Washington’s first Barn Quilt Trail closing in on milepost 100 By Lyn Derrick

Washington state’s first barn quilt trail passed a major milestone when the 50th painted quilt block went up at the Schnase farm in Kittitas County in May of 2013. Coming three weeks after the opening of the trail in late April of that year, number 50 proved community volunteers would not be hanging up their paintbrushes, hammers and nails anytime soon. “When we opened the trail in April, we had 42 blocks on barns,” said Jacky Fausset, president of Barn Quilts of Kittitas County. BQKC is the group behind this effort to recognize Washington’s agricultural heritage – while joining the nationally barn quilt trail movement started by Donna Sue Groves in Ohio in 2001. Barn quilts are painted wood quilt blocks chosen as symbols of family and farm history. For Rich and Shirley Schnase, the quilt block on their 1912 gambrel style barn acknowledges their Scandinavian heritage. After changing ownership over the years, the barn landed in the Schnases’ devoted hands in 2007. And it isn’t actually a barn anymore. The Schnases applied their craftsmanship to the old barn, converting it into their home. They’ve restored almost every board for wainscoting, counters, flooring and stairs. Even the original cow stations, hay trolley and beams are incorporated into the interior design. “The barn just spoke to us,” Shirley says about choosing to make it their home. The Scandinavian barn quilt on the outside reflects treasured Scandinavian pieces on the inside. It’s a heritage the couple shares with other settlers of Kittitas Valley in Washington state. While BQKC paused to recognize this unique number 50 as a breakthrough benchmark, it was a brief pause. Each month since the group has added more barn quilts to the state’s

total. BQKC is closing in on their goal of 100 hung throughout Kittitas County in time for the second annual Central Washington Quilt Show in Ellensburg, Washington, April 25-26. “Our barn quilt trail provides the connecting thread between our rural and urban areas,” said Fausset. “It weaves our old barns into the fabric of our historic building like the South Cle Elum Depot, historic downtown Ellensburg and the celebrated mining community of Roslyn. From the Farm Agricultural roots run deep all year long Farming is a way of life in Kittitas County. While the area is known for Timothy Hay and cattle, it also has a thriving 4-H program, two popular farmers markets and a number of sustainable organic farms. Ellensburg residents come together each week in the summer to visit with neighbors and peruse locally grown produce at the Kittitas County Farmers Market. The market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays on Fourth Avenue between Pearl and Ruby streets downtown. It runs from May through October. Market-goers often are treated to live musical performances and once a year, in the fall, the market is invaded by street performers for Buskers in the Burg. In the Upper County, the Roslyn Farmers Market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays from June 15 to Sept. 14. It features an array of fruit, vegetables, flowers, baked goods and crafts, and often includes live music.

Other places to get a taste of rural life: • The Kittitas County Fair over Labor Day weekend is a good place to see local 4-Hers proudly displaying their animals and to learn about the county’s rural roots. • Farms in the county that raise sustainable produce and livestock for sale include Parke Creek Farm, Fuzzy Rhino Organic Farm, Windy N Ranch, River Farm Organic Produce and Green Bow Farm. Kittitas Valley Greenhouse raises heirloom tomatoes. For an expanded list of farms around Kittitas County please visit www.kittitascountychamber.com. • Farm events: Local businesses that open their farms in the fall for harvest activities: Dusty’s Nursery: Hosts a fall festival each year in October. Suncadia: The resort hosts a harvest festival at the historic Nelson Dairy Farm in October with a straw maze and wagon rides. Anderson Family Farm: The farm raises goats, and uses the milk for lotion, soap and other beauty products. The farm hosts a fall festival in October. Huffman Farms: Offers a u-pick pumpkin patch and hayrides in October.

Birding

Late winter is prime time for viewing bald eagles in Kittitas County. The best place to view bald eagles is northeast of Ellensburg in the Fairview and Naneum areas during calving season from February through late April. In addition to the late winter/spring visits, bald eagles also can be found here in the fall feeding on salmon. The Umtanum Creek Trail in the Yakima River Canyon is a good location to find golden eagles and other birds. Visitors are invited to Kittitas County Audubon Society’s First Saturday Birdwalk each month. Meet at 8 a.m. at the parking lot to Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park in Ellensburg, located on Umptanum Road where the bridge crosses the Yakima River. Trip leaders provide the information and answer any questions, and trips happen rain or shine. Bring a pair of binoculars and dress for the weather.

Fishing

Kittitas County caters to every fishing enthusiast in the family — from the kid with his first rod and reel to the adult with the latest state-of-the-art fly fishing gear. The Yakima River is a year-round fly-fishing destination. It is a catch-andrelease river for wild trout. There are multiple fly fishing gear and guide services in the county, including Red’s Flyshop, Troutwater, The Evening Hatch and Worley-Bugger Fly Co. The Columbia River on the eastern edge of the county is also a prime spot for sturgeon, walleye, salmon and steelhead. In addition to the rivers and streams, the county is dotted with lakes. Lake fishing opportunities begin at Snoqualmie Pass with Keechelus and Kachess and continue through the lower valley. In the lower county, Mattoon Lake and Fiorito Lake are popular destinations, particularly for families with children. The nonprofit Kittitas County Field and Stream Club has produced a recreational users’ map of the Yakima River, and it is valuable for those boating, floating or rafting the river. Floating the Yakima through the Yakima River Canyon is an awe-inspiring adventure. The canyon features massive and weathered basalt cliffs, rising above the river, and rolling, high shrub-steppe hills. The stretch of river southeast of Ellensburg from Ringer Loop Road to the Roza Recreational Site sees the most float and raft traffic when temperatures rise in Central Washington. Although a Yakima River float trip provides spectacular scenic views and wildlife viewing, it can be dangerous for those who don’t pay attention to common sense safety practices, recreational rules and hazardous river sites. Wildlife viewing

For those who are patient, viewing wildlife in Kittitas County is possible just about any time of the year. From late December through as late as early April, state Fish and Wildlife Department personnel daily provide hay to a herd of elk at the end of Watt Canyon Road, 15 miles northwest of Ellensburg. Feeding begins at 8 a.m. and visitors can watch from behind a wildlife fence and parking area.

What was once the path of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad is now 110 miles of trail that spans from West of the Cascades at Cedar Falls east through Kittitas County to the Columbia River.

A number of sno-parks are available for use, and more information about specific locales can be found on the Washington State Parks website.

The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, or Iron Horse State Park, is open year round for day use and is ideal for walking, biking, horseback riding and rock climbing in the summer months and for cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing in the winter months.

There are multiple access points to Iron Horse State Park, including several in Upper Kittitas County where some of the best views along the trail can be enjoyed. It’s also where the trail goes into the Snoqualmie Tunnel, the only one of the trail’s five tunnels open. The rest are closed indefinitely due to safety concerns. The closest trailhead to the Snoqualmie Tunnel is at Hyak, Exit 54 on Interstate 90. The tunnel, which is more than two miles long, was closed for more than two years in 2009 for repairs. It reopened in July 2011. Discover Passes are available at Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centers in Cle Elum and Ellensburg.

Snowmobiling

Flocks of visitors journey to Kittitas County each winter, but few activities draw more outdoors enthusiasts to the area than snowmobiling. U.S. Forest Service officials estimated that 20,000 snowmobilers visited snoparks in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest during the 2010-11 winter season. Those numbers might not surprise snowmobilers cruising through Kittitas County’s vast landscape with wind whistling through helmets and adrenaline pumping through their veins. The railroad operated from 1908 to 1980, closing after it went bankrupt, according to the Washington State Parks department. Washington’s Department of Natural Resources acquired the property and turned it over to Washington State Parks. A Discover Pass is required to park at many of the trailheads.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding

Downhill skiers and snowboarders can find their fill of excitement at the Summit at Snoqualmie ski area, about 50 miles from Ellensburg. The ski area includes 25 lifts, four separate base areas, 1,981 acres of skiable terrain and 523 acres of backcountry terrain. The ski area also offers a tubing area along with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The U.S. Forest Service offers guided snowshoeing trips in the Snoqualmie Pass area in the winter. The visitor information center at Snoqualmie Pass can be reached at 425-434-6111. In the summer months, the pass offers berry picking, wildlife watching, hiking and backpacking from numerous trailheads. Several waterfalls and pristine alpine lakes are waiting to be discovered.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

Popular places for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing include Snoqualmie Pass and the Hyak area and Blewett Pass along Highway 97. The Summit and Snoqualmie and Suncadia both have trails and more information. Several shops in the area offer gear rentals, and visitors can find more information about snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and other activities by checking in at the Cle Elum Ranger Station at 803 W. Second St. in Cle Elum. The U.S. Forest Service or the visitor center offers guided snowshoe hikes at Snoqualmie Pass in the winter.

Roslyn and Kittitas County and is dedicated to the pioneers who first settled in this area. A walk on the trail affords visitors a first-hand look at the coalmining heritage through the remains of Roslyn’s mines, at the railroad depot site and barn, and at Powder House Road where dynamite was stored. The easy trail is open to walkers, horses, bicyclists, cross-country skiers and snowmobiles. Mines in Roslyn operated from the late 1880s to 1963. • Umtanum Falls — This 1-mile trail to Umtanum Falls is an easy hike, and is about a 10-mile drive on Umptanum Road from Ellensburg. The trail leads to a 40-foot waterfall and traverses forest, meadows and sagebrush. Umtamum Falls is especially pretty in the winter, though the trail can get icy and hikers should be cautious. A Discover Pass is required. • Umtanum Creek Canyon— The Umtanum Creek Canyon hike starts with a hike over a suspension bridge crossing the Yakima River and travels into a shrub-steppe environment full of wildlife and birds. The trailhead is at the Umtanum Recreation Site along state Route 821. A BLM permit is required during the summer and is available at the parking lot. • Manastash Ridge — A popular hike for local residents, this steep, tough workout yields rich rewards. The wildflowers in the spring are fabulous, and the view is tremendous year-round. There are two main trails to the top, the Westberg Trail, named after a popular Ellensburg coach and the Boy Scout Trail, accessed further to the west after hiking along an irrigation ditch. The trail gains 1,740 feet in about two miles and can be accessed from exit 101 (Thorp Highway). Turn right off the exit, go two miles, turn right on Cove Road and go past two stop signs. Parking is on the right.

• Cooper River — The trail follows the Cooper River valley upstream to Cooper Lake, and offers good berry picking opportunities in late summer. The trailhead to Cooper Lake is found at Salmon la Sac campground north of Roslyn. U.S. Forest Service permit needed. • Forest Discovery Trail — This three-mile trail near the top of Blewett Pass on Highway 97 offers scenic hiking in the summer and accessible snowshoeing in the winter, with interpretative signs to guide your visit.

Golf

Kittitas County is a great place for golf in the spring and summer months, with four public golf courses in the area. • Suncadia resort — Located just west of Cle Elum on the eastern slopes of the Cascades, Suncadia resort has two public and one private 18-hole course. The public Prospector course offers 7,100 yards of championship golf, and it was named one of the best new public courses by Golf Digest magazine in 2006. Rope Rider is a public course that opened in August 2011 and was built along the site of historic Roslyn mines. A practice range, private instruction, junior golf, group instruction and golf clinics are available for players of all ages and skill levels.

• Ellensburg Golf Club — Opened 80 years ago along the banks of the Yakima River, the Ellensburg Golf & Country Club is a nine-hole course with alternate “back nine” tee boxes that provide an 18-hole experience. Teanaway

Spring usually arrives in the Teanaway Basin earlier than other parts of the Cle Elum Ranger District, says Forest Service public information officer Nancy Jones. That prompt snow melt makes the Teanaway popular with early season visitors to the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest. But spring, summer and fall are good times to enjoy trails like Stafford Creek or the Miller Peak to Bear Creek Loop and camping at the Beverly campground. Wildflowers often begin to bloom in the area’s lower elevations as early as mid-May, when trails in the Bean Creek and Beverly basins become popular for hiking and wildflower viewing. The flowers last through about August, moving higher in elevation as the snow line rises.

In the wintertime, the Teanaway lures snowmobilers, snowshoers and backcountry skiers. Most trailheads in the Teanaway require a Northwest Forest Pass that can be purchased ahead of time at the ranger station in Cle Elum. Jones suggests that visitors to the Teanaway check road conditions before venturing out.

Salmon la Sac

Salmon la Sac, a summertime destination for hiking, fishing, swimming and kayaking, is a 15-mile drive from Roslyn, at the edge of the wilderness. The area has several family-oriented campgrounds, which offer easy access to the Cooper and Cle Elum rivers, and ample hiking trails. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness just north of Salmon la Sac has some of the best hiking in the state. In winter, state Route 903 is plowed all the way to Salmon la Sac, and snowmobilers flock to the area to ride both groomed trails and steep slopes.

Lake Cle Elum Lake Cle Elum is seven miles northwest of Cle Elum. Fishing is open year round, with a lake trout fishery and burbot. There is a U.S. Forest Service boat launch and camping facilities at the lake, and the spot is a popular place for picnicking and swimming during the summer.

The area is popular with horseback riders, and ridge-top trails offer breathtaking views of the Stuart and Enchantment mountain ranges.

Lake Easton State Park

The 516-acre Lake Easton State Park is a year-round destination for visitors. The park has beautiful mountain views and hiking trails to explore in the summer and cross-country and snowmobiling trails to enjoy in the winter. The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding during the summer. The campground is full most weekends and the day-use parking lot fills up on sunny days. Camping reservations are recommended. The park’s location also allows for snowy winter-sport opportunities. A snopark permit is required from Nov. 15 through April 30 for day use and winter camping.

Ellensburg is a rodeo city and a college town. It’s an art and music destination with easy access to the outdoors. And it’s a renewable energy leader with an agricultural foundation. With a population of 18,500, Ellensburg is Kittitas County’s largest city and the county seat. William Bud Wilson built the first log cabin in 1868 where Ellensburg now stands, and AJ Splawn and Ben Burch moved a log house to a spot nearby so they could open a store in 1870. In 1872, John A. Shoudy bought the store, called Robbers Roost, and 160 acres of land. Ellensburg was named after his wife, Mary Ellen in 1875. A phoenix painted on the side of the Davidson building in downtown Ellensburg symbolizes the community’s rise from the ashes after a fire destroyed most of downtown in 1889. At the time, Ellensburg was in the running to be the state capital, a title which went to Olympia instead. On the north side of town is Central Washington University, which first opened its doors as the Washington State Normal School in 1891, two years after Washington became a state. The normal school became Central Washington College of Education in 1937, Central Washington State College in 1961, and Central Washington University in 1977.

The city’s biggest shows of the year — the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair — happen every Labor Day weekend. Jazz in the Valley, scheduled for July 25-27 this year, is one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier music festivals. Ellensburg’s WinterHop BrewFest is in January and the Art of Wine, running with the Western Art Show, is May 16-18. There’s even a festival for dogs. During the popular Dachshunds on Parade, scheduled for June 21, about 250 wiener dogs take over downtown Ellensburg to strut their stuff. In the fall, Ellensburg plays host to Buskers in the Burg in September and the Ellensburg Film Festival in October. The city also is a leader in renewable energy. Wind farms are scattered throughout the valley, and a community solar electric project gives Ellensburg residents an opportunity to invest in locally produced energy and receive a credit on their electric bill in return.

The Ellensburg downtown core boasts three galleries — Gallery One, the Clymer Museum and Gallery, and Goodey Gallery operated by the Western Art Association, all on Pearl Street. Third Ave., Ellensburg. The museum in the historic Cadwell Building in downtown Ellensburg is dedicated to the history of Kittitas County.

• Sarah Spurgeon Gallery: CWU campus, Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Blvd. It is dedicated to showing CWU student, faculty and alumni artwork.

• The Museum of Culture and Environment offers changing exhibits on Central Washington’s history and biodiversity. The museum is on the first floor of Dean Hall at Central Washington University. Admission is free.

Art fans also are drawn to Ellensburg to view the works of the late Richard Elliott and his wife, Jane Orleman, and their home, Dick and Jane’s Spot. The house and yard on First Avenue and Pearl Street in Ellensburg are filled with the work of more than 40 Northwest artists, along with 10,000 bottle caps and thousands of reflectors.

Rodeo Arena and fair

As for music, the Jazz in the Valley music festival, held on the last weekend of July, brings musicians from around the Northwest to Ellensburg for a weekend of music and dancing. If western music is more to your liking, Spirit of the West over Presidents Day weekend each February brings topname singers and cowboy poets to town.

The Ellensburg Rodeo Arena and the annual Ellensburg Rodeo attract champion cowboys and thousands of fans every Labor Day weekend. The rodeo is paired each year with the Kittitas County Fair, a family friendly old fashioned fair that’s been around since 1885.

Buskers in the Burg, held in downtown Ellensburg in September, features street performers, giant puppets and an outdoor concert.

The Ellensburg Rodeo is the last stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Gold Buckle Tour and host to the PRCA’s Xtreme Bulls Tour finale. The fastpaced, bull-riding only competition showcases the top cowboys and bovine athletes in the world.

The city of Cle Elum, nestled amongst the eastern Cascades’ towering evergreens and located within sight of jagged peaks, has evolved since its incorporation in 1902 from a mining and logging town into a hub for Upper Kittitas County’s burgeoning recreation scene.

Within town, history and recreation often blend. Visitors can enjoy the Coal Mines Trail, a former railway bed that links the towns of Roslyn, Ronald and Cle Elum, as it meanders past the sites of several historical coal mines. Motorized vehicles are only permitted on the trail during winter months, when it opens for snowmobile use. The historic Carpenter House offers visitors a glimpse at life in early 20th century Cle Elum. The Historical Society also operates Cle Elum’s telephone museum, which documents the switch from manual phone service to automatic dialing. Coffee houses, restaurants and shops are spread throughout the streets of downtown Cle Elum. Cle Elum Attractions Museums

Kittitas County residents maintain a strong connection to their past, and a variety of museums and historic attractions celebrate the area’s history. • Telephone Museum: 221 E. First St. in Cle Elum. Cle Elum was one of the last cities in the country to use a manual telephone switchboard, and displays cover the history of telephone technology from 1901 to 1970. • Carpenter House Museum: 302 W. Third St., Cle Elum. Frank Carpenter, a prominent local banker, built the house in 1914 as a private residence. The Carpenter family donated the house to the Northern Kittitas County Historical Society in 1989, and the society has since opened the house to the public.

Washington State Horse Park The Washington State Horse Park, which began operations in 2011, hosts a variety of events throughout the year for all disciplines, age groups and skill levels. The 112-acre horse park has three arenas, horse stalls, miles of trails, wash racks for horses, recreational vehicle and trailer parking areas and more. The park hosted 40 events and groups in 2013, including two major hunter-jumper shows with more than 700 daily attendees, along with numerous small clinics, camps and breed clubs. The horse park also serves those interested in less formal equestrian activities such as trail riding and back country packing. Access to the park costs $15 a day and season passes are $60. A wall at the Douglas A. Munro Memorial is dedicated to all of the servicemen from Cle Elum. Each war is represented on the wall with the names of those men and women who served in the military.

Douglas Munro Memorial A memorial to U.S. Coast Guard Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro is located in the veterans section of Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Cle Elum. Munro posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor after he saved 500 Marines during an evacuation Sept. 27, 1942, where at one point, he used himself and his boat to cover the last of the Marines as they left shore. He is the only member of the Coast Guard to receive the Medal of Honor.

South Cle Elum South Cle Elum grew up around the Milwaukee Rail Depot, while its counterpart to the north developed along the Great Northern Railroad. The process formed two distinct towns separated by a river. The railroad dominated life in early South Cle Elum, and long-time residents recall the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s train depot as a lively place, filled with railroad workers on layovers and people constantly coming and going. Passenger rail service through South Cle Elum ended in 1961 amid financial hardship for the railroad, but freight trains continued to rumble through town until 1980. In 1999, a nonprofit group called the Friends of the South Cle Elum Depot banded together with the goal of renovating the depot, which had fallen into disrepair. The group has since evolved into the Cascade Rail Foundation. In 2006, they reopened the depot. In addition to the depot, about 500 residents live in South Cle Elum, and the town has a city hall, a park and baseball fields.

Iron Horse Inn B&B

Officially known as the Cle Elum Supplementation and Research Facility, the hatchery opened in 1997 with the goal of boosting the spring chinook salmon population and supporting research. It is sponsored in part by the Yakima Nation and Bonneville Power Administration.

The nearby Iron Horse Inn B&B is one way to immerse yourself into the area’s railroad history. Guests can spend the night in a renovated caboose car.

Visitors can see the facility from a sheltered viewing area - as Lou Goldsmith, a volunteer host from San Antonio, puts it, “a bird’s eye view of what’s happening.” It is a good way to learn about the salmon’s threeto four-year migration. Iron Horse Inn was originally constructed in 1909 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad and served until 1974 as temporary housing for men working for the railway. Now featuring an extensive collection of historic photographs, artifacts, and railroad memorabilia, the renovated Inn has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Roslyn’s history has followed a series of booms and busts. Between the late 1800s and 1910, the population of Roslyn swelled from a few hundred to more than 3,000 its all-time high. The last coal mines shut down in 1963, and today the population is just under 1,000. Roslyn boomed again when the awardwinning television show “Northern Exposure” came to town in 1990. The film crews and actors left when the show ended in 1995, but “Northern Exposure” gifts are still for sale at Cicely’s Gift Shop. Dedicated fans travel from all over the country for Moosefest, a “Northern Exposure” fan festival, and tourists take photos in front of the Roslyn Cafe mural everyday in the summer. The town is bordered by a 300-acre, city-owned forest. Miles of nonmotorized trails wind through the mixed forest of pines and firs and connect with the nearby Coal Mines Trail, a five-mile railroad easement between Cle Elum and Ronald. The tall trees in the forest hide slag heaps and remnants of mining infrastructure. Other destinations near Roslyn include the Alpine Lakes Wilderness north of town and the Brick Saloon, which is the oldest continuously operating bar in the state.

Roslyn Attractions Museums

The Roslyn Museum, 203 W. Pennsylvania Ave., features displays on coal mining, baseball, and everyday life in the Upper County. Volunteers are available to answer questions about the artifacts inside, and provide background on the area’s history.

Roslyn Cemeteries The cemeteries cover 19 acres and consist of 26 separate cemeteries formed prior to the turn of the 20th century. The cemeteries reflect a rich ethnic mix that came to the area to work in the coal mines. At least 24 nationalities are represented within the nearly 5,000 graves. The cemeteries were listed on the National Historic Register in 1978.

Roslyn Cemetery: From Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn, go past the museum and up the hill merging into Fifth Street. Turn left off Fifth Street onto Memorial Drive and enter the lower section of the cemetery. Walk up the hill to the right to get to the upper portion of the cemetery complex.

NWI building The NWI building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn was the company store for the Northwest Improvement Co. coal mines for decades. Today it has a small visitors center and several businesses, each providing shoppers with unique and handcrafted products and services.

Alpine Lakes Wilderness The Alpine Lakes Wilderness covers 394,000 acres in the Central Cascades, and features 47 trailheads and 615 miles of trails, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The area features mountain lakes, lush forest and snowy peaks. It’s a great place for backcountry hiking, camping and mountain climbing. Popular spots include Ingalls Lake in the Teanaway and Pete Lake, accessible from Salmon la Sac north of Roslyn. Contact the Cle Elum Ranger District for more information. The 6,400-acre Suncadia resort community in Cle Elum provides a host of amenities for visiting guests and local residents. The Suncadia community includes events for locals and visitors, rooms for family vacations, real estate and facilities for conferences. Its proximity to the Puget Sound area makes it an attractive weekend escape or second home option for families living on the west side of the Cascade Mountains. The resort offers both casual and fine dining at a number of restaurants. Swiftwater Cellars, a destination winery built atop an old coal mine, is among the attractions. Visitors to Suncadia also can pamper themselves at the Glade Spring destination spa or relax at the resort’s swim and fitness center. The resort is home to three golf courses, including the Rope Rider Golf Course, which opened in August 2011. The 7,300-yard-long Rope Rider Course is designed to accommodate family play, and is one of two Suncadia courses open to the general public. The resort’s other two courses, Prospector and Tumble Creek, were included in Golf Week magazine’s list of the 50 best new courses in 2006. Prospector is open to the public, but Tumble Creek is a private course serving residents of the Tumble Creek community located within Suncadia. Suncadia also offers visitors miles of trails suitable for cross country skiing, cycling, snowshoeing and hiking. In the winter months, Suncadia is home to a popular ice skating rink and tubing run. The ice skating rink, tubing run and the trails are open to the public. The resort also hosts a number of events throughout the year that are open to the public. A popular fall festival is held at the old Nelson Dairy Farm at Suncadia, and a mud run and downhill dummy race draw enthusiastic crowds. Many see the city of Kittitas and the immediate area around it as a friendly, hometown community where housing is affordable, Interstate 90 is close and municipal services such as water, sewer collection and treatment, police and fire departments, schools, parks and a small downtown with lively businesses are readily available. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 683, which serves the entire county, is in Kittitas. In addition, the city has a community hall with public rental space, a public library and an outdoors gazebo surrounded by a small park with new playground equipment and picnic shelters. Kittitas was founded as part of the westward expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroads. The community was established in 1889 and was incorporated as a city within the state of Washington in 1931. The $1.4 million project to remodel, expand and update Kittitas City Hall and its fire station was formally completed in 2011. New, friendly businesses have been established in the past two years in downtown and at the Exit 115 interchange area to Interstate 90, including restaurants, taverns and others. New downtown sidewalks, street lighting and flower planters have been installed for community safety and beautification.

Olmstead Place State Park Olmstead Place State Park is a 217-acre day-use park that features picnic space, beautiful gardens, walking trails and a small museum. The 217-acre farm has two houses: a farmhouse and a smaller cabin. Samuel Olmstead and his family moved to the site in 1875, the same year Ellensburg was platted. The park hosts a popular threshing bee each September, and is at 921 N. Ferguson Road, about three miles west of Kittitas.

The city’s Wilson Park off Main Street surrounds a historic railroad depot and other buildings under the jurisdiction of the city. Plans call for the restoration of the old depot.

Near the park is a popular entrance to and exit from the cross-state John Wayne Pioneer Trail that sits atop the former Milwaukee Road railroad track bed. The trail is used by hikers, mountain bikers, joggers, horse riders and horse and wagon operators year-round.

Although the rural community of Thorp northwest of Ellensburg can be easily accessed from Interstate 90, most of it is far enough away from the freeway and deep into the rural area of the Kittitas Valley to provide a unique mix of farm and ranch lands, quiet country homes with accompanying acreage, and small niche agricultural operations including organic farms. In the past decade, the Thorp area also has attracted residents who are pursuing the visual arts: painting, sculpting and other artistic expressions. Thorp Community Day, held the first full weekend in October, provides a fun, family event for the community. In the past, the event has featured a grand parade, market and carnival. The historic building, Thorp Grade School, was built in 1936 and continues to be used by the Thorp School District. The community is served by a post office, a church, a volunteer-based fire protection district, a rural school district and small businesses. A large, multi-story antique and specialty food mall is close to the freeway at Thorp’s Exit 101 along with a convenience store and gas station.

Thorp Grist Mill

Thorp’s roots dig deep into the valley’s history. It is home to the oldest industrial/business structure still standing in Kittitas County. The restored Thorp grist mill, circa 1883, and the surrounding Ice Pond Park, is on North Thorp Highway northwest of Thorp’s small residential area and Thorp School District buildings. The mill, nearly fully equipped just as it was when it stopped operating in 1946, is maintained as a major tourist destination by the nonprofit Thorp Mill Town Historical Preservation Society. For visitors, there are self-guided outdoor tours available year-round and guided indoor tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

A stream provided power to the mill, and the nearby pond provided ice blocks used to chill produce packed into trains heading for cities. It also offered locals a chance to go ice skating. The mill, and the small community of Thorp, became a gathering place for area farmers who brought their grain to the mill.

The community of Vantage sits on a scenic bluff overlooking the Columbia River about 28 miles east of Ellensburg off Interstate 90. Vantage may have only 100 or so full-time residents, but it welcomes many more guests throughout the year. Through the summer, Vantage swells with people traveling to and from concerts at the Gorge Amphitheater near George, Wash., across the Columbia River in Grant County. Vantage is a hub for recreation on the Columbia River, though some activities were curtailed this spring after a crack was found in the Wanapum Dam. As part of efforts to repair the dam, the Wanapum Reservoir water level was lowered in March, and access to the shoreline and boat launches was closed. For updated information, check with the Grant County Public Utility District (www.grantpud.org) or the Gingko Petrified Forest State Park at 509-856-2700. The hope was recreational facilities such as Wanapum State Park and Getty’s Cove would reopen later in the year. There’s still plenty to do away from the shoreline, though. The Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Center features displays on the geological history of the area as well as information on ancient local Native American culture. The center includes Wanapum tribe petrogylphs. The Wanapum tribe lived along the Columbia River. Petrified wood was discovered in the region in the early 1930s, leading to the creation of the park. A nearby upland trail offers an up-close look at an ancient fossil bed.

Wild Horse Wind Farm & Solar Facility

Puget Sound Energy’s Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility east of Ellensburg gives visitors an up-close view of wind power generation. The Wild Horse facility, 17 miles east of Ellensburg with 149 turbines, also has the Pacific Northwest’s single-largest solar power installation. The Renewable Energy Center is open to visitors seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., from April 1 through Nov. 30. When open, Wild Horse offers guided tours and arrangements can be made for tours by groups at other times. Easton, the first town east of Snoqualmie Pass, is home to a few unique businesses and ample recreation opportunities. The Easton Saloon parking lot is often packed with snowmobilers in the winter. The Parkside Cafe and Turtle Lounge is another popular spot.

In the summer, people flock to 516-acre Lake Easton State Park to boat, fish, hike and test the lake’s cold water. The John Wayne Pioneer Trail runs along the southern edge of the park and into town, which is about a mile from the lake. In the winter, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and sledders play in the old-growth forest surrounding the Yakima River and the lake, which is a reservoir of the river. The state park and an RV park along the shore of Lake Easton are popular for camping in the summer, and reservations are often necessary on weekends at the state park. For a town with slightly fewer than 500 residents, Easton throws a big party on Memorial Day weekend. The parade on Railroad Street is one of the best in the county. The celebration started in the 1990s and has included a pancake breakfast, street fair, live music, raffle, talent show and car show.

The 17-acre town site of Liberty, more than 10 miles northeast of Cle Elum off U.S. Highway 97 and along Liberty Road, once was a rip-roarin’ gold mining town in the late 1890s. Several hundred people came and went in a year’s time with hopes to strike it rich, although perhaps only 200 lived there permanently. The population is much smaller now. There’s a community information kiosk with photos of old-time gold strikes and nuggets. Nearby is the old fire hall that’s always open with an exhibit of historic photos of life in Liberty and information about local hard-rock mining. There are still gold-mining claims in the area about 20 miles northwest of Ellensburg that are worked off-and-on by locals and out-of-towners. Visitors can pan for gold, but must be careful not to trespass on private property or a claim.

The town was officially recognized as a historic district in 1974 and is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service lands that are known for great camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and four-wheel-drive trips in approved areas. In its heyday in the 1890s, Liberty sported a school house, post office, a store, a women’s literary society and what some believe was one of the largest, if not the largest, dance hall in the county. It attracted Saturday night dancers and socializers from all over Kittitas County even into the 1920s. Some of the largest gold nuggets in the state came from the Liberty area in the old days before and after 1900, with a 70-ounce nugget discovered in 1901. The area also is known for crystalline wire gold, worth many times more than regular gold. An example of Liberty crystalline gold is on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Ronald

The last of the coal mines near Ronald, a tiny unincorporated town northwest of Roslyn, closed in 1963, but until that time, the population included much of the same ethnic diversity found in Roslyn. In the late 1800s, African American coal miners were brought in from the East to break a strike at the No. 3 mine, where the town of Ronald is located. The miners were unaware that they would be strike breakers. As their train arrived, they were met by strikers carrying guns. No blood was spilled, but for a time, the newcomers would regularly arm themselves to ward off attacks from other miners. Within 10 years, an uneasy peace was established between the miners. Today, Ronald serves as a jumping off point for outdoor enthusiasts venturing into the Lake Cle Elum area, Salmon la Sac or other parts of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and Alpine Lakes Wilderness where campgrounds and snowmobile and hiking trails abound.

Washington state’s most heavily traveled mountain pass is not only a ski destination in the winter, but also a popular summer recreation stop-off.
