Cwu overview By MATT CARSTENS staff writer

Central Washington University is kicking off another school year and ongoing changes to the campus are helping grow the institution. There was a 250 student enrollment increase in this year’s freshmen class, with the total enrollment approaching 12,000 students. “We’re going to be right where we want to be in terms of numbers,” CWU Vice President of Public Affairs Kremiere Jackson said. “Our students come from all over, mostly from King County.” More than 90 percent of CWU students are from Washington state. The bulk of students are from King, Pierce, Snohomish, Yakima and Kittitas counties. The afternoon sun lights up fall foliage around the Central Washington University campus. One of the big projects over the last spring and summer was named “Movezilla.” The opening of Science II allowed the university to shake up departments and buildings, with the puzzle helping to consolidate student services into Bouillon Hall. Now students looking for financial services, financial aid, registrar’s services, admissions, testing services and the connection card office can all be found in Bouillon. The process is still continuing, with about eight months left to go before it’s completely done, according to Jackson.

ConstruCtion The old Samuelson SUB building is well on its way to becoming the new STEM building, slated to open in 2018. The building had several additions and remodels over the last century, and will soon house the computer science department, mathematics and Information Technology and Administrative Management. “A lot of progress has been made,” Jackson said. “There’s going to be a large walkway and they’re getting ready to make some movement on that front. Students will be seeing a lot of change on the mall area, definitely opened up that whole section where the students spend a lot of their time in between classes.”

Diversity awarD CWU recently was honored with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, which is presented to 80 universities by Insight Into Diversity magazine. Central has won the award three out of the last four years. “It really speaks to and recognizes our institution’s focus and commitment to diversity and inclusion,” Jackson said. “I do think that this award really not only exemplifies our commitment from the president, but our commitment throughout the college.” Central was the only university in Washington to earn the award. Cwu reCreation More than meets the eye By NATALIE HYLAND For the Daily Record Central Washington University students taking six credits or more pay a fee to use the recreation center. For students taking fewer than six credits, a recreation center membership can be purchased for $102 per quarter. With that membership, students gain access to the four multiuse courts, group fitness studio, weight room, indoor 1/8 mile track, 50-foot climbing wall, aquatic center, challenge course, day-use lockers, locker rooms, showers and dry saunas. CWU also employs personal trainers and nutritionists to work with students for an additional fee. They can help you set and achieve goals.

Classes The recreation center also offers at least one class per quarter through the university that counts as a P.E. credit. In the past, classes have included yoga, cycling and pounding — a student favorite. There are also group fitness classes, including Zumba, yoga and other one-time activities, that don't count for class credit.

Single credit P.E. classes are also offered quarterly through the aquatic center for everyone from beginning to advanced swimmers as well as multiple open lap swims a week for an additional $3 fee. While students can boulder — or free-climb — the climbing wall up to 20 feet, the climbing wall staff also offers top rope certification clinics at $5 per person to learn how to properly climb and assist climbers in ascending the full 50-foot wall.

Club sports The recreation center is also in charge of registration and running club sports. Club sports complete against other universities and clubs around the region. The recreation center puts on its annual club sports fair every year for interested students to meet the current team members, talk about what it takes to join, and sign up. This year's clubs sports fair will take place on Sept. 19 in the SURC.

Some of the club sports include: men's and women's lacrosse, rodeo, water polo, wake sports, swimming, wrestling and more. (For the full list visit www.cwu.edu/sport-clubs/).

intramural sports Unlike club and varsity sports, intramurals are played only against other teams from the university. Registration for these quarterly teams is open on imleagues.com/

cwu during the add-drop registration period at the beginning of every quarter. The sports available to students are different each quarter. Fall 2017 sports include 7v7 flag football, 5v5 indoor soccer, 6v6 dodgeball, 4v4 volleyball and 3v3 basketball. Interested parties can sign up as individuals or with teams at imleagues.com/cwu. get out! By NATALIE HYLAND For the Daily Record Get outside and out of your comfor t zone w it h Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals. The center, located to the right of the SURC on campus, offers everything from equipment rentals to demonstrations to organized hikes. OPR's shop is filled with trail guides, informative books on just about any outdoor activity and employees who are more than happy to help. All current CWU students with a recreation center membership are able to rent equipment and attend events hosted by OPR. Students are able to rent just about anything they need for adventures on the water, camping, winter activities and climbing.

Kendra Turner, a junior at CWU, works for OPR as a shop attendant, trip leader and rafting guide. Turner said OPR's main goals are to give students a chance to experience the outdoors, get involved with the community around them and meet new people. One of the best ways OPR makes meeting new people possible is with their weekly Fireside chats every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. Following the closing of the shop for the night, OPR sets up chairs, s'more-making stations and of course a campfire in front of the shop. Students can meet new people, plan their next adventure and share stories about their favorite trips. Before students get on the river in kayaks, rafts, or on stand10 • 2017 CWU Welcome Guide

up paddle boards, they have an optional chance to test their abilities in bi-weekly kayak pool sessions every other Sunday at CWU Aquatic Center. OPR teaches participants how to maneuver, roll and safely enter and exit a kayak in a $5, two-hour class. Rafting guides like Turner also take students on guided tours on the Yakima River, and she says it is "a great place to start" rafting. She calls the Yakima non-aggressive and pointed out that it is relaxed enough to tube down if students prefer. OPR also offers a number of hikes each quarter. Sunset hikes happen every other Thursday at 4 p.m. On these hikes students are able to experience the trails surrounding CWU. Sunset hikes

Central Washington University athletics compete in Division II of the Greater Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) and face rivals like Alaska Anchorage, Seattle Pacific, and Western Washington University in sports like volleyball and basketball while facing Humboldt State and Azusa Pacific in football. Last year was a successful one for CWU many teams. Volleyball made its fifth consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament while the women’s basketball and softball teams made their conference tournaments.

Fall sports In fall sports, CWU football went 6-2 in conference action falling only to Azusa Pacific. Francois said he has high hopes for the Wildcats to avenge their losses and beat Azusa Pacific at home on Oct. 28. Volleyball featured many strong players and advanced all the way to NCAA Regional Championships for the fifth consecutive year under coach Mario Andaya. The team also took a trip aboard for the first time in program history and played against teams in Spain. This year, the team features senior Sabrina Wheelhouse who led the GNAC in blocks per set last year. Women's soccer also advanced to the NCA A Regional Championships where they fell to the eventual national champions, Western Washington. The team recorded the most season wins in 12 • 2017 CWU Welcome Guide

Former assistant coach Randy Richardson will assume the role of head coach this season. The athletics staff said they have high hopes for the team, which will feature six seniors.

Women's rugby, which plays in fall and spring, had a tremendous season last year, advancing all the way to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association championships where they fell to Division I Quinnipiac University, which would go on to be the national champions.

Men's rugby had a strong spring, finishing 11-5. Francois believes the team can do better still. Last season was the team's first under head coach Jason Thornley. Francois said the team is loaded with talent on the field, and with its the coaching staff. Wildcat baseball had another strong year, finishing second in the GNAC and posting an all around strong season. Coach Desi Storey balanced his roster with seven freshman to improve the team dynamics and will continue to balance them this year.

Track and field rounded out the year with two women earning their way to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including freshman Emily Bland. Many athletes also set new personal bests and continued to break school record after school record. Francois believes the team will continue to improve this year with the new talent they've recruited.

Cheering on the teams There are many ways for students to get involved with athletics. CWU Athletic Director Dennis Francois stresses the idea that it’s important to make games more than just games and instead make them into events for everyone to enjoy. Now in its third year, CWU students can download WAR points app which allows them to check in at sporting events and receive points they can use to redeem prizes throughout the year. Prizes include gift certificates to restaurants like Dominos Pizza and a round of at Sun Country Golf Course. CWU athletic events also in-game promotions like trivia, half-time games and of course plenty of food for everyone.

getting arounD town By NATALIE HYLAND For the Daily Record

While you can find just about everything you need on campus, sometimes getting off campus is a must. There are many options for students, whether they want to stay in town or take a bus to a whole new city.

bringing your own Car Many new students elect not to bring their own car, but for those who do, the parking lots surrounding campus range from free parking to paid-permit and even pay-by-day. Some students use their cars to get back and forth to home, but others use them to get to off-campus jobs. CWU parking permits can be purchased on a quarterly, yearly or academic year basis and range from $96-$204. Motorcycle parking permits also are available.
