WINTER ALL STAR COACH GAME OF THE WINTER WINTER ALL STAR TEAM

Greetings, Since I arrived here in Ellensburg almost two years ago, I have been astonished with how much success one county can have when it comes to high school athletics. There are so many great teams, great players and great coaches that I knew I had to find a way to recognize their efforts on the field and in the community. My first spring here I was asked to pick one male and one female athlete of the year, but as a newspaper, we decided to do more to showcase the talent and drive of those associated with athletics in our area.

Last year I added team of the year, coach of the year, game of the year and most inspirational moment because I wanted to share those memories with current and future generations. This year, we are taking it one step further. Each of the three sports seasons will have winners for male athlete, female athlete, coach and team, among others. At the end of the year, one winner from each category will be recognized at an awards presentation. Thank you for your readership and support, Ryan Kuhn

Ellensburg’s Avery Fisk (40) battles for a shot against East Valley during varsity girls basketball action in Ellensburg.

Junior forward Avery Fisk was the new face on the Ellensburg girls’ basketball team this season after transferring in from North Medford High School in Medford, Ore. Although the Bulldogs struggled, only compiling six wins all season, Fisk was a bright spot as she nearly averaged a double-double this season. Her coach, Kerri Fahey, said she loved having a true post player on the floor. “Avery brings that determination to be physical and score baskets,” Fahey said.

Kittitas basketball coach Tim Ravet urges on his team from the sidelines against Liberty during the WIAA State boys basketball championship game at the Spokane Arena, March 4.

EWAC Coach of the Year

Tim Ravet returned to coach at Kittitas and has turned a program around in a span of four years. Two seasons ago his team won three wins all year but the program started to turn around. Last year the Coyotes finished with 17 wins and a trip to the district tournament. This year they went undefeated. “He brings a positive energy and influence to the kids and he has put in so much sacrifice to get to a state tournament,” said longtime fan Tom Johnson. “Commitment takes that energy and that passion.”

State Champs

Brian Myrick / Daily Record

Members of the Kittitas High School boys basketball team hold the state championship trophy over their head after the Coyotes defeat Liberty to capture the WIAA State boys basketball championship in the Spokane Aren, March 4.

Kittitas boys basketball wins the 2017 2B State Championship and finishes 24-0 By RYAN KUHN sports editor SPOKANE – Kittitas boys basketball coach Tim Ravet exhaled as the final buzzer rang throughout the Spokane Veteran’s Memorial Arena. “It wasn’t pretty, but we did it,” he said right before he started to celebrate with 8

his team. The Coyotes just won their first basketball state title as they endured to defeat Liberty (Spangle) High School 72-69. But the reward came gift-wrapped with a tense ending that saw Kittitas’ 15-point lead with three minutes left dwindle down to one point in the final 20 seconds. Afterward, the nerves turned into

excitement, which in turn became an indescribable emotion. “This means everything,” said sophomore Brock Ravet, who was trying to catch his breath. “We have been dreaming about this since day one. ”

Brock’s big first half Brock Ravet said after the semifinal

game against Saint George’s his team needed to get off to a faster start. So he grabbed ahold of the wheel and made sure it happened. Brock Ravet scored 18 of his team’s 21 first quarter points and was nearly perfect from the field. After missing his first shot on the opening possession, he finished the quarter making his next seven shots,

including three pull up 3-pointers from the top of the key. “I don’t even know how to describe it,” said Brock Ravet, who finished with 46 points. “Everything was going just so good.” Brock Ravet continued his hot shooting into the second quarter as he scored all 11 second quarter points, but the Coyotes only held onto a 32-28 halftime lead.

Lancers keep fighting While Liberty watched as Brock Ravet fill up the stat sheet, the Lancers also were equipped with their own scoring machine in senior Chase Burnham. Burnham finished with a team-high 27 points as he led Liberty to within three points with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, but the Coyotes held their ground with back-to-back shots by sophomore Bailey Gibson. By the end of the third quarter, Kittitas held a 42-37 advantage.

The Coyotes ran with the momentum during the final quarter as eight points to go ahead 50-40 with six minutes left in the game. Kittitas led by as much as 63-48 after Burnham picked up his fifth foul, but the Lancers had one final push. Senior Tyler Haas and junior James Heir took the reins from Burnham as they scored the next 17 points. Brock Ravet could only sit and watch after he fouled out with 1:47 remaining in the game as Liberty came back to trail by just one point in the final minute. “I was a little mad that I didn’t have any timeouts in the last minute,” Ravet said. “I used my last one when Brock got blood on his shirt and you really need one at the end of a game like that.” After the Lancers had a chance to take the lead in the final 20 seconds, Haas turned the ball over and Gibson hit two big free throws to seal the game. “These were the biggest free throws

of my life,” Gibson said. “My dad told me a few months ago shots like this would come up and you have to be prepared. I definitely appreciate free throw drills.” Kittitas finished the season a perfect 24-0 and will only graduate seniors Drew Lamb and Bryan Arnold. “You think about this when you are a little kid and you look up to all the high schoolers,” Arnold said. “Knowing that I’m a senior with an undefeated record like this and a state championship is an unbelievable feeling.” For the other 10 teammates returning, they look forward to start it all over again this December. “We did what we set out to do,” Tim Ravet said. “It was our goal and we had to visualize it and conquer it. These kids put in the time, the work and the effort. Everybody was a huge part of that game and that’s the right way to finish.”
