PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE non-perishables and donations for bales, watching it grow over the months from members, staff, our sub-clubs and local schools, all looking to help. These have now been distributed through the Buy A Bale Charity to those in need. Our staff have given blood donations, and we have assisted Bayside Bushcare with restoration of Hawthorne St Natural Area.

FROM THE

PRESIDENT As I write, I know you will join me in being so proud of the efforts of our Ramsgate RSL Club in our community. Whether it’s supporting our farmers in NSW who are doing it tough with little rain and hungry stock or helping the Starlight Children’s Foundation with the Pemberton Park Movie Under the Stars (my favourite movie too!) or seeing our team run the City to Surf in support of the Stroke Foundation, what a wonderful few months of activities we have been involved in and they are just a small sample of the packed program we have undertaken. At Ramsgate RSL, we’ve well and truly taken up the challenge to belong and share. We’ve received a wonderful collection of

And when you know all this, is it any wonder, we are Finalists in the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Awards. It is a true testament to the hard work from our management and staff in supporting our members in our community and a well deserved accolade. Stay tuned in October when the announcement of the winners will be made. Regardless of the outcome, we are grateful for our teams hard work and big efforts in our community. Keep up the good work as you are all award winners in our eyes. Spring will see the end of the Winter cold which some will enjoy, and will add colour to our world as the spring blossoms open. It also sees the end of Winter sport and as such, we congratulate all our Ramsgate RSL supported sporting groups for their 2018 season. As I drive around, it is fabulous to see the wash of blue and yellow, our team colours, on the local junior sporting fields throughout the Winter. Thank you to all the volunteers, so many, that help get our local children onto the sporting fields to participate in their favourite sport. All the best to our cricketers as they head into their Summer sport.

We are very excited to have launched our brand new website for members and guests. The improved site should be easy to use and navigate to find details of our many offerings here at the Club. A new feature that will make our busy members lives’ much easier is being able to renew online, with this feature opening with our renewal period in October 2018.

FROM THE CEO

Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of your Club magazine, Road to Ramsgate. It’s been a very busy period at the Club and it’s hard to believe we are already in the final quarter of the year! Great things have occurred in the past three months with even the chance for a member to win $88,888 cash in our Draw Till You Win promotion. What a year of members giveaways! From a trip to Vegas, a car and a cruise giveaway, we won’t be stopping there! We have our end of year Membership Promotion kicking off so I encourage everyone to renew or update your membership details with us during October/November for your chance to win a trip to Fiji or $2,000 cash. 2

Ramsgate RSL

As highlighted in our last magazine, the Club has begun the process of planning its future via the Club Masterplan. I’m thrilled to share with you that after significant and productive discussions, the Board have selected the talented Quattro Architects to bring to life a new and contemporary vision of your local Club - The Club the Community Chooses! More information on the plans will become available in due course and I look forward to sharing this with you all. Since launching our employee volunteer program in April this year, ‘The CARE Program’, our team have been able to assist 20 different charities and organisations in our local community including The Kogarah Storehouse, Foodbank, The Smith Family, Bear Cottage, St Patrick Green Aged Care to just name a few. Our team are very passionate about our community work and will continue to help assist those who need it most. If you know of a community organisation that could use our volunteers help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We congratulate our Women Bowlers who have won the Zone Championships and wish them well in their next level of competition. Via our Clubgrants program, Ramsgate RSL has helped many local charities again this year and the Board of Directors will always look to do our very best in this regard. This year we have joined with the Bayside ClubGrants Committee and allocated $119,181.91 to many local charities and organisations. This money is vital in helping all the charities continue to focus on the doing in the community. In many cases, it is the glue that enables these charities to achieve their goals and again, I’m using the word proud. I look forward to sharing another wonderful Melbourne Cup luncheon with you as last year’s spread was a highlight and of course, we then roll into Christmas. The management and staff enjoy bringing the Children’s Christmas Pantomine to life as much as our members and their families enjoy watching so please mark the date on your calendars. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family and friends a wonderful, peaceful Christmas full of smiles and joy. 2018 has been a special year for Ramsgate RSL and we are so glad you could be a part of this.

Sallianne Faulkner President

The team are hard at work planning new and exciting community events for our local families and residents to continuously enjoy. In collaboration with Bayside Council we have successfully held both our Family Fun Day in the Park and Movie under the Stars in the adjacent Pemberton Reserve. We are excited to be launching The Sweet Stop, a food truck event full of delicious dessert options taking place on the first Friday of October, November and December. We are proud to be supporting Foodbank with all proceeds from the event going to the organisation. Bring the family and join us for a sweet treat in the park whilst enjoying some music, retro cars and kids entertainment. The end of the year at Ramsgate RSL is always one of fun and good cheer, with many more members and guests around us. I look forward to seeing you over the Spring Carnival season and the festive Christmas period for a fantastic finish to a great year. Thank you for your continued patronage and loyalty at Ramsgate RSL. I wish you and your families a safe and very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you around the Club very soon!

Thank you to our members, guests, staff, local community schools and sporting groups who have generously donated dollars or goods to our Bale Out A Farmer campaign in August. It is with your generosity that we donated these funds

to our Aussie Farmers during this time of widespread drought. “Farmers are the ‘bread and butter’ of the hospitality industry, this is our small way of giving back and showing that we CARE for our mates in times of need, and to remind them that they are not alone

through this drought crisis”. said CEO David Moorcroft. Ramsgate RSL was proud to be able to match staff and members donations, bringing the total donation to organisation ‘Buy a Bale’ to $10,079.36.

CLUBSNSW CLUBS AND COMMUNITY AWARD FINALISTS Ramsgate RSL is proud to have been announced as a finalist in the 2018 ClubsNSW ‘Clubs and Community Awards’ for making a difference in the local community. These awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding social contributions made by all Clubs, small and large, in their local communities. Ramsgate RSL are finalists in two categories; Disability, Welfare and Social Inclusion for their help with a donation drive for charity ‘Dress for Success’ and Youth Leadership category for the Anzac Care Package initiative, an effort to bridge the gap of the ANZAC tradition with youth. Such nominations are just a couple of the community initiatives Ramsgate RSL’s team have been busy volunteering their time towards. Since Ramsgate’s volunteer program 6

Ramsgate RSL

commenced in April, the CARE Program, the RSL have been able to assist 20 different charities and community organisations.

Finalists will be announced 13 October at an awards ceremony held at the International Convention Centre.

TAKING STEPS TO REDUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

THE LAST STRAW

STARTING OCTOBER 1

When the Ramsgate RSL CARE program was introduced, the importance of our environmental sustainability footprint was set as a key long-term priority. As reported in the last magazine, we have initiated a number of actions in our war against waste including the introduction of our reusable keep cups. We are now proud to report that we are also taking action with reusable straws! Please note that we have now requested that staff only provide members and guests our environmentally friendly paper straws on request to once again showcase our communal commitment to sustainable practices. We are also excited to share that we have introduced an organic food waste solution system, ORCA, to ensure all areas of business contribute to the Clubs environmental initiatives. We will also be replacing our plastic bags at raffles with reusable carry bags made from HDPE resin. We encourage our patrons to reuse their bags and recycle in supermarket collection bins when no longer required.

WE’VE PUT AWAY DRINKING STRAWS IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE, AND WILL ONLY GIVE THEM OUT IF YOU SPECIFICALLY ASK FOR ONE.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING

Ramsgate RSL were excited to get involved in ClubsNSW ‘Do Something Day’ and make a difference in their community, but with a special twist…. they spread their kindness for an entire week! ‘Do Something Day’ is a ClubsNSW initiative to get the many clubs within NSW out and about and giving back to their local communities. Ramsgate RSL were excited to have their whole team involved in a week full of good deeds which included; • Lifeline Stress Down Day for the team • Helping with a sports day at local Ramsgate Public School • Assisting the local Salvo’s Store • Hosting a social bingo game at a local aged care facility for the residents • Providing the goods and cooking a BBQ to help raise funds for local Ramsgate Football Club • Planting trees in the local Bayside area for National Plant a Tree Day • Donating bales of hay for our Aussie Farmers Ramsgate RSL are extremely proud of the staff volunteer program, the CARE Program, which launched in April this year and has had great successes already. “Ramsgate RSL has always been at the heart of our community but we have really ramped this up this year and are getting our whole team involved” said CEO David Moorcroft. “This is our way of giving back and showing that as a Club we CARE for our local community”.

RAMSGATE SHINES THE LIGHT ON

STARLIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION “Sometimes when a child gets really sick, the fun, play and laughter of childhood seem to disappear. But sick kids are still kids at heart and the fun shouldn’t stop. This is where Starlight jumps in! Starlight Children’s Foundation helps sick kids forget

their illness and re-discover the joy of childhood”. With a number of staff having seen the effects on young children whose lives have become dulled by needles, hospital visits and painful

treatments, they wanted to do something that shines the light on childhood illnesses and make a real difference. “Families form a large part of our local community and that is why our staff thought it a fantastic idea to raise awareness and funds for kids in need in this unique way. Watching a new release movie at the cinemas can be a much loved activity for kids during school holidays, an activity that kids with life limiting illnesses can unfortunately miss out on” says Diana Nasr, Ramsgate RSL Marketing Coordinator. Our recent Movie Under the Stars event showed a box office favourite ‘The Greatest Showman’, raising $1,000 towards the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Thank you to Snow-Flow Sydney for generously donating all sales from popcorn and slushies from the night.

PROUD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP WITH THE

SETTLEMENT NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE Ramsgate RSL are very excited to announce their new community partnership with The Sydney University Settlement Neighbourhood Centre, a long-established community centre located in Redfern. The Settlement Neighbourhood Centre is a ‘safe place’ for all to come to connect, learn and exchange skills, culture and ideas. They work holistically and positively within the community, with an emphasis on early intervention especially with at risk youth. “We recognise that access to quality service, assistance, support, space, resources and opportunities should be provided to all regardless of socio-economic background. For this reason, we remain a free to low fee service across all our programs” said the Centre’s Manager, Kristina Touma. The centre offers many services and programs, but one program Ramsgate RSL are particularly excited to be supporting is the Settlement’s Leadership Program, which targets young at risk youth members (14-19 years old) of the Redfern/Waterloo community. The program develops leadership

skills of at risk young people with a focus developing Indigenous cultural knowledge and confidence to help other youth members of the community. The program is an 8-week program focusing on leadership, Indigenous cultural knowledge and confidence which finishes with a cultural camp in Alice Springs. As part of the club’s support, Ramsgate RSL will have the opportunity for a team member to participate in the program and travel with the group to the Northern Territory early next year to explore ideas that are important to the Aboriginal culture. Ramsgate RSL are proud to be sponsoring the centre’s Mental Health Month sporting event held in October at Alexandria Park in the inner Sydney area, targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young People attending Alexandria Park Community School. This school has a vibrant community of local Aboriginal youth who live in Alexandria, Waterloo, Redfern and surrounding areas. This free and welcoming event will focus on positive mental and physical wellbeing of students and incorporate OzTag, Tennis, Wheelchair sports, healthy food options and wellbeing workshops

SCHOOL AID FOR THE SMITH FAMILY Ramsgate RSL recently teamed up with The Smith Family to assist children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The Smith Family is a children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Ramsgate RSL volunteers kindly put together 27 school aid packs inclusive of different learning materials such as pens, pencils, rubbers, rulers and textbooks. These were then delivered to children in need at Miller Public School to assist with their education. 16

Ramsgate RSL

provided by local health services. As part of Ramsgate RSL’s partnership with the centre, they have also committed to sending volunteers to host a BBQ for the Youth once a month with their after-school care program, ‘Step Up Tweens’. The program encourages young participants to explore the skills learned and build relationships with each other, the Settlement staff and volunteers. “It is great to be involved in this fantastic program that focuses on self-esteem and building confidence in social skills amongst the vulnerable youth in our community” said Ramsgate RSL’s Commercial Manager, Nicole Heinrich. “This is one volunteer activity that is extremely special and a fantastic way for our team to better our cultural understanding”.

RRSL TACKLES THE CITY2SURF TO ASSIST THE STROKE FOUNDATION! Raising vital funds for the Stroke Foundation, a team of 8 participants from Ramsgate RSL were proud to undertake the City2Surf challenge, tackling a grueling 14km for the great cause! Collectively the team raised $850 for the Stroke Foundation, a national charity that partners with the community to prevent, treat and beat stroke. The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac has been running for 48 years and is the World’s largest fun run that had over 85,000 people take part raising money for a number of different charities. 18

Ramsgate RSL

“It was so great to take part in this iconic fun run whilst raising funds for the Stroke Foundation” said team member, Sonya Thompson. “Although the track was challenging at times, especially on heartbreak hill, knowing that our team were helping those that need it most was a great driving force to help us finish the run”.
