Buhari sacks Dawha, Juwah as NNPC, NCC bosses I
n the wake of the pressures mounted on Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government over appointment of key government officials, the presidency on Tuesday announced the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. DAILY POST recalls that the Corporation has recently been described by many Nigerians, particularly political and economic analysts, as the hotbed of corruption in the country. Billions have been reportedly looted by the past administration through the NNPC. An independent investigative analysis by the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) further disclosed that over $32 billion oil revenue was constantly been wasted as a result of NNPC’s mismanagement of Domestic Crude Allocation (DCA), opaque revenue retention practices and corruption-ridden oil-for-product swap agreements. The report shows how NNPC sells its oil, and how the national oil company’s discretionary spending from domestic crude oil sale revenues has risen steeply beyond $6 billion a year for the 2011 to 2013 period. However, in his determination to clean up the Corporation of widespread corruption, President Buhari recently dissolved its board, sending fears into many of its offi-
Buhari cials who may have been enmeshed in corrupt practices. The latest appointment has may however appease the Igbos, who have continued to agitate that their interests be considered by the Buhari’s led government. Confirming the appointment, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Femi Adesina said Dr. Kachikwu, who was the Executive Vice Chairman and General Counsel of Exxon-Mobil (Africa), will now take over from Dr. Joseph Thlama Dawha.
Dr. Kachikwu hails from Onicha-Ugbo in Delta State. He is a First Class Graduate of Law from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the Nigerian Law School. The new NNPC Chief Executive also has Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Law from the Harvard Law School. He started his working career with the Nigerian/American Merchant Bank before moving on to Texaco Nigeria Limited where he remained for about eight years before joining ExxonMobil.
Boko Haram surrenders • Ready for dialogue with FG – CCC
T
he assertion by the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai to make Boko Haram insurgents beg for mercy may have come true so soon as the dreaded terrorists are said to have started making contacts with the Centre for Crisis Communication, CCC, to initiate a dialogue process with the federal government on their behalf. This is also coming on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari’s vow that Boko Haram insurgency will be terminated by the end of this year and his recent statement during a visit to the United States that he is open to dialogue from genuine members of the group. It was gathered on Tuesday that the Sect members have made several calls to the Centre claiming that hundreds of their members who were worn out and hold contrary view to the destructive and murderous activities of the terrorist organization were willing to lay down their arms for amnesty. The Executive Secretary of the Centre for Crisis Communication, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas (rtd), who made this disclosure yesterday in Abuja, said, “The efforts by some members of the group to get across to the Centre and the discussions we have had, have been encouraging. We have taken measures also to ascertain the genuineness or otherwise of these persons. We believe they are ready for genuine dialogue. However, discussions are still ongoing and nothing concrete has been arrived at, but it is an opportunity to interact with what I call insiders in the Boko Haram group”. Commodore Anas stated this while speaking on sundry national
issues including terrorism, cattle rustling, National Assembly crisis, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping, armed robbery, Radio Biafra, asserting that his team is already in the process of facilitating a meeting with relevant government agencies regarding the overtures of the terrorists. According to him, “The Boko Haram challenges have continued to become an intractable crisis situation to our nation. Recently, Governor Kashim Shetima of Borno Stated that ‘more than 3million innocent Nigerians from Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and other parts of Nigeria live in deep agony, having lost their sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, relations and neighbours after being brutally attacked by members of
the Boko Haram”. “Some prominent Nigerians have in recent times canvassed the idea of dialogue with the Boko Haram. The option of dialogue according to them, at the moment provides a leeway of not only safely rescuing the abducted Chibok School Girls alive but also possibly bringing to an end, the orgy of violence unleashed on innocent Nigerians by the group”. “Considering the unspeakable atrocities which the group has visited on Nigeria and Nigerians, this option is no doubt a hard sell. However, the recent statement of President Muhammadu Buhari on government’s readiness to negotiate with credible members of the sect has rekindled hope for dialogue”. The Centre noted that the
In the same vein, President Buhari has also approved the appointment of Professor Umaru Garba Danbatta as the new Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Prof. Danbatta, who holds a Doctorate Degree in Electronic Engineering, takes over from Dr. Eugene Juwah whose tenure expired on July 29, 2015. The new NCC Chief Executive’s other academic qualifications include a Bachelors Degree in Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications as well as a Masters Degree in the same field. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and has had a meritorious career in which he rose to become Professor of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at Bayero University, Kano, specializing in Telecommunications Engineering and Information and Communications Technology. Before his new appointment, Prof. Danbatta held top management and leadership positions at different times including Head of Department, Dean Of Faculty, Director, Centre for Information Technology, Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (Kano Branch), Deputy Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor. His appointment as Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC is for five years in the first instance.
development is a good one because it has opened a window of opportunity for dialogue for the insurgents that are willing and ready to lay down their arms. It added that, “This position is predicated on calls made to the Centre by some members of the Boko Haram requesting for genuine and comprehensive dialogue that could lead to hundreds of them coming out to renounce their membership”. Consequent upon this, Commodore Anas said, “From discussions held so far, the members seem to be speaking on behalf of a cross section of the group. They expressed willingness to come forward to make certain proposals on behalf of other members of the group. If we pursue this line, I believe something positive will come out”. “The Centre however suggests that such dialogue should be done with every sense of caution and responsibility bearing in mind the previous disappointments that attended attempts at negotiations,” he stated.
Olumba Olumba warns against same-sex marriage By Sylvester Ugwuanyi
T
he Spiritual Leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu has warned Nigerians and the rest of the world to be wary of the consequences of all forms of homosexuality, calling on those involved in the act to “think twice”. Olumba Obu, who gave this warning yesterday in Calabar, the Cross Rivers State capital, when
members of the Correspondents’ chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, paid him a courtesy call, insisted that “same sex marriage is a direct disobedience to God’s injunction”. Speaking through Bishop Princely Ibeabuchi, the Spiritual Leader reiterated that God created man and women and charged them to go and multiply and replenish the earth and described homosexuality as an “affront, an act of irrev-
erence and deliberate attempt to bring the word of God to naught”. While noting that the scriptures admonished all that “Thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is an abomination,” Leader Obu advised world leaders to seek the face of God in all their dealings and to lead their subjects in the fear of the Lord, rather than propagating ideals that are devilish.

Dickson will lose governorship polls – Former Commissioners By Seun Opejobi
A
n erstwhile commissioner in the ministry of Transport in Bayelsa State, Mrs Marie Ebikake and Ebikitin Diongoli on Tuesday said governor the state governor Seriake Dickson would lose the governorship polls if he contests in the next election. Both former commissioners stated this under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party Unity Forum. According to the erstwhile commissioners, the PDP would fail massively if Dickson is made the party flag bearer. According to reports, a source from Government House, who pleaded anonymity while reacting to the claim noted that Ebikake should not criticise the governor for poor performance as she allegedly ran down her ministry when she was the commissioner. The source further stated that Ebikake would soon be made to face the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for mismanaging the state’s restoration cabs fund worth millions of naira. “It is shocking that Ebikake, who was the deputy Director-General of Dickson Campaign Organisation and a ranking commissioner in Dickson’s administration, could be opening her mouth wide to attack her former boss. “She was given the mandate to purchase the state’s restoration cabs which she could not account for. She left with the files of purchases and has refused to return the files for the current Commissioner to track those given the taxis. “Whether she likes it or not, Dickson is the best foot for the PDP. Three and a half years of Dickson, the state has witnessed tremendous developments in all facets,” the source said.
IGP cautions against attacks on police formation By Seun Opejobi
T
he Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, yesterday cautioned against attacks on some police stations and formations across the nation. Arase gave the caution in a statement issued by CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Force spokesperson in Abuja. The IGP observed that an attack on a police station was a criminal offence and anyone caught in the act would be prosecuted. He urged members of the public to desist from such act as the consequences of indulging in such an action are grave. The police boss ordered all field commanders to use all force permitted by law to protect their stations and formations. “Members of the public are advised to explore

Borno Elders want Jonathan, others questioned over killings in North East By Wale Odunsi
T
he Borno Elders Forum (BEF) has reacted to revelation made by immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh at his ceremonial pullout from service that he presided over ill-equipped military and poorly motivated troops. Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, BEF Chairman, in a statement sent to DAILY POST yesterday said the Forum found Badeh’s comments as an “eye opener and extremely disturbing”. The statement said as Chief of Defence Staff under former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,
Jonathan
Alex Badeh was not just the head of all serving military men in Nigeria, he was also in the best position to know the state of affairs regarding the provision of military supplies and troops well-being. BEF recalled that sometime in 2014, the Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, publicly stated that troops deployed in the fight against insurgents seriously lacked required military equipment and that those at battle fronts were poorly motivated. The forum lamented that the comments were completely rebuffed by Jonathan, “who went as far as threatening to withdraw soldiers from Borno as he spoke on a live television interview relayed by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) during his occasional Presidential Media Chat.” Continuing, “Not only did the President rebuke the Governor and by extension, the people of Borno State, his aides followed suit. We deliberately refused to make any comment at that time because the president as Commander in Chief, was in the best position to speak on the capacity of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The Forum remained silent out of wisdom and not to complicate matters. “To our very rude shock, it turned out, the Governor was absolutely right after all. He has been vindicated by no less a person but the then Chief of Defence Staff who was the symbol of the Nigerian Armed Forces.” The Borno Elders Forum also
made demands from the Federal Government, the United Nations and the International community. They include: “A National Judicial Commission of Enquiry under an incorruptible judge from preferably the Southern Nigeria be set up to ask the immediate past President questions on why his administration refused to provide the military with the required functional and superior equipment whereas our sons and daughters were exposed to mass murder, severe injuries and grave destructions of our communities “That if the former Government is found wanting it should be
charged for genocide against the people of Borno State or at least criminal negligence at the International Criminal Court of Justice. “The retired CDS retired should also be asked why he kept silent when the military under his command was not provided with the right equipment. He had the option of speaking or resigning as he ought to have done in order to draw attention of the world and by that he would have saved lives of Borno people. “A list of citizens of Borno State killed from the time the issue of military capacity became in question, is compiled and relations of
those killed are fully compensated for the death of their loved ones as a result of criminal negligence. “A list of soldiers sent on missions without being properly equipped and exposed to death at different battle fronts in Borno State, is also compiled and that they are specifically celebrated with their survivors fully compensated since their bread winners died not just in combat but out of negligence of those in authority. “An unreserved apology is tendered by the immediate past President and his service chiefs to the people of Borno State, especially those lost relations and also to Governor Kashim Shettima for all the humiliation he was made to suffer for telling the truth about capacity of the military at that time.”
Lawyer sues Buhari for breach of oath over fuel crisis By Sylvester Ugwuanyi
A
legal practitioner, Kabir Akingbolu yesterday prayed a Federal High Court in Lagos to declare that President Muhammadu Buhari has breached his oath of office by allegedly failing to address the lingering fuel scarcity in the country. Akingbolu urged the court to issue an order directing the President to urgently fix the nation’s refineries in order to meet the petroleum products demand of the entire Nigerian masses. He claimed that the failure of the President to resolve the fuel scarcity crisis in the nation since his assumption of office on May 29, 2015 was a violation of “the clear and unambiguous provisions of Section 130 (1) and (2) of the
1999 Constitution, as amended.” In the affidavit filed in support of the suit, Akingbogun, who joined the Attorney General of the Federation as the second respondent in the suit, noted that though the official price for a litre of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, was N87, most petrol stations, however, sell for about N110 and above under Buhari’s watch. While arguing that the scarcity and the exorbitant price at which PMS was being sold had occasioned untold hardships on the citizenry, he said, “The price of PMS is now no longer at N87 per litre at most petrol stations but N110 and above in the country, creating untold hardship on the citizenry as well as the plaintiff who voted for the first defendant. “I know as a fact that very few
petrol stations still sell at N87 per litre and it is like going to a battlefield before the citizens can get petroleum products. “I know as a fact that the refineries have deliberately been ignored and left unfixed by the past administrations in Nigeria for their selfish interest and the current President might follow suit if not properly cautioned, hence the commencement of this suit. “If the refineries are fixed and are working in perfect condition, the situation of scarcity of petroleum products would come to an end, and the issue of spending huge amounts in the exportation of crude oil to be refined outside the country and subsequently imported back in, would come to an end,” the lawyer stated.

What Kogi needs is a leader like Wada, not a flamboyant Governor – Jacob Edi Mr. Jacob Edi is the Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada and a past Chairman of the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. In a telephone interview with DAILY POST’s Timothy Enietan-Matthews, Edi gave a recap of the achievements of the Wada administration, the clamour for power shift, cries of marginalization in the state and the November 21 governorship election, concluding that the people of Kogi State want a leader like Captain Idris Wada and not a flamboyant governor who is not accessible to the people.
G
overnor Idris Wada recently said he has not decided if he would run for second term or not but there are indications that some campaign publicity materials have surfaced in the state, what’s the official position on this? The governor has said it consistently that his second term ambition is in the hands of God and when it is ripe for him to make a public declaration, of course, he will. There is no law that forbids him from talking to the public when it is ripe. Don’t you think that with the heightened political activities in the state, especially with so many aspirants coming out, the governor needs to come out and tell the people of the state his stand? What makes you win election is not how soon you come out to declare your intention but how you are able to connect with your people, how you are able to deliver the dividends of democracy to your people. It also depends on how much you are loved by your people. What is happening in Kogi State now is that youths are coming out every day, begging Wada to contest again because, according to them, they like his style of leadership but he, Wada, has not said anything yet. We have had a governor in Kogi whose embroidery on his Agbada scares people but this time, we have a governor you can talk to directly or send a text. We have a governor who sees you like a human being and not an object that can only cast votes and this is what is making the people of Kogi to run over themselves, urging Wada to contest again. There is this allegation by a senior citizen in the state, specifically Senator Alex Kadiri, that the governor goes to his village every weekend and stations a staff at the gate to dole out five hundred naira to people, what is your reaction to this? Since you are from Kogi State, you can call your relatives to confirm if it is true or not. Dr Alex Kadiri is an incurable opposition man; there is no governor in the state he has not opposed, so we are not surprised that he descended so low to start lying. If he goes home to his village and his kinsmen come home to greet him and he gives them something for pure water, is that bad? Alex, who wants to be governor, if he becomes and he goes home and his people come to greet him, is he telling me that he will not give them something? They should
be able to take on Captain Wada on the issue of governance and performance or non-performance and not on mundane issues of whether he gave people one naira or not. As a sitting governor, if you go to your village and people come to greet you, you should be able to give them water to drink; this is the tradition of Africa. So what has he done that is wrong? Alex Kadiri should have been able to take us up on the issue of budget; how much was spent and not spent. If he does not have the mental capacity to do this, I am sorry to say he is not fit to be governor of Kogi State. He should have gotten beyond petty issues of the governor giving people one naira or not. The governor has been in power for more than three years, can you recap some of his achievements? The governor’s achievements goes beyond the decongesting water, he did this and that. What we are doing now is the sectoral analysis of his allocation in the area of welfare, infrastructure, physical development of the state, delivering goods, health, education, agriculture and these are the areas we are looking at now. And of course, we know that the governor has distinguished himself in terms of agro transformation; for this reason alone, he has been invited to three or four countries in Africa to come and give a talk on agro transformation - the Wada Model. Roads are being constructed in the state, Lokoja, the state capital is wearing a good look. As I speak to you now, there is an ongoing work to ensure that drainage systems are cleared, roads are been worked on, hospitals are being built. Just on Tuesday, the governor commissioned a high-tech vocational centre where the government spent over 400 million naira in counterpart funding. This centre will provide jobs for the people, improve the revenue base of the state and be a feeder for our technical institutions. The equipment in that place cannot be found anywhere in Nigeria and I stand to be corrected. There is no community in the state that the Wada government has not provided with water. Schools are been built and at the state university, as I speak now, there is a teaching hospital being built. There is also a modern diagnostic centre going on there. The development projects of Governor Wada cut across every part of the state. Kogi state does
Wade not owe salaries, though that has seemingly become the practice of other state. The state is up to date with the payment of salaries despite operating with very slim resources. There are people who say local government workers only collect half of their monthly salaries… First of all, the workers at the local government level are not supposed to collect their pay from the state government. The local governments take their allocation directly from the Federal allocation, so if the federal allocation is not much, how do you expect their pay to be much. The state government workers are being paid and they are taking the same amount federal workers collect. It should be noted that Kogi State is one of the few states paying the real minimum wage. Some people are ignorant; all they say is that Wada is not paying salaries but have forgotten that there are three tiers of government. Local government is one of the tiers and the money for local governments comes from the federal allocation. Don’t the state run joint account with the local government There are areas where the state and local government areas operate joint accounts but in the area of salary, there is no collaboration. It is just like the state and the federal governments; we have areas the state and the local governments cooperate. In the issue of payment of salaries, the government of Kogi State is autonomous and I can tell you that Captain Idris Wada does not interfere with the money of local government and I stand to be corrected. There has been serious clamour for power shift from the people of Kogi Central and West basically because of what they call marginalization of their people in the areas of appointments and allocation of resources; what is the position of government on this? I cannot tell you the position of government on this, because that will be as discussed at the state executive counsel level but what I can tell you is that the psychology of Captain Idris Wada is that, one, he believes in power shift, two, he believes that power is not the monopoly of any particular tribe. Also he believes that the issue of power shift is belittled when it is allowed to always come up
when there is an election or you use it around a particular candidate. The issue of power shift is a more serious issue that should be looked at politically, economically and socially. And then, let leaders of the respective ethnic groups sit down and discuss things thoroughly, because they are talking about the fate of the people. They should agree and come up with a working pact. Though power is all about the people and the majority always has their way but we are talking about political correctness here, hence there are technicalities that should have been worked out over a long period of time. We need a proper approach to understanding the issues involved in power rotation or power shift. So what happens to the issue of marginalization? The issue of marginalization is neither here nor there; every ethnic group cries about marginalization, so it is tricky but marginalization has become a song that
“The governor’s achievements go beyond the decongesting water, he did this and that. What we are doing now is the sectoral analysis of his allocation in the area of welfare, infrastructure, physical development of the state, delivering goods, health, education, agriculture and these are the areas we are looking at now”
people want to hear. Appointments are done on the basis of the ethnic groups that are in the state. If your community has five million votes and another has two thousand votes, there is no way, in all honesty, you will share things equally. President Buhari said recently that people who gave him 97 percent votes should be expected to be treated the same way with those who gave him 5 percent. That is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria talking, so where will you start the cry of marginalization from. Here in Kogi State, Governor Wada has done what is very fair compared to what it was before. May be those talking about marginalization are still leaving in those old days. Things have changed and I can assure you there is no marginalization. The statistics of appointments, employment and what goes to where in the state are available for all to see. Looking at the November governorship election, you have quite some formidable aspirants from the opposition party, especially the former governor of the state, Abubakar Audu, who claims to be a friend to Captain Wada. How do you think the election will go, bearing on mind the last presidential and legislative elections in the state? If you use the result of the last presidential and national elections, you should also remember that after the result of the presidential and National Assembly elections, we had the state election and today, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has majority of members in the State House of Assembly. That tells you that the psychology of state election was not the same as that of national elections. That we were able to wake up and get majority in the House of Assembly should tell you that we know what we are doing. We made mistakes and we amended the mistakes made. All is set for the emergence of Wada for a second term in office except he does not want to contest. He is what the people of Kogi State are looking for; the people of the state are looking for a leader and not just a governor. Wada is not just a governor, he is a leader. Others that are in the contest just want to be governors but a governor that is often too flamboyant and you cannot even go close to, a governor that people are afraid of is not what people are looking for. We are talking about a governor whose carriage and personality is inviting; who is fatherly. The bottom line is that Captain Idris Wada is a governor and a leader. These other people just want to be governors and that makes a lot of difference. Description: https://ssl.gstatic. com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif Just recently, an indigene of the state, Hon. Jubril Buba, emerged as the Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representative; how does it feel like for the state government? Any good thing that happens to any citizen of Kogi State comes to the government as a thing of joy. Wherever you find a Kogi man, he is distinguished. I am happy with his emergence because he is an indigene of the state. The state is happy, the people are happy and it is a good progress for the state.

Senate confirms Chief of Defence staff, Service Chiefs By Emmanuel Uzodinma
T
he Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs by President Buhari. Following the motion by Senate Leader, Ali Ndume seeking Committee of the whole, to confirm service chiefs, he drew the attention of the lawmakers to Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act to consider the request of President Buhari to confirm their appointment. “That the Senate do consider the request of Mr President, C-IN-C, for the confirmation of the following nominees for appointment as Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chief respectively”. Ndume said. Those confirmed are: Major General Amazonia Gabriel Olonisakin - Chief of Defence Staff Major General Tukur Yususfu Buratai - Chief of Army Staff Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas - Chief of Naval Staff Air Vice Marshall Sadique Baba Abubakar - Chief of Air Staff While congratulating the Service Chiefs on their confirmation , the Senate President charged them to provide a new leadership in the most challenging times, especially insecurity in the Northeast and other places. “I want to congratulate the Service Chiefs having been confirmed by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I do hope that you will provide a new leadership in the challenging times in the North East and other places in Nigeria”, Saraki said? He also took them to task by asking them to be focused so as to restore the lost glory of the military and to also ensure due process in procurement of military hardwares.
Extend your probes beyond Jonathan administration, CSJ tells Buhari
A
pressure group, the Centre for Social Justice, CSJ, yesterday, requested the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to extend its corruption probe beyond the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan into past governments. The Lead Director of CSJ, Eze
Oyekpere, who spoke in reaction to reports that President Buhari will limit his probe to the past administration, argued that it would be unfair to streamline corruption probes to only officials in the Jonathan government. Speaking on the sidelines of media briefing organized to reveal the outcome of the fiscal governance tribunals, the legal practitioner insisted that there were some unscrupulous deals conducted by previous governments that were still fresh in the minds of Nigerians. According to him, “I take a holistic view about recovering public properties that were stolen and mismanaged. For instance, the Halliburton issue, the Siemens scandal did not just come up under the last
administration. And those things are too recent for us to forget them. So I believe that he (Buhari) shouldn’t simply draw a line and say it is going to be from 2011 or from 2010, no. “He should go back a little bit, even the power scandal that involves an expenditure of over $15bn where we can’t see the results up till today. He should go back a little bit, it shouldn’t be about Jonathan’s administration viz-a-viz PDP, APC, no.“

Dabiri denies being a member of debtor firm, dismisses claim as fraudulent Sylvester Ugwuanyi
E
rstwhile House of Representatives’ Committee Chairman on Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has denied being on the board of Thriller Endeavours, that are reported to owe Diamond Bank N122.9m, procured between 2007 and 2008. In a statement issued by her on Tuesday, the former federal lawmaker noted that her name had been used as a board member of the firm without her permission, describing the act as fraudulent. Diamond Bank had earlier on Tuesday published a list of companies and the names of their board members, whom the bank described as ‘major delinquent debtors’, in which Dabiri-Erewa’s name was listed as a board member of Thriller Endeavours, one of the defaulting companies. Also featured as board members of the debtor firm are Lukman Erogbogbo, Tunde Ogunleye, Bayo Kazeem, Dixon Afolabi, Oye Solebo and Mukund Gerrud. tion of relevant security agencies, the bank in question, and the Central Bank of Nigeria. “I once again state categorically that the company (Thriller Endeavours) is not known to me. As a vey contented person, I owe nobody any money, not even myself,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
Buhari seeks Senate approval for N14.7bn loan for Edo resident Muhammadu Buhari yesterday sought the approval of the senate through a letter to the upper chambers of the National Assembly for a $75million (N14.7billion) loan from the World Bank for the development policy operation, DPO of Edo State. The letter, read at the plenary by the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, stated that the loan was the second tranche of a sum of $225 million already approved by the bank. Buhari reminded the senators in the letter that the N14. 7billion was from N44.1billion ($225million) World Bank loan granted Edo State government in three tranches of $75million per annum, and which was first approved by the 7th Senate in 2012. The state government had in line with how the credit facility is structured, collected N14.7 billion ( $75million) in 2012 as first tranche offer and now seeking for release of anotherN14.7billion as second tranche offer. In the letter titled: “Request for Approval to Obtain $75million USD credit Facilities from

he Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State has petitioned the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Jos, over the documents produced and certified for its candidate, Senator Gyang Pwajok, who is challenging the election of Governor Simon Lalong, saying they were not signed by any staff of the electoral body. Counsel to Senator Pwajok, Robert Clarke (SAN), told the Tribunal that the documents certified for the party by the Independent National Electoral Commission to prosecute the petition before the Tribunal were fake. Clarke said, “What we discovered is that all the bundles of documents brought to us by INEC that were duly certified were all fake. He told the Tribunal that the CTCs were aimed at truncating their case, wondering why the CTCs were stamped but no signature on them. The Counsel argued that he did not want to believe that it was deliberate, saying that if they were not being lucky, they could have tendered the documents and would have been thrown away.
There is no excuse for Buhari to fail – Onaiyekan By Sylvester Ugwuanyi
T
he Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. John Onaiyekan yesterday evening declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has no excuse to fail Nigerians owing to the solid experience he has in governance. Addressing newsmen after a thanksgiving mass organised to mark his 46th priestly anniversary, at the Catholic Pro Cathedral, Our Lady Queen of Nigeria, Abuja, Onaiyekan noted that leaders in Africa and Nigeria had been around for a while, hence should have clear directions on how to develop their countries. According to him, “Many of the present leaders have been there for the past 50 years. Take Buhari, for example, he was president more than 30 years ago. “The people in government now are not young people. So there’s no excuse, we should be moving forward.” Noting that Nigeria’s challenges were as a result of failure to align objectives with workable plans, the Archbishop said, “By now we should have learnt better what works well and what doesn’t, unfortunately we keep making the same mistake”. He said the global political terrain had also developed tremendously, adding that many Africa countries today had democratic governments against some predictions.

The chairman further advised the amnesty programme coordinator to adopt a proactive approach in dealing with issues affecting the region and asked the youths to promote peace and unity. He said: “We also call on ex-militants and their leaders
to give maximum cooperation to Boroh in his new assignment to make the Niger Delta, particularly the Ijaw nation, a peaceful and prosperous place to stay. “When peace is achieved, the situation would help create investment opportunities for a better future.” Abarowei said that while many participants of the amnesty programme may
Taxation policy not affecting Enugu free health programme – Commissioner By Emmanuel Uzodinma
T
he Enugu State Government says its free maternal and child health care has continued to play significant role in safeguarding the lives of her citizens. This is also as it has commenced moves to give financial incentives to medical doctors that agree to work and reside in rural areas. Commissioner of Health in the State, Dr Sam Ngwu, who disclosed this to reporters shortly after his meeting with stakeholders in the health sector, held at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, said the taxation policy was not in any way inhibiting access to the free health care for pregnant women and children under 5 years. Ngwu maintained that all the government needed was a way identifying that any intended beneficiary was actually residing in the State. He emphasized that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had since relaunched the programme, which was started by former Governor Sullivan Chime, stressing that “efforts were also
on top gear to improve and upgrade the capacities of district hospitals in the state to make them meet up with the health needs of the people”. On incentives for doctors, he said it would encourage them to reside and work in rural areas, adding that it would be difficult for doctors who are not residing in rural areas to concentrate in their duties. He added that the financial incentive, if implemented, would enable rural dwellers to have acess to affordable healthcare. The commissioner further stated that accessible healthcare system was part of the agenda of the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwu, saying that it was the intention of the governor to ensure that everybody especially the poor has access to healthcare. He, however, admitted that the inability of doctors to go to the areas of their postings in the rural areas was a big limitation to healthcare delivery in rural areas, assuring that the issue would be addressed soon. On the activities of partners of the state ministry of health
especially Donor Agencies, Ngwu said though some of the agencies were winding up some of their activities, the government would continue to sustain the activities. The commissioner assured
have several reasons to doubt its sincerity due to reported abnormalities in the past, the group was confident that Boroh would turn around the fortunes of the programme. According to him, “Going by his thoroughbred background in criminology, security, peace building and conflict resolution, we are convinced that the youths of the region now have the best opportunity to excel under Boroh as coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme. In the same vain, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), through its spokesman, Mr Eric Omare, has commended President Mohammadu Buhari, for appointing Boroh as the new Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme. The apex Ijaw youth body noted that the emergence of Boroh as Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme was an indication that the APC led-administration was sensitive to the plight of the Niger Delta region. The IYC urged Boroh to take steps in ensuring that the outstanding tuition fees and allowances of beneficiaries of the amnesty programme, especially those studying abroad were paid to enable them complete their studies. that the state government would continue to improve the health sector, adding that Governor Ugwuanyi’s compassion for accessible healthcare for the poor was unprecedented. Ngwu averred that the meeting he had with the stakeholders afforded him opportunity to interact with them with a view to knowing their programmes and challenges.
Federal government ready for Ebola resurgence – CDC P rof. Abdusalam Nasidi, National Coordinator, Centre for Disease Control, on Tuesday said Nigeria had taken adequate measures to contain the resurgence of Ebola Virus Disease in the country. Nasidi disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. According to him, the measures are in response to the recent resurgence of the disease in neighbouring Liberia which had earlier been certified Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation. Nasidi said screening had been intensified at strategic entries in the country, with the establishment of a rapid respond team and an emergency response centre, at the federal level. He said, “There are automatic temperature scanning cameras mounted at strategic places which take one’s temperature and other
parameters. “If it indicates a high temperature, such an individual would be apprehended and taken into isolation immediately. “With this level of preparedness, I don’t think that the diseases can take us by surprise anymore.” Nasidi further said that CDC, had been working with various scientists from Germany, Guinea and other counties to discover other possible causes and the prevention of Ebola. He said the CDC had organised training for medical personnel and volunteers, adding that some of the programmes were still ongoing in various states in the country. He said during the outbreak of Ebola in Liberia in 2014, 211 Nigerian experts were sent to that country and Sierra-Leone, as part of African support to Ebola in West Africa.

Women group plans nude protest in Delta over spate of kidnapping By Valentine Franco
A
community-based women age-grade, the Echidime Women Cooperative Society, Ogwashi-Uku, in Delta State have threatened to embark on a public protest with open breast to demand the unconditional release of a Nonagenarian grandmother kidnapped recently in the community. Chairperson of the group, Mrs. Katherine Okwumbu who spoke with DAILY POST correspondent Tuesdayin Ogwashi-Uku, said that the recent kidnapping of 90 year-old Madam Helen Ojeogwu was a sacrilegious and against womanhood. She disclosed that the women of the community can no longer keep mute in the face of rising wave of kidnapping and cultism that have put the community in the spotlight over the past four months. Okwumbu said: “As mothers, we can no longer wait helplessly in the face of failure by our community leaders and security agencies alike to save our community from this rave of criminality that have made our Ogwashi Obodo Ukwu a laughing stock. “Since they cannot bail us out of this situation, we are determined to take the bull by the horn. It is a sacrilege that an old woman of ninety years of age could be forcefully abducted from her home by gunmen. “We are giving our community leaders and security agents four market days ultimatum to secure the release of our mother, Madam Helen Ojeogwu, else, we will go bare-breasted in protest. Okwumbu, a retired primary school teacher said the protest would be climaxed with a traditional cursing session, where the half-naked women would gather at the Ihu Ani Ogwashi, the ancestral square of the founding father of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom. She said that the kidnapping of Madam Ojeogwu was a crime gone too far, stressing that the failure of the community and security agencies to arrest the ugly trend of kidnapping and cultism in Ogwashi-Uku was regrettable. According to her, Ogwashi-Uku have been in the news for the wrong reasons over the past four months, and there have been no concrete effort to curtail the cases of kidnapping and secret cult killings. Okwumbu said: “If you can recall over ten persons have been killed in the past three months over secret cult crises that almost set the community on fire. How long will we continue to keep silence? “Also, we have lost count of the number of persons that have been kidnapped in the community over the past three months as well. We say enough is enough, the world must hear the cry of mothers now.” It would be recalled that Madam Helen Ojeogwu was kidnapped at her Azungwu quarters, Ogwashi-Uku by gunmen numbering six, who stormed the family house and took her away on July 27, 2015. Although the State Police Command has maintained that efforts were on top gear to rescue the grandmother, many people in the community are however doubtful of the commitment of the police in addressing the security challenges facing the community. Command spokesperson, DSP Celestina Kalu told newsmen last Monday in Asaba that the police in the state were working round the clock to rescue the old woman and apprehend the culprits.

Help us to track down criminals – Governor Ugwuanyi tells tricycle riders By Emmanuel Uzodinma
G
overnor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has urged tricycle riders and other road transport unions in the state to assist the government in its efforts to fight crime by using their business to reveal any useful information that would enable it to track down criminals. The governor made the request while receiving delegations of the Enugu State Association of Tricycle Riders Transport Union, popularly known as Keke Napep and the State Executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at the Government House, Enugu. The two unions were on separate visits to the governor to pledge their support and congratulate him on his emergence as governor and as well inform him of the challenges they are facing in the state which border on administration and the untoward acts by “a group of restive youths under the aegis of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria”. Gov. Ugwuanyi, who thanked the unions for their continuous support and the peaceful manner they have conducted themselves in their dispute with the transport group, assured them of his admin-

We will no longer tolerate illegal mining activities – Buhari By Elizabeth Okpo
P
resident Muhammadu Buhari has warned that the Federal Government will no longer tolerate illegal mining and other improper activities that have inhibited the growth of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. The President issued this warning in Abuja yesterday after receiving a briefing from top officials of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development led by the Permanent Secretary, Baba Umar Farouk. Stressing that the mines and steel sector was very important for the diversification of the economy, Buhari expressed displeasure at the Permanent Secretary’s report that the sector had been overrun by illegal miners. “This is one of the most demoralizing briefs I have received. The biggest threat to this country besides the Boko Haram is unemployment and the mining sector is key to employment creation. “We cannot be held back on such a strategic industry that can give us much needed jobs and promote economic growth. “There must be more seriousness in running this country and we are determined to instill that seriousness,’’ Buhari stated, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and
Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu. Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary told the President that Nigeria’s mining sector has been infiltrated by “illegal aliens” who carry out unlawful mining activities in the country. The President also directed on Tuesday that the Ministry of Environment should undertake a rigorous study of Lake Chad, with a view to bringing up proposals on how best to reverse the shrinking of the lake, which currently serves as a major source of livelihood for many. He made this known after receiving a briefing on the challenges facing the Ministry of Environment, adding that the security and economic challenges faced by member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission could be substantially ameliorated with an improvement in the economic value of the lake. Buhari further urged the Ministry of Environment to take up the challenge of researching cheaper ways of sourcing energy for cooking apart from firewood. The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Nana Fatima Mede had told President Buhari that the Lake Chad has shrunk considerably from the 1960s, when it covered an area of more than 26,000 square kilometers, to less than one-tenth of that size at present.

ensure a smooth and effective relationship between them and the government, as part of his agenda for participatory democracy. “It is important that I let you know that we have extended our hands of fellowship to the transport union, Keke Napep and Taxi drivers to meet and agree on who will be the SA on Transport to the Governor, to open a channel of communication between you and the government. “Enugu is one of the safest states in the country. I believe you will use your business to further enhance the security of this state by revealing any information that will be useful to the government in this regard”, the governor said. Earlier in their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Tricycle Riders, Comrade Ikah Benjamin Ejiofor and his counterpart in the Road Transport Union, Chief Joseph Ugwu praised the governor for his leadership qualities and appealed to him to prevail on Vehicle Inspection Officers (V.I.O), other government agencies and the transport group, RTEAN, to stop the incessant harassment and illegal levies aimed at exploiting of the commercial road users in the state.
“There is no way you can allow criminal gangs or cult groups to overwhelm the state. It has never happened in the history of any law enforcement agency and I think it will not happen in the Nigeria of our time. “Do not allow these cultists to take over the state for obvious reasons. Socio-economic development cannot take place in any society if the society is not safe and secure.”
Niger-Delta youths threaten to close NLNG over location of yard in Badagry By Sylvester Ugwuanyi
A
youth group in the Niger Delta, Bonny Youths Federation, BYF, has threatened to shut the operations of the multi-billion dollars Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, over the company’s plan to site the Drydock yard in Badagry, Lagos State. This was as youth coalition under the aegis of Niger Delta Youths Leaders, NDYL, vowed to stage protests in the entire operational communities of NLNG over the plan to site such project outside the region. The youth leaders, in a joint press conference in Port Harcourt recently noted that a letter of protest has been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, the Speakers of House of Representatives and Rivers House of Assembly. On his part, leader of Bonny Youths Federation, Simeon Wilcox accused NLNG of insincerity and refusal to categorically make an official statement about the location of the N1.6 billion dollar Drydock project outside the company’s area of operations in Rivers State and Niger Delta region. He declared that youths in the region cannot be wallowing in abject poverty in the midst of plenty caused by unemployment when companies like the NLNG would initiate plans that could deny the needed employment.
US lift of arms embargo, a dividend of President Buhari’s integrity By Emmanuel Uzodinma
T
he Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has described the lifting of arms embargo on Nigeria as a major diplomatic breakthrough. Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the CNPP Publicity Secretary, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday, said: “For us, this is the 1st diplomatic breakthrough of President Buhari’s administration; a harvest and dividend of his uncommon integrity. In other words, Nigeria has been reconnected to the global community. “It will be recalled that the U.S. placed arms embargo against Nigeria based on the Leahy Act, which frowns against allegations of Human Rights breaches against the Nigerian Military. The Leahy Act is a Human Rights law of the US, which prevents the US State Department and the Department of Defence from selling arms and ammunitions to countries whose military are believed to have committed brazen acts of Human Rights violation. “Pundits attributed the resort of our dear former president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, to the under the table and Black Market to procure the needful arms and ammunitions to contain Boko Haram insurgents,
Obama to the blatant refusal of the US government to sell arms to Nigeria because of the Leahy law. “Accordingly, we congratulate Presidents Barack Obama and Muhammadu Buhari for it is our candid view that the Diplomatic Breakthrough - lifting of arms embargo on Nigeria by President Obama, is a direct dividend of the integrity of President Buhari,
an uncommon political capital, upon which Nigerians voted”. CNPP appealed to Nigerians of all cadre, creed and political party, “to candidly join Mr President in laying a solid foundation for a New Nigeria; as this singular act of the US government has put paid to those who insinuated that President Buhari’s U.S trip was a futile exercise and a jamboree”.

Ondo 2016: Likely political gladiators for governorship seat BY ABIODUN BADEJO
F
ollowing ongoing Political scheming in Ondo State to succeed Governor Olusegun Mimiko in the race to Alagbaka Government House in 2016, DAILY POST reporter, ABIODUN BADEJO in this report, reveals likely gladiators and their chances of taking over leadership of the Sunshine State. Although, political parties and their Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are yet to release their guidelines ahead of Ondo State governorship election in 2016, serious minded Ondo politicians who are interested in taking over the seat of power from Governor Olusegun Mimiko have begun their underground work. The pressing and desirous question is however based on the candidate from the various political parties that will be acceptable by the people and which senatorial district should produce the next governor. In the constitution of Nigeria, rotation of governorship seat among different zones has never been stipulated, but since 1999, after Ekiti State was carved out of the old Ondo State, governorship seat has glaringly been on rotational basis among the three senatorial districts. For instance, the late Adebayo Adefarati, who was from the Northern senatorial district emerged the governor of the state in 1999 despite that the seat was contested by late Governor Olusegun Agagu from the South and other candidates from the Central. In 2003, the game changed as the people from the Southern senatorial district clamoured that it was their turn to produce the next governor of the state. This resolve gave late Governor Agagu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the edge to defeat the then incumbent governor, Adefarati. Mimiko, who served as State Secretary to the Government (SSG) under Agagu and later appointed as Minister for Urban Development during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime, in 2007 listened to the cry of his people (Ondo Central). He defected to the Labour Party (LP) to pursue his guber-

He defected to the Labour Party (LP) to pursue his gubernatorial ambition since the ticket was not sure for him in the PDP” natorial ambition since the ticket was not sure for him in the PDP. Mimiko got his mandate after a legal battle in 2009 from Agagu. He picked his deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, who was recently impeached and replaced by Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo from the North.
The rotation’s jinx was broken in 2012 when Mimiko was re-elected for a second term despite that the two major political parties contesting for the seat strategically picked their candidates. It would be recalled that the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) picked Mr.
Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) from the north as its candidate, while PDP decided to retain its slot in the south by picking Chief Olusola Oke. But despite this, their strengths were not enough to defeat Mimiko, as Oke and Akeredolu came second and third respectively. Even though, political parties are yet to openly declare their readiness for the battle ahead of 2016 governorship poll, different groups and politicians have already commenced preparation for the next year’s election. In Ondo North, which will likely produce the next governor, a number of politicians have indicated interest but are yet to declare their interests publicly. One of them is Senator Ajayi Boroffice, who won his second term seat to the senate in 2015 elections. He is from the Akoko South West local government and it was observed by our correspondent. Relatively, former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan is also eyeing the seat. He is equally from Akoko South West local government. He defected from the PDP to APC before the last general election. The former governorship candidate of the defunct ACN, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, is also not backing out of the next year poll. The APC stalwart is from Owo local government. It will be recalled that Akeredolu in a recent interview published by a National daily boasted that he will be the next governor of the state. The National Secretary of Labour Party (LP) Kayode Ajulo may likely contest the seat under LP platform. Ajulo who is known to be one of Mimiko’s confidants is the Board Chairman of Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC). It was learnt that Ajulo was allegedly planted in LP by Mimiko in order for him to still have grip of the party under which he emerged governor in his first and second terms. Ajulo, who is a legal practitioner in Abuja is from Ifira-Akoko and the founder Egalitarian Mission, Africa. Segun Abraham from Ikare-Akoko is another politician that may be taking
a shot in the governorship seat. Abraham is one of APC National leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s allies. He is also a Lagos based business man. Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, a member of PDP from Akoko North East is one of those eyeing the seat. He was a former House of Representatives lawmaker, representing Akoko North East/ West. Former President Goodluck Jonathan State Campaign Coordinator, Tokunbo Modupe is among those who may likely show interest in the Governorship seat. Modupe from Ose local government area. Modupe may be relying on the fact that no indigene of Ose has ever rule the state. Dr. Olu Agunloye, from Akoko North East, may likely contest. He was among the defunct ACN governorship aspirants in 2012. He dumped the party for LP after he was not given the ticket. He also joined PDP in 2014. He teamed up with old PDP group led by Barr. Jimoh Ibrahim to frustrate Mimiko’s return to the PDP. Another person interested in the seat is Alhaji Jamiu Ekungba. He is a leader of APC and a member of the Board of Trustees of the party. He is from Owo local government. Relatively, Niran Sule from Owo local government is also eyeing the seat. He was among the defectors who joined APC from PDP. Akinfehinwa Awodeyi A.K.A Apata, also from Owo local government indigene, has never hidden his interest to rule the state. During the general elections, as he was campaigning for his party candidates, he was also building his political structures ahead of 2016. Mrs. Jumoke Aniwofose, the daughter of the first Civilian Governor of old Ondo State, late Adekunle Ajasin is also interested in the seat. She was the former State Chairman of the defunct ACN before she resigned to contest as governorship aspirant of ACN in 2012. She may be relying on the good name built by her father as a progressive to clinch the ticket of the party and also believing on the legacies of her father to win the governorship election. PTDF tells FG to pressurize oil companies to employ Nigerians
T
he Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, has urged the Federal Government to compel both local and international oil companies (IOC) operating in the country to employ Nigerian oil and gas professionals. Speaking at the Close Out seminar of the Annual Oil and Gas research Grant competition in Abuja, Executive Secretary of the Fund, Mr. Femi Ajayi, lamented the fact that after excelling in their studies and having undergone rigorous and world class training in both local and international institutions, majority of the professionals ended up without jobs.
He said, “The issue is not just competence and capability, there is also the need for political will among the IOCs and the government. We cannot rely on the goodwill of the IOCs when it comes to the issue of employing of our people; they have to be compelled to do it.” He reiterated the need for all stakeholders in the petroleum industry to contribute their quota towards ensuring that indigenous professionals are gainfully engaged and also that the funds and efforts expended in training these professionals are not futile. “When we train all these people, give them the research competence and the experience that they have, there is the issue of getting them gainfully engaged locally.
‘There are certain roles that government should play and the role that the private sector needs to play; everyone needs to play their individual roles, because at the end of the day, if we put so much money to train these people, yet it does not lead to domestication of some of these things that we want domesticated, it means we are just spending money, we are not getting the results,” he noted. Ajayi, however, commended the federal Government for setting up the Nigerian Content Development Management Board, NCDMB, urging the government to empower the agency and others to deliver on the mandate.
Estate Surveyors drag FG, Code of Conduct Bureau to court over assets declaration
T
he registered trustees of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuer (NIESV), has dragged the Federal Government and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) before a Federal High Court in Abuja mode of assets declaration. The legal action instituted, is asking the Federal High Court to restrain the Code of Conduct Bureau from accepting or receiving assets declaration from public
officers without a backup valuation report to challenge the propriety or otherwise of the practice of accepting assets declarations from public officers without a valuation report of experts. In the court action filed on behalf of the body by Ikechi Gerald Nweneka, it was contended that the practice of accepting assets declaration without a report by a registered estate surveyor and

Dangote Cement declares N121.8bn half-year profit
D
angote Cement posted a profit after tax (PAT) of N121.808 billion in the six-month period ended June 30, 2015, indicating a 21.65 per cent increase over the N95. 440billion announced for the same period of 2014. According to the half year result released on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange at the weekend, the cement company achieved a 20.23 per cent growth in profit before tax. Its Profit before Tax grew from N107.070billion to N128.726billion in the period under review. This followed a 15.94 per cent rise in revenue, with the company realizing N242.215billion revenue as against N208.909billion in the first half of 2014. Dangote Cement grew its revenue to N114.7bn from N103bn in the first quarter of 2015 on the back of its expansion programme, which saw it commence operations in some African countries. Its net profit for the quarter also rose by 44.1 per cent to N68.6billion from N47.62billon in the first quarter of 2014. Speaking on the results, Chief Executive Officer, Dangote Cement, Onne van der Weijde, said “Our new plants have made excellent starts across Africa in the first half of 2015 and our operations now stretch from Senegal across to Ethiopia and down to South Africa, making us a truly Pan-African leader in cement. “Our strategy has been to enter markets with higher-quality cement produced at lower-cost factories and as a result we are building strong shares in key African markets, despite well-established competition.”

Buhari’s December deadline on Boko Haram in the eyes of optimists, pessimists By Sylvester Ugwuanyi
T
he December 2015 timeline apparently set by President Muhammadu Buhari last weekend for the end of the reign of Boko Haram terrorist group has expectedly elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some, with the benefit of hindsight, are so pessimistic that they cannot fathom why the President “is venturing into murky water that looks good to dirty his face with mud after the deadline is crossed”, those on the upbeat side, believe that from the President’s efforts so far and “with the information at his disposal which we are not privy to,” the terror gang may even become history before the December 2015 deadline. To be sure, President Buhari said last Saturday in Cotonou, Benin Republic during a gala lunch held in his honour by President Boni Yayi that “I assure you that we will defeat Boko Haram by the end of this year”. The Nigerian leader stated this in response to his host’s pledge of contributing 800 troops to the Multi-Nation Joint Task Force, MNJTF, which would be launched this week to wage an all-out-assault on the insurgents. The apparent sprint behind Buhari’s optimism Perhaps, the remotest inkling that reveals what is giving more bounce to the President’s steps in his bid to end insurgency by the end of the year is the promise that drew out his response. He spoke immediately after the Beninese President pledged to contribute 800 soldiers to the MNJTF fighting Boko Haram insurgents who have unleashed terror on Nigeria’s North-East and neighbouring countries. As such, it appears that Buhari is squarely placing his hopes on the MNJTF to be able to defeat the Boko Haram Sect. This line of argument is made more plausible by the fact that this was the first time he categorically set a timeline of when the insurgents would be routed. Another indication of the President’s overt confidence on the MNJTF as the arsenal with which to defeat Boko Haram is in his visits to Nigeria’s neighbours where he held high-level talks with their presidents on how to effectively tackle the insurgency. It is on record, that barely a week after his inauguration, Buhari was in Chad from there to Niger. But for the Ramadan fast, he would have been in Cameroon in that one stretch. These and other trips, according to the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has enabled the President to get the “firm assurances from ECOWAS heads of states, he has gotten assurances from G-7, and his recent trip to the US President Obama also gave us assurances that the US is ready to help us to fight Boko Haram using the instrumentality of
Buhari the Lake Chad Basin Commission which comprises Niger, Chad and Cameroun. And it is furtherance of this that the President embarked on his recent trip to Cameroun and one can see that it was a huge success. For the first time, all our neighbours have now agreed to come together and fight Boko Haram”. It would be recalled that while the President was in South Africa for an AU summit, he ordered the immediate release of $21million out of the $100 million pledged by the immediate past government to the MNJTF. Part of the derivatives from the cross-border outreach is the fact that Nigerian soldiers do not need the approval of local authorities to pursue insurgents beyond the nation’s borders into any of Chad, Benin, Niger or Cameroonian soil. This would go a long way in averting a repeat of August 2014 incident when Nigerian soldiers in pursuit of terrorists who escaped into Cameroon were held by the country’s officials for illegally operating in their country. While the role these would play in capitulating Boko Haram is in the positive, pundits argue that the timeline given by the President on a cessation to Boko Haram activities by December cannot just be on the basis of the cooperation being pledged by neighbouring countries, nor the re-energizing of the MNJTF. They hold that this is rather “an icing on the cake”- a sheer complementary effort that would cater to whatever lapses on the part of Nigerian troops. To those in this school of thought, President Muhammadu Buhari has paid much attention on the Nigerian military
to “warrant him declare without any iota of doubt that Boko Haram will no longer exist by the end of this year”. Those who believe this readily point to the alacrity with which he relocated the military command structure from Abuja to Maiduguri in Borno State, which is the hotbed of terrorism. President Buhari made this announcement on the very day he was sworn in to office.
“While the role
these would play in capitulating Boko Haram is in the positive, pundits argue that the timeline given by the President on a cessation to Boko Haram activities by December cannot just be on the basis of the cooperation being pledged by neighbouring countries, nor the re-energizing of the MNJTF”
Another is the President’s frequent identification of terrorism in the North-East as a major focus of his administration and then the caliber of officers he appointed as Service Chiefs to replace those who came on board under former President, Goodluck Jonathan. One of them, Major-General Tukur Buratai told his men last month that under his command, Boko Haram would either beg for peace or face the wrath of highly motivated and combat ready soldiers. He stated this while renaming the operational code of the counter insurgency efforts from “Operation Zaman Lafiya” to “Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole” – which in Hausa means ‘the quest for peace is a must’. Buratai, who hails from Borno State, also told his soldiers that “as Chief of Army Staff, I will be actively involved in this ‘Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole’ to end the madness of Boko Haram if I will have your collective maximum support and cooperation”. Similarly, Nigeria’s Chief of Air Staff, CAS, Air Vice Marshal, Sadiq Abubakar disclosed last week in Kaduna that his administration has begun an assessment of strategies and trainings so far adopted by his men in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency. He assured that this would make sure that the terrorists “will soon be defeated”. Efforts of the new service chiefs appear to be paying off with the news that filtered in some days ago that soldiers of the 21 Brigade in conjunction with elements of 151 Task Force Battalion of 7 Division, Nigerian Army, have captured a commander of the Boko Haram and freed 178 captives held by the group in Borno State. “The troops successfully cleared terrorists’ camp in Fadan, Shuwarin, Wulari, Ngoro Dauye, Jidori, Alikashiri, Kalzamari-Shuwa and Kalzamari-Kanuri amongst others,” said Colonel Tukur Gusau, an Army spokesman. But are these enough reasons for President Buhari to affirm that Boko Haram will be defeated before this year runs out? Cautious optimists and naysayers have at this point disagreed. What feeds pessimists’ dismissal of Buhari’s deadline on Boko Haram? While there are some Nigerians who are cautiously optimistic about Boko Haram being defeated as promised by President Buhari, there are others who insist that the claim should be taken with a pinch of salt. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, represents the later bunch as they recently alleged that
The last line
P
utting all these into perspective, not a few Nigerians would consider it a miracle if the President keeps his word on this. This is notwithstanding the fact that more effort is apparently being made by the present government to route the insurgents. This much was captioned by the President Paul Biya of Cameroon, who was quoted by a presidential official as saying in Buhari’s last visit to his country that former president Goodluck Jonathan did not do much to tackle Boko Haram. The source noted that, “The major complaint, according to Biya, is that Jonathan never or seldom, at best, picked his calls. He said most times he called Jonathan neither picked nor returned his calls. And as a result, the integration of efforts that should have stopped Boko
Haram’s foray and unchallenged run was lacking.” Biya, who was also quoted as warning, that a solo fight against the terrorist group could not have been effective, stressed that, “This solo handling of the problem did not enable the neighbours put in much to solve the problem until it got this bad”. In the final analysis, the greatest counter yet to President’s deadline on Boko Haram came from the spokesman of his party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who said last Monday that: “The president (Muhammadu Buhari) is a seasoned retired Military General and he understands that you don’t just make statements that you will win a war in one or two months. A war veteran like him will not give a date on when a war will end”
Shekau
Buhari has failed to fulfill his campaign promises on which he rode to power, including his promise “to end Boko Haram within two months”. Others who believe the President would not be able to live up to the December deadline readily cited the deadly attack staged by Boko Haram insurgents on his Chief of Army Staff, Major-Gen. Tukur Buratai’s community – Buratai in Borno State. The insurgents’ assault left two people dead, with several homes including Buratai’s family home destroyed in the terrorist’s attempt to seize the town. This attack came two days after the army chief vowed to make the insurgents’ beg for mercy. This brings to mind the case of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, whose hometown – Vimtim in Adamawa State was in October last year captured by Boko Haram insurgents after he had vowed to root out the insurgents. Still talking about Badeh, what he said last Thursday during his valedictory ceremony from the Nigerian Armed Forces, is one that buoys the pessimism of those who wonder how President Buhari will rely on the same military complained about to defeat Boko Haram by December. Badeh revealed at the event that the activities of saboteurs within the military led to the unnecessary deaths of many soldiers and officers who unknowingly walked into ambushes laid by Boko Haram who had prior knowledge of troops’ movement. According to him, “The activities of fifth columnists in the military and other security agencies who leaked operational plans and other sensitive military information to the terrorist, combined to make the fight against the insurgents particularly difficult. “The activities of these unpatriotic members of the military not only blunted the effectiveness of the fight, but also led to the needless deaths of numerous officers and men who unwittingly fell into ambushes prepared by terrorists who had advance warnings of the approach of such troops.” The former Chief of Defense Staff, who noted that his task of coordinating the war against the insurgents as the “most complex and challenging assignment” of his 38-year-long career, said he was saddled with the task of leading a military which lacked the “relevant equipment and motivation to fight an enemy that was invisible and embedded with the local populace”.

Audu’s ambition is an insult on the sensibilities of Kogi People – Senator Kadiri Senator Alex Kadiri is no doubt a household name in Kogi State and one of the top political leaders in the state. In this interview with DAILY POST’s Timothy Enietan-Matthews, the former University Don ex-rays the cause of the stunted growth of the state, heaping the blame on the quack leadership, as exemplified, according to him, by the leadership style of former Governors, Abubakar Audu, Ibrahim Idris and the current Governor, Idris Wada.
T
he governorship elections are coming in Kogi State and like you said earlier, your heart beats each time you enter the state; what is really happening? There is nothing happening in the state; we are only saddled with quack governance, bad governance put in place by us because nobody can tell me that Governor Idris Wada imposed himself on us. He stood in an election with other people but we closed our eyes when the time came for us to make the decision. It has always been whoever brings money is the best candidate. You have been in the struggle for a better Kogi State for a longtime; what is the motivation for your courage to still want to go ahead? If you are conversant with the history of Kogi State, I was a prominent member of the Kogi State Movement for which Ahmadu Ali was chairman. I was the Assistant National Secretary; I was assisting T.W.E. Bako, the elder brother of Bishop Bako. He was the secretary only by title because I was doing all the work. If you come to my study, all the papers we used in preparing the memo we gave to the National Assembly in 1981 are there. Ahmadu Ali does not even have them but I do. My vision for this state since 1980 has not changed but nothing positive has been done for me to clap my hands for anybody aside the Kogi State University in Ayangba. We thank Audu for it of course, but he merely used the infrastructure already put on ground by the World Bank. Kogi State University is standing on the site of the World Bank Agricultural Project, where they had an airstrip. All the houses the lecturers are living were built with the loans collected from the World Bank. The state is still paying back and it is part of the debt every government must pay. The loan may not be fully liquidated in the next eight to nine years. We do things as if we are mad, if not, where is the land in Lokoja to put a university? The Federal University in Lokoja could have been taken to Kabba and upgrade the College of Agriculture. It is good to have a university in our capital but where is the land? The land they could have used is where Obajana Cement Factory is located. So why not take the university to where it would be more desirable. Talking about the present government, you said he did not impose himself, he was elected; did you foresee this present inactivity? I saw and said it and I am been crucified for it till today but God has been kind to me as I do not do contracts both at the state, Federal and local level. This is why I get away with whatever I say. I have nothing against Wada as a person; in fact, I had a relationship with his father. Even when
Wada’s house got burnt in Life camp here in Abuja, he and the First Lady moved in here with me and stayed for over eight months. That did not still colour my views about him. I said what needed to be said at that time but nobody will listen. They said I was not stable upstairs, they said I was envious. It is rather unfortunate that everything I said when Wada came to office has come to pass; a state will need to be governed by somebody who has no questionable character and health, that is how it happens in other parts of the world. Wada and the First Lady who lived in this house with me have not deemed it fit to visit since he became governor, but I have lost nothing. Your party, the All Progressive Congress, APC, has a large array of aspirants; is there no way the aspirants can come together to form a formidable front to present somebody that is clearly electable for the election? Well, in the developed world, your suggestions would have worked, but in Kogi, it will not work. Anywhere you have a large gathering of citizens like in Kogi, it is very difficult to have this kind of situation to work out. In 2010 and 2011, there were fourteen aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and later, we increased the number to seventeen and they made me their Chairman and we were having meetings almost every two weeks. We kept talking until Wada was selected by Ibro as his candidate and since we could not settle for anybody, it became a fait accompli. Once you have ten million naira in your account, which is the amount for the forms and the fact that people greet you and come to eat in your house, you now believe you are popular and believe you can be governor. What is your vision for the state? My vision is this and I wish you have been following my history since 2002 when I was in the Senate; I called a meeting of major stakeholders in Ayangba on how to bring peace to Kogi. I saw the dangers that Okun and Igbira people are now seeing today in 2015 and I said to my kinsmen, Igala people can no longer keep hanging on to power as we are not the only people in the state and for us to have peace with our neighbours, we must ensure that everybody participates in the political system. At that time, Abubakar Audu was governor and he had about sixteen commissioners and twelve were Igala. Most of the Permanent Secretaries were Igalas. No Okun or Igbira person has ever been appointed the Account General, Chief of Staff, Permanent Secretary, Government House or Commissioner for Works of the state since 1991 till date. What obtains in the state
Kadiri is that some offices have been reserved for Igala people because they believe that they are the most important ministries. Why can’t somebody from Egbe, Isanlu or Iyamoye be the Accountant General of Kogi State? These are the issues the meeting dwelled on. At the primaries of 2003, the Igala people used that meeting against me, saying I was too soft but if people had listened to me then, all these drums of war that people are beating would be unnecessary and if we had continued talking from 2002 to 2004, then the problem of power shift should not have been an issue at all. I still believe that the Okuns, Igbira and the Igalas must sit down at a round table and decide how the power should be shifted because it must be done either quietly or by force, which I am trying to avoid. I am frightened with the way things are because the leaders of the Okuns and Igbira have declared that anybody that works with or for an Igala in the coming election would be treated as a traitor. I honestly believe that this is not good for the state, as one charlatan from Igala land who will hand onto this words and start making trouble. I still believe in what I believed in 2002 in 2015 and I want to be the vehicle for actualizing that objective. I also believe that any ruler in the world who wants to be remembered does not need to be in power for eight years. I do not intend to be governor of Kogi beyond four years, I want to bring understanding between the Okun, Igala and Igbira people which I think I can do in two years. The state is seen as very blessed with so many natural resources and so much potential in tourism but nothing has been done about this; what can be done to tackle this? Do you know why Ogun State is where it is today? The wealthy people of the State do go back to the state and create opportunities that get people gainfully employed but in Kogi, that is not the case as nobody is challenging them to do such. We have people at the helm of affairs in several blue chip companies but they are not doing anything as regards creating employment opportunities in the state. One major problem one finds annoying among youths in Lokoja the state capital is the culture of going around politicians without any visible thing doing? How can this be tackled? Again, bad governance and I will keep calling names as they
“The other man, Ibrahim Idris, I forgave
him for all his sins but again, we made it possible for him to be there. Whatever he did in government, you cannot blame him as he was not technically qualified to be governor of any state” have nothing they can do to me as I cannot die twice. You cannot enter Abubakar Audu’s sitting room wearing shoes, his commissioner sits on the carpet; only him is allowed to seat on the chair. When the youngsters comes to his house, he comes out throwing bundles of 500 naira notes and they start fighting, leaving the place with broken heads. The other man, Ibrahim Idris, I forgave him for all his sins but again, we made it possible for him to be there. Whatever he did in government, you cannot blame him as he was not technically qualified to be governor of any state. He brought a lot of wrong things to his government. This included using money to get worshippers, giving contracts to the wrong set of people, money sharing and thuggery became a culture during his time. Wada tried to stop it but had to follow suite as people told him, he would not come back. How will a governor go to his village to spend the weekend and he will place somebody at his gate to be sharing money to people and these young people, because of the level of unemployment, will gladly queue up to collect 500 naira. This is why we are saying that Kogi should try and pay those who have gone through the Universities and Polytechnics some stipends. The money used for cocktails and unnecessary travels should be cut off. It should be noted that until we are able to get this youngsters gainfully employed, we are not just sitting on a time bomb, we are inside it. You said something about the EFCC not doing anything about the looting in Kogi State; is it that the people involved are too big or what?
The people involved are not too big but we have a very weak system in this country. The EFCC, ICPC and the Police are all very weak, compromised and ineffective. That is the tragedy of the country and adding to that, the judiciary is also weak. I am aware that some cases have been in court for the last ten years without any headway. A country with weak and compromised judiciary can never develop. If you put a saint as the head of EFCC, that person will be compromised. Look at Ribadu, from the office of head of EFCC, he ran for president and last time for governor. Where did he get the funds he is using? Obasanjo used him to disgrace some individuals. We know a good number of these people are corrupt but there are better ways of dealing with them In what ways? If I know Mrs X is corrupt, I do not need to handcuff him on Television but I can establish a special court to try him. That way, the trial will be fast and fair and it will instill fear into those who intend to steal. Note that those who have stolen will never go to prison as they have the means to block such. We need to reform our laws and get those who are competent to be in charge and you will see changes. The APC primary election is fast approaching; what are your chances? Only God knows, like I always do, I am never shy from a fight; if it was in other climes, people will say, sit down, we will give you this ticket but such things do not happen here. I believe if you are looking for an honest person to govern the state, somebody everybody believes is competent with a history of holding several public offices and has not been found wanting in any of them, then I am. What Kogi needs is the man on the white horse, who could change the inequality that exists in the state and as such, I do not need to bribe my way through. Some people believe that former Governor Audu Abubakar, who is the leader of the party in the state, is still eyeing the office of governor, making many to wonder why he is not giving others room to contribute their quota to the development of the state. What do you think about this? When you mentioned Audu, I choked, not because I hate him, I like him for a few things and he too, no matter what he thinks about me, he may like me for a few things too. Of course, he must know that I am honest, upright and fearless; he must at least admit those things about me. How can a person be the leader of a party in the state and still be an aspirant? Secondly, this man has been governor of Kogi on two different occasions and all the problems we have been talking about all day can be attributed to him in person. So why are we shy? It is his attitude that has been the problem of the state; so we should treat him with a long pole. Also, he is a member of the board of trustees of the APC which is the highest organ of the party, higher than the National Executive Committee. How can you come down from there and contest for a place in your state? I believe it an insult on the collective psyche of the people of Kogi State that a man who has been governor twice wants to be governor again in a state that has a population of about 2.3 million people.

APC leaders must not impose governorship candidate on us – says Ajasin’s daughter Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose, is the daughter of the first Civilian Governor of Old Ondo State, late Chief Adekunle Ajasin and also the former State Chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). She will be contesting the governorship election in 2016. In this interview with ABIODUN BADEJO, she warned leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the danger ahead if there is imposition of candidate. Excerpts:
H
ow will you access the present APC leadership in your State? Well, I personally think that we have able and capable chairman who is directing the affairs of the party in the state and like the old adage will say, “nobody is perfect” people can have their own opinion and I think he is trying his best for the party. So many people from PDP under his leadership have joined the party. So I want to commend him on that; for having been able to attract some bigwigs from the PDP to join the APC. Personally, I think the leadership of APC in the state is trying its best. The Publicity Secretary, Adesanya is doing his best too in making sure that he reacts appropriately. I think with the support of the other members of the executives at the state level , the sky will be the limit for APC when the time for gubernatorial comes up. Why do you want to join the governorship race? I don’t want to talk too much on my ambition, but I will come out because I know that with Buhari as the President, my party will perform to satisfy the needs of Nigerians and that will help me to win the heart of the Ondo State citizens and I will win both the primary and the gubernatorial election. I want my party at the centre to stabilize very well , and if the party at the centre is doing very well, it will brighten the chances of APC in Ondo State. Do you think you have the financial strength to contest the ticket of your party with your male counterpart? Well, that was the story they put forward when I tried to contest under ACN in 2012. Did Buhari pay for his nomination form to contest the Presidential election? Did he have money? So, I have so many well wishers who believe very much in me, and are ready to support me and if we are still talking about money at this age when Buhari became President without money, I think we should all go and check our heads because money shouldn’t be used in getting people with integrity, getting people who will do the work well, getting people who will make sure that government is run properly and not government of my family, for my family and by my family. So if people want government of my family, for my family and for my
family, let them run after money, but if they want government of the people by the people and for the people, then I am the right person to be voted in. Being a woman too, looking at, Angela Merkel of Germany, she is doing so well, German economy is the best in the world today and she is a woman and I want to say if people are thinking of voting anybody for governor, it is the woman in their middle that they should think about and vote for because women we can do 100 things at the same time and we will bring you men up, because without many of you, we will be juvenile delinquent on the streets of Lagos and Abuja, but here we are, we are in charge of the family and without us, the family will be no where and the family is the basis of the society. So if I am the only woman coming out, I see no reason why all the men that are coming out should not give me the necessary support and I see no reason, why the leadership of the party should not support me because I have supported them, I have been with them and I have not jumped ship, so I think if the time comes, it is a pay back for me. In the last governorship election, your party failed to conduct primary, is there be a primary in this coming election? You know, even the presidential election of APC, there was primary. We were all there from evening till the next day, and we had about five aspirants, they all came out for the primary and the party accepted the primary election method. So I see no reason why the primary should be jettisoned in Ondo State during the gubernatorial election. I think that will satisfy all contestants instead of just imposing or bringing somebody from nowhere to be the candidate of the party. I am in support of a primary election. What do you think may likely be the implication if the party fails to conduct primary? I pray we do not fail to conduct primary because it will boomerang. It will boomerang in the sense that party members could get discouraged over imposition. So, I am praying that the leadership of my party will not go the way of imposition. Let us give everybody level playing
ground, let us put ourselves to primary elections, let us see how we can mobilise the delegates to be on our sides. The delegates are the representatives of the people and they will know who should be their candidate. So whoever wins, will be the preferred candidate. It will not be the preferred candidate of the leaders. If imposition is used again, it will boomerang and we could have the same results like we had under ACN. Since 1999, your party having lost power in the state has been finding it difficult to return to power, what do you think is the cause, and why has your party been failing? Well, I will use President Buhari as an example. It took him four consecutive times before he could win an election to become the President of Nigeria. He tried it one, two, three and it was at the fourth occasion when he was even trying to give up but as faith will have it, he succeeded. Even, if we have been losing elections in Ondo State, we too could be lucky to come back to power in Ondo State like PMB who tried four times and succeeded in the fourth time. We have been trying and many of us have stayed put in the party, hoping upon hope, so with that kind of situation, I think we will get there one day. You will see that we have five legislators in the state Assembly. That is a plus. Before, we didn’t have any, and two are still hanging, maybe we will become seven at the end of the day because of the two outstanding results, even though, they were illegally sworn-in by the Speaker, there are two outstanding candidates . I won’t say
“You know,
even the presidential election of APC, there was primary. We were all there from evening till the next day, and we had about five aspirants, they all came out for the primary and the party accepted the primary election method”
Anifowose
the people of Ondo State do not like the progressives, we all live in Nigeria and we know what the economy says. They have seen it with the banning of Okada riders, with the payment of Kaadi Igbe-Ayo, even the National Identity and Management Commission (NIMC) does not charge people but here in Ondo State we are being charged. Somebody who does not have N100 to feed in a day is been asked to pay N2000, when we have all kinds of IDs all over the place; National ID, Drivers ID, International passport and so on and so forth. You are bringing another one just to oppress the people. This is what we call over taxation. What other things can your party do in order to win Ondo State? Well, I think we should start educating our people on what the progressives stands for and what the people stand to gain by voting for us. They should compare and contrast what is happening in our states with the kind of money coming into the state. Can you compare the development in Ondo with the development in Osun. Osun State at the last quarters is the last on the revenue allocation. I think Ondo State was six or seven. Can you compare the development in Osogbo with the kind of development we have in Ondo State. Osogbo looks more beautiful than Akure. So, my party will have to do the the comparison of programmes and projects that are going on in all APC states. We have to do a lot of campaigns. We must not wait until too two or three months to election before we start going about, telling people that the election will be coming up and that our candidate that emerges from the primary must be voted for. We must explain our manifesto to them, discuss on the radio, discuss on Adaba FM, Breeze Fm and luckily we are in charge now and we can discuss on Radio Nigeria. We have enough media presence to be able to impact on the people about what they stand to gain by voting for us in Ondo State. We have everything working for us to tell the people where we stand with them. We just have to be more pro-active in Ondo State in order to gain
the confidence of the people. Not just the people, the leaders in the different communities. What about the division among leaders in your party, don’t you think this will work against your party on the election day? I am hearing that there are factions for the first time. I know we have gubernatorial aspirants having their followers, which is normal. So if they are talking about groups and caucuses, I don’t want to take it to mean faction or division. Faction is different from group or caucus. You and Governor Mimiko served under late Adebayo Adefarati’s administration. How will you describe the governor? We were colleagues in the cabinet but I can say sincerely that if we spoke at all, may be, we spoke four times. Throughout my tenure, we were not just close. We didn’t have any kind of close relationship. People have been criticizing Buhari on the few appointment made so far. Some are of the view that he has so far favoured the north. One thing is that our people do not understand the geography of Nigeria, we have six geopolitical zones and when you see a northern name, you will think may be that northern name is from Katsina, Maiduguri, or from Sokoto. The name usually connotes that one is partial and if at the end of the day, you put down such names, they may not be from the same geo-political zones or even from the same states. I think we had Kingsley Kuku from Ondo state here as coordinator of the Amnesty and now that Kuku has been replaced by somebody from the South South, I think the President is fair. You can see that Femi Adesina is the spokesperson to Buhari, and that is a big position that has come to the South West. When you are talking of Femi Adesina, nobody knows if he is from Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Lagos or Ogun states. You know names usually bring this idea that somebody is biased towards a particular area, except if he is able to identify their states and geopolitical zones. For now, I don’t think he has done any wrong by the appointment he has made so far.

Court remands 51-year-old father of 4 for defiling 13-year-old housemaid
A
Delta State Magistrate court in Uvwie, presided over by Blessing Ideh, on Monday, ordered one Francis Onyeji, 51, to be remanded in prison custody for defiling a 13-year-old housemaid at Effurun area in Warri. The 51-year-old Onyeji, a father of four and staff member of an indigenous oil services company in Warri, was accused of defiling the 13-yearold housemaid recently. The suspect’s wife, on discovering what transpired between her husband and the housemaid, inflicted bodily injuries on the 13-year-old. Onyeji was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on unlawful carnal knowledge and defilement of the teenager. In her ruling, Ideh said: “The hearing of this case is being adjourned till August 25 and the police officer is commanded to convey the defendant to the prison and deliver him over to the superintendent thereof, together with the warrant.” While testifying in court, the police prosecution, Sergeant Enikido Akele, said the accused absconded when the matter was reported by the victim at the Ekpan Police station on July 1, adding that he was apprehended on July 28. The prosecutor told the court that the victim was a JSS two student of Ekpan Basic Secondary School in Uvwie Local Government Area of the State. Akele said the victim, while been interrogation over the injuries on her body, insisted that the accused committed the crime. “The accused resides in Oghoyoma Onomokpome Street behind Chinkelly Schools and has been on the run when he heard that the police were on his trail,” Akele told the court. According to the prosecutor, the offence was punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code Cap C21, Vol. 1, Laws of Delta State. When the charge was read, he pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate consequently ordered he be remanded in Okere prison in Warri till August 25. The13-year-old had earlier told newsmen before the arraignment that Onyeji started forcing her into sleeping with him since 2013, adding that he usually gives her money while warning her never to tell his wife or anyone or he would sent her back to the village.

Traders protest over relocation of market in Nasarawa
B
usiness activities in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, was on Monday brought to a standstill as irate traders from the Lafia Central Market, in a protest, expressed their displeasure over plans by the state government to relocate them to a newly built market in the town. It was gathered that police officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were on ground to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the cause of the protest. Spokesman for the protesters, Mr. Usman Shitu, while speaking to newsmen, said their action was as a result of
the way the state government had handled the allocation of the new market. Shitu claimed that the shops in the new market have been allocated to politicians, who in turn give them out at exorbitant prices. He said: “The rent on those shops at the new market, as charged by those politicians, was so exorbitant that an average trader cannot afford to pay, considering the low patronage of goods and services being experienced in the state.” He alleged that the state government allocated the shops in the newly built market to politicians at the rate of N50,000 per shop, but they are
now giving them out at a rate of N100,000 per shop to them. Reacting to the allegation by the protesters, Special Assistant to Governor Tanko Al-Makura on Media and Publicity, Mr. Tukur Ahmed, noted that the government was transparent in the allocation of the shops to the traders, adding that the aim of was to decongest the overcrowded market in other to forestall any emergency. The governor’s spokesman stated that the traders have been given three months ultimatum to relocate to the new market, but alleged that the traders gave the government some conditions to meet.

The boys were identified as Goodluck Benson, Omoruyi Isaiah and Ediomwan Desmond. A mild drama however played out when one of the suspects, who were arraigned at a magistrate court in the state on a four- count charge of stealing and belonging
to an unlawful society called Blade, told Chief Magistrate Esohe Bazuaye that he was 17 and not 19 as written by the police on the charge sheet. This infuriated the magistrate who asked why they were not taken to a juvenile court instead of been brought to a regular court. The boys told the magistrate that they were from poor homes and were not arrested at the crime scene, adding that they confessed to the crime because the mob threatened to kill them. Magistrate Bazuaye however appealed to the Pastor in charge of the church, Rev. Johnson Nwatamuojor, to forgive the boys and collaborate with the court to rehabilitate them. Bazuaye told Rev. Johnson
that if the suspects were sent to remand home, they would become criminals. She said: “Has God not given you the assignment to win souls? We can turn the lives of these kids around by making them become something better in the future. “No child is too difficult to be placed on the right path. As a man of God, the church can pay for their upkeep. Their present situation is not their fault. It is the parents. “Don’t give up on them. You have lots of sheep. These are part of the weak ones.” Reacting to the incident, Rev. Johnson noted that he was happy that the suspects were apprehended and he could not stop the police from doing their job. The suspects were later sent to the juvenile court.

The children - Christiana, Feranmi and Pelumi, had begged their mother to take them with her, when she was leaving at about 10 p.m on the said day, but she refused promising the children that she would be back by 11.30 p.m. A woman, who claimed to have been with the children’s mother before she left them, said 6–yearold Pelumi begged his mother not
to lock them inside the shop. Their mother was said to have bought them biscuits and juice to calm them, and then left. On her return however, she did not meet them alive. The children’s mangled bodies were reportedly discovered close to the door with the eldest’s hand on the door handle apparently trying to open the door. Her husband was said to have given her two shops. She used one for sales of provisions and salon operation, while the other served as bedroom. Report had it that she usually locked the children up in the shop any time she had to go out. According to the report, the woman, who is now on the run, was first married to a man, but divorced him after having four children for him. The estranged husband was said to have taken two of the children, leaving Christiana and Feranmi in their mother’s custody. She eventually got
married to her present husband who resides in Ejigbo area, whom she has two children for. A neighbour, one Mr. Gbadamosi Lawal, disclosed that her husband was devastated when he visited on the day of the incident. He said he was too shocked to speak to anyone, disclosing that everyone thought she went to his house. He added: “On that day, she went with the youngest child, who is about three years old. Everybody is angry with her. In fact, I do not think she will come anywhere near here because she may be lynched.” Gbadamosi went further to say residents revealed she had gone to her present lover’s place. Her present lover said he did not want any man’s child in his house, which was why any time she went visiting him, she locked the children in the shop. However, the Lagos State Police Command as we learnt seems to be silent on the cause of the fire incident.

C
ontroversial Nollywood actor, Kunle Adegbite, has been accused by Adediwura Gold, his colleague in the industry, for allegedly grabbing a lady’s breasts during a function in the United states. DAILY POST recalls that few weeks ago, Wura was said to have had a cold war with her colleague, Biodun, where she accused Biodun of calling her a lesbian. On a live TV, Kunle, standing up against Wura, defended Biodun, saying she is his friend and he is sure she didn’t call Wura a lesbian. Barely 3 weeks after Kunle said this, he was yesterday contacted by organizers of Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria to
corroborate the breast-grabbing allegation by the same Wura. He said: “Please I do not want to have anything to do with the issue between Biodun and Wura. I thought it was a forgotten issue. I sort of defended Biodun few weeks back because I know her and I know what she is capable of saying. “I don’t want my name to be mentioned where Wura is being mentioned. “Wura is just a nuisance and only trying to get attention or name for herself. We are not mates in the industry or anywhere else. I will not stand to trade words with her. “I am a responsible person. When I visit the US or any other country, I face what took me there. He voiced his conviction thus: “If we put him in rehab and he finds something doing after he is confirmed fit, Majek will be well 100 per cent okay I can assure you.
Abuja, the emerging Las Vegas of Nigeria
N
ightlife in Abuja has undoubtedly taken a new dimension. It’s not only on steady move to the apogee; it’s already becoming more attractive and popular than obtains in Lagos. Prior to now, Abuja was never known for social activities. It was usually like a ghost town on Fridays and weekends. Many have however blamed inactivity of the capital city to security perception and constant harassment of young girls who are often mistaken for sex workers. However, there seems to be a drastic change to the trend following the growing awareness among residents that nightlife is not meant for the gagas but responsible people who may need to ease off the stress of the day. Today, celebrities have realized that just like Lagos, Abuja is very important to their careers. With their constant visit to the capital city, it’s gradually becoming another Las Vegas. A recent tour of the capital city has revealed that celebrities have found a high profile luxurious club, The Bank as their most favourite hangout. The Bank club has as at now, become a showbiz club where celebrities of different status visit. Investigation has revealed that the Club is like a therapy to
many music stars, movie artistes and comedians. This may not be unconnected with the traffic the club currently enjoys. At different occasions, the likes of Nigeria’s most popular and celebrated entertainment peers-of-the-realm, 2Face, Psquare, Iyanya, Davido, Olamide, Don Jazzy, Basket Mouth and Wizkid, have visited and gotten the best in socializing and expanding their grid. As at the last count, Dbanj, M.I, Femi Kuti, Wand Coal, Reekado Banks, Phyno, Lil Kesh, Olu Maintain, Uti, Patoranking , I Go Dye had visited the club, and have testified to the traffic they enjoyed. The constant visit of celebrities to the club plays dual roles. While through The Bank, they build on their networks, the club benefits more as through celebrity presence, they enjoy unimaginable traffic. Celebrity patron of nightlife has equally created better awareness on the need to make nightlife a necessary activity. Today, socialites and Abuja big boys have found the Bank a place to be on weekends and other days, gradually turning the alleged ghost city to another Las Vegas.

Barcelona players vote Iniesta as new captain A
ndres Iniesta will succeed Xavi Hernandez Barcelona captain, the has confirmed.
Van Gaal will be a happy man if he gets Bale - Robson
as club
Lionel Messi is second in line for the 2015/2016 season, while Sergio Busquets is number three. The appointments were made after all the players voted in a secret ballot and Barcelona has officially announced the results, which need to be approved by Luis Enrique and his coaching staff. Iniesta, who is now the longest-serving player at Camp Nou, told Mundo Deportivo last week: “Above all it is a very special responsibility to represent not only the team but much more: the kit, the club image. “Becoming the first team captain is something very special, especially for people who have spent so much time at the club. “In the same way that all people are different, I don’t think there is an exact model of a captain. Everyone is different and communicate things in their own way.”
B
ryan Robson has said that Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal, should replace Angel Di Maria with Gareth Bale. Di Maria is very close to joining Paris Saint-Germain, after spending just one season at Old Trafford and Bale’s name has come up as one of his possible replacements. Real Madrid boss, Rafa Benitez, has already said the Welshman is not sale. But it has not stopped Robson from speaking about the winger’s qualities. “Bringing Bale in would be a really good signing if it was to happen,” the former United captain said at the launch of ESPN’s Greatest Sporting Cities research. “The good thing with Bale, and this is what the manager likes, is he can play in two different positions - he can play wide coming in and also as a centre-forward. “It will be really difficult but if the manager can add him to the squad I think he will be a happy man.”
No problems with Abramovich – Mourinho
J
ose Mourinho has insisted that his issues with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich are in the past. The Portuguese tactician won the league in his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge, before he was sacked under acrimonious circumstances in 2007. Mourinho is back with the Blues after spells at Inter Milan and Real Madrid and has opened up on his relationship with the Russian billionaire. “In my first period, my personal relationship (with Abramovich) was very good (but) professionally, we had some interferences and a bit of a disagreement with some ideas,” he told Sky Sports News. “In this moment, we don’t have this problem. When I left Real Madrid to come here, Mr Abramovich asked me to fight for titles. “In my first season, we were almost there, in my second season we did it and in my third season if you are close, you can always do it.” Ahead of the new season which kicks off this weekend, Mourinho says Chelsea can retain
the title, becoming the first team to do so since Manchester United in 2009. “The top five are the top five, and why not a club like Tottenham to get in there?” he added. “But in the end, history plays a part and investment plays a part. “Chelsea (were) four times champion in the last decade. Arsenal is a fantastic club with great players. Liverpool has amazing investment. “Man City is a squad to love and a club with two Premier Leagues in the last four or five years. And Man United with everything -- the history, the players, the investment. “So everybody will be there.”

Oliseh confirms meeting with Victor Moses
S
uper Eagles handler, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed that he met with Victor Moses and hinted that the Chelsea forward will be invited for subsequent matches. Moses has not played for the national team since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he reportedly fell out with then coach, Stephen Keshi. Oliseh is expected to name his squad later this month, ahead of September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania. “Very constructive meeting with Chelsea & Super Eagles’ Victor Moses,” Oliseh tweeted. “The team building continues.” The Eagles boss was also at Wembley for the Community Shield between Arsenal and Chelsea. Moses only played as a second-half substitute, while Mikel Obi remained on the bench for the entire duration of the game.
Robbers attack Giwa FC in Enugu
P
layers of Giwa FC were attacked by armed robbers at 9th Mile in Enugu, as they travelled to play a Nigeria Premier League Week 21 match against Abia Warriors. One of the team’s officials, Sammy Adesoji, confirmed the incident and said the thieves took away mobile phones and cash. “Our players were attacked by armed robbers at 9th mile. We thank God no life was lost,” he said. “They were ahead of us; they continued the journey with escort given to them by soldiers on the road after they explained what happened to them.” It is the second time this season that an NPFL club will be attacked by hoodlums, following an incident that involved champions Kano Pillars.

anchester United have served us two mediocre seasons. Life has not been the same at Old Trafford, since Sir Alex Ferguson ended his 26-year reign with their 20th Premier League title in 2013. David Moyes was a brief, unforgettable chapter in the history of the Red Devils. In came Louis van Gaal last year. With his philosophy. You see, a lot of people think Van Gaal is the Dutch version of Moyes. Only that he comes up with confusing jargons that somehow makes us think he knows what he is doing. The season did not start very well. United picked up five points from his first five games, as he tweaked his formations time and again. Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sergio Romero are all excellent signings. But it is not just enough to splash big money. It takes a fine manager to blend all their skill sets to make a great team. And that is the task
Van Gaal faces. United have undeniable depth in midfield, but they still look a bit short upfront and at the back. Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have not been replaced. It appears Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez and James Wilson will be Wayne Rooney’s back up next season. Perhaps Memphis Depay can help out too. Phil Jones has been suspect in pre-season and Daley Blind might find himself playing centre-back more regularly. David de Gea looked as if his spirit is in Madrid already last week against Paris Saint-Germain. The task of dethroning Chelsea will be a difficult one, but United have spent heavily these last two summers to bring him top quality players that can do the job. Van Gaal has revealed his preferred ammunition ahead of the big kick-off. “More or less 4-3-3,” he told the club’s official website. “We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use. “We played in our shape [on
tour] and played how we have to play. That’s also where I have been very satisfied.” That’s a good start. He used 4-2-3-1 system during their four pre-season games and had unsuccessful trials with 3-5-2, a 4-4-2 diamond and 4-3-1-2 last season. So this clarity is welcomed. Tottenham Hotspur visit this weekend as the Premier League returns and former United striker, Lou Macari, has a clear warning. “United were found wanting against top-class opposition,” he said referring to their pre-season games. “Tottenham, who United open the season against, are not PSG, and the team will be at home in front of a massive crowd. They’d expect to win.” They are not only expected to win against Spurs on Saturday before an expectant home crowd. They are expected to win enough to finish on top of the league after 38 matches. Van Gaal must deliver United’s 21st title in May 2016. Anything else is a failure.
Mosley wants rematches with Mayweather, Pacquiao
4
3-year-old Shane Mosley has insisted that he is still in great shape and wants to take on Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao again. The American with a record of 47-9-1KO39, will fight again for the first time in two years on August 29, when he takes on former foe, Ricardo Mayorga. But Mosley is already looking ahead to bouts against Mayweather and Pacquiao, who he lost to on points to in 2010 and 2011 respectively. “My mindset is to beat all the guys that beat me. Obviously I can’t beat Vernon Forrest. God bless the dead. There is Mayweather, there is Pacquiao and there is Winky (Wright) if he wants to come back and fight. There is Saul Alvarez Canelo and Miguel Cotto. They are all out there to fight,” Mosley told BoxingScene.com. “I healed for two years and I feel great. People say I’m old but Bernard Hopkins is 50 and he’s getting ready to fight. When I was 38, 39 I was considered old but Mayweather is 38 and Pacquiao is 38 or 37 and they aren’t considered old. “Why do I get the old man’s title when I proba-
bly
look the youngest out of all of them? If people don’t know me sometimes I still get carded. People think I look 25 or 26. “I love rematches. I want rematches with Cotto. If he wants the rematch let’s do it. If Oscar De La Hoya wants the rematch let’s do it. Right now there aren’t any injuries - the Achilles, the groin. I am good. “Let’s do the rematches.”
Zero tolerance for hooliganism – Pinnick
P
resident of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has vowed to sanction any stadium where hooliganism is reported. The second half of the Nigeria Professional Football League resumed on Sunday and Pinnick has called on stakeholders to continue with peaceful conduct of games as it happened in the previous rounds. “We have made it very clear, through our channels and through the LMC channels, that there will be zero tolerance for hooliganism in our stadia,” the NFF boss said. “The first stanza has been applauded by all stakeholders from far and near, and it is contingent upon us all to consolidate on gains in the areas of credible officiating, people-friendly stadia and flawless administration of games. “The NFF will continue to work assiduously with the League Management Company to ensure that we continue to improve on all aspects of the League. The League is the foundation of the Nigeria game and we will be deceiving ourselves if we think it does not matter.”
