Says Senators Adebayo, Misau mischief makers

Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Federal Government has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a suit filed by two former All Progressives Congress’ Senators, Rabiu Ibrahim Adebayo and Isa Hamma Misau, seeking to stop reconvening of the Senate without the notice of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki. Adebayo, who represents Kwara South, and Misau, representing Bauchi Central District in the Senate, were elected on the platform of APC before they defected to the opposition PDP. In a notice of preliminary objection to the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/843/18, the Federal Government through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, urged the court to dismiss the suit. The preliminary objection was dated August 27, and is challenging the suit of the senators for want of jurisdiction. The AGF, the 10th defendant among 12 defendants told the court that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to institute the action, adding that they have failed to show any wrongdoing of the defendants, if any. The AGF said, “My lord, I don’t think this court is so free to allow itself to be used by mischief makers like the plaintiffs in this matter. The present suit as constituted have not shown any wrong done to

the plaintiffs. “We submit that the directives or invitation of the Senate President to appear before the Inspector General of Police for further investiagation in line with paragraph 5(f) of the DPPF’s advice cannot create a cause of action in favour of either Saraki himself or the plaintiffs, the AGF said. “It is pertinent to my lord to state here that if there is a threat to powers of the Senate President as conferred on him by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Rules of the Senate, the first person to complain and not the plaintiffs also herein, the Senate President, did not raise any alarm that some people are trying to usurp his powers and illegally reconvene the Senate. “My Lord, in determining whether the plaintiffs have the necessary capacity to institute the action, the claim must be examined to see if there is any enforceable right in connection with with the plaintiffs. The AGF argued that there must be a nexus between the plaintiffs and the disclosed cause of action concerning their right or obligation which have been breached or threatened to be violated. The AGF contended that section 6(6)(b) of the 1999 Constitution is to the effect that for a person to be able to institute an action in court, he must be able to show that he has the right and obligation to do so and failure to do so would cause him/her injustice.

The FG therefore urged the court to decline jurisdictions and hold that the plaintiffs though members of the Senate, are total strangers to the circumstances that gave rise to the suit and hence lack the locus to institute the action. The AGF insisted that the duty of the plaintiffs is to attend Senate business of the 2nd defendant (senate president), through due process, summons the Senate to reconvene and carry out their duties as senators and not to invent facts and concort a suit and file same in a court of law. The AGF further argued that all through the facts in the plaintiffs’ affidavits, “there were nothing showing that the Senate President has complained to the plaintiffs that his powers are being usurped by some agents of the state. The AGF further submitted that since every declaration and order sought by the plaintiffs in the suit are directly for the benefit of the Senate President, the plaintiffs lacked locus standi to commence the suit and that the court lacks jurisdiction to hear and determine the plaintiffs’ suit. In addition, the AGF stated that the plaintiffs also had failed to establish any acceptable locus standi as required by law to institute the action, just as they have failed to show how the wrongfull act (If any) of the defendants in the suit affects them in person. The case has been adjourned till September 13.

APC, PDP differ over Buhari’s comment on illegal immigrants Tom Okpe and Tunde Opalana, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed divergent views over the comment of President Muhammadu Buhari on illegal migrants.

While the APC said that the President Buhari-led administration is committed to mitigating the migration crisis Nigerians are facing, particularly in Libya and in the Mediterranean Sea, the PDP insists that Buhari’s comment is insensitive. Reacting to the PDP’s comment on the issue, the

APC in a statement made available in Abuja on Sunday by its acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, condemned attempts by the opposition party to politicize Buhari’s statement on illegal migration and trafficking of Nigerians during the recent visit of the German Chancellor,

AfDB boss’ recipe against poverty: Africa needs disciplined investment not financial aids Mathew Dadiya, Abuja World Food Prize Laureate and President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has said that Africa does not need aids but disciplined investments, adding that the time has come to view investment and development opportunities in Africa through a totally different lens. Akinwumi said this on Sunday while addressing a standing room - only crowd of global agriculture experts at the Food and Agriculture Orgnaisation (FAO) headquarters in Rome, 2017. He said that with over 800 million people worldwide suffering from hunger and more than two billion affected by malnutrition, food insecurity remains a real threat to global development. Adesina, who is making a global pitch for renewed visionary leadership and strategic alliances, posited that “the future of food in the world will depend on what Africa does with Agriculture.” The AfDB, which he leads, envisions a food secure continent which uses advanced technologies, creatively adapts to climate change, and develops a whole new generation of what he describes as ‘agripreneurs’ – empowered youth and women who he expects to take agriculture to the

next level. By 2050, an additional 38 million Africans will be hungry. The paradox of lack in the midst of plenty, and Africa’s growing youth bulge are some of the reasons why Adesina’s sense of urgency is resonating with numerous government, private sector, and multilateral leaders during recent European and Asian trips. The banker and 2017 World Food Prize Laureate will be the first to admit that he considers himself the ‘evangelist-in-chief’ for a food secure Africa. Africa continues to import what it should be producing, spending $35 billion on food imports each year, a figure that is expected to rise to $110 billion in 2025 if present trends continue. Adesina has also joined Rockefeller Foundation President, Raj Shah, Unilever CEO, Paul Polman, and 2018 World Food Prize nominees - Lawrence Haddad and David Navarro, among other prominent global academic, development, and agriculture experts at Wageningen University and Research, in the Netherlands, to make the case for urgent collective action by State and non-State players to accelerate Africa’s agricultural growth and transformation. The AfDB boss noted that Africa receives only 2 percent of the $100 billion annual revenues from chocolates globally.

Adesina also told his audience that “adding value to what nations produce, is the secret to their wealth. Producing chocolate instead of simply exporting cocoa beans does not require rocket science.” To expand opportunities for youth, women, and private sector players, Adesina is on a global mission to promote and seek support for the bank’s Affirmative Finance for Women in Africa (AFAWA) programme which aims to mobilise $3 billion to support women entrepreneurs who historically lack access to finance, land, and land titles; a $300 million ENABLE Youth programme to develop the next generation of agribusiness and commercial farmers for Africa; and a new global investment marketplace, the African Investment Forum, which will be held in Johannesburg from November 7 to 9. In separate meetings with Sigrid A.M. Kaag, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, in the Hague; Peter van Mierlo, CEO of the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), key private sector players, and members of the Dutch Foreign Affairs Advisory Council, Adesina said Africa and its partners must seize unprecedented opportunities for innovative partnerships and increased development impact. Mierlo believes, “a huge benefit for Africa is that it can skip development cycles that often almost all developed

Angela Merkel to Nigeria. Nabena said , “The PDP in its typical insensitive and unguarded stance on matters affecting the country is exploiting an issue that borders on the lives of Nigerians, mostly youth. “It is a known fact that many Nigerian families have suffered grief as a result of deaths and other inhuman treatment that have befallen relatives attempting migration to Europe and other parts of the world. “Through support of international agreements and efforts towards curbing illegal migration, repatriation of stranded Nigerian migrants and addressing root causes encouraging illegal migration of Nigerians, the President Buhari administration has demonstrated the political will to check the scourge.” The APC spokesman stated that the pains and sufferings most Nigerians go through with the hope of reaching Europe had been well reported through relevant agencies. He recalled the presidential directive for Nigerians to be evacuated from Libya and other locations and be returned home safely, adding that the administration had already put in place several interventionist programmes to enable such persons start new and productive lives in the country. Nabena said that with unemployment and poverty identified as one of the root causes of illegal migration, the President Buhari administration was using initiatives to check the ugly trend. He listed the initiatives as N-Power, Bank of Industry Youth Entrepreneurship Support, Central

Bank of Nigeria support schemes, promoting agriculture, and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country. But, the PDP disagrees with the APC’s posture, describing as insensitive, President Buhari’s statement that Nigerians caught up in their attempt to illegally enter Europe, are on their own. Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP argued that the comment has further exposed the President as an insensitive leader, who cares less about the plights of his compatriots. Ologbondiyan said that “while the PDP does not in any way support illegal migrations, our party holds that such does not warrant incendiary statement against our citizens by no less a person than the President, who should be seeking for ways to solve the problem. “The PDP notes that such statements by our President against Nigerians fuels violent attacks and inhuman treatment being meted out against our citizens abroad, including those with legitimate documents and engaged in lawful activities”. The party added that President Buhari has shown that he is not bothered that no fewer than 10, 000 Nigerians died in the deserts between January to May 2017 alone, while trying to escape the economic hardship and escalated insecurity occasioned by his misrule. “Is it not disturbing to Mr. President that reports by Nigerian Immigration Services showed that many more Nigerians have been trapped in detention and slave camps in various

parts of the world? “Also, is it not an act of gross leadership failure that, in his outburst against Nigerians, President Buhari admitted that they left in search of greener pastures, yet he could not articulate any solution to mitigate the suffering his administration has unleashed on our nation in the last three years? “Mr. President knows he is the cause of the problem, yet he has no words of assurances for suffering Nigerians. Instead, he has continued to worsen the situation with unsavoury statements against our nation and her citizens whenever he is before an international audience. “If President Buhari is not condemning our youth as lazy and lovers of freebies, he is disparaging our women as inconsequential or demarketing our nation to investors as corrupt,” said the PDP. The party added that it is the duty of the President, as elected leader of government, to pursue the fundamental human rights of his citizens, as well as find solutions to the problems that is pushing Nigerians to adopt illegal migration, irrespective of the huge risks, as option for survival. The party argued that if the Buhari administration and the APC had not wrecked Nigeria’s once robust economy, Nigerians would not be seeking for greener pastures in other lands. It lamented that in another exhibition of incompetence, President Buhari could not articulate any strong response to the economic proposals brought by the German leader, thereby squandering our nation’s opportunity of benefiting from her visit.

Adesina countries had to go through, by deploying new technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics in agriculture”. In a continent where more than 640 million are without electricity, Adesina says the private sector is key to Africa’s development in Africa’s energy and agriculture sectors. “If Africa is going to turn the tide of irregular migration, this is critical. There are three ways in which we can collaborate: either through the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility, Africa 50 - a private equity institution which has raised more than US$ 850 million from 22 countries, and the new Africa Investment Forum.” Adesina recognises that the lack of electricity is Africa’s biggest development impediment. The Bank’s new and ambitious Desert-to-Power initiative which aims to generate 10,000MW of power across Africa’s Sahel region will be critical to reducing migration and climate change impacts. “We will do this through a blended finance mechanism with guarantees”, Adesina said while speaking to a Highlevel Roundtable of Dutch Business Leaders at the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), informed key private sector leaders that “governance structures and business regulatory environments are changing in Africa. “Indeed, several African countries have already made significant progress

in improving their general business and investment environments. Africa is doing better than some of the Asian countries,” he reminded his audience, adding that “In the energy sector, the African Development Bank is investing $12 billion over the next 5 years, with the goal of leveraging $40-50 billion; and an additional $US 24 billion, over ten years, in agriculture to implement its Feed Africa Strategy.” The strategy is already bearing fruit with the establishment of Staple Crop Processing Zones in several African countries, including Ethiopia, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mozambique, with a plan to reach 15 countries in a few years. Strategically located in and around rural farming communities, Adesina said “these agriculture zones will form the nucleus of a new wave of agro-industries and greenfield ventures, attracting agripreneurs, biotechnology firms, intellectual and capital investments. They will also ensure that foods are processed and packaged right where they are produced, rather than in urban centres far removed from centers of production.” Described as a visionary optimist by many colleagues, Adesina believes the bank’s policies and investments will help turn rural areas from zones of economic misery into zones of economic prosperity.

Fruits, vegetables, others can give longevity - Report Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts can give longer life to old people, Italian researchers said on Sunday. Italian researchers found that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans, fish and olive oil, but low in meat, dairy foods and alcohol, reduced the risk of an early death in people over 65 years by 25 per cent. Scientists at the Neuromed Institute analyzed the relations between the Mediterranean diet and mortality in a sample of more than 5, 000 people over 65 years-old who were followed for eight years. They also analyzed other studies in several countries, involving 12,000

people. The researchers said that the results “clearly indicate that the Mediterranean diet is an authentic life-saving shield able to significantly prolong the life of elderly people. “And the more strictly a pensioner follows the Mediterranean diet, which also includes a glass of wine with meals, the less likely they are to die prematurely”. Study author, Licia Iacoviello, from a hospital in Molise, Italy, added that “with the progressive ageing of the world’s population, we know that in a few years, people over 65 years-old will represent about a quarter of Europeans”.

Okowa, who prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed faithful and condoled with the family of the deceased and the entire Ugolo community in Okpe Kingdom over the unfortunate incidence, said that “this is indeed a very sad and unfortunate incident. “On behalf of the

It is our prayer that the soul of the deceased will rest in peace, and that the injured will experience quick recovery. “Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the people of Ugolo in Okpe Kingdom over this tragedy”. Meanwhile, the governor has said the state government will undertake the medical treatment of the injured victims and has directed that adequate medical attention be given to the survivors of the unfortunate building collapse. According to the preliminary report by the works commissioner, one person died from the incident, 11 were rushed to the hospital out of which seven have been treated and discharged while the remaining four were still undergoing treatment, and were in stable conditions. The commissioner in the report, declared that “the church is a 100 -years -old church building and in an attempt to rebuild and expand the church, the old church building collapsed as a result of the weight of worshippers who leaned against the walls while the

early morning mass was on”. Meanwhile, the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has commiserated with the Delta state government and the Catholic Church in Nigeria over the collapse of the church building. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that he would continue to monitor the situation and help ensure that all survivors receive necessary medical attention. Saraki said, “My prayers are with the worshipers, affected families, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the people of Delta state on this morning’s collapse of St. Paul Catholic Church in Okpe Local Government Area. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to see that survivors are rescued and treated. “Right now, we must all come together as Muslims, Christians, people of faith, and most importantly, Nigerians to provide all necessary relief for the affected families and community. This tragedy affects us all and we join the Catholic community to mourn the deceased, even as rescue efforts are still underway.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disowned the meeting held by some party members opposing the choice of using direct primaries to pick its candidates for all elective positions in the forthcoming 2019 general elections. According to our source, some party members believed to be sponsored by state governors who claim the direct primaries does not favour them had scheduled a meeting in Abuja, to forge a way forward against the stance of the party. The Daily Times recalls that the APC, rising from its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on August 30 had settled for the direct primary election to elect candidates to contest elective positions in the 2019 general elections. But in a statement signed by the acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena on Sunday, the APC stated that the meeting scheduled to hold at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja on Sunday by some organs of the party is illegal. The statement stated that “the attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to an illegal meeting scheduled to hold on Sunday at Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja, by some members of our party organs, with a view to fault the decisions made by the NWC followed by the National Executive Committee (NEC) as regards the mode of the party’s primary elections. “We want to state clearly that the meeting which has been fixed for 2.00 pm is illegal and an attempt to puncture the sincere efforts being made by the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC to reposition our party ahead of the 2019 general elections and to ensure unity, equity and justice in the party”. The party noted that the outcome of such a meeting

which is already known will be a nullity, admonishing members to disregard such meetings in the interest of the party. Nabena insisted that “it is illegal to call such meetings outside the purview of the constituted authority. “The identities of those plotting such meetings have been identified and unless they desist from such, they will be dealt with in line with the party’s constitution at the appropriate time. The NWC will resist any attempt to disrupt the current peace and harmony prevailing in our great party after the exit of some members”. The party urged members who are not satisfied with the decisions of the party to utilize channels provided by the party’s constitution to air their views, adding that “we remain focused in delivering good governance to Nigerians and above all ensuring the victory for our party come 2019 and we will not be intimidated by the antics of a few, in ensuring success for our party”. But our correspondent later gathered that 35 state chairmen of the party met behind closed doors in certain location in Abuja and allegedly reached a resolution dissociating the chapters of the party from the earlier decision of the APC to adopt direct primaries. The chairmen also reportedly considered passing a vote of no confidence on the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomohle over the direct primaries decision. According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the forum of APC state chairmen will do everything possible to resist the imposition of the direct primary option, including passing a vote of no confidence on the Oshiomohle-led NWC. The source further confirmed that all the state chairmen of the party and some APC national officers were in attendance at the meeting. The source said,

“Majority of the state chairmen are here and those that could not make it sent representatives. We are talking and our resolutions will be made known to public very soon. But, it won’t be today (Sunday) because we are still consulting and meeting.” The meeting, it was observed also had in attendance some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and some ex-officio members of the party. Earlier at a press conference at his Maitama residence, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Comrade Mustapha Salihu, accused some leaders of the party from the SouthWest of conspiring to foster regional imperialism on the party. Salihu believe that apart from the fact that the direct primaries system requires a lot of supervision, the electoral body was not prepared for the system. “Before now, I don’t have any feelings that there was the possibility of conspiracy, but when I see people planting stories, I now begin to suspect; if one region feels that was what is best for them, I think they can canvass that at the regional level and they now give us reasons why they need that. “I want to believe that in a democracy, the majority have their way and the minority have their say. So, they have the right to wish and if we decide to make it flexible, definitely, what they want will be given to them at their own various states. “But one thing I want to assure you is that we will not succumb to regional imperialism so long that we are acting within the constitution,” he added. When asked if the NWC is divided on the method to use for the primaries, Mustapha answered that “I cannot say we are divided because division is a big word for us to use in a family issue. Actually, there may be divergent views, and all these divergent views will be trashed out at the NEC”.

Institute director canvasses suitable Short News unrest: Stakeholders agric training for geo-political zones Plateau seek spiritual solution Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin National Executive Director, Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM) Ilorin, Dr Yomi Kasali has canvassed agricultural training along the peculiar needs of geo political zones of Nigeria towards greater outputs and improved Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the nation. Kasali, while addressing participants at the Training on N-Agripreneur in Milling and Threshing Enterprises at the NCAM, said agricultural needs of each of the existing six geo political belts of Nigeria should determine the agricultural machines to be made available in such areas. The event was bankrolled by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the NCAM. According to the NCAM boss, “it is high time we commence distribution of agricultural equipment especially tools

according to the needs of the people. For instance, what are we doing with tuber related equipments where only grains are planted? There should not be anything like equal distribution of tools but distribution according to the needs of the people. “At NCAM, one of our core values is designing and fabrication of agricultural equipment. As we carry out this function, we are cognizance of the multifarious agricultural belts in the country and so designed tools according to their needs and peculiarities. We expect equitable distribution as well. It is of no use if designed equipment is kept where they are not needed.” Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event that drew 95 participants from states such as Yobe, Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, Jigawa and Kebbi, the Executive Director of NCAM, Engr. Dr Kasali disclosed that the institute has highly trained personnel who could impart special skills in any area of agricultural mechanisation and marketing.

Kasali, who was represented by a senior director at the centre, Engr. Dr Yinka Ademiluyi urged the participants to return to their localities and disseminate the acquired skills to their people especially their peers. He added: “I am optimistic that if you all become trainers in your various communities as expected, the current challenges of wastages associated with food processing and storage will be greatly curbed.” Earlier, the representative of IFAD-CASP Mr Bello Achem, described the training given as ‘technically satisfactory’, urging the participants to promptly spread the knowledge gained before they would forget. Achem said the training was the second phase with the modules designed for specialisation in the chosen field just as the first dwelled more on general agricultural enterprises. Starter packs were later distributed to the participants to boost their morale on utilising the knowledge gained.

Omobude in a press statement in Benin City, Edo State, called on the Nigerian government to do all it takes to free the innocent Dapchi school girl. “The Federal government should act fast now; do the needful and spare no efforts in securing the release of the innocent Leah who had been held hostage for the past seven months. “The PFN is considerably worried why it’s taking the government such a long time to secure the release of Leah Sharibu from the Boko Haram enclave.

“The PFN therefore calls on the President Muhammadu-led Federal government to do the needful to reduce the tension her continuous detention against her will, is generating among the Christians in Nigeria and their wellwishers,” the PFN National President, added. Besides, Rev Dr. Omobude, urged all those, including the international community who cherish freedom and democratic process to join efforts to ensure that Leah is released from Boko Haram captivity without further delay. The PFN also called on all Christians and Nigerians of goodwill to continue to pray for Leah’s safe return and re-union with her family.

NYSC, national integration and diasporan unity (1)

Emmanuel Onwubiko

For two weeks in June 2018, yours faithfully sojourned in the United Kingdom on my annual vacation and an integral aspect of my vacation workload was to conduct empirical researches and a cocktail of interview sessions with some Nigerians. Those Nigerians were basically and randomly chosen to reflect the diverse ethno-religious affiliations that characterize Nigeria. The core question asked was to ascertain the contribution that their involvement as former participants in the National Youth Service Corp scheme has helped shaped the horizone of their world views (weltanschauung) of integrating fully and in real time with members of the different socio-cultural communities from Nigeria who reside legitimately and are engaged in legitimate tasks in the different cities of the United Kingdom and beyond. The inquiry was motivated by the generally agreed consensus that Nigeria now has a serious challenge of divisiveness which can be resolved if national integration is mainstreamed into our daily way of life as citizens of Nigeria in Nigeria and wherever we find ourselves around the global community of humanity. There is also the consensus that Nigeria over the past few decades have witnessed progressive brain drain of Nigerian graduates who had moved to overseas nations around the World, settled and are in most cases very successful in their professional careers. The study i did was primarily to ascertain the place of the NYSC’s experiences for these kinds of Nigerians based abroad with specific reference to how they relate with each other so as to provide possible guide to solving the ever expanding issues of divisiveness amongst Nigerians living in our homeland. In going about this task, yours faithfully took over one week to search for the resource persons willing to participate since it is more of a personal patriotic initiative to use an institutional

example to try to find panacea to our troubling times. Luckily, Emeka Nwaobasi Okonkwo, James Musa, Bankole Adebowale and Smart Odion were the persons that yours faithfully interviewed in the different areas around London, the internationally acclaimed tourism capital of Western Europe. Emeka who was the first of the four interviewed told this reporter that he took part in the NYSC scheme over two decades ago even as he narrated how his foray in search of higher post graduate qualifications took him to Manchester City in the United Kingdom over 17 years back. “A factor that shaped the fundamentals of my outlooks on life and social interactions amongst the diverse people of Nigeria remains the lessons of constructive and positive national integration I learnt whilst serving in the then capital of Borno State of Maiduguri.” “My one year stay in Maiduguri brought me face-to-face with virtually persons from approximately 45 percent of the ethnoreligious configurations that make up contemporary Nigeria. NYSC gave me the practical lesson on how to relate, interface and socialize with persons of diverse affiliations as people united under one nation by God. James Musa, unlike Emeka who hails from Imo state, comes from Gombe but met his wife whilst serving in Obolo Afor in Enugu state who has now given him three beautiful children. Mr. James who spoke with this writer over some Cups of Coffee in Oxford Street Central London, was full of praises in the area of national integration that we got about fifteen years back in NYSC.” He further narrated to me how he and his wife are top members of the diaporan community in the United Kingdom and how they have remained committed and profoundly faithful in their zeal to ensure

that the NYSC is not allowed to die. For the NYSC which he attributed to the quality interactions he now engage with many Nigerians from the different communities living in East London. “I think am deeply appreciative of the times we spent serving within the framework of the NYSC scheme there is positivism in the pragmatic lessons. Bankole Adebowale spoke with this writer in company of his wife who he told me served in Makurdi, Benue State about ten years even as he did his twelve calendar months service in Calabar, Cross Rivers State. Bankole told me that it may have been the commonality of their lessons imbibed during their respective NYSC schemes that fastracked their union. The wife, Mrs. Aisha who also spoke informed this writer that they met at the post graduate campus of a university in Scotland and started exchanging ideas on what was learnt or otherwise during their ‘splendid’ periods of NYSC. “Now I no longer see a person from outside of my Igala Community in Kogi state as a strange person. Mr. Bankole told this writer that he has rich recollections of how most of the people he met whilst serving in Makurdi, Benue State were more than willing to embrace him as an uncle just as he disclosed that his beautiful memories of his service years have positively made him a patriotic Nigerian who has consistently thought about the positive things his family will bring on board to contribute to civilization and sustainable development in Nigeria. Mr. Bankole further recalled that the Director-General, National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure had urged corps members to actively participate in skills acquisition trainings in order to make them self-reliant. Kazaure he told me gave this charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria

in Sokoto. To him, this initiative makes a lot of sense in such a way that a way has been found to marry the virtues of national integration with skills acquisitions which in effect makes economic empowerment of the youth very integral in the scheme of things at an institutional level. “More than eight skills acquisition programmes were designed for corps members in collaboration with some agencies to facilitate the training programmess,” the director-general was quoted by Bankole to have said. Bankole told me that he has consistently followed development in NYSC closely even from his base in London. Kazaure he said noted that the skills acquisition trainings were introduced to promote self-reliance and encourage entrepreneurship to enhance the nation’s economic growth. He, however, cautioned corps members against unnecessary travellings and urged them to be disciplined in their relationships with the NYSC authorities and their host communities. The director-general said that he was at “Wamakko Orientation Camp” to ensure corps members’ well-being and motivate them for the lined up programmes, aimed at preparing them for the future challenges. Kazaure advised them to put the nation’s development first; promote virtues and downplay sentiments in the interest of national unity. Bankole told this writer that he heard it on good authority that there has been impressive Improvement of the state of the various orientation camps nationwide. Under his watch all the hostel in all NYSC Orientation camps are wearing new looks with fans installed in the hostels. The quality of food cooked and served in camps is like never before. Corps members confess that they are served with Chicken and egg regularly in the camp. To be continued

2019: PACT, consensus and way forward (1)

Tope Fasua

I feel compelled to write about this because I had been broaching the issue and writing around it – and I had taken pains to discuss this with the parties that matter. Now that PACT (Presidential Aspirants Coming Together) has culminated in the way I predicted it would because of its many contradictions and naive assumptions, it is apt to recount how it all panned out. I woke up on August 31, 2018 to see a message from amiable Fela Durotoye calling for support and unity. It took me a while to reply the message. Fela is not someone you would dislike easily. Or want to dislike. He has a disarming, charming personality and is everyone’s pal. I loved him at first sight when I first met him like 15 years ago. He hasn’t changed. But when I replied, I made him know that my thinking is to see him and Kingsley Moghalu, myself and Sowore, on the final ballot representing different political parties. I am greedy for talent. I have an artistic streak in me and sometimes find it hard to choose between two beautiful pieces of art. Fela, Kingsley, Sowore and others have different hues of uniqueness that we must not discard, even for the sake of political expediency. Like I had advised the PACT before – and been ignored – we should spend more time before taking such an important decision as having a consensus candidate for the office of president of the federal republic. There is no point rushing to press when we should be heating up the system and throwing in all the good ideas we have to help our nation. More on this later. My initial reaction to the news of a consensus candidate was sadness because this situation could have been totally avoided. Why should one promising talent knock out another extremely promising talent when they

both could have continued adding value to Nigeria, even as aspirants? I must confess that personally, from a perspective of economic competence, international connections, perhaps even maturity that comes with age, I would have wanted to see a Kingsley Moghalu emerge, even though I felt it was too soon for that to happen. I had told him too. I used an analogy of how opportunistic predators like to isolate their prey for a ‘take down’. Already Kingsley’s campaign is facing the beginning of a backlash from government agencies as his bill boards are being defaced. I don’t even believe that Kingsley needed that group because he was doing great on his own and had covered much ground in comparison to some of us who don’t have as much resources. From the point of view of getting the best brains to rescue Nigeria, I couldn’t bear seeing Kingsley’s dreams truncated so early. He has to now find any and every way to keep keeping on but I can imagine the backlash he will get and how the usual suspects will try and make mincemeat of him. For Fela too, the crown he has obtained is fraught with problems, and of limited value. On one hand I know he had some issues at his party, the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN). The endorsement he has obtained may amount to some free advertisement for ANN, where he has a strong man called Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim to deal with. Ordinarily, whoever obtained the ‘consensus candidate’ crown was supposed to have a smooth sailing to compete with Buhari or whoever APC put forward. But now, it may just be that the garland will only be used to compete at a primary election and may probably be defeated because as we hear, Mr. Hashim has a lot of financial superpower to have the party around

his little finger by controlling all the state EXCOS! This crown is getting devalued. Then there is the fact that only seven people voted for the winner of the consensus. Fela had four votes, Kingsley had three. What is seven votes in a situation where over 70 people and counting are aspiring to the seat of the presidency? Is the PACT representative or approximative of the aspirations of Nigerians? What weight does PACT carry among the voting populace especially those who don’t have their beloved aspirants prominently represented in the group? Then with Kingsley’s ‘expected’ repudiation of the process and outcome, the crown lost even more value and became sort of a poisoned chalice. What Happened In PACT I attended the inaugural meeting of the young aspirants on July 31, 2018 at the behest of Mathias Tsado, who is an aspirant on the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP). We were like 15 on that day and guys like Ahmed Buhari, Sowore, Alistair Soyode, Eragbe Anselm, Sina Fagbenro-Byron, Jaiye Gaskiya and a few more were present. On that day the moment someone moved that we form a coalition, Sowore opted out and said he would not be part of any coalition because the word had already been abused. To the claim by some members that none of us could win single-handedly against Buhari, Sowore objected too. The man has great confidence that he can defeat Buhari and that is remarkable, given his tempo. I recall that it was Fela who came up with the name to call the group PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANTS COMING TOGETHER (PACT). I told him right there and then that that was plain genius! On that day, we later met at Charly Boy’s house in Abuja and Kingsley

Moghalu was there. He had sent a representative for the morning meeting. Charly Boy posed a question about the procedures we should adopt in arriving at a consensus. I was the second to last to speak but I believe my suggestion was more comprehensive. I advised on five steps: 1. We should first expand the group to at least 40 because many people were out there aspiring and if we were too few, our outcome will be useless as so many other people outside the PACT would still power on regardless; 2. We should maintain an opening for those who may want to opt out of the group up to a certain point, such that if they continue till the end they cannot say they are reneging. I preferred this to be in writing. 3. That we should have several more meetings and begin to invite the public to witness what we are doing – e.g. through Facebook Live – such as to have their buy-in. We should not rush it at all; 4. That we should then begin to organise debates among members so that Nigerian people can see and hear the plans we have for them and also increase the buy-in; 5. That if possible we should have an election before the election, by allowing all Nigerians who are interested to vote for who they choose among us. On this one I know that some of the members there present have more followership online and in diaspora than others but I believe that the long and drawn out process would at least build a good tempo for all of us and give legitimacy to the project. At the Charly Boy meeting someone also suggested that the first thing is for all aspirants to obtain their party candidacy and then return for proper discussions. To be continued

Editorial Commentary Kofi Annan and other African leaders on global stage

Times Guest Columnist Eric Teniola

Of all the books written by or on Kofi Atta Annan (1938-2018) none is more controversial than the 442 page book, The Best Intentions by James Traub, a New York Times magazine journalist, who enjoyed unprecedented access to Mr. Annan and his top aides for three years from 2003 to 2007. In the book, Traub described the Oil-for-Food scandal, the deep divide between those who wished to accommodate American critics and those who sought to confront them, and the failed attempt to act decisively against ethnic cleansing in Sudan. And he accounts for Annan’s attempt to respond to criticism of the United Nations (UN) with sweeping reform. The Best Intentions is both a fascinating, fly-onthe-wall account of Kofi Annan’s controversial two terms as secretary general of the United Nations and an important critical study of the institution that has carried the best hopes of the world since 1945. The other books, We the Peoples: A UN for the 21st Century, Confronting Anti-Semitism, Basic Facts, Interventions, etc. were written by Mr. Kofi Annan himself. In all the books, the conclusion I arrived at is that Chief Annan was an intellectual who operated in the world of the academics. His books matched his outstanding efforts at the United Nations, which he served meritoriously as secretary general from January 1997 to December 2006. His appointment to the headship of that body on January 1 1997 is the best thing that has happened to Africa’s diplomats and his leaving the body on December 1, 2006 with his integrity intact, was a success for the true African. By any analysis, the Kumasi born Ghanaian diplomat was a great man. He joined the United Nation in 1962 and rose through the ranks to the nadir of his calling. A lot has been said about this man and a lot will still be said about him. I need not repeat nor add or remove to what has been said. He represented Africa. And he behaved well, not minding the fact that he was our in-law at a time. He was lucky to have gotten the job as the chief scribe of the world’s number one multilateral organisation. He was first among equals. In Nigeria, we have outstanding diplomats too, who performed creditably and laboured for peace throughout their careers. For peace is the goal of every diplomat. A colleague of Annan in Nigeria is Chief Eliezar Chkwuemeka Anyaoku from Obosi in Idemili North local government of Anambra State, who served as the third secretary general of the Commonwealth of Nations. Married to Ebunola Olubunmi Solanke, Chief Anyaoku, who is the first African to hold such a post enlisted in the Foreign Service in 1962, following the assistance of the first prime minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Within a month of his entry into the service in April 1962, Anyaoku was appointed personal assistant to the permanent secretary of the Ministry for External Affairs. There he was closely involved in the process that led to the establishment of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) in May 1963. He was later posted to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. Like Kofi Annan, Chief Anyaoku wrote books and a number were also written on him. They include The Inside of the Modern Commonwealth, Managing Diversity In Our Contemporary World, Zimbabwe: Reflections of the Lancaster House, The Missing Headlines and others. Chief Peter Onu was another Nigerian diplomat. He served as the acting secretary-general of Organisation of African Unity between 1983 and 1985, succeeding Edem Kodjo. Onu was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Chief Simeon Olaosebikan Adebo (1913-1994),

the Okanlomo of Egbaland, once served as United Nation’s under-secretary general. He was also the chairman of a sub-committee that reached a compromise on the intractable and explosive sharia debates of the 1977 constituent assembly in Nigeria. To their credit, some diplomats in Nigeria rose to the post of foreign ministers. They include Major General Joseph Narven Garba who served between 1975 and 1978, Chief Emeka Anyaoku (1983), Dr. Ibrahim Gambari (1984-1985), Chief Matthew Mbu (1993), Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe (1993-1995), Chief Ignatius Olisemaka (1998-199), Chief Oluyemi Adeniji (2003-2006) and Mr. Olugbenga Ashiru (2011-2013). Professor Adebayo Adedeji was appointed executive secretary, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and assistant secretary-general of the United Nations (1975). He resigned from the ECA executive Secretary and under-secretary general of the United Nations in 1991. Ambassador Judith Sefi Attah began her career in the field of diplomacy as permanent delegate of Nigeria to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) from 1982 to 1986. She later served as permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (1986-1987); permanent secretary/director-general, Ministry of External Affairs (1987-1991), and Ambassador to Italy with concurrent accreditation to Greece and Cyprus (1991-1995). She was appointed minister, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development from 1995 to 1997. We also have Ambassador Aderemi Olagoke Esan, Ambassador Joy Ogwu, Ambassador Oladapo Fafowora, Ambassador Isaac Aluko Olokun, Ambassador Olu Otunla, and Ambassador George Achuluke Obiazor from Awo-Omamma in Oru East local government area of Imo State. Other ambassadors are Ignatius Julius Dawer Durlong, Arthur Christopher Izuegbunam Mbanefo, Olusola Shanu, Godknows Igali, Martine Gereng S., Nkem Wadibia Anyawu, Elizabeth Bolere Ketebu, Florentina Ukonga and late ambassador J. J. Ayorinde. Ambassador Hamzat Ahmadu was appointed Ambassador in 1975 and posted to the USSR. Between 1978 and 1981, Ahmadu was Nigerian Ambassador to The Netherlands, and Cameroon (1982-1984). He was appointed permanent secretary, Ministry of External Affairs (1986-1987); and was again appointed Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America (USA) in 1987. Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji (1934-2017) began his working career as administrative officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1960, and served in various capacities in Nigerian Missions Overseas, including Washington DC (1960-1963); Freetown (1964-1965); Accra (1966-1997); New York (the Permanent Mission, 1970-1973); and Khartoum. Adeniji was appointed Nigeria’s ambassador to Austria between 1976-1977; Switzerland, 1977-1981; and France, 19881991. He was appointed director general, Ministry of External Affairs from 1991 to 1994; and Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to Central Africa Republic between 1998-1999. Ambassador Adeniji has served as member and chairman of the International Jury of the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education, 1990-1995; member, UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board of Trustees of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (1984-1991); and was the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to the Republic of Sierra Leone. The efforts of these diplomats mentioned here and many not mentioned, are hereby commended. May the soul of Chief Kofi Attah Annan continue to rest in peace. May the souls of other diplomats who have gone to the world beyond, continue to rest in peace too.

OUR POSITION

FG, honesty and matters arising Two security guards, Achi Daniel and Francis Emepueaku that found and returned huge amounts of dollars and other valuables to the owner at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos have received accolades across the country and beyond. Apart from the guards, Dr. Banji Oyegbami, who spoke of their good deeds, also need to be celebrated. When he wrote that his ‘hope is not lost’ on social media, little did he know that he was heralding the fortune and integrity of two Halogen Security guards for doing what is uncommon in Nigeria. Dr. Oyegbami, a medical doctor’s practical experience at MMIA, started on August 18, 2018 when he went to the airport with his driver to pick up his very close friend and his wife that arrived from Atlanta United States of America on board Delta Airline. They parked their car on the first floor of the new multi-level building car park and loaded their bags into the boot of the vehicle while his friend’s wife out of excitement forgot her handbag on the trolley and drove off. They journeyed for about one and a half hours in terrible traffic without realising that the woman’s handbag was not in the car when they received a phone call from the woman’s daughter in the US. They went back to the airport to meet the security guards of Halogen Securities as Mr. Achi Daniel found the bag and gave it to his supervisor, Mr. Francis Emepueaku, as lost but found items. The woman cross-checked items in the handbag and confirmed that the items were complete with iPhone, large sums of dollars in labeled envelops sent through her to people in Nigeria, wrist watches she planned as gift items and other documents and valuables were intact. Unlike some Nigerians, Daniel, who said that he had worked in the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos in the past, explained that he had returned sums recovered in the cause of his duty to their owners before now. He insisted that the contents in the bag was never attractive to him, but lamented that some people close to him were already making jest of him for returning the contents in the bag. He, however, said that he was never discouraged by their mockery. He said: “If the money was in multi-millions of foreign currencies, I would still have returned it. I saw the bag on a trolley and I said to myself that somebody must have forgotten it there; it was not padlocked and without opening it, I went to the ground floor with the bag to meet with my supervisor. “Inside the bag, I saw a mobile phone, jewelries and huge amount of money in dollars and several other documents. At that point, we went straight to the manager’s office who now put a call through to somebody in Atlanta Georgia, who happened to be the daughter of the owner of the bag. “When they returned, they were jittery that some of the items in the bag may have vanished, but after cross-checking it, she discovered that everything was intact and the family attempted to give us some amount of money as a form of appreciation, which we rejected, telling them that we were doing our job. “It never crossed my mind to steal the money and I wouldn’t have done that because it wasn’t my first time of finding such and returning to the owners. No amount of money would make me to take what doesn’t belong to me. I believe my own time will

come and at the right time”. Daniel, a widower, with four children, believes that only God will reward honest people no matter how long it takes. It is very rare especially in the country at this difficult times for someone to see huge amounts of money not in local currency and hand it over to the owner. But despite the fame and rewards both guards are enjoying presently, many Nigerians are of the view that more needed to be done, especially from President Muhammadu Buhari. Others are of the view that Mr. President owes them an invitation to the Aso Villa because of their show of love and demonstration of high level of integrity which is rare these days The two guards have changed the narrative of certain negative image of Nigeria abroad. Their singular action, which has drawn world attention, remains commendable and should be appreciated by all in order to encourage others that honesty pays. Though the duo were given N500,000 by the management of Halogen Securities, President Buhari should not end the recognition with just writing commendation letters to the duo. We wish to state with high sense of responsibility that President Buhari should invite the two guards to Aso Rock for a presidential handshake in order to tell Nigerians and indeed the world that it is a new dawn in the land. We are of the opinion that the Federal Government should give National Awards to Daniel and Emepueaku for the exemplary conduct they have played in telling the world that despite the hard economic situation in Nigeria and poor financial background, there are still honest citizens.

Travellers’ safety: Ondo, NURTW Short News Free school feeding: 8,536 introduce insurance policy The Ondo State Government in Collaboration with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state has introduced an insurance welfare package for travellers in the state. The programme tagged: “Ondo State Passengers Welfare and Security Transit Scheme” will be launched on Tuesday and will be handled by an insurance firm. Addressing a press conference on Friday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Tobi Ogunleye said the scheme was designed basically for the welfare and safety of travellers in the state. Ogunleye revealed that at every motor parks in the state, passengers would be requested to pay an additional fee of N100 as premium to their transport fees. He noted that in the events of accident, victims and their relatives would be entitled to some compensation as determined by the insurance firm. The governor’s aide disclosed that the scheme would also ensure security of lives

of travellers as it would put an end to road side loading by commercial drivers. Ogunleye added that it would now become an offense for drivers to carry passengers along the road. His words, “If you notice in recent time, the menace of highway ritual killings and kidnapping is rampant and most of the victims always accuse the drivers’ union of complicity. “This is what actually informs the road transport workers to bring this initiative in order to watch their image clean of the accusations of this unwarranted situation. That is the basic background of the scheme. “Most importantly is the question of safety and security of passengers. The idea of writing and keeping manifest at various motor parks has been for fun. “What this scheme means as being embraced by the Ondo State government through the ministry of Transportation, we want to see how to take and ensure lives of our passengers from these motor parks.”

Explaining that the scheme is not about the money, he said, “Apart from data gathering, this scheme will be backed with an insurance cover of reasonable fee of a token of N100 from Ondo State and if you are coming to the state another, N100. It is not about the money but about the safety in case of any accident. “It was the initiatives of the NURTW in the state and we believe apart from writing the names of passengers at the parks, it has to be backed by insurance cover. They now have an understanding with a private insurance company and they brought it to the government and we studied the proposal very well”. Also speaking, the Principal Partner of the Insurance scheme, Aadel Consults and Associates, Dr. Isaac-Tony Ogidi said the firm is partnering with the government and the NURTW to ensure safety of passengers in the state. “We have been doing in other state. It is designed to ensure that passengers have a kind of security”.

I have experience to govern Nigeria, understands the pains, says Dankwambo Sunday Nwakanma, Umuahia A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant and former governor of Gombe state, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo says, he is eminently qualified to run the country as its president as he understands the pains the people are going through. Dr. Dankwabo stated this in Umuahia through his campaign media Director/spokesperson, Dr. Ayoade Adewepo, who said they were in the state to speak with the PDP delegates in the state and to canvass for their support towards the elections coming up in October at the National Convention elections for the PDP. Dr. Ayoade said the visit was intended to “talk to them to let them see reasons why the candidature of Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo is important to Nigeria and for Nigerians and the reason why there should be a

change in the face of governance. He said Dr. Dankwambo is the face of new Nigeria. “He is the promise that Nigeria has always wanted and the essence which this country was created and what the founding fathers and leaders are thinking of in a leader when the country had independence in 1960”. Dr. Ayoade said the Gombe State Governor has been in private and public service and is a technocrat and politician who understands the pain of Nigerians and “not too old or young to run as a 56 year old mans. “He is a child of Independence and understands what Nigerians are going through”. Dankwabo has had the privilege of working as an Accountant General of Gombe State, and that of the federation, as well as being the man who put up the Single Treasury Account, the cashless policy the country is enjoying today and has had the privilege to rule and run

Gombe for almost eight years. According to his campaign spokesman, within this period, Dankwambo took Gombe to the next level in the areas of education, infrastructure, and health sector, and in the area of security, Gombe, is right in the middle of all the troubled states, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa insurgency. Gombe is the only state without insurgents as Dr. Dankwambo understands what it means to be the chief security officer of a state. “In the area of economy, he is experienced as the Accountant General of the state and of the Federation and he has ran the books of the country and that of the state and has all the experience to run the country properly”, Ayoade added, pointing out that Dr. Dankwambo also stands with restructuring. Medical expert donates multi-million judicial complex to ANSG Stories: John Ndu, Awka An America-based Medical Director of Las Vegas Pain Institute & Medical Centre, Dr. Godwin Maduka, has tasked Ndi Anambra on what he claimed to be five characteristics of success. According to Maduka, who recently donated a judicial complex with judges’ quarter worth over N250 million to Anambra State government for promotion of justice and fair hearing, five points or five characteristics to success applicable to individuals, institutions, states and nations are to have undying love for God, the creator. “You have to pay him 100% homage. People must believe in God. The reasons to believe in God and love him is because He engineered everything in the world. If you look at an individual he created, you will discover that He gave him everything he needs in life for a purpose. These include the eyes to see, the ears to hear, the nose to smell, the mouth to eat, and other parts of life. If you go out there, you will see the boy, the girl. “The number two is hardwork. Even human being loves hardwork. If you visit a construction site, you will find one individual who is hardworking and does not grudge or care to know who is watching him or not. “The number three is relayed gratification. Every country, institution or individual knows when they reached their potential. If you have not, strive

to reach it. When you reach there, you will be identified. Our country has a lot of resources with which she will reach her potential. We need to empower our people to reach their potential individually and collectively not minding their tribes, religion, sex, etc. We must not take a back seat. God did not create us to take a second seat. “The number four is impression. A nation can impress the whole world by how it treats its citizens, how they are living, creativity, how they appear, etc. For example, we should learn from the western world and others. People look at you first before they look at what you will say. “The number five is interpersonal skills, intercountry skills, interindustry skills, etc. Individual, a nation or institution needs to identify their skills. They need to use their skills and respect others so they will respect them back. Interpersonal skills lead to selfactualization, job, promotions, etc.” The American based medical director, it would be recalled, had built the court complex, over three years ago, however, it was not put into use due to petitions from some aggrieved members of his community, Umuchukwu, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Speaking to journalists during the commissioning of the complex in Umuchukwu, Orumba South local Government Area of the state, Maduka decried the scarcity of judges and series of petitions which had hindered the takeoff of judicial activities in the complex. He said: “I did not build the court for it not to be in use but in Nigeria there are

some things that make people’s effort not to be fulfilled. Now that the court is open and gazetted, I believe that judges will be sent there for judicial activities, it is now a judiciary complex.” The Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by the state Head of Service, Mr. Harry Udu, extolled the philanthropist for his contribution to the development of the state, a kind gesture, he claimed was in line with his think home philosophy. Obiano, while describing the High Court as one of the best High Court edifices in the country, called on the people of the state anywhere in the world to take a cue from him and invest at home. In a remark, the wife of late Biafran warlord, Chukwemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, expressed happiness on how Dr. Maduka has been imparting the lives of people positively for years, and asked other Igbos in Diaspora to bring part of their wealth home as Maduka had done as it would help to eradicate high rate of poverty and dearth of employment in the region. On his part, a member of Board of Trustee of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, appealed to the state government and the judiciary to urgently put the complex to use. “My appeal is that this effort should be encouraged, he has spent fortune to build this complex and since 2015 it has not been put to use. I call on the state government and the state judiciary to identify and support this great man so that others can have the mind to follow suit,” he noted.

Top 50 brands: Dangote now most valuable brand in Nigeria Motolani Oseni Dangote has emerged the most valuable brand among the top 50 brands in Nigeria for 2018 which were unveiled at the weekend in Lagos. This is coming barely three months after the brand was adjudged the most admired brand of African origin by Consumers in a brand rating coordinated by South Africa based Brand Leadership in conjunction with Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Brand Nigeria, the Agency that coordinated the survey in Nigeria, in its report lauded the efforts of the handlers of the Dangote Brand because this is the first time a Nigerian brand would be achieving the feat since 2013. Unveiling the list of the top 50 brands at an event attended by top executives of leading corporate organizations in the country as well as stakeholders in Marketing and

Advertising Industry, Mr. Taiwo Oluboyede, the Head of Brand Nigeria explained that 46 percent of the top brands amounting to 23 are Nigerian brands. Giving the highlights of the brands rating, he stated that Promasidor Nigeria Limited emerged the highest gainer jumping 15 points from last year, the followed by the trio of BUA, Nine Mobile and Olam all of which moved 12 points from last year position, while seven brands, Conoil, Channels TV, Union Bank, Access Bank, Chi, Toyota, and GTBank maintained their positions. He stated further that Fidelity bank came as a first entrant this year and Stallion Group making a fresh return to the top 50 brands this having exited before. The top 50 brands in Nigeria, Soboyede maintained are the brands that have succeeded in delivering their promises to the consumers. “They are fast growing in value and they are the drivers of our economy. The top brands this

year are those that have been able to analyse needs, see opportunities by creating solutions to them and communicating same to the consumers. “They have also become so good at it that the consumers often refer to them with the name of the need they meet that is their products or services. These brands have found how to deliver something special often times.” Giving insights into how the evaluation of the top 50 brands was carried out, Soboyede said: “we used the Brand Strength Model (BSM index). It is model that measures a brand’s ability to deliver on its promise to the consumers from the consumer’s point of view. The model uses basic qualitative elements and there are seven variables that goes into the BSM model”. According to the variables starts with a test of people’s knowledge and affinity with the brands operational in Nigeria. We had a top

on the mind survey where people tell us brads that easily come to their mind or brand they can recall. “Other variables in the model are innovation-this is a test how innovative a brand service delivery is; Quality-this checks some factors that enhance consumer’s confidence in product delivery; Category Leadership-this is a classification of brands within their industry; Online engagements-this checks how active the brand’s online platforms are and how engaging it has been from last evaluation; National Spreadthis checks operational presence of a brand across the country.” Chief Corporate Communication Officer of the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina said the management was not surprised at the ranking because the company has continuously deepened and delivered on its core values is to be a world-class enterprise that is passionate about the quality of life of the people and giving high returns to stakeholders.

Post-harvest damages: Nigeria loses N10bn annually The Country Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Dr Michael Ojo, says that preliminary research shows that Nigeria is losing up to N10 billion on post-harvest damages. Ojo made the revelation in Lagos on the sidelines of the just-concluded “NutriPitch’’, the Nourish Nigeria Challenge. The Nourish Nigeria Challenge is a programme by SBN in partnership with Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and supported by FATE Foundation.

The programme received 140 applications for participation in the challenge from 26 states across Nigeria that were admitted into NutriPitch. The entrepreneurs at the event were made to go through an accelerator programme which was addressed by Nutrition and Food Safety, Value Chain Analysis, Financial Management and investor readiness. The top five competitors are, however, billed to represent Nigeria in October 2018 at the regional conference in Nairobi Kenya. On the impact of post-harvest

loss to the economy, Ojo said that it was worrisome to see the volume of essential food items wasted either during transportation or unsold while some were dying of hunger. “Basically, from the research conducted, and the information we have, it reveals that half of our agricultural produce is lost, especially nutritious foods between the harvest and the consumers. “Some of these food items also perish as a result of not being sold. I think no word can quantify this because over N100 billion a year is

lost to post-harvest loss because of the perishability of these foods. “This is a lost opportunity to those that cannot have access to those foods and to the agricultural sector at large, we really need to look inward to fight these losses. “In spite of the fact that there are some that cannot afford these foods, yet that we are losing them in the tune of billions is a cause for concern,’’ he said. Ojo said that technological researches would help if invested in by the government and private sectors.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA has recorded over $16.98million as Ticket Sales Charge TSC from international and over N9.16billion from local airlines between the months of January to August this year through its automation system. Director General, NCAA Captain Muktar Usman in a chat with newsmen in Lagos said air travel demand as projected by the International Air Transport Association, IATA will continue to grow with more connectivity, adding that the second position of Africa in the region in the July 2018 passenger traffic of 6.8% increase can be surpassed with direct link in the continent. Usman said,”there has always been that projection that aviation in Africa is growing and the rate of growth is one of the highest in the world. We lack that internal connectivity within the Africa region and once those sectors are developed you would see much more increase in the movements because for example, if you want to go to Niger as of today, you hardly have any direct link even though airlines have been designated. “One of the ways of going there, is to go to Lome and then go to Niamey when from Abuja it shouldn’t be more than one hour you spend a whole day and off course and as a lot of cost you have to go to Lome through Asky and maybe take you either direct to Niamey or when they are coming back they go through Burkina Faso and so on, but once we start having this connectivity direct, the cost would also be expected to reduce and then more people would be able to afford to fly, so it is expected that the increase would continue”, he said. Statistics released by the regulatory Agency reveals that passenger traffic in the last 8 months has hit 2.4 million with 27, 000 flight count. International passenger traffic from January-August show that 10 of the airlines are carrying the traffic with Ethiopian airline taking the lead with over 134.104, followed by Emirates with 107.217, British Airways, 86.249 and Turkish airlines,70.392 passengers. Others are Air France, 70.144, KLM Royal Dutch, 63.990, Virgin Atlantic 63.448, Delta airline,39.196, Qatar, 38.706 and South African Airways, 36.868 passengers. For Domestic passenger Traffic, 7 airlines are pulling their weight with AirPeace in the forefront with over 34.664, with Dana Air trailing with 330.370, AZMAN, 245.437 and Arik, 177.061 passengers. Others are; Medview, 156.226, Aero, 138.146 and Overland, 78.166 passengers. The NCAA DG said, there has been boost in travel activities since the country came out of recession and more is expected in the coming days and months.

Buhari approves MD, EDs for Fintech firm, Azimo Nigeria Minting Company partners interswitch on Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Abbas Masanawa as Managing director of the Nigeria Security Printing And Minting Company (NSPMC). The president also approved the appointment of Abubakar Sule Minjibir, Chris Orewa and Tunji Kazeem as Executive Directors (EDs) in the Nigeria printing and minting company. According to Emefiele, the tenure of the current MD, Joseph Ugboh and executive director finance, Abbas Masanawa ended on August 31, 2018. He noted that these directors took

over as executive management members of the company in 2014. He explained that the Nigeria security printing and minting company is wholly owned subsidiary of the CBN with sole responsibility to produce Nigeria’s currency and a range of other important security document. Prior to take over in August 2014, the CBN governor pointed out that the NSPMC was unfortunately a loss making entity and upon take over ,the company returned to profitability with profit before taxes of N611m, N4.6bn and N12.1bn during financial years ended 2015,2016 and 2017 respectively. He contended that with these results, the management has displayed strong dexterity to turn around moribund institutions. He stated, “By the existing organisational structure and to attain it’s full potentials, the NSPMC should be managed by a team comprising of Managing director and four executive directors .

“To ensure that the company continues the track record of strong profitability, I wish to respectfully present to you for your thoughtful consideration and kind approval candidates for the position of managing director and executive directors. “Your excellency we have been discreetly, uprightly, meticulously conducting the search for a suitable replacement for Joseph Ugboh under the guide post of three principles- intrinsic quality, geopolitical balance, working experience. “Please permit me to note that given the resume of the candidates and having considered other personality, characteristic and capability related facts,i am convinced that the best persons for the position of Managing Director and executive directors are Messrs Abbas Masanawa( MD) , Tunji Kazeem, Chris Orewa and Abubakar Suleiman Minjibir respectively as EDs,” he stated .

2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year records 641 entries

These appointments follow the retirement of Mrs. Roseline Okwechime, Mr. Adekunle Olumide Alhaji Ja’afaru Paki and Mr Yahaya Zekeri, with effect from August 30, 2018. “I am pleased to welcome Erelu Adebayo, Angela Aneke, Abdulqadir Bello and Kayode Fasola to the Group Board,” said Tony O. Elumelu, the Group Chairman of the Bank. “These men and women bring a wealth of experience in their fields and will be tremendous assets, as we deliver on our mission to become the leading Pan-African financial institution in all our countries of operation. “I am particularly pleased that two of the newly appointed Non-Executive Directors are women, bringing the total number of women to four, a further demonstration of our commitment to

ensuring equality for both men and women,’ added the Group Chairman. Mr. Elumelu thanked the retiring directors for their contribution, hard work and commitment to UBA, “I would like to express my appreciation to our retiring Directors for their leadership and dedication to UBA and for their contribution to an already impressive 2018. I wish them the very best in their future endeavours.” This announcement comes on the heels of the Bank’s strong H1 2018 performance with a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of N58.1billion. The bank also has offices in New York City and in Paris.

instant Money Transfers Benjamin Omoike European digital money transfer service, Azimo, has announced a strategic partnership with leading African payments business, Interswitch Group, to further enable instant money transfers from 23 countries in Europe to any customer in Nigeria. Speaking on the partnership, Michael Kent, Founder and CEO of Azimo, stated that Nigeria’s teeming population makes it Azimo’s biggest market. He said: “A huge and rapidly growing population, coupled with the explosion of smartphone ownership, means that Africa, and Nigeria in particular, is one of the most exciting fintech markets on the planet. “We look forward to working with fintech leader, Interswitch, to build new digital low-cost financial services that drive inclusion and transform the financial lives of our customers in both the UK and Africa.” Digital money transfers play a significant role in the growth of Nigeria’s economy – the largest in Africa. Remittances to the nation were worth $22 billion in 2017 - the equivalent of 5.6 percent of Nigeria’s GDP and higher than the country’s oil revenues. By reaching millions of customers in Nigeria, Azimo’s partnership with Interswitch

will also help to tackle the problem of financial exclusion in a country where 40 percent of the population is unbanked. Commenting on the new alliance, Mitchell Elegbe, Group Managing Director and CEO at Interswitch, said: “We formed this partnership with Azimo as they are a global leader in crossborder payments with great tech capability and a strong knowledge of our core markets. This agreement is a key milestone in our common strategy to better serve the Nigerians where ever they are located around the world.” In the longer term, the deal will see the two companies build new mobile-based financial services for Interswitch’s rapidly expanding customer base of over 25 million people in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The partnership comes at a time when British Prime Minister Teresa May, on a recent visit to South Africa, divulged that the scale of opportunity for London’s businesses across Africa is huge. She noted that 111 African companies have already come to London to raise the funds needed to invest and grow, hence their desire to ensure that the UK is the partner of choice for African nations. Nigeria is among the top five countries for inbound remittances with over $20bn received every year, according to the World Bank.

Godwin Anyebe Submission of entries for the 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year closed with a record total of 641 total entries filed from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, representing the highest ever record of entries submitted by teachers from across the country since the initiative began in 2015. Although, the 2017 edition attracted 500 entries from 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, against 350 entries recorded in 2016 from 31 states, which was lower than 540 entries received from 27 states of the federation and the FCT at the maiden edition in 2015. The Corporate Affairs Adviser of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Kufre Ekanem recently in Lagos noted that this year’s performance is a confirmation of the growing interest in the initiative by teachers across the country. Ekanem explained that just like in the previous years, the 2018 entries were validated by the stringent project assessors who trimmed them down to 429 entries after a thorough and painstaking scrutiny. He added that the valid entries will now be subjected to further scrutiny and assessment process by the Panel of Judges to pick the State Champions. “From the State Champions, the 10 best entries will thereafter be invited for another round of assessment where the panel will further subject them to rigorous scrutiny against set criteria in order to determine who truly should be named the Maltina Teacher of the Year. On October 11th, 2018, the winners will be announced and celebrated at a grand event at the Muson Center, Marina, Lagos,” he said.

APC govt not delivering on promises made to Nigerians – Yunusa Tanko Dr Yunusa Tanko is the National Chairman of the National Conscience Part (NCP). In this interview with some journalists,Tanko speaks on issues affect his party and the nation. PATRICK OKOHUE was there for The Daily Times. The National Assembly’s entrance was recently blocked by men of the Department of State Services (DSS), following crisis that trailed the defection of the Senate President and some other senators. What is your reaction to this? That is why it is very good to practice what you preach. These particular leaders of APC came with the progressive idea, but what we are seeing is completely different from what they preached. And there is this impunity by the government, there is this way in which they tried to cow the people. There is the way this government is blocking the opposition from making inroad, that is not democracy. And people who fought for this democracy will be turning in their grave to see this kind of thing happening. There are many democratic ways of doing this kind of things rather than forcing the people. And I am even hearing that any political person in the opposition even if they have stolen government money to stupor if they change overnight to become members of the APC they are protected. That’s nepotism, it is totally unacceptable and you are crying that you are fighting corruption. That is not the way to fight corruption. When it is your own member you try to cover him with Vaseline oil. If it is on the other side you inflame it with all kinds of petrol and kerosene to put that person on flame. That is not acceptable and so what you see they are doing by trying to frozen the account of Benue and Akwa Ibom state is unacceptable. Guiding people to commit violation of the constitution is unacceptable. We in the human rights community who fought for this democracy will fight with all our might against impunity. This is because it is the same democracy that we fought for that they are now enjoying, that brought them to power and that is not what the Nigeria people bargained for at all. You can now see that the government of the day is now in defence. The police and the EFCC are on the defence. They have committed an heinous crime against the people and they have gone against the tenets of democracy and that is even enough for them to resign from government. But APC is saying it has done well and that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves a second term next year, don’t you agree? They can say whatever they want to say, they are not the ones that would decide next year. People can see that there is a clear cut difference between what they are claiming and the reality. Let me ask you a simple question; is it true that there is an improvement in the power sector in the country? Are

the population of unemployed youths increasing or decreasing? Has the price of commodities in the market reduced to the barest minimum? Has the security of lives and properties of Nigerian people guarantee than before, no. So almost all the areas have not improved. It is only in this government that payment of salaries is a celebrated issue. So you foresee problem for Buhari in realising his second term ambition? Yes, because the people did not see exactly what they were promised. What we have been seeing are promises upon promises. The people have known the differences between what they said before they got to power and what they are doing. It is quite unfortunate that they are doing different things from what they promised the Nigeria people. How do you see the recent defection of senators from the ruling APC to the PDP? That is why it is good that those who live in glass houses don’t throw stones. The way this government got to power is the way they are been shown the way out of power. If you remember that time in 2014 that there were serious defection from PDP, that was what brought Saraki, Tambuwal and others and they celebrated it . But they couldn’t manage it to the extent that the National Assembly passed another Electoral Act that the President has not signed. Had it been that Electoral Act was signed into law , you cannot just jump ship from one political party to the other like that. It took care of the issue of cross carpeting. And that would have advanced the political gain of a party like ours, because after winning elections most of our candidates now go to the juicy political parties . How will you react to the spate of killings in the North Central part of the country? The killing is happening all over the Northern part of the country, but more especially in Zamfara State. We have in Adamawa State, we have in Taraba State. It is not only peculiar to North Central as it were. Let me tell you it is politically motivated. But the government of the day gives it room to happen. This is because the government of the day lacks the political will to solve the crisis when it started rearing its ugly head. The politicians cashed in on it to enthrone their own wish. I got annoyed because there is no way you can use Nigerians in any part of this country for a politically motivated killings. The government has shown weakness, the government has shown lack of

Tanko

capacity, the government has shown weakness in how to move the people together. There have been Fulani leading cattle for century and we have not heard unabated killings that is unacceptable to the Nigeria people. So I am calling on Nigerian people as well as the government to show the political will to solve this particular problem or else it would consume them . What is the state of NCP? The NCP has grown from a political party that is only known on the streets shouting and talking, to a political party that can be reckoned with. I am saying this without fear or favour. You remember the history of NCP. NCP is a movement of human rights .Majority of the members are human rights activists. Activism is

different from politicking. When I took over the leadership of this party I promised the members of the party that we will be able to defend the integrity of the party. That it would survive and we will revive it and we will win election. Out of the three promises I made for the National Conscience Party during my tenure as chairman, I have achieved two. The two were to make sure that the party survived. And I was in court close to a year and spent about eight million naira on litigation. During this time many of our members from outside, no contribution came from anybody. But we were able to survive and the party has now become a bride. Everybody is looking at it now as a force to be reckoned with. We went to every state of the federation. We

They can say whatever they want to say, they are not the ones that would decide next year. People can see that there is a clear cut difference between what they are claiming and the reality. Let me ask you a simple question; is it true that there is an improvement in the power sector in the country? Are the population of unemployed youths increasing or decreasing? Has the price of commodities in the market reduced to the barest minimum? Has the security of lives and properties of Nigerian people guarantee than before

don’t have nominated people in the executive of the party now we have elected people. I was able to go to 36 states of the federation and we have instituted elected executive nationwide. People would ask how do I get money to do all these. I have people and I used the talents God has given to me and do a little bit of property sales and I was able to get support of some people. I sunk a lot of money into NCP at the expense of my family’s comfort. So all the executive you see in the states for NCP were elected according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the NCP Constitution. The second tenure I told members that we need to be in the scheme of politics because we need to win election. And we are going into alliance so that we could be known as a prominent party .Today we have not less than four presidential aspirants, it has never been so in the history of the party. People are contesting, people are interested, people are challenging each other that they want to contest under NCP. So it is a good development for me and I am happy that we have reached the pinnacle of the existence of the party. Your party has gone into alliance with the PDP and 36 other political parties. How will this work out since you said you have more than four presidential aspirants? The memorandum of understanding that we signed, I pray you see it. The MOU said we are going to work together to produce a joint presidential candidate. That means each party must have produced a presidential candidate. And for me the target is for the NCP to be able to win an election. It is extremely clear that the NCP does not have fund to carry out some of its activities. Even the members don’t even pay their membership dues. And you know in Nigeria today, if you don’t have logistic money to carry out campaign it is like you are just barking by the side. So you need capable hands so we want to select out of our candidates those who have capacity and popularity so that other political parties who have funds would be able to support us and we will also be able to support them. At the end of it all, it may even be that our candidates will go for election in many states including presidential election. So that way, we now have a possibility of winning elections. And the question many people would ask is, why PDP? It is not only about PDP, but national interest. If you go alone for example, PDP want to win election, Labour Party want to dethrone the current government, SDP want to dethrone the current government, so all of us have a common goal. It is very clear if we go alone we cannot dethrone the current government, so why don’t we come together so that we can be able to achieve a common goal.

I’m not afraid of credible polls in 2019 -Buhari Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed in Beijing, China, that as a beneficiary of free and fair elections, he is not afraid of a credible process in 2019. Buhari also reaffirmed his commitment to making sure that the 2019 polls, under his watch, will be credible. Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in China on Sunday, Buhari pledged that Nigerians eligible to vote in the next general elections will be allowed to freely elect candidates of their choice. The President said, ‘‘I have no fear about free and fair elections because that is what brought me to the present position. I know what I went through and very few Nigerians could boast of trying four times to contes for the presidency. ‘‘Those interested in participating in the elections must get their PVCs, register in their constituency and elect anybody of their choice across ethnicity and religion. ‘‘The Nigerian police, law enforcement agencies and INEC must respect the people to express their wishes.” Citing recent elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi states, the president said the country had made progress relative to elections conducted in the past years. On security issues, the president reaffirmed that his government has succeeded in curtailing Boko Haram insurgents in the country, adding that the terrorist group no longer controls any part of the country. He attributed the success to operations of security agencies deployed to counter insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country. He said, ‘‘You will all recall that we contested the last election basically on three issues, which includes security, especially in the North-east. ‘‘The Boko Haram used to occupy quite a number of local governments in Borno State but they are not in anyone now. They

have resorted to a very dangerous way of terrorism by indoctrinating young people, mostly girls and attacking soft targets, churches, mosques and marketplaces. Regarding herders and farmers clashes in Nigeria, Buhari told Nigerians in the Diaspora that while security agencies are doing their best to curtail the clashes, the Nigerian media need to complement the efforts through objective and informed reportage. He appealed to the Nigerian media to make an attempt at understanding the cultural and historical implications of some of the misunderstanding between herders and farmers. He said, ‘‘To my disappointment, there are a number of things which the members of the press in Nigeria do not make enough efforts, in my observation, to study the historical antecedents of issues that are creating national problems for us.’’ According to the president, due to the effects of climate change, a farm that used to belong to 5 people now belong to 50 people, the weather condition, particularly the rainy season is now unpredictable. The president partly blamed the farmer’s herders’ controversy on the shrinking of the Lake Chad, which has forced many cattle nomads to seek greener pastures for their herds in other parts of the country. On Nigeria-China relations, the president applauded China’s generosity and contribution to the development of Nigeria, citing the successful completion of the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, built by the Chinese, and ongoing works on Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano railway routes. He said Nigeria and China are also negotiating on the Mambilla project. Buhari also advised Nigerians planning to travel abroad for ‘‘greener pastures’’ to do so legitimately and not to expect too much from their countries of destination. He said, “You cannot seek greener pastures in a place where you are not respected because of the colour of your skin or your lack of education or other things. Personally, I think you will earn more respect when you remain at home and get a job.”

Blaise Matuidi: I now understand why Cristiano Ronaldo has five Ballons d’Or

Blaise Matuidi says he has a better understanding of why Cristiano Ronaldo has won five Ballons d’Or in his career, hailing his new Juventus team-mate as a “working monster”. Juve lured the Portuguese star to Turin this summer in the most highprofile move of the summer as they look to maintain their dominance of the Italian league and improve their chances of Champions League success. The 33-year-old is yet to find his first goal for Massimiliano Allegri’s team so far, drawing a blank in victories

over Parma, Lazio and Chievo. But former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Ronaldo is expected to get off the mark before too long after scoring 44 times in as many games last season. And Matuidi has already been impressed by the five-time Champions League winner and is enjoying playing in the same team so far. “He’s the best player in the world, and it’s a lot of fun playing with him,” the French midfielder said. “He’s a working monster. He

g22

arrives first and leaves last. He’s working and working … I’ve never seen that and I understand better why he has five Ballons d’Or.” Despite Ronaldo’s lack of goals, the Bianconeri have a perfect record after three games in Serie A and face Sassuolo in their next game. The Italian giants have been drawn in a group with Ronaldo’s former side United as well as Valencia and Young Boys in the Champions League. Their European adventure begins at the Mestalla when they visit Valencia in September 19.

NFF election: No plan to disqualify Amaju Pinnick, Aminu Maigari – Sani Katu Chairman, Electoral Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Sani Katu, has dismissed concerns that the committee has concluded plans to disqualify top contenders in forthcoming election into the NFF Executive Committee. Katu allayed the fears in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday. A source who preferred not to be mentioned had told NAN that plans have been concluded to disqualify former NFF President Aminu Maigari and embattled current NFF boss Amaju Pinnick. The plan according to the anonymous source is to disqualify both contestants during the screening exercise and leave only one candidate Taiwo Ogunjobi knowing that he might not have the support of the congress for the NFF top job. “After the screening and disqualification of candidates, the electoral committee will open the nomination form for 5 days to pave way for more people to pick form including Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC). “Ogunjobi and Dikko might be the only ones in the final race and in the end,

the LMC will emerge “Other popular candidates from the zones might be disqualified also before the final contest,” the source said. But Katu told NAN that the committee had no plan to disqualify any candidate that met the requirement set in the electoral guideline. “We are already screening candidates and we will be holding our meeting tomorrow (Monday) to know the next step. “There is no plan to disqualify anybody that is qualified. We have election guideline that guides us. We asked contestants that want to occupy positions to come and obtain a form and fill it according to the guidelines of the election. “Once we are satisfied with the requirements, I don’t see any reason one should be disqualified; we intend to screen and find out whether the contestants are qualified, and once they are qualified, they are qualified. “There is no way we can disqualify somebody that is qualified. We are an independent body and we are not going to do anything that is contrary to the guidelines; it’s very clear,” Katu said.

He however, said that there might be change of activities in the timetable if need be but that would be decided in the committee’s meeting scheduled for Monday. “We cannot rule out the possibility of change of date based on election phenomena; we published a timeline but anything can happen at any time but for now, we are working with our schedule.” The NFF electoral committee chairman noted that his members were not perturbed or distracted by the current leadership crisis in the country’s football house. The timetable for the NFF election showed that intending candidates would buy and return their forms between Aug. 17 and Aug. 24, while screening takes place from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29 with names of candidates to be published on Aug. 30. Protests and appeals will be heard and treated between Sept. 4 and Sept. 6, after same must have been submitted between Aug. 31 and Sept. 3. Publication of final list of candidates will be released on Sept. 7 and elections into the NFF Executive Committee for 2018 to 2022 will hold on Sept.

Henry Onyekuru, Ikechukwu Ezenwa first Super Eagles stars to hit Seychelles Galatasaray forward Henry Onyekuru and Ikechukwu Ezenwa from Enyimba will be the first players to arrive at the Super Eagles Savoy Hotel Resort and Spa, Victoria, on Monday as the Super Eagles open camp for Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Seychelles. Everton loanee Onyekuru Galatasaray SK marksman is scheduled to land in Victoria on the island of Mahe at 11 am on Monday, to be followed two-andhalf hours later by goalkeeper Ezenwa, who will arrive with the Nigeria–based members of the technical crew and backroom staff. All the other players on coach Gernot Rohr’s 24–man roster will arrive at the team hotel on Tuesday, with one group to come in before breakfast and another group expected at lunchtime. Rohr has included three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and seven forwards in his list for the crucial match, with four other players on standby. The Super Eagles and the Pirates clash at the 10,000–capacity Stade Linite in a Group E, Matchday 2 encounter on Saturday, starting from 4.30pm Seychelles time (1.30pm Nigeria time),

with both teams in need of the three points after losing their respective openers to the campaign 15 months ago. Libya top Group E following a 5-1 trouncing of Seychelles, who have since installed a new coach in Gavin Jeanne, while South Africa are second after they beat the Eagles 2-0 in Uyo.

Ebonyi football fans urge Victor Moses to reconsider international retirement Football fans in Ebonyi have urged Chelsea FC of England’s Victor Moses, to reconsider his retirement from the national team. NAN reports that on Aug. 15, Moses announced his international retirement from the Nigeria national football team, much to the shock of anyone and everyone involved. The fans interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Sunday, were reacting to Moses’s snub by Coach Mauricio Sarri in the team’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, a streak witnessed since the start of the current season. Bright Igboatu, former Chairman of Chelsea Fan Club Abakaliki branch, noted that Moses was misguided by thinking that retiring from the Eagles would make Sarri look his way. “The problem is not due to Moses’s commitment with the national team but because Sarri is employing a system different from that of former Coach, Antonio Conte which made the player tick. “Conte employed a 3-5-2 formation which made Moses combine both defensive and offensive roles at the right wing but Sarri employs a 4-3-3 formation which features players on

both the right-full back and outside right positions. Jude Omagwe, defunct Jasper United of Onitsha player supported this assertion, arguing that featuring for the national team would even enhance Moses’s chances of breaking into Sarri’s main team. “Chelsea’s blistering start to the season would make it difficult for Sarri to drop any play from this group that have adapted to his new system. “Matches in the Europa league, Carabao and Federation Cups in which Moses and other fringe players can feature, are not played regularly as the focal attention is the premier league,” he said. Chika Nwangele, Ebonyi United of Abakaliki Captain advised Moses to realise the impact playing for the national team could make in his dire situation. “Luca Modric of Croatia has recently overthrown Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to emerge Europe’s best player and this was due to his scintillating performance at the world cup. “Moses should realise that established players such as Cesc Fabregas, Adreas Christensein

among others are facing similar situations as the national team affords him the opportunity of being match-fit,” he said. Samuel Chukwuemeka, a soccer historian, recalled that the national team afforded several Nigerian stars not playing regularly at their clubs, the avenues of being relevant. “The world acclaimed ‘USA 94’ team for instance, had several players that had no clubs or were not regulars at their clubs during the world cup qualifiers and competition proper.

NSDFI chief promises effective utilisation of athletes’ N900m grant Director-General, Nigeria Sports Development Fund Incorporated (NSDFI), Mr Olajide Fashikun, has promised effective use of the N900 million grant being planned for Nigerian athletes. Fashikun made the pledge on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, on the sidelines of the funds launch in Abuja. According to him, the Elite Athletes Development Grant is to ensure that athletes are highly prepared to represent the nation and increase it’s medal chances at Tokyo 2020 Olympics. “N10 million grant will be given to each athlete to ensure they are engaged with qualitative training programme, standard kits and equipment and also, their welfare will be taken care of during the

period. “Ninety athletes from five federations expected to benefit the grant from launching till November ending,” he said. The director-general gave reason for the emphasis on how the fund should be used. Fashikun said Taekwondo, Athletics, Wrestling, Para Sports, Shooting would be privileged to get 90 athletes prepared for next Olympics, adding that weightlifting was suspended. He said aggressive 90 days campaign would follow the formal launch to mobilise 4.5 million Nigerians to donate N200 each to support 90 of our athletes ahead of the Olympics. “Each nominated athlete will be presented a giant cheque, comprehensive life insurance cover and other appurtenances.

“They will be handed over to them to enable adequate team plan and preparation,” he said. Fashikun added that “no athlete will be given grant on the day of launching because an earlier nominated athlete’s parents wanted the cash not following preparation plans. “We cannot ensure adequate use of the money through such disbursement. “Also, part of the objective of the fund is to ensure adequate preparation of athletes for reasonable time and proper programmes ahead of global competitions,” he said. Beneficiaries will be announced by the Chairman of the Elite Athlete Development Grants committee headed by Mr Stanley Nkwazema.

U17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets skipper, defender fail age test in Niger Officials have said that Golden Eaglets skipper and a right fullback failed the MRI age test in Niger Republic, while Group B foes Benin have been disqualified from the zonal U17 AFCON championship after 10 of their players failed. It was further gathered that Burkina Faso had two of their players disqualified on age grounds, while hosts Niger had a player. “Benin are already on their way back home after they were disqualified from the competition as 10 of their players failed the age test,” an official said. “Nigeria’s captain and their right fullback failed the age test.”

Olivier Giroud: I’m not ruling out Chelsea stay

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has refused to rule out the possibility of extending his contract at Stamford Bridge. The World Cup winner was signed in January by Antonio Conte, yet since the manager was replaced by Maurizio Sarri in the summer, he has become more peripheral to things at Stamford Bridge. Indeed, he has played only 40 minutes of football so far this term and did not feature at all in Saturday’s 2-0

win at Bournemouth. “I still have one year of contract, plus possibly another year,” he told Canal+’s ‘Telefoot’ programme. “The board of the club have been positive in terms of giving me it. I do not know yet, we’ll see how things are in April or May, but I won’t exclude any possibility. We’ll see.” Meanwhile, he has dismissed the suggestion that Sarri and Conte’s styles differ greatly. “It’s similar to what we had with Conte,” he said. “We do a lot of tactical

work, he’s very rigorous and precise in his vision of football. “I came back late, and for sure it’ll take me a bit of time to be prepared. That’s just my case. I’ve got a little gas. I’ve tried to bring more to the team, and in the last couple of matches I’ve been decisive. “Last year, I won my place. There’s no reason that can’t be the case this year. The most important thing is to be decisive when I’m given my chance, and I hope to have more game time after the international break.” Giroud is revelling in his status as a World Cup winner has brought him on the training ground. “With N’Golo Kante, we’re called the ‘World Cup Winners’ at the club,” he said. “There were many great memories this summer, many great moments. We must continue, go forward and be ambitious for what is to follow.” Giroud has played 20 times for the Blues and has scored five times, setting up a further three goals.

They open their campaign tomorrow afternoon by 4pm against Burkina Faso. Cote d’Ivoire are the other team in Group B following the disqualification of Benin.
