A Round of Applause. While the shift to online classes brought the Class of 2020's senior year to an abrupt end without the usual celebrations and an in-person commencement, the pandemic should not overshadow their time at Penn. On campus, the graduates experienced historic moments together such as 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump’s election and the Eagles’ firstever Super Bowl victory. Students also challenged the administration on multiple fronts, including a call for divestment from fossil fuels. Take a look back at the Class of 2020’s journey at Penn from 2016 to 2020.
take on the world! Saying goodbye at Commencement is usually bittersweet, but on this occasion I am delighted not to be saying a final adieu but a more imminent au revoir, for we will be seeing one another again. Just in case you have not already done so, please mark your calendars for the weekend of May 22 & 23, 2021 when we plan to reunite, in person, taking our traditional march down Locust Walk to the Class of 2020 Commencement Celebration in Franklin Field. We plan on making yours a celebration like no other. I hope every one of you will be there to join with me, the deans, your professors, classmates, families, and friends for a very special time to reconnect with a campus community that holds you in the very highest esteem. Getting to know you over the past four years has been a pleasure and a privilege. Now more than ever, the world needs your enthusiasm and your profound commitment to joining together and making things better. Certainly, we will emerge from this global pandemic a changed world. Knowing you as I do and all you bring to bear, I am confident we can emerge not just to a changed world, but to a far better world as well. Nothing gives me greater hope for the future than knowing a new generation of Penn graduates is making their way in the world. Remember us always and stay in touch. Penn is immensely proud of you, as am I.

DEAR CLASS OF 2020,
strengthened by our shared experience. Contrary to the commencement of our journey, we have now gained the nourishment to conquer this next chapter. Nonetheless, on May 19th, we all woke up with the same question and the same state of being: what now? Truly, the million-dollar question. Beyond showing gratitude to our family, friends, professors, and mentors, there is no simple answer. In some ways, that morning has the qualities of one of those life-altering, actualizing moments. While only time will tell if that is true, those feelings of being lost, dazed and nervous are slowly reemerging. But we can now look to Penn for the answer. We approach this next chapter with the values represented by the Red and the Blue. The symbolism of Red is love, passion, strength, and courage. The symbolism of Blue is confidence, security, comfort, and loyalty. Combining these values with the nourishment of our Penn experience will propel us farther than seems possible today. With growth and memories to last a lifetime, we leave Penn, our alma mater, as alumni. Another Latin term, the root of this one means “one who is nourished.” On many fronts, this meaning finally holds true. With an excited spirit and childlike curiosity, it is now on us to go out into the world and pay it forward. In the hopes that we too can someday nourish future generations.
WITH LOVE,
KARIM EL SEWEDY President, Class Board 2020
GRADUATION ISSUE
Penn is now our alma mater. Just as we oftentimes undervalue the incredible university we have graduated from, the meaning of the term alma mater is one we take for granted. Colloquially, we know for it to mean the school, college or university that we have attended – and hopefully a badge that we wear with pride. What you wouldn’t expect is that at the root of this unique Latin term, it means “nourishing or bountiful mother.” At times, it has felt that the Penn experience has done just the opposite of nourishing us. After all, we have been pulled and pushed in every direction. However, reflecting upon my feelings from when this journey all began solidifies the meaning of this age-old Latin phrase. On August 26th, 2016, my family departed after dropping me off at Penn. I remember the moments that made up that day too vividly. The dreaded feelings of sorrow, confusion, and fear were strong as we stood outside Kings Court English House one last time. They were asking to say goodbye, but all I asked was that they not leave me. I held my tears long enough to take a photo to mark this momentous occasion. After one last congregation, I felt weak and alone as I watched my family get in the car and drive away. I was lost, dazed, and nervous at the beginning of this dazzling new chapter. I was devoid of the confidence, experience, and perspective to take on the challenges that this chapter would bring. I was the farthest thing
from nourished. I couldn’t have known at the time, but looking back at this moment four years later, I get goosebumps: that’s when this journey all became real. That’s when it all changed. How many moments in life can you point to and say that about? Whether it was upon receiving your acceptance, or upon walking into your first lecture, we all had that moment and never even really knew it. From that moment onwards, our alma mater nourished us with classes with world-renowned professors, talks with celebrities, discussions with brilliant peers, experiences with crazy stories, events with wild entertainment, and memories with lifelong friends. NSOs. Convocations. Wawa runs. Snow days. Halloweens. Holis. Flings. Super Bowl wins. Restaurant Weeks. Hey Days. Feb Clubs. Smoke’s. Formals. Games. Shows. And so, so much more. There were so many big things and so many little things. We must not let the last two months take away from the last four years. While the Penn experience has meant something different for each of us, the one undisputed, unifying factor is that we are the Class of 2020. We are not the cursed class. We are not the unlucky class. The Class of 2020 is a class of entrepreneurs, academics, designers, authors, chefs, artists, politicians, musicians, athletes and Penn students. We’ve left an indelible mark on this 280-year-old institution. United by Penn, we have conquered unimaginable obstacles, organized and celebrated remotely, and come out more resilient on the other side. The mosaic of our class is

TO THE INCOMPARABLE CLASS OF 2020:
Four years ago, when we first met at Convocation, I described how you were a class like no other. As it turns out, I couldn’t have predicted the half of it. Your Class – this amazing, irrepressible, unsinkable Class of 2020 – has come through the greatest disruptions of our time to arrive at a doubly unforgettable milestone of your lives. You are graduating Penn, intact, indefatigable, and ready to take on the world. And you also will be celebrating again, on Penn’s campus, once our city, country and world sends this pandemic packing. Permit me to convey my warmest congratulations to you all–along with the deepest appreciation and admiration for what you have endured to get here! We leave college so very changed from when we entered that we come to think of ourselves as different people. For this class, at this unique moment in history, the world seems every bit as changed as well. Despite all that has transpired, the sun still rises, music, poetry, and the arts continue to bring us joy, and so very many profound challenges and opportunities call for our attention – and most especially, for the solutions that only the Class of 2020 can begin to provide. In times such as these, the need for your unique talents has never been greater. You have been, you are, and you will always be, an exceptionally capable, talented, caring, and compassionate Class. You have achieved great things – on the playing fields, in our community and in laboratories, classrooms, and seminars touching on every academic discipline. Because of your efforts, you leave Penn a fuller, richer, more exciting and dynamic institution than when you arrived. What a great start – now it’s time to

THROUGH THE YEARS By Elizabeth Meisenzahl, Kamille Houston, Jonah Charlton, & Katie Busch
From Donald Trump's win in the 2016 presidential election, to hundreds of flyers titled “THIS IS WHAT RAPE CULTURE LOOKS LIKE” posted across campus, to racially explicit texts targeting Penn students of color, the Class of 2020's first year at Penn saw great shock, tension, and resilience within the Penn community.
POLITICS Early morning on Nov. 9, 2016, 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump was officially declared president of the United States. After Hillary Clinton won all seven precincts near campus, news of Trump's victory shook Penn's campus. At a University Council meeting on Nov. 9, students told Penn President Amy Gutmann they felt "fearful" and "terrified" for the future of their country. Penn Dems released a statement on Clinton's disappointing loss and vowed to continue fighting for the rights of women and minorities. College Republicans were split on the election, after some supported Trump throughout the campaign and others declined to support his candidacy. Later that day, hundreds of students and faculty gathered on College Green for a solidarity walk co-organized by 23 student groups in the wake of Trump's election. Gutmann said at the University Council meeting she would be unable to attend the solidarity walk due to a "Penn dinner," but would be there in spirit. After leaving the White House upon Trump's election, former Vice President Joe Biden became a Penn professor under the title "Benjamin Franklin Presidential Practice Professor" in February 2017. Biden would not teach students during his professorship, but oversaw the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, D.C. In early September 2016, students woke up to hundreds of flyers posted across campus featuring an email sent by an account ozyellowbrickroad1@gmail.com stamped with “THIS IS WHAT RAPE CULTURE LOOKS LIKE” and “WE ARE WATCHING.” The flyer included part of an email that off-campus fraternity OZ sent to first-year women on Aug. 31, 2016 that read, “May we have your attention please/We’re looking for the fun ones/And say f**k off to a tease,” and instructed first-year women to “wear something tight.” Gutmann spoke out against the suggestive email, condemning it as having “no place” at Penn. Despite more than 900 members of sororities and all-female organizations condemning the emails, OZ did not face disciplinary action. On Sept. 22, 2016, the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Divestment, which was formed in March 2016 to consider Fossil Free Penn's divestment proposal in November 2015, made a unanimous recommendation not to divest from fossil fuels. In November 2016, Fossil Free Penn held a seven-hour sit-in outside Gutmann’s office to demand an on-the-record
ADMISSIONS SCANDAL Former Penn men’s basketball coach Jerome Allen pleaded guilty in October 2018 to accepting bribes in exchange for the recruitment of a player. In March 2019, Allen testified in a federal trial that Penn parent Philip Esformes paid him to facilitate his son’s recruitment in 2015. Days after Allen's testimony, court documents unsealed by the United States Department of Justice charged 50 people for partaking in a bribery scam to get prospective students into elite schools. The crimes included bribing college officials to falsify identities of students as recruited athletes and cheating on entrance exams. Although Penn was not among the institutions named in the national scandal, Dean of Admissions Eric Furda told The Daily Pennsylvanian that Penn would consider revising its recruitment and admissions processes. On March 18, 2019, bank records showed that Esformes sent more than $400,000 to the charity of William Singer, CEO of college preparatory company The Key Worldwide Foundation. On April 4, Esformes was found guilty on 20 charges, including bribery, in Miami federal court, and later sentenced to 20 years in prison, according to the Miami Herald. Allen was sentenced to four years of probation, 600 hours of community service, and a fine of $202,000 on July 1. The next day, Penn Athletics removed Allen from its Hall of Fame.

meeting with Gutmann and open dialogue as to why the University decided not to divest from fossil fuels. Several first-year Penn students of color were unwillingly added to a GroupMe message in November 2016 labeled "Mud Men," containing racially explicit content. A University of Oklahoma student was temporarily suspended for being involved in sending the racist messages. Later that month, faculty led a solidarity march for students of color across campus attended by students and administrators, including Gutmann. Participants in the march held Black Lives Matter signs, and faculty leaders said the march also aimed to show solidarity with Black students after Trump's election.
NEW ON CAMPUS Lauder College House, then named New College House, opened its doors in August 2016 to house approximately 350 students. Consisting solely of suite-style rooms, the college house was the culmination of three years of construction and a $127 million budget. In April 2017, the University named Wendell Pritchett, the Presidential Professor of Law and Education at Penn Law at the time, the new provost. Pritchett would replace Vincent Price, who announced in December he would leave his post to become president of Duke University.
2017—2018 From the Eagles' first-ever Super Bowl victory, to a contentious Amy Wax op-ed, the Class of 2020's sophomore year was defined by controversy and celebration.
STUDENT LIFE In May 2018, Penn launched the Penn First Plus office to better support first-generation, low-income students. The office is intended to serve as a place for FGLI students to form a community, and to learn about and utilize campus resources. The office's establishment came after Penn admitted an increased number of first-generation students into the Class of 2022. Penn administrators and student leaders committed to strengthening mental health resources after 2017 saw the death by suicide of seven students. Penn held a “Campus Conversation” to discuss community resilience in the wake of different tragedies, including student deaths, and the University hired five new Counseling and Psychological Services staffers. Students, including Penn's chapter of the national nonprofit organization Project Let's Erase Stigma, encouraged dialogues around mental health
On Feb. 4, the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time. On campus, students watched the game from Houston Hall and college houses, and others crowded in different bars around Philadelphia. In the aftermath, students took to the streets of University City to celebrate. Former Penn football star and wide receiver Justin Watson was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making him the first Quaker drafted to the National Football League since 2002. A number of Penn teams celebrated their own victories in 2018. The Penn track and field women took home first place and the men earned second place at the 2018 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships, with the women scoring a program-record 177 points, and the men scoring 142 points. Penn men’s basketball defeated Harvard in the Ivy League Tournament final at the Palestra, clinching its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2007. Although the Quakers were eventually eliminated by top-seeded Kansas in the first round, they played a strong game against the Jayhawks. Both Penn men's fencing and women’s lacrosse continued to impress, each winning their third consecutive Ivy League titles in 2018.
ACTIVISM ON CAMPUS In September 2017, graduate student leaders wrote a petition to improve sexual harassment policies and procedures within the Graduate School of Education. The petition, addressed to GSE Dean Pam Grossman, started after students brought attention to sexual harassment by faculty. Students found current sexual harassment policies inadequate, with unclear reporting procedures and doubts about confidentiality. In response to the petition, Grossman reaffirmed existing harassment reporting procedures, and promised to establish mandatory sexual harassment training for faculty and staff. Graduate students took further steps in activism that year. On Dec. 8, about 50 graduate students met with an administrator and faculty during a town hall to discuss Penn’s response to a Republican tax bill. A provision of the bill would have taxed tuition waivers for graduate students, causing them to lose almost 40% of their income. Students worried about the bill urged Penn to draft a response to the bill and create a plan to protect graduate students if the bill were to be finalized. In December, the final draft of the bill ultimately scrapped the tuition waver tax.
COMMUNITY In September 2018, Penn announced that all undergraduate sophomore students must live in college housing beginning with the Class of 2024, who will arrive on campus in fall 2020. The decision was part of an initiative to create a "Second Year Experience Program" for sophomore students. "We believe that a two-year College House system will measurably strengthen the sense of community among our first and second-year students — promoting students’ achievement and well-being, enhancing support for students’ academic and social lives," Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Wendell Pritchett wrote in an email to the Penn community. Former UA President and 2019 College graduate Michael Krone told the DP that Greek leaders from the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council met with administrators earlier that week to discuss the implications the decision would have on Greek life at Penn. Greek leaders raised concerns that they may struggle to fill their houses and eventually risk losing them if sophomores are no longer able to live in these chapter houses. In October 2018, Executive Director for Business Services Doug Berger told the DP that the Quad would undergo a renovation as part of the University's plan to overhaul major buildings on campus. The renovation, which will likely take place three to five years from now, will be the Quad's first renovation in approximately 20 years. The same month, nearly two dozen rooms in the Quad experienced mold issues, prompting health concerns and students relocating to other rooms on campus. On Dec. 3, 2018, Penn broke ground on the construction of its recordbreaking $163 million dorm, New College House West, on the corner of 40th and Walnut streets. NCHW is slated to open in fall 2021.
2019—2020 Instead of spending their last few months at Penn celebrating with friends, seniors sheltered in place around the globe and grappled with the fact that their time at Penn had ended so suddenly. While COVID-19 will certainly be the defining feature of the 20192020 school year, much happened even before Penn instructed students not to return from spring break.
CAMPUS Campus buildings underwent a series of name changes this year. New College House was renamed Lauder College House after a major donation from the Lauder family, whose members are prominent philanthropists and have made donations to Penn in the past. The University of Pennsylvania Law School was renamed the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School in November, following a $125 million donation from the W.P. Carey Foundation. The donation is the largest single gift to any law school, and prompted the school's shortened name to change from "Penn Law" to "Carey Law." But later that month, following significant backlash about the name change and a petition signed by thousands of students and alumni, the administration decided to temporarily change the school's shortened title from Carey Law back to Penn Law. In fall 2022, the shortened name will become "Penn Carey Law." Design students spoke out against Penn's decision to rename the School of Design the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, following a donation from 1963 Wharton alumnus and fashion icon Stuart Weitzman. Although the donation freed the school from longstanding financial issues, design students feared the new title would misrepresent the school, which currently does not offer courses in fashion design.

2018—2019 The Class of 2020's junior year at Penn saw a record-breaking turnout at the 2018 midterm elections and the emergence of an admissions scandal that took the nation by storm in spring 2019.
POLITICS Penn students turned out in record-breaking numbers for the 2018 midterm elections. On Nov. 6, 2018, a total of 2,762 ballots were cast on campus, more than double the count from the 2014 midterms. Head coach Iain Braddak ultimately resigned in January and was replaced by Meredith Schamun. Athletes were devastated after their seasons came to a sudden end in response to the coronavirus. The Ivy League men's and women's basketball tournaments were the first events to be canceled, followed by all spring sports after March 11. The Penn Relays was also canceled for the first time in the event's 126-year history. In lieu of in-person events, the firstever Digital Penn Relays offered spectators the chance to watch athletes participate in Minecraft races, accompanied by various commentators and special guests.

CONTROVERSIES The 2017-2018 academic year saw several controversies from Penn faculty and affiliates. In August 2017, Penn Law professor Amy Wax coauthored an op-ed in The Philadelphia Inquirer, which argued that white, Anglo-Protestant culture is superior to non-white cultures. The piece sparked outrage on campus, and in March 2018, Wax was banned from teaching a mandatory first-year course. In February 2018, after multiple reports of sexual misconduct by former Penn Trustee Steve Wynn, Penn removed Wynn’s name from the common area outside of Houston Hall. The common area, formerly named Wynn Commons, was renamed Penn Commons. In April, allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against then-Psychology professor, Robert Kurzban. Multiple students alleged that Kurzban had romantic relationships with undergraduate students he directly oversaw. These alleged relationships violated University policy, which prohibits sexual relationships between faculty and students for whom they have “supervisory academic responsibility.” Kurzban eventually resigned in July after University investigations. In March, the University changed its policy to prohibit all sexual relationships between current undergraduate students and faculty, instead of just "during the period of the teacherstudent relationship."

POLITICS
On-campus political groups spent much of this year campaigning for the 2020 Democratic Presidential primaries. Penn for Bernie and Penn for Biden sent members to canvass in New Hampshire the weekend of the state's first-in-the-nation primary in February. Penn Democrats endorsed Biden for president in late March, even though the group was split, with some members still supporting Sanders in the primary. Former Vice President and Penn Presidential professor of Practice Joe Biden became the presumptive Democratic nominee in April, after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) ended his campaign. Now, two Penn affiliates will face off in November: Biden and incumbent 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who taught at Penn Law from 1987 to 1995, had also faced off against Biden for the Democratic nomination. She dropped out of the race in early March. Student activism made waves on campus this year. Fossil Free Penn continued to hold weekly sit-ins in College Hall and protest Board of Trustees meetings. The group shut down one meeting in November 2019, and blockaded another in February 2020, forcing most trustees to leave the Inn at Penn through the fire exit. When Penn announced in February it would not invest in coal and tar sands industries, Fossil Free Penn celebrated a small victory. But the group said it will continue to protest and hold administration accountable, pushing the University to fully divest from fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions.

Gregory Eells, Penn's executive director of Counseling and Psychological Services, died by suicide in

Student groups continued to advocate for better mental health resources and general wellness, which they said took on renewed importance following Eells' death. The Undergraduate Assembly worked to integrate CAPS clinicians into more undergraduate schools. The Student Committee on Undergraduate Education released its 2020 White Paper, which listed the ability to schedule CAPS appointments online as a primary goal. In February, CAPS launched a new behavioral health consultant program to bridge CAPS and Student Health Services resources in order to streamline communication between the two organizations and provide more

4 GRADUATION ISSUE 22
I
t didn’t take me long to fall in love with The Daily Pennsylvanian. It was election night in 2016, and as a young, wide-eyed reporter, I saw student editors running through hallways, making high-stakes decisions, doling out breaking assignments, yelling at each other over the intercom. It was the picturesque movie scene I longed for when touring colleges. A group of students drawn together by their love for the DP, and driven by their commitment to its mission. I knew I wanted to be part of it, and I’ve spent the three and a half years since trying to get people to feel the same way. I know when I look back at these four years of my life, the image I conjure up of what college was like will be a freeze-frame of the DP newsroom. I’ve sacrificed a lot for the DP – hours and hours of sleep, and socially and academically, too – but I leave now with more than I could have ever imagined. A journalism education, lifelong friends and mentors, the experience of running my own newsroom. The DP taught me to listen, to make tough decisions, to put the interests of a group before my own. There have been many times during the past four years that I’ve thought about what I would write in my senior column. I thought about the editors who came before me,
and how they must have been in similar positions. How do I do justice to an institution that has been instrumental to making these past four years some of the best in my life? How do I say thank you? I realize, though, that my position is also unique. My graduation from Penn coincides with Eric Jacobs’ retirement from the DP after four decades as general manager. From the start of my time at Penn, I’ve known Eric to be the DP’s guiding light. Not everyone sees his shadow behind the curtain, but those who do can attest that he is the force behind everything we do at the DP. His legacy will shine for decades to come. I don’t pretend to know the extent of Eric’s impact at Penn, the broader journalism world, or even just at the DP. But I know the difference he has made in my life, and I know everything good that has happened at the DP in the last 40 years is in some way because of him. And I want to use my senior column to say thank you. I feel lucky to have met Eric early on. My editor first introduced me to him when I was a reporter, and I couldn’t believe his wealth of knowledge. Eric covered Penn’s administration as an undergraduate in the late ’70s, and he has since watched as the University, its campus, and its policies evolved over time. I was young and
holistic care for students. After campus shuttered in March, CAPS shifted all standing and drop-in appointments to confidential video and phone calls, and created a page on its website consolidating strategies to help students cope with drastic changes to their daily lives.
CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
The year took a historic turn in March, when the Penn community evacuated campus due to the coronavirus outbreak. Students, faculty, and staff were all forced to quickly adjust to social distancing and other restrictive measures, while still attempting to complete their work remotely. The limited availability of on-campus housing during the pandemic left many students scrambling to find a place to stay. Students struggled with remote learning. Some had difficulty accessing reliable Wi-Fi and technology, while many international students who returned home to different countries and time zones had to attend class late at night. Penn announced in April that it will issue pro-rated refunds to students in University housing and on meal plans. Some students are also calling for tuition refunds, citing a lower quality of learning after classes became virtual. Following a nationwide collegiate trend, one Penn graduate student filed a class action lawsuit demanding tuition refunds – but the University called the lawsuit "misdirected and wholly without merit." Many Penn traditions were altered as a result of the virus. Hey Day, during which members of the junior class are pronounced seniors, was held virtually on April 30. In-person Commencement was initially canceled and commemorated with a virtual ceremony on May 18, but later rescheduled for May 2021.
one of hundreds on staff, but Eric never turned me away if I asked for context on a new story assignment. When I was elected news editor and then senior news editor, Eric helped me with those transitions, too. When I was executive editor, there were few people whose support and guidance I relied on more. I’m always surprised to hear there are people at the DP who don’t know Eric, but that just shows how good he is at his job. He gives editorial guidance when approached, but would never undermine student editors. He offers detailed solutions to problems, but lets editors present them as their own. He never makes it seem as if anything is more important than listening to students, but will still be working at his desk when I leave the office at 3 a.m. He takes pride in student successes and doesn’t expect credit. He believes in his students, and he believes in student journalism. There’s a recurring joke at the DP that every year, a new board comes along thinking the problems it faces and the circumstances it is in are somehow unprecedented, and that it is Eric’s job to explain to the new student leaders why they’re wrong. I think this year, however, it’s safe to say they would be right. But Eric’s legacy extends beyond his institutional memory of the DP – it lives on in the service to the organization, the community he has built, and the strong student leaders who are equipped to handle any obstacle their board might face. To the 136 – I am blown away by you all every day. I imagine this is not what you expected your board term to be like, and no one can understand the unique challenges you are facing. But find strength and support in one another, and know that the work you are doing is truly making a difference. The entire Penn community is grateful to you, and I am so proud to be able to call myself a DP alum.

It's a process, not a plan
climb.” And I learned that at the DP. So rather than seeing my uncertainty about graduation, about post-COVID-life, even, as the summative part of my Penn experience, I’m trying to look at the process. And the DP is the place at Penn that most values and in fact emphasizes process. Penn is a results-oriented place, and I’m a results-oriented person. But my time at the DP and Street helped me un-learn that. Every production night was a process: a series of choices and edits and check-marks and text messages with Matt or Burke from Delaware Printing Company. Every story was a process, from pitching to writing to editing to promotion. Every day involved some sort of process, whether it was figuring out how to respond to an angry email or how to structure our next special issue. Even me getting to Street, to writing, was a process. It took me a while to realize I didn’t want to study business, to study what I loved instead of what I thought I should want to do, and to funnel my ambition into something that felt like it really mattered to me. Street gave me friends and mentors and a place to call home. It also gave me the experience of vomiting in the office bathroom when I got a stomach flu during last spring’s
Dining Guide, and the sleep schedule of a nocturnal rodent on West Coast time. And I’ll remember all of that. Those processes—good, bad, and ugly alike—couldn’t have happened anywhere else. And neither could the hardest realization of my college life: that having a plan isn’t the same thing as having a process. And having a process is better. I know this because of the people at Street and the DP, who are willing to work hard, to work fast, and to work together. And I know this because this place gave me the support to start the process of uncovering who I was, and hopefully, who I’ll become. To the denizens of the Street office and the Blue Room and elsewhere, keep eating sheet cakes, even if they aren’t from FroGro anymore, even if you have to eat them over Zoom calls rather than over print proofs. I’m not a sports person, but I hear their advice is to “trust the process.” So that’s my advice to the next generation of Street misfits and DP dwellers. It’s the climb, kids. And it’s the best climb there is.

t’s weird to think about now, but someday we’ll look back at the writing that we did during this pandemic, at the photos we took and the banana bread we baked, as a kind of living memory. And I want mine to be authentic. So let it be known that this week, I ate a copious amount of pizza bagels, listened to Rumours on repeat (never a good sign) and generally felt sorry for myself. I don’t particularly want to write this. But if I write a sunnier column, I’ll look back and know that this wasn’t an accurate representation of the end of senior year. This spring has been a time of crushing disappointments: senior year cut short, the death of my grandmother, no graduation. And, on May 1, I found out I was also unemployed post-grad. The summer internship I’d been banking on wasn’t happening due to coronavirus. So, things suck right now, for me and for everyone. I’m lucky that things don’t suck worse, lucky that these are the worst of my losses. But I still feel them, and I think all of us seniors do want some closure. But maybe closure’s a myth. And even though recency bias means that this time might be what I associate with college for a while, I’m trying to work on that. Because college, like anything, is a process. And I’m also feeling better. What got me feeling better was thinking about my time at Street and the DP, remembering when I stole the aux cord at Street formal to play the Succession theme song, or the triumph of sending an issue to print just before deadline. It was remembering late nights and frantic Slack messages, all the editorial and personal crises that happened for me, for us, in that windowless space. It’s tempting to look at time at Penn as a blip, a wrinkle in time before charging into the “real world.” But the time in-between, the liminal space of actually living, is real and valuable. As my good friend Miley Cyrus once crooned, “it’s the
