Greetings

from the ERHOF President Dear Ellensburg Rodeo Fans, The Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association’s annual induction banquet and museum fundraiser art auction are fast approaching. We are following our successful “Boots,” “Hats,” “Steers,” “Drums,” and “Guitars” fundraisers with this year’s “Hides of Fame.” We are excited to have so many people involved in these campaigns aimed at establishing a permanent Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame museum to house the hundreds of artifacts donated to us. We especially thank our generous sponsors and the local art community for their participation. Since the 1997 formation of the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association, our goal has been to preserve the traditions of the rodeo which has played such a big part in the life and history of our community. With the hard work of our board of directors, allied organizations, ERHOF members, and the community, we are getting closer to our goal of creating an Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. The John Clymer Museum and Gallery, 416 N. Pearl, in downtown Ellensburg, now houses the valuable ERHOF archive and features recurrent displays, including our new show “That’s Entertainment!” in the Clymer’s McGiffin Room. As we near the 100th anniversary of the Ellensburg Rodeo, ERHOF will continue to work with the Clymer Museum, Ellensburg Rodeo Board, and other community groups to preserve the history and traditions of the Ellensburg Rodeo. For more information, please write care of ERHOF, 110 W.6th, PMB 374, Ellensburg, WA, 98926 or log onto www.ellensburgrodeohalloffame.com Sincerely yours,

Joel Smith, President // Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association

ERHOF Auction Art Through the Years 2017 Hides of Fame Becky Hollenbeck The Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association (ERHOF) was founded in 1997 to preserve and celebrate the history and traditions of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Inductees are chosen only after careful research and consultation with local rodeo experts. ERHOF collects, preserves, stores, and displays hundreds of priceless Ellensburg Rodeo artifacts. ERHOF presently houses its 350-cubic feet collection at the Clymer Museum and Gallery in downtown Ellensburg. The Clymer hosts recurrent ERHOF exhibits in its McGiffin Room and a wall and window display. Hall of Fame artifacts are also on display at the Ellensburg Rodeo Board Headquarters in the Driver House on North Main Street and each rodeo weekend in the Ellensburg Rodeo’s Western Village. ERHOF helped create the Kittitas County Fairgrounds’ Heritage Center wall display. As the 100th anniversary of the Ellensburg Rodeo approaches, our goal is to create a year-round rodeo history museum in Ellensburg for all to enjoy. We are committed to the fundraising this will require. ERHOF will continue to work with the Clymer Museum, Ellensburg Rodeo Board, and allied community groups to preserve the history and traditions of the Ellensburg Rodeo.

preserving rodeo history The Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association (ERHOF) Board is working with our members, allied organizations, and the community to found a permanent Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame museum of rodeo history, open to community members on a year-round basis. Towards this end, ERHOF has collected hundreds of photographs, posters, jewelry, prize buckles, programs, costumes, saddles, films, programs and many other historical artifacts from the Ellensburg Rodeo donated by local and national competitors, participants, volunteers, and their families. The John Clymer Museum and Gallery, 416 N. Pearl, in downtown Ellensburg, is the site of many ERHOF activities. In December, ERHOF Board members moved our valuable 350-cubic foot collection of historic rodeo records, publications, artifacts from the Bledsoe-Washington Regional Archive (CWU) into a new archive in the Clymer

Museum’s upstairs. On July 7, ERHOF launched a three-month show in the Clymer’s McGiffin Room. “That’s Entertainment! Ellensburg Rodeo Specialty Acts” features rodeo trick riders and ropers, specialty acts, announcers, musicians, and clowns. Nip Tucker, ERHOF museum committee chair, states “Our supporters want us to display our wonderful collection, and we plan to mount regular shows at the Clymer.” In addition to the McGiffin Room, ERHOF has displays in the Clymer’s north window, and there is a large wall display and cabinet section featuring rotating exhibits and John and Doris Clymer’s ranch and rodeo connections. The Ellensburg Hall of Fame also displays artifacts at the Ellensburg Rodeo Board Headquarters in the Driver House on North Main Street and the Ellensburg Rodeo’s Western Village rodeo weekend headquarters. ERHOF helped mount the Kittitas County Fair’s Heritage Center wall display and plans are in the works for a wall display at the Fa ir g r ound s’ restored armory building.

John Payne, the “One Arm Bandit” For the last thirty years, Oklahoman John Payne has performed one of the most entertaining and sought-after acts in pro rodeo. An accomplished rider and animal trainer, Payne has been chosen as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s “Specialty Act of the Year” twelve times. He is billed as the “One Arm Bandit” because he lost his right arm while working at a

construction site when 7200 volts of electricity went through his body for ten seconds; he was medically dead for five minutes. Payne’s riding and animal act has evolved over the years. It now consists of him riding a mule named Moe while herding buffalo or Watusi long-horned cattle around the arena and up onto the top of his stock trailer while

he cracks a bullwhip with his left arm. Payne has called buffalo “the meanest critter in North America” and said that the “buffalo tried to kill me almost every day for two years, and they’ve hooked me off the top of the trailer, twice, horse and all.” The “One Arm Bandit” brings to the rodeo and Ellensburg a touch of the Wild West Shows that characterized our earliest rodeos. His act requires extraordinary training, horsemanship, and courage.

The Smith Family The Smith family has served the Ellensburg Rodeo for nearly 100 years in a remarkable number of roles. Throughout the 1920s and ‘30s rodeos, Laurel Burchard Smith Sr. served as an usher and ticket taker, beginning a volunteer tradition carried on by his son James Robert “Jimmie” Smith. Jimmie, whose wife Jean Johnson Smith was descended from nineteenth century Kittitas Valley ranchers, directed the popular Ellensburg Rodeo “Cowboy Band” from 1934-43 and led them in the parade and at each rodeo performance. Jimmie also served as an official event timer, Ellensburg Rodeo Board member, and grounds volunteer from the late 1940s through the 60s.

Jimmie and Jean’s son Joel and his wife Marie continued the Smith family’s involvement in the rodeo; so too did Jimmie & Jean’s daughter Laurel Jean (Laurie). Joel served on the Rodeo Board from 1981-2007, coordinating grounds maintenance, the parade, and sound systems; he introduced and produced the rodeo country music concert series and Saturday night bull-riding events. In 2007, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association honored Joel with their most prestigious award for local volunteers, naming him “Justin Committeeman of the Year.” One of the founders of the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Association, Joel now

Page 13

serves as ERHOF President. Marie Smith spearheads ERHOF’s art auction fundraiser efforts and for nearly four decades has been an instrumental partner in Joel’s many rodeo duties, including the country music concert series. Laurie and husband Andy Erickson are longtime Gold Buckle Club members, and Laurie has served the Ellensburg Rodeo’s “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” campaign to highlight awareness of and support for cancer research. Betty has contributed her artwork to several ERHOF fundraisers. She calls this year’s work “Hell-Bent for Leather,” and notes, “A dark horse going hellbent for leather. Carved in a vegetable tanned cow hide with dimensional affects. Colorized with watercolor paints and finished with a leather antique finish. The plastic backing behind the image is used to keep the fillers for the 3D affect in place. The hide was not trimmed or framed to allow the owner options for their personal creative vision for use. KAREN JOHNSON Sponsor: Joe & Roylene Crawford Karen was a college professor for 25 years, teaching English, literature, and creative writing, and all the while the joy of art was a refreshing escape for her soul. Where she could, Karen pulled in music and art to feed her passions. She paints because of the wonder of it, developing skills to try and capture the beauty in everyday life. After making her way to see the Ellensburg Rodeo for over 20 years and experience its spirit and the cowboy way of life, she has moved to the Kittitas Valley and devotes her energy to the world of art she has always loved.

JOHN SCHMIDT Sponsor: Brady & Leah Erickson John is now 14 years-old and has volunteered as an ERHOF artist for 3 years. He has always had a keen interest in nature and been an avid investigator of outdoor environment. John took on the challenge of a new medium with oil paints and eagerly engaged in painting this hide for 2 sixhour sessions. As he finished and was leaving for summer salmon fishing in Sitka, Alaska, he said “that was the most exciting work yet and I love oils and the painting process.” His art teacher Carolyn Johnson has been a wonderful supporter as young John has contributed to his community while advancing his special talent. 2017 “Hides of Fame” Program

JEANNIE JOHNSON Sponsor: Ken MacRae Jeannie is primarily self-taught, but has taken many classes over the years. Since 1983, her passion for oils has developed into teaching others, including weeklong camps for kids. She paints each week with ColorWorks, a group of fellow artists, and is developing a series called “The Heavens Declare based on Psalm 19 and Hubble Station photos. Her work has been shown and sold in galleries across the US. Her art was chosen for the Kittitas County Fair posters in 2011, 2012, and 2016, and most of her original paintings are available as reproductions and cards. PENNIE HAMMER Sponsor: Ellensburg Rodeo This is Pennie’s 5th year of producing beautiful works of art for the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. She has won many awards, including the “Top Drum” in 2015 for her depiction of an Indian encampment in the Kittitas Valley. Pennie says, “No one should be denied the joy of art. I love to teach and share the talents God gave me.” Her hide painting comes from an original photograph of the first rodeo grounds in Ellensburg and is enhanced with her depiction of significant people and events that took place to form the deeply rooted traditions we have today. Pennie is a blessing to all who learn from her giving nature, as she continues to do all she can for the betterment of our community.

DIANE HUCKABAY Sponsor: CWU Foundation Diane Huckabay has been a participating artist in the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame fundraising auctions for six years. Each time, she has consulted with her community of experts for help in addressing the challenges in accomplishing the end result we find on the stage at the annual banquet. The surface of the hide this year was very responsive to every change contemplated, planned or attempted – and was especially reactive to those actions executed. The piece is designed as a wall hanging, essentially retaining the shape of the object presented to the artists. Her goal to construct a wearable vest with minimal alteration achieved the resulting image with the neckline becoming the collar. Thanks go to all. May its presence commemorate life and this significant event.

EDNA BJORGE Sponsor: Fitterer’s Furniture Edna has drawn all her life. At age 5, she drew her first mural on her parent’s bedroom wall using her father’s oil paints, tempting her from his tabouret. She did know enough not to paint on the portrait on the easel. Mom was horrified, but Dad went out and bought her art supplies. Focusing on calligraphy, pottery, and printmaking in art school, she continued to draw and paint. Moving into watercolors and oils, she discovered pastels; it was love at first sight. Finding pastels instrumental in portraying light, color, and atmosphere in nature, she freely expresses the intimacy and drama of the moment to record the actuality, essence, and spirit of a location. Through her paintings, she seeks to share the sense of wonder and mystery in the natural world.

PATTI ERIKSON Sponsor: Spirit Therapeutic Riding Bill & Teri Phillip Patti is a CWU graduate and horse trainer who has previously created art for ERHOF fundraisers. Patti’s Hall of Fame art this year is called “Rodeo Queens,” honoring the mares of the rodeo. Despite all the miles they must travel, all the new places, the stress, and competing to the best of their ability, these mares have the willingness to still give it their all. SAMANTHA JO ROBBINS Sponsor: Anderson Hay & Grain Photographer Samantha Jo Robbins started drawing at a very early age. Just like rodeo, art has always been a part of her life. Her love for the western lifestyle can be seen throughout many of her works. Samantha started rodeoing at the age of 3 in the great Ellensburg Rodeo arena. So, she jumped at the opportunity to help preserve the history of this fine rodeo. Samantha’s hide was created to look like an antique rodeo poster. The bronc rider is from an actual image of Harley May at the Ellensburg Rodeo in 1964. For more information about Samantha Robbins and her work visit www.samiejophoto.net.

CHERYL BROWN Sponsor: Don & Ann Bucklin This is Cheryl Brown’s 5th year creating a piece to be auctioned for ERHOF. Cheryl moved to Ellensburg from Ridgefield, WA in 2003 to study graphic design at CWU and compete on the college rodeo team. An avid rodeo fan and competitor since childhood, she is currently a member of the local roping and barrel racing clubs and has carried sponsor flags in the Ellensburg Rodeo many times. She won the 2010 Ellensburg Rodeo breakaway roping title and coaches queen candidates for the Royal Court. For her artwork, she enjoys working with multiple mediums including wood, canvas and bone. Cheryl won ERHOF awards for her 2013 Hat and 2014 Steer Head, and her 2016 painted guitar garnered $1950, helping the ERHOF move closer to its goal. Her 2017 hide entry honors the cowboy, the western way of life, and the Ellensburg Rodeo by combining multiple creative techniques that Cheryl loves to infuse in each of her art pieces.

BARBARA BAUMGARTNER Sponsor: Trish & Brad Buswell and Bill and Mary Seubert I am a self-taught artist and enjoy many forms of art,” writes Barbara Baumgartner. “While painting with oils is my true ambition, I love to experiment, and enjoy spending creative time in my small studio. This is my fourth year of creating a piece for the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. Each piece has been a challenge, but I enjoyed every minute I spent creating them. I hope that the Hall of Fame will soon reach the goal of a museum of Ellensburg rodeo history to display their beautiful and significant artifacts.

Holly has enthusiastically submitted wonderful art to the ERHOF fundraisers for 5 years and really loves using her techniques to honor the Ellensburg Rodeo. She also enjoys cooperating with other artists and meeting the community through this project and all the other shows she has done.

16

DEBBY DESOER Sponsor: Allen Faltus Debby thanks the Rodeo Hall of Fame organization for allowing her to be part of this fundraising project. This has been an opportunity to give back to her home town and, at the same time, the artwork has helped her grow as a craftsperson. She especially remembers ushering at the Ellensburg Rodeo in high school, a dollar a day, under the tutelage of Marsh Ericson. Debby’s background in leatherwork dates to the early 1970’s, making leather garments and footwear first at Captain America Leather in Ellensburg, and continuing through the early 90’s in Cle Elum and Colville. Her doll’s outfit was inspired by the Yakama Wing Dress design. The moccasins are miniature examples of Salish tribe footwear, and the beadwork follows Woodland Indian floral design traditions.

Originally from southern California, Clifton brought with him his love for fresh style and the progressive thinking of the graffiti street culture. He has been learning to blend aspects of contemporary street art and pop art into a fresh new form of fine art where classical meets post-modern. Jason’s work has been displayed in and around the Kittitas valley at Gallery One, the Loft Gallery, and the First Friday Art Walk; he has also displayed at the Larson Gallery in Yakima and Columbia City Seattle. His growing number of murals at local businesses includes Maximus Gym and Club 301.

RICHARD DALTON, III Sponsor: Claudia & Roger Weaver Richard Dalton, III was born in Seattle and raised in Hoonah, Alaska. He is of Tlingit and Navajo ancestry. Dalton attributes his growth as an artist from being raised in Hoonah where he learned the traditional ways, culture, heritage and art of his Tlingit ancestors. When immersing himself in creating native artwork, he emphasizes knowing one’s heritage, culture, and the significant meaning symbols bring to the artwork. When this knowledge is present, it brings honor and truth to the heritage and helps educate others about Tlingit art and culture. This design depicts a story when Raven brought the Sun, Moon and Stars to the Tlingit people. Raven, a known trickster, managed to trick a chief who had long-held the Sun, Moon & Stars captive in bentwood boxes. Dalton is honored to be a part of this year’s ERHOF fundraiser. He has lived in the Kittitas Valley for 10 years, is an active member of the Kittitas Valley Search & Rescue team, and enjoys the beauty and adventures the valley offers.
