Dick and Jane’s Spot www.reflectorart.com/ First Avenue and Pearl Street, Ellensburg
Local artists Jane Orleman and her late husband, Dick Elliott, have spent more than 35 years amassing an eclectic collection of artwork from more than 40 Northwest artists in their home and yard at First Avenue and Pearl Street. Nearly every post and fence is covered with highway reflectors, 10,000 bottle caps, colored glass bottles and bicycle wheels. The pieces in the yard are ever changing — as old pieces decay, new ones are added. Parking is available in a public lot on the north side of the home.

“The Bull” statue is a well loved fixture in downtown Ellensburg, but it wasn’t always popular. Controversy Dalton/Daily Record over the statue by the late artist Richard Beyer in downtown Ellensburg sparked some 80 letters to the editor in the 1980s. Beyer and his supporters overcame concerns about the original title of the piece (“The Cowboy”) and its anatomical correctness to have it placed at Rotary Pavilion. Today, you can share your photos with the Bull on his Facebook page.

There’s a traditional Japanese garden in the center of Central Washington University’s campus. The Donald L. Garrity Japanese Garden, named after a former university president, features traditional Japanese plants along with a water feature and sand garden.

This pioneer farm east of Ellensburg was homesteaded by the Olmstead family for 100 years before it was donated to the state of Washington. Most of the original buildings are still intact, including the original cabin and farmhouse. Volunteers help keep up the historic gardens, and the park plays host to a threshing bee and antique equipment show each September.

Good places to fly a kite in Ellensburg include the North Alder Street Park, the practice fields at Central Washington University, the IOOF Cemetery on Brick Road, Rotary Park and Mount Stuart Elementary School. Try the Cle Elum-Roslyn school fields in the Upper County.

Fresh picks!
It’s A way of life While Kittitas County is known for Timothy Hay and cattle, it also has a thriving 4-H program, two popular farmers markets and a number of sustainable organic farms.
Ellensburg residents come together each week in the summer to visit with neighbors and peruse locally grown produce at the Kittitas County Farmers Market. The market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays on Fourth Avenue between Pearl and Ruby streets downtown. It runs from May through October. Market-goers often are treated to live musical performances and once a year, in the fall, the market is invaded by street performers for Buskers in the Burg. In the Upper County, the Roslyn Farmers Market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays from mid-June through mid-September on Pennsylvania Avenue. It features an array of fruit, vegetables, flowers, baked goods and crafts, and often includes live music.
Other places to get a taste of rural life: • The Kittitas County Fair over Labor Day weekend is a good place to see local 4-Hers proudly displaying their animals and to learn about the county’s rural roots. • Farms in the county that raise sustainable produce and livestock for sale include Parke Creek Farm, Fuzzy Rhino Organic Farm, Windy N Ranch, River Farm Organic Produce and Green Bow Farm. Kittitas Valley Greenhouse raises heirloom tomatoes. For an expanded list of farms around Kittitas County please visit www. kittitascountychamber.com. • Farm events: Local businesses that open their farms in the fall for harvest activities:
Better Life Natural Foods, Inc. Our family serving yours since 1977
Dusty’s Nursery: Hosts a fall festival each year in October. Suncadia: The resort hosts a harvest festival at the historic Nelson Dairy Farm in October with a straw maze and wagon rides.
Delana K. Carr, RD Manager
Anderson Family Farm: The farm raises goats, and uses the milk for lotion, soap and other beauty products. The farm hosts a fall festival in October. Huffman Farms: Offers a u-pick pumpkin patch and hayrides in October.

a growing industry Savor a crisp Chardonnay, a hoppy craft beer or fine whiskey during your next visit to Kittitas County. The number of options for tasting wine, beer and spirits has grown over the past few years, aided by a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
Breweries include Iron Horse Brewery in Ellensburg with a pub on Main Street, Colockum Craft Brewing on Main Street in Kittitas, the Roslyn Brewing Co. on Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn and DruBru at Snoqualmie Pass. The Ellensburg Distillery operates by appointment. Two big beer tasting events happen each year — the WinterHop BrewFest in January, which brings breweries from around the region to venues in downtown Ellensburg, and the Mountain Ale Festival in Roslyn in early October. Both are popular with locals and visitors alike. For more information, contact the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce. As for wine, Kittitas Valley falls in the western-most part of the Columbia Valley Appellation. Varietal grown or produced in the Kittitas Valley include Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Reisling, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Muscat Ottonel and Sauvignon Blanc. The Art of Wine event in May at the Kittitas Valley Event Center at the fairgrounds corresponds with the National Western Art Show, and allows patrons to sample vintages not yet available to the general public. Downtown art galleries also host special wine tasting events during Jazz in the Valley in July. Central Washington University offers a bachelor’s degree in global wine studies and a craft beer certificate.

A Strong connection Kittitas County residents maintain a strong connection to their past, and a variety of museums and historic attractions celebrate the area’s history.
As early as the 1700s, the Psch-wan-wap-pams, forerunners of the contemporary Yakama Nation, lived along the Yakima River and Kittitas Valley. The tribes who inhabited the valley were known as the Kittitas or Upper Yakima Indians. During the spring, the Kittitas Valley was one of only a handful of valleys in the state where tribes could dig for roots such as camas (also known as kamas or quamash) and kouse, both of which were staples in the Indian diet. As a result, the Kittitas Valley was a traditional gathering place for tribes east of the Cascades. By the 1860s, the first white settlers began to arrive, and several cattle ranchers established land claims. The first wheat crop was planted in 1868. Our roots!
William Bud Wilson built the first log cabin in 1868 where Ellensburg now stands, and AJ Splawn and Ben Burch moved a log house to a spot nearby so they could open a store in 1870. In 1872, John A. Shoudy bought the store, called Robbers Roost, and 160 acres of land. Ellensburg was named after his wife, Mary Ellen in 1875. A phoenix painted on the side of the Davidson building in downtown Ellensburg symbolizes the community’s rise from the ashes after a fire destroyed most of downtown in 1889. At the time, Ellensburg was in the running to be the state capital, a title which went to Olympia instead. Meanwhile, the discovery of coal in Roslyn sparked a migration of immigrants from all over Europe to come work in the mines. Roslyn’s history has followed a series of booms and busts. Between the late 1800s and 1910, the population of Roslyn swelled from a few hundred to more than 3,000 — its all-time high. The last coal mines shut down in 1963, and today the population is just under 1,000.
The coal mines also played a big role in the community of Cle Elum. Both Roslyn and Cle Elum have strong ethnic ties that go back generations, and that heritage is celebrated throughout the year at special dinners, a Croatian Picnic, Coal Miners Days and other yearly festivals.

The cemeteries reflect a rich ethnic mix that came to the area to work in the coal mines. At least 24 nationalities are represented within the nearly 5,000 graves. The cemeteries were listed on the National Historic Register in 1978.

Beauty is everywhere Taking a drive anywhere in Kittitas County is sure to live up to expectations. Enjoy the leaves changing colors in the fall and the livestock grazing in the spring. In the summer, roll down that window and let the fresh rural air cool you off. Scenery can be spectacular in the winter too with the surrounding hills covered in snow.
Yakima River Canyon Drive the 22-mile Yakima River Canyon Highway (state Route 821) southeast of Ellensburg to Selah, and you might catch a glimpse of big horn sheep, deer or bald eagles. Any time of year, you’ll view stunning scenery and interesting geology. Turn around at Selah and come back through again and you’ll see things differently the other direction. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management offers recreation areas, restrooms, hiking trails and campsites along the highway. The river offers world-class fly fishing and is popular with floaters during the summer.
Barn quilt trail Starting in 2012, a group of local volunteers made it their mission to set up a self-guided route of folk-art murals on barns around Kittitas County. They quickly succeed — by the end of 2014, there were more than 100 murals on area barns. Visitors will be able to spot some of the quilt squares at the Kittitas County fairgrounds and in downtown Ellensburg, but there also are several scenic routes you can take to find the quilt squares. The county’s arid climate has preserved old barns, and many are still in use today for hay and livestock. Gary Fausset

Teanaway Road
If you are looking for a scenic alternative to the traffic on Interstate 90, try state Route 10, which runs from Ellensburg to Cle Elum. The route follows the Yakima River. You’ll see picturesque farmland, wind turbines and people fishing and floating. It’s particularly scenic drive in September and October when the leaves begin to change color.
The Teanaway Road offers dazzling views of the Teanaway River and valley. Spring comes early to the area, and trees changing colors during the fall are spectacular. The area offers camping, hiking, fishing, horseback riding and other opportunities to explore the backcountry. The picturesque Swauk-Teanaway Grange on Ballard Hill Road offers a number of activities throughout the year, including a popular hunters breakfast, bluegrass concerts and a holiday bazaar. While the paved portion of the Teanaway Road is in good condition, high-clearance vehicles are advised for the unpaved portion of the road about 15 miles into the valley.
Roslyn to Salmon la Sac Drive along state Route 903 north of Roslyn for tremendous views of jagged Cascade peaks, the Cle Elum River and quiet mountain lakes. The paved route ends at Salmon la Sac, which has 67 camp sites and a free day-use picnic area nestled between the Cle Elum and Cooper rivers. The area is popular for camping, hiking, boating, cross-country skiing, berry picking, kayaking, picnicking and more. The Gallagher trailhead near the Salmon la Sac area provides a popular motorized off-road vehicle area. Horses can be lodged in the corrals at the Forest Service’s Cayuse Horse Camp, near the Salmon la Sac guard station. The road is plowed all the way to Salmon la Sac in the winter.
Vantage Highway The old Vantage Highway from Ellensburg to Vantage travels through rolling farmland to a dramatic shrub steppe landscape. It travels past the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, which is open to the public, and ends near Ginkgo Petrified Forest Park at the Columbia River.

Coal Mines Trail, Cle Elum to Ronald This trail runs from Cle Elum to Roslyn and Ronald, and was established in 1994 in dedication to the pioneers who first settled in this area. A walk on the trail affords visitors a first-hand look at the coal-mining heritage through the remains of Roslyn’s mines, at the railroad depot site and barn, and at Powder House Road where dynamite was stored. The flat, easy trail is open to walkers, horses, bicyclists, cross-country skiers and snowmobiles. Mines in Roslyn operated from the late 1880s to 1963.
Gingko Petrified Forest State Park, Vantage The Trees of Stone interpretive trailhead, located two miles west of the Gingko Petrified Forest State Park interpretive center in Vantage, guides you through an ancient fossil bed with nearly two-dozen petrified logs exposed along this one-mile loop trail. It is a six-mile roundtrip hike from the trail head to the top and back. There are two main trails to the top, the Westburg Trail, named after a popular Ellensburg coach, and the

The Double Loop Cemetery Road Ride is about half as long, but takes a ďŹ gure-8 route from West Ellensburg Park to and through Thorp past the High Valley cemetery. For great views of countryside with some elevation change, try the Badger Pocket Loop, a 42-mile ride that takes riders into Ellensburg and Kittitas farmland. A similar route, the Look Loop, goes east from Ellensburg, north of Kittitas, and back. For more details on each route, go to centralwashingtoncolor.com.
Mountain biking The Lower Taneum Ridge provides a ride along a short stretch of creek, a climb to the top and a drop to the parking area. The trailhead starts at the Taneum Junction campground.
Easton and the John Wayne Pioneer Trail are good places to take a spin in the snow.

The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which follows the old roadbed of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railroads, is another popular mountain biking spot. The county offers hundreds of miles of groomed trails, and some popular options include Blewett Pass on Highway 97, Salmon la Sac north of Roslyn and the Ronald and Easton areas. The Summit at Snoqualmie and Suncadia offer a variety of winter recreation options for a variety of skill levels.
Snowmobiling Flocks of visitors journey to Kittitas County each winter, but few activities draw more outdoors enthusiasts to the area than snowmobiling. The county offers 2,300 square miles of terrain to explore and 600 miles of groomed trails. Riders are treated to spectacular views of jagged peaks and wooded valleys. A number of sno-parks are available for use, and more information about specific locales can be found on the Washington State Parks website. Be sure to check the state’s avalanche hotline at 206-526-6677 before heading out. Rich Villacres

Downhill skiers and snowboarders can find their fill of excitement at the Summit at Snoqualmie ski area, about 50 miles from Ellensburg. Beginning skiers can visit Summit West to acquire skills, intermediate skiers can go to Summit East, and those who desire advance runs can hit Alpental. Summit Central, the most popular destination, boasts something for everyone.
Several shops in the area offer gear rentals, and visitors can find more information about snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing and other activities by checking in at the Cle Elum Ranger Station at 803 W. Second St. in Cle Elum. The U.S. Forest Service or the visitor center offers guided snowshoe hikes at Snoqualmie Pass in the winter. The visitor information center at Snoqualmie Pass can be reached at 425-434-6111.
In addition to the ski runs, The Summit at Snoqualmie also has multiple options for snowboarders. Summit Central has a superpipe and an award-winning top-tobottom terrain park, and Greenhorn Acres provides a scaled-down terrain park that allows boarders to improve their skills.

Other outdoor pursuits Activities on and off the water await. Fishing Kittitas County caters to every fishing enthusiast in the family from the kid with his first rod and reel to the adult with the latest state-ofthe-art fly fishing gear. The Yakima River is a year-round fly-fishing destination. It is a catchand-release river for wild trout. There are multiple fly fishing gear and guide services in the county, including Red’s Flyshop, Troutwater, The Evening Hatch and Worley-Bugger Fly Co. The Columbia River on the eastern edge of the county is also a prime spot for sturgeon, walleye, salmon and steelhead. In addition to the rivers and streams, the county is dotted with lakes. Lake fishing opportunities begin at Snoqualmie Pass with Keechelus and Kachess and continue through the lower valley. In the lower county, Mattoon Lake and Fiorito Lake are popular destinations, particularly for families with children. Many of the ponds are stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife and there are derbies and events at the lakes in the spring and summer. For those looking for fishing off the beaten track there are a multitude of lakes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.
Late winter is prime time for viewing bald eagles in Kittitas County.
Sheriff ’s Office marine patrol at 509-925-8534 to find out current river conditions and problem spots.
The best place to view bald eagles is northeast of Ellensburg in the Fairview and Naneum areas during calving season from February through late April. In addition to the late winter/spring visits, bald eagles also can be found here in the fall feeding on salmon.
The nonprofit Kittitas County Field and Stream Club has produced a recreational users’ map of the Yakima River, and it is valuable for those boating, floating or rafting the river. The map, in a booklet form, is sold by a number of Kittitas County area retailers, including Mountain High Sports in Ellensburg, 509-925-4626.
The Umtanum Creek Trail in the Yakima River Canyon is a good location to find golden eagles and other birds.
Boating and water sports
Visitors are invited to Kittitas County Audubon Society’s First Saturday Birdwalk each month. Meet at 8 a.m. at the parking lot to Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park in Ellensburg, located on Umptanum Road where the bridge crosses the Yakima River. Trip leaders provide the information and answer any questions, and trips happen rain or shine. Bring a pair of binoculars and dress for the weather.
The area’s many lakes and rivers offer exciting boating, kayaking and, in designated areas, jet skiing areas.
Floating Floating the Yakima through the Yakima River Canyon is an awe-inspiring adventure. The canyon features massive and weathered basalt cliffs, rising above the river, and rolling, high shrub-steppe hills. The stretch of river southeast of Ellensburg from Ringer Loop Road to the Roza Recreational Site sees the most float and raft traffic when temperatures rise in Central Washington. Although a Yakima River float trip provides spectacular scenic views and wildlife viewing, it can be dangerous for those who don’t pay attention to common sense safety practices, recreational rules and hazardous river sites. Well before planning a trip, call the Kittitas County

Birding
The Columbia River east of Ellensburg is a favorite in the summer with boaters, jet skiers and water skiers. Multiple boat launches are available in the Vantage area. The Roza Recreation area between Yakima and Ellensburg on the Yakima Canyon is a good spot for boating and water sports. Motorized vessels are permitted from the Roza boat launch down to the Roza dam. Upstream from the launch is limited to non-motorized boats only. Lake Cle Elum eight miles northwest of Cle Elum is a good spot for water sports. Boat launch sites are available. Lake Easton is a popular destination for fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding during the summer.
Wildlife viewing For those who are patient, viewing wildlife in Kittitas County is possible just about any time of the year. From late December through as late as early April, state Fish and Wildlife Department personnel daily provide

Golfing Kittitas County is a great place for golf in the spring, summer and fall. • Suncadia resort Located just west of Cle Elum on the eastern slopes of the Cascades, Suncadia resort has two public and one private 18-hole course. The public Prospector course offers 7,100 yards of championship golf, and it was named one of the best new public courses by Golf Digest magazine in 2006. Rope Rider is a public course that opened in August 2011 and was built along the site of historic Roslyn mines. A practice range, private instruction, junior golf, group instruction and golf clinics are available for players of all ages and skill levels. Horseback riding Saddle up and head ‘em on out. Horseback riding is a way of life in Kittitas County, and there are ample places for backcountry and trail adventures.
Here are some suggestions from local experts for good, entry-level trail rides in Kittitas County: Naneum Canyon: Access to this area is at the end of Naneum Road. There’s parking and a locked gate at the end. Riders can either take the high road or low road. The high road is a logging road that’s safe with good visibility. The two roads intersect after several miles and offer access to Naneum Ridge, Table Mountain and Lion Rock, with a bunch of trails off that nexus. “There’s a lot of connectivity from one ridge to another,” said Heather Seibert of the Alpine Lakes Trail Riders. Pete Lake: This trail is in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It’s a busy trail in summer with hikers, horses and stock traffic, but offers beautiful views and is a jumping off point to Waptus Lake, the Pacific Crest Trail or a day ride and picnic. It’s safe and well maintained. From Roslyn, take state Route 903 north. Continue on Salmon La Sac Road for another 9.2 miles. Then take a left on Forest Road 46 and follow for 4.7 miles. Take a right on Forest Road 4616 and follow for about a half a mile to the turn off on Road 113. Travel about 1 mile to trailhead. Northwest Forest pass needed. Lion Rock and the Ken Wilcox Horse Camp: at the top of Blewett Pass, is popular with backcountry riders around the state. The Table Mountain Fire burned through the area in 2012, but Back Country Horsemen volunteers have done significant work to get it back into shape. It provides access to 42 miles to trails, said Jason Ridlon, of the Back Country Horsemen.
Flying Horseshoe Ranch
Directions: From summit of Blewett Pass on Highway 97, 24 miles northeast of Cle Elum, travel south about four miles on Forest Road 9716 to the junction with Road 9712. Follow Road 9712 for about 4 miles to the campground. The road can be rough, but grading work is planned this summer.
Unionville Ranch
Seibert and Ridlon also suggest Boylston Canyon, the Elk Heights sno-park, Indian Camp in the Teanaway Community Forest, Joe Watt Canyon, BBQ Flats and the Pacific Crest Trail headed south from the Snoqualmie Pass trailhead as other good options for trail riders. For more information on U.S. Forest Service trails and camping, contact the Cle Elum Ranger District. Recreation managers for the Department of Natural Resources in Ellensburg also can provide information. Back Country Horsemen of Washington puts on a Rendezvous in March at the Kittitas County Event Center at the fairgrounds. The event includes speakers and clinicians, a used tack and gear sale and other activities.

Ellensburg Ellensburg is a rodeo city and a college town. It’s an art and music destination with easy access to the outdoors. And it’s a renewable energy leader with an agricultural foundation.
On the north side of town is Central Washington University, which first opened its doors as the Washington State Normal School in 1891, two years after Washington became a state. The normal school became Central Washington College of Education in 1937, Central Washington State College in 1961, and Central Washington University in 1977. About 9,000 students attend CWU’s Ellensburg campus. Its nearly year-round offerings of events and activities bring vibrancy to the town. Ellensburg boasts a successful lineup of festivals and community events year round that bring in tourists, entertain the locals and celebrate the town’s history, including Spirit of the West, Dachshunds on Parade, Jazz in the Valley and Buskers in the Burg. The city also is a leader in renewable energy. Wind farms are scattered throughout the valley, and a community solar electric project gives Ellensburg residents an opportunity to invest in locally produced energy and receive a credit on their electric bill in return.
Central Washington University With more than 9,000 students and 1,500 employees in Ellensburg, Central Washington University offers a constantly churning array of activities. The school hosts multiple plays, concerts, guest speakers, movie screenings, sporting events and art exhibits. For information about tours, activities and parking, stop at the Welcome Center on University Way and Pearl Street. The nexus for much of the excitement on campus happens in the
See a full calendar of the many (and often free) events at the university at www.cwu.edu.
Historic downtown Ellensburg’s historic downtown is a destination that offers small-town charm, a vibrant history and a diverse collection of shops, restaurants and galleries. Much of downtown was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1889 and the community quickly rebuilt. As a reminder, a mural on the side of the Davidson building on Pearl Street depicts a phoenix rising from the ashes. Downtown hosts a number of events throughout the year, and is a popular place for concerts, wine tasting, yoga classes, book club meetings and more. The Kittitas County Farmers Market is held each Saturday morning on Fourth Avenue during the summer. Stop by the Kittitas County Historical Museum for more information about local history, or pick up information for a self-guided walking tour at the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce.
Rodeo and fair The Ellensburg Rodeo Arena and the annual Ellensburg Rodeo attract champion cowboys and thousands of fans every Labor Day weekend. The rodeo is paired each year with the Kittitas County Fair. The Ellensburg Rodeo is one of the Top 25 PRCA rodeos and host to the Xtreme Bulls Tour finale. The fast-paced, bull-riding only competition showcases the top cowboys and bovine athletes in the world. The fair also offers a plethora of entertainment options for all ages to enjoy, as well as exhibits ranging from
photography to hand-crafted goods. 4-H and FFA members show their livestock throughout the weekend as well. www.ellensburgrodeo.com, 509-962-7831 or 800-637-2444

Kittitas The city of Kittitas, a few miles east of Ellensburg, keeps its attractive, small-town lifestyle very much alive.
The population of Kittitas is estimated at more than 1,450 by the state and is slowly growing. Kittitas was founded as part of the westward expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroads. The community was established in 1889 and was incorporated as a city within the state of Washington in 1931. The $1.4 million project to remodel, expand and update Kittitas City Hall and its fire station was formally completed in 2011. New, friendly businesses have been established in the past two years in downtown and at the Exit 115 interchange area to Interstate 90, including restaurants, taverns and others.
Olmstead Place State Park Olmstead Place State Park is a 217-acre day-use park that features picnic space, beautiful gardens, walking trails and a small museum. The 217-acre farm has two houses: a farmhouse and a smaller cabin. Samuel Olmstead

and his family moved to the site in 1875, the same year Ellensburg was platted. The park hosts a popular threshing bee each September, and is at 921 N. Ferguson Road, about three miles west of Kittitas.
Liberty The 17-acre town site of Liberty, more than 10 miles northeast of Cle Elum off U.S. Highway 97 and along Liberty Road, once was a rip-roarin’ gold mining town in the late 1890s. Several hundred people came and went in a year’s time with hopes to strike it rich, although perhaps only 200 lived there permanently. The population is much smaller now.
There’s a community information kiosk with photos of old-time gold strikes and nuggets. Nearby is the old fire hall that’s always open with an exhibit of historic photos of life in Liberty and information about local hard-rock mining. There are still gold-mining claims in the area about 20 miles northwest of Ellensburg that are worked off-and-on by locals and out-of-towners. Visitors can pan for gold, but must be careful not to trespass on private property or a claim.
Thorp Although the rural community of Thorp northwest of Ellensburg provides a mix of farm and ranch lands, quiet country homes with accompanying

acreage, and small niche agricultural operations including organic farms.
In the past decade, the Thorp area also has attracted residents who are pursuing the visual arts: painting, sculpting and other artistic expressions. Thorp Community Day, held the first full weekend in October, provides a fun, family event for the community. In the past, the event has featured a grand parade, market and carnival.
Thorp Mill The Thorp Mill dates to 1883, and has been maintained it was when it stopped operating in 1946 by the nonprofit Thorp Mill Town Historical Preservation Society. For visitors, there are self-guided outdoor tours available year-round and guided indoor tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A stream provided power to the mill, and the nearby pond provided ice blocks used to chill produce packed into trains heading for cities. It also offered locals a chance to go ice skating. The mill, and the small community of Thorp, became a gathering place for area farmers who brought their grain to the mill. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and restoration work went into high gear in the late 1980s and through the early 1990s.

Kittitas County offers a free boat launch and docks at Vantage.
The community of Vantage sits on a scenic bluff overlooking the Columbia River about 28 miles east of Ellensburg off Interstate 90.
The Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Center features displays on the geological history of the area as well as information on ancient local Native American culture. The center includes Wanapum tribe petrogylphs. The Wanapum tribe lived along the Columbia River. Petrified wood was discovered in the region in the early 1930s, leading to the creation of the park. A nearby upland trail offers an up-close look at an ancient fossil bed.
A primary attraction is the Wanapum Recreational Site, operated by State Parks, just south of Vantage. Wanapum has a day-use beach, picnic facilities, overnight camping and RV parking sites, and a boat launch. Farther south, Grant County Public Utility District, in cooperation with state parks, operates the Getty’s Cove day-use park for weekends only. Won’t you be our neighbor? The first organized ski association west of Denver is said to have originated in Cle Elum. Today, skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers still pass through town on their way to nearby Snoqualmie Pass or the backcountry of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. In the summertime, the town plays host to anglers, hikers, bikers and outdoor enthusiasts of nearly every variety. The historic Carpenter House offers visitors a glimpse at life in early 20th century Cle Elum. The Historical Society also operates Cle Elum’s telephone museum, which documents the switch from manual phone service to automatic dialing. Coffee houses, restaurants and shops are spread throughout the streets of downtown Cle Elum. Some of the most popular draws include Owens Meat, a 100plus year old meat market, Glondo’s Sausage Co., an old world-style Italian market, and the Cle Elum Bakery.
Teanaway Spring usually arrives in the Teanaway Basin earlier than other parts of the Cle Elum Ranger District, says Forest Service public information officer Nancy Jones. That prompt snow melt makes the Teanaway popular with early season visitors to the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest. But spring, summer and fall are good times to enjoy trails like Stafford Creek or the Miller Peak to Bear Creek Loop and camping at the Beverly campground. Wildflowers often begin to bloom in the area’s lower elevations as early as mid-May, when trails in the Bean Creek and Beverly basins become popular for hiking and wildflower viewing. The flowers last through about August, moving higher in elevation as the snow line rises. The area is popular with horseback riders, and ridgetop trails offer breathtaking views of the Stuart and Enchantment mountain ranges.
Our friendly staff is here to welcome you to Meadows Place.
In the wintertime, the Teanaway lures snowmobilers, snowshoers and backcountry skiers.

Most trailheads in the Teanaway require a Northwest Forest Pass that can be purchased ahead of time at the ranger station in Cle Elum or the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce office. Jones suggests that visitors to the Teanaway check road conditions before venturing out.

Rail Foundation. In 2006, they reopened the depot.
South Cle Elum grew up around the Milwaukee Rail Depot, while its counterpart to the north developed along the Great Northern Railroad. The process formed two distinct towns separated by a river.
There’s a barbecue restaurant inside the depot called Smokey’s BBQ. There’s also an unusual bed and breakfast on site. The Iron Horse B&B allows people to stay in old railroad cars and immerse themselves in Milwaukee line history.
The depot and substation have National Historic Landmark status.
The railroad dominated life in early South Cle Elum, and long-time residents recall the town’s train depot as a lively place, filled with railroad workers on layovers and people constantly coming and going. About 500 residents live in South Cle Elum, and the town has a city hall, a park and baseball fields.
The depot area also provides access to the Iron Horse State Park and John Wayne Pioneer Trail.

population and supporting research. It is sponsored in part by the Yakima Nation and Bonneville Power Administration. Visitors can see the facility from a sheltered viewing area — as Lou Goldsmith, a volunteer host from San Antonio, puts it, “a bird’s eye view of what’s happening.” It is a good way to learn about the salmon’s three- to four-year migration. The hatchery is open for tours in the summer. Call 509-674-3701 for more information.
Roslyn Roslyn started as a coal mining settlement in the late 1800s. Today, it is a well-preserved historic town with plenty of artists, small businesses and community volunteers.
Summer is busy with parades, picnics and parties. The Roslyn Farmers Market runs June to September on Sundays.
Roslyn might look familiar — it was the town of Cicely, Alaska, in the 1990s television show “Northern Exposure.” It also was featured in the 1979 film “The Runner Stumbles” with Dick Van Dyke. More recently, it was featured in an Amazon.com production of “The Man in the High Castle,” based on a 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick. The town is bordered by a 300-acre, city-owned forest. Miles of nonmotorized trails wind through the mixed forest of pines and firs and connect with the nearby Coal Mines Trail, a five-mile railroad easement between Cle Elum and Ronald. The tall trees in the forest hide slag heaps and remnants of mining infrastructure. Other destinations include the Brick Saloon, which is the oldest continuously operating bar in the state, the Roslyn Theatre, and the NWI Building.
NWI building The NWI building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn was the company store for the Northwest Improvement Co. coal mines for decades. Today it has a small visitors center and several businesses, each providing shoppers with unique and handcrafted products and services.

In winter, state Route 903 is plowed all the way to Salmon la Sac, and snowmobilers flock to the area to ride both groomed trails and steep slopes.
The park’s location also allows for snowy winter-sport opportunities. A sno-park permit is required from Nov. 15 through April 30 for day use and winter camping.
Lake Cle Elum
John Wayne Trail/Iron Horse State Park
Lake Cle Elum is seven miles northwest of Cle Elum. Fishing is open year round, with a lake trout fishery and burbot. There is a U.S. Forest Service boat launch and camping facilities at the lake, and the spot is a popular place for picnicking and swimming during the summer.
Lake Easton State Park The 516-acre Lake Easton State Park is a year-round destination for visitors. The park has beautiful mountain views and hiking trails to explore in the summer and cross-country and snowmobiling trails to enjoy in the winter. The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding during the summer. The campground is full most weekends and the day-use parking lot fills up on sunny days. Camping reservations are recommended.
What was once the path of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad is now 110 miles of trail that spans from West of the Cascades at Cedar Falls east through Kittitas County to the Columbia River. The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, or Iron Horse State Park, is open year round for day use and is ideal for walking, biking, horseback riding and rock climbing in the summer months and for cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing in the winter months. The railroad operated from 1908 to 1980, closing after it went bankrupt, according to the Washington State Parks department. Washington’s Department of Natural Resources acquired the property and turned it over to Washington State Parks. A Discover Pass is required to park at many of the trailheads. There are multiple access points to Iron Horse State Park, including several in Upper Kittitas County where some

The closest trailhead to the Snoqualmie Tunnel is at Hyak, Exit 54 on Interstate 90. The tunnel, which is more than two miles long, was closed for more than two years in 2009 for repairs. It reopened in July 2011.
