COVER STORY

Midwest Real Estate

Mother/Son team take two awards for Midwest Real Estate

She’s quick to say she didn’t think her business would get this big, much less win Best of Real Estate Agencies for the second year in a row. But Delena Kofron, owner of Midwest Real Estate at 202 W. Karsch in Farmington, isn’t surprised at all by the winner in the Real Estate Agent category. After all, it’s her son, Eric. The duo recently looked back at how far they’ve come. “I got my license in 2005, and Eric got his in 2009 and worked it part-time, in the beginning,” she said. “I was after him to get his license for a few years, he just knew so many people,” Delena said. “I thought, there’s no way. I just couldn’t see it at the time,” Eric said, listing the jobs he’d had prior to joining his mom in the real estate business: construction, government gigs, beverage distribution. “I could never find my spot. I was always a hard worker, I could do just about anything, but I just never had a drive to do any of it.” Real estate changed everything. “I saw the potential in real estate, I had my license and was closing some deals, working part-time,” he said, adding that once he was in full-time, he got hooked. “This is a job I get gratification from, it’s not thankless work,” he said. “When you do an awesome job for somebody, especially a first-time buyer, and you get to closing, they’re so excited, their hands are shaking. You get to hand them their keys and a little

Midwest Real Estate wins the Best Real Estate category for a second year in a row. closing gift, you get to take that picture with them. They’re stoked, and it’s hard not to get that way, too.” His mom had a number of gigs herself before finding her shine in real estate: Back in the day, Delena worked for MFA before it shut down. She attended MAC for her associate degree, took an internship to perform office work for the long-ago-closed string of T-Rex gas stations, and she owned a women’s fitness center.

Around 2005, she decided to pursue real estate, got her license, and worked for Deb Goodson Realty for almost a decade. Six years ago, she decided to strike out on her own, get her broker’s license and start Midwest Real Estate, named after the business of some very dear friends of hers, the late Norman Carron and his wife, Jean. The “MIDWEST” letters on her office wall are from the Midwest Crane

Service building, which Norm co-owned in addition to Carron Crane Service. “Jean told me, ‘Norm had so much faith in you, he said if anyone could be successful, it’s you,’” Delena said. “They were such good people and they’ve helped me tremendously. I just really appreciate his faith in me. Between the Carrons and God, here we are.” Delena said when she started out, she had no intention of growing the business

as big as it’s become. “I had a little bitty office, it was me, Eric and Pam Oder at the time, Michael O’Neal, just a real small group,” Delena said. “I’ll always say it, God had different plans for us. This location fell into our lap, which you can’t beat, right here on Karsch. There’s 23 of us now. I didn’t even dream it.” Delena said another rising star at Midwest Real Estate is Mike Shanks, their compliance coordinator. “He’s been in this for two and a half years and he got 2018 Rookie of the Year with the Mineral Area Board of Realtors,” she said. “He will go anywhere in the state of Missouri, literally, he’s been everywhere in the state, and he’s either No. 2 or 3 in sales. I haven’t seen a young person with that much work ethic, and kind. He’ll step in and help other realtors if Eric or I am not here.” “I trained him to follow in my footsteps,” Eric joked. “Everyone knows customer service is what we mean to do here, because we train them to know it,” Delena said. “We show them, this is how you get repeat business. So far, so good.” Eric said there’s an emphasis on teamwork and goodwill. “We don’t have meetings once a week where we go over everyone’s sales for the week or month. Everyone’s at their own speed, we don’t pit agents against each other. It’s the total opposite,” he said. “Just the other day, I gave a client to one of our new agents, just to get him out there to do something with it. Here’s a lead, take it and run with it. I want everyone to be as successful together, in this office, as we are individually. It makes for a better working environment.” Eric said he thinks the company’s success can also be attributed to the hands-off way

they handle their clients, and their hands-on way of handling contracts, deals and negotiations. “We’re not house salespeople. We like working with people, negotiating the deals, we like getting to closings, but we’re not out trying to sell anybody a house,” he said. “We’re just making that connection and getting them the best possible deal we can, and make it as smooth as possible.” “The whole goal is not just to get that contract written and get a paycheck. The paycheck comes when you do a very good job for your client, whether it’s helping people sell or buy.” Delena said they want to be like a knowledgeable friend coming along on house tours, a friend that’s going to provide insights, but also give honest concerns if they present themselves. “A lot of companies just push sales numbers. It’s real easy to get someone to write contracts they really don’t like if you want them to, but we don’t roll that way, no one here in this office does,” Delena said. “When you find the right house, commercial building or property, we’ll help you get the best deal and do everything we can to make sure it goes smooth … Yeah. Never have tried to sell anyone a home.” “Couples. I swear to you, I look at them just like my children. I had one little guy, he was so cute. His girlfriend couldn’t make it to the one showing, but I was like, ‘hey, this is a good deal, if you’re going to go, we gotta go now, because this one definitely won’t last,’ and he called his girlfriend to say, ‘Delena says we have to buy this one now because it’s a good deal and it won’t last.’” Eric said, “It’s important to build that trust. We have a family vibe and we look out for

each other.” Delena responded, “Oh, I definitely have their back. It’s customer service with us, we don’t care whether you’re buying a $75,000 house or a $500,000 house, you get

treated the same. We work just as hard for you. That’s where I pride myself. “We just work very hard to do a good job and treat people right. I don’t know what else there is to say.”

First State Community Bank

MULTIPLE CATEGORY WINNER

FSCB wins three category awards In this year’s Best of the Parkland, First State Community Bank was awarded first place in three categories: Best Bank Services, Best Employer/ Workplace, and Best Philanthropic Business. Additionally, First State Financial Management was chosen as a finalist in Financial Planning Service. The founders of the bank were part of Farmington’s tightknit community. During a time of economic struggle, businessman B.H. Jennings saw a need for locally-owned banking services in the region. Gathering investors, he formed First State Bank in 1954, now known as First State Community Bank. Still headquartered in its “hometown” of Farmington, FSCB has grown to include more than 50 locations throughout southeast, eastern and central Missouri and hires between 250-300 employees in

St. Francois County alone. “We are very communityoriented — that’s why the word community is in our name, and it’s something that we live by,” said FSCB President/CEO Matt Sebastian. “We encourage community involvement and community projects to enhance the lives of our residents, whether it may be in the form of making commercial loans for new businesspeople or contributing to a school project or community event. We encourage involvement from our employees’ standpoint.” According to Sebastian, having management and board members who are local to each bank is essential to FSCB’s spirit of encouraging a strong connection with every community in which they have a presence. “One of the things we do in these markets is have a

local board of directors,” he said. “There’s a lot of banks that don’t do that anymore. Fredericktown has its own board of directors made up of businesspeople from Fredericktown; Ironton’s got their own. “We have presidents at each one of our communities that we encourage to get involved. The reason we do that is twofold. Number one, it helps us to keep an eye on that community and what needs to be done. Two, they help us with good business decisions and feedback. A huge key to our success is that we’ve emulated this in every market that we’ve been in.” This is not the first time FSCB has been recognized in the Best of the Parkland. Asked how it felt to know that people in the Parkland think so highly of the bank, Sebastian said,

“We’re very proud of that fact. We give a lot in our communities. We do things that hopefully enhance the quality of life in our communities. We’ve been doing that for years. “We have what’s called an Impact Project that we do at each one of our branches every year. We pick some sort of charitable event — something that we can do for Habitat for Humanity, donating money to the food banks or building a playground over at My Sister’s Closet, different things like that. “This past year, we’ve doubled the amount we’ve contributed to the Impact Project because of the pandemic. We felt like we needed to invest more in our communities because everybody was struggling a little more than usual with what was going on. We’re more than just a bank.”

First State Community Bank is proud to be a part of the communities in which it serves. Pictured at the Farmington location from left are Matt Stites, loan officer; Lauren Brockmiller, loan coordinator; Skyler Carter, loan coordinator; Taylor Miller, mortgage loan officer; Greg Sebastian, loan officer; Darla Hayes, assistant vice president; Sarah Amsden, loan coordinator; Isabella Wisdom, deposit services representative; Ryan Montgomery, teller; Lisa LaPlante, receptionist; Matt Sebastian, president/CEO; Vickie Hatfield, safe deposit box representative; Gabby Collins, branch manager; Dan Combs, chief investment officer; Maggie Smith, financial crimes fraud specialist; and Dana Corcoran, Club & Community coordinator.

Lix Frozen Custard

BEST ICE CREAM/CUSTARD

Lix offers variety, quality Lix Frozen Custard has been voted Best Ice Cream/Custard in the Parkland. Its two locations in Desloge and Farmington offer concretes, shakes, malts, sundaes, Lix on a Stick, ice cream sandwiches, chocolatedipped bananas and delicious custard pies. Owner Roberta Gettemeier hopes readers voted for Lix because of the quality of product and the service customers receive. “I consistently get positive reviews on both, which I’m very proud of,” Gettemeier said. “After being in the area for 17 years, I like to think we are an established member of the Parkland community. I have employees who worked for me back in the day, who

now bring their kids in for custard.” She believes the quality of their custard and large selection of toppings is what sets Lix Frozen Custard apart from the competition. “We don’t skimp on either one,” Gettemeier said. “Comparing real frozen custard to soft serve or what you buy in a carton at the grocery store, is like comparing filet mignon to a hamburger. Both those are beef but completely different in quality.” The company-specific recipe for their vanilla frozen custard has a rich vanilla flavor and is all natural. As for the top selling item, it is one that is not even on the standard menu, the Gooey Butter Cake concrete. “We came across it in

Alyssa Bramhall serves up a Lix on a Stick. 2019 and it’s been a crazy hit ever since,” Gettemeier said. “Although, blackberry cobbler

season is here so it’s going to give the butter cake a run for the best-selling.”

BEST BAR-B-QUE

Sugarfire Smoke House

Sugarfire offers a creative, fresh menu The Meat Daddy. Big Muddy. Turkey Bacon Rancher. These are only a few of the many reasons why Farmington’s Sugarfire Smoke House recently earned the Best of the Parkland award for Best Barbecue. Brothers Charles and Patrick Johnson opened the “chef-inspired and chef-driven” restaurant in January 2018. Charles is acting chef while Patrick is manager of catering and equipment. Leanna Johnson, their mother, is the dessert baker who helps oversee the restaurant. There are now 15 locations of the growing brand of Sugarfire restaurants in Missouri and other states. “We offer the same core menu items,” said Leanna, “but chefs are given leeway to be creative with daily specials.” Creating daily specials is a collaborative effort. Employees come up with an idea and everyone gives feedback. Once the dish is perfected, it’s added to the menu for that day. Manager Colten Spencer often comes up with creative dishes for daily specials. “We all taste it,” said Leanna. “Sometimes it’s a planned

item or it might be created on a whim.” Pitmaster Bobby Bourbon begins work early in the morning to prepare Sugarfire’s top-selling turkey and brisket, along with ribs and pulled pork. The brisket and pork are smoked for 16 hours before they’re ready to serve. The meats are cooked in Ole Hickory commercial smokers manufactured in Cape Girardeau. The smoked meats are certainly the showcase for any meal from Sugarfire. From the Meat Daddy – four-bone rib, brisket, pulled pork, turkey and specially made jalapeno cheddar sausage from Ste. Genevieve’s Oberle Meats – to combo plates to smoked salmon to salads, there are many items from which customers can choose for dine-in or carryout. Sides can be purchased in single servings or quart or gallon sizes. Many of Sugarfire’s sauces are made in-house including the Texas hot, Carolina mustard and their signature white sauce, along with their apple cider vinaigrette, ranch and dressings for their coleslaw and potato salad. They also

A few unique products are sourced from other familyowned businesses including Excel bottled and fountain drinks, freshly-baked breads from Fazio’s Bakery and Ronnie’s Ice Cream from St. Louis, and LaRue artesian bottled water. “It’s very labor-intensive because we make everything fresh,” said Leanna. “Our goal is to serve high-quality products with no preservatives.” When customers arrive at Sugarfire, they’re greeted by unique artwork by Brandon Warren and Samson LaMonds, along with colorful, comfy seating. The handlettered menu boards offer an abundance of items to choose, from meats to side dishes, specialty sandwiches, salads, from-scratch desserts,

and other sweet treats including adult shakes. Leanna said there are several reasons she feels customers continue to choose Sugarfire for the Best Barbecue award. “We cook fresh food, and we don’t even have a microwave,” she said, “but primarily, it’s because we take pride in providing the best and freshest products possible and have excellent customer service.” Sugarfire Smoke House offers 10% discounts to military, EMS and firefighters. BEST DANCE STUDIO

O’Dell’s Dance Center

‘Where every student is a star’ Six decades. That’s how long O’Dell’s Dance Center has been in business. Jerry O’Dell opened the studio in 1959 in Flat River because there were no studios in town and she wanted her daughter Geri to learn dance. The studio moved to Desloge in 1964. Geri took over the studio when she was 19. The studio was then sold to Dee Wampler Courtois. Mandi Herzog started taking lessons when she was 5. In 1987, Bev Holst bought the studio. Herzog became a teaching assistant at 16 under her guidance and taught full-time at 19. In 2011, Holst sold the studio to Herzog, who opened O’Dell’s with 75 students and the tagline “where every student is a star.” Ten years later, Herzog – fifth

owner of the studio – has expanded to a new location in Desloge with seven teachers and eight student assistants. More than 175 students are enrolled in various classes including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling and musical theater. Students learn skills and perform in an annual recital while some participate in competitive dance. Herzog is assisted by Mackenzie Risenhoover, her “right hand” who has worked with her since Herzog first purchased the studio. “I’m truly blessed to live this life and pass my love of dance on to my students in the community where I grew up and am the proud owner of my childhood studio,” she said. “It’s

Also pictured are Mackenzie Risenhoover, Herzog’s assistant, and Bev Holst (right), who sold the business to Herzog and now teaches part-time at the studio. truly a dream come true.” Herzog and husband Eric – her “rock” – have three children, Luci, 11, Bucklei, 6, and Harris, 2.

According to Auto Plaza, from new and used sales to parts and service, there are numerous reasons why drivers choose the dealership’s services and it is proud to serve the area. “Our teams of sales advisors, service technicians and financing experts are training with one focus in mind, addressing each of your needs with the utmost respect, care and attention to detail,” the Auto Plaza website reads.

The Auto Plaza sales team is experienced and well-known in the area. The sales advisers are focused on customer satisfaction and attention to detail. Auto Plaza started in 2012 when a dealership in De Soto was bought out by the group. The company skyrocketed in 2016 when it acquired Crown Motors which included the Farmington location as well as a store in Marble Hill and Ste. Genevieve.

The Auto Plaza service and repair department can help with routine maintenance or any issues your vehicle may be having.

The Farmington dealership sells new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram as well as quality pre-owned vehicles. The location also services the brands it sells, as well as just about any other make of vehicle. Auto Plaza also sells parts for those who prefer to perform their own work. “I think voters voted for us because they have come to know that we have been here for a long time,” General Sales Manager John Robinson said. “Many employees go back years at this location and enjoy dealing with local, familiar people that they know will treat them fairly and stand behind what they sell.” Robinson said the fact that Auto Plaza is easy to deal with, offers upfront no haggle prices and gives a 300,000mile powertrain warranty on new vehicles and most preowned vehicles sets it apart from the competition. Auto Plaza claims to have the best lease deals and financing options in the Farm-

ington area and if you are in the market for a used car the team would be happy to fill you in on each of the reliable options in its inventory. The service and repair department is also there to help with routine maintenance or to solve any issues your vehicle may be having. At Auto Plaza, they want to ensure a positive ownership experience and its full staff, onsite auto service and repair team are ready to help. “We offer drop off and pick up service for the shop and loaner vehicles for many instances as well,” Robinson said. “We just try to be laid back and make purchasing a vehicle fun and enjoyable.” Robinson said in March, the dealership had a record month selling 119 pre-owned vehicles retail, 50 new vehicles and sold more than 40 used vehicles wholesale. Auto Plaza Farmington located at 970 Woodlawn Dr. is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BEST PIZZA

Pizza 101 South

Engineering the perfect pizza (and mighty good salad) Having degrees in industrial, mechanical and manufacturing engineering might not be the norm for most restaurant owners, but for Dustin Gerstenschlager, owner of Pizza 101 South on 101 S. Division St. in Bonne Terre, it helped build a second-time winner of Best Pizza. In his other occupation, Gerstenschlager helps launch new, manufactured products: coming up with the design for the manufacturing lines, determining how much work each person does on the line, finding the most cost-effective, efficient way to produce goods. He’s traveled around the world and tried different cuisines in every country he’s visited. So when he decided to move a restaurant into the former Politte’s Key Club Tavern building – which had seen a few different businesses from the time it closed almost 20 years ago — he took three years while renovating to apply his engineering skills in his own kitchen, honing his recipes.

“There are key elements involved in manufacturing anything. With the recipes, I probably approached it more like the manufacturing industry than the restaurant industry,” he said. “I did different recipes, multiple tastings, we went through a number of different methods, got different opinions. I put it all in an Excel spreadsheet and got the data that way. I also put together a matrix of every pizza place in two counties, of everything they make, and prices, and prices per square inch, and that’s how I came up with my prices.” And it’s good data. You can taste it. Gerstenschlager recently shared, for starters, an order of generously-cheesed, World Famous Garlic Cheese bread with Pizza 101’s ultra-rich, thick, meaty red sauce on the side. “Many people order that and a salad for lunch, they love it,” he said. Then came the popular Greek salad, which Gerstenschlager is convinced helped Pizza 101 also become a fi-

It came with the crowdpleaser: the Total Package. This $13 specialty pizza – add $2 for a cauliflower crust – features the incredible red pizza sauce, house-blend cheese, pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, green pepper, red onion, mushroom, black olives and bacon on a thin crust that uses a dough recipe Gerstenschlager created. The dough is a two-day process of letting it rise, slowing the rise, and rolling it into balls that are pressed. “That’s what sets us apart, too, we don’t just come up with our own recipes, we cook

it in a wood-fired, 650-degree oven that takes 90 seconds to cook your pizza,” he said. Other specialty pizzas include Hot Mama, Herbivore, Carnivore, Fly Me to the Moon and the Aloha. Gerstenschlager said he had his arm twisted to include the ham and pineapple pizza, although he admits the wood-fired oven caramelizes the pineapple very nicely. The full menu of pizzas, toppings, pastas, appetizers and Gerstenschlager’s respectable 30-beer list can be found at www.pizza101south.com or on their Facebook page. “I’m also blessed to have an incredible staff working here,” he said. “Paige Prasuhn is my general manager, she’s always moving, Aaron Tripp and Cody Helm my shift managers — I couldn’t do it without them.”

KC Photography

BEST PHOTOGRAPHER

For the love of photography One thing that makes Casey Hartley smile is when someone sees a photograph of hers and instantly realizes it’s her work. Hartley started KC Photography 11 years ago out of necessity when a friend needed someone to shoot her wedding. Then other friends asked her to do the same for them. “My late mother fancied herself a photographer so I decided to dive more into it,” said Hartley. “Turns out God was simply handing me a big gift!” Hartley specializes in weddings, seniors and headshots. Most recently, she earned Best Photographer in the Best of the Parkland awards, a title she has won multiple years. “Hands down, I’ve been

blessed by getting hired by the most wonderfully beautiful and gracious clients,” she said. As a photographer, Hartley said it’s important to be a good listener. She expects more from herself than what her clients expect. She also surrounds herself with other people who are great and make a difference. Although it’s difficult for her to choose a favorite event which she’s photographed, Hartley thoroughly enjoyed photographing a local couple last year at Yosemite. “Being gifted with a successful business has taken me all over and I’m loving it,” she said. Hartley has a second shooter, Sarah, who assists

BEST PRE-OWNED AUTO DEALERSHIP

Cox Motors

New business sees success Cox Motors may be new to Park Hills, but it hasn’t taken the community long to embrace the pre-owned car dealership. March was the best month yet for the dealership, which opened last June, and on top of that, they have been named the Parkland’s Best PreOwned Auto Dealership. “As you see, after the last month, we are sold out,” Owner Jason Cox said of his depleted inventory. He said most of his business is from referrals. “Probably 70% of our business is from either repeat customers or friends and family of our customers because they’re happy with the experience,” he said. “They’re happy with the quality vehicle that they’re getting and the overall experience. Here it’s just really different, unique, and positive.” Cox said their personable approach sets them apart from other dealerships. “There’s no smoke and mirrors,” he added. “We’re not salesmen by any means. We’re just normal every-day, local people who are selling other normal every-day, local people cars. “We don’t have anything to hide. We’ve worked very hard to have the nicest cars possible. We probably spend more time and more money on reconditioning than any other dealership around and keep a very high caliber vehicle.” The dealership was originally located in Ironton, where Cox opened it in 2017. Once he and his wife moved to the Park Hills area, he decided to move the business, too, and change things a bit. “We’re keeping different cars than what we had over

Owner Jason Cox and Manager Casey Blumenstock offer financing options at Cox Motors in Park Hills. there,” he explained. “We have a lot of financing opportunities where that was pretty much a cash-only lot. We only kept five cars in inventory over there versus now we try to keep around 15 to 20 on the lot.” Cox is not new to the car business. Before opening his own lot in 2017, he worked at a few dealerships in the area and then started working at a large franchise dealership in St. Louis. But the commute and the long hours started to be too much. So he decided to start his own. “I learned the business inside (and) out pretty well working in the St. Louis market and knew that I could do it on my own,” he said. His experience running a finance department at one of the dealerships has allowed him to bring on several of the banks to help with financing

at his Park Hills business. They offer a credit reestablishment program and a first-time buyers program. Cox said they mainly offer newer cars with decent mileage that are $10,000 and under. But he does keep a few “exotic” vehicles in stock, such as sports cars, classic cars, and motorcycles. “We literally sell as many as what we have on our lot every month,” he added. “We’re turning our inventory very fast. Typically a car’s in inventory here about two weeks. That’s on the long end.” He said the pandemic has made it tough to find cars with many dealerships holding onto used cars longer because they don’t have as many new cars coming in. COVID has slowed down production for many car manufacturers. Cox said they also buy cars from customers.

He already has plans to expand. He has bought a piece of land across from the dealership to build a service shop that he hopes to open this summer. “It will be open to the public, as well,” he said. “It’s not going to be just for our dealership cars. We’re going to specialize in oil changes and general maintenance.” Cox is also a police officer in north St. Louis County, so he said the business is very pro law enforcement. Casey Blumenstock, manager of the dealership and the only other employee, is married to a police officer. Cox Motors, located at 3326 Commonwealth Drive, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. But Cox said he is also open to appointments outside of those hours.

Plummer’s Ace Hardware

BEST HARDWARE STORE

Plummer’s offers quality service

This year’s Best Hardware Store in the Parkland goes to Plummer’s Ace Hardware, 101 E. Liberty St. in Farmington. The store has served generations of local residents with its wide selection of basic home maintenance needs, great customer service and ease of shopping. Owner Scott Plummer took over running the business from his parents Jim and Delores Plummer in 1987. Of all the changes he’s made over the years, Scott believes one of his best decisions was to become an Ace Hardware store. “We became a part of Ace Hardware in 2016,” he said. “Being an Ace Hardware store, we’re locally owned and operated, but we’re trusted

nationally. We have the best of both worlds.” While the pandemic has caused a financial strain for many businesses, Plummer’s has seen an increase in customers over the past year. “Home improvement stores have been the winners,” he said. “More and more people were staying at home and wanted to take care of their house and had more time to do it. We have a lot of new customers, which is hard to believe. Scott believes that having quality employees is the key to a successful business. He has employees in all stages of life — from high school and college students to retirees. “The bottom line is, it’s about the people,” he said.

Plummer’s Ace Hardware in Farmington continues to faithfully serve the Parkland after many years in business. Pictured are, from left, Tony Brinkley, Darin Hooss, Owner Scott Plummer, Carson Hull, Manager Charlene Grohmann, Michael Wright; Jaxson Romine; Manager Dylan Plummer and Office Manager Sarah McRoy. to treat our employees and our customers like we would like to be treated.”

Customer service is No. 1 at Patsy’s Patsy’s Furniture, located at 1115 N. St. Joe Dr. in Park Hills, was voted Best Furniture Store/Best Mattress Store in the Parkland for 2021. Patsy’s has been in business for 18 years, and owners Jamie and Chris Wade have operated the store for the past five years. “When we bought this store five years ago, in 2016, we lowered the prices by 20% because we wanted everything to be affordable for everyone,” Chris explained. “Jamie is retired military, and we live off of his income; we don’t take a paycheck, and we give back to the community.” The Wades said they believed Patsy’s Furniture belonged to God and is in business to serve his purpose in the community. From providing discounts to families in need after a fire or other disaster to holding fundraisers, food drives, and tent revivals at the location, the Wades said they are always trying to do the Lord’s work. This is the first year that the furniture store has won a Best of the Parkland contest. The Wade’s said they believe the customer service offered

Patsy’s Furniture Owners Jamie and Chris Wade use the popular retail store to help the community any way they can. The couple’s faith in God and desire to help those in need led them to purchase the business in 2016. at Patsy’s is what sets their store apart from others. “Customer service is where we try to stand out,” Jamie said. “We have a friendly staff and try to treat everyone like family. We aren’t perfect at it, but we do try. We try to have people smile when they come in and keep the smile all the

way through our delivery at their homes. “One of the things we try to do is leave customers alone to look around without pressure sales pitches,” he explained. “We try to employ friendly staff and treat them like family. “There’s always room for improvement, and we take input very seriously from our customer base,” he noted. “But, the thing that really sets us apart is that we are a local veteran-owned company that is not ashamed to say that Jesus is Lord and we serve him openly. If people in our community need prayer, we are proud to stand with them and ask God on their behalf.” The couple said there are many top-selling furniture pieces and sets within the store’s approximately 19,000 square-foot showroom.

“It’s hard to pick just one set of furniture,” said Chris. “The Joanna Table by Steve Silver, the SoCozi massage living room sets from Southern Motion, and Ashley have many sets that we cannot keep on the floor if we tried.” The Wades said they felt blessed that Patsy’s Furniture was the community’s selection for Best Furniture/Mattress Store this year. “We would like to thank everyone who voted for us in this year’s contest,” said Jamie. “It means a lot to us to be given this recognition. We are looking forward to what the next year will bring. God bless everyone.” Patsy’s Furniture is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, contact the store at 573-518-1900 or visit www.patsysfurniture.com.

Chosen this year’s Best Hospice Care in the Parkland is Serenity HospiceCare, located at 5272 Flat River Road in Park Hills. Serenity is an independent, not-for-profit, faith-based organization overseen by a local board. It is the area’s oldest hospice, having started providing quality end-of-life care 32 years ago when hospice wasn’t as common and widely accepted as it is today. “We’re kind of the hometown hospice,” said Executive Director Gayla Sisk. “We served our first patient in 1989 as an all-volunteer group. It was a group of citizens who got together and said, ‘We really want hospice in this area so that people can have the right to die at home.’ “It was grassroots, and I’m proud that we started in that fashion. One of the things I think sets us apart is that we’re not owned by a big corporation. We’re governed by a board of directors who are neighbors. They live in the community where we serve.” Through grants, fundraisers, and donations, services are provided to anyone in need regardless of their ability to pay. Serenity patients receive visits from a nurse twice a week on average, and a Certified Nurse Aid visits the home three times weekly. The hospice is on call 24 hours, seven days a week. Once the nurse feels that the end of life is near, however, patients receive around-the-clock care. In addition to hospice services, Serenity provides comfort care, house calls, volunteers, the We Honor Veterans program, Carter’s Clubhouse, and an outreach program.

Old Village Mercantile

MULTIPLE CATEGORY WINNER

Serving smiles every day

Owner Nina Gilliam likes to say that the Old Village Mercantile is in the business of making smiles. She said a new employee realized this when he handed an ice cream cone to a little girl. “She just started beaming,” Gilliam continued. “That’s the way it is. And that’s why we say we make smiles here because you hand them ice cream, or checking out, and there’s a little hand that brings up the candy. Then you hand the candy bag back down and there’s this smile. It fills the face. That’s the best part about working here.” Caledonia’s old fashioned general store that serves up 600 varieties of candy, homemade ice cream, and antiques was once again named the Best Specialty Store (Other Regions) and Best Antique Store in this year’s Best of the Parkland contest.

After 20 years, Gilliam loves that she is starting to see generations of smiles in her store, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “We’ve had parents that have brought their kids in,” she explained. “The kids have grown up, had their own kids, now they’re bringing kids. So we’re starting to see generations of people come into the candy store. It’s really neat.” Gilliam’s even seeing it with her employees. Riley Ives knew when she turned 16 she wanted to work in the store. Coming into the store, browsing the antiques and getting an iced vanilla coffee was the highlight of her weekends growing up. Now Ives has been serving up smiles and scoops of ice cream for the next generation for the past two years.

Old Village Mercantile Owner Nina Gilliam has started to see generations of families shopping, and even working, at her store. Riley Ives grew up coming into the store and now works for Gilliam. The homemade ice cream, made by retired teacher Randy Huff, is a big draw. He often uses the homemade baked goods and candy from the store in his unique flavors. Gilliam’s husband, who specialized in antique signs, is the antiques curator at the store.

The antiques fill the second level and now they’ve expanded the collection into the building next door. They bought the building, which used to be a restaurant, for the kitchen to make the ice cream and baked goods. The front is now filled with more antiques to browse.

Arcadia Valley Soap Company

BEST SPECIALTY SHOP IN ARCADIA VALLEY

Celebrating 20 years of making soap

The Arcadia Valley Soap Company has a lot to celebrate this year as it is owner Debra Hendron’s 20th anniversary as a soap maker and the business was chosen as the Best of the Parkland Specialty Shop in Arcadia Valley for the fifth year in a row. Hendron said she feels the readers voted for them because of the overall experience of coming into the shop and taking home a piece of the Valley. “The shop is always changing, so there is always something new,” Hendron said. “We work really hard to make shopping with us special for everyone that walks through the door. There have been so many amazing customers from all over the Parkland area that have come to visit us, told their friends about us and

shared our products. I am very grateful for all who voted.” Arcadia Valley Soap Company uses mostly local suppliers for its gift baskets and everything is made at the store. “We handcraft our products from our little soap shop right on Main Street in Ironton,” Hendron said. “Shanda (Martin) makes all of our hand-poured wax melts and manages the store. I create the soaps and other body care products and handle the online side of things.” Along with the three brands: Arcadia Valley Soap, Botanical Earth and MoSoap, the duo also design custom wedding and shower favors and offer private labeling and wholesale options. “We enjoy whipping up a lastminute gift to help someone out,” Hendron said. “It’s not just

Shanda Martin and Debra Hendron create a gift basket with many of their handcrafted items, at Arcadia Valley Soap Company. about making the best products we can and adding the little touches like pretty tissue paper, but making people feel welcome, plus loving what we do is what

makes Arcadia Valley Soap Co. special.” Arcadia Valley Soap Company is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thanks for voting for us! Quality | Compassion | Dedication What you value thrives here. For over 50 years, Farmington Presbyterian Manor has been proud to be a part of the Parkland and to support seniors in this community. Precision + patience = perfection. Busenbark Flooring and Granite takes these three words very seriously. Their 36,000-squarefoot showroom is proof they have earned the title of experts in the flooring industry. The business was first opened by Leslie Busenbark in 1939. The Busenbark familyowned business has now been in operation for 82 years. Son Gary operated the business before retiring. Currently brothers Todd, Chad, Les and Brock manage the family business. The Shed Vapes, located at 6326 Hillsboro Rd. in Bonne Terre, was chosen Best CBD/ Vape Shop in the Parkland for 2021. The Shed Vapes is a wholesale vapor shop that began operation in owner Stan Janis’ kitchen before moving to a small building on his property. Janis and the store’s General Manager Derek Bainbridge started selling vapor products to help people quit smoking. Since its inception more than three years ago, he said the shop has helped more than 5,000 people kick their smoking habits. Janis said the wholesale vape shop sells its many products for little to no profit, allowing people an inexpensive option to help them quit smoking. He said any profit that the store does see goes back into the store or is used to help area law enforcement agencies with various fundraising efforts. The shop carries a multitude of different vaping devices and more than 200 brands of premium nicotine juices. While the

vapor shop is smaller than most area shops, Janis said they carry more products and variety than others. “We’re not trying to put anybody’s shop out of business,” Janis explained. “If we don’t have what they need, we send them to other shops in the area.” Janis said the shop’s goal is not to pull traffic in but rather to help the people that may not have the money to spend on more expensive retail tobacco alternatives. “Thank you for the votes and for the confidence and support of The Shed Vapes,” said Janis. “It means a lot to us and is very much appreciated. It also helps a lot of people. We are here for the community, and we hope that we help them in their journey with a safer alternative to tobacco products.” The Shed Vapes is open Monday-Friday from noon to 8 p.m. The shop is open Saturday and Sunday with varying store hours. Contact The Shed Vapes at 314471-5453 or visit their Facebook Page: “The Shed Vapes.”

Owner Stan Janis and General Manager Derek Bainbridge offer a large selection of wholesale vaping products at The Shed Vapes, which officially opened in 2018 and now serves hundreds of customers per week.
