Greetings, Since I arrived here in Ellensburg almost two years ago, I have been astonished with how much success one county can have when it comes to high school athletics. There are so many great teams, great players and great coaches that I knew I had to find a way to recognize their efforts on the field and in the community.
This year we recognized winners for male athlete, female athlete, coach and team at the end of each season. Fall and spring winners were recognized in separate publications earlier this school year. (Copies are available at the Daily Record office). This year we added team of the year, coach of the year, game of the year and most inspirational player because I wanted to share those memories with current and future generations. All the winners were recognized at an awards presentation earlier this month. Thank you for your readership and support,
My first spring here I was asked to pick one male and one female athlete of the year, but as a newspaper, we decided to do more to showcase the talent and drive of those associated with athletics in our area.

Ellensburg’s Xander Orejudos did it all on the baseball diamond this season. Not only was he the regular shortstop for half of the games, but he also led the pitching staff, giving him the title of CWAC co-MVP. He finished his final season pitching and hitting his way to his second state championship in baseball. Orejudos graduated Ellensburg last week and will play Pepsi Pak this summer. He will attend Columbia Basin College next fall to play baseball for the Hawks.

Tia Hill can call herself a state champion. Ellensburg High School’s junior finished the 300-meter hurdles in 44.64 seconds to win the event at the 2A state championships in Tacoma. Her head coach John Arlt said the time set a new school record and was second fastest in the Yakima Valley. Hill plans on returning run for the track team to compete in the 300-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and other relatys during her senior season and said her goal will be to finish the 300-meter hurdles under 44 seconds.

Cle E lum-Roslyn’s pitching staff was led by Ke’Mesha Howard who was selected to the AllSCAC first team as a freshman. Howard finished her first season with the Warriors compiling a 12-2 record, a 2.75 ERA and struck out a team high 90 batters. She also was a crucial
part of Cle Elum-Roslyn finishing the regular season 21-0 and winning the league and district championships. Head coach Cheryl Singer said of her pitcher, “She doesn’t play like a freshman at all. That is years of summer ball, and when you play at that higher level it definitely shows.”

Ellensburg High School baseball Ellensburg head baseball coach Todd Gibson simply described his team having heart. The Bulldogs marched their way to a state championship win after defeating the likes of rival Selah, Cheney, North Kitsap and WF West all in the span of a twoweek state tournament to claim in the crown. The team featured five seniors including Xander Orejudos, Blake Gibson, Major Moffat, Bryce Helgeson and TJ Schneider. The Bulldogs finished 23-3 and Todd Gibson said he is excited for next season as they return four all-CWAC players.

The 24-hour title game
Brian Myrick / Daily Record
Members of the Ellensburg Bulldog softball team gather together to wait for a decision on whether or not they will finish their game against Selah as darkness shrouds the field on May 11.
Darkness postpones CWAC championship game in crucial inning By RYAN KUHN sports editor SELAH — After nearly 16 innings of a doubleheader between the Ellensburg and Selah high school softball teams, neither team came away calling themselves league champions. The teams came into their final regu10

lar season series with one game separating them as No. 1 and No. 2 in the CWAC standings. The Bulldogs only needed one win on the afternoon to claim the title. Selah won the first contest 7-6 to force a decisive Game 2, but it ended up getting postponed in the middle of the ninth inning due to darkness.
Ellensburg held a 10-9 lead before the umpires called the game and according to the National Federation of State High School Associations rulebook there was much debate over whether the Bulldogs will still have their lead as play resumed. The NFHS softball manual states, “if a game ends because of weather conditions, or darkness interferes with play,
and the game has gone beyond five full innings, the score shall be the same as it was at the end of the last completed inning.” This rule did not specify what would happen during extra innings. Coaches said Ellensburg High School Athletic Director Cole Kanyer would let them know what the official decision was.
It turned out that the game would start back up in the bottom of the ninth with no outs. After the game was officially postponed, Ellensburg coaches expressed their frustration with the situation. “I just wished we could have finished the game,” said Ellensburg head coach Scott Gant. “Now we have to come back down here tomorrow for an inning or a half inning whatever it is.”
A slow start Ellensburg held a 6-3 lead in the first game, but it quickly disappeared in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Vikings scored four runs. Selah started the inning with back-to-back hits by Alyska Cousins and Maddy Zerr before Kaitlyn Noble sent a massive home run to center field that hit the
scoreboard. The Bulldogs attempted the comeback in the top of the seventh inning when they had runners on first and second, but Sierra Smith flied out to end the game.
Fighting until the end Ellensburg senior Nichole Giesy stepped into the circle for the second game of the doubleheader, but struggled to find her command. She gave up five runs in the first inning that included a 3-run home run by Zerr to center field. Zerr added another 2-run home run in the fifth inning and the Bulldogs stood in the face of a 7-2 deficit. “She is just a really good hitter,” Giesy said. “You have to hit your spots when you face her and if you make a mistake, that is what happens.” Selah looked like the league title
was within its grasp, until Ellensburg junior Hayley Cantu saved the game. Cantu stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Her team still trailed 9-6, but she sent a line drive triple to clear the bases into the left field corner. The triple was the her third hit of the game and undoubtedly the biggest of the evening. “I just went up thinking I didn’t want to be the third out,” Cantu said. “I had two strikes on me and I knew I had to come through for the team.” Ellensburg pushed ahead in the ninth inning when Morgan Olin doubled to left field. “I’m still excited,” Giesy said. “I know we can still do it.” Both teams ended up playing the bottom of the ninth inning where the Bulldogs sat down Selah in order to win the game, 10-9.

Bryce Helgeson has been a leader for all three major high school sports teams this season. He was asked to play quarterback for the first time since middle school and did exceptionally well, leading the Bulldogs to the state semifinals. On the basketball court, he was a scoring threat from his ability to get the hoop or knock down an outside shot. In the spring, he was the team’s leadoff hitter and starting third baseman as he helped Ellensburg win its second state title in four years. No matter the sport he was an all-league winner. This fall he plans to attend Arizona State’s flight school to become a pilot.
To all the teams and coaches that made this year great!

Eliminating Selah
Brian Myrick / Daily Record
Members of the Ellensburg Bulldogs baseball team rush to congratulate pitcher Xander Orejudos (3) after he throws the final strike of the game against Selah giving the Bulldogs a 6-4 win over the Vikings during WIAA 2A State Tournament baseball action in Ephrata on May 20.
Ellensburg baseball sends Selah home in regional round with 6-4 win By RYAN KUHN sports editor EPHRATA — Selah High School had been a thorn in the side of Ellensburg baseball. The Vikings had won 12 out of their last 15 meetings. But on May 20, the Bulldogs poked 16
2017 - Kittitas County Sports ALL STARS
back in a big way. Ellensburg players couldn’t stop smiling as they celebrated a 6-4 win over Selah at Johnson-O’Brien Stadium at Ephrata High School. The win not only ended Selah’s season, but allowed the Bulldogs to play for a spot in the regional championship against the winner of
Cheney and Olympic. “This was a long time coming,” said Ellensburg head coach Todd Gibson. “The reason I love baseball so much is there is failure in it and you have to fight through adversity. We overcame that on the biggest day.” Ellensburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior
catcher Major Moffat doubled to center and scored Gage Gibson. The Bulldogs added one more run in the third inning as Xander Orejudos drove in Bryce Helgeson on a sacrifice fly. “I think a couple of things might have caught (Selah off guard),” Todd Gibson said.
Sophomore left-hander Tyler Polcek was given the ball to start the game and lasted three innings, before his command started to slip as he loaded the bases. Despite giving up three earned runs on four hits, he walked off the mount confident. “In the future, I know he will be confident for me to start the big games,” Polacek said. Selah took advantage of the pitching change as Waylon Pettijohn took sophomore Brady Helgeson for a 2-run single to right field. One batter later, Carter Chapman gave his team the lead. The Bulldogs battled back to regain the lead in the fifth inning by scoring three runs that included a two-run double by Jadon Bugni. With their season and championship hopes on the line, Todd Gibson had no problem going to his bullpen
to find the right matchups. Ellensburg used four pitchers throughout the game, including three in the fifth inning. “If we didn’t win, we wouldn’t have played another game,” Todd Gibson said. “We had to shoot all of our bullets.” The Bulldogs finally went to their ace, Orejudos, but Selah was held to just one run in that fifth inning and stranded with the bases loaded. Orejudos has struggled in the past against the Vikings, but kept his determination as he refused to relinquish the lead. He finished the final 2.1 innings, and also got some run support with Moffat’s second RBI of the game. Selah sent the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Orejudos struck out senior Court Dietrich to win the game. “Bottom line is that I’m just proud of them,” Gibson said.
