Chairman’s Bulletin
Dear Members, Welcome to the Spring Issue of your City Tatts Magazine. Hopefully, the warmer weather might entice you into the city and to our Club. HELPING OUR FARMERS IN NEED As widely reported over the past weeks, Australia’s farming communities have been doing it tough under the heavy physical, mental and financial toll brought about by the severe inland drought across the country. Led by ClubsNSW, the NSW Club industry has responded to this crisis in force and I am proud to say our Club is no exception. To provide immediate impact, CTC has pledged $50,000 to drought relief and over the next short while, we will be rolling out a series of activities to support and enhance our contributions. For further information, or if you would like to get involved, please contact our Head of Corporate Communications, Richard Shute, via email

on rshute@citytatts.com.au. Thank you in anticipation of your support. LOWER BAR OPENING I hope that by now, many of you will have taken the opportunity to enjoy the reopened Lower Bar. It was nice to see so many of you and your guests at the opening events and I was delighted to hear the wonderful feedback. With spring now here, I encourage you to come in and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere and surroundings – and to perhaps even book your next function there. It is important to note that this impressive renovation would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of our staff and leadership team over the past year and I congratulate them on their achievement of this great transformation. MAMBO SATURDAYS On the topic of the Lower Bar, from Saturday 1st September, we launched a brand new event in the room called
Mambo Saturdays. This fortnightly event is enlivening the room with Latin sounds and dancing and it is party time twice a month! We have collaborated extensively with security experts and the City of Sydney Police to ensure the events are memorable for all the right reasons and that the party – and the Lower Bar become the talk of the town. ESPERANTO CLOSING Thank you for all your support and feedback as we said goodbye to the Esperanto Dining Room over the past few months. We are still deciding on what the future holds for this special space, but will keep you posted on any developments. RACE DAY/SPRING CARNIVAL Spring is always a great season in the Club’s calendar, with horseracing such a proud part of our history. This October, as is tradition, the Club will be hosting the City Tattersalls Club Cup Day once again at Royal Randwick Racecourse with

this year’s Boonoona Open: This year had 71 starters across all ages and in both the Classical and Freestyle crosscountry skiing disciplines. The weather was good and, even with a little tech malfunction, the races pretty-well started on time. Most if not all the racers came to Boonoona for the prizes and to applaud the winners and placegetters for the various events. Matt and Luanne put on a great event of food and drinks for the appreciative crowd and the event finished around the seven o’clock mark – just in time for dinner for the Boonoona guests that night. The Boonoona Open is the second event in a challenging week of cross-country skiing for NSW and other states’ competitors. Camille Melvey representing CTC was again well-placed in finishing 2nd in the Women’s Open Classical.

Raising the (Lower) Bar At City Tatts, we wholeheartedly believe that a good bar starts with great architecture.
With this firmly in mind throughout the distance race, the extensive project to restore and renovate the great structure of our ground floor's Lower Bar galloped over the finish line last month, looking as good as new and better than ever before. With 34 years having passed since the bar’s last renovation, our team set about providing a much-needed elevation to address the operational inefficiencies, and to reposition this quiet and intimate space as a world-class venue with live music. With the trusted eye of Cox Architects overseeing the design, the team set about reinterpreting the heritage aspects of the space to make the open bar as inviting as possible.

After a brief six-week closure over winter as the construction crew finished the final stages of the six-month long fit-out, Lower Bar reopened its doors softly on Monday 9th July, ahead of a week of events at the end of the month for Members, guests and the Club’s key supporters. Our Lower Bar is a new CBD location, positioned to offer Sydney an amazing array of craft beers, whiskeys, rums, gins, vodkas and cocktails matched with an incredible range of charcuterie boards, including some of Australia’s finest cheeses, olives, seafood and cold meats. The gorgeous space is steeped in history and has been a popular haunt since opening for the first time on Tuesday 25th November 1924. Now, at the ripe old age
So what are the must-try dishes on the Lower Bar Menu? Members shouldn’t go past the new cheese board, which is composed of a rich and creamy Binnorie Dairy Brie, the mature multi-award winning Maffra Cloth-Aged Cheddar and the Tarago River Gippsland Blue, a smooth flavoured and well-structured rinded cheese. The charcuterie board is also a winner, composed of lean and tender wagyu bresaola, prosciutto and a choice of truffle or fennel salami. Jongsup also highly recommends the roasted spiced cauliflower, which as far as tasting and side dishes go, is right up there! Head into Lower Bar Monday - Friday: 10:00am - Late Saturday: 4:00pm - Late.
of 94 and with a square floor size which mimics this figure, this Sydney institution also features a whopping 5 metre floorto-ceiling clearance and provides both locals and visitors from afar with an aweinspiring backdrop against which they can enjoy a quiet ale or bold whiskey. Today, it is virtually impossible to walk through this room and not feel the warmth of history within these four walls. From the likes of legendary trainer George Daldry, Abe ‘Mr Sin’ Saffron and tennis legend John Newcombe, there has never been a shortage of great names who have trodden the marble floor. “Along with the décor itself, there is a lot of the existing furniture from back in the day, we have the great horse which provides a quirky element, but it’s a mix of throwbacks with new and exciting concepts throughout, fitting for new crowds and old,” says Lower Bar Manager Jason Green.
winning rums, gins, and bourbons,” adds Jason. Lower Bar has also introduced a tasty new food menu to accompany the new whiskeys and rums. “The menu is inspired slightly from our dining room, but primarily we wanted something that was modern. We’ve taken the Sydney Rock Oysters from Esperanto, which were a favourite of Members. And then all the ingredients are sourced locally within Australia and we hoped to emphasise this in our selections. The exception for this is Prosciutto di Dan Daniele, which is from Italy,” says Jongsup Won, City Tatts Head Chef.

WHERE TRADITION REIGNS SUPREME
The Lower Bar menu has also received a stirring new facelift, evident in the illuminated wall of delights from across the globe; a crucial new element to the design of Lower Bar to showcase what our bartenders do best. “The wine menu, you won’t find these in other bars in Sydney! It’s not only unique to Sydney but also to Lower Bar, so they are different to the other City Tatts eateries and bars. We work with Paramount Wines who source worldwide, providing a great diversity for our customers. We also have a main feature wall combined with a selection of award-

Steeped in history: The City Tattersalls Club Cup Day looked somewhat different in 1933.
SPRING INTO ACTION IN SYDNEY! This year’s Everest Carnival encompasses six weeks of world-class racing in Sydney throughout spring, commencing on September 8th and galloping straight through to October 13th at Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens. Out of the gate with Run To The Rose Day at Rosehill Gardens, the Carnival will build towards its feature event - the $13 million Everest. The world’s richest race on turf, this is not one for the fainthearted.
Over the six-week Carnival, 29 Stakes races will be contested, including six Group 1’s. Other feature events during the spring racing program include Royal Randwick’s Melbourne Cup race meeting on Tuesday November 6th and, of course, the hotly-anticipated City Tattersalls Club Cup Day on Saturday 20th October. WHAT’S HAPPENING OFF THE TRACK? Off the track during the day, racegoers will be entertained with DJs and live

music, fashion activations and the Harrolds Fashion Chute competition, popup bars and other special entertainment. WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS FOR FOOD AND DRINK? There are loads of options to keep you wined and dined all day, from the Leger Lawn featuring a host of famous food trucks (think Chur Burger, Cantina Movil and the Shuck Truck) and unique pop-up bars by Pimms, Domain Chandon, Schweppes, Heineken 3 and Canadian Club to premium offerings in the Chairman’s Club and Grandview Restaurant. WHAT ABOUT GROUPS? Groups are looked after through ATC’s group tickets, which reward discounts for groups of 10 or more. If you want to really elevate your day, there are also a number of hospitality options available for groups, including private spaces for 10 to
25 guests and all-inclusive cocktail style functions with menus designed by the ATC’s award-winning chef in collaboration with some of Australia’s leading chefs and restaurants. AND THE BIG RACE … THE EVEREST? Redzel won the inaugural Everest in 2017, trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy. Purchased from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January 2014 for $120,000, Redzel was syndicated by Triple Crown Syndications to 17 owners including a policeman, a teacher, a taxi driver and a few retirees all with their own unique story as to why and how they got involved with racing and this particular horse. As of last month, nine of the twelve slot holders have confirmed their runners including the defending champion Redzel. Can the defending champ do it again?

Giving back ON TUESDAY 21ST AUGUST, WE WERE HONOURED TO HOST THE 2018 CLUBGRANTS PRESENTATION IN THE GADIGAL ROOM, WITH OVER 39 CHARITIES IN ATTENDANCE.
Captive audience: The presentation is always eye-opening
As the Master of Ceremonies, Chairman Patrick Campion led proceedings as the committee - consisting of representatives from City Tatts, City of Sydney RSL and Club York - donated $394,060 across 52 organisations to assist with the amazing programs that are run throughout our community. Of this, City Tattersalls Club was proud to distribute $245,408 alone.
14
CITY TATTS MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018
Since ClubsNSW introduced ClubGRANTS, Registered Clubs have given more than $1 billion to recipients from community groups, charities and sporting teams located across NSW. City Tatts is one of approximately 500 Clubs to voluntarily assign funds to the ClubGRANTS scheme each and every year. ClubGRANTS is without doubt one
of the principal and most effective grants programs existing in Australia today. As always, the presentation was a wonderful event, so here are some of the highlights, in the words of the people representing those out there on the front line:
LOU’S PLACE “Lou’s services the homeless and vulnerable women in crisis, based in Kings Cross. We are absolutely blown away, I’m speechless. So, thank you very, very much. What we put in for was a grant to work with women in out-of-home care, many of the women sadly are separated from their children and we feel there is a really big gap for supporting women and helping them get better contact with their children. That’s what we are harbouring, and this funding will enable that to happen.” MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION "I’m so overwhelmed to be here today. What an absolutely amazing audience to be amongst. We are incredibly honoured. Thank you so much. Make-A-Wish grant wishes for children with critical illnesses. We currently have 467 children, with 27 in Sydney. These funds will go towards granting the amazing wishes of the children between the ages of four and 17, could be for a puppy, could be to go to the moon. But it gives them the strength to hope for their journey ahead.” WOOLLOOMOOLOO POLICE COMMUNITY “Our Scholarship Foundation was set up to support the youth of Woolloomooloo, to help with their secondary education, unemployment, mental health, get youth off the street, teenage pregnancy. What we’re trying to show these children is the different paths they can take. This money will go towards their secondary education.” WHEELCHAIR SPORTS NSW “I started off just as a kid with a disability that went along to a roadshow and I started playing wheelchair basketball and I fell in love with it. And I ended up being at three Paralympic games. I’m also on the Board of Wheelchair Sports NSW hoping to give back. We run sport for everyone with a disability but also their family and
CITYTATTS.COM.AU
friends around them, so they can get involved and participate, from little kids all the way to adults. We run Christmas camps for kids, so they can meet other kids with disabilities, and show them the different ways they can live their lives.” ODYSSEY HOUSE NSW “We focus on long-term rehab, and are based in Redfern. This money will go towards our program which is essentially working to find a cure for parents who have drug and alcohol related issues.” ST JOHN AMBULANCE NSW “What a great event to be at, it’s really humbling to be here. At St John we’re passionate about saving lives. Our mission in NSW is to make sure every person in every workplace and home and public gathering is equipped and trained to deliver first aid. So, these funds are going to help to raise that awareness and promote our schools program.” WESLEY COMMUNITY “Lifeline is there not only for suicide prevention, but it’s anyone who is concerned about anything. It could be someone who has relationship issues, or someone lonely, someone with mental illness.” KOOKABURRA KIDS “Our organisation offers respite to children who are living with family members with mental illness. We do this through running camps and providing education programs that are aimed to help behaviour and help to break the cycle of mental illness. 36% of children that live with a family member with mental health issues will become troubled with mental health issues. We are currently an organisation that is growing at a very fast rate which is quite tragic growth when you think about that.”

MAKING THEIR MARK DOWN UNDER City Tattersalls Club is a proud Partner of ClubsNSW in their role as Founding Partner of Invictus Games Sydney 2018 presented by Jaguar Land Rover. Founded by HRH The Duke of Sussex in 2014, the Invictus Games is an international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women, both on active duty and veterans. The Games use the healing power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and celebrate the crucial role played by family members and friends. The word ‘invictus’ is Latin for ‘unconquered’ and embodies the fighting spirit of our wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women. The fourth Invictus Games will be held Down Under from 20-27 October with events being staged across Greater Sydney. It will be thrilling to witness the healing power of sport and support our wounded warriors on home turf. Invictus Games Sydney 2018 CEO Patrick Kidd OBE hopes to see as many Australians there as possible. “The countdown is on to Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and we’re busy preparing to

welcome 500 competitors and over 1,000 of their family members and friends from 18 nations to Sydney,” said Mr Kidd. “This is a moment in time for us to come together as a nation, to be inspired by these incredible stories of resilience and actively demonstrate support for our defence community.” As a proud Partner Club, City Tattersalls is very excited to get into the spirit of the Games and show our support for not only the Australian Team but for all participating nations. We also look forward to the opportunity to recognise and thank the family members and friends of our servicemen and women for the sacrifices they make. Invictus Games Sydney 2018 also provides an opportunity for long-term impact for the defence community.

MARCUS WILSON: JUST KEEP GOING BY RICHARD SHUTE
I meet Marcus on a stunning sunny Thursday outside the onsite motel at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation in Narrabeen, 25km north of the City. Set amongst natural bushland, this state-ofthe-art North Shore facility is the training hub for the Manly Sea Eagles – and for the next two weeks, they will be joined by the 72 members of the Australian team who will be representing their country at the Invictus Games in October. By the side of Narrabeen Lagoon, aside from a cacophony of Indigenous birds, the only sounds that break the serenity are the shouted signals of a helper to one of the team’s assistance dogs on the rugby pitch.
joined the Australian Army in 1988 and was medically discharged in 2002, having served both as a Gunner and a Medic. Accolades during his impressive ADF career include the Nursing Service Cross (NSC) for his efforts in Papua New Guinea and a Bravery Medal (BM) for rescuing five passengers from a crashed helicopter in Kabul, Afghanistan. Now Base Manager for the Flying Doctors in Broken Hill, Marcus’ day job is tough and long, but rewarding: “I love that we live in a country where that can happen. Nobody ever gets a bill for our services. We’re the third largest airline in Australia”, he states proudly.
has travelled across for. He explains how desperately he needed them to happen for him in his rehabilitation journey after damaging his spinal cord, nerves in his back and a myriad of orthopaedic injuries changed his life in 2002: “For about five years, I could hardly walk, but thankfully through rehab and medication we managed to control the nerve pain. I can’t ever stand still, and I can’t sit for too long, I’ve got to keep moving. On some days, it gets so bad that I can’t get out of bed. I don’t really sleep very well, I sort of just fall asleep when I can’t keep my eyes open any more, but it’s not restful” he explains.
A tall man approaches me and, beaming beneath a shaggy grey beard and striking azure eyes, cheerfully introduces himself as Marcus Wilson. Originally from Brisbane, but now based in Broken Hill, the 42-year-old
Marcus arrived at Narrabeen a week earlier to meet up with the other 71 members of the Australian team. With the Games fast approaching the training regime is intensifying – this is the third camp he

service actually meant anything to anyone”, he confides. City Tatts is delighted to have been able to reach out to Marcus and provide practical support – not just for the Games, but as a part of his ongoing rehabilitation, both emotionally and physically. The equipment, which includes cold weather apparel, a chainset and wheelset as well as a bike fitting with a physiotherapist will allow him to really dial down on his training. It allowed him to get an online coach for professional guidance as opposed to just bluffing it. “The equipment will be invaluable – not just for the Games, but for the next event. And that’s what this whole process is about,” he enthuses. “I use a regular bike, but I modify it because of my injuries. The support from City Tatts has allowed me to get it professionally fitted by a physiotherapist. I know I’m in the least aerodynamic and least powerful position, but it is the one which generates the least discomfort. I ride as a category C5, basically I have an extended stem and ride in the upright position. I’m really excited to be working with a professional who understands the biomechanics of my injuries and the sport to help me get into the most efficient position,” he says.

them out for a cruise on the Harbour the following day. His wife is currently studying as an international student in Brisbane. They met five years ago through a mutual friend and she is hoping to join her husband in Broken Hill by the end of the year. “Being able to show my kids is a big thing. Sharing that experience and showing them that even if things seem stacked against you, giving up’s not really the answer - you’ve got to keep pushing through. There’s been times when I wished that the ground would open up and swallow me up, but you’ve just got to put one foot in front of the other and keep going.” Marcus’ piercing eyes, however, are firmly cast towards the future – and post-Games, the outlook is bright, with the affable competitor already looking towards the Masters, the Warrior Games and the next Invictus in the Hague which has just been announced. As he shakes my hand to leave for the afternoon training session, I can’t help but hear the words of William Ernest Henry’s immortal Invictus poem in my mind: “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul”.
GOOD LUCK, AND GO WELL MARCUS. WE’RE BEHIND YOU.
One of the things Marcus is most looking forward to is spending time with his family. His daughter will join him for five days, his son twice that. He actually competes on the first day of the Games, on Sunday 21st October at Farm Cove, and is hoping to take
first thing I went to, and the first thing I realised was that I was hopelessly unfit compared to the other guys. I was just hopeless, I wasn’t even close”, he laughs. After the camp, Marcus wrote a fair dinkum plea to the coach to acknowledge how far off the mark he was, but vowed to pay his way, attend every training camp, wash the uniforms and carry the water bottles – just so long as he could be part of the team. That struck a chord with coach Geoff Stokes and, out of 270 plus applicants, Marcus was fortunate enough to make the cut – and get the opportunity to represent his country in the sailing event as a bowman. Marcus fixes me in his gaze, as if to make sure the strike lands, “The whole thing is that it’s the first time as a veteran that I’ve felt valued. This is the first time in a 30 year career in defence that my

Proud of their city: The Harriers run whatever the weather physician Dr. Summerhayes always present to keep a watchful eye over proceedings – and of course, to make notes on each individualrunner. City Tattersalls Club has always had a strong connection with running as a sport. An early committeeman and later house manager, Ted Lazarus, made his mark as a champion runner, winning the storied Stawell Gift back in the day. However, organised running dates back only to 1959, when gymnasium supervisor George Daldry responded to a request from late Club Secretary Fred Clark to supervise the training of two footballers, Dick Wilson and Ian Walsh, by taking them out jogging in Centennial Park. Following the lead of the Australian and St. George skippers, soon athletes, rowers and other joggers joined in and in 1961, the Harriers were formed. Archie Punch was made President, with another committee man - Joe Taylor - as his number two. The group used to run four mornings a week around Centennial Park, with Club

Over the years, the group has included marathon runners, Olympic rowers and rugby players of both codes looking to gain that extra edge in their fitness. In August 1993, after 34 years of uninterrupted service, George Daldry handed over the leadership of the Sunday runs to John Healy. The City Tattersalls Harriers Running and Walking Group have been meeting at the same spot each Sunday morning for over 60 years – rain, hail or shine. “We have a group to suit everybody – a walking group, also slow, medium and fast running groups. We encourage families and individuals to come along and explore the bi-ways and back streets of the older parts of our city as well as the eastern beaches and harbour foreshores”, explains current group leader Charles Anscombe.
The separate groups always meet up once or twice during the run, enabling individuals to chop and change at these intersections. “We regularly have around 60 people on the run, often more, but do not worry if there is no one in sight at 8am as they all converge just before start time”, explains Charles. Russ Dowsett, a face familiar to many, has been running with the Harriers since 1979. With a cheeky grin creeping across his handsome face, he assures me that he could very easily claim to be the most loyal: "They say ‘Russ, why don’t you ever go on holiday?’ and I say ‘I do, I go on a Sunday afternoon, and get back on a Saturday evening.' Why? Because I want to be here on a Sunday. I don’t miss it. I don’t miss many at all. I can count the days I’ve missed on one hand. I love it.” Although it is ostensibly a running group, the Harriers provide something far more important, he tells me: “We don’t come for the running, that’s the bonus. The exercise is a bonus. It’s the camaraderie and the sledging. We have a go at everyone. No one’s safe.”
Keen walker Norma Mason admits she isn’t as dedicated as Russ. She tells a cracking yarn about how she joined the group 21 years back: “My husband used to come home and he would pick the papers up on the way home and then say ‘You’ve missed the best part of the day!’ And I thought I’ll fix you and next week put my walking shoes on, and I came with him. I went up the corner, I went all over the place. And then I got in the car and thought, 'what have you done to me?' And I’ve never missed really since then.” Proudly sporting a Canteen bandana, Graham Deacon simply loves treading the backlands of the city. He chips in: “Sydney on a Sunday morning is different to Sydney at other times. From where we are, we can go anywhere and everywhere. One of my favourites is going into the city, and around Surry Hills. We go to the beaches at times. Down to Bondi, they’re all good. Something different every week. The other week we did the Harbour Bridge, it was beautiful. That’s a great run, the Harbour Bridge and around Kirribilli Point. Everyone’s invited all the time.”
Together as one: A gem from the archive
Youth can’t be restored, but stamina endurance, general health and improvement in one’s personal appearance can.” – Neil McEwan, CTC Harriers in the March 1966 CTC Magazine.
CTC Director Jim Chen remains a proud Harrier
With sweat cooling on the shoulders, it’s high time to get out of the late-winter windchill, and the group disperses. But the faithful will be back, same time, same place next week, dedicated to running this town. Interested in striding with the Harriers? Join in the fun in Centennial Park every Sunday – they meet at the corner of Oxford Street and York Road, opposite the bus terminal at 8.00am sharp! CITYTATTS.COM.AU

The laidback Sydneysider was raised by his mother and two older siblings in Blacktown. Jason can’t speak highly enough about his family, who he says are “all crazy, and are polar opposites of each other.” He describes his mother as “the strongest person I know,” his brother as “one of the nicest guys you will ever meet,” and his sister as “one of the smartest people I know”. With an attitude like this, it’s no wonder Jason is an incredibly popular figure.
Getting to Know… JASON GREEN Looking dapper and often seen mixing delicious cocktails, Lower Bar Manager Jason is one of the most welcoming faces you’ll meet at City Tatts. As part of the family for two years now, the Sydney local has recently celebrated something very special.
Don’t let the quiet exterior fool you however, the always-friendly Jason is known by team members to be a “sugar and Red Bull fiend.” This kick may just be what helps him with his love for computer games, YouTube and movies, which is how you’ll find him spending his spare time on the weekends (when not in the arms of his loving new wife and cats).
“It was the most expensive, I mean happiest day of my life. I thought smiling for the whole day would kill my face but after seeing my bride, the smile came naturally and could not be wiped off my face, even when my foot got tangled in my wife’s wedding dress during our first dance,” he shares.
Getting to Know… YOU This is the beautiful face of the winner of August’s ‘Win the Ultimate Ski Trip or $5000 Cash’ promotion. Out of the 15 finalists of the competition, long-time City Tatts Member Larissa Von Drasek scooped the grand prize – and she couldn’t be more delighted: “I couldn’t believe it when my number came up and I picked up the ball. I looked at it and he said, 'You’re the winner!' You could have knocked me down, I just couldn’t believe it. I really had no idea, it was just wonderful,” she explains. Larissa has been coming to the Club house since the early 90's and is a regular in Lower Bar and the Women’s Fitness Centre.

Well-known to staff, it was fantastic to see such a welldeserving winner. “I love coming here, I just enjoy the camaraderie of the girls in the gym. I do maybe four to five classes a week; body barre, yoga, Zumba. It makes you feel better. We all have our problems, but it’s lovely when you have a chat to each other, it just makes you feel better,” she says. Larissa, hopes to go on a small holiday of her own in the coming summer and use her winnings towards that: “I’ll go in February for a little trip on the boat, it will be lovely!” she adds.

Experience
Canada Winter has come and gone and while to most of us that may put a smile on our faces, there are those who simply crave the cold comforts of the season gone by. Have no fear though, Canada’s Calgary Alberta - which for eight straight years has been ranked as the fifth most liveable city in the world by Economist Living Intelligence Unit analysts - is home to two of City Tatts' fabulous Reciprocal Clubs. The country’s third largest municipality, Calgary is known to astonish new visitors with its beauty, funky eateries, outdoor adventures and street festival vibes. The work-hard, play-hard approach flows through the city’s veins and beers and al fresco sports are almost universally
adored. This beautiful location was thrust onto the world stage in 1988 as the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympics (the XV Olympic Winter Games), and this was a huge boost to Calgary’s reputation. Known as ‘Everybody’s Games’, the event helped foster a sense of community for the winter city, and hubs from the Games remain popular for visitors even today. With just one stroll down the main strip of the city, it’s not hard to see why the place has been recognised and acclaimed for offering such a high quality of life. The colourful city truly is a winter wonderland, complete with booming economy, strong film and TV, wellness and tourism sectors. It’s a lifestyle no Calgarian is afraid to boast about. Nestled between the beautiful communities of Mount Royal and Elbow Park in the southwest of Calgary since 1931, The Glencoe Club is a great spot for visitors wanting to further explore the winter months while embracing some of their favourite sports. Committed to ‘creating extraordinary experiences for the communities we serve,’ its superior facilities include swimming pools,

The Glencoe Club’s Adults Only watering hole combines their love of sports and classic Canadian food and beers. If you are more eager to explore the north area of Calgary, the Calgary Winter Club offers a great alternative premier sporting and social Club to sightsee while on holiday. Located on the edge of Nose Hill and surrounded by nature, the Club offers convenience in its proximity to the airport. The 280,000 ft2 luxurious Club has all you could ask for providing a healthy balance of recreation, competition and relaxation.
