a land of contrasts From the mighty Columbia River to the snow-capped Cascade Mountains, Kittitas County is a premier destination for outdoor adventure, sunshine and unique cultural offerings. In a single day, you can fly fish the Yakima River, take in a jazz concert at Central Washington University and visit one of historic downtown Ellensburg's wine shops. Or you might want to explore Roslyn's mining history and hike in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. There's boating the Columbia River near Vantage, snowmobile trails near Cle Elum and Roslyn and all kinds of offerings at Suncadia resort. We have plenty of places for horseback riding, hunting and shopping.

Join us for an adventure you won't forget! For more information and detailed maps, go to www.centralwashingtoncolor.com and www.myellensburg.com.

Off the Beaten PATH

OFFPath

the Beaten

There’s plenty to discover in Kittitas County. Here are some suggestions that are off the beaten path:

1

Telephone museum 221 E. First Street Cle Elum

Cle Elum was one of the last cities in the country to use a manual telephone switchboard, and museum displays cover the history of telephone technology from 1901 to 1970. The museum has several switchboards dating back to the early 1900s, and telephones kids can try. The museum is open every day except Thursday from Memorial Day until Labor Day from noon to 4 p.m.

3

Japanese Garden CWU campus Ellensburg

There’s a traditional Japanese garden in the center of Central Washington University’s campus. The Donald L. Garrity Japanese Garden is named after a former university president. The garden has a karesansui, which consists of sand textured with repeating and concentric lines around rocks. Several of the oriental trees in the Japanese Garden were donated by Japanese government officials and Kittitas County’s sister community in Japan, Sanda City. 14

2

Jensen Cabin econd Street and Utah Avenue S Roslyn

The oldest building in Roslyn is an unassuming cabin that was built in 1885. The Jensen Cabin originally belonged to Nez “Cayuse” Jensen, an early prospector and one of the area’s first coal exporters. While the cabin is closed to the public because of safety concerns, the Roslyn Museum provides excellent educational displays on the town’s early history.

4

Running water spittoon The Brick tavern 100 W. Pennsylvania Avenue • Roslyn

The Brick Saloon of Roslyn, circa 1889, is not only a historic structure in its own right but also is the showcase of vintage interior fixtures, including a 100-year-old back bar made in England and a 23-footlong running-water spittoon. John Buffo and Peter Giovanni, original business owners, installed a gutter-like metal trough along the bottom of the bar that swishes away spit with running water. This, they believed, was much better than accumulating saliva and phlegm in an upright metal spittoon. The running-water spittoon is used by The Brick for its annual Indoor Running Water Spittoon Boat Races and Regatta in early March when small model boats are raced along the length of swishing spittoon.

Red Top and Thorp mountains Kittitas County still has two U.S. Forest Service fire lookouts. One, on top of Red Top Mountain, is staffed by volunteers throughout the summer. The other, on top of Thorp Mountain, isn’t staffed, but Forest Service personnel are occasionally sent to the lookout during times of high fire risk. For more on the trails to the lookouts, go the Washington Trails Association website — www.wta.org.

“The Bull”

Chestnut & Fifth Avenue Ellensburg The castle on Third Avenue has been one of Ellensburg’s most recognizable buildings since it was built in 1889. It was constructed with the intention of making it the governor’s mansion when Ellensburg was one of the sites in the running for the state capital. Today, the building is rented out as apartments.

8

“The Bull” statue is a well loved fixture in downtown Ellensburg, but it wasn’t always popular. Controversy over the statue by the late artist Richard Beyer in downtown Ellensburg sparked some 80 letters to the editor to the Daily Record in the 1980s. Beyer and his supporters overcame concerns about the original title of the piece (“The Cowboy”) and its anatomical correctness to have it placed at Rotary Pavilion.

Blue agates found near Ellensburg have been an interest of collectors since 1930, and today they are often called “Ellensburg blues.” The Kittitas County Historical Museum has a 6 pound 10 ounce Ellensburg blue agate on display. Tunnels along the Iron Horse Trail in Kittitas County are relics of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Today they are a draw for cyclists and other recreationists. The crown jewel is the Snoqualmie Tunnel, a 2.3-mile-long pathway underneath the pass which reopened to the public in 2011 after repairs.

4 Dick and Jane’s Spot Local artists Jane Orleman and her late husband, Dick Elliott, have spent more than 35 years amassing an eclectic collection of artwork from more than 40 Northwest artists in their home and yard at First Avenue and Pearl Street. Nearly every post and fence is covered with highway reflectors, 10,000 bottle caps, colored glass bottles and bicycle wheels. The pieces in the yard are ever changing — as old pieces decay, new ones are added. Parking is available in a public lot on the north side of the home. www.reflectorart.com First Avenue and Pearl Street Ellensburg

The Teanaway

The Teanaway has been getting more attention these days for its aweinspiring beauty and recreational opportunities. Spring, summer and fall are good times to enjoy Cascade trails like Stafford Creek (good for wildflowers) or Miller Peak and camping at the Beverly campground. The area is popular with horseback riders, and ridge-top trails offer breathtaking views of the Stuart and Enchantment mountain ranges. In the wintertime, the Teanaway lures snowmobilers, snowshoers and backcountry skiers.

The resort is home to three golf courses — Rope Rider, Prospector and the private Tumble Creek. Suncadia and Swiftwater Cellars both host concert series during the summer. The Gingko Petrified Forest and Wanapum Recreational Area along the Columbia River near Vantage offers camping, boating, a small interpretive center and day use/picnic area. Scenic Drives

7Drives Scenic

1

Taking a drive anywhere in Kittitas County is sure to live up to expectations. Enjoy the leaves changing colors in the fall and the livestock grazing in the spring. In the summer, roll down that window and let the fresh rural air cool you off. Scenery can be spectacular in the winter too with the surrounding hills covered in snow.

Yakima River Canyon Drive the 22-mile Yakima River Canyon Highway (state Route 821) southeast of Ellensburg to Selah, and you might catch a glimpse of big horn sheep, deer or bald eagles. Any time of year, you’ll view stunning scenery and interesting geology. Turn around at Selah and come back through again and you’ll see things differently the other direction. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management offers recreation areas, restrooms, hiking trails and campsites along the highway. The river offers world-class fly fishing and is popular with floaters during the summer.

2

Barn quilt trail

Starting in 2012, a group of local volunteers made it their mission to set up a self-guided route of folk-art murals on barns around Kittitas County. They quickly succeed — by the end of 2014, there were more than 100 murals on area barns. Organizer Jacky Fausset said the county’s barn-quilt trail is the only such trail in the state of Washington. Each painted quilt block has its own story. Visitors will be able to spot some of the quilt squares at the Kittitas County fairgrounds and in downtown Ellensburg, but there also are several scenic routes you can take to find the quilt squares. The county’s arid climate has preserved old barns, and many are still in use today for hay and livestock.

Roslyn to Salmon la Sac

3

Drive along state Route 903 north of Roslyn for tremendous views of jagged Cascade peaks, the Cle Elum River and quiet mountain lakes. The paved route ends at Salmon la Sac, which has 67 camp sites and a free day-use picnic area nestled between the Cle Elum and Cooper rivers. The area is popular for camping, hiking, boating, cross-country skiing, berry picking, kayaking, picnicking and more. The Gallagher trailhead near the Salmon la Sac area provides a popular motorized off-road vehicle area. Horses can be lodged in the corrals at the Forest Service’s Cayuse Horse Camp, near the Salmon la Sac guard station. The road is plowed all the way to Salmon la Sac in the winter.

Vantage Highway

5

The old Vantage Highway from Ellensburg to Vantage travels through rolling farmland to a dramatic shrub steppe landscape. It travels past the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, which is open to the public, and ends near Ginkgo Petrified Forest Park at the Columbia River.

Teanaway Road

State Route 10

If you are looking for a scenic alternative to the traffic on Interstate 90, try state Route 10, which runs from Ellensburg to Cle Elum. The route follows the Yakima River. You’ll see picturesque farmland, wind turbines and people fishing and floating. It’s particularly scenic drive in September and October when the leaves begin to change color.

6

The Teanaway Road offers dazzling views of the Teanaway River and valley. While the paved portion of the Teanaway Road is in good condition, high-clearance vehicles are advised for the unpaved portion of the road about 15 miles into the valley.

7

Lions Rock

This scenic drive goes 23 miles from the Kittitas Valley floor up steep slopes north of Ellensburg to an elevation of 6,300 feet. Head north on Reecer Creek Road, and go past its end on gravel to Forest Service Road 35.

Farm Fun

Farming is a way of life in Kittitas County. While the area is known for Timothy Hay and cattle, it also has a thriving 4-H program, two popular farmers markets and a number of sustainable organic farms. Here are some ideas for farm and field adventures:

Fresh for the picking

2

1

The Kittitas Valley offers some U-pick produce on a seasonal basis. Canyon River Berries has blueberries in the Yakima River Canyon in midsummer, and several farms offer u-pick pumpkins in the fall. Visitors also can arrange farm tours at Windy N ranch.

Visitors can wander through the award-winning Frontier Village, sample a tasty treats, and view handmade quilts, pies and canned goods.

Farm stands

The Kittitas County Farmers Market in Ellensburg runs from May through October. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays on Fourth Avenue between Pearl and Ruby streets downtown. Market-goers often are treated to live musical performances and once a year, in the fall, the market is invaded by street performers for Buskers in the Burg. In the Upper County, the Roslyn Farmers Market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays from mid-June through midSeptember. It features an array of fruit, vegetables, flowers, baked goods and crafts, and often includes live music.

Manastash Ridge If you are up for a strenuous hike, the view from the top of Manastash Ridge is unparalleled. The trail system’s main route, the Westberg Trail, starts to rise immediately after hikers leave the parking lot. Over about two miles from the parking lot to the summit, the trail rises 1,740 feet in elevation. Visitors at the summit are greeted with panoramic views of the Yakima and Kittitas valleys and Cascade peaks including Mount Stuart and, at times, Mount Rainier. There’s a parking lot for the trailhead at the end of Cove Road, accessed via Manastash Road.

The oasis mural was featured in the opening credits of the 1990s television show “Northern Exposure.” It’s not the only iconic mural in the town, though. Communities Ellensburg

Ellensburg

Something for everyone Ellensburg is a rodeo city and a college town. It’s an art and music destination with easy access to the outdoors. And it’s a renewable energy leader with an agricultural foundation. On the north side of town is Central Washington University, which first opened its doors as the Washington State Normal School in 1891, two years after Washington became a state. The normal school became Central Washington College of Education in 1937, Central Washington State College in 1961, and Central Washington University in 1977. About 9,000 students attend CWU’s Ellensburg campus. Its nearly year-round offerings of events and activities bring vibrancy to the town. Ellensburg boasts a successful lineup of festivals and community events year round that bring in tourists, entertain the locals and celebrate the town’s history, including Spirit of the West, Dachshunds on Parade, Jazz in the Valley and Buskers in the Burg. The city also is a leader in renewable energy. Wind farms are scattered throughout the valley, and a community solar electric project gives Ellensburg residents an opportunity to invest in locally produced energy and receive a credit on their electric bill in return. Ellensburg’s historic downtown is a destination that offers small-town charm, a vibrant history and a diverse collection of shops, restaurants and galleries. Much of downtown was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1889 and the community quickly rebuilt. As a reminder, a mural on the side of the Davidson building on Pearl Street depicts a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Recreational mecca

The city of Cle Elum, nestled amongst the eastern Cascades’ towering evergreens and located within sight of jagged peaks, has evolved since its incorporation in 1902 from a mining and logging town into a hub for Upper Kittitas County’s burgeoning recreation scene. Cle Elum boasts a population of about 1,870. The name Cle Elum derives from the Kittitas Native American word for “swift water,” a reference to the currents of the Cle Elum river. In the winter, skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers still pass through town on their way to nearby Snoqualmie Pass or the backcountry of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. In the summertime, the town plays host to anglers, hikers, bikers and outdoor enthusiasts of nearly every variety. Within town, history and recreation often blend. Visitors can enjoy the Coal Mines Trail, a former railway bed that links the towns of Roslyn, Ronald and Cle Elum, as it meanders past the sites of several historical coal mines. Motorized vehicles are only permitted on the trail during winter months, when it opens for snowmobile use. The historic Carpenter House offers visitors a glimpse at life in early 20th century Cle Elum. The Historical Society also operates Cle Elum’s telephone museum, which documents the switch from manual phone service to automatic dialing. Coffee houses, restaurants and shops are spread throughout the streets of downtown Cle Elum. Some of the most popular draws include Owens Meat, a 100plus year old meat market, Glondo’s Sausage Co., an old world-style Italian market, and the Cle Elum Bakery.

A diamond in the rough

Roslyn’s history has followed a series of booms and busts. Between the late 1800s and 1910, the population of Roslyn swelled from a few hundred to more than 3,000 - its all-time high. The last coal mines shut down in 1963, and today the population is just under 1,000. Roslyn boomed again when the award-winning television show “Northern Exposure” came to town in 1990. The film crews and actors left when the show ended in 1995, but “Northern Exposure” gifts are still for sale at Cicely’s Gift Shop. Dedicated fans travel from all over the country for Moosefest, a “Northern Exposure” fan festival, and tourists take photos in front of the Roslyn Cafe mural everyday in the summer. Today, 25 cemeteries highlight the city’s diversity and heritage, as do the Croatian Picnic, heritage dinners, Coal Miners Days and other yearly festivals. The town is bordered by a 300-acre, city-owned forest. Miles of nonmotorized trails wind through the mixed forest of pines and firs and connect with the nearby Coal Mines Trail, a five-mile railroad easement between Cle Elum and Ronald. The tall trees in the forest hide slag heaps and remnants of mining infrastructure. Summer is busy with parades, picnics and parties. The Roslyn Farmers Market runs June to September on Sundays. Other destinations near Roslyn include the Alpine Lakes Wilderness north of town and the Brick Saloon, which is the oldest continuously operating bar in the state.

Lower Kittitas County Kittitas Kittitas was founded as part of the westward expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroads. The community was established in 1889 and was incorporated as a city within the state of Washington in 1931. Today, many see Kittitas as a friendly, hometown community where housing is affordable, Interstate 90 is close and the schools are good. MAKE A STOP: Visit Olmstead Place State Park, a working pioneer farm at 925 Ferguson Road. There’s an old log cabin, farmhouse, tools, farm implements and machinery.

vantage Thorp

The community of Vantage sits on a scenic bluff overlooking the Columbia River about 28 miles east of Ellensburg off Interstate 90. Vantage may have only 100 or so full-time residents, but it welcomes many more guests throughout the year. Through the summer, Vantage swells with people traveling to and from concerts at the Gorge Amphitheater near George, Wash., across the Columbia River in Grant County.

Although the rural community of Thorp northwest of Ellensburg is easily accessed from Interstate 90, most of it is far enough away from the freeway and deep into the rural area of the Kittitas Valley to provide a unique mix of farm and ranch lands, quiet country homes with accompanying acreage, and small niche agricultural operations including organic farms.

MAKE A STOP: The Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Center features displays on the geological history of the area and Native American culture. The center includes Wanapum tribe petrogylphs. The Wanapum tribe lived along the Columbia River. Petrified wood was discovered in the region in the early 1930s, leading to the creation of the state park.

upper Kittitas County South Cle Elum grew up around the Milwaukee Rail Depot, while its counterpart to the north developed along the Great Northern Railroad. The process formed two distinct towns separated by a river. The railroad dominated life in early South Cle Elum, and long-time residents recall the town’s train depot as a lively place, filled with railroad workers on layovers and people constantly coming and going. Today, about 500 people live in South Cle Elum.

MAKE A STOP: At the vintage train depot. The Iron Horse State Park trail runs past it, and there interpretive signs about railroad history.

There are still gold-mining claims in the area that are worked off-and-on by locals and out-of-towners. Visitors can pan for gold, but must be careful not to trespass on private property or a claim. The fire hall has an exhibit of historic photos of life in Liberty and information about local hard-rock mining.

Ronald is as a jumping off point for outdoor enthusiasts venturing into the Lake Cle Elum area, Salmon la Sac or other parts of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and Alpine Lakes Wilderness where campgrounds and snowmobile and hiking trails abound. The tiny community has historical ties to the coal mining and logging industries, and Hawthorne Hall is often used for ethnic heritage celebrations.

The town was officially recognized as a historic district in 1974 and is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service lands that are known for great camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and four-wheel-drive trips in approved areas.

MAKE A STOP: Salmon la Sac has been a favorite recreation area for locals and visitors alike for generations. In the summer, there’s hiking, picnicking, kayaking, berry picking and camping. In the winter, there’s cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

History

Discover The

History

Kittitas County residents maintain a strong connection to their past, and a variety of museums and historic attractions celebrate the area’s history. As early as the 1700s, the Psch-wan-wappams, forerunners of the contemporary Yakama Nation, lived along the Yakima River and Kittitas Valley. The tribes who inhabited the valley were known as the Kittitas or Upper Yakima Indians. During the spring, the Kittitas Valley was one of only a handful of valleys in the state where tribes could dig for roots such as camas (also known as kamas or quamash) and kouse, both of which were staples in the Indian diet. As a result, the Kittitas Valley was a traditional gathering place for tribes east of the Cascades. By the 1860s, the first white settlers began to arrive, and several cattle ranchers established land claims. The first wheat crop was planted in 1868. William Bud Wilson built the first log cabin in 1868 where Ellensburg now stands, and AJ Splawn and Ben Burch moved a log house to a spot nearby so they could open a store in 1870. In 1872, John A. Shoudy bought the store, called Robbers Roost, and 160 acres of land. Ellensburg was named after his wife, Mary Ellen in 1875.

A phoenix painted on the side of the Davidson building in downtown Ellensburg symbolizes the community’s rise from the ashes after a fire destroyed most of downtown in 1889. At the time, Ellensburg was in the running to be the state capital, a title which went to Olympia instead. Meanwhile, the discovery of coal in Roslyn sparked a migration of immigrants from 46

Road riding Kittitas County features several popular road biking loops of various distances. The Cle Elum Loop goes from Ellensburg to Cle Elum and back along Highways 10 and 940 with some scenic views and climbs over 61 miles of road. The Double Loop Cemetery Road Ride is about half as long, but takes a figure-8 route from West Ellensburg Park to and through Thorp past the High Valley cemetery. For great views of countryside with some elevation change, try the Badger Pocket Loop, a 42-mile ride that takes riders into Ellensburg and Kittitas farmland. A similar route, the Look Loop, goes east from Ellensburg, north of Kittitas, and back.

The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which follows the old roadbed of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railroads, is another popular mountain biking spot. It stretches 300 miles from the western slopes of the Cascades to the Idaho border, and the 100-mile portion that extends from Cedar Falls to the Columbia River is known as Iron Horse State Park. It has several access points in Kittitas County, including Hyak, Easton, Cle Elum, Thorp, Kittitas and Ellensburg. Included in the western portion of Iron Horse is a

Adventure

No matter the season, adventure lovers will find plenty of ways to explore the outdoors in Kittitas County. From water sports to fishing to snowmobiling, there’s no excuse to stay inside.

On the water fishing Kittitas County caters to every fishing enthusiast in the family — from the kid with his first rod and reel to the adult with the latest state-of-the-art fly fishing gear. The Yakima River is a year-round flyfishing destination. It is a catch-andrelease river for wild trout. There are multiple fly fishing gear and guide services in the county, including Red’s Flyshop, Troutwater, The Evening Hatch and Worley-Bugger Fly Co. The Columbia River on the eastern edge of the county is also a prime spot for sturgeon, walleye, salmon and steelhead.

For those looking for fishing off the beaten track there are a multitude of lakes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.

floating

Floating the Yakima through the Yakima River Canyon is an aweinspiring adventure. The canyon features massive and weathered basalt cliffs, rising above the river, and rolling, high shrub-steppe hills. The stretch of river southeast of Ellensburg from Ringer Loop

In addition to the rivers and streams, the county is dotted with lakes. Lake fishing opportunities begin at Snoqualmie Pass with Keechelus and Kachess and continue through the lower valley. In the lower county, Mattoon Lake and Fiorito Lake are popular destinations, particularly for families with children. Many of the ponds are stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife and there are derbies and events at the lakes in the spring and summer. 52

Adventure on the land Wildlife viewing For those who are patient, viewing wildlife in Kittitas County is possible just about any time of the year.

From late December through as late as early April, state Fish and Wildlife Department personnel daily provide hay to a herd of elk at the end of Watt Canyon Road, 15 miles northwest of Ellensburg. Feeding begins at 8 a.m. and visitors can watch from behind a wildlife fence and parking area. The Yakima Canyon southeast of Ellensburg, in different seasons, can provide dramatic views of eagles, hawks and other raptors, a variety of birds nesting in the canyon walls, big horn sheep, deer, elk, coyotes and smaller mammals. Wildlife viewing also is possible on designated state-owned wildlife areas in Kittitas County — the Colockum, L.T. Murray, Quilomene, Whisky Dick and Wenas areas.

Birding Late winter is prime time for viewing bald eagles in Kittitas County. The best place to view bald eagles is northeast of Ellensburg in the Fairview and Naneum areas during calving season from February through late April. In addition to the late winter/spring visits, bald eagles also can be found here in the fall feeding on salmon. The Umtanum Creek Trail in the Yakima River Canyon is a good location to find golden eagles and other birds.
