S

kyler Floe was born and raised north of Seattle in Lynnwood, Washington and began playing trumpet at age 10. While attending Mountlake Terrace High School, Skyler played in its acclaimed jazz band. As a Senior, Skyler was a participant at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, where Wynton Marsalis awarded him the Outstanding Trumpet Soloist Award. Inspired by all genres of trumpet playing including classical and jazz, Skyler moved to Ellensburg, WA to study trumpet technique with pedagogue, John Harbaugh at Central Washington University, where he earned his undergraduate degrees in classical performance and music education. Throughout his studies at CWU, Skyler made regular appearances at the National Trumpet Competition in both classical and jazz divisions as well as the International Trumpet Guild. While attending CWU, Skyler regularly performed around the PNW as a leader of his own jazz quintet Hot Minute, and spent four years as a member of CWU’s critically acclaimed Jazz Band 1 where in 2015 they won the Next Generation Jazz Festival earning them a performance at the 2015 Monterey Jazz

After finishing his studies at CWU, Skyler spent two years studying at the Institute of Jazz in Graz, Austria under the tutelage of Jim Rotondi. While in Graz, Skyler performed and recorded with musicians from all over the world in Austria’s lively jazz scene. Doing so led to the creation of Skyler’s project The Chordless Quartet, which performs Skyler’s original compositions and features some of the best up-and-coming jazz musicians on the European scene. Skyler completed his MM in Jazz Studies at Indiana University where he accepted a position as an associate instructor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. In 2019, Skyler was one of five trumpet players selected to compete in the prestigious Carmine Caruso

International Jazz Trumpet Competition and now resides in NYC as an active freelancing trumpet player. In October of 2021, Skyler released his debut album Abstraction which features all original compositions.musicians represent a

n the Pacific Northwest, where she built her career, Greta Matassa wins wide acclaim; 8 times, the readers of Earshot, the Seattle jazz magazine, have voted her the best jazz vocalist in the Northwest, including 2021! She was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2014. Jim Wilke, the Seattle jazz maven and host of the syndicated “Jazz After Hours” radio program, praises her versatility. “She has a fearlessness in approaching material,” Wilke says, “that makes her like an instrumentalist in a jam session.” Bassist and producer John Clayton says “One of the best jazz singers we

have to boast about these days.” Her 40 year career has been a whirlwind of exciting opportunities and experiences. Over the last 20 years she has become established as one of the greatest jazz singers of her time. Working with top jazz musicians in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. In 2016 She was featured with bassist John Clayton’s group in a centennial tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. he Hughes Brothers, Dylan (bass, older) and Ian (guitar, taller) grew up in the middle of North Seattle’s competitive student jazz scene but they were mostly discouraged by all that noise and came up playing grunge and prog rock with garage bands instead. A love of instrumental music and the local jam session scene sprung from this. The brothers met current band members through these sessions and were inspired by the thriving instrumental music scene in Seattle to find their own sound. “Suave, melodious jazz funk that should appeal to fans of Chick Corea, Grant Green, Donald Byrd, and Ben Sidran.” -Dave Segal with “The Stranger”

“The musicianship and interplay of Freudian Slurp are impeccably tight, as are the arrangements and compositions the band comes through with, but they aren’t so complex and challenging that you can’t just sit back in your chair and bob your head along to their songs” – Northwest Music Scene (Get it?) shows a new direction for the band from it’s predecessor Edible Complex. After some lineup changes, and years of playing shows and festivals around the Northwest, the group’s sound has battle-hardened. The groove is tighter, the sounds are fuller. Slurp has both embraced a fully instrumental sound, and unleashed their early Grunge influences to create something much less restrained.

ocalist Melany Peterson grew up listening to Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Jerry Butler, Isaac Hayes, and Aretha Franklin. At the age of 12, Melany’s fledgling interest in singing took flight inside her hometown church in Charleston, SC where she would often be caught alone playing the piano and singing her favorite tunes. Melany’s singing took off, professionally, in 1982 with the Charleston Actors Theatre Society. First sharing her gift of song at the Garden Theatre in Charleston, SC., she then made a name for herself singing with the band Sea Breeze and by joining a gospel group, “Voices of Deliverance” which performed traditional spirituals and psalms. Today, this “Song Bird of the South” is the key vocalist of the Mel Peterson Collective, The Mel and Dre’ Show, Blush and The Mel Peterson Gospel Ensemble which performs a fusion of Contemporary-pop, Jazz standards, Gospel, and R & B classics. Dr. T. André Feagin serves as Director of Bands in the Department of Music at Central Washington University. In this position, he guides the educational and artistic vision of the band area and serves as administrator of the band program that includes the Wind

Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band, Wildcat Marching Band, and Basketball Band. In addition, Dr. Feagin guides the graduate wind band conducting program and serves as the conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the preeminent wind band at CWU. He serves as a member of the Leadership Cohort within the College of Arts and Humanities as well as a member of the diversity and inclusivity committee for the college. Within the department of music, he serves as a member of the music education and scholarship/ recruitment committees. In addition, he serves as co-chair of the P.A.C.T. committee, a group tasked with collaborating with faculty and students in the creation and dissemination of standards for climate excellence. Under his direction, the CWU Wind Ensemble has been invited as a featured ensemble at the 2022 CBDNA Western/Northwestern Division Conference.

he Ellensburg Big Band started as a dream and became a dream come true. The few remaining original members who started the group for fun in 2011 would have never in their wildest imaginations anticipated what this band would become. Eighteen musicians centered in Ellensburg travel from all over the state to rehearse and perform, have created a genuinely professional sound energized by a rare camaraderie and the sheer joy

of making good music with good friends. The majority of the current band are alums of one of the most outstanding college Jazz programs in the country, Central Washington University. They showcase swing, jazz, and classic traditional dance band from the 1940s and 1950’s and they’re back in the lineup for the 24th Jazz in the Valley, the Ellensburg Music Festival.
