FEETS

OF

IRISH PK DWYER COMEDY

Peter is known as the world’s best juggler… with his feet! In fact, Pete’s feet have won him 6 World Champion titles in Hacky Sack and an “Innovation in Juggling” award. Peter has spent nearly 20 years traveling the world to perform his unique brand of variety entertainment.

“I can hardly remember a time when I wasn’t playing music,” Dwyer said. PK’s mother had a love for music and taught him how to sing at a young age. Growing up, PK also found inspiration in artists like Elvis, Jimmy Reed, and Bob Dylan. He’s busked in Paris, Amsterdam, Venice Beach, and made a living busking in the subway tunnels around Central Park. Some buskers play covers of already famous songs but PK plays all original music.

Peter is not just the world’s best foot juggler, he can hold a flaming chair on his face, juggle flaming balls of fire, and balance on a board while spinning a hubcap in this mouth while simultaneously juggling knives! Combining these talents with crowd interaction and participation, crazy stunts and world champion level skill equals a fun and exciting comedy show for the whole family!

For the past 6 years, Buskers in the Burg has enjoyed hosting giant puppets as part of the Arts Parade. Brian Kooser, the man behind the puppets, began his career at Central Washington University where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in figurative sculpture and studied art, theatre, and design. Kooser developed his skills through a 12-year period working with Thistle Theater and 10 years with Monday Wrench Puppet Lab before beginning his own company in 2009. Kooser’s most well-known works include puppets that are used for the Fremont Arts Council’s yearly Solstice Parade, and Frankenocchio which premiered at Seattle’s Nippon Kan Theater to sold out performances for three weeks. Alongside Kooser is Karen Scott. Scott has been exposed to art since childhood. “My earliest memories of art exposure is being with my mother at a ceramics shop as well as an art supplies store when I was 5 years old,” Scott said. “My father made models of airplanes, covered wagons, ships, and cars. We painted and constructed Christmas ornaments each year.” Scott and Kooser met in 2012 at a giant puppet workshop that Kooser was hosting at Bluestone Academy. Scott came with a background in mask making and theatre costume creation and Kooser encouraged Scott to jumped right into processes. She began by making the costumes the puppets

PK enjoys Buskers in the Burg because it is well organized and the community shows genuine interest in the busking culture. Each year the festival brings in buskers to fill the streets with talent. Buskers in the Burg stays as true to authentic busker culture as possible by having a majority of its artists play acoustically.

“It’s really one of a kind,” Dwyer said. As for the future of busking, PK points to the shift into a cashless society. He often hears people applaud his talents but regretfully mention they no longer carry cash. Buskers are receiving their tips while they are performing, making it nearly impossible for them to use devices like a PayPal app or Square card readers.

“I may be one of the only buskers in the state, or perhaps the country, who makes a living playing his own material,” Dwyer said.

wore and after two years of assisting in the creation of the giant puppets, Kooser encouraged Scott to make one of her own. There was no idea too outrageous and no concept too difficult. In 2017, Scott was awarded a grant from the Ellensburg Arts Commission. Those who have seen and participated in the free Curbside Art Studio have been a part of achieving the goal of that grant: to bring people together with art. This spring many events, news stories, and community groups inspired Scott to further that goal. She wants to illustrate what unity in the community means to her, and that the Arts Parade has a way of drawing people together. The theme of this year’s Arts Parade is “Colors” and is meant to draw attention to how color can bring people together. Most of the performers wearing the puppets come from Ellensburg and CWU as well as Seattle. Kooser and Scott are always inspired to add another character to the parade. New this year are giant flowers, mushrooms, trees, and very vivid wildlife. Kooser has been very busy in his giant garden and as for Scott, some of her characters have taken up sports! It’s something you’ll have to see to believe.

“It does make me nervous because this is how I make a living. I’m sure someone will figure something out. I know busking will continue,” Dwyer said. To support PK Dwyer, you can visit his website, www. pkdwyer.com, where you will find news about his upcoming

appearances and downloadable music. PK also plays at Pike Place Market in Seattle 150 days out of the year and at 100 farmers markets

across the state, not to mention the various street fairs and festivals he attends. You can see PK Dwyer at the Busker Festival on September 30th from 11-1 pm in front of Ellensburg Floral on the corner of 4th and Pine.

Sam Malcolm has amazed audiences with his energetic juggling routines and hilarious comedy in shows around the world. His show is a seamless combination of the absurd, impossible, and daring, with in the moment wit and captivating original jokes. Sam goes above and beyond to entertain. Currently living in Denver, Colorado, he spends most of his time traveling near and far to bring laughter to audiences all across the planet. Sam is an accomplished juggler, winning several awards for his abilities at the International Juggler’s Association as well as many regional competitions. He was featured on CNN”s Great Big Story in the summer of 2016. Sam has an act that will wow the entire family and have you begging for more!

This all ages event will feature the top three buskers with the most votes from the day opening for The Latona Family Band! The 21+ crowd can purchase a signature tasting glass and 10 tokens (1 token per tasting or 6 tokens for a full pour) for $15. Additional tokens available for purchase throughout the evening. Pizza by Pizza Colin will also be available for purchase by the slice. The Latona Family Band (LFB) is a group of 3 musicians who love to play in the Americana style. Although the boys are not related by blood, their family bond was forged through shared houses, campfires, van tours, and fishing trips. Originally from Seattle, the LFB started out playing farmers markets in Ballard, Redmond, and Pike Place. Today you can find them playing in Kenmore breweries, Woodinville wineries, and events for organizations like 21 Acres. Their favorite gigs tend to be weddings, birthday parties, and festivals like Folklife or Buskers in the Burg! Two years ago the LFB concluded a troutfueled Vanagon based music tour of the western states with the unforgettable experience of sweeping the vote at Buskers in the Burg. They can’t wait to return to the ‘Burg and entertain festival goers with a mix of original music and classic Americana tunes from bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Mumford and Sons, The Devil Makes Three, and many more.
