Health commissioner decries increase in liver cancer cases in Gombe The Gombe State Commissioner of Health, Dr Kennedy Ishaya, has raised an alarm over the rising cases of cancer of the liver in the state, describing the development as worrisome. The commissioner told journalists in Gombe on Friday that based on the information gathered from public and private hospitals across the state, at least a death associated with cancer of the liver occurred every week. Ishaya said that the information also revealed that no age group was exempted from the affliction, as the disease incidence cut across all ages, sexes and social classes. He said that the Ministry of Health was now working assiduously to ascertain the causes of the illness, as well as its preventive

Land encroachment: Lugbe residents seek FG’s intervention Idu Jude, Abuja Worried over the incessant land grabbing in Abuja, residents of Lugbe, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory have sought the intervention of the Federal Government and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to tame the tide. The land dispute is between the Lugbe Community Residential Development (CRD) and the River Park Estate owners in the community. The CRD site situated along the Airport road which covers about 474 hectares of lands was acquired by members of the public since 1996 with its own layout separately. However, a developer of River Park Estate on October 9 allegedly moved in with armed men and police officers as well as bull dozers to unleash mayhem on the innocent residents of the community. Expressing their grievances through a peaceful protest, the residents appealed
President Muhammadu Buhari, the FCT Minister Muhammad Musa Bello and other appropriate authorities to come to their aid. Speaking on the development, one of the affected victim simply identified as Mr. Rufus Olatunji lamented that he bought land from the FCDA in 2010 without any premonition of crisis. He said, ’’ I went as far as Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS) to confirm the genuineness of the land paper. I am just surprise that a developer from nowhere will come and grab my lad. “My challenge is that a man whom we did not know before now encroached on our land with the effort to sell to the developers of the River Park Estate which has been a serious challenge because of the man’s influence in the society. ’’He brought his boys to unleashed mayhem on us during one of our landlords meetings. Even mobile policemen accosted those armed men to the extent that I escaped by the whisker because I was attacked’’ Olatunji added. Also, Mr. Stanley Nwaokike who spoke
on behalf of the protesters said that he has been living in the estate for the past 10 years after he legally acquired the land from Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). ’’Early in 2014, we discovered that River Park started encroaching into our area, bulldozing and falling trees and what actually got our attention was one of us who was building then got his building demolished, so because of that outrage we all rushed there and we were able to meet the tractor man, policemen and officials accosting them to demolish houses and we told them that this place was not River Park area. “We brought our own layout and asked them to bring their layout but they came with layout which we don’t know where it came from and we were able to tell them that their own layout was not registered with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). They (Police) started beating few of us who were there and started trying to cow us back to our various homes so that they could continue. We have suffered serious from this man since we started.

In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, he reveals working on set of Unsane movie, life as an actor & recording artiste, how he manages the ladies, fatherhood, and being raised by a single mother amongst others. Enjoy… What role are you playing in the coming movie ‘Unsane?’ I am playing the character John Okafor, a very bad guy, rich, arrogant and involved in so many things illegal and ended up doing something’s that are really bad but ended up with some repercussions. You given the role of a bad guy to play; what came to mind when you got the script? Sincerely, nothing serious came to mind because as an actor when a script is given to you; you own up the character and interpret it the way it deem fit. Today am playing the bad guy role, tomorrow it could be a pastor or lover boy role. As an actor your ability to fit into different role gives you an edge; I want to be a round actor who can play any given character. Is this your first major movie appearance? Not at all, this is my fourth movie appearance since the conclusion of Big Brother Africa What is experience like been a recording artiste and an actor? It is not easy but off course you all know am into fashion, music, acting; for me all form of creative art is an venue of showcasing oneself because presently the only thing I cannot do is to draw but trust me if I have the drawing ability too; I will also be drawing. Every stages of creative art that I am involved in has its own experiencing which I am currently enjoying to the fullest. In all which do you find more fulfilling? Music of course is what I find more fulfilling because that has always been first love but of course acting on the other hand is what I also want to be involved in but I wanted the right time to do it, I did not want to come out as an actor and will storming different auditions location trying to get roles and been paid peanuts. So I decided
to wait for that moment when bigger opportunities will come and filmmakers will want me to be a part of their project. After Big Brother a lot of people would have thought you will have put out several materials musically? Well what a lot of our fans/listeners don’t know is that producing a song takes a lot of creative process that’s why since the end of Big Brother I put a song titled ‘Down’ and now am working on releasing another song ‘Balance’ featuring Bisola Aiyeola and Iyanya. One song since leaving the Big Brother house, don’t you think you are hindering yourself? You think it’s easy to putting out materials; first you have think of putting out the right material that people like with a message in it. I don’t want to be your regular kind of artiste. Truth be told, I have songs but then again the last song I dropped was about a month ago, so that’s a enough time before Big Brother ended, I took my time so that the whole BBN happening was over and people are ready to meet with the brand Teddy A. Why the choice of Bisola and Iyanya on the new song? I felt they are the ones who would do justice to the material, Bisola is a talented artist who can sing and has an amazing voice and Iyanya of course is a great musician. Trust me the song is a jam and people are going to like it. You floated your personally owned record label ‘Alpha Records’, how is the label doing at the moment? It’s going well and presently I am the only recording artiste on the label; we putting out music and setting up the label for me was not just about showing off having in mind that involving in such requires certain structure and standard. I have a done a few of my own personal shows and listening parties under the supervision of Alpha records; however I do not have any artiste signed up for
Teddy A
now but as we expand and grow, we might be considering that too. You and fellow BBN housemate BamBam seems to be the only couple relevant since the end of Big Brother as others have been involved in one controversies or the other; how have you been able to manage yours? First of all, I do not like to talk about my personal life but then as far as drama; I am not the dramatic type who likes controversies because I am all about work, making money, taking care of family because those are all
that matters at the end of the day and am sure BamBam sees life this way too and that was why it was easy for us to connect in Big Brother. I don’t know what is going on as far as other housemates is in terms of relationship like you say but then everyone needs to be focus on why they went into the house in the first place which is to be bigger and better and your pocket are happier. If you want to go ahead and have relationships that’s fine, if you have issues with one another; settle it; just handle your home well. With several controversies, fights

Remember in the house I did lot of advisory role with some of the housemates and that was because we were all in the house together but presently everyone is in pursuit of his/her goal; I am not in their lives, everyone is busy. We connect with one another at our leisure time but at the moment am not in the position to advice anyone unless if am been reached out to and I will render my own advice; they are all grown up men and women. How have you been managing the ladies knowing that you are a public figure now? For me, I like to make them know they are fans because you really don’t let that get into your head because the same people that are talking now; don’t even know you like four years ago, so I don’t see their comments as anything, I see it as grace because you can be the finest guy and you won’t have any comment on your social media pages but the fact that I receive their comments alone gives me joy and further shows that you are been appreciated. How do you feel when you read negative stories about your brand; For instance, a lady once accused of sex on the plane? You will recall that when the said lady accused me having sex with her on the plane, I never reacted to it because I know there was no iota of truth in it and few days after the news went viral, the same lady came out to say her social media page was hacked. You see if the story was true then and had reacted; it will soon be trending till now but the fact is since BBN, I have prepared myself for any eventuality so most time when I see these stories; I laugh about it. You an Alpha male factor and ladies love that; what is your social media DM like? My DM is active What kind of pictures you do get on a regular basis? Laugh!! Am I supposed to reveal that to you, well I get pictures of Jesus Christ most of time. But seriously you don’t want imagine what my direct messages look like. 2018 is almost ending, what other expectations in terms of work should we anticipate for? As you can see am currently rounding up on the set of Unsane movie, I have several movies featuring this year and to top it all I have got many approaches from directors who want to work with me, I have a new song coming out, couple of shows, my clothing line will releasing beautiful collections amongst others. Don’t you think your involvement in movies will affect your music career? Like I said earlier music is my first love and nothing changes that but the truth is as man I feel you should be able to multitask and be able to joggle and balance this things well. It’s all about scheduling; for instance, I may decide that for a whole week I want to be in the studio to knock out every song I am working on, collaborations and when I have movie project to work on, I schedule my timing too. At the end it’s all about prioritizing your time. Aside the regular roles you have played; what other dream roles do you look forward to act? Any other role will suit me well, I
e n i g a m i o t t n a You don’t w s M D a i d e m l a i c what my so A y d d e T e k i l k o lo look forward to a fulfilling and challenging role to play; something that will task me as a person, Will you act nude? How much are they paying me? Is that supposed to be criteria? There has be criteria on ground and more importantly, they have to be money involved Like how much are you looking at? Let’s wait till then, bring the script and we take it from there. How is fatherhood treating you? Fatherhood is great, I am enjoying every bit of it and I currently miss my son because I have not seen him in a while because I am here in Nigeria. How many tattoos do you have? Currently I have about fifteen tattoos
Are they symbolic? Definitely they are all symbolic and one of the symbolic one is the baby in the cloud tattoo because I had it when my baby was on the way. With the numerous tattoos you have, ear piercings; have you ever been harassed by SARS? Not at all
because before now I was reckless with women and as time went I realized that it was not the actual thing I want for myself because it does not really work for me. People have seen me how I treat a woman and that was since more while in the house because I had an interest.
Would it be right to say you are mummy’s boy? Every man is mummy’s boy; I was raised by a single mum and I feel like any man who is close his mother eventually knows how to treat women right.
Don’t you feel sentimental towards your dad at the moment? Not at all because whatever issues you have with your dad should not be because of your mother and if any issue arises; you should sort it out. Everyman, every parent has a story, so I think you need to take time out to find out what exactly happen because you need to make findings from both parties.
You been raised by a single mother, what are those things you learnt about the strength of a woman? Been raised by single mother made me appreciate woman better
As a man, what do you think is your selling point? I don’t know, I guess my whole being is what they appreciate and they pretty much compliment everything.

Ex-beauty queen, Ibidunni Ighodalo, in joyous mood Stories by Isaac Oguntoye Just like the popular saying that love conquers everything. This assertion is what best describe what the former beauty queen, Ibidunni Ighodalo is presently enjoying in her marriage. While most other childless women are despised like the dehydrated sea of infertility and scorned like the postmenopausal part of the earth, Ibidun’s husband and her in-laws accord her utmost loyalty and love. Even when the decision to go for IVF, she was not only encouraged but supported all through. It is for this reason that Ibidun celebrates her in-laws. She appreciates their support and love towards her knowing that several other women in her shoes are going through hell in the hands of their husbands and in-laws. They make life unbearable for the woman, not putting into consideration her personal struggle and suffering. Ibidunni who runs Elizabeth R, an upscale events planning company, has revealed how she and her husband, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House Church, Lagos, adopted two kids, a girl and a boy. Her social media handle, she reiterate on her journey and how God has been so kind to her saying “Where do I start? You are such a loving and kind Father it’s incomparable. Your wisdom and might is unrivaled as is your knowledge. You know the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end because time truly exists in you. You knew me before you formed me and you knew my life’s journey and you prepared for me every step of the way…. My choice of a life partner though questioned by many was a divine masterpiece by you… You already saw the struggles and you knew the perfect fit for me… you knew who could handle the storms of life with me and you blessed me with a wonderful husband, friend and lover. Ever so supportive and loving. Supportive through almost a dozen episodes of IVF, never wavering, there for every test and doctors appointment. With all the societal pressures and shaming you held me and comforted me in my low times. Even when that did not work out you
were already planning something mind blowing. How else could I explain the burden you laid on my husband heart to establish an orphanage even before our marriage? This same orphanage gave me my beautiful daughter who again has your hand in her life. Born on the same day as myself and named by her dad after me (such prophecy) and brought to the orphanage. Even when I did not recognize your hand it was there till our eyes saw that which was always in front of us. Again ever supportive, my husband was in support of our choice to go in that direction. The way you piece our lives jigsaw puzzles astounds me continually papa. Out of the blue a call comes to my phone and my darling aunt says I’ve seen your son. Come and pick him…. Not a clue to the process I started in faith and you made a way and Zenan became ours…. Even when I’m not thinking about myself you are thinking about me and putting my thoughts in the hearts of people. Seeing my son is a moment I would never forget. The bond was instant, and love was in full flow. How could I ever have orchestrated my life as perfectly as you have done. I’m so glad I have you papa because your ways are not my ways and your hand is evident in my life….” A good move for a couple who has not produced their biological kids, Ibidun seems to have taken a step most African family fear to tread. In an interview i n
Thisday of September 4, 2016, she opened up on her search for a child. According to the former beauty queen, having prayed and sought different avenues for a medical solution and with the problem not willing to be wished away, Ibidun decided to be happy. Then, she posted the second part of her revelation: “Thank you Father for making a way, for guiding me, for holding me, for giving me joy, for sending me peace and for completely showing my family Favour. Papa my prayer would not be complete if I don’t ask you to open the eyes of my other women trusting you for the fruit of the womb to have an open mind to different ways of becoming a ‘MOTHER’. So many children are out there looking for love and a home to call their own. I pray they experience the joy of motherhood as I do now and open their hearts to you to listen to as many options as you have provided….. Adoption does not mean you have failed them but is a way of showing what blessings you have in store for them if only they will yield to You…. a blessing which is priceless… I thank you for my two adorable kids, I could never trade them for anything in the world…. looking forward to your instruction on looking after more children”

Aare Adams’ position on restructuring Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has reaffirmed his belief in restructuring, saying it is time for the Yoruba nation to adopt a new paradigm shift, taking into consideration all the issues that affect Nigeria as a nation. Speaking recently at a two-day Summit and interactive session of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) in Hamburg Germany, Adams said: “As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, there is need for the Yorubas to adopt a new paradigm shift. He, however, frowned at the desecration of the sanctity of the traditional institution by some people who, he said, arrogate to themselves the position of a Yoruba Oba in the Diaspora. ‘Our traditional institution is sacred and we won’t allow anybody to tarnish the image, even as we urge all the Yoruba Obas in their respective states to condemn the abominable act”. Aare Adams, who had earlier met with the Nigeria Ambassador in Berlin, Mrs. Mobolaji Sakirat Ogundero, said part of the contending issues discussed at the summit include restructuring of Nigeria, as well as decentralization of both security, monetary, education and infrastructure, which allows the federating unit to develop at their own pace. ‘’The word restructuring simply means re organization, not disintegration, our position on this is clear and that is Nigeria cannot afford to isolate itself from the rest of the world. For years, patriotic Nigerians have been agitating for restructuring, but a few elements in the country are against it. As far as I am concerned, those calling for restructuring should not be seen as enemies of state but partners in progress.’’, he said.
Aare Gani Adams All members of the group from across the 84 countries in the world, as well as other prominent Yoruba groups were present at the Summit. President of Isokan Omo Yoruba in Germany, Chief Adewole Albert, was also in attendance.
Bolanle Ambode
We are committed to zero infant mortality in Lagos – Bolanle Ambode Wife of the governor of Lagos State, Bolanle Ambode, has said that no effort would be spared to achieve zero infant mortality in the state. She made the commitment during the donation of two transport incubator ambulance to Gbagada General Hospital and Lagos Island Maternity, by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), as part of their health intervention project for this year. A transport incubator ambulance is specially designed to transport premature babies to standard medical facilities, equipped with Intensive Care Unit, ICU. Bolanle noted that members of the committee were touched by the high mortality rate of pre-term babies, occurring before they could access intensive care. The transport incubators according to her, would provide a womb-like environment for the baby, with the right temperature and life-saving gadgets, to help the newborn hang unto life till it gets to the ICU. She said, The special ambulance can also be used to convey infants with severe post birth complications and others in serious emergency situations. The women of COWLSO reckon that with this intervention, many more newborns, infants and children in Lagos State, will be saved from avoidable deaths with attendant happiness to their parents. The Committee also donated two hearing defect management equipment, Portable Otoread OAEs, to Alimosho and Shomolu General Hospitals, also as part of their intervention effort. Speaking further, she observed that COWLSO was constrained to continue its previous intervention in early detection and management of hearing defects, because of the serious consequences of hearing loss in children. She recalled that the committee two years ago had upgraded the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan, subsequently followed with
the donation of Portable Otoread OAEs equipment to Badagry, IfakoIjaiye, Ikorodu and Gbagada General Hospital. The objective according to her, was to enable early screening of newborns for possible hearing defects, to eradicate the worrisome menace, which comes with a network of consequences like delayed language development, academic under performance, social isolation and higher risk injuries among others. The governor’s wife stressed that the incubator ambulance must be made available for use by other government hospitals. In his address, the commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, noted that the Ambode Administration had always promoted the use of appropriate modern technology for delivery of qualitative and affordable healthcare to the people. According to him, the donation of Transport Incubator Ambulance to two state general hospitals will help to reduce the neo-natal morbidity and mortality indices of the state significantly. He commended the committee for their continual intervention in the healthcare sector, stressing that it had impacted lives, given hope to the downtrodden, empowered women and protected the environment in the state. The commissioner urged the lucky beneficiary hospitals, to make good and optimal use of the modern equipment, towards achieving the health objectives of the state government. The chairman of Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr. Bayo Aderiye, represented by Dr. Oluwole Tokunbo, copiously commended COWLSO for the series of health interventions over the years. The medical directors of Gbagada General Hospital and Lagos Island Maternity, Dr. Tayo Lawal and Dr. Muyiwa Eniayewun, unanimously thanked COWLSO for the kind humanitarian gesture, noting that it had closed the gap of challenges in the health sector, as it affects children

Felabration 2018: No sacrifice is too big for Fela – Rex Suru US-based Nigerian reggae artiste, Rex Suru, born Rex Olisuru Ogunniyi, has arrived the country to be part of this year’s Felabration, a music festival in honour of late Afrobeat founder, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Rex Suru, who spoke with our reporter has expressed why he came all the way from the United States of America to be part of the annual musical fiesta, which begins on Monday, October 15, 2018 to October 21, 2018.“No sacrifice is too big for the late founder of Afrobeats. I was part of it last year and thank God here I am again. Fela is a huge influence on many artistes. He had influenced my own music in many ways even though he did Afrobeats and I do Afro-roots reggae. The similarity is in the rhythm and the message. There are connections, a little connection, though it is different but it is similar especially in the onsession. I love Fela’s music because it is mostly on-sessions, the rhythm is percussion rhythms and it is the same with mine but his is Afrobeat while mine is Afro roots reggae. We have dynamic rhythm sessions and our sessions seem to go with the highlife style of presentation and also stage presentation. Fela influenced me a lot on how to talk, he called his yabis. I don’t yab but I try to speak like him in
Rex someSuru ways. He is part of an influence in my life and so is Bob Marley. So, we are just going to combine these two great vibrations into what we are doing including what I have as an original of mine then we will see how it goes .I intend to bring a little Fela into Felabration in some styles which I admire of him,” he said. He also pointed out that he’s not doing for the money as whatever he is being paid cannot take care of expenses he has incurred in flying from the US to Nigeria, as well as paying his band. “I got paid last year and I expect
to get paid this year as well. Even if they don’t pay I’m still happy to give Nigeria what I have. Everything in life is not about the money but about the joy of presenting what you have to the people and if they enjoy you then you have accomplished the main goal but it is also good to be paid because there are a lot of people involved in this performance and not just me. But Fela is too huge to be expecting monetary gratification,” he pointed out. Rex Suru, who has been doing music close to 30 years prides himself on being the creator of his genre of music known as ‘Afro-roots reggae’ and has four studio albums to his name The name of my band is the Cherubim Vibes, but I go simply by the name ‘Rex Suru and the Vibes’. ‘Vibes’ as in vibration, while ‘Cherubim’ means angels. I’ve been doing this music for over 25 years. I have a very deep passion for what I’m doing. Music has been the essence of my adult life and I sincerely believe, without any shadow of doubt, that the heavenly realm is trying to use me as a medium to deliver positive messages. I’m not saying I’m a messenger, but that’s the vibration that comes through me. Doing music of joy, praise and unity among the human race,” he said.

I will marry Genevieve Nnaji if - Ruth Eze Few months ago, top Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji made history with her latest movie, Lion Heart, first African movie bought over by Netflix. Since this new feat, Genny as she is fondly called by Nollywood lovers, has been getting lots of commendations and well wishes from her friends and colleagues. One them is Ruth Eze, a budding actress who confessed that her love for Ms Nnaji could make her go extra miles. Hear her: “Genevieve inspires and motivates me. She makes me believe tomorrow will be better and greater than my today. She’s hardworking, and she does not believe in noisemaking but action. That is also the kind of person I am. I love her so so much. In fact, if I were to be a man, I will marry Genevieve. I don’t know what we’ve done to deserve somebody like her in Nollywood. She has made us proud, even Nkem Owoh calls her Manwoman, she’s just everything, I am so happy for her, and I pray God to continue to give her the strength to do more great things,” she gushed.
Continuing, Ruth listed the good lessons she has learned from the lifestyle of the Nollywood Queen. “Have learned to be a strong woman, to believe in myself and to keep few friends. To be focused, dependent, strong and always staying true to myself; never follow the crowd. Also never ever wanting to be like anyone else”

It is, however, worthy of note that the total sum recovered was in N4 billion and $7 million in cash and physical assets in the special panel various operations. SPIP Chairman, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla, disclosed this in a statement made available in Abuja on Friday.
Obono-Obla said the 7 million dollars was recovered from the previous management of the Nigeria Export and Import (NEXIM) Bank who had “illegally placed” it in Heritage Bank. Lagos to partner FBRA to rid environment of PET waste Ladesope Ladelokun The Lagos State government has indicated interest in partnering with the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) on the eradication of used Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles that have been blocking drainages and canals. The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde DurosinmiEtti, disclosed this through the Assistant Director of Environmental Services, Mrs. Tolulope Adeyo in an interview in Lagos recently. Adeyo said the issue of waste has been of great concern and that any initiative to eradicate it, like FBRA’s waste collection and recycling scheme, is quite appreciated. Adeyo said the government has created an enabling system for organisations working through a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) like FBRA, to thrive to attain a common goal
of keeping the environment clean. She stated that the Ministry is very much concerned about the sustainability of the environment and has therefore urged citizens in the state to join hands in the cleaning and proper disposal of waste, especially PET bottles to avoid environmental and health hazards associated with it. “We have lots of materials that we use daily that get into our waste stream due to industrialisation and commercialisation. And because of the poor attitude of companies, wastes are being disposed indiscriminately, particularly plastics and PET bottles. Considering the havoc this cause during the rainy season in several parts of the state, the government has made giant strides in combating waste and is very much eager to collaborate with the private sector in ensuring a cleaner and healthy environment,” she affirmed. Adeyo commended FBRA, which is the PRO of companies in the food and beverage sector, for its laudable role in ensuring that used PET bottles are
mopped up through its partner, Recycle Points. With Recycle Points as collection partner, FBRA has made preparations towards cleaning of 500 tonnes of PET bottles monthly for one year for recycling. This figure, which will further increase to 3,000 tonnes monthly after the first phase in 2019, will see Recycle Points using its numerous collection points as hubs for agents within the value chain to deposit PET bottles to be recycled at Lafarge plants shredding facilities across the country based on FBRA’s agreement. On the eve of the World Cleanup Day on September 15, a volunteer staff of FBRA member-firms led traders and other users of Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos in collecting waste from used PET bottles towards a cleaner and healthier trading environment. The initiative, which received the collaboration of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, was organised in collaboration with Recycle Points. The chairman of FBRA, Mrs. Folasade
Morgan, said the campaign was used to enlighten traders, shoppers, as well as members of Nurses of-air Foundation on crucial issues relating to proper disposal and separation of waste, recycling, healthy lifestyle and other measures aimed at curbing environmental pollution. The Alliance has been adhering to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy of the government, which transfers significant responsibility to producers for the entire life-cycle of their products, especially at the post-consumer stages. It has a membership drawn from responsible and forward-thinking companies. These are Nigerian Bottling Company Limited, The Coca-Cola Company Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Seven-Up Bottling Company Limited, and Nestle Nigeria Plc. Given its advocacy, it has received commendation from NESREA, the regulator of the environment, for its significant progress towards EPR compliance.
On the other hand, Nestle topped the losers’ chart, dropping N30 to close at N1,400 per share. Flour Mills trailed with a loss of N1.15 to close at N20.80, while Cadbury declined by 80k to close at N9.50 per share. Facilitate market for locally made moringa products, farmers urge government Ladesope Ladelokun The Moringa Farmers’ Cooperative Society has called on governments to facilitate a market for locally made moringa products. The Chairman of the society, Mr. Adebipe Ojediran, made the call on Friday when the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Inspection Team paid an inspection and evaluation visit to Life Builder Centre at Ijaye Community in Oyo State. The GEF supports the centre, an NGO, with a grant of 100, 000 dollars to implement environmental related-project. The project, which started in 2014 was tagged: “Adaptation to Climate Change Through Biogel Production from Moringa Oleifera in Oyo State.” Ojediran, who described Nigerian made Moringa as an organic product, called on governments to ensure increased demand for local production to sustain the livelihood of rural communities. “But what I see is that selling of the product is low, which hinders demands and sustainability. “If the farmers get Moringa leaves and seeds, nobody to buy on a regular basis, they will be discouraged to continue planting Moringa. “Presently, we have only a company called Vidsa Multiventures Ltd. and it is demanding for Moringa leaves. “If the company is not making money out of it, it will be reluctant to take more leaves,’’ Ojediran said. The chairman also urged the Federal Government to ban the importation of sub-standard Moringa products. “In the market, we have so many imported Moringa products, although they are not as good as our product, you know that Nigerians prefer to have something from outside. “I will like to suggest that the Federal Government should protect locally made Moringa product. “If the manufacturers in the country are protected by banning Moringa product entering the country, then the farmers will benefit because the home manufacturers will demand more leaves and stems. “But for now, the demand is not sustaining the farmers’’, he said. Mr. Daniel Maliq, a Moringa farmer, underscored the need for industries and other relevant companies to buy Moringa product. “We need industries that will be taking Moringa leaves from us. If they can take the leave every seven weeks, it will be better and we, as farmers will be happy because it will sustain our livelihood,” he said.

Damaged Overland Airways aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos... on Friday
Fire guts Overland Airways aircraft inside hanger in Lagos A turboprop aircraft belonging to Overland Airways was on Friday severely damaged by fire while parked at the airline’s hanger at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. The ATR aircraft, with registration number: 5N-BPE, was being powered by the Ground Power Unit (GPU) when the incident occurred.
However, there were no casualties due to the swift response by the firefighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Mr Sam Adurogboye, the General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said that the regulatory authority had been notified of the incident and was awaiting the airline’s report.
He, however, added that “it was a minor incident and there were no casualties. We are still waiting for more details from the airline.” Also, the Spokesperson for the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, said the bureau’s investigators have been deployed to the scene to ascertain what led to the incident.
Unions end siege as Bi- Courtney recalls 27 sacked workers As airlines, other businesses lose over N300m
Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo Management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL) operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2) and agitating unions have reached an agreement ending the two-day siege that has cost airlines and other businesses lose a minimum of N300 million. BASL acceded to the demands of the three unions that shut down their operations as both parties signed the agreement that snowballed into the current picketing. In a letter signed by the Group Executive Director, Roger a whittle and Group Head a Human Resources, Ola Azeez, addressed to the unions titled: Re:15-Day Ultimatum to Recall and Reinstate Workers the management of BiCourtney agreed to the unions’ demands as follows: “Staff of BASL are free (as they have always been) to exercise their right of association by indicating their willingness to join any of the aviation unions. The management shall deduct and remit check off dues as required below.” “The 27 members of the union who were laid off shall be recalled without loss of pay or service and deployed to where their services are required within the Resort Group. After that, the company intends to declare them redundant and is willing to discuss their redundancy benefits with the unions in accordance with Section 20 of the Labour Act” The Air Transport Services Senior Staff
Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) shut down the operations of the terminal. According to the unions, until the 20 sacked workers of BASL were reinstated the industrial action will continue indefinitely. The workers were sacked in February for indicating interest to be part of one Union or another and this did not go down well with labour as they took the matter up negotiating to get them recalled. Before the agreement was reached it was learned that airlines operating from MMA2 to various destinations in the country include Dana, Aero, Arik, Med-View, Azman, Max Air had lost over N300million in revenue. One of the airlines’ officials, who craved for anonymity, said: “For now, we have lost over N63million to the ongoing industrial action and losing much money in an industry where airlines are still grappling with a myriad of challenges is unacceptable and disappointing, to say the least. We do not know how the situation will be in the coming days and we might have no other option than to downsize if the action stretches for too long.” However, with the agreement reached, the airlines that relocated would move back to their base and recommence services from there. At the negotiating table were the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigeria Drug a Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the warring parties. Meanwhile, Dana Air has resumed flights at MMA2, with the introduction of cash top-up for Guests. The airline in a statement signed by its Media and Communications Manager, Kingsley Ezenwa said, “we have resumed flights from MMA2 following the agreement reached by MMA2 and the Aviation Unions today.” ‘We thank the Management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited BASL, operators of MMA2 for considering the economic implications and for putting the national interest first in resolving the industrial action. ‘We also wish to thank our teeming guests for their total understanding and cooperation in the course of our temporary relocation to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and we hope to continue offering the best of our services which we have come to be known for.” Kingsley noted that as a result of Dana Air’s core values of improving customer experience, and knack for customer-centric innovations, the airline has also introduced a ‘Cash Top-Up’ concept for members of its loyalty and reward program Dana Miles. According to him, ‘the Cash Top-up allows our Dana Miles members to top-up their miles with little cash to enjoy the hospitality of our economy or Business Class cabin. Our interested Dana Miles members are advised to visit our website: www.flydanaair.com or do an email toDanamiles@flydanaair.com, 72 hours before their preferred flight.’’

Our mission at Legacy is to enthrone godly leadership in Nigeria – Martins Chief Kenny Martins is a politician and an activist. He is also the Grand Patron of Legacy Initiative International, otherwise simply known as Legacy, a group that has saddled itself with the responsibility of returning Nigeria to a path of godliness in leadership. The group is working with religious leaders across board to enthrone a set of political leadership in the country that will emerge with the fear of God in mind. In this interview with PATRICK OKOHUE, Martins speaks on how his group is working round the clock across the country to achieve its goal. There is so much uncertainty in the politics of the country and you recently launched a new group, Legacy Initiative International, aimed at redirecting the peoples’ outlook on politics, approaching politics with the God factor in view, what do you aim to achieve with this? Well, in your introductory statement you said that nobody knows the direction that the politics is going, well I will say that the politics is going towards 2019 election and there is a lot of clamour, we got here because of the clamour for change, but as we speak there is still further clamour for change, but change in which context? Because if it is just change in the context of political parties you will see that won’t take us far, because we have had almost 20 years of democracy now and we have had two major parties that have come into contention and taken power, yet our clamour for change has not abated, which means something is just not right, so we believe that this evasive solution since independence will not be solved by further political party change, but it can only be changed by a comprehensive national re-orientation, redefinition of leadership qualities and those who will be entrusted with power. Until this is done we can’t get it right. Fortunately or otherwise, you cannot manufacture new Nigerians, that means the actors cannot change, so we believe that the only thing that we can bring that can change the situation is for Nigerians to finally turn to God and find God fearing leaders, those who will think of God first, the nation and the people next and then think of themselves in the context of rendering service and delivering the dividends of democracy. There is no doubt that democracy is the panacea, that is what we know. Since independence we have tried regional governance, having regional leaders, we have tried military government who rule by decrees and in the last 20 years we have tried democracy, full blown democracy, but nothing has changed, instead we are worse off in 2018 than we were in 1960. That is why we have gone round the country and talked to those we consider the custodians of the

people’s conscience and belief, that is the religious leaders, both Christians and Muslims and told them that we all know what is wrong with this country, we don’t need to start doing catalogues or start writing thesis over the problems of Nigeria, we all know them, we live them, we dream them, those problems, but can we proffer enduring solutions, can we work out a template whereby if our leaders get to power they will
learn to deliver. What separate Nigeria from the United Arab Emirate for example, when Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo and Gen. Murtala Mohammed dreamt of the relocation of the national capital to Abuja, the same time, the leaders of those emirates got together, Dubai, UAE and the rest of them and they also dreamt of a nation where everything works. Today for instance Nigeria is closer to Abuja that works in
terms of infrastructure, security and other things, but have we been able to create a country that works? No. We can also see the standard of roads built in Abuja today. There was a little time towards the end of Abacha’s government when there was effluence, which was waste on the street, it was quickly corrected and by the time Abdulsalam came in and Obasanjo came in that was totally eliminated, all the waste in Abuja flows down
When you look at all these countries that are working and that have worked, you can cite UAE, you can cite Saudi, they run based on the fear of God. Even America, the constitution says a nation under God, you hear a million times in their constitution and their national dynamics they don’t hide the fact that it is a godly nation. Go to the UK, you cannot separate the state from the church, from the royal house you cannot, in our own case we have pretended and tried as if God does not matter and that is a mistake.
to one central place, kilometers away where it is processed. I don’t know about Abuja now and boreholes, as for power that is a national problem. In essence if Dubai can work from scratch, UAE can work from scratch where they now have Qatar Airline, Emirate Airline, Ethiad Airline, all of them coming out of that same decision, that time that those two leaders took that decision, while we took a decision for just Abuja, now our national airline is gone, our security is gone, our infrastructure is gone today, what is wrong? It is simple, it is the quality of leadership, we have resources as they have, we have the manpower like they have, we as a people have the dreams, the yearnings and aspiration like the rest of the league of nations globally, but how come we cannot realise our own dreams? That is why we are challenging these crops of leaders, the Christians and the Muslims to look at power and good governance, not about partisan politics, no they will not be part of PDP, APC or whatever, but let them join in choosing the right leaders when these parties have come up with their candidates. You can see the problem of choosing leaders in this country, you do not have to be a President until you have a billion dollars, that cannot work, you cannot think of being a governor until you have at least N100billion, that cannot work, you cannot think of being a senator until you have at least N10billion, that cannot work, ditto for councilors and local government chairman. When those people get to power the first thing they want to do is to recoup their money, so we believe that with these kinds of leaders, the Christian and Muslim leaders looking into all these parties and interrogating the candidates chosen, who can be pointed at the grassroots, those the people believe in and they can assist in the emergence of these ones into position of leadership. But, when it gets to a point that people raise their hands in surrender and say God help us, it seem defeatist, have we gotten to that point? Secondly, when you talk of turning to religious leaders, it is generally believed that Nigerians are very religious

‘Our mission at Legacy is to enthrone godly leadership’ Continued from 17 people, but not necessarily godly, how do we reconcile this? When you look at all these countries that are working and that have worked, you can cite UAE, you can cite Saudi, they run based on the fear of God. Even America, the constitution says a nation under God, you hear a million times in their constitution and their national dynamics they don’t hide the fact that it is a godly nation. Go to the UK, you cannot separate the state from the church, from the royal house you cannot, in our own case we have pretended and tried as if God does not matter and that is a mistake. We are a very highly religious country, from the mosques, the churches and its various denominations, very religious, but it also says in the Bible and also in the Quran, faith without action is zero, so it is time we bring the practicality of those things we preach in the pulpit into governance, let us create a template through these men of God of what it takes to run this country and what we expect of our politicians, let them be governed, let be interrogated, let them be measured, let them be scored and marked by those templates against their performance. As neutral arbiters, as conscience of the nation, let those leaders score those people and where they have done well allow them to go on and show them red card when they are not performing, let us have for ones the dynamics of this country, let us have consequences in politics, for now there is no consequences in politics. If you become a governor and you rob your people, the worse that can happen is you lose election, you will not even lose your election, you won’t lose that second term, you will just pack your bags and baggage and defect to another party and take the things you have taken to offer the people peanuts and because they don’t have guidance, nobody is chaperoning their choices and motives and they are hungry they take your N10,000, N5,000 to N2,500, like some people paid so much money in recent elections up to N500,000 to voters and delegates and they vote and sell you their conscience for the next four years and you rob them for another four years under another party platform or same party and nothing happens. So, let us start questioning and querying our leaders, not necessarily the ICPC, EFCC, Police, SSS, no, let’s leave all those ones, let them face the more challenging issues of security, let us become the conscience of the nation, which is what Legacy is saying, let us by ourselves query these people and we can only do that by putting the right people in power abinitio, those you have tried and trusted. But when
you have people, charlatans, not charlatans because they are poor, not charlatans because they lack quality upbringing, not charlatans because they are not educated, no, but those who have predetermined before coming to power and offer billions to win the election, because they are determined to recoup it billions of times over, we need to put a stop to that and there is a way we can do it. There is a concern because in recent times, perhaps some of the political leaders pre-empted this kind of idea, because you see them going to some of the popular religious leaders, going to camps and all that to kneel before those ones for prayers and when that happens there members seem to see it as endorsement, so how do we ensure that with what you are spearheading, that politicians don’t take advantage of the people because of their religious beliefs? We will even encourage those politicians to come to all those camps and get the religious leaders to endorse them, but when you come you are presented with a template, with a charter of the people. You have come now for endorsement, we are praying for you, but as we are praying for you, this is what it takes and when you get there and you fail we will be watching you from this church as your constituency, you will never get our votes again if you fail us. Before now they just pray for them and they go and you don’t even have a way of talking to our people to vote for them, but now those religious leaders are saying we cannot be giving you our blessing without some conditions, even in the Bible there are condition, when God said you shall be my people, it said provided you shall do this and do that, so it is now we input those proviso, but these religious leaders are now saying, we shall bless them, we shall anoint them, but we shall also put a caveat, that you are going but these are what we expect of you and if you fail you should not expect our blessing next time. Because you can’t change
two religious bodies will happen, because in the Christian world we have talked with people like Bishop Oyedepo, Baba Aladura of C and S, Prelate of Methodist, Primate of Anglican, the Cardinal of the Catholic church, Arch Bishop Onayekan and so many others, the CAN president, the PFN president, a lot of all these people, we have been in Ibadan, in Abuja, we have gone round the country and incidentally we even have very vibrant and viable diaspora arm, because those externally are enamored by what is going on and they believe there is a possibility of is a critical change and we are building that critical mass that will finally deliver the true change in this country in terms of selection of true and effective leadership, so we are working on that.
the actors, you can’t manufacture new people and the churches cannot become political parties, no. Four of you can come and the church can now decide that based on this and this we pray for all of them and they will say it openly, that based on ABC, X is the best as God is leading us and as we have seen, so our people, we blessed all of them but X is the factor. So, it is time the church, the Mosque takes decision and even traditional religion people are saying they should not be left behind, as they believe their own get results faster, so it is getting interesting. So, the leaders of faith, those leaders who are godly are now getting together to say we will not stay aloof, stand back and look from a distance, we shall monitor what is going on, because ultimately we are responsible to God and to the people, just as the leaders are responsible to God, this time it is even higher, because
they are responsible to God and to their own conscience, so they can’t stand it anymore because the cry of 200million people is getting to them, things are not working, Nigeria of 2018 is worse than Nigeria of 1960, its worse than Nigeria of 2000, its worse than Nigeria of 2012, why? You talk about a template, how well are you mobilising with the religious leaders across the divide to put together this template, because there is need for a unified template or isn’t that right? Yes, we have gone very far, we have had rubbing of minds with most of the critical leaders of the church and also among the Muslim world, the likes of the Sultan of Sokoto, the Etsu Nupe, the Emir of Kano, the Emir of Zaure, very eminent people like that and they are all waiting for when this round table between the
Now those religious leaders are saying we cannot be giving you our blessing without some conditions, even in the Bible there are condition, when God said you shall be my people, it said provided you shall do this and do that, so it is now we input those proviso, but these religious leaders are now saying, we shall bless them, we shall anoint them, but we shall also put a caveat, that you are going but these are what we expect of you and if you fail you should not expect our blessing next time
How ready are you to protect your vision to ensure that politicians don’t infiltrate your ranks to sing their praise to the leaders of these groups to ensure that when it is time for endorsement they are favoured? We have conveyed a round table of Christian leaders and we will soon convey a round table of Muslim leaders, thereafter there will be joint meetings of these two leadership groups on a table and we name that table altar of spirituality and on this altar of spirituality these people will agree on a template that they are all commonly working on, of the their expectations of the political class and political leadership in terms of goods delivery, dividends of democracy, performance and all these indicators will be spelt out, leaders will be expected to adopt this charter. What do you want to buy over in that and even if by any chance you buy it over and you come and lie that you will perform, you are going to take the position and time does not last, four years is already up now for the people in power, so if you think you have fooled them your performance will reveal who you are, the opinion of the people and the leaders will say who you are, your own constituency will reveal who you are and once you have failed them there will be no decamping anymore, because it will be tough for you to decamp from party ABC to party XYZ because you have failed on ABC platform, you won’t be able to take your loot into another party because the people will say no we want somebody else, so I believe it is a near full proof approach to ensuring emergence for a crop of leadership that can be called truly tried, tested and proven, whose ultimate aim is to deliver to God, to the nation and to the people and naturally by themselves, that is why we talk about legacy, what legacy are you planting and leaving behind, what legacy?

SNA Lagos chapter marks “October Rain” Stories: Chris Onuoha The Society of Nigerian Artists, SNA, Lagos State chapter has consistently lived up to its billings engaging art practitioners, members and the general public to discern the evolving phenomena in art practice. This state chapter, which has stood out as a touch bearer to the SNA national’s visionary art movement charted a course with an annual art stampede called “October Rain.” From its inception, the initiative has assiduously welded the body into a formidable group that has given art and art practice a meaning in the country and beyond, bringing out the vibrancy, recognising the founders and icons of the movement and as well placing Nigerian Contemporary art in the global view. Last week, the chapter unveiled the 2018 edition of the “Rain.” At the briefing attended by the members of the planning committee headed by Michael Fasakin, chairman of the organising board alongside others, reiterated its stand to push the initiative higher. The 2018 October Rain will open from October 20 running till 26 holding the Thought Pyramid Art Center, Norman Williams, Ikoyi, Lagos. The Lagos State chapter Chairman, Idowu Sonaya sounding very optimistic stated that this year’s annual event is unique: in the sense that a greater homage is paid to the first president of the Society of Nigerian Artist, Prof Yusuf Grillo and another big name Abayomi Berbers. Addressing the media, Sonaya stated; “It is great pleasure for me to see that the annually organised October rain exhibition by the Society of Nigerian Artists, Lagos State chapter is again being sustained. Moreover, it happened to be our second major event after my administration took over from Dotun Alabi’s administration in April this year. The first was the ‘SNA Week,’ which was organised in August 22 to 25, in honour of the ace painter, Kolade Oshinowo as a continuation of his 70th birthday anniversary. “For three consecutive years, we have been organising the October Rain in honour of our elites in the visual arts community. In 2016, the Rain was centred around the Late Sammy Olagbaju. In 2017, it rained as a mark of honour on Late Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi. This year’s rain will eventually fall torrentially in honour of two Nigerian Artists Icons, they are Prof. Yusuf Grillo and Prof. Abayomi Barber. Prof. Yusuf Grillo is being honoured for his iconic roles in visual art education and visual art practice in Nigeria. Moreover, it is meant to celebrate his unflinching support to the development of SNA as a professional body over the years at both national and state levels. It is noteworthy to mention that Prof. Grillo was the first and founding President of SNA National in 1963. Prof. Abayomi Barber in his own class is being honoured as he clocks 90 years old, on October 23, 2018. He was born on October 23, 1928. He is

highly regarded for his pioneering role in starting a visual art training school at the University of Lagos in 1973, with Muri Adejimi as his first student. It is a great joy that University of Lagos is today blessed with a vibrant faculty of Creative Arts. “On the other hand, this year’s October Rain has recorded over 100 artists as participants who happened to be icons in their own right, with over 100 artworks. The list ranges from the Legends to the Masters. We have such legends as Kolade Oshinowo, Banjo Fasuyi, Bruce Onabrakpeya, Nike Okundaye, David Dale and Abayomi Barber on display. We also have works from various contemporary masters of our time, they include, Abiodun Olaku, Bunmi Babatunde, Sam Ovaraiti, Olu Ajayi, Kunle Adeyemi, Mufu Onifade, Oladapo Afolayan, Dotun Alabi, Damola Adepoju, Idowu Sonaya, Ajayi Porter, Bolaji Ogunwo, Udenta Omoligho, Stella Mofunanya, Micheal Fashakin, Anthony Nwalupue, George Taylor and many other masters, both young and old. “October Rain exhibition has served as platform for young artists to launch themselves into stardom over the years. It has maintained a reputation of high level of professionalism in creativity and craftsmanship. These qualities are evident in the works that will be on display via thorough scrutiny executed by the exhibition committee jury. I am very sure that those who would walk into this exhibition space at The Thought Pyramid Art centre on October 20, 2018, will be filled with plethora of pleasure,” concludes Sonaya.

He also stated that the driving vision behind this project is to know the focus of fashion and styles particularly in our cities and be able to as a researcher take those findings down and build on the success that were achieved and also look for new ground for other meaningful development in that sector. The workshop will however, boost the newly created Fashion and Design department in the School of Art, Yabatech. Dr. Adeyemi also noted that fashion being a major aspect of human existence, there is need to discuss its relevance and develop the industry to grow. According to him, “Fashion is a major aspect of human life. Christians call it raiment. When Philosophers talked about the needs of man, they mean ‘food, shelter and clothing.’ If it is one of the core need of human existence, then we need to discuss it over and over to show its relevance and development as a money spinner to boost our economy.”

Gernot Rohr: Super Eagles need all 6 points against Libya Having missed out of the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations back-to-back in 2015 and 2017, Super Eagles Franco-German Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, insisted yesterday that Nigeria must pick all six points at stake in the AFCON 2019 qualifying clash with
Libya to stand any chance of topping the group. Eagles are playing Libya’s Mediterranean Knights on the Match-day Three of the AFCON 2019 at the Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo on Saturday and follow up with the reverse fixture in Sfax, Tunisia four days later. But after rounding up the team’s Thursday training in Uyo, Rohr made it clear to Eagles that nothing short of outright victory in both matches will be good enough for Nigeria’s aspiration to return to the summit of football in the continent. “I believe we have the players here to earn a decent result and then go and give their all in Libya for another credible outcome. “We need the points now; we cannot pretend about that. If we pick the points in these two games, we will be very close to the AFCON ticket,” stressed the gaffer who is going to miss
the presence of his inspirational captain, John Mikel Obi. He admitted that it was great that after Nigeria dropped all Match-day One opening round three points to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, Super Eagles went to Seychelles to grab maximum points. “It was good winning in Seychelles the way we did. We got the result we needed and it should serve as a good motivation to continue winning when we play Libya,” Rohr noted. Also speaking on similar note, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick, called on the three-time African champions to give joy to the country’s teeming football lovers by pocketing all the three points on Saturday. “It is important that we win in Uyo on Saturday in order to fly with the same momentum to
Tunisia for the return leg. “Victory in Seychelles last month has restored our campaign and we must capitalise on the good feeling to get close to a ticket. Victory in the two matches will not only take us closer to 2019 AFCON ticket, it will provide us with the verve we need to go and win in South Africa in November.” South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0 in Uyo on the opening day of the qualifying series in June 2017, and it is a result that still rankles with the average Nigerian football fan. Meanwhile, group leaders Libya has now opted to fly into Nigeria today as against the earlier plan of arriving Uyo yesterday. The delegation is scheduled to arrive the Ibom International Airport in Uyo aboard a chartered aircraft this morning. Referee Jean-Jacques Ndala
g22
Ngambo, alongside compatriots Olivier Safari Kabene (Assistant Referee 1), Nabina Blaise Sebutu (Assistant Referee 2) and Malala Kabanga Yannick (Reserve Referee) – all from the Democratic Republc of Congo arrived Lagos yesterday and will be flown into Uyo this morning. The match commissioner, Mr. Andy Quame from Liberia, as well as South African Dan Van Vuuren (security officer) and Malian Koman Coulibaly (referee assessor) will also arrive in Uyo today.
Ahmed Musa: I shunned offers from European teams in favour of move to Al-Nassr Former Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa has hit back at critics of his move to Saudi Arabia outfit Al-Nassr following calls for him to be dropped from the national team of Nigeria, where he is the first vice captain. Musa made a big money to Saudi Arabia based Al-Nasr from English Premier League outfit Leicester City after his exploits for Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia despite Nigeria exiting the tournament at the group stage. He finished as Nigeria’s top scorer at the tournament with two goals
from three games and according to the forward he could have remained in Europe after the World Cup but decided to move to Saudi Arabia. Offers poured in for him from teams in Europe but the 25 year old said he decided to move to Saudi Arabia on his own and defended the move by saying football in Asia is on the rise. Furthermore he insist that it’s all about playing well wherever you play if you want to get called up to the national team, suggesting that one must not play in Europe to get invited to the senior national team of Nigeria.
”My move to Saudi Arabia is not much a big deal for me. I had so many offers from teams in Europe but I decided to go to Saudi Arabia. Football is not only played in Europe, Asian football is doing very good. It’s all about doing very good”, Musa said. “It’s not about playing in Saudi or in China that will make the coach call you. If you are doing well then you will be called. Now that we are here the focus in on getting a good result against Libya and hopefully we will get the results we need from both games”.
Henry Onyekuru determined to Kennedy Boboye quits as Plateau United coach make Nigeria proud Nigeria international Henry Onyekuru is eager to make his country proud as the Super Eagles gear up to face Libya in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on Saturday. Gernot Rohr’s troops play host to the Mediterranean Knights in a Group E showdown at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium this weekend, before the reverse fixture in Algeria on Tuesday. The Super Eagles suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Bafana Bafana last year before a 3-0 thumping of the Seychelles last time out. They now set their sights on a Libyan side rocked by their coach’s departure days before back-to-back matches against the West Africans. “We know what the coach wants from us which is to give our very best against Libya, that is exactly what we intend to do in both games,” Onyekuru is quoted as saying by NFF’s official Twitter page. “We will work very hard to win and make our nation proud.” Onyekuru is currently on-loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray from English Premier League club Everton.
Coach Kennedy Boboye has parted ways with Plateau United, according to a report. The gaffer quit his post after the expiration of his two years contract. According to Boboye: “I have parted ways with Plateau United, my two years contract has elapsed. “It is really a great feelings to work with such big team like Plateau United, a wonderful experience I must say, it’s sure going be a memory that will not fade all through my life time. “I cherish every moment spent as a head coach in Plateau United. “Not forgetting the high point of my career with Plateau United by winning the league title
as a coach. “I want to thank the technical director coach Ahmed Ibrahim for the wonderful support giving to me all through my stay with Plateau United and also the General Manager Mr Pius for his kind gestures. “I can’t forget the players who stood by me. They were my driving force because without them I wouldn’t have achieved these much. “I also say a big thank you to the wonderful fans of the club for their relentless support. “We are like a family, in the rain, in the sun, in every stormy challenges, we stood firm with each other, having our hand together to fight to reach our goals and dreams together.”
George Weah watches on as Liberia lose 3-1 to Congo in Nations Cup tie
Liberia’s President George Weah watched on as his country’s national team lost 3-1 to hosts Congo in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. The former world footballer of the year played in an international friendly for Liberia in September. It was a first win in Group G for the Red Devils and lifts them to four points, leaving Liberia bottom of the pool with 1 point after three matches. The two sides meet again in
Monrovia on Tuesday. DR Congo and Zimbabwe are the other two teams in Group G and they play on Friday in Kinshasa and then on Tuesday in Harare, both nations have four points from their opening two game. Weah watched on as Merveil Ndockyt converted a cross on 15 minutes to give the hosts the lead at half-time in Brazzaville. Norway-based Sam Johnson levelled two minutes after the
break with a powerful shot that was warmly applauded by Weah, whose played for Monaco, Paris SaintGermain and AC Milan. However Congo’s win was sealed with goals from two Princes – Ibara headed home after 62 minutes and Oniangue in the final minute of the game. Liberia defender Kemoh Kamara also attracted attention by wearing gloves despite the temperature being 31-degree Celsius (87 Fahrenheit) temperature.

Thierry Henry in advanced talks with Monaco over head coach role Thierry Henry is expected to agree a deal to become Monaco head coach within the next 48 hours, Sky Sports reports. Talks are at an extremely advanced stage and though a deal is not fully concluded yet, both parties are hoping to settle on terms over the weekend. Monaco sacked Leonardo Jardim on Thursday with the club 18th in Ligue 1 and having won only once this season. Other names on Monaco’s shortlist were former Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte and River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo. Since winning the French title in 2017, Monaco have raised almost half a billion pounds by selling players such as Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain), Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City), Tiemoue Bakayoko (Chelsea), Thomas Lemar (Atletico Madrid), and Fabinho (Liverpool). Henry, currently assistant manager of the Belgium national team, started
his playing career at Monaco in 1994 and he was part of the side that won the French title in 1997 under Jean Tigana.
He ruled himself out of the running to replace Steve Bruce as Aston Villa manager before Dean Smith was appointed earlier this week.
Usain Bolt scores two goals for Central Coast Mariners in trial Usain Bolt has marked his first start for A-League side Central Coast Mariners with two goals against Macarthur South West in a preseason friendly. Bolt, the 100 metres world record holder and eight-time Olympic gold medal winner, joined Central Coast on trial in August in a bid to win a contract. He scored his first in the 57th minute, putting Central Coast 3-0 up with a powerful left-footed finish. And his second goal came in the 68th minute when Bolt capitalised on a defensive error to tap home from

Novak Djokovic wants tennis Super World Cup Novak Djokovic wants to see a tennis “Super World Cup” and strongly suggested that he will join Alexander Zverev in skipping the new Davis Cup finals. A new-format Davis Cup finale is slated for a week in Madrid in November 2019, but it has been controversial with some fans and players. Zverev, the world number five, said at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday that he will not compete in the men’s team event because it comes at the end of a long season. Third-ranked Djokovic agreed on Thursday that the timing was “really bad”. He is backing instead the rival ATP World Team Cup, set to take place weeks later at the start of the 2020 season in Australia. Speaking in Shanghai, the 31-year-old Djokovic said there was
“confusion” with the two competing events coming so close together and being so similar. Asked if he would compete in the Davis Cup, he replied that “I’m not 100 percent sure at the moment”. “I just feel like the date of the Davis Cup is really bad, especially for the top players,” said Djokovic, echoing the strong sentiments of Zverev a day earlier. “Between the two, I will prioritise the World Team Cup because that’s a competition of ATP. “But also I think and I hope that there will be a larger discussion between the players to understand how we are going to approach these two competitions. “Or hopefully we can make it to the point where we can have one big ‘Super World Cup’, if you want to call it (that), or whatever it is, because that’s the best thing for our sport.”
Yokohama to host 2019 IAAF World Relays Japan will now host two of the biggest events on the athletics calendar in successive years after the choice of Yokohama for the 2019 IAAF World Relays. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said in a statement on Friday that its Council voted this week to award the 2019 edition of the World Relays to Yokohama. Already preparing to host the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan will now welcome the athletics world a year earlier. It will host the IAAF World Relays at the Yokohama International Stadium on May 11 to May 12. After The Bahamas Government confirmed that it would no longer be able to offer the financial guarantee necessary for the event in Nassau, the need for a change arose. Several member-federations then contacted the IAAF directly to express their interest in hosting the 2019 World Relays. Following very careful consideration, Japan was considered to be the preferred location. The first three editions of the IAAF World Relays, in 2014, 2015 and 2017,
were held in the Bahamian capital, which proved to be an exceptional host of the new event. Speaking on the development, IAAF President Sebastian Coe thanked The Bahamas for its key role in establishing the World Relays as a successful competition. He then welcomed Yokohama as only the second city to host the event. “I am delighted that Yokohama has stepped in to host our youngest World Athletics Series event and I am confident that they will do an outstanding job in spite of the short preparation period,” Coe said. “Several of our member-federations expressed interest in hosting the popular IAAF World Relays next year and I thank them for their efforts. “This confirms the appeal of what is a very entertaining team-based competition with a unique spirit. “Japanese crowds are renowned for their enthusiastic support and I am sure they will give our athletes a tremendous reception next year. “This will also be a great opportunity for our athletes to experience the culture and conditions of the host nation little more than a year before the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
