The Membership Services Department The Membership Services Department works to assure the success of member businesses and organizations. Popular programs like Business After Hours, Bite of the Burg - a popular business showcase, ribbon cuttings, a luncheon speaker series, an e-bulletin and print newsletter, and coffee club help members compete and prosper. The department also oversees the Chamber web site – the primary portal for business information and inquiries in the county – and helps members with marketing and promotions.

T The Economic Development Department The Economic Development Department works with new and existing businesses to build a stronger economy and a thriving business climate. Economic Development includes raising community awareness, infrastructure improvements, attracting local investment, business advocacy, support for workforce development and working with business start ups and expansions. The Business Advocacy Department follows public policy and resource allocation decisions at the state, county and community levels. The department also coordinates the Government Affairs Committee and oversees the annual Legislative Day in Olympia, the 13th District Legislative Day and popular candidate forums.

The Tourism Department strengthens our local economies by promoting Kittitas County and its communities as travel and entertainment destinations. The department administers popular in-house events like Ellensburg Brewfest and Mountain Ale Festival and supports events and tourism-related programs developed by other entities as well. The Visitor Information Center is open year-round with advice and information about events, ticket sales, lodging, dining and other attractions. Ellensburg Located in the geographic heart of Washington State and ideally situated at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 82, Ellensburg is a distinctive community with a strong family environment, exceptional educational opportunities and a thriving business climate. Ellensburg’s rich history provides the backdrop to a progressive and outstanding quality of life. • Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, infuses the community with a rich variety of arts and performances as well as outstanding sports and a deep and specialized talent base.

Cle Elum Cle Elum, Kittitas County’s second largest community, commemorates its rich past as it embraces the future. • The combination of the discovery of coal and a fuelhungry railroad is attributed with naming Cle Elum, a Kittitas word meaning “swift water,” in 1886.

• Ellensburg’s surprisingly large National Historic downtown– built by town founders who envisioned a great city – today houses an eclectic mix of award-winning restaurants, pubs, shops, galleries and museums, along with a thriving Farmer’s Market. Don’t miss the Art Walk on the first Friday of each month.

• Early Cle Elum was a boomtown, and not for the faint of heart. Officially incorporated in 1902, tragedy struck in 1908 when two carloads of blasting powder exploded and killed nine people. Fire once again claimed parts of Cle Elum and more than 70 acres were destroyed in 1918, leveling 30 businesses and 205 homes. More than 1,800 people were left homeless.

• Given its location between the Cascade Mountains and the Columbia Plateau, Ellensburg is a recreational destination for much of the northwest. Our hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and skiing are legendary.

• Today, trail rides, outdoor barbeques, a public market and micro brews are only some of the varied activities that draw people to town. Cle Elum’s Pioneer Days, an annual Fourth of July celebration, is a “must do” for locals and visitors alike.

It’s easy to spend the day window shopping or enjoying an espresso while chatting with a friend or new acquaintance. • Cle Elum’s diverse geological setting offers prime recreational opportunities and two noteworthy museums: Carpenter House and the Cle Elum Historical Telephone Museum.

• Roslyn is home to The Brick, the oldest continuously operating tavern in Washington State. The Brick was built in 1889 and its flowing spittoon is still in use, though mostly for homemade boat races. • A favorite walk is the Coal Miner Trail that passes through Roslyn from Cle Elum to the town of Ronald. The trail is part of the old Northern Pacific Railroad line.

The rustic quirkiness of the mountain community of Roslyn made it the perfect setting for the hit television series “Northern Exposure.”

Kittitas is a small lower-valley town that sprang to life alongside the Milwaukee Road – the nickname for the old Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. A post office, general store, church and agricultural warehouses were built around the small depot, putting Kittitas on the map.

• Less than two hours from Seattle, Roslyn serves as a jumping off point for stellar outdoor recreation like camping, boating, hiking, snowmobiling and skiing. • The 15-acre Roslyn Cemetery is comprised of 26 plots segmented by lodge affiliation and nation of origin. At least 24 different nationalities are represented in nearly 5,000 grave sites. • Though Roslyn’s past was built on coal and logging, today it’s home to Suncadia, a planned master resort complete with luxury homes, championship golf courses and a thriving resort/conference center that attract visitors from around the West.

• Kittitas today is centered in agriculture. Farmlands ring the township and the shrub-steppe sageland that rises to the east of town is perfect for snow-free fall, winter and spring hikes. Rockhounds enjoy the trails through the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. • The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which follows the roadbed of the former Milwaukee Road, goes through Kittitas on its way to the border with Idaho. Paradise Found Kittitas county is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts Bordered by the rugged Cascade Mountains on one side and the mighty Columbia River on the other, Kittitas County’s diverse terrain is an outdoor enthusiast’s mecca and gives new meaning to “go outside and play.” And since Kittitas County has four distinct seasons, it offers a dizzying variety of outdoor pursuits.

Skiing, snowshoeing & snowmobiling: If snow is your passion then Kittitas County has what you need. Miles and miles of groomed snowmobile trails, picturesque forests and snow-capped mountain peaks beckon people to enjoy our pristine backcountry.

Camping: Kittitas County has campgrounds ranging from rustic to refined, from desert to deep alpine forest. If you are the rough-and-ready type you will find primitive campsites stretching from the Alpine Wilderness to the sun-baked shores of the Columbia River. Those requiring more luxurious amenities will find campgrounds made to accommodate their recreational vehicles.

Hiking and biking: While taking advantage of the county’s campsites, many chose to explore our extensive trail systems on foot or on bicycle. Kittitas County’s diverse terrain appeals to all experience levels. Here it’s possible to ski or snowmobile in the morning and enjoy a warm desert hike in the afternoon.

Kittitas County offers anglers unparalleled opportunities to become a part of a great fishing story. The Yakima River, which flows through the county, is one of the state’s only blue-ribbon catch-and-release rivers. Further to the east, the Columbia River provides sportsmen with the chance to land the big ones – salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and walleye are all up for grabs. Local shops and guides are available to help.

Water sports: With its reliably dry and sunny summer days, Kittitas County is perfect for playing in the water. Whether you water ski, canoe, kayak, raft or paddle an inner tube, our waterways are here to oblige. The reservoirs of the Upper County and the Columbia River offer great water skiing while the Yakima River is popular for rafting.

Kittitas County is home to four very different and challenging public golf courses including the Rope Rider and the Arnold Palmer-designed Prospector courses at Suncadia, Sun Country Golf Course near Cle Elum and the Ellensburg Golf and Country Club. All have their own distinct feel and offer outstanding views.

Horseback riding: With its cowboy past, it’s no surprise that Kittitas County is prime horse country. Our varied terrain offers exciting and different opportunities for riders, from the easy-going John Wayne Pioneer Trail to extreme alpine excursions. And rising near Roslyn is the expansive new Washington State Horse Park with trails, events and competition. Don’t worry if you don’t own a horse. We have a number of outfitters who can get you in the saddle.

Kittitas County Agriculture &

Renewable energy Agriculture & Renewable energy thriving in the “Land of Plenty” Agriculture has always been a part of Kittitas County. Cowboys driving herds to the markets of Puget Sound established land claims in the Valley and made cattle the first cash crop. • The lush, fertile ground of the Kittitas Valley continues to “grow good grass.” Historically ranchers used the grass to feed cattle but today’s hay industry exports high profit Timothy hay to Asia and the Middle East where it is a staple for thoroughbred race horses. The Valley also produces orchard grass, alfalfa and Sudan grass on nearly 200,000 acres with an annual value of more than $30 million. • Cattle ranching eventually succumbed to farming as the No. 1 cash crop; however, many cattle ranches are still operated today by second, third and even fourth-generation ranchers. • Fruit orchards are another healthy cash crop in Kittitas County. As technology continues to produce new varieties of apples and pears, demand for these crops continues to grow. Orchards are primarily located on the southern rim of the Valley.

The Kittitas Valley is green – and not just it pastures. The Valley is home to three major wind projects with more than 250 turbines as well as several solar arrays, making it one of the Northwest’s leaders in clean energy. • Puget Sound Energy’s Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, 16.5 miles east of Ellensburg, is the largest in the state. Its popular mountaintop visitor’s facility has a 360-degree view of the Kittitas Valley, Mount Rainier and the great Columbia Basin to the east. • In Ellensburg is the Community Renewable Park – a community-owned solar electric facility. After visiting the CRP, which is located in West Ellensburg Park, follow the path under I-90 to popular Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park.

Healthcare for the Community Kittitas Valley healthcare

Kittitas Valley Healthcare provides residents and visitors with exceptional healthcare. In 2011 and 2012, the hospital was named one of the Top 100 critical access hospitals in the United States (out of 1,300 hospitals). Continuing to build on its stellar performance, KVH recently welcomed new specialists in family practice, internal medicine and orthopedics. Academic Community

School Districts & Central Washington University provide quality education

Ellensburg School District With a student body of 3,000, the Ellensburg School District is the largest district in Kittitas County. It has a strong tradition of providing a well-rounded education within one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. Career and technology courses and alternative learning opportunities are offered along with outstanding music and choir programs and strong remediation programs. The district employs about 180 certified staff and 170 classified employees. Superintendent Dr. Paul Farris oversees Ellensburg High School, Morgan Middle School, Valley View Elementary, Mount Stuart Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Excel High School, the Discover Program and the Parent Partner Program. Cle Elum/Roslyn School District The Cle Elum/Roslyn School District includes Cle Elum High School, Walter Strom Middle School and Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School and are overseen by Superintendant Mark Flatau. District schools have been technologically-updated in recent years through the use of several grants. Students excel in smaller classroom sizes and are offered a variety of programs — including athletics — within their grade levels. Alternative education opportunities exist through the Swiftwater Learning Center where students are encouraged to be “self-directed learners” while achieving their goals and post high school career opportunities. Easton School District Easton School District is located west of Cle Elum near Snoqualmie Pass. The rural district is home to about 100 students grades kindergarten through 12, each of whom receives a high level of personal interaction with the district’s staff. Small class sizes and personalized attention along with the mountainous outdoor setting give students the opportunity to participate in a variety of curriculum including fly fishing, skiing, archery, geo-cashing and rock climbing. Thorp School District Thorp School District is immediately west of Ellensburg and has a combined junior/senior high school and elementary school all housed in one building. The district motto is “building skills and inspiring dreams.” The entire student body numbers around 170 and with 18 instructors,

Kittitas School District The Kittitas School District lies seven miles to the east of Ellensburg and is home to the 657 students grades K-12. Superintendent Monty Sabin and a five-person school board manage the district . The Kittitas School District enjoys a quiet pace of life while maintaining a variety of programs, classes, learning opportunities and curricular activities for its students. Damman Elementary School Rounding out school districts in Kittitas County is Damman Elementary School. This two-room schoolhouse harkens back to the days of old and stands just outside Ellensburg city limits. Today 30 to 40 students are split between two teachers in this kindergarten through fifth grade school. The school itself was built in 1890. It still retains its charm and rural roots while teaching and support staff strive to give students a personalized education.

Central Washington University Central Washington University is Ellensburg’s academic and cultural cornerstone. For more than 120 years the partnership has thrived for mutual growth and support. • CWU offers cultural enrichment through its performing arts, visual arts, concerts, sporting events and guest speaker programs. • Central’s alumni include a current 4-star general, the founder of Bowflex/Nautilus, well-known actors and the CEO’s of major corporations. • Central’s Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute is one of two of its kind in the world and was made famous by the first chimp to learn human sign language, Washoe. Chimposiums – or educational workshops – are offered each weekend in March through November. • With over 9,000 students, Central offers more than 100 majors and several pre-profession programs including dentistry, dietetics, engineering, law, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical education and veterinary sciences. • The university’s sports programs are a strong draw for students and have produced nationally-known athletes like Jon Kitna and Mike Reilly. • The university’s World Wine Program, taught by internationally-recognized instructor Amy Mumma, offers a variety of specialized certificates and a B.S. in Global Wine Studies.
