PRESIDENTS REPORTS
BOARD OF
DIRECTORS
Welcome to our Spring edition of the Burst, it has been great to see so many of our members back in the Club and enjoying the hospitality provided by the staff who are doing a marvellous job under the circumstances of this Covid-19 pandemic. My thanks to the members for assisting the staff by complying with the Club’s Covid-19 safety requirements, it has meant that the Club is able to provide a safe venue for members and their guests to enjoy a social outing. Unfortunately, due to the NSW Governments restrictions the Club has had to cancel or put on hold a few of our popular promotions and entertainment, full details of what is currently on at the Club is available in this edition of the Burst or can be found on the Club’s website. Your Club through the ClubGrants scheme has once again assisted various very worthwhile charities and local junior sporting organisations with cheques totalling $130,000. Homeless Veterans, Calvary Health Care, St George Children with Disabilities, Crateful Group, Hurstville United JRLFC, Kingsgrove Colts JRLFC, St George Dragons JRLFC and of course the Club’s own inhouse sporting groups are a few of the recipients, the full listing appears on page 6.
Alan Barnes OAM PRESIDENT
As mentioned in the last edition of the Burst the Club has lodged a Development Application with Bayside Council to extend the current balcony area to the sandstone wall. We are optimistic that approval will be given for the development for the extension to be built for this summer, providing a larger alfresco dining area for the members with the ambience of the park. It will be an ideal area for families with younger children to relax and dine as the children will be able to play in the park under the watchful eye of their parents.
Heather Shepherd VICE PRESIDENT
Tas Aronis SNR VICE PRESIDENT
With the closing of Jade Palace at the end of July, management have begun the process of tendering and interviewing a list of prospective new caterers. Management has also taken the opportunity to do minor repair work to the kitchen and the area in general, including the installation of many TV’s in the restaurant area. It is anticipated a new Asian dining inspired restaurant will re-open late September, with new caterers and an exciting modern menu. In the meantime, the very popular Rations Café and Dining continues to serve a great selection of main and light meals, including the very popular Chef’s Specials, and member only weeknight specials On behalf of the Board our thanks to the Management and staff for all the extra work they have been doing in ensuring the Club is a certified Covid-19 safe venue, the positive feedback we are getting from the members on the way the Club is operating during this pandemic is very reassuring. I look forward to seeing you at the Club sometime soon. “A person who is content with what they have done will never become famous for what they will do”.

THE BURST
Don’t forget to move your clocks forward an hour on Sunday, 4th October from 2:00am to 3:00am EST.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT We hope this edition of the Burst finds you well and you are all coping with the ever-changing restrictions placed on us all due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The management at your Club have worked closely with the authorities to develop and upgrade our Covid Safety plan to ensure that we, not only comply with the current legislation but also to safeguard our members and employees. We continue with the social distancing measures, registration at reception, hand sanitising and temperature checks. Our Covid marshals are on the floor everyday assisting patrons, and disposable face masks are available for patrons and staff, whilst reusable face masks are available for purchase at Club reception. The Club has placed a restriction on total capacity within the Club so be sure to book when visiting our restaurants to ensure you do not miss out, bookings are limited to a maximum of 10 people and split bookings are not permitted under current Covid-19 restrictions. The Club’s Annual General Meeting was finally held on 28th July 2020 and our thanks to the members who attended and adhered to the social distancing requirements. The Board elections were declared and the Club welcomes new director Matt Ruru to the Board. The annual ClubGRANTS were also affected in 2020 with the Bayside clubs being unable to hold our usual presentation, however Kingsgrove RSL funded over $130,000 to sporting and other organisations. This support on behalf of our members assist the organisations who provide support services and facilities for the aged and disabled members of our community, sponsorship of our own in-house sporting clubs and the many other local sporting Clubs who all have had disrupted seasons due to Covid-19 pandemic.
will work through the process to get this proposal approved and hopefully commence construction before summer. In the ensuing weeks we will be unveiling the new Asian Restaurant to our members, which will offer Asian styled cuisine with your favourites and something new. Regrettably the Covid-19 will prevent the Club from holding many of our usual end of year promotions and events; including the cancellation of our Carols by Candlelight, Senior Citizens Luncheon and the Star's Tribute Cabaret. There are a number of promotions the Club will be holding in the months leading up to Christmas including the return of Trivia on Thursday night, Octoberfest with Bavarian food specials at Rations Dining. Melbourne Cup will have entertainment and sweeps available with a menu from Rations Dining and our ever-popular Ham and Seafood raffles in December and our FREE Santa Photos (bookings required). Check the pages of this Burst for details. Our thanks to all the members for your assistance in adhering to the current rules of the Club as it is imperative that we continue to comply with the regulations.
Your Club also donated funding to the Rural Aid to assist our farmers with the ongoing drought and pledged funding to the Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Service Brigade who worked tirelessly fighting the devastating south coast bush fires in the last summer.
Stay safe and up to date by checking our Club website and following us on social media.
In the last issue of the Burst we reported on the proposed extension to the Alfresco Balcony. We can confirm the Development Application has been lodged with Bayside Council and the Club and our builders
Ian Todd ACCM CEO
I look forward to seeing you in your Club soon.

In additions to the majority of fundraising events being cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic, this year has also seen an extraordinary demand on many charitable services to support our community and those most vulnerable. Because of our loyal membership, Kingsgrove RSL Club has been fortunate enough to re-open our doors after the Club’s closure to continue to provide a safe space and services -albeit limited- for patrons to connect and enjoy; and in turn continue to provide funding to assist local organisations and charities who are in dire need of this support, especially during a crisis.

STEP 1
2 lemons 500g small white potatoes (preferably Jersey Royals) ½ a bunch of fresh tarragon, (15g) 1 bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley, (30g) 8 free-range chicken thighs, bone in, skin on (See TIP) 6 cloves of garlic olive oil 50g unsalted butter 2 tablespoons plain flour 400ml organic chicken stock 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 75g watercress 5 sheets of filo pastry
Preheat the oven to 190ºC. STEP 2 Halve the lemons, quarter the white potatoes/ Jersey Royals, then pick and finely chop the tarragon and parsley. STEP 3 Put the chicken, unpeeled garlic cloves, lemon and potatoes in a large baking tray, drizzle with oil, season with sea salt and black pepper, then toss together. STEP 4 Pop in the oven for 45 minutes, or until golden, crispy and cooked. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. STEP 5 Melt the butter in a large non-stick pan until bubbling. Add the flour and stir for 1 to 2 minutes to form a paste, then slowly pour in the stock, whisking until thickened. Add the mustard, then season. STEP 6 Once the chicken is cool enough to handle, remove and reserve the skin and discard any gristle. Shred the meat, discarding the bones. STEP 7 Squeeze the garlic from its skins back into the roasting tray and squeeze over all the juice from the lemons and toss well. STEP 8 Pour over the thickened stock and add the herbs and watercress. Check the seasoning, then finely chop the chicken skins and sprinkle over the filling. STEP 9 Lay out sheets of filo on a clean surface and cut each one in half. Lightly scrunch up and place on top of the pie filling, brushing with a little oil.
RECIPE TIPS Use 550g shredded roast chicken if you have leftovers from Sunday lunch. Using a pre-cooked chicken will ½ your cooking time.

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENT We are in strange times, unchartered waters as they say, with this Covid-19 virus creating havoc across the country. I trust that you are all managing to lead as normal a life as possible given the restrictive circumstances that the Government has imposed on NSW businesses and residents.
service to the country by having the Sub Branch provide an RSL Service at their funeral.
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we did not hold our normal VP Day Commemoration Service, however your Committee held an abbreviated service at the Club’s memorial on Saturday the 15th at 1.00pm; I gave a VP Day address, wreaths were laid, and the Last Post & Rouse was played with the Ode. We were fortunate to be joined by a few members from Arncliffe RSL Sub-Branch including their President Paul Snell who laid a wreath on their behalf.
We held our first Sub Branch General meeting on Monday the 24th August, as expected there were not as many members as usual. I do know those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with their mates and be updated on what is happening with the NSW RSL and the Sub-Branch. Our next meeting will be on Monday the 26th October followed by our Christmas meeting on the 21st December. We look forward to seeing you there if possible, note we are observing all the social distancing protocols, as per the Clubs Covid-19 safety plan. Once again check the Club website or contact Club reception for the latest information.
We are hopeful that the social distancing restrictions will ease at some stage in the next few months and we can hold our Remembrance Day Service and luncheon on Sunday the 8th November. The service, if it goes ahead will commence at 10.45am, hopefully with the Cadets from TS Sirius and the 233 St George Regional Cadet Unit. Please check the Club website - Sub Branch page or call Club reception for the most current information.
The NSW RSL is continuing its reorganisation with some muchneeded cost cutting, I have been very much involved through the District Presidents Council (DPC) in my position as FSMDC President. We have been reviewing and amending the SOP’s to enable the RSL to start afresh after the Board elections which will take place in October, you will be receiving voting papers next month. The NSW RSL State Congress to be held in Newcastle on the 7/8th December is still going ahead.
Unfortunately, our Sub Branch has lost a few more of our diminishing WW 2 members this year, we pass on our condolences to their family and friends. I would like to thank those Sub-Branch members who gave up their time to attend the funerals, I know it is very much appreciated by the deceased’s family and friends. It was very pleasing to have the Government lift the number of people who could attend funerals, due to the original (10) person limit one of our members was not able to be properly recognized for their
The FSMDC will be holding its first meeting since February in September at Ingleburn RSL, a report of the outcomes will be provided at the next General Meeting in October.
Alan R. Barnes OAM JP Sub Branch President
AUXILIARY Well it is very pleasant to be able to visit the Club and meet up with friends and enjoy a meal or just a coffee. Some of our members met for morning tea the other week to farewell one of our members who is moving to Queensland. Jenny had been our Secretary and also took on the task of packing the Christmas Parcels for some of our members who now reside in retirement homes, also for members of the Sub- Branch in the same situation. Jenny was presented with a gift to remember us by. We will miss you Jenny.

Since our last report we have started back at Darts in July. We have had a few attending our Social Darts on Friday nights and social distancing is being adhered to. We have one scorer and one player at the oche line and everyone else is behind, sitting down. We thank the Club for providing paper towels, disinfectant and sanitiser to us, it is very much appreciated.
We are getting back in the swing (pun intended) of things although the Covid-19 restrictions have prevented us from playing the 19th Hole at most of our events.
Our Club Championships were held on Sunday 26th July 2020 and was attended by sixteen members. We were given a $10.00 voucher each for lunch and morning tea as well. The results were as follows:

It was a long day, but a good day was had by all. We have one team of five in the St. George and Sutherland Darts Association in B Grade this summer. We started in August and all attending are enjoying their competition. If you like playing darts or would like to learn, just come down on a Friday night and see us or contact reception at the Club (9336 1500). You would be more than welcome. We have fun nights once a month where a few surprises can be in store for you. We have Covid-19 safety in mind when playing. Hope to see you soon.

FISHING CLUB Christmas and New Year is fast approaching; hopefully things will be better and those pre-COVID celebrations and get-togethers become the norm. Some fisho’s have luckily been able to get out and about on the water – although not as much as we would have liked. Weather conditions, as well as Covid-19 restrictions, have not been altogether accommodating. Twenty members (including 5 children) were able to go to Shoalhaven Heads and stay in the units. 5 boats (and crew) saw a few fish being caught and weighed in, with points being accumulated to the end of year tally. FishFinder Fishing Charters hosted our Fishing Club members for an outing in Sydney surrounds; everyone abiding by strict Covid-19 regulations. A large number of fish including snapper, flathead and morwongs were caught. Unfortunately, two attendees became seasick, putting a temporary end to their day of fishing. A report, including photos was placed on KRSL’s Fishing Club Facebook page. Mid-August, keen fisho’s (Gavin and Nathan) trolled 100 miles out to sea fishing in 3000 metres of water to catch…… nothing. A repeat exercise is being planned with hopefully better results, once the petrol tanks are re-fuelled and weather conditions improve. Our planned Shoalhaven Heads outing late August was cancelled due to flooding in the area as well as Covid-19 concerns. Hopefully everyone will be able to attend our final Shoalhaven Heads outing in November, with good results and better conditions. Our Committee is hard at work planning for our end of year presentation on Saturday 28th November (commencing at 6:30pm in the Diggers Lounge) which is proving difficult due to the possibility of limited numbers of attendees and running the risk of cancellation last minute. At this stage, we ask that interested participants contact Club President (Jim Fisher) for catering purposes, so we have an idea of numbers. Details will be given closer to the date if any changes are needed to be made. On behalf of the Fishing Club Committee, we would like to thank Ian Todd, Alan Barnes, the Board of Directors and the hardworking KRSL staff for the assistance given to members throughout the year. I would like to wish all Kingsgrove RSL members, a safe, happy and healthy end of year and a COVID-free existence worldwide. See you on the water,

S P O R T S A D M I N I S T R AT O R With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, most of our Sporting Clubs are now starting to get back on track and recommence their competitions. The Darts Club has re-commenced their social Friday night sessions and have also been able to play their Darts championship competition which was played on the Sunday, 26 July. Congratulations to all the winners, you’ll be able to find results from the day within the Darts report on page 28. The Darts inter-club competition has also managed to restart as of the 5 August, Good luck to our Kingsgrove sides. The Fishing Club have managed to have a few outings since Covid-19 restrictions eased, including competitions at Shoalhaven Heads, where they stayed at the Club Shoalhaven Heads units; This has enabled their members to get the points they require so that their Club Champions can be announced later in the year. The Fishing Club has also been able to participate in one of their planned Fishing Charters for this year which is great news.
Snooker Competitions as the space in the Sports Lounge is currently being utilised for the social distancing requirements of the Poker Machines. Hopefully the Snooker Tables will be back as soon as the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. Unfortunately, the Sporting Club Round Robin for 2020, has been cancelled, Covid-19 being declared the winner for this year. Normally the Sporting Club Champions trophies are presented at the Stars Tribute Night, however due to the government enforced restrictions in place at the Club, Stars Tribute Night looks as if it also will be cancelled. So, we are planning on presenting the selected trophies at each of the Sporting Clubs presentation dinners this year.

The Golf Club has also resumed their Competition in late May with some great results as reported in their report on page 28. Unfortunately, the Snooker Club have not been able to restart their
COMMUNITY GROUP Since Covid-19 has been in our lives we have not been able to visit any nursing homes at all. We were doing a craft day once a month with one of the homes but of course we have stopped doing this at this time. I am sure the ladies there are missing our visits as much as we are missing them. We are hoping to be able to go to all the homes at Christmas time so we are still planning gifts for them, even if we can only take them to the doors and staff can hand them out. We do not want them to think they are forgotten through the Covid-19 period. We are now going to five nursing homes when we get back on track. They are – Estia Bexley Park, Fairmont Aged Care, St George Aged Care, and two new ones, Casa Mia Aged Care and Southhaven Aged Care. The two new ones we included just before the shutdown. The ladies have been busy during the last few months doing blankets, coat hangers, fingerless gloves, beanies, scarfs, just to name a few. We would like to thank members who have donated wool to us for our projects. We have also been doing some orders for members of the Club. If you would like anything crocheted or knitted for you just let reception know (9336 1500) and they will get in touch with us. We 30
