he electorate in Southern Ijaw councils may be going to the poll today ostensibly to elect a governor for Bayelsa State, but unknown to them, politicians have their own agenda. The above scenario emerged yesterday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC)led Federal government to resist the temptation of winning elections at all cost, drawing its attention to events of the Second Republic. The admonition, according to the opposition party, became necessary following what it described as plot by the APC to win today’s governorship re-run election in the South-south state. “It was the quest of winning elections at all cost that led to the collapse of the Second Republic,” PDP reminded the

Lassa fever kills 40 in 10 states, as govts intensify health education Toyin Adebayo, Abuja

he Federal Government raised the level of health consciousness yesterday saying that Lassa fever has killed 40 persons, with a total of 86 reported cases pushing the mortality rate to 43.2%. The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, at a press brieÀng to allay the fears of Nigerian on the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in some parts of the country, said there

is urgent need to stop transmission of the disease in the communities and the country’s health facilities through public sensitization. “Health education materials have been distributed to all states, particularly the aͿected areas for eͿective health promotion to enhance good community hygiene including food hygiene and food protection practices,” he said. The minister urged the citizens to ensure that they avoid contact with rodents or rats, as well as food or objects contaminated with rats’

secretions and excretions. “Avoid drying food in the open and along the roadside. It is also important to prevent rodents’ contamination, and lastly, all suspected cases should be reported immediately to enable early treatment,” he added. Prof. Adewole, however, noted that his ministry has taken measures to curtail further spread and reduce mortality among those aͿected, which includes the immediate release of adequate quantities of ribavirin, >>Continued on Page 3
