The Sphinx Senior Society is pleased to induct its Honorary Member for 2024. He is Dr. Drew Weissman. Drew Weissman, MD, PhD, is a world-renowned physician and researcher at Penn Medicine, best known for his contributions to RNA biology and the COVID-19 vaccines. Dr. Weissman and Katalin Karinko, PhD, were jointly awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the modified mRNA technology being used in Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna’s vaccines to prevent COVID-19. Dr. Weissman and his team are currently at work on a pan-coronavirus vaccine to stop the next coronavirus epidemic, a universal flu vaccine, and a vaccine to prevent herpes. They are working with Penn colleagues to develop cancer therapeutics with mRNA technology. Dr. Weissman’s lab is also developing a SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine with Chulalongkorn University in Thailand to help residents of Thailand and other surrounding nations with fewer financial resources than the United States access lifesaving vaccines. Sphinx is proud to include Dr. Weissman on its list of distinguished Honorary Members.

The Society is also pleased to present the 2024 winner of the annual Sphinx Senior Society Paul Miller Award for Public Service Leadership. He is Milan Chand, C’24. Milan has dedicated his college career to being a “leader of leaders” in the tradition of the late Paul Miller, C’83*.

The Society recognizes Milan for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to equity, creating informed, diverse and empowered communities at the University of Pennsylvania and beyond; for his leadership and dedication to mental health awareness, education, and advocacy, serving as liaison between students and the mental health community as President of Active Minds as well as performing primary research at Penn’s Boundaries of Anxiety and Depression Lab; for promoting international affairs and diplomacy, while fostering academic interest in the world at large as Chief of Staff of Intercol, of the International Affairs Association; for championing the underserved, working to provide the infrastructure needed to educate, innovate, and advance efforts designed to eliminate health and health care disparities as part of Penn’s Center for Health Equity Advancement; for his focus on healing as a Peer Practitioner with the Center for Community Standards and Accountability, creating new initiatives with fellow
