamber members and nonmembers, the summit has featured regionally and nationally known speakers addressing topics important to businesses such as communication, training and social media marketing. The summit also provides time for those attending to network, connect and collaborate with other business leaders. The Springville-Mapleton and Payson-Santaquin chambers are also invited to attend the Business Summit.

HARVEST MOON HURRAH Each September, the Spanish Fork Arts Council sponsors the city’s Harvest Moon Hurrah, an event celebrating the harvest season and the arts. Held in Spanish Fork’s Library Park at Center and Main streets, the Harvest Moon Hurrah includes harvest-related games, crafts and activities as well as live music performances. As part of the Harvest Moon Hurrah, a local farmer donates 500 pumpkins and the chamber of commerce purchases craft items that children can use to decorate the pumpkins as jack-o-lanterns.

SCARECROW CONTEST & MAIN STREET TRICK OR TREAT Each October, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Scarecrow Contest, a competition encouraging local businesses and individuals to design their most creative scarecrow and put it up for display in the community. Through the contest, 20 to 30 scarecrows are set up along Spanish Fork’s Main Street in the area between Center Street and 400 North, adding fun decorations to the historic downtown area during the Halloween season. The chamber also sponsors the annual Main Street Trick or Treat event in Spanish Fork. Local businesses are invited to participate by handing out candy to trick-or-treaters during the event.

WINTER LIGHTS PARADE On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year, Main Street in Spanish Fork is lit up with festive floats and wagons as part of the Winter Lights Parade, an event sponsored by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Businesses, families and other groups participate in the parade each year with the parade attracting entries such as hay wagons, city floats, horse riding clubs and marching bands. Musical groups also participate, including Christmas carolers, and the parade ends with a visit from Santa Claus who rides through the city on his sleigh. After the parade, there is a tree-lighting ceremony held at the city building and Santa is available to visit and take pictures with the children.

Chamber Quarterly Workshops When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and people were unable to meet together, the Spanish Fork Salem Chamber of Commerce moved its meetings online. Part of this included holding various trainings in the virtual environment. The training meetings were a success, and when chamber members began meeting together again, the chamber board decided to continue these efforts in person. Thus began the chamber’s Quarterly Workshops, held once every three months to assist members in accessing training and finding resources. “The Quarterly Workshops were set up as a kind of mini continuing education course where you can come and learn about different aspects of business,” said Rand Kaufman, chair of the chamber’s board of directors. Topics so far have included utilizing social media for business marketing, emergency planning in the business environment, leadership and how businesses can become involved in the community. The chamber brings in professionals in the various areas being addressed to teach the

workshops. The Quarterly Workshops are open to the public; the cost is $25 for members of the chamber and $35 for nonmembers. Kaufman said the chamber has had attendees who have been able to solve problems and makes positive changes

Farmer’s Market location change means more room for vendors Construction of Spanish Fork’s new library next to the Spanish Fork City Offices meant fewer parking spaces on site — and that meant the city’s popular farmer’s market would need to change its location. Held since its beginning in the parking lot behind the city offices at 40 S. Main, the Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market headed west last summer and opened in a vacant field at 775 W. Center (just north of the Spanish Fork Police Department). The market is operated by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. While moving the market was a change for many accustomed to attending the event in the center of town, the new location proved to have one major benefit

over the prior one: more space. With all the booths set up in the limited space of the parking lot, it could get difficult maneuvering through the highly attended market, said Whitney Ferguson, organizer of the Farmer’s Market. “There’s an asphalt walking path down there that’s about twice as wide as a sidewalk, so you don’t feel nearly so crowded,” Ferguson said. “It just felt more spacious.” There was also room to add more vendors, she said, adding that she expects the market to offer even more booths next year. The Farmer’s Market will continue operating at 775 W. Main through at least the summers of 2022 and 2023.

FARMER’S MARKET 2022 The 2022 Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market will begin on Saturday, July 30, and continue every Saturday after that through Saturday, Oct. 29. The market is open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 775 W. Center, Spanish Fork. Vendors interested in participating should contact the chamber at 801-798-8352.

The Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday morning from late July/early August to the end of October. Vendors at the market offer items such as locally grown vegetables and fruits, freshly baked bread and homemade salsa and jams. The Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market is unique in that only food products are sold. There are no arts and crafts items for sale; it is a true farmer’s market. It also only allows vendors from inside Utah participate. The selection varies through the summer according to which vendors participate and what produce is in season, but visitors can expect to see items such as potatoes, watermelons, squash, corn, peaches, pears, pies, homemade bread, honey and caramel apples. “There’s a lot more there than people might think,” Ferguson said. “I personally was introduced to a whole bunch of vegetables and produce that I’d never heard of.” Those participating in the federal SNAP benefits program can use their SNAP card to make purchases at the market.

Annual South County Business Summit Business leaders from throughout southern Utah County will come together for an event this fall where they will network and learn how to better navigate the current local business climate. The annual South County Business Summit will be held for the third time on Thursday, Oct. 20. This one-day event features speakers with expertise in business and related topics as well as provides time for those attending to get to know each other and share information about their businesses. “It’s very important for business leaders to get together,” said David Rowley, vice chair of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and president and CEO of Rowley and Associates. “Meeting together and networking is one of the best ways to generate new sales and to generate opportunities for businesses to work together.” The Business Summit is held in the reception center at The Oaks at Spanish Fork golf course. The event is hosted by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and members of the Payson Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce and the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce are invited to attend. The day begins with breakfast and a keynote speaker. Following a break, a

second speaker addresses the summit, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, a third speaker completes the summit. Half-hour breaks are scheduled between speakers so attendees can network and learn about each other’s businesses and also so they can answer any calls or emails as part of keeping their own business running. There are also prize giveaways during the day and an area where interested businesses can set up a small display featuring the services they offer. Rowley said when scheduling speakers, efforts are made to address topics relevant to the challenges businesses are currently facing. “We try to make it pertinent to the business atmosphere at the time,” he said. Last year, the summit featured speakers Desmond Lomax of the Arbinger Institute, May Snowden of Snowden & Associates Inc., and Francis Gibson, who at the time was serving in the Utah Legislature. The summit is open to the public and the cost to members of the three chambers is $75 (the fee for nonmembers is slightly higher). The fee includes breakfast, lunch and snacks during the day. ‘Chamber Today’ program going outside the studio The Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is taking its “Chamber Today” television show outside of the studio and into the community, featuring local businesses and organizations where they operate. With an eye toward keeping the community informed about the local business climate, the chamber began presenting “Chamber Today” on Spanish Fork Channel 17 in 2019. The show featured host Aaron Stern doing interviews in studio of people from various organizations and businesses in the community. Now, Necole Hammond has joined Aaron Stern on the show as an in-thefield reporter giving viewers a look at businesses’ actual operations. The new approach to the television show began in mid-2021. “The whole premise of it is to do more of getting behind the scenes of businesses and learning about what different businesses do, what products they make,” said Jesse Cardon, a member of the chamber’s Executive Board. The programs also familiarize residents with business people in the area, Cardon said, so they can feel like they know them when they patronize their businesses. In addition to Spanish Fork Channel 17,

He has served for the last two years as a member of the executive board of the chamber. Additionally, he runs a very busy business that has brought numerous jobs to the city, chairs the city planning commission, and, in his spare time, ran for city council. COMMUNITY ACTION AWARD Fellas Chop Shop The Community Action Award honors the partnerships and organizations that leverage their resources, expertise and talent to make a positive impact in the community. Since joining the chamber, Fellas Chop Shop has embodied what it means to be a part of a community. On Veteran’s Day each year, it has provided free services for active and retired veterans. In 2021, the business provided 94 veterans with services as part of this effort. They have offered discounts to those service men and women who put their lives on the line each day to show their gratitude for their sacrifice. Owner Mersadies Reber has also stepped up in many ways to help and support the chamber. She filled a vacant board position and has participated in sidewalk sales, the Main Street Trick or Treat event and other activities.

SALEM CITY MAYOR'S AWARD Sterling & Cynthia Rees Sterling & Cynthia Rees have dedicated much of their free time to helping make the Salem community a great place to live and raise a family. They have constantly worked behind the scenes to foster great relationships and solutions for Salem. Sterling has served as a Salem City Council member for the past 12 years. He served on the board of the Utah Municipal Power Agency while serving as a council member, where he kept an eye on the electrical system in Salem and did a lot to support public power and help Salem residents. Sterling has overseen many different programs in Salem. Each year during Salem Days, Sterling has chaired the annual Salem Days Golf Tournament and supported all the events. Sterling has a great love for the City of Salem and its residents and has always looked out for the best interests of Salem. CHAMBER EXCELLENCE AWARD Mayor Steve Leifson The Chamber Excellence Award is reserved for a person or organization that not only embodies what it means to be a chamber member but has also made significant contributions to the cause of economic progress and vitality within the community. As a business owner, as a city councilman and as mayor of Spanish Fork City, Steve Leifson has led the way for economic growth. He has focused on ways to help our small business community thrive while also embracing opportunities to have other companies locate in the area. SPANISH FORK CITY MAYOR'S AWARD Chief Steve Adams Steven G. Adams retired in January 2022 after serving 37 years in public safety. Adams began his career in law enforcement in 1985 with Mapleton City and was hired by Spanish Fork City in 1988. He was named Spanish Fork’s chief of police in 2012. During his tenure as director of public safety, Spanish Fork grew from 28 to 42 full-time police officers and transitioned to 24-hour staffing for EMS out of the newly constructed Station 62. As chief of police, Adams implemented the K9 unit, honor guard and safe school walks. He also hired a full-time victim advocate, provided Narcan for each officer to carry, started the Public Safety Night Out and placed police radios to every local school. Adams has earned many awards including the Valor Award, Lifesaving Award (three separate times), Utah Police Officer of the Year in 2005, Veterans of Foreign Wars National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2012, and Utah Police Chief of the Year in 2019. Under Chief Adams, Spanish Fork City was named the Safest City in Utah in 2021 and the 11th safest in the country.

Business of the Year: Dickerson Automotive Todd Dickerson began working in a local automotive repair shop in Spanish Fork at age 14. That early job led to a lifelong passion and career in the industry where he has emphasized giving back to his customers, his employees and the community. A few year ago, his business, Dickerson Automotive, started a program called Wheels With Heart. This program offers Dickerson Automotive services to those who need a hand up. Sometimes that means donating labor, parts or even a vehicle. “There’s nothing better than to be in a place where you’re able to give back to the community,” Dickerson said. In recognition of his helping hand, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has named Dickerson Automotive its 2021 Business of the Year. The Business of the Year is chosen through a vote by members of the chamber. During each monthly meeting of the chamber’s board of directors, board members discuss what businesses they feel have made outstanding contributions to the chamber and the community during the past month. The names of the nominated businesses are then sent out to all chamber members, who vote on which business they feel deserves to be honored. The winner becomes the chamber’s Business of the Month. Dickerson Automotive received this award in April of 2021. At the end of the year, chamber members are asked to vote for which of the 12 Businesses of the Month they feel should be recognized as Business of the Year. “I’m just honored. I really had no idea that that was even potentially something that we would be considered for,” Dickerson said. “There’s a lot of wonderful people in our community that are deserving of that, and so I’m very honored that we were chosen.” After finding his passion, Dickerson worked in automotive repair while he attended Spanish Fork High School and went to work for an independent repair

shop in Springville after graduating. He’d been there for about four years when a Cadillac came in with problems that had been to a Provo Cadillac dealership several times and confounded the service technician. Dickerson managed to fix the car, and the Provo Cadillac dealership ended up offering him a job. The dealership provided him with opportunities for advanced training in car repair, and he took advantage of it. Eventually, he and his father decided to start their own auto repair business, and they opened D&D Service in Springville in 1996. The business grew to the point where it needed a new facility. In 2000, Dickerson went out on his own and built the structure where his business currently operates at 34 W. 1900 North, Spanish Fork. Dickerson Automotive offers general automotive repair out of its facility, which includes nine service bays. “We pretty much do bumper to bumper; we want to be your one-stop shop” Dicker-

son said. The growth of his business has continued over the years. When the Spanish Fork facility first opened, Dickerson had four employees. The business now has 11 employees, including the members of his management team who have been with him from the beginning. “It’s been amazing. I’ve had great support from the community,” he said. One of his keys to success is his approach to management. He meets weekly with employees to discuss their goals and how he and the business can help them attain those goals. Dickerson has also been highly involved in the chamber, having joined it when he first opened his business in Spanish Fork more than two decades ago. “The chamber of commerce is where you can take a bunch of individual people who can only do so much on their own, but you combine their forces and they can do amazing things. Strength in numbers,” Dickerson said.

Spanish Fork Mayor’s Message I am humbled to continue serving Spanish Fork City in a new capacity as mayor. I’ve always loved Spanish Fork and am grateful to call it home. I was born and raised in Palmyra and Spanish Fork by my parents John and Lenna Mendenhall. I graduated from Spanish Fork High School in 1998 and attended Utah Valley University in 1999. I’ve also had the privilege of working in finance for 16 years in Spanish Fork, currently as a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones Investments. I love living and working in Spanish Fork. My biggest goal is to continue to build on the solid foundation that has been laid by those before me. There are a lot of things going right with Spanish Fork, and it’s a place that we are lucky to be able to call home. In 2011, my wife Amber and I were asked to serve as the chairs of the Fiesta Days celebration. It was an amazing experience that opened my eyes to all that goes into such a great

event and the many, many hands that make it possible. This opportunity, coupled with the privilege of serving as president of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce that year, sparked a burning desire within me to serve my community and give back. That desire is why I ran for city council eight years ago, and I have the same sentiment this go-around: to serve the place and people that I love. We have so much going on in Spanish Fork, including an amazing chamber of commerce and community of businesses that add so much to the quality of life we enjoy. I encourage each of you to shop and spend locally to support our local job base and economy. More than anything, I want each resident to be proud of their community, regardless of whether you’ve lived here 40 years or 40 days. 80th Annual Fiesta Days Rodeo The 80th Annual Fiesta Days Rodeo, presented by Mountain View Hospital, will be held July 20, 21, 22, 23 (Xtreme Bulls) and 25 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, 475 S. Fiesta Days Poker Run: Try your luck! Try your luck at drawing the best poker hand in town and be entered in a drawing for fabulous prizes as part of this year’s Fiesta Days Poker Run. This is the second year the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has offered the Poker Run, which will have residents visiting businesses throughout town and drawing cards from the businesses’ decks. The businesses will then stamp each participant’s Poker Stamp Card, where participants will keep track of what cards they have drawn. The participants who have collected the best poker hands at the end of the Run will be entered into a drawing for prizes from local businesses. This year’s Poker Run will be held July 21, 22, 23 & 25, the same days as the chamber’s Fiesta Days Sidewalk Sales on Main Street. End of an era: Chief Adams retires Police work means interacting with people during the most difficult times of their lives while also witnessing humanity’s finest moments. You’re also in a position to help — which was Steve Adams’ favorite part of his job. “When you’re in law enforcement, you’re able to see the people that you touch and that need the help, and, hopefully, you’re able to help them,” said Steve Adams, former director of the Spanish Fork City Public Safety Department. “You see people at their worst. They’ve had their worst things happen to them, or they’ve done the worst things that they can do, and that’s heart-wrenching. But there’s also times when you see the best in people.” A Spanish Fork native, Adams retired Jan. 14, 2022, after providing more than 30 years of service to Spanish Fork City. Matthew R. Johnson, formerly a lieutenant with the Spanish Fork Police Department, was sworn in as Adams’ replacement on Jan. 18.

WORKING HIS WAY UP THE LADDER Adams joined the Spanish Fork Police Department in 1988. He worked his way

up the ladder in the department, moving from patrol officer to investigations and then administration. Eventually, he was named director of public safety, a position that oversees Spanish Fork’s police, fire and EMS departments. In his youth, Adams had a Boy Scout leader named Pete Bell who was a Spanish Fork police officer. Adams looked up to Bell, and this piqued his interest in police work. However, his career path didn’t begin in law enforcement. After graduating from Spanish Fork High School and serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Adams earned an associate’s degree in computer science. Computers were the future, friends and family told him at the time. After doing computer programming for a couple of years, however, he knew it wasn’t for him, and he started applying for jobs at various police departments. One day in 1985, he rode his motorcycle past his friend Pete Bell’s house, and Bell waved him over and informed him the Mapleton Police Department had an opening — but it was closing that very day. Adams immediately rode up to the Mapleton station and applied. He was hired on, and Mapleton City put him through the police academy.

“In Mapleton, I learned a lot, and I grew with the city as it grew,” Adams said. Ultimately, however, it was his dream to work in his hometown, and after three years in Mapleton, he landed a job with the Spanish Fork Police Department.

INTRODUCING NEW PROGRAMS Adams introduced several new programs into the police department during his tenure as chief. These included Safe School Walks, where officers routinely

visit local schools and walk through the hallways giving high-fives to students. He also formally organized an Honor Guard within his department that provides Presentation of the Colors ceremonies at various events. About four years ago, the department started its Public Safety Night Out, an annual event that allows people to see and handle emergency response equipment. Those attending can crawl up on a fire engine or watch a police dog chase someone down. All of these programs provide opportunities for residents to have positive interactions with police officers and other emergency personnel, something Adams believes is very important for a community.

INNOVATION IN POLICE WORK Under Adams’ leadership, Spanish Fork was one of the first cities in Utah to

assign a Narcan dispenser to every police officer. Narcan is a nasal spray used to aid cases of suspected opioid overdose. This addition has saved many lives over the years, he said. He was also able to get police radios placed in all local public schools. Adams said he read an article about a school shooting in Colorado that indicated police heard about the active shooter on their radios and were able to respond very quickly. “I thought, why not have a radio in each of our schools in Spanish Fork?” Adams said. He approached the Central Utah Dispatch Center and then Nebo School District about the idea, receiving approval from both. In fact, the district like the idea so much that now all Nebo district schools have a police radio in their main office. The radios come with strict rules regarding when and how they are to be used as they broadcast on the same channel

where police officers communicate with dispatch. This instant contact, however, means officers will hear about an emergency as the school is relaying information to the dispatch center, enabling police to respond quicker than if the school had placed a direct call to 911.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Although now retired, Adams doesn’t plan to stop working. He’s continuing to operate a landscaping business he’s had as a side job while working at the police department, and he said residents may see him enter public service via the political realm in the near future. “I am very grateful for the community involvement, for their love and compassion and support,” Adams said. “It’s been a wonderful career, and we’re in good hands going forward.”

Solar energy - without rooftop solar panels Through a new community solar program, residents of Spanish Fork and Salem will be able to access green energy without having to install solar panels on their homes. Titled SharedSolar, the program allows residents to lease blocks of solar panels located in the new solar panel facility at 1500 E. Spanish Fork Parkway, Spanish Fork. Completed in August of 2021, the facility contains more than 11,900 solar panels. Each block leased will produce about 200 kilowatt hours of energy per month, and residential customers will pay a rate of 10.62 cents per kilowatt hour for the energy. They will then be credited for that energy on their monthly power bills. Customers can lease one or several blocks, but not enough to generate more power than they would use in their home. The remaining power used above the amount coming from their leased solar panels will be paid for at the normal power rate charged by their city. SharedSolar is one of several programs offered within RenewChoice, the Utah Municipal Power Agency’s overall program focusing on renewable energy and energy conservation. All the programs in RenewChoice are available to the six cities that are members of UMPA: Spanish Fork, Salem, Provo, Nephi, Manti and Levan. The Spanish Fork solar facility will be able to serve approximately 200 to 300 homes and between 30 to 50 businesses, depending on how many people sign up for the SharedSolar program. “This is the first of what we call our community solar projects,” said Kevin Garlick, vice president of generation at UMPA. “We’re studying several more sites as we believe the demand will grow. We’ll continue to add additional solar projects to help meet the growing needs of our customers.”

PROGRAM BENEFITS SharedSolar can be a great option for people who are unable to install solar panels on their roofs because they don’t own their homes; have insufficient solar resources or roof conditions to support a rooftop solar system due to shading, roof slopes or roof size; or for financial or other reasons. “That’s one of the benefits of the program — it doesn’t require any additional up front or additional investment for customers,” Garlick said. Customers are asked

to make a long-term commitment to the program, but the rate for the solar power is locked in and will not change. Those participating in the program will also benefit the environment through choosing clean, renewable electricity over traditional fossil-fueled energy sources. “Right now, SharedSolar is getting rolled out to residential customers, but probably by spring we’ll have it available for commercial customers, too,” Garlick said. The location of the Spanish Fork solar facility made sense as the area is a former

Construction to begin soon on new freeway interchange Residents of Spanish Fork could see construction beginning on a new freeway interchange on the north edge of the city as early as fall of 2022. Rapid population growth in southern Utah County prompted the Utah Department of Transportation to begin examining how to relieve traffic congestion in the area. This led to the decision to create a new interchange on Interstate 15 at the road known as 2700 North in Spanish Fork. The road is also known as 1600 South in Springville and marks the boundary between the two cities. By providing freeway drivers the choice to exit on this road, the new interchange will relieve traffic congestion on U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork and on Springville’s 400 South while providing an alternative route for traffic trying to access Spanish Fork’s Canyon Creek commercial area.

PROJECT PHASES The first phase of the project is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2022 and will consist of building new frontage roads and the new freeway ramps. The second phase of construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2023. This second phase will include moving utility lines (power, communication lines, water, storm drain, etc.), building a bridge over the Sharp railroad just east of 1750 West and completing ramps on the south part of the interchange. In addition, 2700 North/1600 South will be widened to five lanes from Spanish Fork’s Main Street to State Route 51. UDOT spent several months gathering initial technical data and public comments regarding creation of the new interchange. An environmental study of the project’s potential impact was also conducted.

The environmental study officially concluded in August 2021 with the publishing of the Environmental Assessment (EA) and FONSI (Finding of No Significant Impact) documents. The FONSI document certified the findings of the study and stated the project will not have any significant impacts or effects on the surrounding environment. The approval of the FONSI document authorized UDOT to move forward with hiring an engineering design firm (which occurred in the fall of 2021) to prepare all the roadway and bridge design plans,

coordinate with area utility companies and local governments, work with property owners to acquire property needed to build the project, and prepare advertising documents to hire a construction contractor.

Salem Mayor's Message As mayor of Salem, I appreciate this opportunity to introduce you to our beautiful community and share some of the highlights we enjoy as Salem residents. Salem City has a lot of projects currently underway. Salem City Fiber is an advanced fiber-to-the-home network that will revolutionize how we use the internet. Through deploying the most technologically advanced fiber network, we will bring you never-before-seen access to the internet. During the last year, we hooked our first customers up, and we will continue to provide it to all residents as we build the system. This process will take approximately two to three years to complete. The construction of The Stanley and Cally Cole Park is getting closer to completion. The park is set to open July 1, 2022. Cole Park will be the city’s first park designed specifically to provide a place where families can go to relax, have a picnic and let the kids play. We are preparing to work with the Central Utah Water Conservancy District

as it brings a new water pipeline through Salem on Salem Canal Road. In addition to the pipeline, the improvements to Canal Road will include installing a trail system that will connect to Spanish Fork and Payson. If you have never visited Salem City, you should plan a trip with your family to enjoy the beauty and recreational opportunities found at our beloved Salem Pond. Any day of the week, you will find families fishing, swimming, feeding the ducks, picnicking, kayaking, floating on small boats or simply resting in the shade of the trees and enjoying the breathtaking view of the mountains. Christmastime is a special treat at Salem Pond as residents and visitors come from all over to view the spectacular lighting display known as Pond Town Christmas. In the summer, as part of our Salem Days celebration, families flock to the pond to enjoy the fireworks display and watch them cascade over the water. Although Salem has primarily been a residential community, we have seen

Water Pipeline

SALEM CITY

Pipeline construction brings opportunity to Salem Construction of a large water pipeline through the heart of Salem will create road blocks and other inconveniences during the next two years, but the project is bringing great benefits as well. The Central Utah Water Conservancy District, the United States Department of the Interior and the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission are working together as Joint Lead Agencies to construct the Spanish Fork-Santaquin Pipeline in southern Utah County. This welded steel pipe — measuring 5 feet in diameter — is part of a series of tunnels, pipelines and aqueducts that deliver water from Strawberry Reservoir through the mountains and down Spanish Fork Canyon to the Utah Valley area. The new pipeline will stretch about 17 miles from the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon to Santaquin and provide secondary water to south county cities, including Salem and Spanish Fork. Secondary water is untreated water that, while not safe for human consumption, is ideal for residential landscaping and gardening. “This will provide for the cities’ outdoor watering needs into the future,” said Chris Hansen, CUPCA Program Manager with the CUWCD. “The beauty of a secondary system is then they don’t have to use culinary water to water lawns.”

THE PIPELINE PLAN The Spanish Fork-Santaquin Pipeline is being built in seven “reaches” or segments; four of those reaches have been completed and a fifth is underway through an area of Utah County northeast of Salem. This fifth reach will end at the intersection of Woodland Hills Drive and Salem Canal Road. At that point, the sixth reach — also known as Salem Reach 1 — will begin and be laid along Salem Canal Road all the way to Elk Ridge Drive. Hansen estimated the cost of Salem Reach 1 at between $40 and $50 million. Construction on Salem Reach 1 will be-

gin in approximately late spring to early summer. The pipeline will be laid in sections, meaning Salem Canal Road won’t be torn up all at once, but the two-year project will certainly cause headaches for those traveling across the city. However, there will be a plan in place for signage and detours to aid traffic flow. “Our work will be an inconvenience to the citizens of Salem,” Hansen said, “and we will do our best to keep them

apprised of detours and changes. … The value of this water to the future will far offset the inconvenience.”

BENEFITS TO RESIDENTS Greater access to water is an enormous benefit for Utah Valley residents, but Salem City officials also saw other opportunities in the canal project. Through a

partnership with the CUWCD, Salem City will be adding improvements to Salem Canal Road as part of the construction process, including a new walking/biking trail. “As part of the project, we wanted to do a lot of improvements,” said Bruce Ward, Salem City manager and engineer. “We took this as an opportunity to improve Salem Canal Road with regards to curb and gutter, storm drainage, widening the asphalt (on the road) and adding a 10-foot trail on the north side.” The north side of Salem Canal Road will be fully improved with curb and gutter (the south side will be completed sometime in the future as funds become available). The area’s storm drainage system will also be improved. The Salem Canal is being completely enclosed in a buried pipe as part of the project, and the city will be installing the new trail on top of that pipeline. The trail will be paved with asphalt and eventually connect into a trail system extending from the Spanish Fork River Trail to Payson. “It will be a fantastic improvement for the area,” Ward said. The total cost of Salem’s expenditures on improvements along the road is anticipated to be between $13 and $14 million, Ward said. That includes an approximately $3 million trails grant from the Mountainland Association of Governments that is helping to fund the trail construction. Working with the CUWCD has been “a tremendous partnership helping us both get more out of each dollar we spend,” Ward said. Salem City has worked diligently with the CUWCD to write specifications for the construction contractor that will minimize the impact of the project. “It will be disruptive to our citizens,” Ward said. “It will be messy, muddy, dusty and frustrating.” However, “The end product will be, I think, a huge benefit to the citizens of Salem,” Ward said.

Spanish Fork High construction underway Just west of Spanish Fork High School, a foundation is being created both for a new building and for Nebo School District students’ future educational opportunities. Rising from the ground is the new Spanish Fork High School, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2024. The current school, which was built in 1962, will then be torn down. “The new school will be adaptable and ready for technology-based learning while also having increased security measures and modern security systems,” said Lana Hiskey, Nebo School District communications and community relations administrator. The new SFHS is also being built to current seismic standards, reduc-

ing risk in the event of an earthquake. A new athletic field and stadium has already been completed just north of the existing high school, with student athletes utilizing it last fall. This facility — which will be used for football, soccer, track and other sports — features artificial turf and a state-of-the-art video scoreboard partially paid for through donations from the community. Completion of the new stadium allowed the old athletic stadium to be demolished, making room for construction of the new 369,707-square-foot main school building. Hiskey said construction is ahead of schedule. When the new school is completed, the old school will be torn down. In its place,

a new playing field and a 37,200-squarefoot sports field house containing three classrooms, a practice gym and a scaleddown artificial field with a running track will be constructed. Parking around the high school could be an issue as construction has eliminated some parking areas, and Hiskey said the district appreciates the public’s patience as the work goes forward. One of the most common questions asked as part of the project has been whether the large rock located at the front entrance of SFHS, a landmark at the school for decades, would be retained. Hiskey said the plan is to keep the rock and place it in front of the new school upon the school’s completion.

SHHS arts programs honored with national award Salem Hills High School doesn’t just have a great arts department; it has one of the best in the nation. In October of 2021, SHHS was honored as the 2021 National Federation of State High School Association’s Performing Arts School of Excellence. Salem Hills is the sixth school to receive the award, which has been presented to one high school in the United States each year since fall of 2016. Recipients of the NFHS Performing Arts School of Excellence are chosen for their exemplary commitment to the performing arts. They are honored in October to celebrate National High School Activities Month, which serves to remind students, parents, coaches, administrators and others in the community about the values and benefits of high school activity programs. NFHS Director of Performing Arts and Sports Dr. James Weaver presented the award to Ryan McGuire, current principal at SHHS, and Bart Peery, former principal of SHHS and current administrator at Nebo School District’s Advanced Learning Center, during a special ceremony at the school. “Salem Hills is a great school, and we are grateful for the support of this amazing community,” McGuire said. “Our students, teachers and staff are humbled by this amazing recognition of the hard work and effort of current and former students, parents and many others who work behind the scenes to support the fine arts programs at our school.” Nebo School District spokesperson Lana Hiskey said the culture of success within the Salem Hills performing arts department spans eight disciplines — band, choir, dance, ballroom dance, debate, drama, orchestra and visual.

OTHER RECOGNITIONS Several programs within the SHHS Fine Arts Department have received accolades over the past decade. The debate program has garnered a Class 5A state championship, two state runners-up finishes, 11 region championships and three straight

Sundance District Sweepstakes titles. Additionally, the debate program has produced three individual Lincoln-Douglas state champions and one Impromptu state champion, 23 academic All-Americans, one Sundance Student of the Year and numerous national debate competition qualifiers. The drama program has produced impressive results including a UHSAA State Theatre Competition Sweepstakes championship in 2018-19 and winning the Southern Utah University Shakespeare Competition Sweepstakes in 2018. It has also had success in the One-Act Play category at past UHSAA State Theatre Competitions and region competitions, placing second in the state and region in 2017-18, third in the state in 2020-21 and third in the region in 2018-19. SHHS choirs have received numerous Superior ratings at UHSAA Region Choral Festivals and Utah Music Educators Association Choral Festivals, and dozens of students have received similar honors at UHSAA State Solo & Ensemble Festivals. The choirs are also well-traveled, having performed at Chicago Symphony Hall and The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The SHHS orchestra has had an impressive 10-year run of Superior ratings at the UMEA State Orchestra Festival and the UHSAA State Solo & Ensemble Festival, where numerous individual students and small ensembles have also earned Superior

ratings. The orchestra was showcased at the Fall Workshop for the Utah Chapter of the American String Teachers Association in 2020 and 2021. The Salem Hills band has become a force at the region and state levels, winning a marching band state championship in 2013-14 and consistently earning Superior and Excellent ratings at the UMEA State Concert Band Festival and State Jazz Band Festival. The Salem Hills dance company has received Superior or Excellent ratings from the Utah Dance Education Organization or the Dance Company Festival Association in seven of the past eight years. These included a Superior rating and a Utah State Student Choreography Award from the UDEO in 2019 and three DCFA Superior ratings over a four-year stretch from 2013 to 2016. Salem Hills also features a ballroom dance team — the only ballroom program in Nebo School District. SHHS’s visual arts program has flourished over the years with several of its students chosen to take part in the AllState High School Art Show. Two students earned Jurors Awards at the show, which are given to only six students each year. Another student was nominated as a finalist for the Utah State Senate Art Competition, an honor reserved for the very best high school entries in the state.

This park is designed to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their abilities. It includes the Incredible Tree, which stands 24 feet tall with a 16-foot platform and slide. Those in wheelchairs can enjoy the first level of the treehouse and even peer inside the tree trunk from an elevated platform. There is also a zip line feature, a mountain with waterfalls and a ramp for wheelchairs, a splash pad, a wheelchair-only swing and a sensory garden with interactive toys and musical instruments.

Concrete ramps and jumps and other obstacles are here for skateboarders and scooter riders to enjoy. Skaters use this facility at their own risk and the use is safety equipment is highly recommended.

SALEM WETLAND PARK

70 E. Salem Park Circle, Salem On the northwest boundary of Salem, you will find a 38-acre pond and wetland area that encircle a 5-acre family use park. The park includes restrooms, a pavilion, a spacious playground and two miles of walking trails. The park also has two large open grass areas for family play and incredible wildlife observation opportunities.

Spanish Fork City has an extensive system of trails, including one that runs from east to west along the Spanish Fork River. This paved trail is several miles long and provides a beautiful and often shaded journey with the river, fully grown trees and farmland nearby.

Those looking to get cool in the middle of summer can head for North Park where they’ll find the city splash pad. Two pavilions requiring reservations are available along with two shade structures that don’t require reservations. There’s plenty of parking and two additional playgrounds — one for the youngsters ages 2 to 5 and the other for the older children ages 5 to 12.

Visitors can fish and boat on this 17.32-acre pond located in the middle of Salem. There’s ducks and other birds to watch as well as a walking path. Other amenities include parking, restrooms, picnic tables and two fishing piers. There are many handicapped-accessible fishing locations. Non-motorized craft are welcome on the pond from May through October. Motorized vehicles need a permit to be on the pond; contact Salem City for more information.

SPANISH OAKS RESERVOIR

2931 S. Spanish Oaks Drive, Spanish Fork One of Spanish Fork’s most unique parks, the Spanish Oaks Reservoir offers a large pond with a concrete bottom and sloping sides that is stocked for fishing. Swimming is also allowed, and swimmers can enjoy a sandy beach along one side of the pond. There are restrooms, parking, a pavilion with gas grills, picnic tables and a playground onsite. The best part of visiting the reservoir, however, could be the stunning view of Utah Valley the location provides.

600 S. 300 West, Salem A splash pad is being installed as part of the new Cole Park in Salem. The splash pad will include in-ground spraying features as well as structural amenities. A playground area is being constructed nearby.

This 16-acre facility has five ball fields and a football field. The complex also offers batting cages, a playground, a large pavilion and a 9-hole Frisbee golf course. The complex is located next to Foothills Elementary School.

This complex is home to six fields for softball and baseball, including the Spanish Fork High School Dons baseball field. There’s no playground or pavilion here — this place is all about playing ball — but there are 10 single picnic tables where you can enjoy snacks between games.

For sports and recreation opportunities, it’s hard to beat the Spanish Fork Sports Park. This large facility includes fields for softball, football, tennis, soccer and pickleball as well as two pavilions with gas grills available for rental. There’s a walking path stretching around the park and restrooms are available. Visitors also have more than 800 parking stalls available for use.

Located near Salem’s downtown area, this park has three ball fields, parking and a building housing restrooms and a snack shack. There is also a small playground, two batting cages and a pavilion.

HISTORY PARKS Icelandic Monument

ICELANDIC MONUMENT

800 E. Canyon Road, Spanish Fork Spanish Fork’s Icelandic Monument doesn’t offer much in the area of recreation, but it is a fascinating reminder of the city’s history. The small park features a lighthouse that serves as a monument to the 16 pioneers who traveled from Iceland to Spanish Fork where they created the first permanent settlement of Icelanders in the United States. The monument was placed on Aug. 1, 1938, by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Icelandic Association of Utah.

MEMORIAL SQUARE

210 N. Main, Spanish Fork Memorial Park provides another tribute to the history of Spanish Fork. This small park on the corner of 200 North and Main Street features plaques that have been placed in memory of deceased loved ones. There are also a few picnic tables and benches where passersby can stop for a moment and enjoy this little parcel of peace in the downtown area.

1438 S. 2050 East, Spanish Fork This park is a neighborhood park with a playground, a pavilion with four picnic tables and a basketball court. There is also a large, open grassy area for sporting activities.

CANYON VIEW PARK

3300 E. Powerhouse Road, Spanish Fork Canyon View Park offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains as well as a 1/2-acre pond with fishing available to youth ages 12 and younger. Three pavilions are available at the park with picnic table seating for 100 each (pavilion use is by pre-paid reservation only) and charcoal barbecues are available. Children can enjoy two playgrounds at the park; there are also grassy areas and a sand volleyball court available for sports.

CENTENNIAL PARK

572 S. 600 East, Spanish Fork This is a small park located on a strip of ground between Spanish Fork Junior High School and the Spanish Fork Cemetery. There is a playground and parking areas.

Legacy Farms Park is located within a newer neighborhood in northeastern Spanish Fork. It includes picnic tables and a playground, a restroom, basketball and fitness courts, a walking path and a large parking lot.

185 E. Melonie Lane, Salem This neighborhood park includes a very interactive playground with multiple play accessories. Updated about five years ago, the playground offers much more for children than just swings and a slide. There is also a pavilion at the park and mature shade trees.

Parkside Estates Park, another neighborhood park, offers a large, open grassy area, a concrete basketball court, a playground and a small pavilion with picnic tables.

This park has wide open grassy areas big enough for two soccer fields. There’s also an area for parking.

498 S. 820 East, Spanish Fork Located across the street from Centennial Park, East Park is mostly grassy play area with one youth baseball diamond, but it is also home to the Spanish Fork Skate Park, where skateboarders can try out their moves on concrete obstacles and jumps. It is also adjacent to the Spanish Fork Dog Park.
